Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game – Complete Edition is out now on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, giving players a chance to once again team up with friends and fight for love in a remastered version of the classic 2D beat-‘em-up that first launched in 2010.
Inspired by the movie and graphic-novel series, the game lets players kick, punch, and bash their way across Toronto as Scott and friends battle the League of Seven Evil Exes (and their legions of hipsters, ninjas, monsters, zombies, and robots) through snowy streets, eerie forests, bustling film sets, and crowded music venues.
Up to four players can join in for local or online co-op, letting them tackle the story and level up their characters together while reviving each other, sharing health and coins, and launching devastating group super-attacks. Players can also square off in competitive dodgeball and battle royal matches, or team up for the challenging Boss Rush and Survival Horror modes.
Playable on Xbox Series X|S via backwards compatibility, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game – Complete Edition preserves everything fans loved about the original, including music by Anamanaguchi, pixel-art animation by Paul Robertson, and cutscenes by series creator Bryan Lee O’Malley. It also packs in all of the original game’s DLC, including playable characters Knives Chau and Wallace Wells, and the multiplayer-friendly modes mentioned above.

The debut S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 trailer at the Xbox Games Showcase was all about the atmosphere. We have made quite a bit of progress since July, and we decided to go forward, sharing an in-engine gameplay teaser. That seems like a neat way to kickstart a new year, right?

It’s time for a taste of how the game actually feels. Fast-paced changes of scenery, ominous landscapes and the ever-present feeling of an inevitable danger.
You’re seeing this world through the eyes of a stalker named Skif— remember the codename, you will hear it a lot. Following the steps of its predecessors, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 introduces a completely new main protagonist. His actions will shape the new grand chapter in the history of the Zone.
The short scene takes place in the ruined school on the outskirts of the dead town of Pripyat. That’s an extremely dangerous place, and nobody would like to be here on their will. Still, the place doesn’t seem completely abandoned: there is a freshly started fire with a guitar nearby. However, Skif hardly has time to acknowledge that: he seems in a hurry. It looks like an inevitable danger is following him.
And here it is: an emission. A signature part of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series, a powerful release of the anomalous energy from the center of the Zone. Emission happens from time to time and it’s extremely dangerous: it can kill you in the blink of an eye. When a stalker notices a start of emission, they should hide immediately and wait for the end of it, hoping they can get through. So that’s why Skif is in a hurry: he is certainly looking for cover in the nearby building.
The situation is far from safe, though: the building is half-ruined, and the PDA doesn’t seem to work: the signal is lost. All things considered, it’s easy not to notice someone hiding in the shadows. He does look familiar, though…
Some of our fans may recognize the hardly-distinguishable guitar motive. If this tune evokes your nostalgia feelings, that’s because it’s taken from a “Life Line” song by famous Russian rock band Splean We found it to fit just perfectly in the scene we created. If you are hearing this tune for the first time, we recommend listening to the full version — it’s sad and moving at the same time. And extremely catchy, if you ask us.
Finally, we would like to finish this update with a development status. We’re progressing smoothly, including Xbox Series X/S versions as well. The aim is to deliver the product of the highest quality possible on every platform it’s announced for. With fast SSD, RTX support (both Series X and S) and 4K-resolution (Series X), we’re pleased to see how S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 is shaping up to be the ultimate experience we’ve initially promised.
The exact release date of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 is yet to be announced by GSC Game World. But you can be confident the game will come to Xbox Game Pass on day one. We’re more than excited for all the new Xbox fans to experience S.T.A.L.K.E.R. for the first time.

The Yakuza Remastered Collection – January 28 / Yakuza 6: The Song of Life – March 25
The Yakuza games have been making a big splash on Xbox recently, especially once the most recent titles hit Xbox Game Pass last year, and the critically acclaimed Yakuza Like a Dragon launched alongside Xbox Series X|S. Later this month, The Yakuza Remastered Collection, which gathers Yakuza 3, Yakuza 4, and Yakuza 5 will land on Xbox Game Pass. Then, in March, Yakuza 6: The Song of Life will be added to the service, completing the Kazuma Kiryu story arc of the Yakuza saga. This means that fans will finally be able to play the entire saga of The Dragon of Dojima, from Yakuza 0 to Yakuza 6, with one Xbox Game Pass subscription!

u/breadtangle neatly tucked a pair of Logitech z506 speakers on the sides of the barrel, where they could be protected by the overhang of the glass screen cover.
Hardware
The build’s joysticks and buttons came from Amazon, and they’re set into an off-cut piece of kitchen countertop. The glass screen protector is another Amazon find and sits on a rubber car-door edge protector.
The screen itself is lovingly tilted towards the controls, to keep players’ necks comfortable, and u/breadtangle finished off the build’s look with a barstool to sit on while gaming.

Classic Mode
Classic Mode takes the gameplay of Bloodstained and dials it back a few decades to feel just like the classic platformers of your past. It’s a retro experience you won’t want to miss.
Classic Mode contains five levels of enemies and sub-bosses that lie between you and your ultimate goal: Gebel. Can you survive his devious traps? It will take all your old-school skills to make it to the end before you run out of lives.
This isn’t a casual sightseeing tour, you’ll face a horde of demons that stand in your way. To survive, you need your platforming skills and your trusty swordwhip. Additional shards can be picked up throughout the Classic Mode levels, each with its own special properties. You can only have one shard at a time, so you will have to change your tactics to suit your currently equipped ability.
When you finish Classic Mode, you’ll be graded on time, score, and number of deaths across three difficulty modes.
Ready to play Classic Mode? Download the latest update today and choose Extra Mode from the main menu. Select the Classic Mode option and prepare yourself for a new (old) adventure. A completed playthrough of the core game is not required to play Classic Mode. Just jump in and go kick demon butt.
Kingdom Crossover
Our friends at Raw Fury included Bloodstained characters in Kingdom: Two Crowns and it’s time for us to return the favor!
Included with this free update is a new Boss Area created in the Kingdom: Two Crowns style. The area is hidden within the existing castle when playing as Miriam. To find it, you will need to first defeat Bathin and then locate and acquire the Crown of Creation. That crown will be your key to the new area…if you can find it. It will not appear on the map (and will not affect your map completion).
When you find the hidden area, you will have to defeat a Kingdom: Two Crowns boss. Should you succeed, you will be rewarded with a new Familiar Shard that can be used throughout the game.
Bloodstained is an exploration-focused, side-scroller action RPG packing all of the best features you've come to know and love from the Metroidvania genre into a single, content-packed game. Play as Miriam, an orphan scarred by an alchemist’s curse which slowly crystallizes her body. In order to save herself, and indeed, all of humanity, she must battle her way through a demon-infested castle summoned by Gebel, her old friend whose body and mind has become more crystal than flesh.
Puzzle adventure Down in Bermuda is available today on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. After an unnatural storm brings his plane down, adventurous aviator Milton is left stranded for decades within the infamous Bermuda. It’s your job to help the cute little guy make his way across six puzzle abundant islands in order to help him escape back home to his loved ones.
Down in Bermuda is a quirky adventure filled with puzzles to solve and mysteries to uncover. It’s a combination of logic puzzles and hidden object hunting wrapped in a vibrant world set deep within the infamous Bermuda triangle.
You will come across an array of strange and interesting creatures in Down in Bermuda. Some there to help you, like D.A.V.I.D. the AI computer who was left behind in an abandoned underwater laboratory in Secret Base island. Some not so helpful, like the terrible Kraken in Shipwreck island who’s been wreaking havoc in the local Mercreatures seaweed farm.
Each island is filled with unique challenges and an interesting cast of characters to discover. There is a tribe of teeny tiny Rock Warriors, Bermuda Bill Bottomsworth (a silly pirate who likes to play games with hidden treasure), cute little Forest Folk who’ve accidentally turned off the power to their home tree, and a huge slumbering Comet Monster who can be brought back to life with a little warm lava bath.

As Milton progresses through the islands his memory begins to become a little less hazy and you start to learn about the family he has awaiting his return. The new Galaxy S21 series comes with a more cohesive Android experience and updates that make it easier to stay in touch with friends and family. From your phone, you can now mirror Google Duo to your Samsung TV, so video calls feel a little more like the real thing. With the Messages app, you can use Rich Communication Services (RCS) to chat over Wi-Fi, know when messages are read, share reactions as well as high resolution videos, and enjoy a more dynamic communication experience with features such as Smart Actions and spam protection (varies by carrier and market availability). A single swipe from your home screen will give you the option for personalized content with Discover, while our screen reader TalkBack has been revamped so that people with blindness or trouble seeing their displays can use spoken feedback and gestures to navigate their phone without having to look at the screen (varies by carrier and market availability).
We’re also working with Samsung to make it easier to manage smart home products from your device. You can control Nest devices, like Nest thermostats, cameras and doorbells, from the SmartThings app on Galaxy smartphones and tablets. See all your connected devices on one screen by tapping on „Devices“ in the Quick Panel of the Galaxy S21. Starting next week, SmartThings will also be available in Android Auto, so you can do things like turn off your kitchen lights from your car’s display as you pull out of the driveway.
For parents who want a productive tablet that can easily be shared with their kids, the new Lenovo Tab P11 comes with Kids Space, our new kids mode that features recommended apps, books and videos to help kids under 9 learn and have fun.
And to get help from your wrist, new Wear OS by Google smartwatches keep you connected wherever you are. For Android phone users in the U.S., you can send texts and make calls on Fossil’s Gen 5 LTE Touchscreen Smartwatch without your phone. And Michael Kors Access Gen 5E MKGO and Gen 5E Darci smartwatches are a fashionable option for keeping track of your health and wellness, staying in touch with friends and family and even making payments.

Hanging out at home
Google TV will be available on 2021 smart TVs from Sony and TCL. Google TV is a new entertainment experience that brings together movies, shows, live TV and more from across your apps and subscriptions and organizes them just for you. You can ask “Hey Google, find action movies” or “show me sci-fi adventure TV shows” and browse a wide selection of content with your voice. In fact your voice can be used in all sorts of ways: Your LG TV (from 2019 models) can now be controlled by a Google-enabled smart speaker in 15 countries and six languages. You will also soon be able to control your Verizon Fios set top box by voice when connected with a Google-enabled smart speaker or Smart Display. And to do more on your TV, you can stay connected with your loved ones with one-on-one or group video calls with the Duo app on Samsung TV (an optional USB-camera needed).
New connected lights from LIFX, Nanoleaf and Yeelight now work with Hey Google. These new devices support Seamless setup, which makes it possible to connect compatible smart home devices directly through the Google Home app and a Nest speaker or Smart Display without the need for an additional hub or bridge.
If you’re looking for an assist with cleaning up around the house, you can just say “Hey Google” to control the Smart MEDION’s vacuum cleaner MD 19601. To help more manufacturers bring voice capabilities like this to their smart home devices, we also recently launched the Authorized Solution Provider program. Throughout 2021, Viveport developers will receive more payouts. From January 1st to December 31st we are increasing net revenue share from 70/30 to 80/20 (developers receive 80%, Viveport receives 20%). That’s right! For the upcoming launch of its psychological horror title, The Medium, Bloober Team released a live-action trailer to give a glimpse of the mystery only a medium can solve.
Produced in cooperation with award-winning VFX and animation studio Platige Image, with the talented Paweł Maślona as director as well as Academy Award nominee and BAFTA-winning filmmaker Tomasz Bagiński serving as writer and creative producer, the trailer brings to life in stunning detail the game’s unique atmosphere and art style inspired by painter Zdzisław Beksiński.
The trailer also gives players a look into the key characters central to the game’s mystery, including Marianna, the titular medium, an enigmatic man named Thomas, a spirit called Sadness, and The Maw, a deceptive and hostile entity who can travel between the material and spirit world.
While the live-action trailer takes a thematic, atmospheric, and character-driven approach to The Medium, Bloober Team also recently released an extended 14-minute gameplay trailer that can be seen above in case you missed it. Players will be able to fully recognize and appreciate the many references and interesting details included as part of the live action trailer once they have the chance to play the game later this month.
The Medium is now available for pre-order and will launch January 28 for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, the Microsoft Store, and will also be available on day one with Xbox Game Pass.

Hello, everyone! We’ve been thrilled with the reception of last month’s launch of Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. The game has encouraged players to go head-to-head in competitive and casual matchups between friends and family to prove who is the ultimate puzzle master.
All the new content we’ll be discussing today will be available to players immediately after they download and install the new update. On that note, we’d like to provide a deeper look into one of the big features being added to the game today, in the first of a series of free content updates coming to Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 — the Boss Raid mode!
In the new Boss Raid mode, you and three of your friends will team up online in cooperative play to take down a common CPU-controlled foe, with each player having their own separate board to play on. Matches are completed using the same rules as Skill Battles, where you can use every character’s skills and your collection of Item Cards to gain the advantage.
Both casual and competitive players can jump into this mode at whichever skill level they prefer with the different difficulty options. Changing the difficulty will add more bosses you must fight in a row: on Medium, you’ll fight 1 boss; on Hot, 2 bosses; and on Spicy, 3 bosses! Higher difficulties will have different level requirements, so make sure your team has the strength to survive this challenging gauntlet.
During the Raid, players will have the opportunity for “Chance Time,” where they must meet or exceed a random condition (e.g., inflict X damage at once, survive for X seconds) to inflict major damage to the boss. Of course, bosses aren’t just going to sit around and take that damage — they’ll have a slew of unique skills to counteract these attacks, such as the Searchlight item from Party mode, which obscures player boards.
Players will earn Item Cards and experience points for completing Boss Raids which you can then use in Skill Battle mode. Better rewards will also be distributed for higher difficulty levels, so try your best to continue refining your skills!
But that’s not all. The eclectic character lineup in Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 is also getting a few more familiar faces — four new characters are being added with today’s free update!
First up is everyone’s favorite Blue Blur, Sonic the Hedgehog! Equipped with unmatched speed and a knack for justice, Sonic is joined by Lidelle, a shy student from Primp Magic School; Ms. Accord, a teacher from the same school whose lesson plans can be somewhat peculiar; and The Ocean Prince, a somewhat selfish royal creature who can transform into a human with the use of a certain spell.

Keep the Puyo-popping and Tetrimino-clearing party going this New Year with the launch of a free new update for Puyo Puyo Tetris 2, available starting today for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4!
This is the first in a series of updates for the game and includes an all-new online mode, along with the addition of the beloved Sega mascot, Sonic the Hedgehog, who knows a thing or two about fast reaction times. We should note first, all this new content will be available to players immediately after they download and install the new update.

Among the exciting content being made available today – including an amazing new online Boss Raid mode – we’re expanding the already-robust character roster even further with four new characters, including the blue blur himself, Sonic the Hedgehog!
Now we’d like to give you a brief rundown of each of these newly added characters. First up is a special guest from our flagship series who needs no introduction, Sonic the Hedgehog! The speedy blue hedgehog lives life by his own rules. He hates dishonesty and injustice, and he’s not afraid to fight for what’s right.
Sonic also plays a pivotal role during Skill Battle, such as his ability to change all Puyos on the board to blue!
Ms. Accord is a teacher of the Primp Magic School. Though gentle and kind, she’s known to prepare rather peculiar lesson plans. While she only played a minor role in the original Puyo Puyo Tetris, this update marks the first time Ms. Accord will appear as a playable character in a localized release since Puyo Pop Fever.
For Skill Battle, she can clear the board of Garbage Puyo, set up powerful chains, or throw up a strong defense against an enemy attack.
Next up is Lidelle, a student of Primp Magic School. Known to be mild-mannered and soft-spoken, Lidelle is also very shy and hides her horns by wrapping them with her hair. While sharing no relation, she considers Dark Prince and Draco as her big brother and sister.
Among her proficiencies in Skill Battle, Lidelle has a powerful ability where she can change a batch of Garbage Puyo on the board to a different color.
Finally, The Ocean Prince is, what else, the prince of the sea, a royal who can be pretty shellfish without realizing it. He sometimes takes a human form when he uses a particular spell. Like Ms. Accord and Lidelle, this will mark his first playable appearance since Puyo Pop Fever after making a cameo in Puyo Puyo Tetris. In Skill Battle, The Ocean Prince plays the role of a powerful support teammate, like being able to align any pieces to set up powerful chains or lower an enemy’s defense.
Aside from the new characters, this update also adds a co-operative Boss Raid mode, where up to four players battle together against a common foe using Skill Battle rules; four new BGM (background music) tracks; and 20 new player Avatars you can use to customize your player profile.

Acer announced updates to several gaming notebooks in its portfolio, including the Predator Triton 300 SE, Predator Helios 300, and Nitro 5 with new features and enhanced performance.
The new, slimmer generation of the Predator Triton 300 SE aims to appeal to on-the-go gamers. In addition to the latest 11th Gen Intel Core i7 H35-series processors, it also has an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Laptop GPU, with support for the latest DirectX 12 Ultimate gaming features. The Triton 300SE also features the latest 5th Gen AeroBlade Fan and Acer’s Vortex Flow technology to help keep temperatures in check under heavy gaming sessions. Whether playing the latest games or watching films, you’ll view it all on a 14-inch full high-definition (FHD) display that has a 144Hz refresh rate, surrounded by three thin bezels.
The Predator Helios 300 was refreshed to include the latest NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Laptop GPU to power the notebook’s 240Hz IPS display.
The Nitro 5 gaming notebook line got an upgrade with the addition of up to an AMD Ryzen 7 5000 H-Series Mobile Processor and up to an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Laptop GPU. The notebooks are available with 15.6-inch or 17.3-inch displays, featuring a quad high-definition (QHD) display with a 165 Hz refresh rate or a FHD display with up to a 360Hz refresh rate.

ASUS introduced the ROG Flow X13 and the ROG XG Mobile, offering gamers a portable and connected experience.
The ultra slim 13-inch ROG Flow X13 is the first 2-in-1 convertible ROG gaming laptop, with up to an 8-core AMD Ryzen 9 5980HS CPU and dedicated GeForce GTX 1650 GPU, which provides the power needed for demanding workloads and enables strong performance in the latest games. A 360-degree hinge allows users to quickly flip from laptop mode into positions for gaming, drawing, and presenting. A choice of two 16:10 display options provides either a 120Hz refresh rate or an Ultra HD 4K resolution with richer detail. Dell unveiled several incredibly thin laptops, the new Alienware m15 and m17 R4. And for those that prefer to play on desktops, they also announced the Alienware Aurora Ryzen Edition R10.

Hacking apart a sweet, innocent Raspberry Pi – who would do such a thing? Network Chuck, that’s who. But he has a very cool reason for it so, we’ll let him off the hook.
He’s figured out how to install VMware ESXi on Raspberry Pi, and he’s sharing the step-by-step process with you because he loves you. And us. We think. We hope.

Firstly, you need to make sure you’re running the latest version of Raspberry Pi OS. Chuck uses Raspberry Pi Imager to do this, and the video above shows you how to do the same.
Format your SD card

Then you’ll need to format your SD card ready for VMware ESXi. This can be done with Raspberry Pi Imager too. You’ll need to download these two things:

Then you’ll need to create the VMWare Installer to install the actual software. It’s at this point your USB flash drive takes centre stage. Here’s everything you’ll need:

Once that’s all done, stick your USB flash drive into your Raspberry Pi and get going. You need to be quick off the mark for this bit – there’s some urgent Escape key pressing required, but don’t worry, Chuck walks you through everything.

Once you’ve followed all those steps, you will be up, running, and ready to go. The installation process only takes up the first 15 minutes of Chuck’s project video, and he spends the rest of his time walking you through creating your first VM and adding more storage.

The 1980s gem inspired the affordable microcomputer we’ve come to know and love, so we adore how this project brings both together, using Raspberry Pi to enhance the BBC Micro by allowing another external CPU to be added.
This idea is not new. BBC Micro maker Acorn included a port called Tube for this very purpose and it released a range of second processors to expand a machine with limited RAM. But Acorn’s original set of second processors can be expensive and tricky to find, so PiTubeDirect recreates them on Raspberry Pi.
As such, BBC Micro enthusiasts can enhance their computers by adding a second 6502 or they can add external Z80, 32016 and ARM1 second processors – the latter used to develop the Archimedes range.
“The second processors would take responsibility for running the current language and the user’s programs, leaving the BBC Micro host responsible for the keyboard, screen, and file system,” says project originator David Banks. “The Tube architecture was unique and very innovative at the time.”
Timing it right
To enhance a BBC Micro in this way, users need a level-shifter HAT connected to Raspberry Pi’s GPIO interface which, in turn, is hooked to the BBC Micro’s Tube port using a 40-pin IDC cable. After installing the PiTubeDirect software to a microSD card, you simply plug and play.
Yet getting to this point has been a challenge. “We were brainstorming what it would take to connect Raspberry Pi Zero to the Tube port with the absolute minimal amount of hardware,” recalls David, who began tinkering with the BBC Micro again in 2013 after discovering people were preserving the computer and developing new hardware and software.
“The BBC Micro’s Tube interface is just an extension of the 6502 microprocessor bus and it uses 5V signal levels. Raspberry Pi uses more modern 3.3V signal levels, so the minimum hardware is just a couple of off-the-shelf level-shifter chips.
“But such a solution is only feasible if Raspberry Pi, in software, can do everything else, including responding to Tube requests in real time.” Achieving that was tricky.
To the bare metal
The wizardry used to interface the BBC Micro to a second processor was originally encapsulated in the Tube ULA custom chip. “Every second processor that Acorn produced contained one, providing a set of four bidirectional FIFOs that allow the ‘host’ and ‘parasite’ processors to communicate via a series of well defined messages, called the Tube Protocol,” explains David.
Emulating this entailed using software running on Raspberry Pi and it needed to meet the hard real-time constraints of the 2MHz Tube interface.
“We knew running a conventional operating system like Raspberry Pi OS would not yield the required guaranteed response time,” David says. “So, we dispensed with the operating system and engaged in ‚Bare Metal‘ programming, developing software by directly accessing the hardware of Raspberry Pi Zero.”
To further resolve time-related problems, Dominic Plunkett joined the team and suggested moving the Tube ULA emulation code on to the GPU. Dominic also optimised the emulation speed of the 6502 to 292MHz, thus making it 150 times the speed of the original 2MHz BBC Micro.
One thing’s for sure, it’s been an education. “One of the more satisfying aspects of developing PiTubeDirect has been learning about programming at the lowest bare metal level,” notes David. “And that’s very much in the same manner that we would really get to know machines back in the 1980s.”
2020 has drawn to a close, which means it’s time to take a look at the year’s most downloaded games at PlayStation Store.

Call of Duty also led the US/Canada PS4 charts, though the worldwide appeal of FIFA 20 and FIFA 21 made them top hits across Europe.

Like Ramona skating into Scott’s life, PlayStation fans fell hard for Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game when it hit PS3 in 2010. To develop the lovingly retro-inspired adaptation of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s story, Ubisoft partnered with talented creators like pixel artist Paul Robertson and chiptune pop / rock band Anamanaguchi. The art and sound gelled magically with the co-op beat ‘em up gameplay — an instant classic was born.
A decade later, Ubisoft is rereleasing the nostalgic side-scrolling adventure. To mark the occasion, we conducted a Q&A interview with Anamanaguchi. The band reflects on the critical reception of the game, the evolution of their music since 2010, favorite characters, and more.
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game – Complete Edition contains the original adventure, plus playable DLC characters Knives Chau and Wallace Wells. It launches on PS4 January 14, and is playable on PS5 via backwards compatibility.
PlayStation.Blog: When you see or hear the name “Scott Pilgrim” these days, what is the first thought or emotion that comes to your mind?
Peter Berkman: That the game is finally being re-released!
Luke Silas: When I hear “Scott Pilgrim,” I remember the funny little tattoo of Scott in a tanuki suit that I got after we finished the soundtrack in 2010.
PSB: Which playable character is the favorite of each Anamanaguchi member, and why?
PB: I didn’t get a chance to play the game after the DLC came out, so I’m gonna play as Wallace when I can.
Ary Warnaar: I’m really bad at this kinda game, so I’d honestly rather watch the rest of the band play… but Kim Pine.
James DeVito: I gotta stick with the bass brother, Scott Pilgrim.
LS: I play heavies, so I go with Ramona and do lots of big hammer hits.
PSB: What track from Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game do you feel best represents Anamanaguchi’s sound in 2010?
PB: Probably the theme song – we wound up releasing a lot of singles that summer – one of them was another song in the running for that!
AW: I remember being super into “Rox 300” back then ~as a sound for us~.
LS: I think either “Another Winter” or “Just Like In The Movies,” those were both as nuanced and punky as our non-OST material back then! We’ve expanded a lot, but at that point I think most people considered us pretty splashy and fun like those levels.
The track “Subspace Highway” plays as Scott navigates a reality-bending path.
PSB: What track from Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game do you feel best represents Anamanaguchi’s sound in 2021?
PB: The “Subspace Highway” sound design sounds like it’d fit nicely on our latest album, [USA].
AW: I really like the chord progression in “Vegetable Rock.” Kinda grunge-y. I’ve been looping it and playing it back at half-speed recently.
LS: “Leave The Past Behind!” It’s dynamic and bittersweet, and has a lot of different energies in one song. Feels like something we might work on today.
PSB: The track “Another Winter” perfectly captures the Scott Pilgrim world’s vibe of fun and melancholy. As players listen, what is happening on a musical level to evoke those feelings?
PB: I personally love the tension of 7th chords and 9th chords – stacks of complicated feelings – and it’s all over a lot of our music. In that song there’s some cute little call and response that breaks to a long yearning kind of melody. I had just had my wisdom tooth taken out, haha. In that song everything’s really held together by the drive of the drums. Revisiting a lot of these songs it’s funny how the tracks in major keys feel a bit melancholy and the ones in minor keys feel a bit energetic.

PSB: Why do you think Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game achieved such adoration from players that has persisted over the years?
PB: I think so much of it comes from the feeling Bryan (Lee O’Malley) was able to tap into with his comics. As for the game itself, it’s really for people who love games. The art is really sick. Everybody involved really wanted it to be good so they put a lot of care and little unexpected details into it. ‘They didn’t need to go so hard’ goes all around there. It’s a kind of “love letter” to having friends over and playing beat ‘em ups on the couch with some snacks.
AW: On top of that, I think the art is a big part of the longstanding appreciation of the game. It’s definitely aged well. Paul Robertson really brought out the best of this style of pixel art, without ever being stuck in the “retro” world.
PB: True! Kinuko (Mariel Kinuko Cartwright, artist) and Persona (Jonathan Kim, artist) brought so much of that animation to life, too.
PSB: Did you have to adapt or adjust your general musical sound to suit the world of Scott Pilgrim, or was your signature sound of the 2010 timeframe already a perfect fit?
PB: Our style was a natural fit for the general vibe, but it was a lot of fun to flex and adapt for certain moments that a ‘band playing shows’ doesn’t normally get to do. Like a bossa nova shop theme, or boss songs.
AW: There were a handful of prompts that took us out of our comfort zones. Some of those styles were definitely just for the game, but others started to shape sounds that became a bit more normal to us. Dance-tempo four to the floor tracks were a pretty new thing to us back then!
PSB: Looking back, which track from Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game is your favorite?
PB: Level 4’s train music (“Suburban Tram”) always makes me really happy!
JD: “Just Like in the Movies” is a really fun one to play and also makes me happy.
AW: There’s a super short interlude, called “Kiss 2” as far as I know, that I think is still very pretty.
LS: There’s a full version of “This Is The End,” the “perfect ending” music, that hasn’t been released before; not to be a tease, but for me it’s gotta be that. Maybe everyone will get to hear it more readily someday soon.
