Pixel Ripped 1995 Takes You Back to the 90s Tomorrow in PS VR

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

We’re thrilled to announce that Pixel Ripped 1995 is coming to PS VR tomorrow! In anticipation, we decided to share more about our new co-protagonist David and explain how we designed his world to transport players back to 1995!

In the Pixel Ripped series, Dot is a video game heroine who must protect the Pixel Stone, an artifact keeping the balance between the Game World and the Human World. As the evil Cyblin Lord takes the Stone’s power for himself, Dot seeks the help of a human player to beat the villain in both realms. In Pixel Ripped 1989, Dot fought alongside the rebellious British student Nicola, but now it’s time for David Keene, an unassuming nine-year-old boy from New Jersey, to prove he’s the best player from 1995.

Virtual reality has the power to transport us to the most fascinating places, and with Pixel Ripped, we have the opportunity to travel through time. Designing David’s universe, we wanted players to feel immersed in a distinctive 90s world, seen through the eyes of an eager child. The environment should feel authentic, but we knew it needed a lot more wonder and excitement than reality could provide.

Our approach was to ground our research not only in real life places and experiences, but also in the way movies and TV shows portrayed life at the time. That means our players can relive glorious mundane moments, like fighting for the last copy of your favorite game at the rental store or beating your friend’s high scores at the arcade, while feeling like the star of a kid action movie with parents that could have come straight out of a family sitcom.

The change of setting from Nicola’s authoritarian school to David’s winter holidays with his parents spontaneously turned the story into a more intimate tale, focused on personal relationships. Unlike the satirical villains from 1989, our new characters needed depth to feel like people David cared about.

During playtests, we implemented rough versions of the dialogue, recorded by ourselves, to gather feedback about the characters. Our biggest struggle was with David’s mother, Karen, whose overprotectiveness and fear of technology set her up as one of the main antagonists. Through various rewrites, we realized that showing Karen’s quirks and vulnerabilities behind the strict mother façade helped players relate to her, even when she was making their games harder.

This process also helped us find Karen’s voice. Since I had recorded her dialogue tests, Karen used to share my Brazilian accent. This resonated with our Lead Artists, who proposed to redesign her as Latina. The team loved the idea and, by the end, we decided she would be Mexican. The team’s collaborative work, amplified by the incredibly talented voice actress Michelle Bonilla, made Karen go from just a gameplay obstacle to a vibrant, memorable character.

Designing the universe of Pixel Ripped 1995 involved a lot of research, hard work and hilarious brainstorming sessions. But above it all, it was about pouring our hearts into this story. Our amazing creative director Ana Ribeiro lets her passion for video games shine through each corner of the game and every day she inspired us to do the same. Slowly, David’s world became a mosaic of our collective childhood memories, carrying a little bit of ourselves in the most significant ways. Now, we invite you to make it your own as well!

We can’t wait to hear all of your thoughts after the game’s launch! And while you’re here, why don’t you tell us some of your favorite memories of being a gamer in the 90s?

  • The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners Hits PS VR Today

The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners Hits PS VR Today

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Like a survivor clawing his way through a horde of walkers as the church bells ring, we at Skydance Interactive have fought through impossible odds to bring you The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners on PS VR. Players can download the game now!

The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners features groundbreaking physics-based VR combat that’s been optimized for PS VR. Burying your shiv into the skull of an unsuspecting walker means you’ll have to use real force to yank it back out again. Each weapon has been finely tuned to feel uniquely weighty and deadly. This level of physical detail was crucial in order to ground you in our dire post-apocalyptic world of New Orleans.

Things aren’t all doom and gloom in the Big Easy — a glimmer of hope in the form of a massive cache of supplies hidden in the city has the remaining residents itching to get a bite. The Reserve, as it’s known, has caused tensions to mount between New Orleans’ most powerful factions. Once the Reserve is finally unearthed, it could spell disaster for the people caught in the middle of this conflict.

That’s exactly where you’ll find yourself when you put on the PS VR headset and begin your Crescent City sojourn. Playing as a drifter known as the Tourist, you will meet characters from all corners of NOLA. Many will ask for assistance, and some will greet you with hostility. How you choose to deal with them is all up to you.

See, The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners isn’t just about tense combat, physical presence, detailed environments, or a gripping story. More than anything, this game is about seeing what you’re really made of when you find yourself at the extremity of human experience.

Thanks so much to everyone who has been eagerly awaiting this release. We’re so honored to finally share our sinking city with the PlayStation VR community!

  • Gorn Bashes Onto PlayStation VR May 19

Gorn Bashes Onto PlayStation VR May 19

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

It took us a while, but we’re finally here. The Free Lives team, along with our friends at Devolver Digital and 24Bit Games, are excited to announce that Gorn is coming to PlayStation VR on May 19!

For those who don’t know, Gorn is an over-the-top gladiator game with a unique, physics-driven combat engine. With Gorn, we wanted to make something that could only work in VR, and that took advantage of all its strengths. We wanted to embrace the chaos of a game where everything is simulated and reward the player for testing the limits of the system.

    Adding Weight to the World

Because VR brings the game world so much closer to the player, we realized we couldn’t rely on pre-baked animations. Instead, we felt that interactions — especially impacts — should resolve in natural and expected ways. In order to get that right, Gorn simulates every object in the arena — even the enemies — at all times.

For interactions to resolve naturally, we also needed to make sure that objects felt like they had weight. That’s no small feat in a VR game, where the player’s range of motion makes swinging and throwing things around all the more enjoyable. To create the sensation of weight, we added wobbliness to the weapons so that players can see the impact of gravity and various other forces on their shapes. Wobbly weapons have become a signature Gorn aesthetic, and we’re pretty happy about that.

    More Trick Shots, Please

While making Gorn, we also wanted to lean into the fact that motion controls make it possible for players to move in whatever way they please. When you add fully simulated objects to an unprecedented range of motion, it means that players can set up the most incredible hit combos and trick shots.

You can push the enemy shield out of the way to get a clear shot. You can catch his weapon mid-swing. You can pick up a defeated enemy to use as a shield against another’s arrows. You can pick up a severed arm to use as a weapon. If you’re fast enough, you can even catch an arrow mid-air and return to sender.

We are still surprised by the creative combat styles that players come up with, and we love that about Gorn. It gives players the freedom to battle their enemies in weird and wonderful ways.

And that’s the best way to play Gorn. As a gladiator, you’re not just there to survive. You’re there to entertain. Take advantage of what the arena offers, experiment, and have fun!

If you don’t have the stomach for blood and gore, we’ve got you covered with Piñata Mode. Here, you are free to smack at paper mâché enemies until their heads explode with candy.

We hope that you’ll enjoy Gorn — in all its glorious chaos — when it hits PlayStation VR on May 19!

Special thanks to Devolver Digital and 24Bit Games for doing most of the legwork in getting the PlayStation VR version of the game out. Thank you also to everyone who has been messaging us with questions about the release date. We are confident that the game will have been worth the wait!

Note: Please make sure that your play space is set up and cleared properly and heed the limits of your safe playing area.

  • Vader Immortal: A Star Wars VR Series is Coming to PS VR This Summer

Vader Immortal: A Star Wars VR Series is Coming to PS VR This Summer

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

Today, I’m excited to let you know that Vader Immortal: A Star Wars VR Series is coming to PlayStation VR later this summer, and the series will be available as a complete series: all three episodes and Lightsaber Dojos will be available for purchase together, for the first time.

Back in 2016, when ILMxLAB first started talking about creating a canonical VR series that focused on Darth Vader, our goal was to tell a new and unique story about one of the most infamous villains in the galaxy. We wanted to bring you into the world of Star Wars in a way that could only be done through immersive storytelling in VR. This would put YOU right in the middle of the action to connect with amazing characters as your actions move the story forward.

Prior to Vader Immortal, I worked with the Lucasfilm Story Group to develop Star Wars stories for feature films. Now, the task was to bring the same techniques and care that we used in our movies to this new form of storytelling. Of course, quality is key for a brand like Star Wars. We pushed ourselves every day to combine high quality visuals, sound and compelling interactivity in a way not previously attempted or achieved in the VR space. To do this, we built a team of folks with varied storytelling backgrounds from film, games, and animation, brought on key collaborators like ClutchPlay, and leveraged Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 4. This, along with the help of Writer and Executive Producer David S. Goyer, helped to find our path for the project.

One of our first meetings began with a whiteboard. We listed out everything that we thought fans (and ourselves!) would most want to experience, if they were inside the Star Wars galaxy. Wielding a lightsaber was right there at the top of that list, but we knew that if we were going to do that, we had to do it right. We went through many different mechanics, both in-house and with our partners at Ninja Theory, before we got to the point where you really felt like you were parrying a blow, slicing through metal, or blocking blaster fire. We continually tested and tweaked the feedback until we got it right.

There are so many parts that grab you in the experience, but my favorite is still early in the first episode. The moment when Darth Vader first approaches you is something that can’t really be explained (but I’ll try). It’s intense when his gaze follows you and he speaks directly to you. I’ve seen some people stand up taller and get in his face, and some shrink a bit or even step back, but his presence is intimidating, and unforgettable.

Our hard work has been recognized, too, with Vader Immortal winning Best AV/VR Game at the 2020 GDC Awards, and the Producers Guild Innovation Award earlier this year.

The team is hard at work getting the story up and running for PS VR, and we can’t wait for you all to experience it and meet Vader face to face. We’ll have more to share in the coming months.

  • Editors’ Choice: Paper Beast Delivers A Thought-Provoking, Immersive World

Editors’ Choice: Paper Beast Delivers A Thought-Provoking, Immersive World

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

My first glimpse of Paper Beast came during last December’s jam-packed State of Play presentation. Nestled between the mind-bending puzzles of Superliminal and the Kingdom Hearts III expansion was a captivating trailer showcasing a first-person journey through dreamlike terrain. The video featured interesting topography and trippy visuals, but what did it all mean? What do you actually do? Despite not really “getting” what was going on, I was nonetheless captivated and made a mental note to play Paper Beast (whatever it was!) when it came to PS VR.

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FZ8zQrxNVog?feature=oembed&w=720&h=405]

Now that I’m on the other side of this unforgettable trek through digital space made real, I can’t recommend it enough. What begins as a curious jaunt through a virtual desert transforms into an eyebrow-raising adventure filled with origami creatures, surreal objects floating through the air, and hallucinatory events that defy description. Sure, I can describe a hovering piece of obsidian slicing a hole in the sky that causes alphabet letters to fall out while turtles spew mud from their bellies, but did that arrangement of words help at all?

Thankfully, these bizarre moments exist to challenge your perceptions, not just confuse you for the sake of “whoa isn’t this WEIRD?” The concept is that information-based life has formed within a digital space, and you’re a visitor caught up in a turbulent period of creation. However, this virtual genesis needs a helping hand, and this is where actual gameplay takes shape. Using a DualShock 4 or dual-wielding PS Move Controllers, you manipulate these papercraft beings — as well as plants, fabrics, and other materials — to ensure life, uh, finds a way.

Solving these environmental puzzles means pausing to soak up the scenery. What are the animals doing? Do they look stressed? Dehydrated? These moments are where Paper Beast really shines, as you’re forced to just stare and deliberately consider what is happening in the world. I frequently found myself gazing at the alien horizon and admiring not just the set piece in front of me, but how this whole data-driven ecosystem was put together. It’s easy to get lost in the world and simply… exist. I spent many moments watching paper predators stalk their prey and diamond-shaped bugs go about their business. It’s all thoughtfully, artfully structured and a treat to experience.

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iR_9PUqgLWM?feature=oembed&w=720&h=405]

Navigation follows a bit of the same dream logic that shapes the world itself. You don’t directly control your movement, but rather use a pointer to warp from spot to spot. Some may prefer more traditional 1-to-1 movement, but to me, this slightly detached experience helped cement the outsider-looking-in perspective. In dreams, it’s often hard to move precisely how and where you’d like… but then at the same time, you can magically “be” somewhere else without really processing the transition. So you’re both stuck and free at the same time, as you are in Paper Beast – dreamlike through and through.

As you play, various creatures cross your path and seemingly try to help you. One ominous, crystalline being turns out to be a life saver, and another shaggy dog (made out of shredded documents?) tries its best to dig out helpful paths. By the time the final scene played out, new friends in tow, I felt a genuine swell of emotion. We did it! But uh, what was “it?” And where are we now while the credits roll? I have my theories, but that’s the beauty of the narrative here — there isn’t one concrete answer.

The sense of alien wonder and ambiguous expression echo Another World / Out of this World, a notable adventure game from Paper Beast designer Eric Chahi. Both games have minimal to no HUD, dialog, or overt storytelling, and place the player in a strange realm. Finding your way through with so little to go on is exhilarating, and with PS VR that experience is all the more engrossing.

Paper Beast is unlike anything I’ve played in years, and well worth a look if you’re eager for a strange and unique trip through a burgeoning digital world.

  • Pistol Whip Comes to PS VR This Summer

Pistol Whip Comes to PS VR This Summer

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

You know how in action movie trailers they sync all the gunfire and fisticuff sounds to match up with the music — that’s what it feels like to play Pistol Whip, our first-of-its-kind action-rhythm FPS for PlayStation VR. You’ll become the hero of your own action movie scenes, with hand-crafted enemy engagements and environments synchronized to a breakneck soundtrack.

Since we launched on PC late last year, Pistol Whip has rocketed to become one of the highest-rated VR games available, even becoming recipient of Immersive Reality Game of the Year at the 2020 DICE Awards. We’re extremely excited to bring Pistol Whip to the PS VR family at long last this summer, so you can become the ultimate action hero badass you were meant to be.

For Pistol Whip, we took divine inspiration from the tone and stylings of god-mode action movies like John Wick and Equilibrium, as well as PS VR classics like Beat Saber and Superhot. Built for pick-up-and-play with dead simple, single-button controls, Pistol Whip is easy to play but tough to master. By default, you’ll use a single PlayStation Move controller to aim and shoot, encouraging you to brace your weapon with your offhand like a real action movie badass.

Unlike traditional rhythm games, Pistol Whip features dynamic levels instead of a static void. Comfortable, constant momentum journeys you through a variety of “scenes” inspired by action movie settings, from bank heists to airship raids. Each scene comes with three difficulties, and we have a suite of weapon personalization options and gameplay modifiers, including dual wield akimbo, to mix up the flow, challenge you, and encourage new playstyles as you chase friends and global leaderboards.

Also unlike traditional rhythm games, Pistol Whip has no line in the sand; you have complete freedom to shoot, dodge, and melee targets (pistol whip) to the rhythm you feel is right, in no specific order. You’ll earn bonus points if you take out baddies to the beat of the music, but you can play Pistol Whip entirely rhythmless like a classic arcade shooter. Whether you play tactically or musically, Pistol Whip offers unprecedented player agency.

Pistol Whip was built for virtual reality by our team of veteran VR developers to take advantage of the physicality of the tech. With Pistol Whip on PlayStation VR, you’ll use the breadth of your space to dodge bullets, avoid obstacles, and land some mean pistol whips. For the fitness-minded, Pistol Whip can also be used as a workout tool perfect for maintaining your best quarantine bod. Plus, it’s fun to watch and you look pretty cool playing it.

As a veteran VR team, we also have a keen focus on comfort. For Pistol Whip, we came up with a comfort-first locomotion design that prevents motion sickness while you play, even during the most hectic movements. With this design, you’re able to experience non-stop motion without the fear of nausea, allowing you to focus on the action and stay in rhythm. If you’re motion sensitive and have been holding out on VR action games for that reason, Pistol Whip may be right for you.

When Pistol Whip launches on PS VR this summer, the story does not end there. We’ll be continuing to support the game with content updates over the months to follow, introducing new scenes, customization options, and more to be revealed.

  • How Fireproof Games Brought Puzzle Sensation The Room to PS VR

How Fireproof Games Brought Puzzle Sensation The Room to PS VR

    Reading Time: 6 minutes

Hello players! My name’s Barry Meade from Fireproof Games, an independent games developer from Guildford, UK. Today I want to tell you about our journey from making mobile games to releasing a virtual reality game.

Way back in 2012 we released our first game, a small and creepy puzzler called The Room on mobile devices. At that time most mobile games used a virtual d-pad as a control method, which as console gamers we felt was lacking compared to a real controller such as a DualShock 4. So, we decided to design The Room using the touchscreen itself as a control method. The universe of The Room would exist just under the surface of the glass, where players directly pushed objects around the game world using their fingers.

We modeled the physics of every switch, lever, lock and clasp for realism so each object and piece of bizarre machinery you meet in The Room had weight and heft, adding a fun element to the snap and twirl of metal interlocking with metal as the player solved one conundrum after another. After listening to feedback, we know that our players loved the tactile feel of control this gave them.

So now you know we’ve made a game famous for manipulating 3D objects using your hands — why is this important? Well, because every day since 2012 we’ve known The Room could make a killer VR game. But only if it’s done right — as an entirely new game designed exclusively for VR, where we can take the tactile gameplay we’re famous for and properly translate it to new technology and hardware. And now, after more than 1.5 years in development, our new game, The Room VR: A Dark Matter, demonstrates that an idea we came up with for mobile devices in 2012 may find its purest expression on console VR in 2020.

So, am I here to tell you just how brilliant and perceptive Fireproof were eight years ago? Well, as much as that sounds appealing, no. In fact, I want to tell you the opposite. We thought The Room would translate perfectly to VR but sometimes what seems obvious on the surface is only that — obvious on the surface. I want to give you an insight into how our assumptions went stupidly wrong.

Here’s just four ways VR schooled our asses:

    1) We should totally watch people playing the game to learn their reactions to gameplay

No, no we shouldn’t. It’s hard playing a VR game for the first time especially with people you don’t know. We design The Room to be played at the players pace, lost inside an interactive world they enjoy. When people know you are watching they don’t play in their natural state or pace and they make more mistakes.

Solution: Leave players alone; ask them the annoying questions once finished.

    2) The Room is already so tactile on mobile, we’ll ace the feeling of interaction in VR

Ah ha ha ha. Fools. With Room Mobile games we could fill small spaces with detail knowing the camera will see it. In VR, the player can look anywhere at any time and they prefer to look around than focus on every surface. Secondly touchscreens are exact one-to-one feedback interfaces. By contrast, placing a hand in VR space is about modelling a feel and consistency to the controls in three dimensions. Above all, we didn’t want the players’ hands to flap uselessly about or the objects they play with to feel weightless.

Solution: We had to put a lot of effort into modelling weight and resistances and adjusting the controls to make the players hand movements feel direct, physical, and impactful.

    3) Getting stuck is bad, no wait, getting stuck is good

Puzzle games are strange beasts because human minds are strange things. Different brains interpret our puzzles differently, especially in VR, so if we estimate someone takes too long to figure a puzzle out the temptation is there to simplify, to smooth it out. This can be a Very. Bad. Call. The thing is, people like bumps. They enjoy figuring stuff out. Getting stuck and then unsticking yourself is the satisfaction players crave in the puzzles.

Solution: Is thinking ever a waste of time for a brain? Leave some hard problems hard to add some grit. Done right, the toughest challenges give the highest payoff.

    4) The camera is the best part of a VR game to play… and the worst part to make

This was a doozie. Making mobile games we used to be able to take control of the camera away from the player to guide it to all the pretty things they needed to see in the world. Move that camera all you want, Mobile didn’t care. In contrast to this if you even think of grabbing the camera from the player VR will shoot the tires out of your car. This is because with VR the player’s head is the camera, and really, tossing the player’s head around VR space is bad form, especially if they have an aversion to vomit. Coupled with the fact that our players had to see every reaction to their actions on-screen, we radically changed how we approached visualizing puzzles and the narrative sequences between them.

Solution: Make sparkly things! In other words, we did a lot of work on leading the players’ eye, making them want to look in a certain direction so they knew what was going on at all times.

These are just a few of the many, many non-obvious things we’ve been taught by working in VR. At the time we made our mistakes we thought our problems were unique but now we see they’re the same many developers go through. Believe it or not there’s a comfort in that — it meant we didn’t go too off the rails, didn’t ask too much from the software, we just had naïve expectations for how hard and counter-intuitive some aspects would be.

Now that the game is done, all we can hope is that our efforts to make The Room VR: A Dark Matter super-playable were worth it and our learnings are there on the screen for all our players to see. If you do pick up a copy, you will let us know, won’t you?

  • Inside the Surrealistic World of Paper Beast, Out Tomorrow for PS VR

Inside the Surrealistic World of Paper Beast, Out Tomorrow for PS VR

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

Dreamlike odyssey Paper Beast launches for PlayStation VR tomorrow. We had a talk with Eric Chahi, Creative Director & Game Designer about the four years he and the team at Pixel Reef spent developing the game. Read on to learn about the technology they developed specifically for this game and the challenges they encountered as they worked to make this universe feel so alive.

Where did Pixel Reef find inspiration when creating Paper Beast?

The living world, of course! The way animals move, their curiosity, the way they look at things… There is a strong bond between the land and the living. Animals have an impact and influence on their environment. Look at ants, beavers, or even simple earthworms and how they change the terrain. That’s part of the gameplay.

Another inspiration is traveling and wild areas like Sahara or Tassilia, with their majestic dunes and rocky outcrops.

Virtual reality allows you to feel that. Paper Beast plays with these spaces; you go from closed environments to open spaces. This is often shifted and surrealist by the intrusion of elements related to data, another of the game’s themes. It’s a surprising hybrid world that draws on reality to sublimate it.

    How long did development take?

    Four years.

Four years is a long time! What kinds of challenges did you encounter along the way?

The main challenge was to create a home-made physics engine that suits our needs. We wanted creatures to have fully simulated locomotion. We started by working on the sandbox for two years, which gave us the foundation of the engine.

Then, we worked on level design. We were looking for large environments with lots of landscape elements. As we progressed, we zeroed in on a balance between design and technology.

The most challenging part was to work on the game’s performance, ensuring that it could run at 60 FPS in VR. It has been a tremendous effort. We made sure there was no compromise on the quality of the game.

An important aspect of Paper Beast is the use of physics, especially to animate its creatures. Is there a particular reason you decided to go that route?

In a video game, you usually have nice predefined animations, but you can’t really manipulate a character; their posture doesn’t adapt in real-time. In Paper Beast, animals have virtual skeletons driven by physics and animated by an adaptive algorithm. With this technology, these virtual animals can move smoothly in any situation, making them feel truly “alive.”

Physics seem to go beyond gameplay, becoming part of the game’s universe. It’s quite unusual. Why this choice?

Creatures are actually calculated by the physics engine and parts of the landscape, such as sand, water, wind… even moving paper. It’s part of the narrative.

For example, we used physics to create data and paper storms: powerful aerial phenomenons. It creates a flow and coherence throughout the game, from the gameplay to the environment. Like looking at a raging sea in the real world — beauty comes from physics!

There is no dialogue in the game, yet the player lives a story. Is this a form of narration that you had already explored in Another World / Out of This World?

Absolutely, but the story is told differently, by creatures’ behavior and big changes happening in this world. Paper Beast is set up in a kind of crazy world. It gives the freedom of imagination to the player; in hindsight, I realize it’s a deep breath in a world overwhelmed by the stream of information. During the creative process, I had strong surrealistic visions that I could hardly describe with words. The team was very in phase with this vision. We were in sync with Pascal Lefort, our Artistic Director and 3D artist. The incredible skies in Paper Beast — it’s him. Floriane and Roly had total freedom on the audio and musical ambiance. The result is very emotional, and even though I played the game hundreds of times, I still happen to have tears in my eyes… but nobody knows, because I’m wearing a VR headset.

What advice would you give to Paper Beast players?

    • Use a good audio headset and make sure the volume is high enough to be totally immersed in the universe of Paper Beast.
    • This adventure is an odyssey about emotion and discovery vertigo. You are about to discover a brand new world with strange but logical rules. Pay close attention to the environments and emergent behaviors.
    • The sandbox is a place for experimentation. Enjoy it from the “god mode” view where you will feel like a giant. You can terraform the terrain and observe creatures’ behavior.
    • Don’t forget the linkers! You can bond creatures to each other and create some funny situations.

  • Asymmetrical Heist Co-op Meets PS VR with Covert, Out Now

Asymmetrical Heist Co-op Meets PS VR with Covert, Out Now

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

Hi everybody! My name is Jonathan Hawkins, and I’m the founder and creative director at White Elk. This week we launched Covert for PS VR, and we are excited to not only share a new VR game with you but also help you share VR with your friends and family!

Covert is a unique co-op game that pairs the PS VR with a smartphone or tablet. The player in VR is a thief; their job is to sneak through enemy bases to complete different mission objectives. The mobile player is a hacker; they guide the VR player through these secure locations by using their birds-eye view perspective; they can see where guards are located, and they can crack safes, and hack into computers! They connect to the VR player through our free companion app (available for all the most recent iOS and Android mobile devices.)

The game features eight unique missions, six hours of gameplay, and an engaging story filled with a cast of colorful characters. Your guide on this journey is Stacy, a gadget genius. She is the last known member of the infamous League of Thieves, a world-famous thieves guild, that steals from the rich and gives to the poor. They have been double-crossed by their old hacker, who put the League’s former leader and master thief, James Bourdain, in jail. Stacy recruits you and your friend to join the League of Thieves, to get revenge and pull off the heist of the century!

After working on Eclipse: Edge of Light, which is a game about being alone in an alien world, I wanted to create something social. I noticed that when I shared VR with my family and friends, everybody wanted to try it out, but there weren’t a lot of games that allowed you to have a shared experience with the person in VR. I wanted to create a VR game that I could play together with my wife. So, I challenged myself and the team at White Elk to create something unique and explore a brand-new gaming genre.

This proved to be quite the challenge as there wasn’t anything like this ever created before. A lot of the different ideas, mechanics, and scenarios that we tried out didn’t work, but we learned from those failures. Ultimately, we had to focus on creating simple communication tools between the VR and mobile players so they could smoothly play the game in the same room or across the country.

For example, the hacker can guide the thief through the level by double-tapping on the map to create markers that the thief can see in the world. They can tap on hackable doors and devices to draw the thief’s attention. A fun “blind gadget ” also provides them a way to give the VR player a “Get Out of Jail Free ” card, so they can escape tricky situations when facing multiple enemy guards.

Once we had created these tools, it was a lot easier for us to design many different fun scenarios. I can’t count how many times I heard, “No, the other left. ” Communication is hard!

Ultimately, I feel we were able to overcome these challenges and accomplish our goal of creating a social VR game. We have received many emails and messages from people who had a fantastic time sharing Covert with their kids, parents and significant others.

It’s a fun couch co-op game, where you can take turns passing the PSVR back and forth, or reconnect with an old friend in a different city. My wife and I had a great time playing, and I hope you all do too! 🙂

    Thanks!
    -Jonathan Hawkins

  • Discover the Meditative World of Separation This Week in PS VR

Discover the Meditative World of Separation This Week in PS VR

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

Hello. I’m a solo indie game developer about to release my first PlayStation game, Separation, an ambient adventure launching this Wednesday on PS VR. I’d like to take this opportunity to reveal the inspiration behind the game, along with some of the challenges I faced developing it.

Firstly, you may be wondering exactly what I mean by ‘ambient adventure.’ I’ve never felt comfortable with the term ‘walking simulator’ and reasoned that an equivalent to the musical genres of ‘ambient’ or ‘downtempo’ also existed in games. Separation’s gameplay is relaxed — exploration based with some puzzle elements, and no time pressure. Atmosphere and ambience are emphasized, details kept deliberately sparse. My mood board was heavy on Fumito Ueda’s PS2 classic Ico and the 19th-century German Romantic landscape painter, Caspar David Friedrich (whose works often evoke a sense of epic desolation). I wanted to bring that feeling to VR, so I could lose myself in it. I had personal reasons for doing so.

Since losing my father in 2010 I have struggled with episodes of depression. I wanted to create a space where I could explore the feelings of emptiness and loss, perhaps finding some meaning in reflection. Hopefully, other people will be able to relate to that too. There is very little narrative – it’s a symbolic journey and you are free to make up your own conclusions about the experience. I feel VR is particularly suited to this end. The immersion reinforces the player’s experience of isolation, providing an experience of solitude that is increasingly rare in today’s hyper-connected world.

Of course, game development is seldom straightforward. I had never made a game in VR before and my limited resources meant I would spend long months struggling with technical issues beyond my expertise, trying to solve problems that normally require a team to effectively navigate. The journey took me well beyond my comfort zone, but I persevered, even as the game went twice, three times over its development schedule. I had a lot to learn and spent much of the time simply trying to achieve a stable framerate and shaders that rendered without issue in VR.

When funds ran out, I took on part time jobs to pay the rent. I composed and recorded the soundtrack at night, headphones on, sitting at the kitchen table after my family had gone to bed. “You will get there in the end,” gamedev friends told me at the local meetup in York, but it was hard not to feel that life was passing me by during the four long years of solo work on the game.

It’s hard to take a break or go through illness when there’s nobody else to carry things forward in your absence. Despite many setbacks, I did make progress and as the game neared completion and I wandered the desolate landscapes of my imagination, I began to feel a sense of peace and acceptance in the virtual world I had made solid.

So, where does this lead? I hope players will find something worth exploring, even if it’s just to watch the virtual sun setting behind those desolate rocks, the light fading on the water to an ambient soundtrack. I’ve learned much, and hopefully if the game is well received, I’ll get the chance to continue building upon it, perhaps with a small team. I hope at the end of it all, somebody will discover their own special place in Separation.

  • Dive Into Freediver: Triton Down Extended Cut, Out for PS VR Today

Dive Into Freediver: Triton Down Extended Cut, Out for PS VR Today

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Time to take a deep breath and take the plunge: we’re pleased to announce that the Extended Cut of our submersive adventure VR game, Freediver: Triton Down, is available now for $14.99 USD! Check out our new trailer above.

The original cut of Freediver: Triton Down was released on PC VR in May 2019; from the intense underwater escape from a sinking ship, to its gesture-based swimming mechanic, to its nomination for VR Game of the Year, it took players by surprise. Since then, we’ve heard your requests for Freediver on PS VR, and are now excited to share the new Extended Cut with the PlayStation community!

Just what does “Extended Cut” mean? While reshaping Freediver: Triton Down for console VR, we had the opportunity to build on what made the original game great, while exploring some of the wild ideas that still kept us up at night.

For us, that meant turning the lights out, and the tension up. (Yes, even more than the original.) All-new levels on the ship have been added and plunged into darkness, introducing an extra layer of challenge to the many puzzles you’ll encounter. To help you swim through the murk, we’ve also added a handy flashlight: its beam is powerful, but there are some dangers in the depths that only a cool head and lightning reflexes will save you from.

Above all that, we listened to our number one request from the community and expanded the Sci-Fi-inspired story of Freediver: Triton Down even further. The capsized Triton is littered with lost audio logs of the crewmembers’ final days aboard. Are their fates sealed? What caused the rogue wave that sent the Triton plummeting to the ocean floor? And who — or what — is the mysterious specimen named Emi?

We had a blast returning to the uncertain underwater world of Freediver: Triton Down, and we hope you love escaping the Triton disaster as much as we loved brewing it up. So grab your Move Controllers, get those swimming arms ready, and most of all: #DontForgetToBreathe.
