  • The Xbox October Update Rolls Out Today

The Xbox October Update Rolls Out Today

    Reading Time: 5 minutes

Team Xbox is excited to continue bringing new ways to make Xbox better, with you at the center, as we refine the experience and deliver brand-new features based on your feedback. This month’s update will bring you the ability to change your TV volume from your Xbox Series X|S consoles, to mute all your startup sounds, improved setup screens to choose and change your home Xbox, an Xbox controller firmware update and more.

You’ll also notice a Search bar has been added to the top of your Xbox console home screen, making it easier to quickly search for games, apps, and media content.

Change your TV volume – New CEC feature for Xbox Series X|S

Xbox Series X|S consoles can use an HDMI feature called Consumer Electronics Control (CEC) to send commands to and from CEC-enabled devices such as TVs that are connected to the console. Starting today, we’re enabling a new feature for Xbox Series X|S consoles connected to TVs over HDMI.

You can now change the TV volume within the audio and music section of the Xbox guide. To get started, press the Xbox button on your controller to pull up the guide and navigate to the Audio & music section, where you’ll see buttons for you to change your TV volume or mute it. This eliminates the need to reach for your TV remote to change the volume mid-game or movie.

    Mute your startup audio

We’re adding a fan-requested feature so that you have the option to choose a silent startup experience. Now you’ll be able to customize your settings so that you can mute all sounds when you start up your Xbox. Go to Profile & system > Settings > General > Volume & audio output > Additional options and select Mute startup sounds. You can also now adjust the power chime from this page.

Select or change your home Xbox

Making a console your home Xbox gives friends and family access to your games and content when you’re not signed in. Your home Xbox also lets you play your digital games offline. We’re adding some new setup screens to make it easier for you to select and change your home console when you set up your new Xbox.

Changes to Xbox power mode names

You can configure your Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One console to use different power modes, depending on your preference. This month, you’ll notice that we’ve updated the information to help you choose the settings that will work best for you and renamed the options. “Standby” is updated to “Sleep” and “Energy saver” is updated to “Shutdown (energy saving)”. To see the power settings for your Xbox, press the Xbox button to open the guide and select Profile & system > Settings > General > Power options.

Xbox passkeys and guest keys are now Xbox PINs

Your Xbox passkey and guest keys are an added layer of security that is tied to your Xbox profile. While we’re updating the names from Xbox passkey and Xbox guest key to Xbox PIN and Xbox guest PIN, nothing else changes except the name. You can use your PIN with any Xbox console that you sign in to and limit access to things like purchases and parental controls.

    Xbox controller firmware update

Keeping your controller updated with the latest software maximizes your controller’s capabilities and compatibility. Starting today, we’re rolling out a firmware update that includes bug fixes for USB flight sticks that connect to the Xbox Adaptive Controller and additional bug fixes for the following Xbox controllers:

    • Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2
    • Xbox Series X|S Wireless Controllers
    • Xbox Adaptive Controllers
    • Xbox One Wireless Controllers with Bluetooth support

You can update your controller wirelessly or with a USB connection.

Xbox app – trim the length of your video clips

Is there an epic gaming moment you want to save and share? Now you’ll be able to trim the length of your Xbox gaming video clips with the Xbox app for Android and iOS. To get started, go to Library > Captures and select any of your clips. You’ll be able to adjust the start and end of the clip and then share it with your friends. Video trimming in the Xbox app will start rolling out today and be available for everyone soon.

Xbox Game Bar – share to Medal.tv and edit your clips

Xbox Game Bar works with most PC games on your Windows 11/10 PC, giving you instant access to widgets for screen capture and sharing—all without leaving your game. You can now directly import any clips you captured with Xbox Game Bar to Medal.tv where you can edit, post and share your favorite gaming moments.

While playing a game, press the Windows logo key + G on your keyboard to open Xbox Game Bar. If you have an Xbox controller plugged into your PC, press the Xbox button. In Captures > See all my captures you can select a clip and then “Share to Medal.tv”.

Limbitless Solutions then works with their recipients — known as “bionic kids” — to train them how to use their new prosthetic, leveraging a variety of methods including instructional video games developed in partnership with UCF’s School of Visual Arts and Design and Games and Interactive Media. This approach to training allows Limbitless’ bionic kids to enjoy learning how to use their new device and helps guarantee that their personal-made bionic limb and sleeve function in a manner tailored specifically to them. Leaning into their guiding principles as a nonprofit organization, Limbitless also ensures their prosthetics are given to their bionic kids at no cost through a combination of fundraising and brand awareness.

Driven by the studio’s own values of innovation and giving back, 343 Industries has been working with Limbitless Solutions since 2018 to provide new Halo-themed designs for their prosthetics. 343 has provided sleeve designs modeled on the armor of in-game heroes like the Master Chief and the Arbiter which are made available to young people who – like the characters the designs are based on – routinely face the odds and emerge triumphant.

As a result of this continued partnership, 343 Industries is happy to announce an expansion of the Halo-inspired line of interchangeable sleeves provided by Limbitless Solution. Two new sleeves are being added to the repertoire: one based off the new armor of the Master Chief displayed in Halo Infinite, and the other based off the armor of Halo: Reach Spartan Catherine-B320, also known as “Kat”. In a desire to keep a strong connection between the sleeve recipient and their chosen character, Limbitless also worked with teams at 343 and Microsoft to develop a new satin matte green color to match the characters’ design more authentically.

“We are thrilled to continue our partnership and to bring these new designs to life”, said Albert Manero co-founder of Limbitless Solutions. Our team cannot wait for children to proudly show these new bionic designs to their friends in their classrooms or on the playground.”

The Kat sleeve in particular represents a special connection between the Halo universe and the Limbitless mission, as Kat was one of the first major characters in-universe to use a prosthetic limb. Kat is also representative of the Halo universe’s ability to provide examples of courage and tenacity across many different life experiences, and to allow fans of Halo a personal connection to the narrative regardless of their own circumstances. 343 Industries’ partnership with Limbitless to create the Kat sleeve is a new step in the service of that aspect of the Halo franchise. In the words of 343 Industries Studio Quality-of-Life PM Ron Brown, “It’s really nice to know that people can have this part of their identity and the things that they love be a very physical, very real part of them.”

Attendees of the Halo World Championship in Seattle (October 20th – 23rd) will learn more about the collaboration between 343 Industries and Limbitless Solutions and see models of the new designs. Staff from Limbitless Solutions will be at the event demonstrating the technology that controls the prosthetics via a training video game that utilizes the prosthetic’s sensors, and the team will share about their organization and mission. Halo content creators will also be streaming onsite to their audiences and encouraging them to support Limbitless Solutions’ mission by donating to the UCF foundation via their Tiltify page.

Pathfinding: Changing lives with Xbox Game Studios Game Camp

    Reading Time: 7 minutes

    Blog-Hero-ChrisDouglas-Sep22-16x9-XL-1568x880-01-v2.jpg

For some, the journey into the games industry takes years of persistence and career building in another field before networking and passion lands them that job in gaming. This month, we’re featuring the stories of Xbox employees that started their careers in Retail and explore how they transitioned into their current roles in Xbox. Last time, we met Albert Dankwa III, a Content Program Manager for Xbox Support. Today, we’re happy to share the journey of Chris Douglas, a Business Program Manager for Xbox Game Studios (XGS) Game Camp.

    Backstory

Chris grew up playing video games with his family, and from a young age was intrigued by how they worked. He remembers playing his first video game and thinking, „I don’t understand what’s happening. When I move these arrows or press this button, the character on screen moves and jumps, but how? What is going on between the controller and the system and the screen to make all these things happen? That started my journey and got me excited about technology and gaming.“

When he began talking to advisors and teachers about his plans after high school, Chris remembers being told „there’s no money in technology and video games, you won’t be able to do that.“ As he got closer to graduation, Chris told his parents that he wanted to be part of the gaming industry, whether that was in development or marketing or some other capacity. He remembers them telling him „I don’t believe that is something for you. We don’t see a lot of people of color, especially black men, with these jobs.“ Chris knows his parents weren’t trying to kill his dreams but rather wanted to protect him from failure. Growing up in a black household, Chris says „you don’t have the ability to fail. You don’t have the same privileges as other people and you only get one shot.“ Now that he has learned more about the importance of having a growth mindset, Chris understands the benefits and opportunities that come from learning from your failures. Still, he acknowledges that the experiences of other black people often match his parents‘ expectations.

After graduating high school, Chris began attending Xavier University of Louisiana in New Orleans, the only historically Black, Catholic university in the United States. Still, many of the computer science professors were white men. Chris continued to meet adversity, but with the recent launch of Xbox from his dream employer Microsoft, he was determined to continue his pursuit of a career in gaming. Shortly after, Chris‘ personal life took a turn when his mom found out she had breast cancer. Chris realized he could not work two jobs, support his family, and attend school.

After a series of warehouse and retail jobs, Chris became a store manager at GameStop, where he was promoted several times. While he enjoyed learning about new gaming features, in particular the Xbox 360, Chris realized that brick and mortar stores were not the future of retail. He left GameStop for AT&T, and after 5 years there had almost given up on his dream of gaming and working for Microsoft. Then Microsoft began opening retail stores.

As soon as they announced the store in New Orleans, Chris applied and became a learning specialist working with schools. As he worked with K-12 schools, he realized that many of the students had never seen a computer, so he started working with community development specialists and other groups in Microsoft to bring Surfaces, Minecraft Education, and coding workshops to local schools.

Chris says „the best moment of my entire life was when I walked into a school, and I was wearing my colorful Microsoft shirt, jeans, and Jordans, and this kid said that he had never seen anyone from Microsoft before – he didn’t think Jordans and working at Microsoft could even go together. That’s when I realized these kids were seeing themselves in me and it was incredibly humbling. I have a big responsibility to the kids in my community to help them get to where they want to be.“

Chris began bringing gaming into the outreach programs, inviting streamers and others to talk about games, marketing, and esports. Word got around the city that if you wanted to do something gaming related, talk to Chris at Microsoft.

Near the beginning of the pandemic, Chris was approached for help with a new project called XGS Game Camp, which focused on finding new ways to reach underserved communities interested in creating games. His managers were very supportive and let him split his time between retail and volunteering with XGS Game Camp, and when Microsoft decided to permanently close the retail stores Chris was offered the job of production assistant at inXile Studios, one of the local XGS Game Camp partners.

Chris spent a year learning about production, which touches everything from audio to animation to engineering, and had a great experience in his first real gaming role. But he felt like something was missing without the chance to regularly give back to his community. When Xbox Game Studios decided to further invest in XGS Game Camp and wanted Chris to join the team full time from his home base in New Orleans, he knew it was a perfect fit.

    Big Dreams: Basketball or Gaming?

Around age 12, Chris started playing basketball, football, and track. As he focused more on athletics, he discovered a real talent for basketball and his family and friends began encouraging him to pursue a career in the NBA. Chris says, „There are 15,000 Men’s Division 1 NCAA athletes in the United States but only 60 people get drafted into the NBA. That’s a .004% chance, but my family believed I had a better chance of making it to the NBA than of working in the gaming industry!“ Not convinced a basketball career was realistic, Chris continued to keep his other goals of being a chef or a game designer in mind as he went into high school. He cut grass and washed cars to pay for games and gaming magazine subscriptions and read everything he could about emerging industry and technology trends. Still, his family and friends urged him to continue playing basketball through high school and college, convinced a career in the NBA was more attainable than a job in gaming.

Chris reflects, „I love basketball more than anything, I really do. It’s one of the most exhilarating things to watch or play. When I used to play basketball, everything else stopped. There is this poetry about it when it’s happening. But there is something even more magical about being able to connect to a character in a game and go through that world and feel connected to the narrative, music, and environment. It’s a surreal experience. If you allow yourself to be open, games will transport you to a different place. You can experience a different reality and for a little bit you can forget about everything that’s happened and be focused on this other moment. For me it’s therapeutic.“

Despite the pressure from his community to give up on gaming, Chris says that „growing up I had to realize that sometimes even the people who love you the most don’t support you because they are trying to protect you, not because they don’t love you. You can’t allow anything to stop your dream.“

What a Business Program Manager does

Chris says that „Xbox Game Studios Game Camp is a program that’s built to prove that extraordinary talent resides everywhere. We try to meet people and talent where they are and help any budding game creators from traditional and non-traditional backgrounds. We want to add diverse voices to gaming – people of color, women, people from underrepresented communities and tough socioeconomic backgrounds. Our goal is to reach everyone interested in making games and demystify the gaming industry and help them with tools and resources. We want to help them realize their dream by building a network of subject matter experts inside Xbox they can learn from.“

As the Business Program Manager for XGS Game Camp, Chris‘ job is to strategize the delivery of tools and resources for campers while building a rapport and getting to know them on a personal level. He maintains relationships with marketing, media, brand management, legal, mentors, engineering, non-profits, and more to stay on the bleeding edge of creation tools, engine advancements, and knowledge sharing to empower campers to deliver their vision.

Chris shares, „I really have an ability to change people’s lives. I get to be the person that I wanted to have in my life, to believe in them and their dreams when others don’t. I am thankful I can be that encouragement to keep people from giving up on their dream.“

    Gaming History

Chris grew up playing games and he remembers the first Nintendo his parents bought clearly. „I was 7 or 8 and we had just come back from a family vacation at Disney World, which was a really big deal. When we got home, I wanted to play with my friends who I hadn’t seen in a week, but my dad told me I needed to come inside and spend more time with the family. I went to my room and lay on my bed, upset, and he came in and put a Nintendo on my bed – and suddenly it was the greatest day again. We hooked it up immediately and started playing together.“

Chris is currently playing Destiny 2, Deathloop, Overwatch 2, Moonscars, Prodeus, and Halo Infinite.

Xbox Game Studios Game Camp is a two-to-four-month program that is hosted in different cities around the world. Learn more at Xbox Game Studios Game Camp.

  • Dyson Sphere Program is Now Available with PC Game Pass!

Dyson Sphere Program is Now Available with PC Game Pass!

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

    Summary

    • Create a Galaxy-wide factory from scratch and bring the incredible Dyson Sphere to life
    • Sandbox Mode, Milky Way, DIY Functions… Follow your hearts desires
    • Look out for the combat system we plan to release in 2023

The entire Dyson Sphere Program team is so happy that Dyson Sphere Program is now available with PC Game Pass! Here’s the right new place to begin with – from cutting trees to mining, you can build a galaxy-wide industrial empire and create your own Dyson Sphere!

    screenshot

Seriously, What is a Dyson Sphere?

The game was inspired by an idea for a gigantic cosmic structure proposed by physicist Freeman Dyson in the 1960s: Imagine harnessing the immense energy of a star using a sphere that envelopes it, creating enough power to power entire civilizations. Even though the idea of Dyson Sphere is considered a hypothetical and impossible to materialize, a five-member indie game company, Youthcat Studio, has reimagined it for the virtual world.

Featuring elements of adventure, exploration, and factory automation, Dyson Sphere Program offers unique gameplay experiences for sci-fi, space, management enthusiasts and all other kinds of players.

    screenshot

OK, So Why Do We  Need a Dyson Sphere Here, in the Game?

If this is your first time to Dyson Sphere Program, let me introduce you what’s going on in the universe: in a distant future, the survival of an advanced human civilization will depend entirely on virtual computing, but the supercomputer responsible for their existence – the “CentreBrain” – is not able to handle the demands placed upon it due to a lack of electricity. You, as a space engineer, must control a light industrial Mecha named Icarus and build a Dyson Sphere to save the CentreBrain and the civilization that depends on it. Starting from humble beginnings, you will cut trees, mine, build small factories, lay down production lines, plan interstellar logistics, build an industrial empire that spans the galaxy, and finally, build your own Dyson sphere.

I’m an Experienced Player, What Can I Expect?

You can try out some new modes from our recent patch if you’re not new to the Dyson Sphere Program. As well as the classic factory automation management mode, we’ve also added a Minimal Resource Mode for an additional challenge and a Sandbox Mode so you can experience the later stages of the game quickly and freely. You can also take a step back and admire the galaxy lit up by global players in Milky Way and find your own twinkling light within the cosmos.

The Dyson Sphere Program‘s DIY systems are a must-see if you like creative works. One of them is the Dyson Sphere design system. You’ll see it when you get very close to the ultimate destination of the game. Unlike its namesake, your Dyson Sphere doesn’t have to just be a round sphere, you can build it in any shape you want:

    customized environment
    spherical face

Another DIY system available now is Mecha Customization. This system allows you to unleash your inner fashionista and customise your Mecha to your heart’s content, the only question is what colors and shapes are you feeling today?

    techno bug

What is to Be Expected in Future Updates?

As of now, Dyson Sphere Program is regularly updated with new features and changes, and we will continue to do so. But Dyson Sphere Program won’t stop there: The combat system is scheduled to launch in 2023, taking the game in a brand new direction compared to its current form. Players will face a hostile force with the ability to rapidly expand across the universe at frightening speeds: the Black Fog. Aside from maintaining the CentreBrain, players must also build defenses and arm the Icarus Mecha against enemy attacks. We are looking forward to the release of this update that our entire team is hard at work on.

    planets

There’s so much more to Dyson Sphere Program that awaits you, and we can’t wait to see you join our team of Dyson Sphere engineers! For more advice or to meet likeminded players, feel free to join our Discord community and start exploring the universe.

  • Gearing Up for Your First Hunting Trip in Wild Hearts

Gearing Up for Your First Hunting Trip in Wild Hearts

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

    Summary

    • Wild Hearts is an action-adventure fantasy hunting game coming to Xbox Series X|S next year.
    • Craft items on the go to aid with hunting your prey, traversing the terrain, and more.
    • Play a single battle, a side quest, or the entire campaign with up to two other players.

When I heard Electronic Arts was teaming up with Koei Tecmo on the next great hunting game, my imagination ran wild with visions of a supernatural hero tracking down fantastical beasts and fighting them in epic battles. Wolves and tigers, maybe? Even a dragon.

Following its announcement last month, and thanks to a recent hands-on preview event, I learned Wild Hearts is aspiring to be a mystical game “where hunters craft ingenious mechanisms to face giant nature-infused beasts in fantasy feudal Japan,” with some innovative and entertaining new features fans of this genre are sure to enjoy.

    Wild Hearts

    Tame a World Gone Wild

Wild Hearts, coming to Xbox Series X|S early next year, is an action-adventure game playable either solo or with up to two other players online (with cross play support) in a roughly 30-hour story campaign. When playing with other players, you can experience a single battle, the entire campaign, or even the side quests. Difficulty is scaled based on your party size and loot is distributed randomly, not based on individual performance. You can also customize your home base, which is on display to other players who join your game. While there is a bit of gathering, farming, and crafting, Wild Hearts is primarily all about the hunting, and as the trailer reveals, “taming a world gone wild”.

Welcome to Fantasy Filled Feudal Japan

Wild Hearts takes place across four large open-world locations set in Azuma, a fantasy world based on feudal Japan. Each of these landscapes are themed with a season, including a region with a giant cherry blossom tree for spring; a remote island in the middle of the ocean for summer; a war-torn fortress for fall and a castle frozen in ice for winter. Each of these areas are accessible from a place called Minato, a centralized mission hub where you can plan your quests and team up with friends and fellow hunters.

The world is incredibly beautiful and transports you to a very believable medieval Japan, right down to the smallest detail. Landscapes filled with traditional Japanese architecture, stone ruins, lanterns, cherry blossom trees, and cranes wading through streams really bring a sense of awe. Couple this with an amazing soundtrack and brilliant voice acting, and you truly feel like you’re in “the land of the rising sun.”

    Wild Hearts

    Choose Your Weapon Wisely

Weapon availability during my time with the Wild Hearts demo was limited, but I’m told the full game is said to have eight unique weapon types, each with several configuration options resulting in hundreds of variations. These will range from katanas, bows, hammers, and even a bladed umbrella, and their effectiveness against your prey varies based on its type and how the weapon has been upgraded. A variety of armor options will also be available and upgradeable.

    Craft Ancient Technology

What makes Wild Hearts different than other fantasy hunting games is a unique feature called Karakuri, a special ability based on ancient technology enabling you to craft items on the go to aid in combat, traversing the terrain, and more. Some of these were available in the demo, including platforms and springboards to help gain a height advantage over your prey (or counter their incoming attacks). I’m told there will be many more tools available to hunters, including gliders, zip lines, catapults, flares that can stun your prey, and bombs that do massive damage. Karakuri can also be used to craft cosmetic and practical items for your home base, including a campsite and blacksmith table.

    Wild Hearts

Beware of the Creatures of Unusual Size

Wild Hearts, at its core, is a hunting game, but before you go and start feeling sorry for the wildlife, most of your encounters are with savage creatures looking for their next meal (you). These beasts are known as Kemono, mystical beings that fuse animals with nature, and are largely inspired by real world animals.

Many of the encounters I had in the demo and showcased in the gameplay trailer were those found in Japanese folklore, like rats, boar, and a very menacing ape-like creature, only they’re infused with nature, and quite large. One Kemono was covered in moss and able to affect the surrounding vegetation by forcing vines to shoot up through the ground, while another was bonded with lava. All the Kemono have this in common though: they are huge, deadly, and aim to finish you.

    Wild Hearts

Wild Hearts is being developed by Omega Force, the Japanese development studio at Koei Tecmo, and creators of the fabled Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors series. Wild Hearts is set to arrive in the Xbox Store for Xbox Series X|S on February 17, 2023. Keep it tuned here to Xbox Wire for more details on this game and many others, and check out the official website or follow them on Twitter for the latest news and announcements about Wild Hearts.

  • Xbox Celebrates the Disability Communities with New Accessibility Updates

Xbox Celebrates the Disability Communities with New Accessibility Updates

    Reading Time: 8 minutes

Xbox aims to empower everyone to play the games you want, with the people you want, anywhere you want. And that includes the over 400M players with disabilities in the world. Today with the 2022 Xbox Accessibility Showcase, we celebrate the Disability community and the many people and organizations working to remove barriers to play, ultimately making gaming more accessible around the globe.

This year, we chose to host the Xbox Accessibility Showcase in the Microsoft Inclusive Tech Lab, which is located on Microsoft’s Redmond, WA campus and intentionally built with accessibility in mind from the ground up. The lab strives to encourage developers and designers to intentionally include people with disabilities in the products and services they create, by showcasing how inclusive technologies allow everyone to participate. The same is true for gaming. When we make our experiences, games, and platforms accessible, more people get to experience the power of connection that comes from play, be it bonding with their family, seeing themselves reflected in a game or the joy that comes from helping others discover the fun of gaming.

In fact, when we asked members of Xbox Accessibility Insiders League (XAIL) and the Xbox Ambassador community what they wanted in the future of accessibility, they emphasized:

    • The importance for more and wide variety of accessibility options year-round, in addition to customization of accessibility options including text, subtitles, captions, difficulty settings
    • How critical it is to include players with disabilities in design, as collaborators and as an audience.
    • The importance of standardized settings, increased discoverability of features and communication of accessible gaming.

As we work toward that future of accessibility, today we are happy to share updates that encourage everyone to create, play and connect through gaming. We look forward to partnering with the community and industry in the upcoming years to bring the power of play to more people.

    Create

In addition to updates on the Accessibility Developer Resource page, we are excited to share the following resources that make it easier to create games with accessibility and connect with community.

Microsoft Gaming Accessibility Testing Service (MGATS) Players with Disability Focus Offering

Since launching the Microsoft Gaming Accessibility Testing Service (MGATS) in February 2021, hundreds of Xbox and PC titles have had the accessibility of their titles validated against the Xbox Accessibility Guidelines (XAGs), with feedback from players with disabilities shared and details on Xbox’s Game Accessibility Feature Tags applied. This month, a new offering called MGATS- Players with Disability Focus (PwD) launches for studios not quite ready for testing across 20+ XAGs. This service focuses on providing game developers with feedback from players with disabilities around core scenarios, menu navigation, and settings in their games.

Xbox Accessibility Guidelines – Touch Control Guidance

The Xbox Accessibility Guidelines (XAGs) are a set of best practices that have been developed in partnership with industry experts and members of the Gaming & Disability Community. Based off community feedback, this month we launched best practices around touch-based interfaces when it comes to gaming on mobile devices. These new guidelines include details surrounding touch target sizing and placement recommendations, swipe sensitivity, and the importance of supporting mobile-native input accessibility features.

    Connect

Gaming has the power to bring people together, and at Xbox we want to bring the joy of play and community to billions of players, including the over 400 Million players with disabilities.

    Xbox Ambassador Accessibility Explorer Path

The Xbox Ambassador program is a group of players that celebrate the uniqueness of everyone, promote a safe gaming environment, and above all else, make gaming fun for everyone. And a large part of that is knowing what options are available for gaming. To support this, we announce the new, free Xbox Ambassador Accessibility Explorer Path, an engaging, new learning path meant to teach Xbox Ambassadors all about accessibility. This includes trying out platform and game accessibility features, learning about industry leaders and players with disabilities, as well as discovering accessibility best practices. New missions will be added throughout each season, allowing Explorers to level- up their knowledge.  Check out more details and join the Xbox Ambassador program today!

A white Xbox Ambassadors logo is shown in front of a green background with blue hues. The words “Xbox Ambassadors” is shown directly beneath the logo.

Find Xbox and PC Accessibility Features Support on Support.Xbox.com

Xbox has a redesigned support hub for players to learn about all the accessibility features on console and Windows devices, so players spend less time figuring out how to use a feature and more time playing. With easier navigation, the accessibility articles are now organized by feature category, so players can find the support they need, discover new features and compare features between PC and console. New and updated articles coming in October include Narrator shortcuts (keyboard and controller), Xbox notifications, and copilot on PC. Check out the updated Support.Xbox.com Accessibility site (English available today, additional languages to be available soon) or the short video sharing the key updates.

A screenshot of the updated Xbox.Support.com Accessibility site is shown, with a header reading, “Accessible gaming on Xbox and Windows” and a subhead asking, “What can we help you with?” Underneath are four boxes, which users can click on. These include “Controllers and Other Inputs,” “Stay Focused on Gaming,” ”Discover Our Visual Features” and “Check out our Audio Features”

    Play

Through gaming we are able to experience new worlds, gain new perspectives and create new memories from play. For that to happen games need to be accessible. In addition to accessibility pages on to the Family Gaming Database, to make it even easier to find accessibility features on games, we share a few games recently launched, coming soon, or featured in the 2022 Xbox Accessibility Showcase.

    Stories of Blossom

A storybook-drawn photo of Stories of Blossom’s title is shown, which depicts a girl with her eyes closed, imagining different stories in her head, including one of her on a pirate ship, one of her running down a hill, one of her floating in the sky, and another of her holding what appears to be a mirror.

Coming to Console and PC in 2023! Join Clara as she brings to life a series of short tales told by her nurturing grandfather. Explore storybook illustrations, befriend cute creatures in odd situations, and help solve their problems along the way. From the very beginning, accessibility was a central part of Stories of Blossom’s development. View the accessibility features in the game here and check out today’s Showcase to learn how the developers worked with Xbox to incorporate accessibility into the game.

    Pentiment

An in-game menu display comparing the “Stylized Fonts” versus “Easy Read Fonts” options in Pentiment.

Coming to Xbox Game Pass & PC Game Pass, Console, PC, and Steam on November 15. Set in 16th century Bavaria, Pentiment will take players on a narrative journey through the eyes of Journeyman Artist Andreas Maler during a time of great social unrest. Led by game director Josh Sawyer, this game is brought to life by a talented team inspired by illuminated manuscripts, woodcut prints, and history itself.

Late medieval manuscripts are calligraphic and can sometimes be difficult to read. Obsidian Entertainment worked with Xbox to ensure there were a variety of customizable font settings in the game, including font scaling, high contrast mode, text-to-speech, and Easy Read font option, which improves legibility by disabling some fonts and writing effects.

    As Dusk Falls

Image of As Dusk Falls’ three main characters Zoe, Jay, and Vince

Available now with Xbox Game Pass, Console, PC, Cloud, and Steam. As Dusk Falls is an original interactive drama from Interior/Night that explores the entangled lives of two families across thirty years. Interior/Night believes as many people as possible should be able to play and enjoy As Dusk Falls. The game’s accessibility features can be found under the Settings menu on the game’s main screen or the game’s pause menu. These include a variety of text to speech settings, on-screen UI, gameplay adaptations, a companion app, and more. For more information, click here.

    Grounded

Image of what a giant spider looks like with Grounded's Arachnophobia mode fully enabled, which appears as circular blobs with two eyes and no legs.

Available now with Xbox Game Pass & PC Game Pass, Console, PC, Cloud, and Steam. In Grounded, players wake up in a suburban backyard after being mysteriously shrunk to the size of an ant. Guided by a robot named BURG.L, players must explore, build, and survive while confronting the dangers and perils that come with suddenly being insect sized. Play single-player or co-op with friends as Max, Pete, Willow, or Hoops, and be sure to watch out for those pesky spiders.

Obsidian Entertainment worked closely with the Xbox Research team to explore what triggers arachnophobia. The findings from Xbox Research helped determine the best form for spiders to take in the game, while also deciding how to vary their appearance depending on the severity of the phobia.

This resulted in the game’s Arachnophobia Mode, where players can use a slider to scale the alternate forms of spiders and limit their audio effects, helping to make the game more accessible for everyone. Read more about Grounded’s accessibility features by clicking here.

    Work Together

Creating an accessible gaming experience doesn’t start or end with a single company. It takes a collective effort across many organizations and people who believe gaming is for everyone. Here are a few organizations Xbox would like to recognize in honor of this year’s Accessibility Showcase:

SpecialEffect: As seen in today’s showcase, SpecialEffect puts fun and inclusion back into the lives of physically disabled people by helping them to play video games. They are transforming the lives of physically disabled people across the world through the innovative use of technology. At the heart of their work is their mission to maximize fun and quality of life by helping people control video games to the best of their abilities. Microsoft Rewards members in the United States and the United Kingdom can earn and donate points to SpecialEffect throughout October.

RNIB: The Royal National Institute of the Blind (RNIB), is the UK’s leading sight loss charity. They offer practical and emotional support to blind and partially sighted people, their families, and careers. Xbox is delighted to be working with the RNIB to support people who are blind and partially sighted within the gaming community. We look forward to exploring a range of opportunities and initiatives, with the aim of welcoming more perspectives to our gaming communities, for the benefit of all.

    Accessible Events

Gaming is one of the most popular forms of global culture, entertainment, and interaction. With over three billion people playing games, it is important to us to host events and content that is accessible, allowing more people to enjoy the moment at the same time as everyone else.

    gamescom 2022

When everyone plays, we all win. This year at gamescom 2022, Team Xbox wanted to make sure as many people as possible could experience the joy of play at the event. Several elements the team focused on to create an accessible experience included live broadcast with English Audio Descriptions, along with ASL, BSL and DGS (German) interpretation for both the broadcast and in-booth experience, Xbox Adaptive Controller availability at all game stations and sensory processing gear for those who request it. Check out Brannon Zahand, Senior Accessibility Program Manager at Xbox, explain the accessibility of the event including additional elements that were considered.

    Tokyo Game Show

Xbox’s Programming & Events Team is on a continuous mission to make its content and videos more accessible, including localized accessibility. This past month that included supporting the Tokyo Game Show 2022, which had Japanese Sign Language (JSL), Japanese Audio Descriptions and English-language Audio Descriptions read by an Australian to be true to the Asia-Pacific countries where the show was exclusively broadcast.

A picture-in-picture screenshot of the Tokyo Game Show, showing an interpreter using Japanese Sign Language (JSL).

Play Halo Infinite, Forza Horizon 5, and More Games From the Cloud on More Devices Starting Today

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

At Xbox, it’s our mission to empower you to play the games you want, with the people you want, on the devices you want. We believe your Xbox games should be available to you across all your devices; from console, PC, mobile phones, and even more to come — just as your music and movie subscriptions move with you across devices. You should be able to begin Forza Horizon 5 on your console, move to your Windows 11 PC rig with a racing wheel and pedals, and finish up on a tablet. These experiences are only possible when your games live in the cloud, not locked to a single device.

Cloud gaming also invites more people to play because anyone can enjoy console games on the devices they already have. Xbox Cloud Gaming (Beta) launched two years ago and has since added support for many different operating systems and device form factors, including Windows PCs. Moving to these computers opened up new possibilities, letting you play console games on PCs never previously capable of running them. Whether it’s playing Halo Infinite on a years-old laptop, or Microsoft Flight Simulator on an entry-level desktop — everyone with a computer is invited to play. Xbox Cloud Gaming is now available in 28 countries across five continents, providing access to more than one billion people.

As we look to expand and make cloud gaming available to more people, we need to bring Xbox Cloud Gaming support to new devices. So now, with the updated Xbox App, Xbox Cloud Gaming is available on Windows PCs running ARM64 like the new Surface devices announced today.

You can now play hundreds of high-quality games from Xbox Game Pass Ultimate across a range of devices from the cloud, including Android phones and tablets, iOS devices, select smart TVs, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, new gaming handhelds like the Logitech G CLOUD, recently-added Google Chromebooks, and now multiple flavors of Windows PCs.

With cloud gaming, it’s as simple as logging into the Xbox App or going to xbox.com/play and you can nearly instantly stream big hits and indie favorites from our game creator partners such as The Gunk, PowerWash Simulator, and Tunic, and games from Xbox Game Studios and Bethesda like Deathloop and Grounded. Additionally, with Xbox Cloud Gaming (Beta) you can also play Fortnite for free without the need for a Game Pass membership.

Catan – Console Edition Coming Early 2023

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

    Summary

    • Learn more about Catan – Console Edition launching in 2023.
    • Get a first look at the trailer showing the board game coming to life.
    • Read about key features, including rewards, local play and online multiplayer

Land ahoy! Catan – Console Edition is coming to Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S in 2023, allowing players of the massively popular strategy board game to acquire resources and build settlements on an island teeming with life. We have lots in store for prospective Catanians, who’ll be able to settle here, both solo and with friends through different game modes and challenges.

Get a first look at the announce trailer and see the island of Catan emerge ready for next year!

    Catan

A board that comes to life

At the center of Catan – Console Edition is the island of Catan itself, which holds much of the visual and interactive elements our team have worked on to bring players a totally new experience. While you’re deciding on the next move, or planning your future strategy, sheep will graze fields, ships float in the harbor, and each tile will see roads and settlements surround them as play develops with each turn. Both established fans of the classic board game and those new to the lore of Catan will become immersed within a setting that really does come to life!

    Catan

    Solo and multiplayer game modes

A dynamic AI will be in place to challenge solo players wanting to build and grow their own settlements across the island, but more exciting is the opportunity to play among friends with a multiplayer mode that ranks players on skill. We want to ensure games are created among similarly experienced players, forming a balanced quartet to go and explore what the island has to offer.

    Catan

    Local play for cunning strategists

We know that playing together in one room is a huge draw for Catan players. Local play will bring planning and trading with fellow Catanians to the forefront, with the ability to see your hand privately on your smartphone while avoiding the prying eyes of others! Being able to track resources securely will further deepen the level of strategy and ensure that friends aren’t able to second guess your next move.

    Catan

    Rewards and cosmetics

As well as being rewarded with pride for successfully out-settling your fellow Catanians, Catan – Console Edition will also feature unlockable in-game cosmetics and rewards that add some customization to the game. We’ll be setting player challenges to earn these rewards and can’t wait to see the different kinds of approaches to strategy that they’ll bring over time. Altering tactics, online play, and the nature of how each tile is allocated mean that no two games of Catan – Console Edition are ever played the same.

    Catan

Catan – Console Edition launches for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S in 2023. Future Catanians can Wishlist the game soon on the Microsoft Store.
