How Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World – The Prophecy of the Throne stays true to the anime

    Reading Time: 5 minutes

Re:Zero follows Subaru Natsuki, an average high school student who is magically transported to another world where he has the power to “Return by Death,” or literally the ability to turn back time by dying. Season 1 and 2 have been very popular at anime streaming sites. If you are a fan of the anime, light novel, or manga, you do not want to miss the video game adaptation of Re:Zero.

Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World – The Prophecy of the Throne is coming to PS4 on January 29 for North America and February 5 for Europe. Check out the game overview trailer we just released!

How Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World – The Prophecy of the Throne stays true to the anime

Today I have Alex Flagg and Hiro Watanabe, the localization producers for Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World – The Prophecy of the Throne to talk about what goes into creating a video game adaptation of Re:Zero.

Since the Re:Zero anime and light novel are very popular in the West, a lot of people might know this already… But just in case some people are not familiar with Re:Zero, can you tell us a little bit about the overall storyline and how the anime and the video game adaptation are linked?

Hiro Watanabe: Re:Zero follows the story of Subaru, a shut-in living in Japan who finds himself transported to another world. He eventually falls for a silver-haired half-elf girl, who happens to be a candidate to become the next ruler of the kingdom, and discovers that he has the ability to go back in time whenever he dies, allowing him to redo the mistakes of his past. I don’t want to give too much away, but he ends up getting involved in a series of events involving assassins, cultists, witches, and some other eccentric characters.

Re:Zero - Starting Life in Another World - The Prophecy of the Throne

I heard the English dub cast of the Re:Zero -Starting Life in Another World- anime will return to reprise their roles! Was it difficult to do the recording while we were under quarantine?

Hiro: Recording under quarantine definitely came with its difficulties. Most of the work was done remotely, but we worked closely with the same studio that recorded the anime dub for this series, and the VAs and directors are all fantastic at what they do. We did have some technical hiccups along the way, but I think the end result turned out great.

Re:Zero - Starting Life in Another World - The Prophecy of the Throne

We know that there are six new characters. Can you tell us a little bit about Melty and how she is involved in the royal selection?

Hiro: Melty is the nun that’s been featured in a lot of the promo material for this title. She’s a candidate of the royal selection, but has a more gentle and reserved personality compared to the other royal candidates who tend to be more headstrong. She and her camp bring an interesting dynamic to the cast, and those who are familiar with the series might enjoy seeing how events play out differently with their involvement.

We know there is already a big fan base for Re:Zero. Was there any challenge to make the game appealing to the existing Re:Zero fans?

Alex:  There were certain things we knew fans would be expecting from this title. Like, “this has to be in a Re:Zero game.” One of those key points would be Return by Death. It’s such an interesting and unique part of Re:Zero, so we are happy to say it is implemented into this game.

Hiro: Return by Death is an iconic part of the series, and works well as a game mechanic in which one of the main objectives is to gather intel and items to help you get through obstacles. I think fans also enjoy Re:Zero for the storyline and character interactions, so I think they’ll appreciate that this title was fully supervised by the original author, Tappei Nagatsuki. It was a challenge with so many mediums of this series using different terms and phrasing, but we (especially our editor) put extra care into researching the characters and story for this game.

What do you think is the biggest draw of this game? Who do you think will enjoy playing?

Alex: I think the biggest draw of the game is being able to see your favorite Re:Zero characters in new situations and storylines. They’re expanding the world a bit with this title so that will be very cool for fans of the series.

Hiro: With the script having been supervised by the original author Tappei Nagatsuki, the character designs done by the series artist Shinichirou Otsuka, and both the Japanese and English cast reprising their roles for this title, I think there’s a lot for fans who are looking forward to more Re:Zero content to enjoy. Also, it’s always fun to see your favorite characters in new situations like Alex mentioned.

    Thank you Alex and Hiro!

Wie Re:ZERO – Starting Life in Another World – The Prophecy of the Throne den Geist des Anime einfängt

    Reading Time: 5 minutes

Re:ZERO – Starting Life in Another World – The Prophecy of the Throne erscheint am 5. Februar 2021 in Europa für PS4. Schaut euch unseren brandneuen Übersichtstrailer an!

Wie Re:ZERO – Starting Life in Another World – The Prophecy of the Throne den Geist des Anime einfängt

Re:Zero - Starting Life in Another World - The Prophecy of the Throne

Re:Zero - Starting Life in Another World - The Prophecy of the Throne

  • Katana Kami: A Way of the Samurai Story Hits PS4 February 20, Free DLC to Follow

Katana Kami: A Way of the Samurai Story Hits PS4 February 20, Free DLC to Follow

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

Hello all you ronin out there! We here at Spike Chunsoft are happy to announce that Katana Kami: A Way of the Samurai Story, is set to release February 20!

Way of the Samurai is a franchise built on Japanese-inspired hack-and-slash action set in a quirky, quasi-historically accurate Meiji-era Japan. The series began in 2002 with Way of the Samurai on the PS2 and has continued through the console generations, finally arriving on PS4 in the form of Katana Kami. While more of a spin-off than a true sequel, Katana Kami still has all of the distinct characters, themes, and action the series is known for.

Katana Kami takes place in the peaceful (for now) Rokkotsu Pass, a familiar setting for franchise vets. The swordsmith Dojima falls into debt, and the conniving debt collectors take his beautiful daughter Nanami as collateral. The protagonist of the story arrives and agrees to help Dojima repay the debt… in return for his daughter’s hand in marriage. Hey, no one said this wandering ronin was running a charity.

This kicks off the game’s main gameplay loop: the player journeys into the mysterious caves under the pine tree “Ipponmatsu” to collect materials and swords by night and sell swords through Dojima’s smithy by day. The dungeons themselves are randomized to keep you on your toes, and the deeper down into the dungeons you go, the rarer and more powerful the items you find. But be careful, because the enemies get much tougher as well. Do you dare delve deeper for better loot at the risk of being mauled by powerful foes? Be prepared to face wild animals, the undead, and elite monsters based on Japanese folklore. Hope you make it out alive, because you lose all your stuff if you die. However, if you’re feeling lucky, you can defeat your doppelganger spirit the next time you enter the dungeon to steal back your lost loot.

There’s also online play so you can challenge the dungeons with others. Or you can just get in there, kill your buddy in a duel, and take all their stuff. Your choice.

Back on the surface, stop by the smithy, drop off all the material you gathered to Dojima, then help him run the shop. Then meet all the quirky characters living in Rokkotsu Pass and take sword orders from them.

There are three rival factions in Rokkotsu Pass, each with its own history and personality. Depending on how you accept (or reject) and deliver orders, you can ally yourself with one of those factions, giving them all the best swords and gear, or try to maintain the balance of power by treating all orders as equally as possible. Whatever you decide to do, just make sure you have the money when the debt collector comes knocking.

Also, don’t forget to download the two free DLCs that are available through February 20-27 at PlayStation Store.

We’re really excited about this title and the chance to introduce a potentially brand-new audience to Way of the Samurai. See you in the underground, samurai.

  • AI: The Somnium Files Out Now, Interview With Assistant Director Akira Okada

AI: The Somnium Files Out Now, Interview With Assistant Director Akira Okada

    Reading Time: 5 minutes

AI: The Somnium Files launches today! We’re celebrating the global release here at PlayStation.Blog with an exclusive interview with the assistant director, Akira Okada.

In this new interview, you’ll see why Okada is the brains behind all the challenges and puzzles you face in the game’s Somnium and multi-branching paths.

AI: The Somnium Files Out Now, Interview With Assistant Director Akira Okada

Ari Advincula: What were the particular challenges of having both an “Investigation” mode and a “Somnium” mode?

Akira Okada: How those two parts connect is an integral part of this game. I was in close contact with the scenario writer/director Uchikoshi, who was mainly involved with the “Investigation” part during development.

I was mostly in charge of the “Somnium” part. I would put in requests that I got from Uchikoshi into the Somnia, but sometimes I would need to request a change be made to the Investigation part in order for the upcoming Somnium part to work better. This back-and-forth style of development was flexible, but a challenge.

Also… I asked our team members about any recent dreams they had to look for usable ideas. However, they were too bizarre and we couldn’t use them in the game. *laughs*

AA: What makes this project different from other projects you’ve worked on in the past?

AO: This was my first new IP, so everything was different compared to past projects.
Creating a new game system, smoothing out gameplay, creating a game that would be loved by the person playing it… All of that involved trial and error.

One big thing I remember was being told, “Do what you want to do” by the producer. I had major responsibilities, but besides that, I was able to do whatever I wanted to do. That was definitely different.

AA: What is your favorite part of the game and why?

AO: I love everything. I can’t choose a number one favorite, but… if I had to pick one thing, it would be the cool, unique characters. Everyone feels very human and shows a range of emotions.

In the story, the characters act based on their feelings. When a character acts in a way you wouldn’t expect or shows an emotion that they normally try to hide, I know that everyone playing will grow to love them. They’ll want to see the story of these characters.

The character I like most is Mizuki. Because she’s so cute!

AA: What is your favorite Somnium and why?

AO: Sorry, but… can I give you two?

    AA: Of course! *laughs*

AO: First would be Iris’s Somnium. She has a totally different dream depending on the day. In the third day of the story, one route will let you dive into her dream. That dream world shows you something you wouldn’t expect from a bright, cheery girl like her. When I created this stage, I got a good reaction from the team, so I was pretty confident in it.

At the end of development, I remember playing through this stage with my palms getting sweaty, even though I was the one who came up with it!

The other one is Ota’s Somnium. That dream world is filled with his heroism, fragility, vanity, and hobbies. It was so much fun creating his dream world. I was laughing constantly while making it.

AA: Do you have any special comments on what it was like working on AI: The Somnium Files? Or a special behind-the-scenes story you’d like to share?

AO: The beginning of development was constant trial and error… I haven’t told a lot of people this, but there were a lot of preliminary ideas for the Somnium part: VR, a Sound Novel, a pop-up picture book… there were really a lot of them. But none of them hit the spot, so we got the executives of the company involved in brainstorming ideas which led to the form we have right now.

As development was coming to an end, there were many moments that brought us to tears playing through the game. Yes, the scenario is amazing, but it was the voices filled with emotion from our VAs, the amazing music, and the sound effects that did it.

I found this out later, but our staff members who get emotional easily all cried at the same scene. *laughs*

AA: Do you have anything you’d like to say to everyone reading this interview?

AO: The story waiting for you has unimaginable twists and turns. When you start playing, you won’t be able to stop. The mystery will feed you more clues, suspicions and doubts.

The case at the focus of the plot is a serious one, but exchanges between characters are fun and sometimes a little suspect. When you’ve finished, you will hold the story in high regard. I would like you to see the ending of each story with your own eyes.
