Reading Time: 3 minutes

Bringing characters into a game from an existing IP is always challenging, but when you’re dealing with a big and beloved world like “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance,” it’s important not only to make them playable, but not to lose any of what makes them fan favorites!

To really bring the characters in The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics to life, the team at BonusXP went all-in on a job system. In tactics-based games, picking the right job for the challenge at hand can mean the difference between success and embarrassing failure. But picking the right job for your character can be even more critical.

Apart from level creation, designing jobs and pairing them to characters has been the bulk of the design and content work for the team at BonusXP. From an early framework of “cool moves,” bit by bit, the best abilities came together into a series of themed groups, then fully realized jobs with distinct combat roles.

The characters you play as in The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics are a mix of new faces and those you’ll be familiar with from the series. Each series character has an iconic job that utilizes the costume from the show instead of the standard costumes worn by other characters with the same job. One of the first characters from the Netflix series you’ll meet is Rian—a warrior who initially serves the Skeksis. With his background, the Guardian job makes the best sense. Guardians stay on the front lines to protect their allies by soaking up damage and to deal some heavy damage in hand-to-hand combat.

Brea is the opposite. A princess who’s far more interested in studying the lore of Thra than replacing her mother as All-Maudra, her love of learning makes her the perfect Adept. In the game, Brea uses her vast knowledge to attack enemies from afar with skills that can deal varied types of damage or add stackable debuffs that create interesting combination opportunities for her allies.

And finally, there’s Hup—a noble Podling Paladin who aspires to protect All-Maudra. Though he’s brave and loyal, he’s still just a Podling, charging headfirst into danger armed with wooden spoons. His fierce spirit (and his Paladin job skills) allows him to distract enemies and support his allies.

With over a dozen playable characters—made up of both original and series characters—and nearly twice as many jobs, the player has options for hundreds of combinations and can turn each encounter into an epic adventure. Just be careful where you leave your wooden spoons.

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics is coming soon to Xbox One on the Microsoft Store. Stay tuned to Xbox Wire for further details on this ID@Xbox title.
