Greetings, brave astronauts! We are super excited to share some early details of our new title, the cinematic adventure game Deliver Us Mars, which will be coming soon to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.

Journey to the Red Planet with Deliver Us Mars on PS4 and PS5

As a studio we’ve truly been on an incredible journey these past few years and we’re pleased that so many of you took our debut game, 2019’s Deliver Us The Moon, into your hearts. We always knew that our next game had to be bigger and bolder than what had come before. The scale of our ambition as a team is constantly growing, spurred on and inspired by some of the most memorable games to come to PlayStation over the last decade – not least Naughty Dog’s masterpiece, The Last of Us Part II.

For the past several years, our team at Keoken has quietly been hand-crafting Deliver Us Mars to combine the grandeur of a save-the-world sci-fi epic with a personal story and heartfelt motivations. We wanted to pick a setting for our game that reflects our lofty goals for the project. In our own reality, humanity faces huge challenges in the face of climate change. As the space agencies (and some wealthy individuals) have well and truly turned their eyes to Mars, so too have we.

In Deliver Us Mars, which is set ten years after the Fortuna mission in Deliver Us The Moon, humanity is closer than ever to extinction. As part of the crew of the Zephyr, your protagonist’s goal is to retrieve three stolen colony ships from the Red Planet, in order to ensure the continued survival of the human race on Earth. Players will explore Mars as they uncover the origins of a mysterious distress signal that led the crew there.

This next level of storytelling demanded that we take the series to new frontiers. For the first time, we have a fully motion-captured cast to enhance the emotional impact of the story, and we’re giving players new and improved gameplay mechanics including a whole traversal system, inspired by PlayStation classics like Tomb Raider and Uncharted. On top of all of that, we’ll be offering truly next-gen visual fidelity with the support of real-time ray traced shadows and reflections on the PS5.

Mars is the next frontier, an unexplored world with limitless storytelling potential. You’ll get to explore the surface of the Red Planet like never before, encountering not only the dusty plains that are synonymous with our view of Mars but also icy craters and canyons, as you unravel the mystery at the heart of the game.

We always wanted to be astronauts. Sadly, we never made it, so instead we created a game with the hope to inspire others to look to the stars – who knows, maybe one of you reading this might make the journey to Mars yourself one day! We hope you enjoy your first glimpse of Deliver Us Mars’ development in this video, and we can’t wait to share more with you over the coming months.

  • How Deliver Us The Moon Uses Astronaut Tech to Make the Game Feel Real

How Deliver Us The Moon Uses Astronaut Tech to Make the Game Feel Real

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

This is a moment we have been waiting all our lives for — I am extremely excited to announce that Deliver Us The Moon launches today on PlayStation 4!

Deliver Us The Moon is a space sci-fi adventure game that draws endless inspiration from sci-fi movie titans such as Interstellar and Gravity. These films have heart. They feature breathtaking scenery, gorgeous cinematography and stupendously immersive atmospheres. But as we took our first steps in developing Deliver Us The Moon, we realized there was one more thing these films had in common: they made you believe it could be real. So we knew that we needed to ground our story in a realistic, plausible setting — if we wanted players to feel like an astronaut, it had to feel real.

But how do you make a science-fiction game feel real?

    Launching your rocket

It’s tempting to overlook the procedures and complications involved with launching a rocket into space — but as we all well know, it takes more than simply pressing a ‘Launch!’ button. Thankfully, NASA has an enormous library of publicly available information, including the order of events that are involved with blasting a vessel into space. So when you get to launch your own rocket in Deliver Us The Moon, we need you to take care of these gaseous oxygen vent arms, sound suppression systems and hydrogen burn-off igniters!

    An elevator to the moon

It may sound impossible, but an enormous elevator tethering a space station to the moon has been the subject of more than a few serious studies. Efficiency is a crucial factor in space travel, so if we’re going to make regular trips to the moon and back again, we need to make sure we save fuel wherever we can. One way of doing so is by eliminating some fuel-heavy moments on our trips — such as landing. A space elevator would allow us to dock our vessels onto a space station and reach the moon without having to burn precious fuel to land on (and depart from) its surface. Perhaps we’ll never create such a colossal elevator, but it’s a fascinating idea, and one that makes for a pretty picture.

    Transmitting energy — wirelessly

The story of Deliver Us The Moon centers around a colony on the moon that had one goal: to provide energy to Earth. A key element to the colony’s success was to be able to get the energy from the moon to Earth as efficiently as possible (there’s a recurring theme here). When we looked into how this would work, we came upon Japanese research about getting power wirelessly from one point to another using microwaves. While this technology — Microwave Power Transmission — isn’t viable yet for long distances, it inspires hope for our future. If this technology improves, steel lattice towers and overhead power lines may well be a thing of the past.

    Helium-3

So how would this lunar colony generate enough energy to keep the lights on back on Earth? The moon is a pretty desolate place, but due to its lack of a magnetic field, it’s been bombarded with Helium-3 by solar wind. If we could extract and process these isotopes, it could well serve as a potent source of energy instead of the fossil fuels we’re currently burning at an alarming rate. As with Microwave Power Transmission, it’s not a viable alternative right now — but it could be in the future. A future in which we, hopefully, have learned to take responsibility and have established a sustainable relationship with our planet. A future that isn’t as ominous as it is in Deliver Us The Moon.

We cannot wait for you to experience all of this, and more, in Deliver Us The Moon. Perhaps you will find even more examples of other realistic technologies in the game?

  • 50 Years in the Making: How the Moon Landing Shaped Sci-Fi Epic Deliver Us The Moon

50 Years in the Making: How the Moon Landing Shaped Sci-Fi Epic Deliver Us The Moon

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Today marks the incredible milestone of fifty years since three brave astronauts dared to leap, boarding Apollo 11 and leaving our atmosphere with the incredible ambition of being the first to walk on the Moon. Words cannot describe the courage that it must have taken and their mission took us all on an incredible journey, one which has shaped the world’s imagination, perhaps especially the games industry — to take players on breathtaking adventures.

Growing up with a grandfather who inspired us to look up to the stars, we were always spacemen. He designed incredible telescopes and would wake us up in the middle of the night to go stargazing. We had the bug from an early age… but video games have taken that imagination to a new level. The sci-fi genre within games goes back almost as far as videogames themselves. Star Wars: Dark Forces on the original PlayStation was an early favorite of ours but our more direct inspiration for have to be the games that truly allow you to be an astronaut — to explore new worlds and set foot on moons, planets and space stations.

The Mass Effect series really set the bar in terms of sci-fi narrative, driving the player excitedly towards their epic conclusion. Dead Space was a big influence, too — the space suits themselves and the use of HUD within the game, along with what can only be described as a masterclass in the loneliness of space. There have been many sci-fi games that have pushed not only the hardware they were built for, but our minds to the limit in an incredible way, exploring the supernatural and forces unknown. For Deliver Us The Moon, we wanted to make a game that let you fly, but also kept your feet on the ground.

Mankind’s brave ventures into Space and reach for other worlds have given us a much greater understanding of our own. The Earth is changing, and in Deliver Us The Moon we tried to imagine what our planet might look like in another half-century – how mankind might come to depend on the stars, and on you.

So, what can you expect in terms of gameplay?

Will I get to launch a rocket? … Check.
Will I get to moon walk? … Check
Ooooh… How about a lunar rover? … CHECK.

You get to be an astronaut.

We wanted to pack the game full of experiences. From anti-gravity puzzles to an open lunar landscape to explore (complete with lunar monorail), there’s plenty to keep you feeling light while you take on your mission.

Deliver Us The Moon will launch on PS4 in the near future but while you wait, we would like to encourage everyone to enjoy the commemorations over the next few days; from the anniversary of the launch today, through to the moon landing on Saturday, July 20, and their landing back on Earth on July 24.

We would like to thank Michael, Neil, and Buzz for daring to leap and taking our imaginations on an incredible journey.
