Learn More About FixyText, Coming to Xbox in The Jackbox Party Pack 10

    Reading Time: 5 minutes

Have you ever needed to send a text that you wished you could’ve had some help with? In FixyText, coming soon to The Jackbox Party Pack 10, every game is an opportunity to work together to send a message that’s as fun to write as it is to read.

In FixyText, players are given a text to which they need to respond. These texts come from one of four different categories: Flirty, Serious Business, Friends and Family, or Unknown Number. You and your friends have to work together to respond to your text… but each of you may have their own agenda. Oh, and did we mention that there’s no delete key?

After you generate your hilariously incoherent messages, players get to vote on their favorite words and phrases in each text. Before you know it, the player with the most points will be crowned the best texter, and the player with the least points will be banned from texting forever. (We’re kidding. Or are we?)

    Behind the Scenes of FixyText

FixyText was inspired by a question posed by Editorial Lead Liz Anderson, who asked, “What if a group of friends could answer your risky texts for you by jamming together in a single text box? And also, what if there was no delete key?!” Game Director Alina Constantin has further stated that the game was inspired by the universal feeling of pressing send on an important message, looking back at what you wrote, and wanting to throw your phone at the wall.

In order to create the world of FixyText, the team at Jackbox first needed to create a brand-new mechanism for recording real-time typing updates that could sync up all players’ contributions simultaneously and accurately. They then sought to balance all the text-based chaos with lo-fi bops, minimal print graphics, and ASCII characters. The result? A minimalistic blank canvas that lets your writing be the star of the show.

The FixyText team also designed the game in order to let every player shine. For example, players are offered optional suggested agendas (such as “write like you’re a ship’s captain”) that they can use for inspiration and added hilarity. What’s more, the FixyText team scripted a system of call-outs where game prompts are drafted to include player names and favorited words from earlier rounds. That means that every FixyText game spins inside jokes out of your very own words!

    The World of FixyText

Because the gameplay of FixyText is so deeply rooted in the world of texting culture and online communication, the team opted for a low-tech audio-visual backdrop. Bruno Rodriguez’s minimalist art was inspired by risograph printing, 1950’s Italian typewriter manuals, ASCII art and the Teenage Engineering design studio, while musician Kelly Shuda drew inspiration from remixing 80s drum machines, keyboard sounds, and funky hip-hop vibes for their groovy beats.

The team hopes that FixyText becomes a game that people keep coming back to for its hare-brained hive mind effect as well as its orchestrated chaos and zany humor. Game Director Alina Constantin states:

“We hope it’s the kind of game that connects players and gives space for different kinds of joyful creativity, a place where people can feel both seen and inspired to be funny in their own way. We’re excited to see it help folks create words or phrases together that they take with them to other party games and parts of their life, long after the game is done.”

Your crazy showdown with friends will become even crazier with the release of an update for SpiderHeck, which will introduce platform cross-play, allowing everyone to play together! This update will bring even more particle blade masters, web swingers, and lava swimmers into the game!

    SpiderHeck

In this article, we want to share with you some tips (and cool tricks!) that will surely help you impress not only your friends and the WHOLE Internet, but also help you emerge victorious from the most breathtaking battles!

Check out these pro tips and tricks on how to master your skills.

    Be Unpredictable

Did you know that throwing weapons from your claws can be useful? Well, of course, you should always change unsuitable and broken weapons. But you can throw your particle blade at an enemy and then pull it back, hitting the opponent on the side where they don’t have a pair or two of eyes!

You can even charge the blade before throwing it to enhance the knockback effect. In theory, hehe.

Try catching particle blades or grenades launched from the blade or grenade launchers. That’s something your opponents will definitely not expect. Boom!

    Use Your Spider… Agility!

Mines activate only upon contact with the surface of platforms or with weapons, so technically, you can juggle them indefinitely, even if they are armed. You’re welcome.

You can also “knock off” weapons from the field with your shots to deprive opponents of the opportunity to pick up a new gun or sword. Or, you can throw a weapon to yourself, although, let’s be honest here, that’s just showing off!  Of course if you’re really clever, you can shoot a gravity grenade right into your enemy… Be cunning and surprising.

This may seem obvious, but… all objects in the game interact with trampolines and portals. Aerotubes also affect the trajectory of projectiles and weapons. Use this wisely, and try not to squish yourself with a random crate.

    A Few Super-Pro-MLG Tips!

If you are flying through air with some speed, you can shoot a web slightly behind and above you (30 degrees, give or take) to gain some height, even if you have nothing to attach to. Yes, imagine it’s like a spider jetpack.

If you’re agile enough, you can hold an active laser cube in your claw and even move with it. What a terrible thing, why oh why is this possible in the game?!

We hope these tips will help you become better and master SpiderHeck like never before. Share your incredible moves with us on social media @SpiderHeck_Game, and good luck in the arena!

Vintage ham radio transformed into epic party game prop

    Arduino TeamOctober 2nd, 2018

Maker Thomas Meston needed a “mysterious looking device” that allows players to enter codes obtained via an original party game. What he came up with is entitled “Dr. Hallard’s Dream Transmission Box,” and consists of an Arduino, a party light, a smoke machine, and other components stuffed into a broken National NC-33 ham radio.

This radio makes a really excellent enclosure for the electronics inside, and when the device is properly activated the winning team hears a special message via an Arduino Uno-controlled MP3 shield, accompanied by laser lights and smoke.

    How it works:

    • When the box is switched on you hear static and see a yellow light. The device is ready for the codes to be entered.
    • Once all three dials have been set, the player switches the bottom toggle to “send” state, the box will message back whether team blue or team red has entered any codes with a quick flash of either a red or blue led.
    • If all three dials are set to red codes, the red team wins and hears a special message through the speaker just for them. The laser lights and smoke machine will be activated at the same time.
    • If all three dials are set to blue, a different message will play as well as activating the smoke machine and laser lights.

More info on the project can be found here, and while it might seem like a shame to modify this kind of vintage equipment, Meston notes that he sees this as giving it a nice second life since it was previously non-functional.
