    Days Gone

Sommer-Angebote 2020: Die besten digitalen Reiseziele

Willkommen in Oregon!

    Preis: 69,99 Euro -> 20,29 Euro

    Death Stranding

Sommer-Angebote 2020: Die besten digitalen Reiseziele

Also: Pssst!

    Preis: 79,99 Euro -> 39,99 Euro

Holt euch Death Stranding im PlayStation Store.

    Need for Speed Heat

Sommer-Angebote 2020: Die besten digitalen Reiseziele

Sommer, Sonne, Palm City: Need for Speed Heat trägt seinen Namen nicht ohne Grund.

    Preis: 69,99 Euro -> 30,09 Euro

Holt euch Need for Speed Heat im PlayStation Store.

    The Last of Us Remastered

Sommer-Angebote 2020: Die besten digitalen Reiseziele

Fans von Städtereisen kommen bei The Last of Us Remastered voll auf ihre Kosten. The Last of Us Remastered spielt – so wie der grandiose Nachfolger The Last of Us Part II – in einer postapokalyptischen Welt: Die meisten Menschen wurden durch den Cordyceps-Pilz in aggressive Mutanten verwandelt, die übrigen kämpfen verzweifelt ums Überleben und Menschbleiben.

    Preis: 19,99 Euro -> 9,99 Euro

Holt euch The Last of Us Remastered im PlayStation Store.

    Red Dead Redemption 2

Sommer-Angebote 2020: Die besten digitalen Reiseziele

    Preis: 69,99 Euro -> 29,39 Euro

Holt euch Red Dead Redemption 2 im PlayStation Store.

    Gran Turismo Sport

Sommer-Angebote 2020: Die besten digitalen Reiseziele

    Preis: 19,99 Euro -> 12,99 Euro

Holt euch Gran Turismo Sport im PlayStation Store.

Grand Theft Auto V Premium Online Edition

Sommer-Angebote 2020: Die besten digitalen Reiseziele

    Preis: 34,99 Euro -> 13,99 Euro

  • Days Gone Gets New Game Plus Mode September 13

Days Gone Gets New Game Plus Mode September 13

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

I’m excited to announce that Days Gone will be releasing its New Game Plus mode. This has been the most requested fan feature since we launched back in April, and it will be available on September 13 through a downloadable update.

Players can now re-experience the epic journey through Days Gone, this time with the advantage of previously earned weapons, bike upgrades, NERO boosters, skills, recipes, encampment trust and credits, collectibles, and trophy progress unlocked from the beginning.

New Game Plus can be started from any save game where the “I’m Never Giving Up” storyline has been completed. You can play NG+ on any difficulty level; Easy, Normal, Hard, Survival, or try it in one of our two new difficulty modes: Hard II and Survival II, regardless of the previous difficulty mode. These new difficulty modes are not specific to NG+ and can be experienced by brand-new players as well.

Perks from patches earned in challenges continue to carry over to the main game, but now they can be used in NG+ and all difficulty modes. So if you haven’t started any of the Challenge modes yet, I highly recommend going for gold in each challenge in order to maximize your gameplay perks before NG+ releases.

In addition, we have a few new trophies available to earn in NG+, Hard II and Survival II modes. Including one related to a mysterious new weapon from an agent that only operates in the shadows.

This is the perfect opportunity to return to the Pacific Northwest and replay your favorite horde encounters, take on ambush camps, and clear infestation zones with your expanded arsenal. But remember, this is Days Gone where the world comes for you — constantly.

New Game Plus isn’t the only news we have about Days Gone today; Mondo has created a vinyl of the Days Gone soundtrack. Featuring 25 unique tracks from the game — including 20 by composer Nathan Whitehead — the soundtrack is pressed on 180 gram colored vinyl discs. The soundtrack will be available for pre-order beginning September 11 on their website.

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

New this week to Days Gone is the latest “bike” challenge, Dead Don’t Ride. Take your seat behind the wheel of an electric golf cart to pick up and deliver passengers at locations around the Salome Hotsprings. There are 36 passengers waiting for rides if you manage to make on time deliveries. You’re working against the clock in Dead Don’t Ride, so in order to get the best passenger ratings and maximize your high score, here are some tips for excelling at the challenge sub-objectives:

    1. Close Call: Park Close to X Survivors. When stopping to pick up your next fare, stop as close as possible to the waiting survivor. Stopping close not only contributes toward this sub-objective, but it also gives bonus points toward the overall challenge.
    2. 5 Star Driver: Drop Off X Happy Survivors. Once you have a survivor on board, pay attention to their satisfaction meter. You’ll get score and time bonuses for Happy and Neutral drop-offs. You’ll still get some points from Unhappy passengers, but no time bonus.
    3. Wild Speed: Drop off X Hard Survivors. Delivery difficulty is indicated by the color of the pick-up ring; yellow for easy, orange for medium, and red for hard. Difficulty is determined by distance to the drop-off destination, and in some cases by jumps or difficult navigation. In addition to advancing this sub-objective, longer deliveries award more points toward the overall score. Since the golf cart has infinite boost, make heavy use of it on long straightaways to achieve this sub-objective.
    4. Street Sweeper: Run Over X Swarmers. Don’t worry about alarming your passengers—running over freaks won’t hurt your delivery rating. Each Swarmer killed will add two seconds to the challenge clock. Try and line up your Swarmer kills along your delivery routes because going out of your way for these kills will work against the clock.

Additional advice for Dead Don’t Ride: Successfully completing all 36 deliveries will reward 2,000 points for each second left on the clock. So be mindful of finding ways to shave precious time from your run; find the best paths to take, discover the optimal order in which to pick up passengers, drift into stops so you’re facing the drop-off location, and use boost as much as possible (without crashing into obstacles, of course).

This challenge awards the “Hit and Run” patch for Bronze or better rankings. This patch reduces the rate at which bikes (and golf carts) slow when impacting enemies. So earning this patch will allow you to keep extra time on the clock, which helps achieve even greater scores within the challenge.

  • Days Gone: New Challenge Live Today, Tips to Top the Leaderboard

Days Gone: New Challenge Live Today, Tips to Top the Leaderboard

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Another week has passed, so it’s time for the next gameplay challenge, Keep Them Safer. Your goal: Clear the 300 Horde as fast as possible. Of course, no challenge is ever that simple — if you want to unlock all the rewards and reign atop the global leaderboards you’ll have to do well at the following sub-objectives:

    1. Bolted: Get X Kills with Crossbow. You start this challenge with 15 bolts, but you can search the environment for Cedar Sapling to craft additional bolts. The crossbow is an extremely effective weapon, but its slow firing rate/reload times mean you’ll always need extra space between you and the oncoming horde.
    2. Untouchable: Get X Kills without Taking Damage. This will force players to create a larger cushion between them and the horde, so don’t stand your ground and press your luck. Since the horde spreads out, you need to pay attention to your flanks—as soon as you see the mini-map’s center circle turn red, you should start moving. And definitely always make sure there’s extra room before throwing Molotov Cocktails.
    3. In Scope: Get X Headshots. Combat Focus is available in this challenge, so use it to secure gold in this sub-objective. Make sure you capitalize on the five Focus Cocktails available as part of your starting load out. You’ll also rack up a good deal of headshots whenever you have the high ground and can fire down into the rushing horde from a steep angle, or when you can corral the horde into narrow chokepoints.
    4. Needless Risk: Get X Kills without Dodge Rolling. This sub-objective forces players to break their reliance on the Dodge Roll, which is a critical tactic for escaping danger in the world of Days Gone. This should leave you additional stamina that helps create distance, which should help you make simultaneous progress in the Untouchable sub-objective.

It is possible to achieve gold rank for all sub-objectives in a single run — if you’re really good. Since each sub-objective has multiple reward tiers that are increasingly difficult to achieve, incorporate some of the following rings to improve your score:

    • Bullets: Rolling will reload your equipped weapon with a portion of its ammo.
      • A great perk when you just don’t have time to reload, but using this means you’re giving up on achieving Needless Risk.
    • Ram: Vaulting regenerates a portion of your stamina.
    • Lionheart: Kills while a Focus Cocktail is active restores Focus.
    • 1%er: Headshots decrease reticle size and increase accuracy when stationary.
      • Combine this with Lionheart to really extend your Combat Focus windows to get as many headshots as possible.

Earning a ranked score in this challenge awards the Endure patch which reduces stamina cost. Not only will this help you in the main game, but this perk is beneficial for the current challenge, as well as previous releases like Surrounded, and Ambush Camp Rush. And finally, the Condemned patch from Ambush Camp Rush improves gun penetration, so we suggest earning that drive up your top score for Keep Them Safer.

  • Days Gone: Tips to Survive This Week’s Combat Challenge

Days Gone: Tips to Survive This Week’s Combat Challenge

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Hello, fans! It’s been a thrill to watch all your posts and videos sharing winning strategies for our first three challenges. I’d like to share some of our own tips for this week’s new Combat Challenge, Ambush Camp Rush. This should seem familiar to Days Gone players, but the addition of a ticking clock and sub-objectives gives this challenge a degree of intensity and tension not seen in previous camps. The main goal is to take out the enemy camp as fast as possible. But in order to get the best score you’ll have to earn a high combo chain while completing the following sub-objectives:

    1. Kill X Marauders before alerting the camp: You can go in quiet for stealthy kills on most enemies, but armored heavies need to be taken down hard and fast. Molotovs or explosives are perfect for heavies; just make sure you’re not around to get spotted once things get loud.
    2. Get X kills from Berserked enemies: You’ll start the challenge equipped with three Residue Bolts, with plenty of crafting materials to be found throughout the camp and on dead bodies. A sniper to the right of your starting position is the most strategic enemy to hit first. He’ll use his high position and powerful rifle to kill your enemies and create confusion for you to move through the camp.
    3. Kill X enemies with traps/distractions: Loot dead bodies and scavenge the environment to find ingredients to craft these tools of destruction. Since collecting items increases your combo chain, focusing on this sub-objective early can drastically increase your overall score for the challenge.
    4. Defeat the camp within X time: At first glance, this sub-objective seems at odds with the others. However, running and gunning by itself isn’t a viable strategy. You’ll have to move so fast you’ll just wind up stumbling into trip-wires and bear traps that slow you down and alert nearby enemies. It’s best to mix-and-match strategies from other sub-objectives to succeed; Soften up the camp with a few stealth kills, create confusion with a few strategic residue bolts, eliminate clusters of enemies with single explosions on your race to beat the target time.

Each sub-objective has multiple reward tiers that are increasingly difficult to achieve, so choose the appropriate gear. The following rings are well suited for Ambush Camp Rush:

    • Bullets: Rolling will reload your equipped weapon with a portion of its ammo.
    • Fleur de Lis: Reduces crossbow bolt falloff, with an added bolt penetration bonus.
    • Vampire: Successful stealth kills suppress your next few shots.
    • Reaper: When you’re near death and your health bar is flashing, your next few melee attacks are insta-kills.
    • Joker: Sliding picks up items within a certain distance from you.

Each challenge allows players to earn more credits and reputation that can be used to upgrade ring strength at the Challenge Shop. And finally, getting a ranked score in Ambush Camp Rush awards the “Condemned” patch whose perk is increased bullet penetration, which will allow you to score much better at Surrounded, possibly even take the top of the leaderboards.

  • Free Days Gone DLC Drops Today, Beginning with Survival Mode Difficulty

Free Days Gone DLC Drops Today, Beginning with Survival Mode Difficulty

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Days Gone has been out for just over a month now, and everyone at Bend Studio is thrilled by the fan response. We’ve been watching the community share beautiful and artistic shots from photo mode, and been incredibly entertained by all the emergent sandbox moments in the video streams. Coming in June there will be new game modes to share even more unique experiences, now with a ShareFactory Days Gone theme.

    Survival Difficulty Mode

Survival difficulty mode kicks things off today. This builds on top of the current hard mode, with many tuning changes that create a much more challenging experience surviving the Central Oregon wilderness. Not only are the enemies harder, but you can’t bypass them using Fast Travel. This mode also features an immersive HUD that increases tension by removing enemy awareness indicators and outlines. The HUD is turned off, but players can temporarily display it by activating Survival Vision. In addition to bragging rights, players will earn new bike skins and trophies that can only be acquired by playing and beating Survival difficulty.

    Weekly Challenges

Later in June, we will begin releasing Challenges. Each week a new combat, bike, or horde challenge drops with unique rules and scoring modifiers. Doing well at challenges awards wearable patches that come with perks. Patches provide small gameplay improvements like increased health, faster stamina recharging, decreased focus cost, greater melee weapon durability, better gun accuracy from the bike, and more. Patch benefits stack and even carry back into the main game. Players also earn rank and credits to buy character skins, bike skins, and wearable rings that provide more potent gameplay perks to help players perform better at all challenges.

Players can only equip two rings at a time, so they have to make tactical decisions for each challenge. Rolling reloads a portion of your ammo, vaulting regenerates some stamina, headshots increase gun accuracy, and more. Rings do not carry over to the main game. Replaying a challenge with new perks opens up increased scoring possibilities and opportunities to earn new rewards to build a better score to compete against your friends and the world via leaderboards.

As you may have caught above, character skins are available in the Challenges. Players will finally be able to change Deacon’s outfit by choosing between three looks: apocalypse Deacon, flashback Deacon, and — for the ultimate in fan service — shirtless Deacon. This is in addition to ten other characters including Boozer, Rikki, Addy, Iron Mike, and more!

Our first gameplay challenge, “Surrounded,” drops in late June. Players must survive an infinite horde onslaught in the town of Sherman’s Camp. They’ll be scored on how long they survive against not only the Freakers, but a clock that is constantly ticking down — killing Freakers adds more time so players can’t run and hide — they have to stay engaged in the fight to get the best score. They can also earn point multipliers by executing specific sub-challenges like environmental kills, headshots, and collecting ears while on the run.

Twelve challenges over 12 weeks makes this the summer of Days Gone and the summer of fun.

  • Creating the Soundtrack for Days Gone

Creating the Soundtrack for Days Gone

    Reading Time: 8 minutes
Spoiler Warning: This post discusses major story beats from Days Gone. If you’re still working your way through the game and don’t want to read about events from throughout its story, now’s your chance to turn back!

In composing the music for Days Gone, I drew inspiration from the High Desert of the Pacific Northwest, the gorgeous setting chosen by Bend Studio. There is such a natural beauty with lush forests, mountains, and waterfalls. But also, the volcanic soil in the region creates areas of sparse vegetation and more rugged landscapes, littered with remnants of human structures left to decay in the rain, snow, and heat.

The setting and art direction that Bend Studio was working towards had an earthy quality reminiscent of frontier times. Rather than create a score inspired by Deacon as a member of an MC (motorcycle club), with heavy guitar or classic rock, I wanted to connect the player to the setting so that they are engulfed in the world playing as Deacon. So I composed a score that has a folk Americana feel to it, which drove the more earthy quality to the soundtrack.

A few selections from the soundtrack really showcase the direction we were going for in developing the sound of Days Gone:

    Track 01: Days Gone

This was the first piece I wrote for the game, and my goal was to set the overall tone for Deacon’s journey. When I thought about it that way, it felt completely overwhelming! Instead, I tried to simply internalize what I knew about Deacon and the story and let that drive the music. I strove to blend a sense of hope with introspection and a touch of melancholy. The dark, grisly ending is our introduction to this dangerous new world and establishes the dual nature of Deacon’s path — staying alive and also finding a reason to keep going.

    Track 02: The Freakshow

The Freakers needed darkness and aggression but their music still had to feel connected to the overall score. It was also important to maintain a thread of humanity as they are infected humans. I used mostly organic, acoustic instruments like piano, guitar and bowed metals but processed them heavily with pitch shifting and distortion. I thought the big, driving sections conveyed the terror of the Horde and the Freaker melody reprised on piano felt connected to the tragedy of most of earth’s population being infected.

Track 03: We’ve All Done Things

I wrote this piece primarily as Iron Mike’s theme and it needed to reflect the “salt of the earth” qualities we see in him. Iron Mike is strong and he’s been through a lot. He’s also a powerful voice of reason for Deacon and suggests that killing isn’t always the answer. I used harmonium and bass harmonica to provide a raw, hymn-like foundation and added acoustic guitars and solo violin that grow as a string orchestra starts building. My hope was for the music to have some of the rugged determination and measured optimism of Iron Mike.

    Track 04: Rest in Peace

The collapse of society means different things to different people. The Rest in Peace cult, a.k.a. Rippers, are non-infected humans who essentially worship Freakers as deities. Rippers are extremely dangerous and I wanted this music to be menacing and jagged but still fit into the overall sound world. I used frame drums and bendy, chunky, acoustic guitar riffs as the core elements. I thought this combination evoked a feral, tribal vibe that felt right for the Ripper sound.

    Track 05: Finding NERO

The music for NERO is unique relative to the rest of the score. While I did continue using guitars, strings, and other pieces of our organic palette, there also needed to be a high-tech, futuristic quality to NERO’s sound and it needed a touch of mystery. I took a more synth-based approach for the foundation of NERO and added building strings and a simple, enigmatic melody to lend a sense of scale and mystery.

    Track 07: The Rager Bear

The idea of Freaker-infected bears was instantly cool and terrifying to me. The sound of the Rager Bears starts with the Freaker palette and then everything gets amplified. I distorted some low, angry cymbal scrapes to create this billowing roar and I used more pounding metal percussion to convey the lumbering mass of these creatures. The strings grow more frenetic and jagged. I wanted this music to feel heavy, raw, and relentless.

    Track 08: A Good Soldier

This piece is about the Colonel and his militia. The Colonel is a strict leader and is intent on creating order in the chaotic world. His mission seems noble but we see hints of darkness in him as the story progresses. This music needed weight and a militaristic persistence. I used the steady, marching percussion and low strings melody to reflect the Colonel’s authority and drive. How far will he go to achieve his goals?

    Track 10: I Remember

This piece is about Deacon’s life before the outbreak and subsequent breakdown of society. I strove for this music to be wistful and a little hopeful and to reflect Deacon’s resolve. His path is complicated and he grapples with regret. John Garvin, Creative Director at Sony Bend Studio, wove amazing nuance into the Days Gone story. It made tracks like this challenging but really rewarding to write.

    Track 13: Promises and Regrets

I wrote this piece for a huge moment in the game where Deacon and Sarah are reunited. This reunion does not play out how we might expect and I love the complexity John wrote into this scene. I wanted the beginning to almost feel like slow motion. Does Deacon really see Sarah standing in front of him? We soon realize that the Sarah he encounters here feels different from the Sarah we first met. She is intensely focused on winning the “war” against the Freaker infection and does not want to leave with Deacon. This is shocking, confusing, and painful for Deacon. They have finally found each other but it’s impossible to pick up where they left off. I built the first half of this piece around Sarah’s theme, keeping the arrangement small with acoustic guitar and light strings. At first, it seems that this might be a joyful reunion, but then the music turns to a cold, distant presentation of our Days Gone theme as Deacon realizes this is not going how he had hoped.

    Track 17: Sarah’s Theme

This is really the love theme for Deacon and Sarah. I wanted this music to remind us of the early days in their relationship, before the infection, and to also remind us of their connection years later as they struggle together. I used a simple piano motif and some sparkly acoustic guitar to evoke a dream-like quality. This builds up to the introduction of Sarah’s melody on an acoustic guitar. Her tune and the Days Gone theme are very closely related.

I wanted these two pieces to feel very connected mirroring what we see in Deacon and Sarah. I also strove for this piece to brightly contrast with most of the rest of the score. Their relationship is a bright light that motivates Deacon to keep going. The theme grows to a big, triumphant statement of Sarah’s melody on strings along with driving percussion, guitars, and the simple piano motif. I think it’s probably the happiest piece of music in the game and my hope is that it helps players feel this powerful connection between Deacon and Sarah.

    Track 19: Never Give Up

This is another pivotal scene where Deacon learns that Sarah’s work is not searching for a way to kill the Freakers, but to cure them. Deacon is moved by this and insists that Sarah keeps pushing forward with her work. I wanted this music to be a rallying cry but to also feel intimate. I used the opening chords of the Days Gone theme along with a delicate solo cello melody as Deacon is registering the importance of Sarah’s work and urging her to keep going. This is a special moment where we see Deacon fully appreciating Sarah’s passion to find this cure and we see Sarah feeling understood and supported by Deacon.

I wanted the players to feel this closeness between them and I shifted the score to soft acoustic guitar strums and strings playing another passage of the Days Gone theme. This delicate moment settles and the strings swell to a driving staccato section as Deacon and Sarah, now energized, hatch their plan to ride north, risking their lives to be free and together. As Deacon leaves, Sarah, once again, thanks him and he responds with “Yes ma’am,” only this time it’s an inside joke between people in love. It’s a wonderful, small, sweet moment at the end and I brought back a soft guitar and piano just suggesting the main theme one more time.

    Track 21: Why We Fight

This piece comes at an incredibly sad point in the game when Deacon believes that Boozer is dead, that he sacrificed himself to win the fight against the Colonel’s militia. I really wanted players to feel the gravity of this moment. Deacon and Boozer are brothers and Deacon is heartbroken by the thought that he has lost Boozer. I used a simple, somber arrangement of the Days Gone theme here that begins softly and grows with swelling strings and a variation of the tune on solo cello. My hope from the very beginning was for the Days Gone theme to have an element of melancholy and introspection and this is the theme in its saddest, most introspective form.

  • Days Gone: Rebuilding Deacon’s Bike in Real Life

Days Gone: Rebuilding Deacon’s Bike in Real Life

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Bend Studio’s post-apocalyptic biker adventure, Days Gone, is out, and players around the world are diving into the freaker-infested plains of Oregon’s heartland. Days Gone features an open world where everything is constantly trying to kill you. Whether it’s wild animals, marauder gangs or relentless freaker hordes, danger is always lurking. Therefore, you need something to get you out of tight situations. You need a bike!

Deacon’s bike lies at the heart of Days Gone, and players can expect to form a bond with it that goes beyond simply man and machine. PlayStation Nordic set out to bring the bike to life in the real world.

    The Team

A team of four Danes was assembled, each with their own area of expertise.

Patrick is the project lead, and has been given the task of recreating the bike in real life. The garage manager Andreas has been responsible for a motorcycle repair shop for years and knows all the ins and outs of motorcycles. The team’s designer, Rakel, takes care of drafts and sketches. The fourth and last member is Fabian, a mechanic experienced in welding, metal works and building all sorts of vehicles.

More than just a coat of paint

Creating Deacon’s trusty bike takes more than just a coat of paint. It has to be quick, reliable and versatile — a last resort when everything takes a turn for the worse and freakers are pouring in from everywhere.

To make matters even more stressful, the team only had 48 hours to turn an old wreck of a bike into the kind of machine that keeps Deacon from suffering a gruesome, painful death. The team spent day and night in the garage, tailoring the motorcycle to fit the needs of a post-apocalyptic wasteland.

    Denmark got a Motorcycle

As for the final result of the bike, we think we’ll let the pictures speak for themselves. It’s good to know — if there’s ever a global pandemic, where millions upon millions of people are turned into mindless, cannibalistic beings, that there’s a bike cut out for the task somewhere in Scandinavia.

Days Gone is out now, only on PlayStation 4.

  • Fighting the Overwhelming Hordes of Days Gone

Fighting the Overwhelming Hordes of Days Gone

    Reading Time: 5 minutes

When Bend Studio introduces the world to Days Gone, it came with a look at the terrifyingly huge Freaker hordes. These masses of foes flow like water and kill quickly. Players manage massive crowds of enemies, trailing them through macabre killing grounds littered with explosive barrels, choke points, and other tools of destruction. Learn more about hordes in the latest Days Gone Countdown to Launch update with Bend Studio’s Jeff Ross and John Garvin, Creative Director / Writer and Game Director.

    Creating the Horde

“Early in the development of Days Gone, we realized that we had to find a way to create a creature type that was going to be unique to us. And the answer to that was numbers — sheer numbers of them.”
    – John Garvin

“We had to figure out a way to make it fun to fight that many creatures. Because it can’t just be, hey, get up on top of a rooftop and rain down explosives, because that’s not going to be fun. And it can’t just be run for your life and all you’re doing is running. It has to be an experience that is engaging and challenging, but ultimately winnable.”
    – John Garvin

“Once we revealed the horde at E3 2016. It’s so long ago now. It was the moment where the — I think the team was excited about it, but they were guarded, like, do we really have something here. And then just the — from the presentation we put forward to the reaction of the world was really positive, and I think for people who were sort of believers or on the fence, it gave them permission to come on board.”
    – Jeff Ross

    Horde Mentality

“They each have their own ecosystem, they each have a place where they live. They hibernate, they drink, the eat, and they sort of have this migration pattern.”
    – John Garvin

“So if you stumble into a cave, for example, during the day when Freakers hibernate, you will stumble a horde that’s in there hibernating and it’s terrifying because you can actually kind of walk up amongst them and they’re all kind of sleeping. And if you make a noise, then they’ll rise up at once to attack you.”
    – John Garvin

“Where the hordes live, which typically is at mass grave sites that you can find throughout the Farewell Wilderness. it’s really unsettling to see a hundred Freakers sort of swarming over [a mass grave site] like crows at a garbage dump.”
    – John Garvin

“Part of the physiology of Freakers is that they have very, very high metabolisms. They run really hot. And that means that at night, when it’s cooler out, they get stronger. And if it’s raining, they will become stronger. And in the snow they become stronger.”
    – John Garvin

The Right Mindset for Facing a Horde

“Against multiple enemies coming at once, shotguns and their spread are really good at killing them outright or knocking them back a little bit. But against the horde, especially against our larger hordes, what you realize is there’s possibly more horde then there is ammo available. So we have some guns with increased penetration values. When you get these upgrades, what you’ll find is you’re fighting the horde and you should actually aim in such a way that you’re not only aiming at one, but you’re trying to aim at the guy or the other guy behind him. So you can have a bullet go through two or three enemies at once. And it’s almost essential for defeating the horde efficiently.”
    – Jeff Ross

“That’s the key: just thinking about it as a flood. ‘Okay, I’m going to be running from this giant wave. I don’t have a choice, but eventually I’m going to figure out a way to make it a smaller wave and then a smaller wave,’ and eventually you get it whittled down until you’re literally facing that last one — because there’s always a final one — and using your melee weapon to take it out. That’s a very satisfying moment.”
    – John Garvin

“One time I saw a guy beat a horde with just three bullets. He had a plan. He had some strategies in mind, and he executed.”
    – Jeff Ross

“One of the fastest ways to die in Days Gone is to ride your bike into the middle of a horde. And I’ve seen players do that. If you’re riding down the highway and you aren’t paying attention, then you turn a corner and suddenly there’s like 300 Freakers in the middle of the road, it’s easy to lose it and not turn around fast enough. Next thing you know, you’re being swarmed. I recommend not doing that.”
    – John Garvin

“When players are fighting the horde, the emotions I want them to constantly have are a range of different emotions from, “Oh my god. I’m completely overwhelmed. This is impossible” to “I think I can do this” to “I got this” to “Oh no. I don’t got this” to “Oh, holy crap. I’m in trouble. Oh my god.” And then from there it can be, “Oh my god. I totally pulled it off,” or “Oh my god. The last guy killed me.” It’s gonna be the gamut, and that’s what makes it awesome.”
    – Jeff Ross

Confronting hordes — from small to enormous — is one of the most satisfying experiences of Days Gone. Yes, clearing out the map, earning experience, and finding new resources are big incentives for wiping out hordes, but the sense of accomplishment is unparalleled. Once you exterminate one when Days Gone hits PS4 on April 26, you’ll want to clear the entire map.

  • Building Deacon’s Bike in Days Gone

Building Deacon’s Bike in Days Gone

    Reading Time: 5 minutes

Deacon St. John was a biker before the Freaker apocalypse ravaged the world, and it’s the key characteristic that helps him survive in Days Gone. His bike is nimble, durable, threads broken roads, and is fast enough to escape most threats. The motorcycle is more than a useful tool in Days Gone – it’s a lifeline that must be maintained and enhanced. We recently discussed the importance of Deacon’s wheels with Bend Studio’s Jeff Ross and John Garvin, Creative Director / Writer and Game Director.

Without Your Bike, You’re a Goner

“So the bike is your lifeline to the world… It keeps your ammo. It’s what allows you to get out of trouble quickly. And more importantly, it allows you to control where the game gets saved. If you can’t find your bike, you can’t save the game.”
    – Jeff Ross

“Bikes are dangerous but they’re also liberating, and together, it’s what allows Deacon to not only survive the apocalypse, but to prosper as a bounty hunter and really go out into the wild and survive to get out of trouble fast.”
    – Jeff Ross

“Everything about Deacon’s bike is related to surviving a world that’s trying to kill you. It’s the fuel tank so that you don’t run out of gas. It’s the muffler so that you don’t make as much noise. It’s the saddle bags so you can carry more ammo. It’s the nitrous boost so you can gain extra bursts of speed when you’re trying to get away from Runners. It’s the frame of the bike for durability so that you can take more damage.”
    – John Garvin

“And there’s nothing more terrifying than being low on gas, and suddenly, you hear a snarling growl behind you, and you realize that you’re being chased down by Runners, which are infected wolves, and they can run faster than your bike if you haven’t upgraded it, and they can knock you off your bike.”
    – John Garvin

“These are things that Deacon has to be worried about all the time, and then his bike is probably the biggest one. You have to worry about fuel and you have to keep it repaired, so you got to be careful where you’re riding and how, and you’re always mindful of it because if you run out of gas in the Farewell Wilderness, no good is gonna come of that.”
    – John Garvin

“So at bike merchants you can go in and customize the parts that improve all kinds of performance-related aspects of it, from a larger fuel tank so you can go further without running out of gas, faster engines, nitrous, all kinds of things that are performance-related, but all kinds of visual accoutrements, from different parts that add durability, but also they just look different and cool so players can customize it that way. But then they can go into a really, really deep paint system where they can change the paint color, the paint type. They can add decals. We even have custom bike skins. So the players are going to form an attachment to this thing because they need it, but they’re also going to form it because they like what they built.”
    – Jeff Ross

    Nailing the Feel of Riding

“The reason you don’t see many bikes in open-world games is because they are hard to get right. From the physics, to the feel, to how when the character is going around a corner and leaning just to kind of match the fidelity of what it feels like in real life is a huge challenge from a physics point of view but is also just a challenge from player expectations. Players all think they know how motorcycles behave, and they expect to know how they behave in games, and the bar is really high, the expectation bar is really high.”
    – Jeff Ross

“The challenge has been defining this middle ground between being a simulation of a bike to an arcade version of it. So wherever that middle ground is is where we’ve landed. And to me what that means is the player has to be mindful of things like drifting and cornering and approaching things at the right speed and making sure that they’re steering the bike and leaning in midair appropriately so they take less damage when they hit the ground. But we didn’t want to go the full-blown sim route because that would probably be really impossible to control, and we wanted this game to be about action survival.”
    – Jeff Ross

“So weather affects driving conditions just like you would expect in real life. When it’s dry, it’s pretty easy to drive around, not a lot of sliding. When you’re going off-road, it gets a little bit tougher to drive on. But when it’s raining, it definitely — everything you would expect from real life is there. The bike starts to fishtail a lot. When you go around corners, it’s gonna take longer. You’re gonna be kicking up a lot of mud and dust.”
    – Jeff Ross
“By the time I started riding, our motorcycle mechanics were pretty well developed, but it made me appreciate the things we were doing well, like when the characters driving and how he just leans into each turn. And once you start riding — you never understand how important leaning is. You’re leaning instead of steering. So I think that we capture that really well in terms of visual fidelity. And it lends an air of authenticity to the whole thing.”
    – Jeff Ross

As you’ve probably gathered from these developer quotes, much of Days Gone is designed to be experienced atop your bike. Your motorcycle is your best friend, and not long into the game you might feel a twinge of guilt when you take a hard bump or see a Horde knock the bike off its kickstand. The bond between man and machine is central to the gameplay of Days Gone, and you’ll be able to experience when it launches April 26.

Inside Bend Studio – The Team Creating Days Gone

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

When you decide to make a post-apocalyptic survival action game, you’re choosing to live in that brutal world for years. Developing something so ambitious — that balances challenging, surprise encounters with cannibalistic foes and rewarding exploration — is a little crazy. We sat down with Jeff Ross and John Garvin, Creative Director / Writer and Game Director on Days Gone to get into their headspace on the road to the April 26 launch. What we discovered was a crew of talented, time-tested devs that are absolutely driven by their open-world vision.

Bend, Oregon — Where the Magic Happens

“Initially, we really wanted to make something that was beautiful to look at but dangerous to play in. If you’ve been to Central Oregon, you know what I’m talking about. It’s amazing with the snowcapped mountains and these amazing forests. It’s fun to explore, but you’re always looking over your shoulder.”
    – John Garvin

“Living in Central Oregon, it’s a beautiful, diverse landscape, and it’s got all of the elements of a good open-world terrain space. We’re in the high desert, but we’ve got mountains. We’ve got snow. We’ve got forests. We’ve got rocky badlands.

“John and I would be in his office and I would look out the window and say, ‘What if the zombie apocalypse happened, and we were right down there. What would we do?’ I think asking that question — ‘Well, if I was here in this part of town when the apocalypse hit, what would I do?’ — people had some pretty dark ideas about what they would do and how awesome they would be at surviving.”

    – Jeff Ross

    The Bikers of Bend

“We had this core concept of an open world set in the Pacific Northwest — in the high desert specifically — and this core concept percolated throughout the team and we were like, ‘Well, you know, if you have an open world, it should have a way of getting around.’

“And we thought, ‘Okay, the motorcycle, that hasn’t really been a focus of games in the past.’ And we have a bunch of guys in the studio who ride bikes. So that became our original pitch: ‘Hey, an open-world game with a bike and the undead.’ Except they weren’t the undead, they were Freakers.”

    – John Garvin

“The reason we went with a biker is because Deacon St. John sort of epitomizes everything we wanted to explore on the human side of this. So, yeah, he’s a badass and he can use a baseball bat and he knows how to ride a bike. But also the brotherhood and camaraderie that comes with being a member of the MC, that’s something we knew right from the beginning.”
    – John Garvin

The Drive to Create Days Gone

“We’re still a relatively small developer, and I think that we realized somewhere, to compete in this generation of games, you need to set a high mark and you gotta go for it. We’re just crazy enough to bite that off and try to chew it.”
    – Jeff Ross

“I think people in the studio were always looking at some of the choices we were making about being an open-world action survival game. We really made a lot of counterintuitive choices, things that went against the grain of what we do in conventional action games.”
    – Jeff Ross

“I think survival games are really big right now because it goes to a darker fantasy that we all have — not a fantasy where we want our families to be killed and taken from us, but we all watch this media and say, ‘Well, here’s what I would do,’ right? I think the survival genre gives people the chance to answer that once and for all in an interactive world. I think that’s why these games are so enthralling and so captivating to players.”
    – Jeff Ross

“I think it would take a Bend Studio to make a game like Days Gone, because we were crazy. We were crazy when we started building this game to think that 50 people could make a game this expansive. And we just went for it anyway. My first notes on the game are from 2013, and at the time it probably was crazy, but here we are, six years later, and this thing’s about to hit the streets.”
    – John Garvin

You don’t have to wait long to experience the fruits of Bend Studio’s labor of love — Days Gone hits PS4 on April 26. Keep a watchful eye out for more Days Gone Countdown to Launch insights coming all week.

  • How Bend Studio Built the Merciless World of Days Gone

How Bend Studio Built the Merciless World of Days Gone

    Reading Time: 6 minutes

With the April 26 release date of Days Gone creeping ever-closer, the PlayStation.Blog team took a trip to Bend, Oregon to visit the team behind Worldwide Studios’ next journey.

We spent an afternoon with Jeff Ross and John Garvin, Creative Director / Writer and Game Director on Days Gone, respectively, to learn more about the brutal, unyielding world they’ve created. We’ll have a series of video interviews going live over the next few days, but there’s plenty of good stuff we couldn’t fit in the videos! So, as each one goes live we’ll have an accompanying PS Blog post containing a selection of additional quotes and context from our time with John and Jeff. Watch (and read!) each story over the next few days, and you just might make it out of the Farewell Wilderness alive.

Today, we’re looking at the world of Days Gone — how they built it, what makes it tick, and how you can increase your chances of surviving it.

    Remnants of a Crumbled Society

“One of the things that we decided very early on is that we’re only two years in. We hadn’t seen anything that was still this close to when things sort of blew up. So you don’t have massive forests that have overgrown everything, for example, and everything is completely falling apart. Everything’s still kind of intact. Nothing is overgrown, and yet, everything’s in disarray.”
    – John Garvin

“If you ride into Marion Forks, which is a small town, you’ll see that, oh, everything’s been looted. There’s trash everywhere, but the buildings are kinda mostly still intact, and that was a vibe that we really wanted to explore, because, again, we hadn’t seen that in video games.”
    – John Garvin

“NERO is the National Emergency Response Organization. It’s a fictional federal agency in Days Gone that, as the world was ending, was sort of responsible for trying to keep the pandemic from spreading. You’ll find NERO technology — injectors that allow the player to upgrade either their health, their stamina, or their combat focus.”
    – John Garvin

A Test of Your Post-Apocalyptic Survival Skills

“Days Gone started with us asking questions about what we would do in the apocalypse; what choices we would make to survive. Would we be ruthless enough? Would we have the skills and the instincts to do it?

“What we’ve delivered on is a way for gamers to ask themselves those same questions and put those skills to the test in a world that is constantly coming for them in randomized ways. Everybody has their own unique experience, and they’re gonna have to think on their feet. They’re gonna have to strategize. They’re gonna have to have a plan A, a plan B, a plan C, all the way down the alphabet… and they’re gonna have to have more plans when those ones go to hell. It gives players a chance to answer that question: do they have what it takes to survive the apocalypse?”

    – Jeff Ross

“We wanted to tell a positive story so it’s not all doom and despair. For example, clearing out infestation zones is one of the big things you can do in Days Gone, and there’s a benefit to it.

“You’ll unlock safe travel routes, which make it easier to get around. But it also makes the world safer, because there are fewer Swarmers that will spawn in an area if you’ve cleared their infestation zones. The player can make the world safer by taking on hordes. These things kind of tie together in a way to unify who Deacon is. He’s this guy who’s not just gonna stand by and watch the world burn.”

    – John Garvin

“The most important thing to remember if you want to survive in a world that’s trying to kill you is you have to be prepared. Don’t let your gas tank get low. Make sure you know where your next fill-up is coming from. Make sure you’ve got pre-crafted Molotovs or other explodables on you. Make sure you’ve filled up with as much ammo as you can possibly come.

“I think a phrase Jeff Ross came up with a long time ago was “Prepare, go forth, and return.” It’s about knowing that, hey, I’m not just gonna wing this, I’m not gonna set foot outside my safe house or outside this encampment and just hope things work out. You’ve got to be ready.”

    – John Garvin

Time of Day Has Critical Strategic Implications

“We knew we wanted to build an open world that was alive. That meant it had to have weather, obviously, and it had to have a day and night cycle. Then we decided that we wanted to make sure there were important gameplay differences at night versus during the day. Generally, what that means is Freakers are stronger at night… but they’re worth more experience, so there’s a reason to go hunting at night.”
    – John Garvin

“If you go out during the day, you’re going to have to watch out for marauders. They’re gonna try to knock you off your bike, or you’re gonna have to deal with a sniper up in a tree nest. You just don’t know what’s waiting for you.”
    – John Garvin

“One of the features we put in recently is the ability to bunk down in your safe house. So, you have a safe house that you start the game with, but you have to earn the rest. If you don’t like playing at night, you can just bunk down and wait until morning to go out — or the opposite. It’s about your play style and what you want to do while you’re in the world.”
    – John Garvin

Know Your Threats, Then Burn Them

“Freakers are pretty much feral animals. They have some instincts, so they do wind up — they need to eat; they need to sleep. They wind up in a lot of human structures. So there’s no real life there, but there’s something that makes them tick. And they’re animalistic because they do understand danger. So while they’re pretty mindless, there’s still some root level intelligence there, some animalistic intelligence.”
    – Jeff Ross

“Fire is an important element for fighting anything, really. But from a game mechanics point of view, fire is one of those really cool things when you’re building a sandbox because it’s got properties that we all have expectations for. And it actually does lead to a lot of really cool emergent moments. Fire is one of those things that’s just relatable — we all understand how it works. And it’s really cool to see how the game’s systems pay off on a player’s expectations.”
    – Jeff Ross

Deacon is Tough, But Still Human

“Deacon’s not very athletic, which, again, I think is what sort of differentiates him from other heroes of video games. He’s not sprinting up walls and he’s not sliding down ladders really fast. He’s not a superhero and he gets tired. On the other hand, he can ride a bike. So, the guy has got a bike, he’s really good at it, and as a player, you can help him get better at it.”
    – John Garvin

Hopefully now you feel a little more prepared to ride into the harsh world of Days Gone. You’re going to need all the advantages you can get in the brutal post-apocalyptic world. Get more developer insights and gameplay tips as the Days Gone Countdown to Launch continues through the game’s release on April 26.

    Days Gone E3 2016 Trailer – PlayStation

Days Gone is an open-world action-adventure game set in a harsh wilderness two years after a devastating global pandemic. Play as Deacon St. John, a Drifter and bounty hunter who rides the broken road, fighting to survive while searching for a reason to live.

At its core, Days Gone is about survivors and what makes them human: desperation, loss, madness, betrayal, friendship, brotherhood, regret, love – and hope. It’s about how even when confronted with such enormous tragedy they find a reason to live. Hope never dies.
