We tried asking the StinkyCheese emote for 24/7 tech and business news, but it just smiled at us. This led us to a new form of cheese. It’s tasty on burgers and even better with chat. Welcome Cheddar’s 24/7 tech and business coverage to the Always On lineup.
Cheddar’s new Twitch channel launched today with live, interactive coverage from the floor of the Consumer Electronics Show. Each morning from 6 AM to 9 AM PT, you’ll see reports on the products and technologies that matter most and interviews with the people behind them. The morning content will be repeated throughout the day, so if you were too busy trying to perfect your copypasta technique to pay attention, you can always catch up on anything you missed.
The cavalry’s here! We’re excited to announce we’ve teamed up with Blizzard to bring everysingle Overwatch League match to Twitch.
That’s right; for the next two years, encompassing seasons one and two, Twitch will be the only place to watch regular-season, playoff, and championship Overwatch League matches — aside from Blizzard’s own site — with streams available in English, Korean, and French.*
When does it all begin? Tomorrow! When the first season kicks off with the San Francisco Shock taking on the Los Angeles Valiant, tune in on Twitch at 4:00pm PST and catch every moment live on twitch.tv/overwatchleague. You can view the full match schedule for the season right here.
We’re also working with Blizzard to develop new rewards for Overwatch fans, including exclusive in-game items. These, plus custom Overwatch League Cheermotes, will be announced when they’re available.
*Twitch’s exclusivity deal with Overwatch League does not include China.
Did you know less than 13,000 PlayStation 4 20th Anniversary Edition consoles exist in the world? Do you want one? If so, read on, and we’ll show you how you might win one while raising money for a great cause.
We’re teaming up again with Sony Foundation Australia and Sony Interactive Entertainment Australia for Gaming4Life 2018 to give you a chance to win one of the fabled consoles along with scores of other PlayStation and Sony hardware. Raising funds on stream and donating to Sony Foundation Australia’s Youth Cancer Program, You Can, will raise your chances of winning!
You Can was founded in 2010 by Sony Foundation Australia to build specialized youth cancer centers for patients aged 15–25 to address low survival rates from lack of age-appropriate care. Since then, You Can has opened centers in Melbourne and Perth where young people undergo treatment with peers, attend counseling sessions, and, of course, bond over video games! Your fundraising efforts in Gaming4Life 2018 will go toward opening centers in Sydney and Brisbane.
Gaming4Life 2018 kicks off on January 14 @ 2 pm PST / January 15 @ 9 am AEST and ends February 18 @ 2 pm PST / February 19 @ 9 am AEST. Every streamer that reaches these fundraising milestones is eligible to win the following prizes:
$50 — limited edition Gaming4Life 2018 t-shirt
$500 — limited edition Gaming4Life 2018 mug, plus a chance to win a PlayStation DualShock 4 Controller, PlayStation Game Pack, PlayStation PlayLink games pack, or Sony Extra Bass Headphones
$1,000 — Gaming4Life 2018 hoodie, plus a chance to win a Sony Extra Bass Portable Speaker
$2,000 — Gaming4Life 2018 limited edition socks, plus a chance to win a Limited Edition STAR WARS Battlefront II PlayStation 4 Pro console, PlayStation 4 Pro 1TB console, PlayStation 4 500GB console, PlayStation VR & PlayStation camera, Sony Digital Walkman, or Sony Selfie Camera with 30x optical zoom
$10,000 — the four highest fundraisers over $10,000 get a PlayStation 4 20th Anniversary Edition console!
Did you know you get chances to win by donating too? For every $10 you donate, you are given one entry into a draw to win one of the PlayStation 4 20th Anniversary Edition! The drawing happens on February 20 @ 2 pm PST / February 21 @ 9 am AEST. A $50 donation also guarantees you a limited edition Gaming4Life 2018 t-shirt (5 entries to win that PS4 plus a t-shirt is kind of a no-brainer if you ask me).
There is just so much up for grabs! Here is how to get your hands on some great prizes:
Sign up via Tiltify and click “Start Fundraising” to set up your own fundraising campaign.
From now until February 18 @ 2 pm PST / February 19 @ 9 am AEST, simply stream on your Twitch channel and do whatever you can to raise the highest funds for Sony Foundation Australia’s You Can.
After the contest closes, you will be contacted via email to find out what you won!
You know what you have to do! Start fundraising and douse that stinging PJSalt on cancer!
Late last year we committed to publishing and updating a public roadmap for our developer platform and now we’ll be adding on to that effort with an RFC (Request for Comments) process for our major roadmap items. We truly believe that the best products are made hand in hand with customers and RFCs are how we’re going to do that.
RFCs are a way to gather feedback from our developer community about our proposed technical strategies for potential updates — before we dive head first into implementation. The community will be given the opportunity to read and comment on everything related to upcoming projects ranging from our motivation for choosing the project at all to specifics of the API we’re designing.
How it Works
Before we start development on a feature, we will post a new topic on the developer forums in the RFC category. These are open for anyone to read and comment on and we encourage you to voice any and all thoughts or concerns you have in the RFC. We will leave these open for a minimum two weeks with the goal of reading and addressing all feedback before closing an RFC. When an RFC is closed, we will post a final revised version that incorporates any final changes due to feedback to serve as the plan of record.
We’ve taken inspiration from a number of open source communities including Ember and Rust for our initial RFC strategy and our RFCs will start by including, at a minimum, the following information about the proposal:
A summary of the proposal
Motivation for making the change
Detailed design (including wireframes or mocks when applicable)
Rollout/upgrade path considerations
Drawbacks of the proposed strategy
Alternatives we thought of but opted to not do
At this time, RFCs will be posted only for Extensions features, but we may expand this in the future. Within Extensions, however, we will post an RFC for any non-trivial change to any API or developer workflow.
We Want Your Feedback
We’re kicking off this process for a feature we hope to work on early this year: Dynamic Anchors. Take a look and leave us some feedback.
Early in 2018, we will post our plans for how to tackle Multiple Video Extensions, Mobile Extensions, and more. Make sure to watch the RFCs space on the forums for new posts.
Lastly, we’d love to hear your feedback on the overall process (yes, this is a request for feedback on how we request feedback). Drop us some comments on the forums with any thoughts you have. It’s important to us that you are represented in our development process so there’s anything we can be doing better we’d love to hear about it.
This week’s Twitch Prime Legend is one of the tightest tight ends to ever do it: Shannon Sharpe, with an 83 OVR!
As a 3x time champ with the Broncos and Ravens, Shannon was Lord of the Super Bowl Rings. Running over defenders like they were hobbits and catching his precious touchdowns. Sharpe was selected to the All-Pro Team 4 times, made eight Pro Bowls and gained over 1,000 receiving yards in three different seasons. If you’ve ever seen his massive arms you’d see why he was so unstoppable. Dude had a rockin’ bod.
Sharpe is now a host of FS1’s debate show Skip and Shannon: Undisputed. Butthere’s definitely no disputing the fact that he had an epic NFL career.

Get ready to tell some tall tales, because this week’s Twitch Prime Legend is Philadelphia Eagles WR Harold Carmichael, with an 83 OVR!
At 6 foot 8 inches, Carmichael is the tallest wide receiver in the history of the NFL. He was basically Shaquille O’Neal in football pads, catching alley-oop passes and dunking on DB’s in the end zone. From ’71-’83 he had 590 receptions, 8,985 yards, and 79 TD’s. He was a 4x Pro Bowler, named to the NFL 1970s All Decade team, and is an Eagles Hall of Fame inductee. Can you imagine trying to guard him as a 5’10 corner? You’d get altitude sickness trying to jump that high.
After retirement, Carmichael was named the director of player and community relations for the Eagles, and was a Fan Engagement Liaison from 2014–2015. Which was awesome for fans, as long as they didn’t get stuck sitting behind him at games.

…and all through their streams, casters were visualizing a “#1 WINNER” in their dreams.
Twitch is ready to play Santa and check those dreams off their wishlists, so this weekend on December 24, 2017 from 2 until 5 pm PT, over 50 streamers will play rounds of friendly Fortnite Battle Royale matches on a private server to celebrate the holiday season!
Each streamer will broadcasting their perspectives live and you can find the list of participants with links to their channels below, with the list being updated as the final participants confirm.
Last week the NBA G League arrived on Twitch with an interactive experience that you can’t get anywhere else. Now, you can be a part of the show and take things to the next level.
Starting today at 7pm PT you can watch and co-stream any NBA G League game streamed on Twitch on your own channel. So bring your hot takes, play-by-play, stat breakdowns, and fan rants because it’s your chance to put your unique spin on the broadcasts. Need a little inspiration? Here’s a highlight from week one.
Now, for the details. One does not simply walk into co-streaming the G League. Here’s how to get started:
First, get your broadcasting software set up.
Set your favorite broadcast software to capture the stream live on twitch.tv/nbagleaguecostreams. This channel has a clean feed without commentary. For more help using your specific software click here.
Set your ‘game’ to NBA G League.
Use the hashtag #NBAGLeagueOnTwitch to spread the word about your co-stream.
Then, for the full NBA G League on Twitch experience, install the NBA G League Extension (seriously, it’s awesome).
On the left side of your dashboard, install the NBA G League Extension in the Extensions Manager.
After it’s installed, make sure to enable the extension. For help, you can see How to Use Extensions.
Select the game you’ll be co-streaming in your live dashboard.
Time to slap on some face paint, because this week’s Twitch Prime Legend in Madden Ultimate Team is none other than wild boy John Randle, with an 83 OVR!
Randle painted his face like Mel Gibson from Braveheart before games and talked trash about his opponent’s moms, wives, kids, pet hamsters, socks, you name it. One time an opposing QB had to call a timeout because he was so flustered. Dude was a world-class smack talker. And his game backed it up.
As DT for the Minnesota Vikings (1990–2000) and Seattle Seahawks (2001–2003), Randle was a 7× Pro Bowler, 6× All-Pro Player, NFL sacks leader (1997), and was named to the 1990s All-Decade Team. All that from a player who went undrafted. Whaddup now haters?!
So do yourself a favor and add John Randle to your team. He’ll give you a reason to talk some trash.

Hello! I’m John from Digital Tree Media and I’m here to share some thoughts and ideas around a Twitch Extension I made for controlling our Christmas lights. Yes, I know. Great idea, let Twitch control your lights. At Digital Tree Media we have a history of taking technologies and combining them to create an experience that other people would have said was “too hard,” “impossible,” or “a really dumb idea” (OK, that last one was just our staff when I said people could control our lights).
Control The Show (CTS) has been a hobby project of mine for a few years. The original incarnation involved my old streaming setup in my bedroom at my parents’ house. Each time I have re-made the system, I have used it as an opportunity to learn new technologies, systems, and ways of working. CTS 1.0 was the reason I learned PHP back in 2011/2012.
The Control The Show experience back in 2012.
This year I decided that rather than rely on our own site and have people click on buttons, we’d have it within the video player on Twitch. In the past, we have built our own versions of interactive overlays (pre-Twitch Extensions), which we achieved by having the Twitch JavaScript player with an iFrame overlay then another container with the Twitch Player elements (play controls, volume, and fullscreen). There is one big issue with this –®define people who casually find the stream via the Twitch website would have to click away from it to control the lights. Adding one extra step usually means far fewer people will actually interact. Internally, we’ve been playing around with ideas for a Twitch Extension, and the whole concept of CTS felt like a really good fit. With that, I started building it first thing on a Sunday.
By lunchtime I had the main part of the extension working. Users could click on one of the buttons to send the command to the server, which then sent it to the plugs to turn lights off or on. After a “healthy” lunch, I started work on what I thought would make the whole experience more entertaining. By mid-afternoon, I had user-based stats working, allowing me to pull data for a leaderboard, along with assigning a person a team, based on whether they had turned more things off or on.
How does the whole system work then? Good question! As I mentioned earlier, CTS has been re-written multiple times, and this year was no exception. I had originally written the system to work on the website so I already had the code I needed to control the plugs, along with some of the security code. To add Twitch Extension compatibility, I needed to build an Extension Backend Service (EBS) and a frontend for it. The frontend was reasonably simple. A quick mashup of an image map, some javascript to scale it to the correct size, and an implementation to send the Twitch Auth token (provided as a JWT which I had never heard of), along with the request to the EBS and I was done. Then I just had to build an EBS. This part took me the longest, mainly due to my lack of knowledge on JWTs. Turns out they are an awesome little thing! My first issue with them as a n00b was selecting a library. I used my favourite bodge language of choice for CTS — PHP — which meant I had a choice of 7 different implementations. Now I did what every developer would do — I looked at which one had more stars on GitHub. Sweet. JWT = Done. I then modified the control system to accept the incoming data from the extension and log stats using the user’s identifier. I logged all the requests using the Opaque ID (as every user has one), but to appear on the leaderboard, a user has to allow me to see their actual Twitch ID.
Great, the EBS is done, now we need to do everything else. Integrating it all together was quite easy. The total creation time of the extension was around 3–4 hours of actual work spread over my Sunday. I left the office after testing the extension out and submitting it.
The next day, I received a reply about my submission explaining it had been denied. This was due to the lack of a config.html page for the broadcaster side and was a simple item to fix and resubmit. The extension then passed review and was available on Tuesday. Here’s what the engagement looked like for that first evening:
Engagement for Control the Show’s debut using a Twitch Extension.
We peaked at 221,430 commands in an hour, which is a lot of clicking! It was rather funny walking back into the office late that night and hearing all the relays clicking on and off.
Now looking to the future, there’s a lot that I want to do with it. I’ve already started re-writing the project (again) to make better use of modern web technologies. Next year CTS will be using websockets for real-time communications, allowing the status of the devices to be shown in the Extension, along with achievements that will be shown to you as you earn them. My current plan is to bring CTS back for Halloween and Christmas each year with the actual display getting bigger and bigger.
I currently have an LED ticker that is going to be implemented to show the latest Subscribers and Cheerers along with some LED pixel mapping effects that will be included in future shows so cheering and subscribing will be even cooler! This has always been a hobby project for me and I welcome feedback from people. If you have any 240v inflatables that you’d like to send my way, feel free to let me know!
If you’re thinking of making a Twitch Extension, do it! It’s a hell of a lot of fun. I managed to make something simple that I can build on over the next year. It’s been a great learning experience from a little idea of “that would be cool” to something I now get to write about!
In SteamWorld Heist you command a steam-driven pirate crew in a series of epic tactical shootouts. It’s turn-based strategy with a twist: You manually aim the guns of your robots, allowing for insane skill shots and bullet-bouncing action! Extensions provide an opportunity for developers and streamers to revolutionize live streaming together. These interactive experiences can be tailored to the specific needs of a stream and allow two-way communication between the streamer, the viewers, and even a game being played. To help developers and streamers collaborate, last month we created a forum category to submit and vote on ideas, and we would love for you to be a part of those conversations as well.
This month, we wanted to highlight a few Extensions (and their authors) that have been recently added to the Extensions Manager. We’ve chosen these to demonstrate a variety of use cases that Extensions can solve and the value they provide to streamers. You can try these Extensions on your own channel page by going to the detail pages linked below and clicking the “+ Install” button at the top right of each page.
Game Stat
An overlay Extension by CiberusPS, Game Stat is an Extension that shows game statistics, recent matches, and match details for DOTA 2.
TT
Written by sock_stream, the TT Extension is a timer video overlay with support for history and splits. The overlay is currently controlled from the browser, but the plan is to eventually integrate with existing timer tools. User guide: https://tt.stephank.nl/
Event Countdown

Today, we’re excited to announce “Stream On,” a new game show from Twitch Studios! Premiering in March 2018, the program will elevate some of the best and brightest up-and-coming streamers. Starting today, Twitch Partners are invited to audition for participation.
Maybe you’ve been streaming a long time and are looking for that one last push to take you into a full-time streaming career, or maybe you feel like you’re just getting started, and need a boost to reach more people and show them your skills! Either way, Stream On might be just the opportunity you need to shine. Right now, Twitch Studios is looking for the most entertaining, competitive streamers, with great personality and lots of potential. Video audition submissions are open now on the Twitch submission page, and full contest rules can be found here.
Stream On contestants will face challenges designed to test important streamer skills, and be evaluated by a panel of Twitch judges. Viewers in Twitch chat will also play an important role in choosing who advances and who is eliminated at each stage of the friendly competition. The show will take place across multiple channels as contestants compete throughout each week from their home streaming setup, and the action will be punctuated by a weekly recap and elimination show from Twitch Studios.
Ultimately, the contestant who best shows off their ability to entertain, lead a community, and be a pacesetter in the streaming space will emerge victorious, and be awarded a grand prize of $5,000 per month for a year — a total of $60,000 — in order to help take their streaming career to the next level.
As a contestant, viewer, or Twitch community member, we hope you’ll stay tuned and take part in this pilot season of Twitch Studios newest effort to elevate streamers. Be sure to follow /Twitch and @Twitch_Studios on Twitter for updates!
Would I need to move or appear in person in order to compete?
No! We may ask contestants to join us for a trip or two, but the competition takes place online, and every streamer competes from their own streaming setup.
How will this affect my normal streaming schedule?
The competition is built to complement and expand, not replace, your current streaming strategy. However, streamers should keep in mind that participation may require changes and efforts that may conflict with their usual schedule or style, and be willing to invest with flexibility in the competition.
If I’m not a Partner quite yet, should I still audition?
This competition is catered toward streamers who are right on the cusp of making streaming full-time a possibility. Streamers who are below the threshold of partnership might not benefit much from participating, and would be at a disadvantage in challenges. We hope all interested streamers will use Achievements to follow the path to partnership and be able to join us for any future partner opportunities like Stream On! In the meantime, also be sure to check out other opportunities available from Twitch Studios at link.twitch.tv/submit.
I’m a big Partner who streams full time, should I audition?
As above, Stream On is built to support streamers who are just on the brink of making their streaming a full time career. Any partner can audition, but be advised that the selection committee will be more likely to choose smaller partners who they feel can benefit most from the additional exposure that Stream On can offer. LIRIK, if you’re reading this, please don’t apply.
I see on the submission form that only entrants from the U.S., Canada, and the U.K. can enter. Why?
Stream On is a pilot, and we want to make sure we can truly support everyone we invite to audition. As it relates to budget, translation, logistics, and more, unfortunately this is the widest range of regions we can support for this time around.
This holiday season, do good in the world while having fun and supporting streamers with Bits! From Dec 18–29, every time you Cheer with the hashtag #charity, Twitch will donate $2 to Direct Relief for every 1000 Bits Cheered. Every Bit Cheered using the hashtag counts toward the total. The streamer still gets the same support from the Bits; Twitch is donating to the charity based on your Cheers. This year our #charity drive supports Direct Relief, which provides critical medicines and supplies to communities in need and in response to disasters.
About Direct Relief
Direct Relief is a humanitarian aid organization, active in all 50 U.S. states and over 80 countries, with a mission to improve the health and lives of people affected by poverty or emergencies. Direct Relief ships essential medicines and medical supplies to healthcare organizations on an ongoing basis, but is also able to dial up the mobilization of these critical resources during times of disaster. Recognized by Charity Navigator as a four-star charity, the organization has been active in responding to Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria, as well as the recent earthquakes in Mexico and wildfires in Northern and Southern California
Please join us in showing support for this great organization and the vital work they do by adding #charity every time you Cheer!
FAQ
Q. Do small amounts of Bits count?
Yes! All Bits with the #charity hashtag will be counted towards the total.
Q. Do Cheermotes count? Can I use Kappa1000, Kreygasm5000, Swiftrage10000, or any Partner Custom Cheermote, and add #charity?
Yes! All Bits, including any Cheermote, with the #charity hashtag will be counted towards the total.
Q. Does this take away from what the streamer receives from the Cheer?
No! The streamer whose channel you’re Cheering in still gets the same share of the Bits as they normally do. Twitch is making the donation based on the number of Bits you use with the hashtag.

Just when your DB’s thought it was safe… MARVIN HARRISON IS BACK as this week’s Twitch Prime Legend in Madden Ultimate Team, with an 83 OVR!
Widely considered as one of the filthiest wide receivers in NFL history, Harrison won a Super Bowl, went to the Pro Bowl 8 times, had 8 straight years with 1,000+ yards and shattered the NFL single-season record for receptions (143) in 2002. As Peyton Manning’s #1 target, he tore through the NFL with reckless abandoned and left a trail of DB’s and records in his wake.
Scientists are still puzzled by his inability to drop a ball. Some speculate that he’s an alien. Others say a robot. In any case, plug Marvin Harrison into your line up and you’re going to score So. Many. Touchdowns.
About Twitch Prime Legends

Bust out those ugly sweaters, celebrate the holidays, and spread joy on Twitch by Cheering to support streamers. Cheering already has plenty of benefits on Twitch, like celebrating special moments with streamers, amplifying your voice in chat, and earning Bit badges, but from now through December 26th, Cheering will do even more. Let’s break it down.
If you Cheer 1 to 249 Bits to support streamers during this time, you’ll also receive a Holiday Gift containing a full set of seven seasonal emotes.
If your favorite streamer is on the Nice list and you Cheer 250 Bits or more, you’ll instead receive a Gold Holiday Gift containing a different complete set of seven seasonal emotes and share a special gift for a number of the other viewers in chat: one of the holiday emotes!
We also have a brand new Holiday Cheermote that’s perfect to use this holiday season.
Once you receive the holiday emotes, you’ll find them in the emote selector for Chat, Pulse, Feeds, and Whispers so you can truly spread joy all across Twitch.
If you need to fill your gift-giving hands with Bits, load up here.
Questions? We’ve got answers.
Q: When exactly is this happening?
Starting now and ending 12PM PDT on December 26.
Q: Do streamers still receive the same revenue share from Twitch for the Cheer/Bits?
Yes.
Q: How long can I use the seasonal holiday emotes?
Until the end of January 2018.
Q: What exactly is in the Holiday Gifts?
All regular Holiday Gifts contain all seven of the first set of seasonal holiday emotes. Similarly, all Gold Holiday Gifts contain all seven emotes of the second set.
Q: Are the emotes I receive randomly selected?
No, all regular Holiday Gifts contain the same first set of seven seasonal holiday emotes and all Gold Holiday Gifts contain the same second set of seven.
Q: How are the holiday emotes awarded?
Cheer between 1–249 Bits and you will receive a regular Holiday Gift containing the first seven seasonal holiday emotes.
Cheer 250 Bits or more and you’ll receive a Gold Holiday Gift, containing another set of seven seasonal holiday emotes. You’ll also activate a gift for a number of other viewers in chat who will receive one of the 14 emotes.
Q: Can I Cheer 125 Bits now and 125 Bits later and receive a Gold Holiday Gift?
No, you have to cheer with at least 250 Bits in one single Cheer to be able to receive a Gold Holiday Gift. If you did the above, you’ll receive a regular Holiday Gift for the first Cheer only. You won’t receive another regular Holiday Gift for the second Cheer but it will still support the streamer and contribute towards Bit Badges as normal.
Q: If I Cheer with 500, 1000, 1500, 2000, etc. Bits in a single Cheer, do I receive multiple Gold Holiday Gifts?
You’ll receive one Gold Holiday Gift for the single Cheer which contains all seven of the second set of holiday emotes.
Q: If I Cheer 250 Bits and receive a Gold Holiday Gift and then later on Cheer another 250 Bits, will I receive a second Gold Holiday Gift containing duplicate emotes?
You only receive the Gold Holiday Gift containing the seven seasonal holiday emotes for the first Cheer. You won’t receive another Gold Holiday Gift for the second Cheer but it will still support the streamer and contribute towards Bit Badges as normal.
Q: I received one of the holiday emotes from another person’s Cheer and afterwards received a duplicate holiday emote from one of the Holiday Gifts, did something go wrong?
This is expected since the holiday emote you received is from the pool of 14 holiday emotes of which the Holiday Gifts are guaranteed to have their respective seven emotes.
Q: Where do I find my Holiday Gifts if I don’t open them right away?
