  • iOS Core Ported To Nokia N900, Opens Door To iOS Running On Non-Apple Hardware

iOS Core Ported To Nokia N900, Opens Door To iOS Running On Non-Apple Hardware

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

Well known developer Winocm has managed to achieve “one of the core milestones” pertaining to a project he has been working on for quite some time. Those who follow the activity of the developer on his Twitter feed will more than likely know about the project he has been working on for quite some time. With a little help from Steven Troughton-Smith, Winocm has managed to port the core elements of Apple’s iOS operating system onto non-Apple hardware.

The benefits of this port aren’t immediately known to the majority of iOS users, but it does represent a significant technical achievement. The “proof” of port images have been provided courtesy of Troughton-Smith and show the core port of iOS successfully booting and running on a Nokia N900 smartphone from 2009. That particular hardware was originally shipped by the Finnish company running the Maemo 5 operating system. In addition to the N900 success, the developer has also stated that his port will successfully boot on various other hardware pieces.

It is extremely exciting news to know that this port is possible and effectively opens the door for others to look at the open-source implementation and build on it where necessary. In its current form however, it does appear to be for the purists and those who are extremely technically biased. There is currently no GUI support for this implementation – nor is there any planned in the immediate future – with the focus being on getting the XNU Kernel to boot on hardware other than the official Apple supplied kit.

    xnu-n900

As previously mentioned, the port will also play nicely with hardware other than the Nokia N900. For those interested, Winocm has detailed a number of hardware setups that are capable of booting his work, including the Texas Instruments AM335x (BeagleBone/BeagleBone Black) (OMAP335X) and ARM RealView Platform Baseboard for Cortex-A8 (ARMPBA8). The XNU Kernel is essentially the “core” of iOS (and OS X for that matter) and was built by Apple over a decade ago to form the foundations of their two operating systems.

At the time of writing, there wasn’t any great details on the future of this particular project. All of the work has been open-sourced and added to a repository on GitHub, meaning that developers all over the world can contribute their own offerings to the project going forward.

Unlike other smartphones, the Plumage has a keypad unlike any that you’ve seen before…it’s a fold-down variety.

When not in use, the keypad folds back up and doubles as a smart cover for protecting the device’s screen. One caveat: it reduces the screen size.

  • Microsoft mocks Apple’s iPhone 5c & 5s in a series of video ads

Microsoft mocks Apple’s iPhone 5c & 5s in a series of video ads

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

They called the video series ‚A fly on the wall in Cupertino‘, and poked fun at Apple’s design process for the iPhone 5s and 5c, showing satirical Apple product review meetings where two „employees“ attempt to pitch various features of the new phones to actors intended to resemble Apple CEO Tim Cook and Senior Vice President of Design Jony Ive…

Their list of pretentious colours, including ‚vermillion‘, ‚chartreuse‘, and ‚robins egg‘, is a dig at the new range of multi-coloured iPhones – and Apple’s notoriously ‚trendy‘ image.

Colours aside, they took aim at every element of the controversial new design, including the fingerprint reader and megapixel camera.

At one point, the actress hands a piece of A4 paper to ‚T‘ (Tim Cook): ‚Feel how light that is. You know how we did that? Megapixels – got them down to eight.‘

Picking apart Mr Cook’s speech at the launch on Wednesday, the actors make fun of phrases such as ‚the gold standard‘ and ‚unapologetically plastic‘.

    […]

One video went viral before Microsoft managed to delete it.

It opens with one of the colour-coordinated ‚ideas people‘ poking fun at the iWatch, which is still yet to hit the market after numerous mentions.

The actor says: ‚Sorry we’re late. My iWatch had to go back to R&D [research and development].‘

He proceeds to suggest random colours, with a flourish of his wrist, for the CEO to think about – while his colleague ‚translates‘ them into layman’s terms:

‚Vermillion, do you feel me?‘ ‚Pink.‘

    ‚Chartreuse‘ ‚Green.‘

    ‚Robin’s egg blue‘ ‚Blue.‘

The actress also translates ‚yeah bro‘ to ‚yes‘, and ’nah brah‘ to ’no‘.

He continues to mock how the model falls short of its description: ‚You asked us to make the gold standard of iPhone. It turns out that is super hard.

‚We made you an iPhone which is the colour gold‘.

The videos end showing a ‚#timetoswtich‘ hashtag.

So yes, Microsoft has since pulled off the videos from YouTube, releasing the following statement:

„The video was intended to be a light-hearted poke at our friends from Cupertino. But it was off the mark, and we’ve decided to pull it down.“
