Welcome to “Green Hell”: Adding the Legendary Nordschleife to Forza Motorsport

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

“The Nürburgring was built in 1927 with extraordinary length through the middle of the Eifel forests. It remains the longest permanent race track to this day. Even back then, the racing drivers who came to the Nürburgring knew what an incredibly special and challenging track the Nürburgring actually is,” explains Alexander, quoting Rudolf Caracciola, who won the first car race on the Nürburgring and described his experience as follows:

“When we came to the newly opened Nürburgring in 1927, we opened our eyes. We had never experienced anything like it. There was a road in the middle of the Eifel mountains, a closed loop with almost 180 bends spread over 22 kilometers. It was a track with gradients that were a sharp blow to the engine, but also with unspeakably beautiful views far across the country, of valleys and villages.”

On the one hand, it is the almost 100-year history that still inspires awe and respect among motorsport enthusiasts and professional racing drivers alike: 1000-kilometer races, fatal accidents, unforgettable Formula 1 races, new records and impressive performances by the best drivers in the world. Record-breaking world champion Michael Schuhmacher made such a lasting impression that an entire corner was named after him. When Niki Lauda’s Ferrari went up in flames on the Nordschleife in 1976, the entire motorsport world held its breath.

In addition to the history, it is the track itself that accounts for the legend of the Nordschleife: the unique layout, the dynamics, the differences in altitude and the unique atmosphere. If you want to complete a lap, you have to tackle over 70 corners and 300 meters of elevation gain. An experience that demands everything from the driver and is now possible in Forza Motorsport.

In Forza Motorsport, players will discover what makes this circuit an adrenaline-filled crucible, one which pushes professionals, manufacturers, cars – and now, finally, Forza fans – to their limits. YouTuber and racing expert rAii has already put the track through its paces in countless racing games, including the new Forza Motorsport, and shared his thoughts on the presentation with Xbox Wire DACH: “It just feels like the Nordschleife that you know. That’s the most important thing.”

Latest Forza Motorsport Update Brings Daytona and More to Players

    Reading Time: 5 minutes

Get ready for race weekend with Daytona, new Spotlight cars and the Italian Challengers Tour.

Forza Motorsport Update 4 introduces the prestigious Daytona International Speedway – a truly iconic racetrack renowned for its marvels in engineering. Meanwhile, a new Italian Challengers Featured Tour invites you to build four staples of Italy’s automotive heritage! Let’s dive into the details.

Update 4 will be available to download on Xbox Series X|S, Windows PCs and Steam beginning on Tuesday, January 16. New events across the Career, Featured Multiplayer and Rivals will start on Thursday, January 18.

On Tuesday we’ll share details about the fixes contained in Update 4. This version is focused on new content and events, and contains only minor fixes for car and track content compared to our previous updates. Work on game fixes to address top community issues is ongoing – look out for additional improvements in Update 5 and beyond.

    New Track – Daytona

Daytona International Speedway is a historic, world-famous track with banked, high-speed corners and in Forza Motorsport, it features two distinct layouts. Master the high-velocity 2.5-mile Tri-oval Circuit and the technical, more challenging 3.59-mile Sports Car Circuit.

Compete on both layouts in Career Mode and Featured Multiplayer, set your fastest lap times in any car class in Time Attack, or enjoy a Daytona race day either solo or with your friends in Free Play and Private Multiplayer. We’ll also have a special Daytona Sports Car Series in Featured Multiplayer to replicate the excitement of the iconic race weekend.

Daytona International Speedway was built in 1959 by NASCAR founder Bill France Sr., who wanted to create a track that was faster than any other in the world. Since then, it has hosted several races including the annual Daytona 500, as well as IndyCar and IMSA. The track was renovated in 2016 with the installation of 101,500 seats, making it one of the largest stadiums in the United States!

With the release of Update 4, select existing Builders Cup series will be updated to integrate Daytona, Hockenheim, and Yas Marina.

    Spotlight Cars – Update 4

Spotlight cars are featured in the Showroom every week, available for you to acquire with a 30% discount using in-game credits. These cars can be used in the new Italian Challengers Tour, as well as Spotlight Series events in Featured Multiplayer and Rivals.

Forza Motorsport VIP Members will also get an exclusive 15% discount on the 1988 Lamborghini Countach LP5000 QV in the Showroom for a limited time.

    Car Pass – Update 4

Here is your Forza Motorsport Car Pass calendar for the next 4 weeks:

Car Pass includes 30 new-to-Motorsport cars with one released every week until Car Pass is complete. Get Car Pass today in the Forza Motorsport Deluxe and Premium Editions.

New Career Tour – Italian Challengers

Discover how Italian cars became an unquestionable staple of the automotive industry in Italian Challengers, the new Featured Tour in Career Mode.

It starts with All-Wheel Driven, where Lancia stands ready to take on its historic adversaries on the track as you race iconic rally machines. Then in Roadster Renaissance, step behind the wheel of the Abarth 124 Spider and battle the iconic Mazda MX-5 to discover the shared origins of these unique siblings.

Tour the world of luxury sports sedans – a class once dominated by Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz – and experience a fierce contender in Alfa Performance. Conclude this Featured Tour with Italian beauty, craftsmanship, and speed by racing with track-focused, high-performance Ferrari cars in Prancing Power.

Italian Challengers series do not have to be completed in a particular week – you have until February 29, 2024, to finish this latest Featured Tour. Spotlight cars are available at a discount for the week during which they are featured. Complete all 4 series to unlock the 2010 Lamborghini Murciélago LP 670-4 SV!

New Career Series – Classic Open Class

With each update to Forza Motorsport, the Open Tour gets refreshed with new events and a new reward car.

Open Tour is where you can continue the journey of your favorite cars. Cars that you’ve already built in a different Builders Cup series can be further levelled up and upgraded in the Open Tour.

In Update 4, the Open Tour is all about racing the classics. Build your favorite cars and bring them to the track to race models of automotive history.

All 4 refreshed Open Tour series (C, B, A, S) will be available on January 18. Complete all 4 series before February 15, 2024, to add the 1965 Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GTA Stradale to your collection.

Here’s a look at your Featured Multiplayer calendar of upcoming events for Update 4:

    Formula Mazda Series – January 18 – February 15

With their smooth power delivery and brilliant handling, open-wheel Mazda formula cars are an ideal entry-level series to develop a driver’s skills for racing’s top classes.

    Forza P1 Series – January 18-24

Experience cutting-edge racecars with massive aerodynamic downforce, super-efficient engines and performance-boosting hybrid systems.

Daytona Sports Car Series – January 25-31

Experience the thrill of Daytona race weekend in Forza Motorsport! Every few hours, the car class cycles between Forza GT, Forza P2, and Forza Proto-H with natural time-of-day progression like the real 24-hour race.

VW Golf GTI Spec Series – February 1-7

Get behind the wheel of the car that gave birth to the Hot Hatch revolution more than four decades ago.

Modern Factory Racecar Series – February 8-15

Race through a field of ultimate track day specials in the Modern Factory Racecar series. These mid-engine production cars feature unique upgrades designed to achieve the highest performance metrics and ensure victory on the track.

Set your fastest lap times across new Rivals events in Forza Motorsport Update 4. Look out for a special new event featuring the classic 1990 Mercury #15 Whistler Radar Cougar XR-7 at Daytona Tri-oval Circuit.

Meanwhile if you have VIP Membership, check out the Titanic Tuner VIP Rivals on Road America – East Route where you can drive the 2019 Subaru WRX STI S209 Forza Edition.

Update 4 also means the beginning of Stage 3 of the Logitech McLaren G Challenge. Sign up at Discord.gg/LogitechG to qualify for prizes, including a chance to win a VIP racing experience with McLaren!

Once registered, set your fastest laps at Grand Oak – National Circuit in the 2015 McLaren P1 GTR. The top drivers per region advance to the semifinals in February 2024.

Forza Motorsport: The Ultimate Racing Game for Car Lovers – Out Now and Included with Game Pass

    Summary

    • Choose from over 500 real-world cars including more than 100 cars new to Forza Motorsport across 20 tracks with fan-favorite locations and multiple track layouts.
    • Race alongside your friends or compete against cutting-edge AI opponents with customizable racing events – from single races to an ongoing career mode.
    • Forza Motorsport is out now for Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC, plus it is included with Game Pass.

Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to visit one of the largest private automobile collections in the world, and as you might expect, the biggest names in the industry were on display – everything from Ferrari and Lamborghini to Jaguar and Bugatti. It even included some of the earliest and rarest American muscle cars like the Yenko Camaro and Plymouth Hemi ‘Cuda convertible. The experience was a bit overwhelming, standing there amidst such pristine and treasured cars, knowing most of them were built with a similar purpose – to go fast, but ultimately sharing the same fate – they never would.

    Forza Motorsport

As a car enthusiast, that is what makes Forza Motorsport so special to me. I know realistically speaking I will never sit behind the wheel of a Bugatti Chiron or Jaguar XJ220, much less drive one. On a racetrack. At 200+ miles per hour. In the rain. But with Forza Motorsport, I can! I love fast cars as much as I do fun games, so today is one that I have been looking forward to all year as Forza Motorsport, my most anticipated game of 2023, races onto Game Pass for Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC.

    Cars, Cars, and More Cars

I don’t know what is more impressive, the fact Forza Motorsport shipped with 500 cars, that 100 of them are new to the series, or that Turn 10 Studios will continue to regularly add more. Nearly 100 years of automotive history is represented in this extraordinary collection, with the oldest car in Forza Motorsport being the 1926 Bugatti Type 35 and the newest being the 2024 Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray, which is one of this year’s cover cars.

With the Free Play mode, you can rent any car and take it for a drive (free of charge, but you will not earn Car XP). So, if you want to test drive a 1981 Ford Fiesta XR2, you can. Or you can get behind the wheel of the most expensive car (currently) in the game, the 2020 Koenigsegg Jesko. To start out, I chose something I have a little bit of real-world experience with, the 2015 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat, before switching over to the 2021 Rimac Nevera, the electric hypercar often billeted as the fastest car in the world. It is indeed fast, and with no gas-powered engine noise, it is also a little eerie, as you race down the track at 200 mph and the only thing you hear is your heart beating in your chest (that might be a slight exaggeration). If you love cars as much as I do, you will have no problem finding a car you love in Forza Motorsport. I can’t guarantee you will have an easy time settling on which one to purchase first.

    Forza Motorsport

    Let’s Go Racing

You can’t have a great racing game without having great places to go racing, and Forza Motorsport features some of the most iconic locations in all of motorsports, with more tracks on the way. The iconic Grand Prix Nürburgring circuit is included, as is the ever-popular Weathertech Raceway Laguna Seca. One of my personal favorites is Lime Rock Park. I just like the layout and how you can let out of the throttle and roll through most of the turns without having to get on the brakes too hard (and it doesn’t have any of those deceptive turns that sneak up on you).

The tracks all feel so real, you will want to grab a hotdog from the concession stand and a t-shirt from one of the merch trailers before heading to the pits. Adding to the realism is the dynamic time-of-day with weather and unique driving conditions feature. Obviously, I knew the game was going to include this, but what I did not expect was the range of possibilities. There are ten Time of Day options ranging from sunrise to midnight, and even more weather options. Would you like your rain to be a drizzle, all out thunderstorm, or something in between, because that is the level of detail you can choose from. These variables will impact how the tracks look and feel, and ultimately how you and the other racers will perform. During several rainy training sessions, I would pull over and just listen to the pitter patter of rain drops on the windshield as I contemplated the meaning of life (okay, really I was just looking for the windshield wiper button).

    Forza Motorsport

Race How You Want With Who You Want

Turn 10 Studios has always placed accessibility at the forefront of Forza Motorsport’s design and is already receiving high praise for it being one of the most accessible games ever made. But the team also deserves recognition for how approachable they have made Forza Motorsport for players of all skill levels by creating a competitive racing platform that caters to rookie racecar drivers all the way up to those wanting the most realistic, immersive racing experience possible. By fine tuning the difficulty and driving assist settings to your skill level, you can create a racing experience that is both challenging and rewarding. And with the new Risk vs Reward feature, you can even select your starting grid position, which will show your projected finish and podium bonus. I was starting out in the 10th position on most races but found I was catching the leader within a few laps, so each race I try to go a spot or two deeper in the field to earn even more Car XP.

As you race, you will earn Car XP, and you can use this to upgrade and tune your car by selecting from more than 800 performance upgrades – including fuel and air systems, engine, platform and handling, tires and wheels, and drivetrain. Using Car XP instead of purchasing the parts allows you to try different setups without further expense. And if you would rather race than tinker, you can opt for the Quick Upgrade and let the game handle tuning your car with a balanced setup.

    Forza Motorsport

If you want to race alone, in a single-player free play or career mode, those options are available. Or you can join any number of online multiplayer games, including your own private matches, and race against others. For those seeking a combination of the two, you will want to check out the Rivals mode, which allows you to compete against ghost cars to post the fastest lap times on tracked leaderboards. You will see how you stack up against the fastest racers without having to race against them. I really enjoyed the Rivals mode because it’s not only a fun and competitive experience, but it is also a great learning aid to see the cars and settings the faster drivers are using and what line they are taking through the turns.

    Forza Motorsport

    Let’s Have a Clean Race

Surely, I am not the only one who has (accidentally) taken a shortcut off track, used the retaining wall to slingshot through turns, and pinballed off other cars on my race to the front of the field. Forza Motorsport implements new features and even incentivizes skillful driving to assist you in becoming the best racecar driver you can be…and it is working because I find myself looking at this feedback each lap to improve the next.

Each track is divided into Track Segments and your performance through each of these scoring loops is evaluated and displayed on screen providing you with immediate feedback. Plus, you are rewarded with Car XP based on your performance, so there is an extra incentive to do well. You will also receive Car XP for regular on-track activities like passing cars and improving on previous Track Segment times. Additionally, you can be penalized with time penalties for illegal passes and running off the track for an extended period.

    Forza Motorsport

Don’t worry, you will still have “pass in the grass” moments like Dale Earnhardt did at Charlotte Motor Speedway All-Star Race back in 1987 and you can still lean on cars and trade a little paint as you navigate those tight turns, but I applaud Turn 10 for implementing creative ways to inspire clean, competitive racing.

Turn 10 Studios has crafted an innovative racing simulation with iconic cars, incredible photorealistic visuals, realistic physics, and lifelike AI racers, but even more than that, they have created a live, connected, immersive, accessible, and ever-changing competitive racing platform that will evolve and grow with the Forza community.

  • Welcome to Forza Motorsport: From Forza Horizon to Falling in Love With Cars

Welcome to Forza Motorsport: From Forza Horizon to Falling in Love With Cars

    Reading Time: 9 minutes

Since the first Forza Motorsport launched in 2005, the Forza franchise has been about falling in love with cars and building community. As a co-founder at Turn 10 Studios, I had the honor of working on the very first Forza Motorsport and have been with the studio for 20 years. In that time, we’ve grown considerably but, through it all, a constant has been our love for cars, pushing the limits of gaming technology, and creating a racing community for everyone. With less than two weeks to go before we release the brand-new Forza Motorsport globally on October 10, we wanted to share more of our vision for the game, explain how Forza Horizon titles have informed our racing sim, and share our approach for both new players and our core community.

To start, we’ve been asked why we didn’t call this ‘Forza Motorsport 8,’ and it’s a fair question. From the beginning, we’ve designed the latest Forza Motorsport to be an evolving racing platform, with new content that adds to the experience of automotive entertainment through skill and competition. Last week we shared a little more about what players can expect with our evolving racing platform on forza.net. It’s due to this shift that we didn’t need a number in the title; we created a platform.

    Forza Horizon 5 Image

    On the Horizon

In 2012, our studio partners at Playground Games released the first Forza Horizon, putting their signature twist on open world racing while building within our ForzaTech engine. It’s safe to say their work has made the Forza franchise even better. A lot has happened since our last Motorsport title, Forza Motorsport 7. Playground Games released two incredible games, Forza Horizon 4 and Forza Horizon 5, we moved into a new console generation with Xbox Series X|S, we’ve expanded our platforms across PC, Steam and Cloud Gaming, and Xbox Game Pass has become the best value in gaming and is synonymous with Xbox.

We’re often asked about the difference between both titles within the overall franchise. Where Forza Horizon expresses its vision through freedom and exploration, Forza Motorsport focuses on competition and honing your skills – and both focus on accessibility, authenticity, and immersion in their own way.

As Motorsport’s roots are within racing simulation, we wanted you to be immersed as soon as you start Forza Motorsport. You’ll experience the beautifully rebuilt Maple Valley track in the 2024 Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray, followed immediately by the exciting Hakone circuit in Japan in the 2023 Cadillac V-Series.R. You can check out almost 18 minutes of initial gameplay of Forza Motorsport here to see for yourself.

Forza Motorsport has a rich history of championing accessibility in gaming, innovations like the driving line have opened racing to millions of players. Forza Horizon 5 focused on accessibility and inclusive design from the first stages of development. Their innovative support for American Sign Language (ASL) and British Sign Language (BSL) in Forza Horizon 5’s in-game cinematics was just one of their many accessibility features. All of us at Xbox embody the value that gaming is for everyone, and we’re proud that Forza Motorsport continues this tradition. Whether it’s the innovative Blind Driving Assists or One Touch Driving, thanks to the great work of our team and feedback from our incredible accessibility consultants, we’ve created our most accessible Motorsport ever.

    Forza Motorsport Image

    This is Forza Motorsport

Let’s talk a little bit more about what Forza Motorsport is at its core. We’ve used the period since our last launch to innovate, redevelop, and refocus on the very core of the game. The entire experience of racing at the limit, improving your skill, building up your car, and competing on the track have been completely rethought. Our goal was to create a live, connected, immersive, accessible, and ever-changing competitive racing platform that will evolve and grow with our community. We’ve created a more competitive, accurate, and rewarding racing experience thanks to huge, foundational improvements in our physics and AI – more than all previous Motorsports combined. If you know Forza, you will feel the difference immediately.

At launch we will have 20 tracks from around the world with multiple layouts, including 5 new-to-Motorsport tracks, and over 500 cars. And that’s just the start. All the cars, tracks, features, and innovations are highly focused on our larger vision. Our hope is that you find the 10 or so cars that matter to you, and that these cars change over time, evolving with you as you build them and hone your skills. Our game will grow as you grow your skills, and as you find your place in this competitive and creative community. In short, we hope that you will fall in love with cars through skill and competition.

We can’t wait to see you at the starting line. To everyone, welcome to Forza Motorsport.
