Colin Kaepernick Talks Wild Card Football – Launching Today

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

Hey everyone–Colin Kaepernick here, and I’m excited to share with you a bit about my involvement in the creation of Saber’s new Wild Card Football game. What I love most about this game is that it brings together the best of arcade-style gameplay and strategic football, making it a lot of fun  for seasoned fans like me, but also for people who’ve been introduced to the sport more recently. From the moment I got involved with the project I knew this was something special, and I think you’ll feel the same way!

    Why Wild Card Football?

The answer’s simple: I love the game of football, and I love being part of any effort to get more people interested in it. Wild Card Football brings a fresh twist to the sport we all know and love. From the style to  the game’s unique blend of strategy and its arcade feel–Wild Card is awesome.  It’s not just about replicating the traditional football experience; it’s about taking the game to new heights and making it accessible and fun for everyone.

    My Role in the Game

My journey with Wild Card Football has been an incredible experience. I’ve had the honor of consulting on gameplay mechanics and providing general game feedback to ensure that it captures the essence of football while adding that signature Playgrounds Sports flair. It’s been a collaborative effort to create a game that is not only exciting but also authentic to the spirit of football.

    Favorite Plays and Power-Ups

One of the things I love most about the game is that players are able  to pull off some ridiculous jaw-dropping plays that you won’t see on any regular football field. We’ve taken the concept of power-ups to a whole new level here, allowing you to call down UFOs, become a human rocket, grow to a colossal stature or even freeze the defense. There are hundreds of wild cards in the deck you can use to change the game’s momentum in a heartbeat. You’ll need to think strategically about when to deploy your power-ups since they cost energy. Do you use your game-changing ability early or do you save it for a critical moment? The choice is yours.

    A Blend of Styles

Wild Card Football is a celebration of both the arcade-style football games we grew up loving and the innovation that Playgrounds Sports brings to the table. The game captures the essence of the sport while adding a playful twist that sets it apart from the rest. Whether you’re a fan of traditional football uniforms or you prefer the outlandish outfits inspired by different eras, there’s something for everyone.

Liverpool and England player, Trent Alexander-Arnold dons HTC VIVE in training

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Working with Red Bull and world-renowned ophthalmologist, Dr. Daniel Laby, England and Liverpool FC footballer Trent Alexander-Arnold has been using the HTC Vive Pro Eye as part of a cutting-edge project to enhance his vision. In tests designed by Dr. Laby, the defender has seen vast improvements – notably in visual concentration, target tracking and processing which will allow him to trust his vision even more on the pitch.

The bespoke six-week training programme devised by Dr. Laby which included VR aided AVTS vision tests and multiple object tracking and visual concentration tests has been documented in a full-length feature entitled ‘Trent’s Vision’ which can now be watched on RedBullTV.

Trent has his eyes fully opened to the power of vision and the huge impact it can have on on-field performance. The next-level immersion and precision tracking of Vive Pro Eye has been used to help Trent pick out strategic passes in a simulated play setting. The programme also makes the most of Vive accessories, with the England full back also wearing the Vive wireless adaptor during his face-to face with Dr. Laby in the testing area. The wireless adaptor makes it possible for Trent to move freely, allowing him to make realistic and natural movements for passes as if he was physically playing with his team mates at Anfield.

Testing began earlier this year, with Dr. Laby using Vive Pro Eye to help assess areas such as depth perception, basic visual function, hand-eye co-ordination, reaction time and target tracking. The tailored programme, which included anything from work with a neurotrainer to even juggling was designed to give the defender a fresh perspective on how he uses his eyes on the pitch.

The improvements in Trent’s eyesight have been tangible – noticeably he now has sharper vision (up by 44%), has increased his visual concentration and multiple-object tracking ability (up by 241%), and has quicker reaction and processing time (36% increase). It was also found that as a direct result of the training, Trent’s vision is now as good as humanly possible – 20:10 vision.

Reflecting on the opportunity, Trent commented: “I’m always looking for new ways to train and improve my game, so when Red Bull came to me with this opportunity I said yes immediately. Marginal gains are huge in any sport, especially football, and when you’re competing against the world’s best players, even a one percent improvement can make a huge difference.”

Built for business and professional users, the Vive Pro Eye offers native eye tracking, high resolution, increased comfort, and the precision of external tracking. Companies and industries of all sizes are already using Vive technology successfully. By incorporating the Vive Pro Eye into daily life, users can experience a new level of VR training, deeper product research and deliver more intuitive and engaging immersive experiences. Beat the goalie

Score as many goals as you can in 30 seconds with our code-it-yourself Beat the Goalie game for Scratch. You can access Scratch in any web browser, or offline with your Raspberry Pi.

Start by coding a moving football in Scratch, and work through the project to build a game that tallies your successful attempts on goal within a time limit that you choose. Up the stakes by upgrading your game to include second-player control of the penguin goalie.

    Table football

Once you’ve moved on from penalty practice, it’s time to recruit the whole team!

    Ball tracking with Marty

Marty is a 3D-printable educational robot powered by a Raspberry Pi. With the capacity to add the Raspberry Pi camera module, Marty is a great tool for practising object tracking – in this case, ball tracking – for some football fun with robots!

Teaching Marty the Robot to Play Football

In this video we start to program Marty The Robot to play football, using a camera and Raspberry Pi on board to detect the ball and the goal. With the camera, Marty can spot a ball, and detect a pattern next to the goal.

You can also check out Circuit Digest’s ball-tracking robot using a Raspberry Pi, and this ball tracking tutorial by amey_s on Instructables.
