5 Ways Hookbots Aims to Save Couch Multiplayer

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Couch multiplayer games are taking back their golden spot in gamers’ living rooms, gathering friends again around your console. is a good example of an indie-developed party game that’s making couch multiplayer hot again. Here are five ways they’re doing it.

    1. Up to 14 game modes

Tree Interactive, the indie studio behind Hookbots, understood that if you want to create a good couch game, you must fill it with tons of game modes. That’s why Hookbots is not just a fighting game, but a compilation of 14 different ways to crush each other’s bots. Hold the Flag, King of the Ring, Robo Bomb, Volleyhook, Baskethook, Hookball, Big Boss, Coin Collector, Color Rings, Team Deathmatch and many more modes promise to keep you playing until neighbors complain about noise.

    2. More than 99 variations to craft characters

A key component to avoid game fatigue character customization. In Hookbots, the characters you unlock and enemies you destroy allow you to craft new unique bots that will represent your mechanized alter-ego against your friends. From knights and metal dinosaurs to bounty hunters and space warriors, you can design your perfect bot to surprise your friends on the next game night.

    3. Active devs/gamers community

By default, a couch game means socializing with people around you. That’s why it made a lot of sense for Tree Interactive to involve players since the beginning of Hookbots’ development, where specific game mechanics designed with competitive play in mind were tested. In fact, tons of ideas from the community were published with the final game. Now that Hookbots is releasing, their Discord community just keeps growing and growing, allowing both gamers and developers to polish what makes a perfect couch game even more.

    4. Unlockable content without microtransactions or loot boxes

Just like the good old couch games, Hookbots rewards playing, not spending. The game offers you new content (skins, game modes, stages and more) not by the money you put in, but for the skills you and your friends shows playing face-to-face.

    5. It’s actually fun to play!

When was the last time you gathered around your PS4 with three of your best buds? Hookbots offers you hours of chaotic madness without worrying about a random online bully messing around. It also gives you a good excuse to hang out with your friends each Friday night. And if you want to improve your skills on your own, there’s always a Solo Mode to level up.

Hookbots launches August 28th for $19.99 USD.

A pop of color and more: updates to Android’s brandA pop of color and more: updates to Android’s brand

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Over the last decade, Android’s open platform has created a thriving community of manufacturers and developers that reach a global audience with their devices and apps. This has expanded beyond phones to tablets, cars, watches, TVs and more—with more than 2.5 billion active devices around the world. As we continue to build Android for everyone in the community, our brand should be as inclusive and accessible as possible—and we think we can do better in a few ways.

    Android Q is Android 10

    Android with map

First, we’re changing the way we name our releases. Our engineering team has always used internal code names for each version, based off of tasty treats, or desserts, in alphabetical order. This naming tradition has become a fun part of the release each year externally, too. But we’ve heard feedback over the years that the names weren’t always understood by everyone in the global community.

For example, L and R are not distinguishable when spoken in some languages. So when some people heard us say Android Lollipop out loud, it wasn’t intuitively clear that it referred to the version after KitKat. It’s even harder for new Android users, who are unfamiliar with the naming convention, to understand if their phone is running the latest version. We also know that pies are not a dessert in some places, and that marshmallows, while delicious, are not a popular treat in many parts of the world.

As a global operating system, it’s important that these names are clear and relatable for everyone in the world. So, this next release of Android will simply use the version number and be called Android 10. We think this change helps make release names simpler and more intuitive for our global community. And while there were many tempting “Q” desserts out there, we think that at version 10 and 2.5 billion active devices, it was time to make this change.

A refreshed look for the brand

The Android brand has evolved over time. Back in 2014, we updated our logo and brand color, and this year, we’re introducing a more modern, accessible look.

    Android new logo with robot

The design of the logo draws inspiration from the most recognizable non-human member of the community, the Android robot. The robot belongs to everyone in the community, and has long been a symbol of the fun and curiosity at the heart of Android. Now, it has a special place in our logo.

We also changed the logo from green to black. It’s a small change, but we found the green was hard to read, especially for people with visual impairments. The logo is often paired with colors that can make it hard to see—so we came up with a new set of color combinations that improve contrast.

We’ll officially start using the updated logo in the coming weeks with the final release of Android 10. Thank you to the community for supporting Android and inspiring us over the years.

As we continue to build Android for everyone, we’re introducing some changes that make our brand more inclusive and accessible.

Nioh 2: New Key Art Unleashes the Fiend Within

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Hey folks! It’s Tom from Team Ninja to give you a quick update on Nioh 2. To kick things off, I’d like to share with you the latest key visual showcasing our new protagonist. As you may have been able to detect from the visual, our central character is a half-breed. He is part human as well as possessing the extraordinary power of the Yokai. As a samurai warrior, his journey takes us through the treacherous Sengoku period of Japan. And his transformation from human to fiend will take him deep into the Dark Realm of the Yokai. I promise you that this metamorphosis will be spectacular and result in some truly intense action.

I also wanted to thank you and briefly let you know that we had a really productive alpha demo session back in May/June of this year. Over 50,000 players took part in this closed demo worldwide and nearly 18,000 participants responded to our survey afterwards! The overwhelming majority of opinions were very positive and supportive of the demo as we received tons of comments and constructive feedback for us to analyze. And since then, we have been hard at work to process all of that data and make the necessary adjustments to create an even more exceptional experience. Thanks again to everyone who participated in the alpha demo survey. We can’t wait to share the progress with you guys!

Speaking of which, we will be showing off a brand new consumer demo at the Tokyo Game Show 2019 in September. I can’t really disclose the specifics at this point, but more details will definitely be coming down the pipe soon. So stay tuned Yokai hunters! And prepare to unleash your darkness as Nioh 2 is on the horizon!

Hallo Leute!

    Nioh 2 on PS4

    Nioh 2 on PS4

Enenra.

  • It’s GCSE results day!

    It’s GCSE results day!

    Reading Time: 6 minutes

Today is GCSE results day, and with it comes the usual amount of excitement and trepidation as thousands of young people in the UK find out whether they got the grades they wanted. So here’s a massive CONGRATULATIONS from everyone at the Raspberry Pi Foundation to all the students out there who have worked so hard to get their GCSEs, A levels, BTECs, IBs, and a host of other qualifications.

We also want to highlight the efforts of the amazing teachers who have spent countless hours thinking up new ways to bring their subjects to life and inspire the next generation.

Looking at the initial data from the Department for Education, it’s clear that:

    • The number of students entering the Computer Science GCSE has gone up by 7.6%, so this is the sixth year running that the subject has gained popularity — great news!
    • The number of girls entering the Computer Science GCSE has grown by 14.5% compared to last year!
    • The proportion of Computer Science GCSE students achieving top grades (9 to 7) has gone up, and there’s been an even bigger increase in the proportion achieving a good pass (9 to 4) — amazing!

    Views from teachers

From L to R: Rebecca Franks, Allen Heard, Ben Garside, Carrie Anne Philbin

I caught up with four former teachers on our team to reflect on these findings and their own experiences of results days…

What thoughts and emotions are going through your head as a teacher on results day?

Ben: It’s certainly a nerve-wracking time! You hope that your students have reached the potential that you know that they are capable of. You log onto the computer the second you wake up to see if you’ve got access to the exam boards results page yet. It was always great being there to see their faces, to give them a high five, and to support them with working out their options going forward.

Rebecca: I think that head teachers want you to be worried about targets and whether you’ve met them, but as a teacher, when you look at each individual students’ results, you see their journey, and you know how much effort they’ve put in. You are just really proud of how well they have done, and it’s lovely to have those post-results conversations and celebrate with them. It makes it all worth it.

Allen: I liken the feeling to that of an expectant father! You have done as much as you can to make sure things run smoothly, you’ve tried to keep all those involved calm, and now the moment is here and you just want everything to be OK.

Carrie Anne: As a teacher, I always felt both nerves and excitement for results day, probably more so than my students did. Sleepless nights in the run-up to the big day were common! But I always enjoyed seeing my students, who I’d worked with since they were youngsters, see the culmination of their hard work into something useful. I always felt proud of them for how far they’d come.

There has been an increased uptake of students taking computing-related subjects at GCSE since last year. What do you think about this?

Ben: It’s great news and shows that schools are realising how important the subject is to prepare our young people for the future workplace.

Carrie Anne: It’s a sign that our message — that all students should have access to a Computing qualification of rigour, and that there is a willing and ready audience hungry for the opportunity to study Computing at a deeper level — is making traction. My hope is to see this number increase as teachers take part in the free National Centre for Computing Education professional development and certification over the coming years.

Rebecca: I think it’s a step in the right direction, but we definitely have a long way to go. We must make sure that computing is at the forefront of any curriculum model in our secondary schools, which is why the National Centre for Computing Education is so important. In particular, we must support schools in ensuring that KS3 computing is given the time it needs to give students the grounding for GCSE.

Allen: I agree with Rebecca: more needs to be done about teacher training and helping schools see the overall benefit to students in undertaking such subjects. Schools that are investing time in nurturing these subjects in their curriculum provision are seeing them become more popular and enjoying success. Patience is the key for senior leadership teams, and teachers need support and to have confidence in their ability to continue to deliver the subject.

Why is it important that more students learn about computing?

Rebecca: Computing feeds into so much of our everyday lives, and we must prepare our young people for a world that doesn’t exist yet. Computing teaches you logical thinking and problem-solving. These skills are transferable and can be used in all sorts of situations. Computing also teaches you essential digital literacy skills that can help you keep safe whilst using online tools.

Ben: For me, it’s really important that young people pick this subject to help them understand the world around them. They’ll hopefully then be able to see the potential of computing as a power for good and harness it, rather than becoming passive consumers of technology.

Carrie Anne: Following on from what Ben said, I also think it’s important that technology developed in the future reflects the people and industries using it. The tech industry needs to become more diverse in its workforce, and non-technical fields will begin to use more technology in the coming years. If we equip young people with a grounding in computing, they will be equipped to enter these fields and find solutions to technical solutions without relying on a small technical elite.

Imagine I’m a GCSE student who has just passed my Computer Science exams. What resources should I look at if I want to learn more about computing with the Raspberry Pi Foundation for free?

Rebecca: Isaac Computer Science would be the best place to start, because it supports students through their A level Computer Science. If you wanted to experiment and try some physical computing, then you could take a look at the Projects page of the Raspberry Pi Foundation website. You can filter this page by ‘Software type: Python’ and find some ideas to keep you occupied!

Allen: First and foremost, I would advise you to keep your hard-earned coding skills on point, as moving on to the next level of complexity can be a shock. Now is the time to start building on your already sound knowledge and get prepared for A level Computer Science in September. Isaac Computer Science would be a great place to start to undertake some further learning over the summer and prime yourself for further study.

Ben: Same as Rebecca and Allen, I’d be telling you to get started with Isaac Computer Science too. The resources that are being provided for free are second to none, and will really help you get a good feel for what A level Computer Science is all about.

Carrie Anne: Beyond the Raspberry Pi projects site and Isaac Computer Science, I’d recommend getting some face-to-face experience. Every year the Python community holds a conference that’s open to everyone. It’s a great opportunity to meet new people and learn new skills. PyConUK 2019 is taking place in September and has bursaries to support people in full-time education to attend.

We’ve been working on providing support for secondary and GCSE teachers as part of the National Centre for Computing Education this year. Could you talk about the support we’ve got available?

Allen: We’re producing resources to cover the whole range of topics that appear in all the Computing/Computer Science specifications. The aim of these resources is to provide teachers — both experienced and new to the subject — with the support they need to deliver quality, engaging lessons. Founded on sound pedagogical principles and created by a number of well-established teachers, these resources will help reduce workload and increase productivity for teachers, and increase engagement of students. This will ultimately result in some fantastic out-turns for schools, as well as developing confident computing teachers along the way.

Rebecca: As Allen explained, we are busy creating new, free teaching resources for KS3 and GCSE. The units will cover the national curriculum and beyond, and the lessons will be fully resourced. They will be accessible to teachers with varying levels of experience, and there will be lots of support along the way through online courses and face-to-face training if teachers want to know more. Teachers can already take our ‘CS Accelerator’ programme, which is extremely popular and has excellent reviews.

    Thanks for your time, everyone!

How was your GCSE results day? Are your students, or young people you know, receiving their results today? Tell us about it in the comments below.

  • Mistover Brings Dangerous Dungeon Expeditions to PS4 in October

Mistover Brings Dangerous Dungeon Expeditions to PS4 in October

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

Hello! I’m James Han, producer for Mistover, the latest game from Krafton Game Union. We’re best known for PUBG and TERA, but we’re entering new territory with Mistover, which focuses on strategy and choice-driven dungeon dives. The gameplay is presented in an eye-catching visual art style and over-the-top premise with a large roster of classes to recruit and master.

Mistover is coming to PS4 October 10, 2019 for $29.99. But in the meantime, here’s everything you need to know to prepare yourself for what is shaping up to be a gorgeous but challenging experience for all willing to answer the call!

    Enter the Misfortune Mist

Players are charged with forming an Expedition Corps to explore the mysterious Mist. It’s a substance that covers and affects everything in the Vortex, a Pillar of Despair that descended upon your realm, unleashing all kinds of horrible monsters and miseries. All attacks from this Pillar of Despair have subsided. This has given your realm the time to research and prepare for what may come next, so there was a resounding call to arms to any willing to brave the deadly mysteries and effects of what Corps members call the Misfortune Mist.

This Mist affects everything it encounters, sometimes in surprising ways; this allowed the team to introduce some unique gameplay elements. Some of these elements will be familiar to turn-based RPG mechanics, like a fog of war that lifts as players uncover the map. In other ways, the Mist offers some lore-based background, explaining Mistover’s procedurally generated dungeons (the fabric of reality is always changing!), adding replayability and opening up multiple ways to complete dungeons.

But the Mist also affects your party members. Increased exposure could grant a Corps member a brand-new ability, but it can also make teammates exasperated, affecting passive skills and dialogue options. Even players themselves can be overcome with greed, making you more obsessed with finding treasure chests at the expense of their natural instinct to survive and sense of empathy, resulting in permanent death. The effects of the Misfortune Mist also apply to monsters you encounter, items, materials, as well as gear and relics. It’s a constant balancing act that requires players to constantly weigh the pros and cons and the risks and rewards of time spent exposed to the Misfortune Mist while progressing.

    Introducing the Expedition Corps

When it comes to the Expedition Corps members — the real stars of Mistover — the first thing we hope fans notice is its striking art style and character designs that pull from both Western and gothic art aesthetics as well as manga/anime inspired designs. Some fans and critics have labeled Mistover’s look as “anime meets Darkest Dungeon” – and we invite that comparison!

Mistover features a turn-based combat system – and with the right formation — Corps crew members can perform powerful coordinated attacks. Your party members here are more than nameless, generic character classes. While many do fill traditional RPG roles (like the tanky Paladin or spell focused Witch), the team has gone above and beyond to give each Corps crew member a distinct personality, backstory, and corresponding playstyle– with full VO to show that every character is special. Mistover is also full of non-traditional character classes that fans of typical turn-based RPGs may not expect, like the mild-mannered rookie Grim Reaper and the single-minded half-demon prophet Onmyoji. In these instances and more, Mistover expands beyond a typical turn-based RPG, melding mechanics and genres to create fresh experience, rooted in a style and genre we know and love.

Who do you look forward to recruiting for your Expedition Corps the most? Let us know in the comments below and feel free to ask any questions!

Rather than accept his imperfect penmanship, he modified a 1980s-era Rotring NC-Scriber—originally meant for mechanical drawing use—to do this for him.

His project runs on an Arduino Uno and motor shield, along with custom mount for erasable markers. Phrases are programmed via the setup section of the sketch, but he hopes to implement the device’s keyboard for control with the help of a different motor driver in the future.

You can see it plotting away in the video below, while code and additional info can be found in Kenyer’s write-up.

Editors’ Choice: FFXIV Shadowbringers Takes the MMO to New Heights

    Reading Time: 5 minutes

Hi, I’m Justin Massongill, and I love Final Fantasy XIV.

I started playing five years ago and was instantly hooked by Square Enix’s innovative approach to controller-based MMO combat, Masayoshi Soken’s intoxicating soundtrack, the fact that I could level up every class and job on the same character, and the far-reaching — yet surprisingly friendly and welcoming — community.

But you’ve probably already heard the tale of the game’s metamorphosis into one of the most respected MMOs on the market, so I won’t get into that here. What I will get into is why FFXIV’s newest expansion, Shadowbringers, catapults this fourteenth mainline entry into the upper echelons of Final Fantasy history. Put plainly: Shadowbringers is one of the best Final Fantasy games ever. Yeah, I said it.

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mYtrNcPszFU&w=560&h=315]

Try to watch any FFXIV opening cinematic without getting goosebumps, I dare you.

The story of Shadowbringers sees your hero teleported to a new dimension (a Shard, in the game’s parlance) called the First. It seems their version of the Warriors of Light did perhaps too good a job eradicating the forces of darkness, and their world has been all but consumed by a torrent of unceasing, deadly light.

This premise sets some interesting narrative stakes: while you’ve built a reputation as a god-slaying, regime-toppling hero back home, this new dimension’s citizens have never heard of you. This is a refreshing change of pace from the borderline deistic reverence with which NPCs usually treat you, and it lets the story play out at a more personal level. Instead of simply nodding along as the story happens around you, your character’s own desires and motivations finally come into play.

A few shots I snapped using FFXIV’s robust photo mode

Your longtime comrades — the Scions of the Seventh Dawn — have been summoned to the First, too, and they have their own challenges to overcome. One seeks to uncover the sordid secrets of a too-good-to-be-true utopian city. Another finds himself at odds with the opposing ideas of living up to the responsibilities of fatherhood and ensuring his the girl he’s sworn to protect is able to fulfill her destiny.

The story of Shadowbringers plays out over around 50 or 60 hours, and is punctuated by appearances from some of the most “Final Fantasy”-ish villains the series has seen since the silver-haired Sephiroth graced our CRTs. One in particular — no spoilers — is written so effectively that it’s hard not to feel a sense of empathy for them by the time things comes to a head… I still feel a tinge of regret that we couldn’t have ended our time together on more amicable terms. Sigh.

While the story is what impressed me most about Shadowbringers, the core systems at play continue to provide a solid foundation that can support the dozens (hundreds (thousands?)?) of hours you’ll spend experiencing these stories. Many of the playable jobs have been changed, ranging from small tweaks to full-on overhauls, and they have generally been received well by the FFXIV community (especially after the recent 5.05 patch, which addressed some balance issues between the three available Healer jobs). The new Dancer and Gunbreaker jobs are highlights, providing the game’s most support-based job yet and a surprisingly active tank role, respectively. I main Black Mage and I’m over the moon with my level 80 rotation — it’s not a huge departure from the level 70 kit, but it’s been smoothed out and optimized in enough ways that it feels substantially more powerful. Explosions everywhere!

A legendary Guardian Force from Final Fantasy VIII makes an impressive return in FFXIV’s newest raid.

Two weeks after Shadowbringers launched, the new “Eden’s Gate” raid was unleashed upon players who had finished the expansion’s main story quest. I won’t get into the story details of this raid here, but there is one particularly breathtaking sequence in its first fight that I wrote about , if you don’t mind being spoiled on it. The loot system for this raid has been adjusted, too: long story short, drops are more plentiful so it’s far easier to get your hands on the specific piece of gear you’re chasing. There’s also a new 24-player raid on the way, which is based on the world of NieR and NieR Automata, and is being developed in collaboration with Yoko Taro and Yosuke Saito. It’s gonna be weird.

Shadowbringers’ soundtrack is, as always, a highlight. The drastically different setting for this expansion gave Soken an opportunity to branch out and take the game’s soundtrack in some interesting new directions, masterfully invoking myriad genres that fit their respective areas and encounters like a glove (or, more appropriately, a really comfy pair of headphones). He also continues to expertly harness the emotional power of leitmotif, aiming to jerk a tear from all but the driest eyes.

Semi-related note: Square Enix recently made a ton of their soundtracks available on streaming services, including Spotify. The OST for Shadowbringers isn’t out yet, but you can listen to hundreds of earlier FFXIV tracks there right now.

I grew up with this series. It’s been a part of my life for nearly 30 years, introducing me to the concept of role-playing games for the first time. Never did I imagine that the story of any MMO would stand toe-to-toe with those of FF’s 16/32-bit golden era. But Naoki Yoshida and team are not content to build merely the best MMO on the market. As far as I’m concerned, Shadowbringers is the new final word in fantasy.

No Man’s Sky Beyond Gets Physical Release on PS4 Next Month

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Hello! Over three years ago the first PlayStation 4 discs of No Man’s Sky were hitting retail shelves worldwide.

Those discs represented the first step along an amazing three-year journey that we and the No Man’s Sky community have been on together. It’s been a rollercoaster, but six major free updates later (Foundations, Pathfinder, Atlas Rises, Next, The Abyss and Visions), and we arrived at Beyond.

Launched last week, Beyond is our largest and in some ways most important update. It massively expands multiplayer and increases the capacity for social interactions in a major way. On top of this the whole game is now playable in fully realised VR.

It also delivers a whole load of new features, large and small, which come together with the two other pillars to form what we call No Man’s Sky Version 2.0.

Beyond is our attempt to bring all of the strands of No Man’s Sky into a more cohesive whole and to fill in the detail so that, no matter your play style, no matter whether you’re a newcomer or veteran, it is an instantly accessible world and one that makes sense.

It seems only fitting that we should bundle up all of these three years of updates, re-master the game and re-issue it on a shiny new disc.

We’re super excited to tell you that a physical version of No Man’s Sky: Beyond will be available to buy on North America on September 10, and in Europe on 11th September.

No Man’s Sky continues to be an amazing journey, thank you for joining us.

    Much love,
    Sean

Hallo!

No Man's Sky Beyond on PS4No Man's Sky Beyond on PS4

No Man's Sky Beyond on PS4

    Alles Liebe,
    Sean
