  • A closer look at the deep combat, huge world, and all-star cast of Marvel’s Iron Man VR

A closer look at the deep combat, huge world, and all-star cast of Marvel’s Iron Man VR

    Reading Time: 6 minutes

Given that we are only one week away from the release of Marvel’s Iron Man VR, I thought it would be fun to offer an unprecedented look at what you can expect from the full game.

Judging by the community’s incredible response to the free demo on PlayStation Store, people loved the game’s flight and combat controls, three-dimensional HUD and built-for-VR cinematics. The lengthy demo also prompted many to ask, “Wait, just how big will the full release be?” Read on to learn more!

The ultimate Iron Man virtual reality game

As a PlayStation VR enthusiast, I know many of you want big VR-only games, not just demos or short experiences. That’s why we built Marvel’s Iron Man VR as a robust PlayStation VR-exclusive Iron Man action game with a deeply meaningful Tony Stark story. We initially thought the campaign would span 4-5 hours, but based on recent playtest data, we’re pleasantly surprised that average playtimes are now roughly double that!

    Big & open environments

One of the biggest challenges my colleagues at Camouflaj faced was creating huge, great looking environments to fly around at top speeds. This required us to build environments many times the size of our first game, République. (For comparison’s sake, you can fit twenty-three entire world instances of République into the initial Malibu environment.)

Getting texture streaming to keep pace with Iron Man’s super speed was a complex technical hurdle, but we stopped at nothing to ensure players can fly around beautifully rendered Marvel landscapes including (but not limited to):

    S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier

It was a blast to partner with Marvel on building a fully realized S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier to fly in and outside of. The level of detail our artists put into this space I think demonstrates the labor of love.

    Shanghai

Our most ambitious environment, Shanghai, gives players the unique sensation of flying through a high density downtown with plenty of tall buildings to weave in between. We worked closely with Marvel Games’ VP & Head of Creative, Bill Rosemann and Creative Director, Tim Tsang, to craft a storyline that puts Stark Tower in the thick of the action and drama.

    Stark facility

One of my favorite environments is this decommissioned Stark Industries plant. Despite being a relatively compact space (it only fits three entire République worlds), it’s a great environment to play one of our Combat Challenges in.

There are, of course, other environments in the final game that I can’t wait for you to see for yourself in VR.

    Depth of combat

For those of you who discovered the unlockable Combat Challenge in the demo, you know the game’s moment-to-moment combat has loads of depth.

Throughout our story-driven campaign, we layer on core mechanics in hopes that, by the final cinematic, you feel so in tune with the controls that you feel like you’ve fused together with the Impulse Armor. Here’s a high-level overview of some of our baseline mechanics:

    Boost

We heard how much you love boosting at high speeds, so just a few weeks ago, we further increased the frequency at which you can boost in the full game. Buckle up!

    Rocket Punch

My favorite mechanic. I can’t get enough of punching enemies with a one-two-three hit combo and then finishing them off with a Repulsor Blast or auxiliary weapon.

    Auxiliary weapon

By spending Research Points at the Armor Station, you can unlock powerful auxiliary weapons that fire out of your gauntlets. When you play the full game, please do me a big favor and check out the incredible detail artist Chris Foster and animator Benjamin Meals put into each weapon. I can’t tell you how cool it is to see those weapons emerge from your forearms in VR.

    Ground Pound

The rough-and-tumble cousin of Rocket Punch, Ground Pound allows players to descend on enemies at furious speeds. Mastering Ground Pound takes some practice, but once you do, you will be a powerful force on both horizontal and vertical planes!

    Unibeam

Eagle-eyed players noticed blasting enemies charges the Unibeam meter. Once it’s fully charged, you can fire a mighty Unibeam blast out of Iron Man’s chest. The trick, however, is determining the optimal time to trigger it…

There are more mechanics I have yet to touch on, but I hope that gives you a better idea of how much love and depth we put into the moment-to-moment action of Marvel’s Iron Man VR. The true test will be if you can complete the tough-as-nails optional mission that unlocks once you’ve completed the game. (It’s so challenging in fact, that I have yet to complete it…)

    Tony’s Garage & Armor Station

One of the great things about Marvel is how it pairs great action with relatable character drama. This is why Marvel’s Iron Man VR features Iron Man action moments intertwined with a personal story about Tony Stark struggles with his worst enemy: himself.

Without encroaching into spoiler territory, let’s just say that we’ve made arming the Impulse Armor with weapons part of Tony’s journey to overcome his past.

One of my favorite things to do is step up to the Armor Station, see the Impulse Armor in all its glory, and then upgrade it with new augments and auxiliary weapons. This is all performed via an intuitive 3D interface, and looks and sounds just as you would imagine it would be for Tony Stark himself. I just can’t get enough of it!

When you’re not tinkering with the Impulse Armor, try roaming around Tony’s garage, squeeze in a workout, give Pepper a call, or maybe listen to our in-fiction podcast series hosted by a close(ish) family member of Tony Stark…

    An eclectic cast of characters

Since the beginning of development, lead writer Brendan Murphy and I knew we wanted to tell a personal story about Tony Stark that leveraged the unique storytelling strengths of PlayStation VR. We wanted to put players in the shoes of Tony and bring them up-close-and-personal with classic Marvel characters such as Pepper Potts, Nick Fury and FRIDAY (as well as a host of other characters we have yet to reveal).

To deepen the sense of immersion, we’ve crafted a number of campaign beats that allow you to physically interact with these characters and form a stronger bond.

    VR-powered interactions

I’m certain many of you have heard that developing VR games can be extremely challenging, and guess what? It’s absolutely true…

With traditional game development, I often say that its rulebook is the size of a thick old phonebook. With virtual reality being a relatively new medium, however, its rulebook is more akin to a passport: it’s thin, many pages have yet to be filled in, and — to take the analogy even further — it shows you where you can go but contains little information about how to actually get there.

During the development of Marvel’s Iron Man VR, we were amazed at how much VR-powered interactions added to the sense of immersion — moments such as extinguishing an engine fire or rescuing Pepper from a burning jet. Although building these moments require lots of time and resources, we had a blast sprinkling them throughout the main campaign.

    Thrust Door

Here’s one example from our Helicarrier campaign mission: grab a heavy door with your left gauntlet and then thrust backwards with your right! The team iterated heavily on this Super Hero Action to give it a real sense of weight.

    All-Star Cast

For those of you who attended the Marvel Games panels at San Diego and New York Comic Con last year, you got to hear directly from the voices of Tony Stark (Josh Keaton) and Ghost (Chantelle Barry).

Today I’m pleased to announce a few additional cast members including Leila Birch (FRIDAY), Ike Amadi (Nick Fury), and the ever-prolific Jennifer Hale (Pepper Potts). Every actor did an incredible job providing an authentic take on these classic characters while also lending them a unique voice.

We’re also blessed to have long-time collaborators Dwight Schultz as well as Matt Mercer and Leonardo Nam rounding out the main cast. (I just wish I could tell you which characters they are bringing to life…)

    One week ’til lift off

It’s hard to believe it but Marvel’s Iron Man VR releases next week on July 3! Digital pre-orders are now available on the PS Store for both Standard and Digital-Deluxe versions, and both include some pre-order bonuses

I’ll be back next week for one more post leading into launch.

Until then, back to the Garage!

  • Marvel‘s Iron Man VR –„Herumtüfteln wie Tony Stark“

Marvel‘s Iron Man VR –„Herumtüfteln wie Tony Stark“

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

Hallo zusammen!

      • 4 „Deluxe Edition“-Benutzerdecor-Rüstungen (Goldener Avenger, Black Centurion, Sun Stinger, Stealth)
      • Marvel‘s Iron Man VR – Digital Deluxe Soundtrack
      • „Iron Man Digital Deluxe Edition“-Design für PS4™
    • Vorbestellung:
      • 4 Benutzerdecor-Rüstungen (Ursprung, Vintage, Silver Centurion, Ultraviolett)
      • Marvel‘s Iron Man VR – Dynamisches PS4™-Design

Zwei PlayStation Move-Motion-Controller erforderlich. Separat erhältlich.

  • Behind the Scenes: Tinker on the Impulse Armor in Tony’s garage in Marvel’s Iron Man VR

Behind the Scenes: Tinker on the Impulse Armor in Tony’s garage in Marvel’s Iron Man VR

    Reading Time: 5 minutes

Hi everyone! My name is Yara Abou Samra and I am a producer at Camouflaj working on Marvel’s Iron Man VR. I’m looking forward to the game’s July 3 release date when you all can suit up as Iron Man and revel in this PlayStation VR* exclusive game. In the meantime, please let me tell you about one aspect of the game we haven’t spoken about: Tony Stark’s garage and what you can do in it!

Early on in development, the team at Camouflaj knew that bringing the iconic garage into virtual reality would be essential. We knew it had to be a place where players could get the full-fantasy of the inventor, Tony Stark. We wanted the garage to empower players to tinker with and upgrade their suit and get more powerful as they got deeper into the campaign, looking stylish along the way.

As many of you know, we collaborated with legendary Marvel artist, Adi Granov, and Marvel Games Creative Director Tim Tsang to design our signature Impulse Armor. Once the armor was designed, our next challenge was ensuring players will actually get to see the iconic armor in more detail. Thankfully, the garage’s Armor Station was the perfect location for players to get a third-person perspective on the armor.

After you’ve caught the Stark Jet, as seen in the Marvel’s Iron Man VR PS Store Demo, you will unlock the garage, be able to get up close to the Impulse Armor, and make modifications including swapping in Repulsor types, new Auxiliary weapons, Arc Reactors and Thrusters. By completing missions and progressing deeper into the campaign, you will unlock Research Points which allow you to do deeper customizations.

One of the things that makes Marvel’s Iron Man VR so fun is the amount of freedom you have in flight and combat. You can fly with one hand, while blasting enemies with the other. At the Armor Station, you can attach homing missiles on your left hand and cluster bombs on your right with the Research points that you’ve obtained. You can even customize two unique loadouts to suit different play styles, which is a feature much beloved by our most hardcore players here at Camouflaj. One of my favorite loadouts is pairing the powerful Anti-Armor Missiles with the shotgun-like Scatter Shot, allowing you to deal heavy damage to enemies both at a distance, and at point blank.

In addition to gameplay-driven upgrades, you can also unlock incredible-looking Armor Custom Decos to look awesome while you take on Tony’s deadliest foes. With the base game, pre-order bonus and the Digital Deluxe Edition, there are 16 decos in total (seven with the base game, one from playing the demo, four if you purchase the digital deluxe edition, and if you pre-order any edition you will receive four). They are ranging from the “Vintage” deco, to my personal favorite, the “Hornet” deco:

One of our character artists here at Camouflaj, Chris Foster, crafted each one of these decos. He puts his heart and soul into each of these, taking extra care to add various details such as brushed metal, carbon fiber, and chrome so that every deco looks and feels unique.

We’ve been blown away by how passionate testers on the game have been about Custom Decos, and it puts a big smile on my face.

You can pre-order or purchase the Digital Deluxe Edition to get Custom Decos, such as the Stealth Armor or Silver Centurion. You can also unlock the exclusive Molten Lava deco by downloading and playing the free demo. Once you first visit the garage in the full game, you will be able to give it a go!

Digital Deluxe Edition: $49.99 USD MSRP/$59.99 CAD MSRP (Digital only)

    Includes:

    • Marvel’s Iron Man VR Game
    • 4 Deluxe Edition Deco Armors (Golden Avenger, Black Centurion, Sun Stinger, Stealth Armor)
    • 12 Research Points – Research Points are gained by analyzing combat data from Iron Man’s performance in the field. This research and analysis allows Friday to develop new technology (weapons and augments) for the Impulse Suit. Use these Research Points to unlock some weapons and augments early and customize to play style.
    • Marvel’s Iron Man VR Digital Deluxe Soundtrack
    • Digital Deluxe Edition Iron Man PS4 Theme

    • Pre-Order:
      • 4 Custom Armor Decos (Origin Armor, Vintage Armor, Silver Centurion Armor, & Ultraviolet Armor)
      • Marvel’s Iron Man VR Dynamic PS4 theme

Tony’s garage is a place where players can take some time to relax, acquire important information, tinker with the Iron Man armor, and plot their next move.

It’s thrilling seeing the last bits of polish going into the missions, cinematics, and garage as we get closer to the game’s July 3 release date. I can’t wait to see what loadouts you all build, and how cool you’ll look playing around, blasting enemies, and saving the world.

Until then, back to the garage!

  • Firewall Zero Hour bekommt eine neue Saison— Operation: Syndicate

Firewall Zero Hour bekommt eine neue Saison— Operation: Syndicate

    Reading Time: 5 minutes

  • Out tomorrow: Firewall Zero Hour’s new season — Operation: Syndicate

Out tomorrow: Firewall Zero Hour’s new season — Operation: Syndicate

    Reading Time: 5 minutes

Hi all! Damoun Shabestari (aka Shabs) here, Game Director at First Contact Entertainment — developers behind Firewall Zero Hour*, the team-based multiplayer shooter exclusive to PS VR.

It’s been an absolute blast for myself and our devs to witness the sheer number of you joining the game this year! We welcomed tons of new players into the game when Firewall Zero Hour was offered as a free game to PlayStation Plus members during February 2020, right at the same time the game’s fourth season, Operation: Black Dawn, went live.

Today we’re excited to keep that momentum rolling for the launch of Firewall Zero Hour’s fifth season, Operation: Syndicate! Below you’ll find a rundown on everything you’ll see in-game this season, beginning tomorrow.

    New Map

Operation: Syndicate launches with a brand new map, Blacksite, available for free for all players who have access to Firewall Zero Hour. Set at the golden hour of sunset, players will find themselves in the Blacksite — the sector of a Middle Eastern city with a heavy military presence. Work with your teammates to scope out the apartment interiors, creep around alleyways, and fight through the open air marketplace to protect (or defend) the data on the laptop! You’ll utilize an array of cover points across the map, from field tents to sandbagged rooftops. And beware of those tight engagement zones! Players will also find themselves immediately immersed in the Blacksite map scene, as it becomes the Lobby environment during Operation: Syndicate.

    New Contractor

This season introduces a brand new Contractor: Lucia Gallo, better known by her hacker handle — Luna. Born in Italy, Luna’s studies were predominantly focused on computer science and combating cyberterrorism. Her masterful abilities lead to her being hired to spearhead a newly established cyber security agency. At the same time, she took up weapon and combat training to match her abilities as a hacker–becoming the perfect combo hire. Luna’s Skill of “Backtrace” is very unique: players can see the outline of all signal jammers in the world for 4 seconds, helping players locate and destroy the equipment in time. This Skill is the perfect antidote for even the sneakiest jammer placements. Luna and her Skill are only available to Operation: Syndicate Op Pass holders**.

    New Cosmetic Rewards

There are over 24 new cosmetic Rewards available this season. Upon completion of Missions, a variety of different trinkets, face paints, and camo skins can be equipped by players. In addition to Free Mission Rewards, Op Pass holders have access to Premium and Bonus Mission Rewards.

    New Weapon

Arriving in Operation: Syndicate is a brand new weapon, the Custom ZS, available to all players upon completion of the Free Mission in the first week. The Custom ZS is a full auto, short-range sub-machine gun — perfect for the short and medium-range engagement zones found in Operation: Syndicate’s new map, Blacksite.

    New Legendary Weapon Skin

The Legendary Weapon Skin of Operation: Black Dawn is Luna’s HZU — available to Op Pass holders who complete all Free, Premium and Bonus Missions in Operation: Syndicate (a total of 24 Missions) and redeemed for 250,000 Crypto.

Reminder: Op Pass and Hack Key Bundles

The Syndicate Op Pass allows players access to 16 additional Mission cosmetic Rewards, plus access to the new Contractor Luna, and the ability to unlock the Legendary Weapon Skin, Luna’s HZU after completion of all 24 Missions this season. Hack Keys can be used to instantly complete any Operational Mission and receive its cosmetic Reward — a great option for players who don’t have as much time to play as they would like. If you have any Hack Keys left over from last season (Operation: Black Dawn), you can use them on Missions this season (Operation: Syndicate).

    • Firewall Zero Hour – Syndicate Op Pass + 25 Hack Keys ($24.99 USD)
    • Firewall Zero Hour – Syndicate Op Pass + 5 Hack Keys ($9.99 USD)
    • Firewall Zero Hour – Syndicate Op Pass + 1 Hack Key ($5.99 USD)
    • Firewall Zero Hour – 5 Hack Keys Pack ($4.99 USD)

  • Pistol Whip erscheint auf PS VR am 28. Juli

Pistol Whip erscheint auf PS VR am 28. Juli

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

  • Pistol Whip hits PS VR July 28

Pistol Whip hits PS VR July 28

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Let’s get straight to the good news: We’re excited to announce today that Pistol Whip will launch on PS VR July 28 with its current 15-scene soundtrack, including fan-favourite DLC scenes like Full Throttle and the brand-spanking new Religion.

As we built out the earliest prototypes for Pistol Whip, our first-of-its-kind action/rhythm FPS, we imagined the game timed entirely to the John Wick soundtrack. So when we found Kannibalen Records, a music label (and Canadian indie like us) known for their hardcore but cinematic electronic sound, it was love at first listen. This is the music of action movies — the music of Pistol Whip.

    Black Magic

Make sure to turn sound ON for the gifs below!

Black Magic was the first Kannibalen track we put in the game, and we instantly knew it fit our John Wick vibe. A hard, driving bassline and an Army of Darkness “Come Get Some” sample hits you in the face with the energy of an unstoppable action hero.

For most Pistol Whip tracks, we made some custom edits to better suit the song to the game, cutting out slower tempos, dead zones, and anything we didn’t feel fit the action hero style. For Black Magic, we edited the beginning to start with an instrumental thrumming that gave us the atmosphere of a sprawling Chinatown — what would become our first Pistol Whip scene setting.

Once we had the song and setting, the design team would listen on repeat and begin to map out the structure and motifs of the music, creating the building blocks of the level. Different sounds in the music would infer different types of enemy engagements and region sizes; quieter zones translated to alleyways with long-range engagements, while busier areas of the music encouraged flurries of enemies in all directions.

From there, the music was brought into the game engine and designers could begin adding additional flourishes to the map, such as obstacles or animations. Everything is hand-placed and synced to each beat of the music, with enemy behaviours and pathing manually set for that Time Crisis-inspired arcade style. Obstacles can be used to force you to dodge, weave, and dance; to guide you in a certain direction; or to simply introduce more distractions during a gunfight.

As the music builds in Black Magic, we layer in more enemies on each beat, increasing the pacing of their spawns until a pre-drop climax challenges you with a wall of death. Finally, on the moment before the drop, an armoured enemy appears that can be pistol whipped perfectly to the beat.

And that’s only some of what goes into just a single Pistol Whip scene. We’ll be launching on PS VR with 15 handcrafted scenes and even more to come in the months to follow. Not just a rhythm game, Pistol Whip is an action FPS driven by music, with elaborate scenes and unique environments for you to fight your way through. Sync up to the music and become the ultimate action hero badass when Pistol Whip launches on PlayStation VR July 28.

  • Traffic Jams brings traffic chaos to PS VR this September

Traffic Jams brings traffic chaos to PS VR this September

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

Hey everyone! I’m TamTu, community manager at Vertigo Games and today I have some exciting news to share with PS VR fans. After surviving the desert landscapes of the zombie apocalypse in Arizona Sunshine, exploring conquest and wargaming in Skyworld, and solving mind-bending puzzles in A Fisherman’s Tale, we’re announcing an all-new PS VR game: bring rhythm to traffic chaos in Traffic Jams!

Traffic Jams is a tongue-in-cheek VR game developed by our amazingly talented friends at Little Chicken Game Studio that we are bringing to PS VR in September of this year.

In the world of Traffic Jams all traffic lights have gone out and you are the only one who can keep traffic flowing in the face of outrageous events and flagrant road rage. Starting out on a quiet corner in a small town, traffic control job offers soon start pouring in from iconic cities around the globe. Using intuitive VR controls on dual PS Move controllers, it’s up to you to guide rude pedestrians, impatient drivers, and the occasional meteorite along before road rage strikes. Sound easy? Think again! This chaotic VR game is full of monsters, (un)natural disasters, and something called… ‘cheese bowling’?

And that’s not all, because aside from the beefy single player career mode we’re proud to reveal Traffic Jams will sport a couch party mode that will let you share the fun of VR with up to four friends, locally, on mobile devices!

In Traffic Jams, you’ll be taken under the wing of Dennis, the self-proclaimed world’s best traffic controller… EVER!!! He comes from a place called Jam City, which gets its name from its many flash mobs and packed intersections. Armed with dreams of superstardom, a sassy attitude and fresh dance moves, he has taken it upon himself to teach you the ropes of traffic controlling (although between you and me, he’d rather be dancing). If you give him a chance, he’ll take you on a jam-packed global adventure to become the Ultimate Traffic Showman.

We hope to see you out on the crossroads this September on PS VR.

  • Behind the Scenes: Creating Iron Man in VR

Behind the Scenes: Creating Iron Man in VR

    Reading Time: 5 minutes

Hello, this is Aaron Whiting of Seattle-based Camouflaj. I have the honor of being the lead producer on Marvel’s Iron Man VR, coming July 3 exclusively to PlayStation VR.

I previously worked at Camouflaj on its first release, République, before I left to try my hand at a larger local game studio. During the interim years away from Camouflaj, I heard whispers from my former coworkers that the team was working on something incredibly exciting and ambitious for VR. It was around then that studio founder, Ryan Payton, put me in a headlock and asked me if I’d be interested in coming back to Camouflaj to help produce the game. After I fixed my hair, I scheduled a time to stop by the studio and check out their prototype for Marvel’s Iron Man VR.

Within seconds of putting the VR headset on, I got chills. I looked down at my body, saw the iconic red and gold armor, and thought to myself, “Holy crap, I am Iron Man!” From there I pointed the motion controls towards the ground, pulled the triggers and lifted into the air. I then thought to myself, “How does Iron Man fly forward?”, so I placed the controllers at my sides, pointed my palms back, and began to surge forward. Despite the crude greybox representation of Shanghai, it felt great to zip through the city at high speeds and feel the thrill of flight. I soared above the metropolis and threaded the needle between tight corridors. I clearly remember saying aloud, “You guys have done it! We’ve nailed flying in VR.”

After spending about 20 minutes flying around grinning from ear to ear, Ryan asked me, “Do you wanna shoot some stuff?” Of course I said yes. As with flight, I thought, “How does Iron Man shoot?” I extended my arm out, pointed my palm at a target, pushed the Repulsor button and fired a shot. I began striking Iron Man poses like I was in a photoshoot and blasted all the enemies around me. “How about coming back to Camouflaj and helping us produce this game?” Ryan asked. The rest is history.

When I rejoined Camouflaj, the challenge of creating a great prototype was behind us, so our focus shifted towards developing the full game. We aligned the team around building a world not only about Iron Man, but also about his larger-than-life civilian persona, Tony Stark.

One thing Ryan struggled with early on was solving the problem of allowing VR players to not only feel like Iron Man but also see him. Due to the first-person nature of VR, we knew players wanted to embody Tony Stark, but we all worried about those moments that players would want to see Tony be Tony. We experimented with various solutions, including Ryan’s boneheaded idea (his words, not mine) to have the player not be Tony, but play as his up-and-coming protege. Fortunately, our friends at Marvel pushed back on that idea, and they were right — fans want to be Iron Man, not be standing next to him.

Thankfully, our lead writer, Brendan Murphy, came up with a brilliant solution. Borrowing a thread from a recent run of Marvel’s Iron Man comics, we introduced an additional AI character based on Tony’s personality. Thus, “AI Tony” was born. He’s smart, witty, and helps you upgrade your suit. Suddenly, we had the best of both worlds—players got to not only see Tony but to be him! On top of that, can you think of any superhero that would enjoy his own company more than Tony Stark?

People want to fly around and be super heroic like Iron Man, but they also want to live out the fantasy of being the larger-than-life billionaire, Tony Stark. Early in development we tossed around many different ideas, but when the dust settled, we had a handful of key Tony Stark-related features that fed back into our core gameplay:

    • Tinker in Tony’s garage
    • Come face-to-face with iconic Marvel characters Nick Fury, Pepper Potts & Friday
    • Explore classic Iron Man environments including Tony’s Malibu mansion, a S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier, ROXXON Corporation, and various Stark Industries locales

As I reminisce about the production of Marvel’s Iron Man VR, we always knew that the game needed to feel super heroic. About a year into production, we thought we nailed it with our flying and shooting mechanics, but we couldn’t shake the feeling that something was missing. Marvel agreed.

This realization occurred right around the time we were wrapping up work on our vertical slice, which included a mission where Iron Man rescues a jet in mid-flight. It was around this time the team discovered the missing puzzle piece: interactive “Super Hero Actions.” In record time, we added “Super Hero Actions” to the mission that enabled players to do heroic things such as extinguish an engine fire, repair a damaged wing, and pull down the jet’s landing gear. From a production perspective, these moments terrified me — they are one-off moments that were extremely expensive and time consuming to build, but I couldn’t deny that they were our ticket to making Marvel’s Iron Man VR evolve from “good” to “great.”

If you’re curious about how those Super Hero Actions deliver the Super Hero fantasy, you’ll be able to experience them first-hand in the demo for Marvel’s Iron Man VR, available at PlayStation Store now. It’s a small taste of what’s to come in the rest of the game, which includes many more VR-enabled heroic actions.

In the closing moments of development, I often think about why I returned to Camouflaj to work on Marvel’s Iron Man VR. Naturally I wanted to help the team achieve their goal of building a great Iron Man experience for virtual reality, but I also wanted to leverage the unique strengths of PS VR to tell an important and meaningful story starring Tony Stark. We put the player in Tony’s shoes and have them face his demons. Those moments really stand out for me as a player, and I can’t wait for you to experience them when the game releases on July 3.

Blood & Truth: How to Script a PS VR Blockbuster

    Reading Time: 5 minutes

I’m Colin Harvey, Lead Writer on London Studio’s ode to action cinema, Blood and Truth. In the past I’ve worked across different media such as books, comics and audio.

My games work includes writing and narrative design for Rebellion’s Sniper Elite 4, as well as uncredited work on The Getaway 2 and the ‘lost classic’ Eight Days, both for Sony. I even have a PhD in video game storytelling (yes, really).

I got the gig on Blood and Truth because I’m fascinated by the possibilities of VR, both for the challenge of developing a storytelling language for this new medium and to work with actors on the mo-cap stage.

As this week’s marks the game’s first anniversary, I wanted to share with you some of those experiences. If you’re an aspiring writer or interested in learning more about the medium, this hopefully will shed some light on the work that goes into crafting a first person PS VR title.

Blood & Truth: How to Script a PS VR Blockbuster

Do… expect to join the party late

I joined the game part way through development. This is pretty common in terms of game writing. This can be a nightmare as you’re having to make a story work with pre-existing characters, locations and missions, but in the case of London Studio, there were loads of clever people at different levels of the organisation willing it to succeed. Working within that tight remit, I was given a lot of agency to work up the story.

Don’t… be afraid to rework the story structure (if you can)

Our remit was ‘Be the Action Hero’, so we knew we wanted to take the player and place them in the midst of action sequences familiar from Hollywood movies. This meant building an equally thrilling story that could facilitate these sequences. All the missions were already designed [by the time I joined the project], but, climax aside, there was some flexibility about playing with the order [they appeared in] for maximum impact.

Do… add your own spin on your chosen genre

We wanted to reference action cinema greats, but obviously make our own mark on the genre.

We gave our characters a unique spin so they weren’t stereotypes, giving them these interesting back stories. As a result, we ended up with a very diverse cast. [As an example, we had] really interesting, positive female role models in this story. The kid sister is the brains of the operation, you’ve got the indomitable mum character. How often do you see a mum in videogames?

Don’t… treat narrative and gameplay as two separate development pillars

You establish the narrative which sets up the gameplay sequence. That then dovetails nicely into the next narrative scene, and so on. Do it right and you’re progressing the story within those gameplay sections. The comparison I always use for people who don’t play games is it’s like a musical: you’d have some story, then a song, then some story. The best musicals move the plot along within the song.

Do… always consider your player’s point of view

VR isn’t like a film – we can’t cut to a close up or a long shot, everything is told from the player’s point of view.

We discovered, though, that we could get a similar effect by having a dramatic action cut across the scene, like when your kid sister Michelle sweeps into the scene to tell you your Mum’s been kidnapped by the villainous Tony Sharp. VR is more like theatre in that regard.

The POV is one thing we had to make the actors aware of when shooting their scenes during mo-cap. As you can’t guarantee where a player will look, everybody is potentially in close up.

Don’t… distract the player (too much)

Getting the balance right in terms of interactivity is key. We’d shot these drama sequences and worried the player didn’t have enough to do with their hands. But add too many interactive objects and the player doesn’t play attention to what’s unfolding.

Interactions need to be tied to the drama. The classic Hollywood comparison would be someone playing baseball. You’re using the bat while getting the info at the same time. Or the Matrix ‘kung fu’ scene: you’re learning martial arts while being told about the Matrix by Morpheus.

Do… look to your performers to bring something you didn’t expect

We workshopped the scenes with the actors first. Let them extemporise a bit. Sometimes we incorporated their improvisations into the script, so things looked naturalistic. For certain scenes that were central to making them work, because a lot is built on the interplay between the characters, how they spark off each other.

Do listen to your actors. We were blessed with a brilliant bunch of performers who would often suggest alternative ways of doing things, or even resurrect lines from earlier drafts! Working with an actor of the calibre of someone like Colin Salmon was extraordinary, especially as this is someone who’s always been at the forefront of new storytelling developments, and someone who’s equally at home with Hollywood as he is more experimental stuff.

Do… factor in last minute challenges

You can miss things. One critical challenge we had was a sequence when you chase the villain’s brother down a corridor. We realised that some players would just shoot him and escape. But doing so meant you didn’t get a piece of key information.

We couldn’t go back and reshoot it. That was literally a case of me writing something, going into the recording booth, recording the line, dropping that new dialogue with that key information elsewhere in that sequence. Voice over was our catch-all that covered what would have been a plot hole.

The above are observations I discovered over the course of the project. Given what we were doing was so new in so many regards, we’re pretty pleased with the results – certainly the fanbase response and critical response suggests we succeeded.

Going forwards we’ll be looking to tell more sophisticated stories that really utilise the strengths of VR. Sure we borrow from films and theatre, but we’re different from both those mediums. We’ve also assembled an in-house team of Narrative experts dedicated to exploring the possibilities of storytelling for VR, which is incredibly exciting.

  • Inside the Creation of Tetris Effect’s Original Soundtrack, Out Today

Inside the Creation of Tetris Effect’s Original Soundtrack, Out Today

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

Today is a big day for us — as big and exciting as the day Tetris Effect was first announced on stage at the PlayStation conference at E3 2018, and even when it was released later that fall.

From all of us on the Tetris Effect team: Thank you for your support, for playing the game, and for sharing your experiences with us. Since its release, we’ve received an overwhelming response from fans around the world to both the game and its music.

When I was first briefed on the project, the concept was very clear: Mizuguchi-san (our producer) and Ishihara-san (our director and art director) expressed the idea of taking you on a journey through your mind, consciousness, and emotions. “This is like zen Tetris,” they said. From there, I set the theme for the sound and music as elements that enhance your immersive experience or soothe, calm, and make you relax. Mizuguchi-san also emphasized “timelessness” — sounds and compositions that are not “on-trend,” but can be appreciated for many years to come.

In the early stages of development, we created a rough demo showcasing the general mood and atmosphere of the sound. This was then implemented into the game, and from there our designer would alter elements or make visual adjustments to better align with the music, incorporating synesthetic changes. This is when we started to get a better picture of details such as particle movement, which in turn allowed us to make further adjustments to improve the balance between visual and aural elements.

Just to share some insight into one of the stages and tracks, for the “Deep Sea” stage (the first stage), we wrote over 10 music tracks; because development started with this stage, the engineers and designers spent the most time working on it. Similarly, there was a ton of trial-and-error on the sound and musical side of things. At first it was ambient music with no vocals, next it became something with a beat, and then we experimented with both male and female vocals. It gradually developed into the present version of “Connected (Yours Forever)” featuring Kate Brady.

Of course, we had many discoveries along the way, specifically related to tempo and time signatures. When creating the feeling of excitement, for instance, we ended up gravitating towards a 4/4 time signature, with the tempo set around 135 BPM. When creating something designed to be calming, an uncommon 6/4 time signature felt more appropriate, with the tempo set around 100-120 BPM.

Tetris Effect is the culmination of all of our musical work up to now — it lets us harness all of the ideas we’ve accumulated and express them in a new way. This wouldn’t be possible without the group at Enhance and the Tetris Effect team, who really understand and deeply appreciate music.

We feel fortunate and grateful to have reunited with Mizuguchi-san when he started working on Rez Infinite back in 2015. At that time, the idea of “Area X” and being able to work in VR immediately sparked my interest; although they are two very different games, both Rez Infinite and Tetris Effect have made us recognize even more how sound can be an essential part of our experience.

We hope our work resonates in your heart, and that we’ll have a chance to share more soon. We look forward to your thoughts on the soundtrack. Please enjoy, and happy listening!

The original soundtrack is now available for download at Bandcamp.

What’s New in Espire 1: VR Operative’s Assimilation Update, Live Tomorrow

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

Digital Lode is back with Assimilation — an update to the base game that adds loads of new weapons, modes, and improvements. It is also entirely free for all owners of Espire 1: VR Operative for PS VR.

With this update, we wanted to bring more polish to how the game controls and looks, as well as introduce a whole bunch of free new content. Now players will have even more freedom to approach stealth scenarios in delightfully satisfying ways.

    New for PS VR

Espire 1 for PS VR now looks and plays better than ever before. The Assimilation update gives PS VR players a significant update to enemy AI, a complete rework to the lighting system in every level of the game, nine new Virtual Challenges and two new weapons. This means there’s a bunch of new content to enjoy for existing players, and brand new players are getting the most robust version of the game to date!

For the VR players who want to scratch that arcade-y VR itch, there are a handful of brand new virtual challenges:

    Climbing Challenges

Use the PS Move controllers to complete climbing puzzles before you get squashed by the fast-moving crushers!

    Weapon Challenges

Test your accuracy in this Espire-flavored shooting gallery as you run and gun through stages that test your reflexes during tense firefights.

    Intel Challenges

Get in, avoid detection, gather the intel, and get out in the fastest time possible.

    New Weapons

Two brand new weapons have also been added that give you new options on how to approach each environment. Additionally, both new weapons have their own series of challenge modes.

    Vector SMG

A 45-Round SMG. It fires two rounds at a time, once when pulling the trigger and again when letting go. This makes the weapon ideal for mid-range combat.

    Sawed-off Shotgun

A brand new shotgun with a wider spread that can be holstered as either a primary or secondary weapon. It also reloads via magazine clip, which is much more efficient than individual shells.

The Espire 1: VR Operative Assimilation update has snuck its way onto the PS VR today, and is included for free for all owners of the game. To celebrate the launch of this update,  Espire 1: VR Operative is also 40% off during the PlayStation Hidden Gems Sale.
