Introducing Echo – An Evolutionary Robot with Rapidly Adapting Artificial Intelligence

During her time at Overwatch, Dr. Mina Liao, a founding member of Overwatch and former Omnica Corporation employee, created the Echo project: a multirole, adaptive robot that could be programmed to learn different functions – anything from medical support to construction. During its development, Echo was programmed with a powerful, general artificial intelligence that learned by observation, but it was limited in its independent decision-making abilities.

Overwatch, weary from the Omnic attack on humanity, restricted the Echo project’s full abilities and limited its use to test missions, although it performed successfully there. That was until Dr. Liao perished in an attack on Overwatch and it was decided to cease further development on Echo and place the project in quarantine.

However, when Overwatch needed her most, Echo was finally recruited to the battlefield to defend Paris against a Null Sector incursion. Proving herself as a commendable asset on the battlefield, Overwatch decided to bring Echo on as a permanent member. Though without Dr. Liao’s guidance, no one knows how she may evolve in the future…

Regardless of Echo’s tumultuous backstory, she proves to be a unique and exciting addition to the game.

Echo’s Gameplay

So, what’s the lowdown on Echo’s gameplay? Here’s what you need to know:

As a damage hero Echo is not only useful on the front lines, but is versatile across the board.

Echo’s offensive abilities include the Tri-Shot, allowing her to fire three projectiles at once, and Sticky Bombs, a tactical item which fires a volley of bombs that detonate after a short delay.

Wielding a deadly Focusing Beam which stays active for a few seconds, Echo deals high damage to enemies with 50% health or less. Fun fact: the Focusing Beam also cuts through enemy barriers that have 50% or more damage accumulated.

Another unique feature-set Echo offers are her Flight and Glide abilities. While using Flight, Echo surges forward quickly and can then fly freely in any direction. Echo’s Glide ability gives players extra time to decide where to land their next hit while falling mid-air.

As for Echo’s Ultimate ability? Duplicate allows Echo to duplicate an enemy hero and gain use of their abilities. While duplicating, Echo charges the copied enemy’s Ultimate multiple times faster! Copy that?
