  • The Samurai Predator arrives in Predator: Hunting Grounds

The Samurai Predator arrives in Predator: Hunting Grounds

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

We are thrilled to bring the second paid DLC pack to the game this month. Supporting this title was a goal of ours from the onset. We knew that we wanted to bring additional characters, weapons, modes, maps, and more to the game after launch. In order to service both the game and the fans we need to bring both free and paid DLC in a regular cadence. Luckily, Predator: Hunting Grounds is a rich universe we’re all excited to play with. Since we brought Dutch in as a Fireteam member last month, we’d like to introduce a new Predator class this month.

The Samurai Predator has arrived. This class of Predator comes from an ancient Japanese legend that brings to life the tale of this demon from the sky. During the hottest of days when the sun bit the necks of farmers of this island nation, a rushing sound unlike any other echoed across the sky. The Samurai warriors would recognize this omen and don their weaponry to fight the invisible demon. Year after year, the most elite of warriors would fall honorably to this Yautja in a ritual that would last for centuries. We are excited to see players bring this Yautja into battle in the hunting grounds. We included early access to the Predator Katana with this DLC pack as well. The Predator Katana will be unlockable to all players later in July.

As a reminder in case you missed earlier this month, the free update landed in-game on June 12. This update made Dutch’s Hammerhead QR5 and knife unlockable to all players. We also dropped a ton of new customizations in it as well.* You can find the complete customization list on the IllFonic forums here; it also contains the Patch Notes for 1.10 from that day. And we heard in the community that many players had reached level 100, so we increased the level cap to 150. As a reward, players will receive the Elder Predator class once hitting this new level. I have seen a few Elders in the wild already. I cannot wait to see some Samurai in the hunt this week too!

*Gameplay required to unlock weapons, skins, and classes; cosmetics acquired by randomized drops.

  • Jetzt in Predator: Hunting Grounds – der Samurai-Predator!

Jetzt in Predator: Hunting Grounds – der Samurai-Predator!

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

  • June free update now live in Predator: Hunting Grounds

June free update now live in Predator: Hunting Grounds

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

I am excited to share information about today’s free update, and the paid DLC coming later this month. We knew when we started developing Predator: Hunting Grounds that we wanted to make sure we continued to get new content into the community’s hands post launch in April. This is the second drop of many to come!

We are still excited, and pinching ourselves that it wasn’t a dream, that we were able to get Dutch’s story into everyone’s hands last month. This month’s free update for everyone will give you the ability to earn Dutch’s QR5, “Hammerhead,” rifle and his knife. In addition, there are many tints, skins, and shaders that once found and unlocked in the field lockers will be added to the customization experience. The customizations are the Obsidian Shader for Predator Weapons, Obsidian Tint for Predator Masks, Crimson Tint for Predator Armors, Sage Tint for Predator Armors, Ivy Tint for Default Predator Skin Patterns, Hydra Tint for Raptor Predator Skin Patterns, Blue Viper Shader for Fireteam Weapons, Digital Tint for Fireteam Outfits, Full Suite of Hammerhead Weapon Shaders, and Special Shader’s for Dutch’s Knife.

In addition, we are increasing the level cap to 150. We have heard from quite a few of you that you have hit 100 and we want to make sure there is more for you to do. Also, congrats on hitting 100! To reward players for climbing to these higher levels, we have added chase items that will unlock at milestones throughout the journey to level 150. Platinum Predator armor and mask tints are rewarded for reaching level 100, followed by Fireteam Knives and the Hammerhead assault rifle. Once players reach level 150, they will gain access to the Elder Predator class as well as Golden Predator armor and mask tints. We have also added a special set of Elite Fireteam weapon shaders that unlock once you reach weapon level 10 for each gun.

Coming later this month is the second paid DLC. We gave you a new Fireteam member last month so it only seemed right that we launch a new Predator. This month we are excited to introduce you to the Samurai Predator. The Samurai Predator comes to the hunting grounds from feudal Japan, this demon from legend once hunted skilled warriors who protected the island nation. You can find more information and purchase the Samurai Predator on June 30 at the PlayStation and Epic stores. We are excited to see the Samurai lurking in the jungle very soon!

Das kostenlose Juni-Update für Predator: Hunting Grounds ist da

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

    Predator: Hunting GroundsPredator: Hunting Grounds
    Predator: Hunting GroundsPredator: Hunting Grounds

    Predator: Hunting GroundsPredator: Hunting Grounds

    Predator: Hunting GroundsPredator: Hunting Grounds

  • Dutch Arrives In Predator: Hunting Grounds

Dutch Arrives In Predator: Hunting Grounds

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

We don’t know about you, but that was the longest two weeks from announcing to playing new game content for us. We are so excited the day is here and you get to experience Dutch’s story now with us with the free update. When we were looking to add Dutch into the game it wasn’t lost on us that 38 years would have passed from the ‘87 film to this game’s timeline, and that means a lot of life lived and stories to tell. It was really great to throw a bunch of ideas around and work with the team at 20th Century Studios Games to make sure everything made sense in the Predator universe. A lot has happened since then, literally and figuratively; comic books, more movies, new characters in the universe, etc. It was important to all involved that we could weave Dutch’s story throughout.

We decided the best method for delivering this story would be in recordings that Dutch would have made over time, similar to Jake Busey for the Sean Keyes character. The difference is that these recordings will unlock as you rank up and you will have access to them when you hit those various levels, versus finding them in game and needing to earn the right to keep them and listen to them later. You will get to hear Arnold, as Dutch, tell you where he has been and what he has been up to over the years!

    Predator: Hunting GroundsPredator: Hunting Grounds

And if hearing Dutch isn’t enough for you, then you can choose to buy the first of several planned DLC drops, and play as him too. We were able to make Dutch a playable character for the game, which makes this DLC so exciting for me, and the whole team. I am beyond thrilled everyone was able to make this happen! Players will get special gameplay lines delivered from Dutch when you play as his Fireteam character. These only come with the DLC purchase.

We did many iterations on his character skin to get it just right and make certain everyone loved the final product. It visually captures that Dutch has been out there fighting the good fight, collecting information on Predators around the globe. His character looks as though he has been hardened from battle; he is someone you want backing you in a fight.

Predator: Hunting GroundsPredator: Hunting GroundsPredator: Hunting GroundsPredator: Hunting Grounds

Purchasing the Dutch DLC will also get you early access to his QR5 and his knife, these are new weapons that are coming to the game. These weapons won’t be available to other gamers until later in June. These unique weapons have been used by  Dutch over the years while on the hunt for Predators. The QR5, Hammerhead, is a new weapon to the universe. It is a fully automatic assault rifle equipped with an underbarrel grenade launcher. The knife is a custom blade, taken from the gauntlet of a slain Predator and repurposed as a human weapon. Use this arsenal and play as the one and only Dutch on his mission to hunt down and kill the species who wiped out his team. I can’t wait to see Dutch face off against the Predator once again. See you in the jungle!

  • Dutch Returns To The Jungle in Predator: Hunting Grounds

Dutch Returns To The Jungle in Predator: Hunting Grounds

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

I think it is safe to say many of us have been experiencing launch day jitters, watching stats, making patches, and really just wanting to jump into the game with the community all the time. But we have never been happier than we are right now! Thank you to everyone who jumped into the hunt with us on launch day. Today is probably one of the most exciting days for me personally. It is my birthday for one, and secondly, I get to talk about one of the biggest career highs of my life right here in this blog. I get to share with you what our first free update and first paid DLC are.

    Predator: Hunting GroundsPredator: Hunting Grounds

We are bringing Dutch to Predator: Hunting Grounds. Yes, Arnold Schwarzenegger has reprised one of my favorite roles from childhood for this game. The game that IllFonic has developed out of a love for the ’87 Predator. To say my inner child cannot be contained is putting it mildly. Yes, I got to meet him, and yes, I think I kept my cool. We got to spend a day in sunny California recording with Arnold. And before you ask, Arnold truly is one of the nicest people I have met in my lifetime.

In order to make Predator: Hunting Grounds the game we envisioned it to be, it had to include Dutch’s story and bringing him back into the universe. We have created two different items for the community in order to do this. The first is a free update, available for all players who own the game. Players will be able to learn where Dutch has been all these years and hear his story in his own words through a series of voice tapes that you earn as you level up.

    Predator: Hunting GroundsPredator: Hunting Grounds

The second is a Paid DLC pack where you can play as Dutch and get early access to the QR5 “Hammerhead” Rifle and Dutch’s Knife! (available free for all players later in June) Getting the future Dutch just right was so exciting for the entire team. Creating the details, working with our partners to make certain everything fit together perfectly in the universe, and of course working with the legend himself has been a dream come true. We cannot wait until you can get access to both the free update and the paid DLC on May 26!

    Predator: Hunting GroundsPredator: Hunting Grounds

Rest assured, the content doesn’t stop with Dutch. We have some really fun stuff in store for the community. We have both free updates and paid DLC coming in the months ahead that will keep you on your toes in the hunt and continue to make the game exciting for everyone. With the free updates we plan to introduce new weapons, game modes, and more.  We will share more as we get closer to each content drop. For the various paid DLC you will get access to more themed character packs. Dutch is just the beginning! Be sure to follow our socials and join the community forum at predator.illfonic.com. We will update in these channels as more information is ready to be shared. Now I need to get  back into the game and practice my hunting skills because Dutch will be here on May 26!

  • Predator: Hunting Grounds — The Hunt Begins This Friday

Predator: Hunting Grounds — The Hunt Begins This Friday

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

First off, I really want to thank everyone who downloaded and played with us over Trial Weekend! A lot of our dev team, myself included, were jumping into matches and loved getting to see how everyone tackled the missions and hunted. It was also a great learning experience for us as developers. We play every day with each other, a fact that is beneficial to the development process, but also means we get very used to how we all play. So, getting to see how new Fireteam members and Predators come into the game and how they play was extremely helpful to our last few weeks of development. For that we are so thankful!

One of the major takeaways from the trial was that the game is super fun to play and watch other people play, which was rewarding to see. Some other takeaways helped us regroup on that following Monday and put into motion our plan of action for patching pre-launch. With only four weeks to go we knew there was a bit of work to do still, but we were ready. Thankfully, we were able to address a lot of the issues folks were seeing.

We also addressed many things in respect to balance, that was a key area of feedback we received, on both the Predator and Fireteam sides. You can visit the forums to see the full list of changes made. Here is a snapshot of some of the changes we made that will impact balance. For the Fireteam we made infil locations based on the mission. Quick gear swapping controls are now shown on the screen and many weapon adjustments have been made, in regard to damage done, etc. We made the diffuse button for the Predator Self Destruct sequence easier to interact with. However, there is an increased difficulty with the Self Destruct puzzle. Also for the Predator target isolation will no longer start at 100% at the match start. We also enabled the ability to switch weapons while transitioning in Predkour and made changes to various elements of the weapons, like damage. One of the pieces of feedback we heard a lot was about the Predator’s footstep sounds, we updated the walking/running footstep attenuation to make the Predator stealthier.

And lastly, some of the additional issues the community gave us feedback on were also addressed like matchmaking times and notifications, crossplay is now enabled by default, voice mic mute is no longer enabled by default, and many more. Performance issues are still something we continue to look at and dial in. This will be ongoing, especially as we put out planned updates down the road, post launch. Which we do have a plan for! If you would like to see our full list of patch notes make sure to visit the forum here.

    Post-launch Support

Speaking of planned updates, we view the launch of Predator: Hunting Grounds as just the beginning. What that means to us, at IllFonic, is that we can continue to drop new content post launch. We do have a roadmap in place for this already. In fact, you will see the first content update — which will be a free one — go live a little over a month from now. And there will be more content updates after that. These will include many great surprises. This is part of why our community forums are so special to us. We are listening and taking your feedback to heart, whether it be found bugs or comments on the game.

It has been a busy four weeks and we can’t think of a better way to celebrate than getting into the hunt with you this Friday. After the Trial Weekend we were all having withdrawals playing testing things without the community.  We make games we love, and it means so much when the community loves them too! We will see you in the hunt on Friday the 24th! Oh, don’t forget to pre-order the game to get the ’87 Predator if you haven’t already.

  • Predator: Hunting Grounds — Trial Weekend Tips

Predator: Hunting Grounds — Trial Weekend Tips

    Reading Time: 6 minutes

I hope everyone is getting excited for the trial weekend* starting March 27! As you are getting ready to join the hunt, the team here at IllFonic wanted to share some tips and tricks that will help you in the jungle. Playing alone as the Predator or as part of a 4-person Fireteam will have very unique playing styles and advantages. Here are some of the most helpful tips the community have enjoyed when playing the game at hands-on events. Of course, you will find your own ways of surviving the hunt!

    Focus

First of all, be focused on your goals to win the match. If you are the Predator, your mission is clear- take out the Fireteam and collect your trophies. Nothing else matters. If you are the Fireteam, you will have specific objectives against AI that you will need to accomplish, get that done and escape with your lives to win the match. You definitely have the option to hunt the Predator which will earn you more XP, but consider risk vs. reward especially when you are playing to win.

    Fireteam

Stay Close Together, but Not Too Close

Staying nearby to help each other out is imperative. If the Predator does manage to attack someone, everyone can be right there to fight the Predator off or hunt him down. One guy goes down, two push the Predator back while the last player revives their buddy, then regroup. Being apart allows the Predator to set up potential traps with downed teammates that will never end well. And of course, being too close will be an easy target for plasma splash damage.

    Mud Up Consistently

Remember the original movie when Dutch covered himself with mud to hide himself from the Predator? You can do that in our game! There is no shortage of muddy areas in the jungle, so mud up consistently to hide your heat signature from the Predator. The Predator can easily miss a mudded up Fireteam member when it uses its thermal vision similar to the films. This avoids the Predator auto scanning you when in close vicinity, is a great way to break up your silhouette and stay out of the Predator’s view when in foliage, and it also makes it harder for AI to detect you.

Spot and Pay Attention to Spots

If you can’t communicate via chat, you can use the spotting system to let your teammates know what you see. Whether it’s a health pack hidden, AI enemies, or the Predator jumping through the trees. When everyone can see the threat, it is much easier to act quickly on.

    Roles and Classes

To be effective as a 4-person Fireteam, everyone should know their role and play to their class’ strengths. During the trial, you can choose to play three of the four classes that will come with the full game: Assault, Support, or Scout. A Scout excels at speed and agility, allowing them to run ahead to discover helpful items and complete objectives. Being a versatile class, Assault can cover the Scout, help complete missions, fight AI enemies, and prepare for when shit hits the fan. Lastly, Support can carry more helpful gear to resupply their team, help soak up damage in large battles with AI, and draw the Predator’s attention. A properly structured team will force the Predator to be extremely careful.

    Keep Moving

Keep things moving. The more you can adjust your position, the more work the Predator has to do to find you. If the mission advances, try not to stay around and wait for nothing.

    Predator

    Tracking Down Your Prey

The Predator’s most powerful tool for tracking is their vision mode. Using this mode will allow the Predator to see sound disturbances (Gunfire/Explosions) across large distances to zero in on chaos that could potentially be caused by the Fireteam. The Predator can also use Target Isolation, a cooldown-based ability which sends out a pulse of energy that highlights the general area of the Fireteam members in the map.

Once closer, Fireteam targets will be scanned and marked to help distinguish them from NPC targets. Beware though, do not fully rely on these systems as they can be countered by Fireteam covering themselves in mud or suppressing their weapons.

    Pick Your Battles

Not every opportunity is going to work out. If you feel things are getting chaotic, don’t be afraid to retreat so you can heal and recharge your weapons. This allows the Fireteam shift focus back to their mission and NPC enemies, allowing you a chance to re-strategize and hunt again. A full Fireteam is very well-equipped and will take down a Predator very quickly when working together, so beware of direct fights out in the open.

    Keep the Fireteam Guessing

Use the jungle and trees to your advantage. Mix up your approach styles and angles so the Fireteam never knows where you are coming from next. If they manage to spot you in the trees on one side of the camp, get to the ground, circle the camp, and attack from a completely different angle.

    Take Your Time

Play the long game. As the Predator you have the advantage of only a singular objective, and that is killing your prey. While the Fireteam is progressing through objectives and waves of enemies, you can be planning attacks and waiting for the right moment to strike. Charging in early can lead to a well-equipped Fireteam destroying even the best of Predators, so wait until their resources have been stretched for a much better chance of success. Sometimes poking enemies from a distance a few times throughout the match is enough to exhaust their healing supplies. Also, the point value of your prey increases the further they get into the mission, another incentive to wait before your strike.

As you develop your own playstyle, I hope these tips will aid you as you hunt or are hunted. Everyone at IllFonic looks forward to seeing you in the game March 27-29 for the trial! Don’t forget the full game releases globally on April 24 on PS4 and PC.

  • Predator: Hunting Grounds — Trial Weekend Overview

Predator: Hunting Grounds — Trial Weekend Overview

    Reading Time: 6 minutes

I hope you are sharpening your hunting skills for the upcoming Predator: Hunting Grounds Trial Weekend starting March 27. Here at IllFonic, we wanted to give you a preview of what you can expect this weekend where you will get to immerse yourself into the Predator universe as either the Predator or a member of an elite 4-person Fireteam. Each with their own set of weapons, abilities and tactics to survive. Whether you’re playing on your PS4 or PC during the trial this weekend, you will be spending time in one of our multiple maps, called Overgrowth.

    Concept Art

    The Map

Nestled deep in the South American mountains lies Overgrowth. As you enter the map you will feel the claustrophobic environment of the dense jungle. It will make you feel a bit lost as you try to make your way on the jungle ground or up in the trees, depending which character you are playing as.

This hot, remote jungle location harbors a significant presence of hostile guerrilla forces and operatives from the rogue Project Stargazer, a former government program now attempting to gain financially from discovering alien tech. Both Fireteam and Predator players will have to contend against these dangerous enemies while facing each other.

The occupation of this hidden valley has uncovered a wealth of hidden ancient ruins surrounding a winding river. Something about this location seems to allow temperatures to climb higher than just about anywhere else in these mountains… a perfect place for the Predator to hunt.

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5LODiy9ZvWk&w=560&h=315]

    Team up against the Predator

If you choose to play as a member of the Fireteam, know this isn’t your average group of soldiers. This group is elite and extremely deadly. While taking on the Predator one on one is very difficult, as a group you can work together to turn the tables on the hunter, or to complete the mission and escape. Each time you enter the jungle, one of a number of missions is randomly selected to present a constantly shifting gameplay experience. Each mission consists of multiple smaller objectives that must be completed in order to get to the chopper.

In one mission, you and your team are asked to cut off fuel to the local guerrillas, who are buying massive fuel shipments from an elusive black market contact. You’re being sent in to find the fuel stores and destroy them, disrupting operations in the area for the foreseeable future. Once the fuel has been dealt with, you will need to find the black market operative and take them off the board. In addition to this mission, and hunting the Predator if you choose, you could be asked to accomplish multiple other random missions like sabotage an expensive solar array in enemy camps, destroy dangerous weapon stores, set fire to narcotics, clean up contaminated water sources, and many more.

There are four Fireteam classes in Predator: Hunting Grounds, and during this trial weekend we will be showcasing three: Assault, Scout and Support. The Assault class is a well-rounded specialist with an affinity for leading the mission. If staying light on your feet is important, choose Scout, a quick, agile soldier that can cover the combat areas at great speed. Lastly, you can choose to play as Support, this is the Fireteam member they call in to really soak up the damage with their extra health and damage resistance. In addition to choosing your Fireteam class, you can choose from a wide range of weapons providing different tactical options. During the trial weekend, you can choose from a selection from each weapon type category, eg. shotgun, assault rifle, sniper, etc.

As you level up weapons in-game you will be able to unlock upgrades like scopes, magazines, and suppressors to improve their efficiency. While you are playing over the trial weekend, keep in mind that as a member of the Fireteam there are perks, med kits, ammo bags, and other tools available to you. These tools will prove useful while in the midst of battles with the enemy AI forces, and the Predator who is somewhere hunting you!

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FfF9DW0roF8&w=560&h=315]

    Hunt as the Predator

Now, if you decide you want to jump into the jungle as the Predator, there is a lot happening for you in-game as well. You are the hunter, but do not forget you can be hunted too. Your mission in our game is to hunt for the best trophies. And by trophies, I mean the skulls of your prey. You want to take out the best of the best.

In Predator: Hunting Grounds there are three classes of Predator: Hunter, Berserker, and Scout. Every class of Predator has its strengths and weaknesses. During the trial weekend you will be able to navigate across treetops as the Hunter class. This Predator class is well-balanced and an adaptive warrior capable of taking on a number of situations with ease. Players will be able to choose between the Female and Male Hunter and even select different armor to customize their own look.

As the deadliest hunter in the universe, you have access to a plethora of off-world tech and weaponry. The classic arsenal will be the foundation of each Predator loadout. The Plasma Caster for ranged combat, the wrist blades for close encounters, infrared vision mode to track down your prey, and advanced cloaking for staying stealthy. Other weapons, perks, and gear will be available for unlock as players level up, such as the Smart Disc, Combistick, and more.

And, not to worry, if the Fireteam bands together and gives you a run for your money, you have one last chance to end their efforts, by using your self-destruct.

Now that you know what to expect this weekend, we hope you make some time to hunt with us! The trial will be available to download this Friday in Japan at 3pm JST, in Europe at 4pm GMT, and in North America at 5pm PST.

We’ll be sharing some tips and tricks here soon so be on the lookout!

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

I am so excited to announce we will be running a trial weekend for Predator: Hunting Grounds, starting on March 27, and running through March 29. The Trial will be open to PS4 players with a PlayStation Plus membership and PC players as well via Cross-play support. Just hop to PlayStation Store, download the Trial, and start hunting!

The Trial will be available to download on March 27 in Japan at 3pm JST, in Europe at 4pm GMT, and in North America at 5pm PST.

We spent the last part of 2019 taking a demo around to various gaming events around the world and allowing members of the public to try it for themselves. Seeing the fun that everyone has had as both the Predator and the Fireteam has been incredibly rewarding for the dev team. We received valuable feedback through that process and we believe everyone will be excited to see where the game is. We are looking forward to having you test the game out as we are getting closer and closer to launch.

The Trial will allow you to play solo as the Predator, or to team up online with three others as part of a Fireteam. Back in December, we detailed how savage and powerful the Predator was. Ahead of the Trial, here’s what you should know about playing on a Fireteam in Predator: Hunting Grounds.

    The Odds Are Against You

Who doesn’t love a challenge? We love that when you play as the Fireteam it really captures that feeling of power, of being the best of the best. You have access to a state-of-the art arsenal and gear that lets you feel like you can take down an army, and you will. Fireteam players have a mission to accomplish and must face lots of AI opponents PLUS another player hunting them as the Predator.

Get a Real Sense of Fear

The original Predator movie was scary and so is playing this game. You land in the map with a mission at hand and battle AI opponents to accomplish key objectives, and then all of the sudden you hear that ominous clicking noise, A threat that could be coming from anywhere. On top of this suspense, when the Predator attacks, it’s terrifying. The Predator is relentless. It can pounce on you from above, shoot deadly plasma from the shadows, or rip you apart up close. The thrill of being hunted made the original movie so fun to watch, and what makes playing on the Fireteam so fun.

    Making It Out Alive

Just like in the films, you need to regroup with your team, reevaluate your situation, and decide how you are going to get out alive. The game gives you all the tools you need but the tactics and strategy is all on you.

    • Do you escape the Predator or turn the tables and hunt it down?
    • Do you band together and use your collective firepower to fend it off?
    • Do you divide and conquer?
    • Do you use the environment and AI opponents to your advantage?

There are so many options and the choice is yours. Figuring out how to survive is at the core of why being on the Fireteam is fun.

Lastly, we’re thrilled to reveal our cover art for the game! This piece really captures how we feel playing both the Predator and on the Fireteam. You feel the intensity that the Predator is everywhere and nowhere all at once while hunting the Fireteam. And you also feel that the Fireteam is just as deadly with their arsenal as they work together as a team. They are always alert and ready for anything. Which takes us right back to the film that continues to inspire us, the ’87 Predator.

Every gamer, no matter the character you are playing, is ready to hunt and be hunted. We are looking forward to seeing you in the hunt on March 27! Watch the blog for more info and tips!

  • New Footage Of Predator: Hunting Grounds Unveiled at Gamescom 2019

New Footage Of Predator: Hunting Grounds Unveiled at Gamescom 2019

    Reading Time: 7 minutes

Our CEO Charles Brungardt was just on stage with Geoff Keighley with our first gameplay trailer. In case you missed it, I’m here to give you a recap of what we are showing off at gamescom and a little look at the process of making this game.

Predator: Hunting Grounds is an asymmetrical online multiplayer shooter*. We found this was the best way to deliver on our main vision for the project: to recreate the raw dread of being hunted by something faster and more powerful than you, and the thrill of being the one doing the hunting. That’s right: Predator: Hunting Grounds will be 1v4, and yes, you’ll be able to play as the Predator! Everyone else in the match will be part of an elite 4-person Fire Team, the best and baddest soldiers to face such a threat.

This is the first gameplay we are showing from the game, and we couldn’t be more thrilled. We’re early in development—this was all captured from a pre-alpha build, but it still gives you an idea of our vision for this project. You get to see how we want our missions to start, where the Fire Team is being brought in on the helicopter to the jungle. Did anyone recognize the song? That is a nod to ‘87 for sure! Anyway, you drop down into the map and the Fire Team heads out to accomplish the mission goals they’ve been given, taking out AI and so on. We want playing as the Fire Team to feel like it’s almost its own game: there are AI combatants to face, objects to collect or destroy, and most importantly, getting the heck out of there when the job is done.

It’s that duality that makes things particularly interesting when the game takes a turn and the Predator enters into play. You never know what will happen… Will the Predator hunt down the Fire Team and take his trophies, or will the Fire Team accomplish their mission and hunt down the Predator? It keeps the gameplay intense and fast paced, something we tried to convey in the trailer.

The jungle scene in the demo is lush and full of danger. With the amount of foliage to blend in with, threats can come from anywhere. In particular, unlike many games, you HAVE to remember to look up. The jungle is a playground for the Predator, with all the tree trunks to climb and branches to leap across. We really wanted to capture that element of surprise and anticipation of what is behind that bush, or tree, or stone as you approach it. The Fire Team should feel like badasses against the human enemies yet feel afraid of the true danger in the map: the Predator.

We used Predator ‘87 for a majority of our inspiration for the game. Which we hope the gamers can see from the jungle environment, but also in the lengths we went to behind the scenes. We researched the original weapons and actually recorded them being fired in heavily wooded areas to make sure the sound and reverberation of bounding around trees and leaves was as accurate as possible in-game. We of course take ‘87 and evolve with current day weapons and technology; we want the Fire Team to be able to be at the top of their game against the universe’s deadliest hunter. In addition, we actually tracked down the synthesizers used in the original score. These are just a few examples of the level of detail the team is aiming for as we create Predator: Hunting Grounds. It’s been a childhood dream to work on a Predator game. The little kid in me that would play Predator in the woods with friends is beyond stoked!

When we looked at this IP, it was really important to us that we stayed true to the canon already created in the Predator universe, but to also move it forward. It has been really great having everyone at Fox on hand to answer questions and riff and run things by. Especially since we have been given the unique opportunity that everything we make in this game becomes a part of the official Predator lore.

We have taken our inspiration from the 87 Predator over the other films because we believe it’s the true crown jewel of the IP. We hope that fans of the films will see this game as a bit of a love letter to the film. That being said our game takes place a few decades in the future, so we needed to incorporate all the films into the story. Gamers will see this in little reveals. For example, we have tied Stargazer from the most recent film, then added some interesting backstory between the two factions. We cannot wait for the community to get into the game and see how we have brought it all together!

Predators hunt in hot locations full of strife and combat. They also use paths that are less accessible: trees, rooflines and other tall positions to gain the upper hand. So our maps are designed to have two mapping paths within them. The ground that the humans (Fire Team and enemies) operate on and the “Predkour” map that the Predator primarily uses. The Predator can of course use both paths of travel, but with the Predkour it’s just so much more fun to be running through the trees stalking your prey.

The Predator can quickly run and jump from tree to tree or jump down to and up from the ground while moving around the map. The Predator is a monster that should come out of nowhere always keeping the Fire Team on their toes. It gives the game that tension / horror the Predator IP is known for.

We created a system for the Predator that we call “Predkour” in the studios; think parkour meets Predator. The Predator has the ability to attack from above as well as on the ground, just like in the films. This meant we needed to create a system for the Predator to climb into the trees and move limb from limb, or structure. The Predkour system has really been the most challenging element to the game. We wanted the Predator’s movement from tree-to-tree to feel effortless and make you feel inhuman with your ability to bound around the map.

This also lends to why the Predator is in third person, versus the Fire Team’s first person. The third person view for Predator really allows the player to see not only the Predator, but also the paths available for the Predator to take; as well as hunt at the same time.

The Predator being the namesake of the game should feel powerful and inhuman yet balanced against the Fire Team. The Fire Team is in first person, we feel the camera changes give the game the feel of two games. It’s been harder to make, but the experience is well worth the effort. First person gives the player better frontal awareness, but because of the tunnel vision of an FPS it can also be more terrifying when you know a Predator is hunting you.

    ESRB: Rating Pending

As the Fire Team being hunted, they won’t be powerless by any means. The Predator is powerful, but not invincible. “It bleeds so you can kill it.” It’s all about combat awareness; the Predator is not fully invisible and you can see it as it moves around the world, even when cloaked it’ll give away its location from its own clicks and movement in the trees and the ground.

When the original idea (before even talking to our partners) came up, we wanted to make a game that could stand alone if you have a bad/no show enemy. We love co-op shooters, so the idea of making a fun team-based shooter that has a player-controlled enemy that eventually shows up to the party really got us excited. When presenting to our partners they all understood what we wanted to do and quickly got on board. This kind of game style hasn’t been done to death, but adding enemy AI changes the whole game type to be even more interesting and fresh each time. We think we’ve pulled off mission structure and pacing that, even if you took the Predator out of it, would be a fun and exciting co-op MP shooter to play with your friends.

    ESRB: Rating Pending

The Predator is known for a ton of different weapons but the most well-known weaponry the Predator uses is its wrist blades and plasma caster. These make the Predator extremely dangerous. These are the weapons we see in the demo. The combination of the two makes the Predator an extremely formidable foe.

Balance in Hunting Grounds is key and is ever-changing. A good Fire Team that stays together and communicates, tags, and tracks their enemies can be more effective than a team that runs around without any teamwork. A Predator that stalks their prey and waits for the opportunity to attack can be more dangerous against a single combatant, rather than jumping in the middle of a Fire Team to try to take them all on at once. It’s a true game of cat and mouse and sometimes the cat might become the mouse.

As we continue development we cannot wait to show everyone more of the game and are extremely proud of what we have been creating. As we get closer to launch and show more we believe fans of the Predator films and gamers alike will be as excited as we are.

Predator: Hunting Grounds Revealed During State of Play

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

“There’s something out there waiting for us, and it ain’t no man. We’re all gonna die.”

When I first saw this scene at 10 years old, it sent a shiver down my spine. This gets to the heart of what makes the Predator universe so freakin’ awesome. It doesn’t matter if you are a seasoned special operations badass — if the Predator is hunting you, you are afraid. I’ve been a huge fan ever since.

    Predator: Hunting GroundsPredator: Hunting Grounds

Years later, my fellow IllFonic members and I, fresh off of our last game, are brainstorming what we want to make next. We first assembled 12 years ago to create games based off of movies we love and Predator seemed like the perfect fit. One afternoon during E3, Jared (Gerritzen), Jordan (Mathewson) and I shared our idea that got the entire team amped up. You can tell we’re a team of passionate movie and video game fans.

Once we decided on Predator, it was clear this needed to be a shooter that had to look and feel authentic. Our team’s passion for Predator helped us launch the partnership with Sony Interactive Entertainment and Fox. Not only do these powerhouses believe in our vision, which has made this a dream project, they understand what we want to create. They have given us so much to work with and are empowering us to create something new for fans, while expanding the lore of the Predator. Having that quality bar raised by our partners has been a great driver for creating an amazing game.

So how does Predator: Hunting Grounds play? We’re still pretty early in development – the game is due out next year – but I can give you some initial details about this competitive online multiplayer experience*.

For starters, we’re big fans of asymmetrical multiplayer experiences, and we’re building off our past successes in a whole new way with Predator: Hunting Grounds.

    Predator: Hunting GroundsPredator: Hunting Grounds

One group of players will control members of an elite Fireteam who pack state-of-the-art conventional firepower, from shotguns and SMGs to sniper rifles and more.

Meanwhile, one player will control the Predator: a stealthy, acrobatic killing machine bristling with exotic alien technology such as the infamous Plasmacaster.

As the Fireteam attempt to carry out paramilitary missions – annihilating bad guys and recovering important items – the Predator will be closing in, using its advanced vision mode to track and ambush its prey.

Creating an immersive world for the Predator universe has been so rewarding for our team. We’re massive fans of this IP, and it’s made us closely examine every aspect of the game to be certain we are staying true to the world. Fox has been an incredible part of this process.

    Predator: Hunting GroundsPredator: Hunting Grounds

Our motto at IllFonic is “Gameplay over everything” and we believe that will be evident the moment players enter the hunting grounds. There will be surprises in store for everyone when the game launches next year.

This is just the beginning, so stick around. We’ll have more Predator: Hunting Grounds updates coming in the near future.
