The Next Sony PS5 is Going to be the Most Powerful Console of all Time

Reading Time: 4 minutes

We still don’t know when exactly Sony plans to announce the PS5 (or whatever it ends up being called), but Sony’s John Kodera said earlier this year that the company “will use the next three years to prepare the next step, to crouch down so that we can jump higher in the future”.

Thanks to the some what release of the Xbox One X, the console market was able to catch up to the PC gaming community in terms of game performance. Of course, the Xbox One X isn’t very powerful, but thanks to fantastic optimization, the Xbox One X can run games at 4K 30 FPS. The Sony PlayStation 5, is going to be much more powerful than the Xbox One X, and after optimization, it might be able to do 4k 60 FPS.

Sony PS 5 Expected Specs

According to the latest gaming rumors, the Sony PlayStation 5 is going to feature an AMD Ryzen CPU and an AMD Navi GPU. Thanks to a recent leak, we know that someone at Sony is working with Ryzen Technology.

“A principal programmer at Sony associated with the firm’s Advanced Technology Group is working with AMD’s Ryzen technology, improving the Zen core’s micro-architecture support within the LLVM compiler stack – a key component of a tool used in the PlayStation 4 development environment. Of course, there is no PS4 product using the Ryzen processor, leading to speculation that this is related to a prospective next-gen PlayStation 5 console currently in development.”

The PS5’s GPU, Navi, is going to be a 7nm GPU. As of now, no other console or PC features a 7nm GPU, and that is excellent news for fans of PlayStation consoles. With these specs, the PS5 is likely going to be able to run games at 4k, 30 FPS ultra. It is rumored that the PS5 will feature the same performance as a $500 gaming PC.

Backwards Compatibility

Sony has recently published a patent that has been the subject of speculation. Patents filed are often scrutinized for a number of things, primarily the fact that it means nothing concrete a large amount of the time. Just because a company files a patent does not mean that the patented concept will release as a product. Sony is well known for this as well, filing patents that never release or come to use, some of which are a little more outlandish than others.

Many believe that these unique features mentioned in the patent are a clear indication that Sony is attempting to join the market in allowing backwards compatibility on their next console, a feature already celebrated in Microsoft’s Xbox One. The argument against it being a new feature for the next console in the PlayStation family is that the patent was originally filed in 2016; all the patent could be describing is features that are already used in the PlayStation 4 when running PlayStation 1 and PlayStation 2 software.

The argument can also be made that nothing has been confirmed officially by PlayStation or Sony, as such it is possible that the patent described could be just another that is never used in a commercial product. Only time will tell whether or not the patent will come to be a feature for whatever console Sony makes as the PlayStation 4’s successor.

PlayStation 5 Price and Release Date

According to the latest rumors, the Sony PlayStation 5 is going to be released sometime around 2020. It is rumored that the PS5 will feature the same specs as a $500 gaming PC when it is released. 2020 will be a good release date for the PS5 as it will be seven years after the PS4 came out. Just like the PS4, the PS5 will likely be priced around $400 as Sony wouldn’t want to make the same mistake as Microsoft and release a $500 console.

While it is currently unknown what the upcoming PS5 console will look like, there are many fan-made concepts online. Two concepts, in particular, are breathtaking, and you can watch them below.

The first one was made by Joseph Dumary and it has received over 2 millions views on YouTube so far. The artist even provided the list of features this console would have, so let’s take a look at them.

Now let’s take a look to this PS5 concept made by French blog (VR4Player on Twitter) and shared on their YouTube Channel with demonstration video list of features this console would have as can be seen below.

These videos are not an official Sony Interactive Entertainement ad. All the elements which compose it are only an artist’s view and have nothing official.
