As an avid reader, I’m always looking for ways to stretch my book budget. I stock my library whenever I see a bargain, including deals for ebooks to add to my virtual shelves. Luckily, Google Play Books offers features to help bookworms like me save on our ever-growing reading lists.

Here are five ways you can find great deals, and great reads, on Google Play Books:

    1. Find your personalized deal collection

When you visit the Books tab on Google Play or use the Play Books Android app, you’ll see a “Recent price drops“ collection with ebooks you might like, now at a lower price. (I recently bought “A Man Called Ove” from the collection for just $2.99). And in the Android app, you’ll also see a badge on a book’s cover if its price has recently dropped, showing you how much you’ll save.

    2. Subscribe to a series and save

Subscriptions are a great way to keep up with your favorite series and read the latest titles right away. And as an added bonus, thousands of series offer subscriber discounts on future releases. Readers in select countries can now subscribe on series’ pages if a subscription offer is available.

Use digital tools to grow and thrive

Search interest in “cost of living” reached a 10-year high in the U.S. in 2022, as many people continue to find new ways to manage financial uncertainty. For women in the United States looking for information about financial assistance, including federal government benefits like the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), we’ve made it even easier to access help on Google Search. With a quick search, you can find answers to commonly asked questions, including eligibility criteria, how to apply and locally relevant contact information.

Also according to global search trends, interest in women-owned businesses has increased 1.5 times over the last five years. Google Ads is helping accelerate the reach for some of these businesses. Asutra,an affordable, natural, ethically-sourced wellness company, credits a 75% increase in Google generated revenue across all ad campaigns. And Trang Dang, founder and CEO of Ru9, the first company in Vietnam to manufacture and sell foam mattresses, used revenue from Google Ads to expand their business to brick and mortar stores in both Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi and grew their employee base from two people to almost 50 people.

This March, we hope everyone will take the opportunity to learn about the amazing women in their lives and learn more about the impact women have around the world with the help of Google.

“How to read more books” became a breakout search term over the past five years, reaching an unforeseen spike in April 2022 and rising again with the new year. It’s also a goal that might be surprisingly more complicated to pull off than it sounds. Between finding the time, choosing titles you’ll actually want to finish and keeping track of your reads, it can be easy to get overwhelmed. But there are a bunch of Google tools that can help you hit the books now — and all year long. Here’s how to read more books in 2023 and beyond with some help from Google.

Read and browse with Google Books

Google Books is a vast resource that can help you in every step of your reading journey, from accessing free books, to reviewing the books you’ve already read to keeping track of the (ever-growing list of) titles you want to read. Here are some tips for how to get started:

    • Browse Google Books’ 10 million free books. The online library is home to more than 10 million free books, and plenty more than you can pay to access.
    • Preview books before buying. No buyer’s remorse, thanks. You can use the “preview” option on a book’s page in Google Books to get a sense of whether you’ll like a certain title or author before you buy the book.

Many families come to Google Play to find apps and games for everyone in the household to enjoy. Now we’re adding a new easier way for families to safely purchase both paid apps and in-app purchases.

On Google Play, you’re already able to set up a family payment method, which lets family managers share a common form of payment with their family members on different Android devices. If you choose to share your family payment method with children under 13 (or the applicable age in your country), you also have controls to approve or decline any purchases they make. And if a family member uses the family payment method, you can easily see all transactions together in your Google Play order history.

Today we’re introducing another tool for families: Purchase Requests. Now, if you don’t have a family payment method set up, children will be able to send a purchase request directly to the family manager. You can then evaluate the request and important information about the app or in-app purchase on your own device, and decide if the purchase should be completed or not. If you decide to complete the purchase, you can use your own stored payment methods, including Google Play gift cards. Family managers will receive notifications for these purchase requests real time, but you can also view it in an approval request queue to decide later. And just like with the family payment method, transactions completed via Purchase Requests will all be available in your Order History.

Born and raised in Salvador, Brazil, Filipe has always been fascinated with his country’s culture and past. So much so that he decided to study history, eventually becoming a teacher and researcher. Also a long-time gamer, Filipe saw gaming as a creative way to tell stories — and realized it was a good medium to reach people beyond the classroom and share Brazil’s heritage with the world.

So together with his business partner, Victor, he founded Aoca Game Lab. Now a team of eight people, Aoca Game Lab recently launched their first title on mobile, ÁRIDA: Backland’s Awakening, a survival game following the adventures of a young girl in the historic town of Canudos, Brazil. And they were recently selected as one of Google Play’s Indie Games Fund recipients, which supports small games studios based in Latin America.

Filipe shared his story in our latest film for #WeArePlay, which celebrates people around the world building apps and games. We chatted more with Filipe about combining his passions for history and gaming, what’s next for the studio and the team’s recent trip to Canudos to introduce the game to those who inspired it.

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

One day, Annabel Angwenyi was running errands in Nairobi, Kenya when her car refused to start. She called her usual mechanic, but he was busy helping another customer on the opposite side of town. She knew there must be another mechanic close by, but because many local businesses don’t have an online presence, she had trouble finding and contacting someone else. Annabel was frustrated — but she also saw an opportunity to solve a problem.

After a lot of research, hard work and perseverance, she and her co-founder Patrick launched Ziada, an app that connects people across Kenya to local service providers. Today, Ziada has a team of seven people and over 60,000 downloads on Google Play.

Annabel is one of the founders featured in #WeArePlay, which spotlights the people behind Google Play’s apps and games. We chatted with Annabel to learn more about how she got Ziada up and running with no tech experience, and the impact it’s had on the local community.

How did you turn your idea into an app?

Patrick and I didn’t have any tech experience — we’re both business people. So in 2017, we partnered with a software developer who believed in our dream and helped us create the app. After a lot of hard work, we published the first version of Ziada on Google Play that same year. But it didn’t really take off. We weren’t sure if the Kenyan market was ready for something like this, so we took a break.

Then when the pandemic started in 2020, we noticed people wanted to access more things on demand and online, like food delivery and taxi services. So we rebranded the app, including improving the user interface to better reflect how we could help, and launched again. Now, our app has over 60,000 downloads on Google Play and is helping service providers across Kenya find new customers.

A person wearing a yellow short-sleeved shirt smiles and holds a phone showing the Ziada logo on the screen.

What impact has your app had on the community?

Kenya is an entrepreneurial nation, with people just like us wanting to build something for themselves. Having owned small businesses in the past, we knew the app had potential to help others grow their businesses. And it makes us so happy to see this actually happening. I’m also really proud of how we’re helping women — who make up 38% of service providers on Ziada — create their own income. I believe when you empower women, you empower the whole community. It’s something that’s really close to our hearts at Ziada. Most of our team are women, and many of us mentor young girls in the community. In fact, two of our mentees are joining Ziada as software developers.

A group of seven people sitting around a table, smiling and working on laptops.

Any advice for someone starting their own app or game business?

Just jump in. I think that initial leap of faith is the hardest one to make — it definitely was for me. The app or game will never be 100% perfect, and if you wait for that moment, the train may have already left (both in terms of user needs and market share).

If you have a working prototype or early version of your app, get it on Google Play and build hype around it. I was surprised at how patient our users were with Ziada in its early days, even with all its shortcomings. But that’s because they wanted it to work. If you’re providing a good solution to a problem, the adopters will come.

    What’s next for Ziada?

We’re always working on new services, like helping contractors rent equipment and tools to complete jobs or providing coaching through our upcoming business advisory service. We also want to keep partnering with growing, local businesses and expand our user base — not just in Kenya, but across the African continent. There’s so much potential here, and we’re only just getting started.

Though women are playing mobile games at record numbers and make up 45% of gamers, they are heavily underrepresented in the gaming industry and as protagonists in video games. At Google Play, we have a mission to make mobile gaming truly for everyone by enabling women to be celebrated and empowered as both players and creators.

In 2017, we launched the Change The Game Design Challenge to inspire teens to turn their passion for gaming into careers. The Design Challenge has grown from just a five-winner program at its start, to now educating 100 students across the U.S. and Canada this year. Since our launch, we have been humbled by the creativity and drive of the teens who have participated in the program. Some have used their Design Challenge experience as a springboard to their gaming education in college. Others have taken the path of service, using their experience to mentor the next generation of young women in gaming. As the Design Challenge grows and reaches more applicants, what remains constant is the genuine interest and commitment our participants share for driving positive change for the industry.

Starting today, we’ll be accepting submissions for our 2021 Change The Game Design Challenge. We’re calling on teens to become Game Changers by sharing an original game idea and a unique vision for the future of the gaming industry. With school being virtual for the past year, and with a lot of us spending more extra time at home than usual, we’re hoping applicants think of our challenge as a fun way to switch things up while learning something new.

Much like last year, the 2021 Design Challenge will be virtual. Participants whose game ideas are chosen will be invited to an online game development workshop hosted by our partner, Girls Make Games. The workshop will consist of four sessions that will kick off in June and run through the end of the summer. At the end of the workshop, participants can expect to have made new friends and learned skills needed to create a playable game, no coding experience required. These Game Changers will also receive the materials from the workshop, a certificate of completion, custom swag and a brand-new Chromebook to help them continue to grow in their game development journey.

For a chance to participate in this workshop and join a group of innovators, applicants should fill out this entry form and share an original game idea. We’ll be reviewing entries on a rolling basis between now and July 31. The Change the Game Design Challenge is open to U.S. and Canadian residents only, subject to exceptions. For more details on submission guidelines and how to enter, please visit g.co/ctgdesignchallenge.  At Google Play, we are excited to invest in a new class of Game Changers.

Google Play’s Change The Game program is now open for the 2021 Design Challenge to promote game development for girls.

Every summer my family spends a week at a lake house, boating, barbecuing and reading books. My wife and I each choose a few books to share in our family library and read them at the same time on our devices. It gives us a chance to introduce each other to new genres and authors. I typically read thrillers and sci-fi, while my wife prefers a  mix of literary fiction and celebrity memoirs.

This year, we used the Google Play Books Android app’s new features to discover and organize our vacation reading list. Here’s how we’re using Google Play Books for our very informal summer book club:

    Customize your bookshelves

One top request from Play Books readers was for customizable shelves.  With custom shelves, you can organize and sort your books into themed collections.  We made a shelf for our must-read ebooks for “Summer 2021.”  You can also designate your “All-time favorites“ so you always  have a list of recommendations ready. Create a “Family listening” shelf for the audiobooks you’re saving for a family road trip. Custom shelves make it easy to find the right book at the right time.

Use filters to find your ideal read

Readers also told us that they wanted an easy way to find titles for specific reading needs. Now you can browse by filters like language (to find titles written in a specific language), price range (to see books in your budget) and price drop (to see discounted books).

Find deals on the books you want to read

Customized discount notifications in the Android app now help you find more deals. If you sample or wishlist a book, you’ll receive an email if that title is discounted in the future (just make sure you’re opted in to marketing emails from Google Play). Take advantage of this feature by wishlisting the titles that interest you when you come across them in the Play Books app.

With custom shelves, store filtering and deal alerts, you have even more ways to find your next great read on Google Play Books. To get you started, here’s our “Summer 2021” shelf:

A custom shelf featuring six books: The Last Thing He Told Me by Laura Dave, Later by Stephen King, What’s Mine and Yours by Naima Coster, The Code Breaker by Walter Isaacson, A Master of Djinn by P. Djèlí Clark, and Billie Eilish: In Her Own Words by Billie Eilish.

Hopefully that gives you a little inspiration in creating your own. Here’s to a well-read summer.

On September 4, we’re celebrating some of the best indie talent on Google Play during the Indie Games Festival finals for Europe, Japan and South Korea. This year the three festivals are virtual, so you can join us to discover the games, meet the developers who created them, cheer them on and be the first to hear who the winners are.

In June we kicked off the Indie Games Festival – a competition to celebrate the innovation and creativity that indie developers bring to Google Play. We received thousands of submissions, showing our judges how unique and diverse our games developer community is.

The panel of judges have now selected 20 games in each region – listed below – to go forward to the finals on September 4. Each finalist receives exclusive promotions and prizes that give their games the recognition they deserve.

So, don’t miss out. Expect plenty of fun and some very special surprises. Sign up now to virtually attend the festivals for Europe, Japan and South Korea. The events are free to attend and will all take place in the same space, so sign up to one and you will be able to teleport to all events!
