Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii is a Swashbuckling Spectacle With Unexpected Heart

    Reading Time: 7 minutes

As soon as Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii erupted into a musical number at the intro credits, I knew I was in for a spectacular and bizarre experience, even by Like a Dragon’s standards. There he is, Goro Majima, Mad Dog of Shimano and the game’s protagonist, gesticulating wildly in a plush, purple velvet trimmed coat, as a crew of pirates sing and dance around him about the lures of the open water.

There’s a lot to take in, and plenty of surprises we don’t want to spoil, so let’s go through some of the highlights from the early game. You’re in for a treat.

    Riches to Riches

Majima awakens on the shores of Rich Island, a small plot of land inhabited by a small community. He’s also stricken with a severe case of amnesia and can’t remember who he is or how he got there. Memory or not, Majima is a resourceful character and is soon embraced by good-hearted, morally complex locals and embroiled in numerous brawls that ultimately result in him becoming captain of a ship. Not a bad day’s work.

Rich Island is where Pirate Yakuza starts to introduce its myriad of minigames and activities, true to Like a Dragon form. An early highlight is Goro Goro Kitchen – a cooking minigame where Majima can make health-replenishing meals with ingredients he’s bought or grown. It’s a cheerful flurry of well-timed button mashing, and your performance dictates the quality of the food.

    Naval Battles and Treasure Hunts

Scrapping with enemies at sea and scooping up new riches are two activities considered integral to the pirate experience. Pirate Yakuza introduces both to the mix.

As you explore the seas, clusters of small vessels will intermittently engage with you, sparking water combat. Here, you’ll utilize your ship’s defences, which starts with hard-hitting cannons and a rapid-fire mini mounted on the bow. You’ll have the option to upgrade your ship’s artillery with parts you can scavenge or buy, which’ll come in handy for more powerful foes later on.

The ship combat is a standalone RPG experience. Your crew will gain experience and levels the more you battle, and some members have unique abilities that can give you an edge in a fight. They also have needs and moods – allowing them time to rest and giving the occasional gift will lift their spirits. Having a crew with skills and feelings makes them feel less like static props and more like an actual collection of characters worth caring for, akin to Majima’s Cabaret Czar side plot in Yakuza 0.

These battles are fast-paced and dole out small rewards, akin to the mini-encounters you’ll have on land with small groups of enemies, though it is a little easier to outrun a handful of men than it is to quickly steer your ship away.

Treasure Hunts are presented like a boss rush – your crew disembarks onto a small island and needs to fight through a series of pirate grunts before taking down a boss and copping the treasure at the end. Here, you’ll find unique items that can enhance Majima’s abilities, and of course, bucketloads of cash.

    Sea Dog of Shimano

Majima also picks up a brand-new fighting stance exclusive to Pirate Yakuza – Sea Dog Style. The stance allows him to deliver swift, swishing blows with a pair of cutlasses, alternating between light and heavy attacks and dishing out big AoE damage. Majima can also wield a pistol for long-range attacks – perfect for staggering foes – and a chain hook that will launch him towards an enemy, which can be followed up with more close-range attacks. Later on, Majima can summon deities using ‘Dark Instruments’, strange items plundered from rival pirate gangs. To give you a sense of the abilities here, Majima can summon a giant man-eating shark by shredding on a violin, an outrageous scene to witness.

Majima also carries his classic Mad Dog stance seen in other Like a Dragon titles here too, so if you (for some reason) don’t feel like being an extremely cool, cutlass-swinging pirate, his traditional roster of speedy blows, slick knife attacks and shadow clones to boost attack power is also an extremely fun option.

    The Path to Madlantis

Majima and his crew set sail to the island settlement of Madlantis a few hours into Pirate Yakuza, and it is perhaps one of my favorite locations I’ve seen in a Like a Dragon game. It’s a rogue trove of delights, nestled away inside a cave system and largely constructed from the wreckages of old ships.

Walking through Madlantis feels immediately unsettling in a way that spaces like Kamurocho and Sotenbori rarely do, even in their shadiest spots. It’s shrouded entirely in darkness, illuminated only by colorful neon signs, harsh floodlights and flaming barrels. Suspicious-looking faces are clustered in dimly lit corners drinking, playing card games or beating someone up while onlookers pay no mind.

It’s also home to The Coliseum, where Majima and his crew can face off against other pirate crews to rack up reputation as a feared pirate, as well as other rewards.

Madlantis is one of four distinct locations you’ll visit – Rich Island, Nele and Hawaii all boast their own unique settings, characters and activities, but Madlantis really blew me away as a hive of nefariousness brimming with characters that, again, even by Like a Dragon’s standards, felt truly outlandish.

    The Heart of Yakuza

While a lot of this game presents an off-beat adventure full of swashbuckling and treasure-hunting, it’s still pleasantly rooted in the core themes of the series. While Majima can’t remember who he is, he’s quickly reunited with a roster of Yakuza allies, and his adventures with his new crew must intertwine with the urgent business he’s expected to deal with as a Yakuza boss.

It also touches on some more delicate themes; the perils of fatherhood, the balance between wanting to keep a loved one safe and letting them free, and of course, the ever-present, pertinent question that every Like a Dragon game poses: What it means to be a man.

That said, it’s also just an incredibly funny game. The characters are so wonderfully blasé in the face of total nonsense, which makes it even more entertaining. During one treasure hunt, Majima has a fistfight with a huge brown bear, and afterwards, exclaims “ah, he had a classic grizzly right hook.” Moments like this paired with the above tough emotional storylines coursing through Pirate Yakuza make for a fantastic, rounded adventure.

This is merely a small glimpse into the wacky word that Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii – it’s a truly unique adventure that feels like a fever dream, while remaining loyal to the heart of the main franchise. There’s not long to wait either, you can set sail with Majima when the game launches for Xbox Series X|S on February 21.

For those eager to get a taste of the action right away, a free demo of the game is available to download and play now.

    Grandia

Grandia follows Justin, a young adventurer who fatefully inherits a magic stone and thus sets out to uncover the mysteries of a lost civilization. In his search, he attracts all types of attention. Some good, in that he meets other adventurers who aid him along on his quest. However, some are bad, like the Garlyle Forces who work to keep him from unraveling the truth of the past.

    Meet the Crew

Justin – Driven by his curious and fearless nature, Justin often dives headfirst into situations without thinking. He possesses the mysterious Spirit Stone—an artifact passed down through his family—which plays a pivotal role in his adventures.

Sue – Justin’s childhood friend from the town of Parm. She often joins him on his misadventures, bringing to them her courageous optimism and unexpected maturity that balances out Justin’s impulsiveness. She is almost always accompanied by her flying ball of fluff Puffy, who is as mysterious as he is adorable!

Feena – The most well-traveled of the bunch, Feena has an independent spirit and impressive skillset that garners the respect of those around her, especially Justin. As the journey unfolds, players delve deeper into her multifaceted character and mysterious past.

    Grandia II

Grandia II acquaints us with Ryudo, a Geohound who does odd jobs to get money alongside his loyal eagle companion, Skye. One fateful day, he receives a request from the Church of Granas to serve as a bodyguard to one Elena, Songstress of Granas. Together, they bring out pieces of each other that neither of them knew existed amidst their journey to rid the world of Evil in the form of Valmar, God of Darkness.

Millenia – Uninhibited, playful, and mischievous, Millenia is a force to be reckoned with. Her origins and the nature of her existence cause her relationship with the party to take many interesting and unexpected turns.

    Key Destinations

On your journey, you’re bound to visit many enticing cities. Here are just a few of the places you will come across on your travels:

    Grandia

    • Port City of Parm – Our protagonist Justin’s hometown. The century of adventurers has ended, and the century of the industrial revolution has begun. Once a port of departure for adventurers, Parm City has now developed into a metropolis with two faces, the birthplace of modern industry and a center of trade. This city, where the pleasant sea breeze and the smell of coal coexist peacefully, is full of bright energy of residents striving for a better tomorrow. Order in this city is protected by the Garlyle Force, the Industrial Foundation’s private army. As a port city, Parm’s main food source is fish; the city is comprised mainly of metal houses with sparse vegetation.
    Grandia port
    • Gumbo – A charming village facing the Sea of Mermaids located in a volcanic region with an everlasting summer climate. The land of love with a beautiful emerald green sea, white sand coastline, and many frogs. This is truly a place of relaxation, especially for young lovers. However, a dragon settled on the top of the volcano and began absorbing the volcano’s power, subsequently cooling the surrounding area.
    Grandia village

    Grandia II

    Grandia castle
    • Cyrum Kingdom – A vast colorful kingdom that finds itself along the coast. In the center of this kingdom sits Cyrum Castle, the key to the Cyrum people’s dark history. In Valmar and Lord Granas’ historic battle, the Cyrum people—or People of Darkness as they were once known—served Valmar. However, once he was sealed away, they renounced their commitment to darkness.
    • St. Heim Papal State – thehome to Pope Zera and impressive Granas Cathedral.

This cathedral sits atop a looming mountain overlooking St. Heim. The Granas Cathedral is the largest church to Lord Granas, making it a place of religious significance for his followers.

    What’s New

  • Alisa – Developer’s Cut Brings Us to the Dollhouse

Alisa – Developer’s Cut Brings Us to the Dollhouse

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

Welcome back to the dollhouse. Following last year’s demo featured in the ID@Xbox Demo Fest Showcase, Alisa Developer’s Cut is finally releasing on Xbox One & Series X|S systems. The game aims to be a callback to the golden age of survival horror, all the way down to the native resolutions and pre-rendered backgrounds of the games of old.  The newly released launch trailer aims highlights a mix of the game’s narrative as well as gameplay, featuring an introduction to the game’s story as well as the madness waiting for you inside of the dollhouse.

Alisa’s story takes place in a wartime fantasy universe inspired by the mid-late 1920s. You take the role of Alisa; an elite royal agent tasked with chasing a wanted criminal noted for stealing “blueprints”. However, things seem to go wrong immediately – after a surreal nightmarish experience with doll-like creatures, she wakes up in an old Victorian mansion. There she seems to be only surrounded by doll-like beings that lurk the mansion’s grounds – and aren’t exactly friendly either. Why is she there? What secrets does this strange mansion hold?

    ADC screenshot

In-game, you’ll find yourself faced with highly nostalgic, familiar survival horror gameplay. Alisa is at its core a nostalgic throwback to the classics of the genre. The Developer’s Cut version of the game in this release features some modernized features for accessibility however, including multiple controller layouts (allowing the player to select both tank and non-tank control styles), as well as featuring the optional auto-aim toggle found in the old version of the game. It also features multiple save slots, unlike some older survival horror titles. Other than that, however, the game is a survival-horror classic down to its bones (or, pinwheels rather) – including limited currency-based saving, prerendered backgrounds, and even native 480p (upscaled to modern standards of course).

    ADC shot

Despite taking place in a dollhouse, you’ll find yourself trekking through tons of distinct and zany environments. The game revels in variety and off-kilter humor, with tons of bizarre and surreal environments and enemies for you to overcome. The mysterious mansion is sectioned off into various different distinct areas, some of which include sprawling gardens and bathhouses, and others which are zany and otherworldly like the funhouse. Each area is filled with a sundry assortment of wicked enemies; these can range from zombie-like humanoid dolls to giant ballerinas to disembodied gigantic baby doll heads to strangely proportioned clowns – among others!

    ADC screenshot

Lastly, Alisa features a full array of unique weapons and customizable outfits. Each weapon has a unique combat style and traits. Weapons can include the default sword and then an array of different guns – and possibly other weapons. You can both unlock as well as use your hard-earned pinwheels (the currency of the mansion) to purchase these weapons, outfits, and other items at the puppet shop in the various saferooms in the mansion. Just keep in mind you have limited inventory – so you’ll have to strategize what you take along with you as you venture deeper and deeper into the mansion’s depths.

Developed by Casper Croes and ported to Xbox and published by Top Hat Studios, Alisa Developer’s Cut is out now on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, with a 15% launch discount until February 20th.

Developed by TragicoMedia, a two-man studio composed of myself and Manuel González Larrauri, the game tells a very personal story and has many layers but mainly revolves around the two sides of its plot.

On one hand, the main text of the story about a tourist colony ruled by a foreign corporation and the lives of the many exploited locals that try to survive within it, is very much inspired by Manuel’s experience growing up in a working-class family in Punta del Este, Uruguay. As a coastal tourist town it suffers from most of the game’s fictional ills, such as no real economy beyond service to wealthy foreigners, no interest from the government to care for its population or infrastructure beyond the summer months and an ever rising sense of despair and wish to escape.

    TT screenshot

On the other hand, the game also addresses the issue of touristification, which is not unlike the situation of cultural industries in the global south. Drawing parallels between working as an artist, developer or creative of any kind and living in the Global South. Meaning that one must choose to either entertain the tourists (i.e., Global North audiences) by serving to their tastes, culture and language (i.e., developing game in English based around a gaming culture developed by and for the Global North), or cannibalizing their own culture for profit (i.e., making games in English but featuring highly marketable elements of one’s culture).

    TT screenshot

It’s naive to believe that the games industry should be safe from colonization or the Global North cultural influence, but as artists we are tackling the issue with the tools we have.

Tourist Trap has something of value to add to that objective.

We hope you enjoy Tourist Trap on Xbox!

The Minotaur King has returned…and it’s all your fault!

Woah! You’ve only just started Blossom Tales 2: the Minotaur Princeon Xbox and you’re already causing chaos and getting your brother kidnapped?! Guess it’s time to become the hero (again), set things right and save your brother. Before you do, let’s explore what you might face during your heroic adventure.

    Blossom Tales campfir

We think of Blossom Tales 2: The Minotaur Prince as a heartfelt tribute to both classic adventure games and 80s movies that we loved from our childhood. Movies such as “Labyrinth” and “The Princess Bride” are the best examples and we hope that comes through to our players. Although you play as the protagonist Lily, courageous albeit headstrong, her story is told by her Grandpa who narrates or tells this “story within a story” narrative.

You know how these stories go, the kid keeps on interrupting and suggests how elements of the story should unfold instead. We took that idea and turned it into one of the features of the game. Would you prefer a pig to be your travelling companion instead of a horse? As you wish! What’s your stance on battling badgers over snails? Or maybe you’d like… actually, we better not give away all the secrets, you’ll have to discover the rest yourself.

    Blossom Tales face

Your journey begins with the Minotaur Moon Festival in a quiet town called Blossomdale where you and your brother Chrys do what siblings do best…start bickering. As things escalate Lily unknowingly releases the Minotaur King who kidnaps her brother. Oh no! Better grab your gear and save him.

So, dear player/story-teller, take a seat by the campfire and toast some marshmallows, but don’t get too comfortable, Grandpa’s tale will take you on a journey through haunted forests, pirate infested shores, and other mysterious lands across a vast open world.

  • Take the trip of a lifetime in Maze Theory’s Viveport adventure Doctor Who: The Edge of Time

Take the trip of a lifetime in Maze Theory’s Viveport adventure Doctor Who: The Edge of Time

    Reading Time: 6 minutes

VR has the awesome power to make players feel super-heroic like never before. With Doctor Who: The Edge of Time, arriving to Viveport and Viveport Infinity tomorrow, developer Maze Theory had the herculean task of bringing one of the most iconic heroes in sci-fi history to life in VR, placing a Sonic Screwdriver in their hands and tasking them with protecting the universe. We had a chat with them to find out what went into making this thrilling VR adventure.

Interview by Nathan Allen Ortega, Viveport Staff

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OwjiiXyBaKA?feature=oembed&wmode=opaque&w=730&h=411]

Tell us a bit about yourself and the crew at Maze Theory

Marcus Moresby: I’m the Creative Director here at Maze Theory. We’re a digital entertainment studio focusing on ‘Evolutionary storytelling’ – which is our way of describing narrative adventure experiences, told through new technologies and techniques. Our experience and passions come from the areas of games, immersive theatre, film, TV and narrative drama. We bring interactive elements in to create a new form of participatory entertainment.

How did the concept of Doctor Who: The Edge Of Time come about?

The BBC came in to experience one of our other projects The Vanishing Act and they really liked our attention to detail, production quality and approach to immersive storytelling in VR. From there we started talking about Doctor Who and how well the show translated into the medium of VR.

At it’s best, VR is like a teleportation device allowing players to travel to distant worlds, far-away places and go on incredible adventures in space and time. It was obvious to us straight away in that meeting that Doctor Who would translate into a perfect VR title.

By chance, The Doctor Who Experience, a live attraction in Cardiff that documented the show’s 55 year history and exhibited many of its props, sets and characters was about to close. We got talking about photogrammetry and next thing you know we were down in Cardiff creating a digital record of the whole experience. It’s all on a hard-drive in our office.

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jtgumb-HreA?feature=oembed&wmode=opaque&w=730&h=411]

With access to a wealth of incredible data we couldn’t help ourselves to make a weeping angels demo in VR and things just from snowballed from there.

What have been your biggest inspirations on the design concepts in The Edge Of Time?

We’ve focused on giving people the chance to inhabit and exist in the world of Doctor Who and the show. One of our main pillars in the production was to make you feel like you’re stepping into your own episode of the show. That’s why it was important to include the title sequence, which while breathtaking in VR, isn’t a traditional gameplay mechanic.

We’ve also tried our best to give fans experiences they’d want to have in the world of Doctor Who. Allowing them to pilot the Tardis, come face to face with the Daleks, to solve puzzles and games with the Doctor’s trusty Sonic Screwdriver.

At the same time, it was important not to alienate non Doctor Who fans. Both ourselves and the  BBC want to encourage new audiences to enjoy this universe. At it’s core, it’s a time-travel adventure in VR spread throughout the universe. There’s a combination of sci-fi, horror, adventure and action, all mixed up.

What kind of research did you do to prepare for the task of bringing the world of the popular series to VR?

With a show spanning as many series as Doctor Who we knew we’d have to be thorough with our research. Initially I spent a few weeks completely absorbing myself into it and focused on 70 episodes from the 37 series. Anything that I thought would work particularly well as an interaction, story line or environment was noted down. Then I scoured the various fan sites and forums to view their opinions on favourite episodes, monsters and what they would love to see or experience in a Doctor Who game.

How challenging was it to figure out which Doctor Who creatures, worlds and iconic elements from the series to incorporate into the game?

The BBC have been amazing to work with and initially we gave them a wish-list of all the monsters and places we wanted to include. This led to various discussions regarding the direction and roadmap of the new series and where this experience would fit into the universe. They’ve all been selected because of how powerful they’d be in VR. Standing next to a Dalek in VR with the legendary screaming voice really is intimidating. The Angels were a perfect fit too and VR is probably the only medium you could truly experience them.

Tell us a bit about your collaboration with the BBC and the creative team on the Doctor Who series throughout the process of crafting your immersive VR experience

What’s been wonderful is we got to co-write the game with Gavin Collinson, who’s worked on the show since the David Tennant days. It’s meant we’ve managed to get the story right from the perspective of a VR player and they’ve got it all working with the shows’s cannon. It’s really been a collaborative process with the team at the BBC and why we hope the end story works so well.

Were there any story moments, puzzle concepts or other cool ideas that you had that you wanted to incorporate into the game but had to leave it on the cutting room floor?

With a show so vast there’s a ton of material and related gameplay ideas we had to hold back. What a lot of people don’t realize about Maze Theory is we’re a very small team. Only 6 core people worked on the game, but we’ve all tried to hit a close to AAA aesthetic and game. It’s about a 3 hour experience, so not easy to make with such a small team.

Consequently there were a tonne of ideas that haven’t made the cut. On the plus side, there’s lots of good starting points for a sequel.

What was it like working with Jodie Whittaker?

Jodie’s great and a complete natural with her take on the Doctor. We managed to squeeze in some time with her in between shoot days on set in Cardiff and because she’s fully in character we got through a tonne of lines and dialogue in half the time you’d normally expect.

What do you feel are the key things about Doctor Who that make it such a global, decades spanning phenomenon?

Time travel, adventures and science fiction, good drama, strong concepts and story writing – what’s not to like? What we love more is how this personality and character naturally translates to VR.

How long have you and the team been working on The Edge Of Time?

It’s been just under a year since we started main production on the game. It’s been a pretty mammoth task for everyone involved but as we get to the end of the project everyone is really proud of the title and what we’ve achieved.

What’s on the horizon for Maze Theory?

We’re thrilled to be working on Peaky Blinders and have just commenced production. It focuses heavily on human interaction and how you can make a character feel alive inside a virtual world. Everyone’s very excited about the idea of traveling back to the 1930’s and the narrative adventure you get with a gangster title like that.

We’re also working on a couple of own concepts internally. It’s important for us that we aren’t just known for big IP projects and we imagine our third title will be something unexpected which learns from our previous R&D.

That’s exciting to hear! Thanks so much for taking the time to chat with us.

All Along The Witching Tower with Daily Magic Productions

    Reading Time: 6 minutes

The recently released Witching Tower (also available in Viveport Subscription) puts you inside a fantasy world ravaged by an undead scourge. Wielding a variety of tools and weapons, you’ll have to wade through armies of deadly enemies, solve a bevy of devious puzzles, and ultimately confront the Queen of the Tower in order to release the world from her dark influence.

We sat down to chat with Daily Magic Production’s Marianna Vallejo so we could find out how their team crafted this visually dynamic and atmospheric narrative fantasy adventure.

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r-5R7GSr7bk?feature=oembed&wmode=opaque&w=730&h=411]

Tell us a bit about yourself and the team at Daily Magic?

I have background in game design and I was always a fan of mystery games and anything mysterious. I founded Daily Magic when I saw the game Mystery Case Files: Return to Ravenhearst, which inspired me to create similar story driven experiences. We founded Daily Magic in 2010 and since then we’ve developed and shipped more than 25 titles for various platforms. Most of them exist in “puzzle adventure” genre, and after the debut of current VR technology, we decided to transform all that “adventure” experience we gained over the years into VR. And that’s how Witching Tower was started.

What inspired your team to make the leap into VR with Witching Tower?

In the early days of VR, we saw the title Vanishing Realms and thought “Hey, that’s what we’ve been doing for all these years, but in 2D! We should try to bring what we do to the world of VR”. The technology itself was fascinating and when I first experienced VR, I was like “Wow, I can be inside the game now!”. Witching Tower started as a more casual game and at some point it was even inspired by the classic Rapunzel fairy tale. We soon realized that we needed to drop the casual approach and stick to something more dark and mysterious with deeper themes.

Daily Magic’s background is in mobile and PC development. How did these experiences influence the creative direction of Witching Tower?

When we were doing adventure games for PC, we were working with casual game publisher Big Fish Games. It was a great experience where we learned how to make very intuitive user experiences, which is especially useful for developing for VR. Yes, the players are hardcore, but there’s already a lot going on in VR and they need to be able to do everything in the game using just a few control buttons and the experience can’t be too complex or overwhelming.

On a more creative side, we love experimenting with dark stories, but historically haven’t had a chance to explore those kinds of concepts in depth. With our past development experience, it was pretty easy to come up with the mystery at the core of the game, but this time we explored the narrative concepts further with added supernatural elements like necromancy and mind control. Our previous experience designing hundreds of puzzles definitely influence our game design in a way that is challenging but intuitive, and always presented in a way that feels natural to the player.

Were there any particular influences on the tone and world of Witching Tower?

I would say the main influences are Dark Souls 3 and Skyrim. We really wanted to match that look and feel of Dark Souls and we wanted try to make the gameplay as interesting as Skyrim. We also wanted to do something that looks good, but isn’t too complex on the development side. From our experience, crafting dark environments with atmospheric weather like rain or snow helps create a  mysterious vibe pretty much immediately.

How long has Witching Tower been in development? How big is the team working on it?

Our first prototype took us about 5 months to develop, where we then we took a break to show it around to get vital feedback, as well as searching for funding, which were factors on whether we should go forward with making a full experience out of it. The process go us so fascinated with VR development in general, so we decided to make a full version of Witching Tower no matter what. It took us an additional year since then to complete the game.

Were there any particular challenges you encountered during development?

Our biggest challenge was transitioning between development of 2D games to 3D, as well as learning how to work within the Unreal Engine. With VR specifically, the main design challenge was to craft interactions and puzzles that would be satisfying in an immersive 3D space, which is drastically different from traditional PC experiences. This challenge inspired us to create the ‘lasso’ mechanics and ‘controlling undead’ mechanics in Witching Tower, because it’s just so fun to move your hands and see the characters react to it. Adding free locomotion later in development also proved challenging, since we didn’t expect so many people would be demanding it. Early Witching Tower streamers commented on it and we listened, and while it’s not perfect, we feel proud of how it turned out for our first crack at it.

Were there any enemies/weapons/items that you wanted to work into the game but had to be left on the cutting room floor for whatever reason?

We really wanted to create a more elaborate introduction segment, where Queen Elenwen is manipulating the player’s mind and playing “chess” with skeletons (like in Harry Potter). We actually did build a version of the sequence, but then in execution it felt a bit too chaotic and were concerned players wouldn’t be able to make sense of what’s going on. We didn’t want to overwhelm players with mechanics, especially so early in the experience.

What are your thoughts on VR and the role it plays in the world of adventure and puzzle game design?

I think the adventure genre and VR are a perfect match. VR really brings storytelling and exploration to the next level, it’s just so exciting to be able to explore environments in new and immersive ways, and feel like you’re in the story in a whole new way. The tools of VR also change the game for creating and interacting with puzzles, as well. It can allow for really ambitious and unique challenges for the player to sold, like the gigantic planet puzzle in Witching Tower for example. Puzzle complexity needs to be tweaked and adjusted for VR, however, as really obtuse or  brainy stuff can prove overwhelming with that interface.

What do you want players to take away from their time with Witching Tower?

We really want players to enjoy the detailed environments we’ve worked really hard at crafting and have fun with the lasso and skeleton controlling mechanics. We would be happy if players can interact with everything they find in the world, and feel their blood pumping as they combat the various dangerous enemies that populate the tower.

What’s next from Daily Magic? Any interest in developing more exciting adventures in VR?

We have already started working on our next VR game, called Revival! We learned a lot from the development of Witching Tower and want to expand upon it all in our new game, especially in regards to the combat, with the addition of shooting mechanics. We are also planning an Arena mode for the Witching Tower, a 10-15 minute experience for arcades and location based entertainment operators. We definitely want to experiment more with plot twists and story integration in future experiences, but most importantly we’re excited for new gameplay features we’re going to build in the new game, after we collect feedback from Witching Tower players.

That’s super exciting! Thank you for speaking to us, we can’t wait to see what you’ve got coming next!

Nintendo Video is ready to launch a fresh lineup of great new shows for the fall. The free video application for the Nintendo 3DS family of systems will debut new short-form videos starting Nov. 1 that will continue into 2014. Five new series have been slated, including two featuring The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HDand Pikmin 3.

Owners who have downloaded the Nintendo Video application from the Nintendo eShop will automatically receive the new shows on their device, including:

    • The Legend of Zelda: The Misadventures of Link: This original series of comedic shorts shows Link, the series‘ star, in a new and hysterical light. His surroundings will be familiar to fans of the series, since the shorts are based on The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD game for the Wii U console.
    • Pikmin Nature Documentaries: These „nature documentaries“ explore the wonderful world of the tiny Pikmin. The animations, highlighted by dramatic voiceover work, are a tongue-in-cheek take on safari nature shows.
    • Bravest Warriors: The latest hit show created by Pendleton Ward, the mind behind Adventure Time, follows four teenage heroes-for-hire as they warp through galaxies to save adorable aliens and their worlds using the power of their emotions. The series is produced by Frederator Studios and launched on the Cartoon Hangover channel on YouTube. New episodes of Bravest Warriors will appear every Friday on Nintendo Video.
    • Wildheart Riukiu: This new series of 3D shorts comes from the creator of Meat or Die, which has already amassed more than 5 million views on Nintendo Video. Wildheart Riukiu incorporates charming 16-bit graphics with some not-so-charming, but hilarious, characters. Think ninja puppets.
    • Bee and PuppyCat: A Cartoon Hangover Shorts fan favorite, this two-part series by Natasha Allegri follows Bee, an out-of-work 20-something who has a life-changing collision with a mysterious creature she names PuppyCat.

„This latest set of great new shows for Nintendo Video gives fans a unique way to enjoy two of their favorite Nintendo franchises, in addition to hand-picked series from some of the most imaginative and successful creators in the world of animation,“ said Tony Elison, Nintendo of America’s senior director of Business Development.

Fred Siebert, founder and executive producer of Frederator Studios, producer of the new Bravest Warriorsseries, said, „Cartoon Hangover is honored to be part of Nintendo’s entry into the new golden age of TV innovation.“

Since launching in July 2011, Nintendo Video has delivered a variety of premiere and exclusive videos automatically to Nintendo 3DS owners. The Nintendo Video application is available to download for free from the Nintendo eShop.
