How BWT Alpine F1 Racing Team Developed Their Car for EA Sports F1 24

    Reading Time: 7 minutes

    Summary

    • EA Sports recently chatted with BWT Alpine F1 Team Chief Engineer Pierre Genon to learn more about what it takes to bring a Formula 1 car to F1 24.
    • If you order F1 24 Champions Edition by April 24, 2024, you can be one of the first to try out the Alpine and extra 2024 liveries in F1 23 Time Trial.
    • F1 24 is currently available for pre-order on the Xbox Store for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S in two versions: Standard Edition and Champions Edition, set to launch on May 31, 2024.  Get three days early access, starting 28 May 2024 when you pre-order the Champions Edition.

A new Formula 1 season is upon us, and the Red Bull Racing Team already looks poised to repeat (again) with their number one driver Max Verstappen continuing to look untouchable.

But Formula 1 is much more than just those who take the podium on race day. It’s a spectacle enjoyed by the world over that sees 20 of the greatest drivers behind the wheels of some of the most technologically advanced racing vehicles ever created, where mere seconds and inches are the only things separating them from one another. And no game captures that better right now that the fantastic EA Sports F1 series.

But what goes into bringing one of those advanced racing vehicles into a high-octane racing game like F1 24? For those answers, EA Sports recently chatted with BWT Alpine F1 Team Chief Engineer Pierre Genon to learn more about what it takes to bring a Formula 1 car to F1 24, how aerodynamics is incorporated into the game, and the challenge of staying up to date on the latest car specifications and regulations.

EA Sports: What is it like working with EA Sports F1 to bring your car to the virtual world?

BWT Alpine F1 Team Chief Engineer Pierre Genon: It’s pretty seamless from start to finish. A credit really to the skill of the people digitalizing the assets. We have to produce artwork to create all the assets in reality for the team. So, we repurpose and share these same assets with EA Sports to enable them to create digital replicas of the real thing.

EA Sports: What is the first track you want to try the A524 on EA Sports F1 24?

Pierre Genon: The drivers don’t need to worry about me taking their seat! Australia historically was the first track of the season and that was always my nemesis. It’s the track I have raced at the most. Spa is probably my favourite – possibly because I know it so well.

EA Sports: Tracks like Spa that mix high speed straights with complex technical corners are some of the most challenging in EA Sports F1 to find a perfect car setup. How do you approach that same challenge and compromise in real life?

Pierre Genon: We always start from simulation, which is pretty good these days at guiding you to the fastest laptime. However, what is harder to simulate virtually is the ability to overtake other cars or keep them behind. For that, although we are developing simulation tools, we still use subjective judgement and the drivers in particular can have their views on the best compromise for “racing” or following other cars.

EA Sports: What data is given to EA Sports to ensure your cars are accurately represented in-game?

Pierre Genon: We provide the latest aero release to EA Sports to use in the game. It’s highly confidential material which is entrusted to them, however the model isn’t always exactly the same as the one that goes out on track for the first race of the season.

EA Sports: How do you incorporate aerodynamics and other technical aspects into the car’s design and functionality?

Pierre Genon: Aerodynamics are a major factor in the performance of a Formula 1 car that it is the other way around. We have to integrate “inconvenient” mechanical components in the car’s design without getting too far away from the ideal aerodynamic concepts.

EA Sports: How much collaboration was there with the team drivers and mechanics in the engineering process?

Pierre Genon: We have various mechanisms to ensure that the feedback from mechanics is considered in the design of future cars. Obviously within reason, as it’s more important to have a faster car than one where maintenance is easy. Drivers collaborate in the engineering process mainly by providing feedback as to how the car is behaving from their perspective and what traits of the handling prevents them from pushing harder. High quality driver feedback is preferred to engineering suggestions, which are best left to the engineers.

EA Sports: How do you adapt to engineering changes due to changes in car specifications or regulations?

Pierre Genon: With consistent regulations there is a relatively slower pace of development of engineering concepts, but rather a constant process of refinement. Major regulation changes, such as in 2022 or soon in 2026, have far more impact and the first key challenge is usually to understand which aspect of the performance of the car will become relatively more or less important, so that we put our resource in the correct areas.

EA Sports: What is your favorite part of the engineering process and why?

Pierre Genon: The above, getting to understand a new set of technical regulations and the challenges they pose.

EA Sports: How does it feel to know the car you have been working on is in EA Sports F1?

Pierre Genon It makes me very proud on behalf of my team.

Thanks to Pierre Genon for taking the time to talk with EA Sports. Now we’re super excited to experience what’s in store for with EA Sports F1 24, the official game of the 2024 FIA Formula One World Championship. • Take On the Mirror Borg in Star Trek Online: Both Worlds, Out On Xbox Today

Take On the Mirror Borg in Star Trek Online: Both Worlds, Out On Xbox Today

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

“We are the Borg. Resistance is Futile.” These seven words, first uttered in 1989, forever cause chills to run down our spines as Star Trek fans. The Borg are an implacable, unstoppable foe, one who has menaced the characters of many Star Trek shows for decades. Now, Star Trek Online has unleashed a new version of those Borg, one far fiercer than ever before.

It’s well known to Star Trek fans that there is another universe, called the Mirror Universe, where everything seems backwards. Good people are unrepentant villains, and the world is dark and cruel. Everything in the Prime Star Trek Universe exists there, but we’ve never seen the Mirror Universe’s version of the Borg, until now. Blasting through a portal into our world, these Mirror Borg are more advanced and far more aggressive than the Borg we know. Resistance, they say, will be annihilated.

Now, teaming up with Captain Harry Kim and Captain Ezri Dax (both portrayed by their original actors, Garrett Wang and Nicole de Boer), your Captain must stop these Borg before they can take a foothold in our universe. If you fail, everything will die.

Star Trek Online has long been known as the place to go for continuation of classic Star Trek stories. From the Bluegills, to the Tzenkethi, to the Voth, Star Trek Online has taken threads that were cut for time from the original Trek shows and developed them into full blown stories. For the past year, players have been battling the Mirror versions of Captain Janeway and Admiral Leeta, but as that conflict resolved, the Mirror Borg came through to wreck our hopes of peace.

In the newest release, Star Trek Online: Both Worlds, players will take the fight to the Mirror Borg as they attempt to place a beach head in our universe. Battle them in a new story mission, including facing their mysterious leader, the Borg King. And for fans of the classic Borg, you can replay one of the most defining moments of Star Trek’s history, the Battle of Wolf 359, in a brand new Task Force Operation.

The developers of Star Trek Online are huge Star Trek fans, and they relish the opportunity to expand the canon. The Mirror Borg are a unique opportunity to tweak a foe that is very familiar for Star Trek Online fans. The original Borg were one of the very first enemies brought in to Star Trek Online nearly fifteen years ago, and as the player Captains’ powers have grown, this once terrifying threat has been reduced to much less of a challenge. The Mirror Borg bring the Borg back to their roots, once again causing nightmares to reverberate through the Star Trek Universe.

Should you choose to face these new Borg, do it with caution, and get ready to modulate your frequencies. We’ll see you out there in the Final Frontier. Star Trek Online: Both Worlds is available on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One today.

  • Behind the Art of the Overwatch 2 x Cowboy Bebop Collab

Behind the Art of the Overwatch 2 x Cowboy Bebop Collab

    Reading Time: 6 minutes

The futuristic worlds of Overwatch 2 and Cowboy Bebop come together in a brand-new collaboration that fans are sure to love. When you log into Overwatch 2 on Xbox Series X|S, you’ll be able to hunt down bounties with the effortlessly cool Cassidy as Spike Spiegel, Ashe as Faye Valentine, along with more favorites from the Cowboy Bebop series.

We asked concept artists Danna Lee and Allison Yu what it was like to design the unique skins for Spike Cassidy and Faye Ashe, and help bring the world of Cowboy Bebop into Overwatch 2.

How exciting was it to create a new skin based on Cowboy Bebop?

Danna Lee: I was extremely thrilled. As a fan of Cowboy Bebop and someone who loves Spike, it was an honor to have worked on this project. I really appealed to my team that I wanted to work on a Cowboy Bebop skin because it’s my favorite anime. So, after rewatching all the episodes and the movie, I delved into the work. I already loved the series, but rewatching it after a long time got me even more excited. I remember applauding after finishing every episode.

Allison Yu: I’m a huge fan of the golden age retro anime, and that includes the beloved Cowboy Bebop series. After I heard that we would be working on this collab, I asked to work on Ashe Faye Skin immediately. Faye is such a cool character who is voiced by my favorite Japanese voice actor and her personality fits Ashe so well.  I feel very lucky to have had the opportunity to combine the looks of Faye and Ashe.

What inspiration from the anime did you bring into the skins?

Danna Lee: I aimed to replicate Spike’s outfit as faithfully as possible. I referred to the final episode for his coat. For his gadgets, I designed each of them to evoke a retro feel from that era of anime, and his weapon was inspired by Spike’s Swordfish 2. To understand Spike’s characteristics better, I analyzed and documented every scene he appeared in. I even scrutinized the retro art style in the backgrounds down to every second.

Allison Yu: Faye’s hairstyle and her personality fit Ashe very well overall. The tricky part of this skin is what kind of change we could make for B.O.B. Since Faye doesn’t usually have someone with her in the way that B.O.B. looks out for Ashe, we needed to figure out what could be the best fit for that role. After discussing it, I thought it would be really cool if we could turn her ship, the Red Tail, into B.O.B.

What challenges did you encounter when bringing the worlds of Cowboy Bebop and Overwatch 2 together?

Danna Lee: It was challenging to strike a balance between maintaining Spike’s essence and infusing Overwatch’s style. Spike’s outfit is undeniably chic and cool, but directly translating it into the game would make it overly simple.  There were also clipping issues during rigging and adjusting elements that couldn’t be implemented in-game and addressing that was tough, but with the collaboration of the tech and modeling teams, we managed to pull it off.

Allison Yu: As mentioned, designing B.O.B. was the most challenging part of this skin. The ideation of making B.O.B. into a ship was really abstract at first and we went back and forth a few times with my lead. Should we keep his shirt and pants to make him more like B.O.B. or should we just lean into the ship form? Ultimately, we decided to make his shape mimic the Red Tail ship as close as possible, making B.O.B. much more round and organic, and taking away the clothes to make this skin truly unique.

I want to shout out to my art lead, Daryl Tan, for helping me along the way while working on this skin. He took a lot of time giving feedback as we tried to figure out the solution for B.O.B.

What is your favorite episode or scene from the anime?

Danna Lee: I particularly love episodes that delve into the characters’ pasts. I have a fondness for Faye Valentine’s backstory. I remember shedding tears as I watched it. It was heart-wrenching to see her family home, where she lived with her loved ones, and her room where she lay down, slowly regaining her memories. Imagining how painful it must have been for her to gradually recall her memories deeply resonated with me. The realization that she’s the only surviving human from her time was chilling and poignant.

Allison Yu: My favorite is Episode 9, “Jamming with Edward,” and that is when Edward shows up and joins the team, which suddenly makes the show more energetic, and I always enjoy how she acts funny with Ein.

Are there any fun details about the skins players should look out for?

Danna Lee: The hat worn by Spike Cassidy is Andy Von De Oniyate’s hat. There’s an episode where the two engage in a cowboy showdown, and in the end, Andy places his hat on Spike. I incorporated this detail into the skin. The key hanging from Cassidy’s waist is the key to Swordfish 2. I thought adding this key, which is used to pilot the Swordfish, would be a fun element. I worked on these details with the hope that fans and players would appreciate the attention to detail. It was immensely enjoyable to consider these aspects while working on the skin.

Allison Wu: I worked on adding different items of Faye from different episodes, including the sunglasses she wears in Episode 3, “Honky Tonk Woman,” and the earrings in Episode 5, “Ballad of Fallen Angels.” Also, we paid a lot of attention to B.O.B. as the Red Tail, matching the smallest details from the actual ship in his air vent shape, head, and color choices.

The Overwatch 2 x Cowboy Bebop Collab event is live now through March 25. You can purchase the new Legendary skins for Spike Cassidy, Faye Ashe, Edward Sombra, and Jet Mauga from the Overwatch 2 shop, and log onto Overwatch 2 on Xbox X|S and complete engaging new challenges to claim bounties of new rewards, including the Ein Wrecking Ball Legendary Skin.

Pull Up to the Starting Line for Forza Motorsport Update 6

    Reading Time: 6 minutes

Forza Motorsport Update 6 invites you to explore different engines, the beating heart inside your favorite cars.

Look forward to a new Featured Tour – the Combustion Tour – with additional Spotlight cars and Car Pass deliveries each week, as well as a fresh schedule of Multiplayer and Rivals events.

Update 6 also introduces the changes to Car Progression we told you about previously and adjusts the Daytona pit-lane exit following your feedback.

Forza Motorsport Update 6 rolls out for download from 10:00 AM PT / 6:00 PM UTC on Xbox Series X|S and PC via the Microsoft Store and Steam. Spotlight cars and new Career, Featured Multiplayer and Rivals events start Wednesday, March 13 from 4:00 PM PT (12:00 AM UTC on Thursday, March 14).

    Car Progression

With the changes coming to Car Progression in Forza Motorsport Update 6, you will have the freedom to equip the parts you want to install on your car regardless of Car Level.

The first change is to remove the level restriction on performance parts, making them all available at Car Level 1. This allows players to install parts in any order they wish, regardless of Car Level. Whether it’s engine swaps, race tires, or body kits, you will have the freedom to build cars your way.

Secondly, players can use in-game Credits to acquire Car Points when exiting the upgrade screen at a ratio of 4,500 Credits for 500 Car Points. This change gives you a choice to immediately upgrade your car using Credits, or if you’re saving your Credits, you can earn Car Points for upgrades through car leveling as before.

    Game Improvements and Release Notes

We continue to optimize and improve the overall stability of Forza Motorsport. Update 6 introduces new fixes and experience improvements, including additional lighting options for the Livery Editor to help players see how their designs look in different conditions.

Following the addition of Daytona to our track list in Update 4, we’ve heard your feedback and have changed the pit lane exit to address track-rejoin collisions and more closely reflect the track as it is used in real life events.

This update also introduces 8 new music tracks to the game, composed by Kaveh Cohen and Michael Nielsen, and Peter Holmstrom, and these will be played while you’re in the Homespace.

Below you will find a snapshot of the other fixes and improvements in Update 6. Head on over to Forza Support to find the full release notes.

New Career Tour – Combustion Tour

Engines come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes and configurations. The Combustion Tour is where you will experience first-hand how the number of cylinders found in an engine is foundational to delivering its power.

Discover small-sized engines with remarkable power output in 4 Cylinder Furies. Explore iconic 6-cylinder cars that epitomize enthusiast motoring in Super Sixes. Go back in time and immerse yourself in the golden era of Detroit muscle with V8 Heritage. Finally, master an elite class of engines that defy convention in V10 Titans.

Spotlight cars featured in the Combustion Tour allow you to experience the true potential of these engines. Get ready to race in the 2014 Alfa Romeo 4C, 2002 Nissan Skyline GT-R V-Spec II, 1969 Dodge Charger R/T, and 2014 Lamborghini Huracán LP 610-4.

Series within the Combustion Tour do not have to be completed in a particular week – you have until April 24, 2024, to finish this latest Featured Tour. Spotlight cars are available at a discount for the week during which they are featured.

Complete the Combustion Tour to earn the 2009 Pagani Zonda Cinque Roadster – an ultra-exclusive hypercar with exceptional performance from its 7.3-liter V12 delivering 678 horsepower.

Open Class Tour – Engine Cylinders

With each update to Forza Motorsport, the Open Class Tour gets refreshed with new events and a new reward car.

Open Class Tour is where you can continue the journey of your favorite cars. Cars that you’ve already built in a different Builders Cup series can be further levelled up and upgraded in the Open Class Tour.

In Update 6, cylinder count is king in this unique twist on the Open Class Tour with Drivatars racing cars ranging from modest to high-performance engines.

All 4 refreshed Open Class Tour series (C, B, A, S) will be available on March 13. Your reward for completing all four of these series before April 10, 2024, will be the 2010 Ferrari 599XX with its screaming V12 engine!

In Featured Multiplayer, new variations in the Open Series combine class restrictions with engine cylinder counts. Engine swaps change the number of cylinders your car has under the hood, so experiment with different builds and tuning setups to find the perfect balance on the track.

Week 1 challenges you to build A class cars with 4-cylinder engines, followed by S class cars with 6-cylinder engines in Week 2. Then in Week 3 tune your favorite A class cars with 8 cylinders before maximizing power and performance with S class cars and 12-cylinder engines in Week 4!

Over in the Spec Series, get ready for the BMW M3 Spec Series, Forza P2 Series, Vintage Le Mans Prototype Series, and Early LMP Series.

Here’s a look at your Featured Multiplayer calendar of upcoming events for Update 6:

    BMW M3 Spec Series – March 13-20

The first generation of the legendary M3, the E30 model, continued BMW’s long tradition of racing success with outstanding power and near perfect balance.

Women Behind Minecraft Are Building a Better World Through the Power of Play, Block by Block

“I would say reach out to someone in the industry, so whether it’s an alumnus from your school or someone you’ve seen on a panel, just start a conversation, start building your network,” Duan says. “We all started somewhere. You can find so many people who are willing to share their story and support your journey in this industry.”

“Being part of studios that get the game into players’ hands very quickly, means you can feel that impact, what resonates and what doesn’t,” Chenn says. If I had Minecraft when I was 5 on my Game Boy, I know I would be a creator today.”

Walters, who came into Mojang after 13 years with Lucasfilm, urges early career women to “stick with it” in the competitive and demanding gaming and entertainment industries.

“You will definitely encounter obstacles and setbacks. If it’s something you’re passionate about, don’t ever give up, right? Find ways to overcome. Pivot when you need to, find ways to achieve your goals. That may mean learning new skills, seeking new opportunities or networking with others,” she says. “Be confident that we can do it, but also be collaborative, supportive, curious and adventurous. Be resilient and persistent.”

“One of the core reasons I joined the company is because of our purpose, which is building a better world through the power of play,” says Duan, who brought experience from working at LucasArts and Leapfrog on game-based learning to Minecraft Education.

Her team is responsible for getting Minecraft games to players on an array of platforms across console, PC and mobile.

“When I joined Mojang three years ago, it felt like a homecoming to be able work on an IP [intellectual property] that is as universal as Minecraft and to understand the impact that we could have on the world.”

For Walters, who leads efforts to deliver new experiences and expand outside of the core Minecraft game, that means extending the game’s ethos into entertainment. She’s just recently gone to work on a Minecraft film in progress.

Minecraft’s consumer products business alone has doubled in revenue over the past two years.

  • Welcome to “Green Hell”: Adding the Legendary Nordschleife to Forza Motorsport

Welcome to “Green Hell”: Adding the Legendary Nordschleife to Forza Motorsport

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

“The Nürburgring was built in 1927 with extraordinary length through the middle of the Eifel forests. It remains the longest permanent race track to this day. Even back then, the racing drivers who came to the Nürburgring knew what an incredibly special and challenging track the Nürburgring actually is,” explains Alexander, quoting Rudolf Caracciola, who won the first car race on the Nürburgring and described his experience as follows:

“When we came to the newly opened Nürburgring in 1927, we opened our eyes. We had never experienced anything like it. There was a road in the middle of the Eifel mountains, a closed loop with almost 180 bends spread over 22 kilometers. It was a track with gradients that were a sharp blow to the engine, but also with unspeakably beautiful views far across the country, of valleys and villages.”

On the one hand, it is the almost 100-year history that still inspires awe and respect among motorsport enthusiasts and professional racing drivers alike: 1000-kilometer races, fatal accidents, unforgettable Formula 1 races, new records and impressive performances by the best drivers in the world. Record-breaking world champion Michael Schuhmacher made such a lasting impression that an entire corner was named after him. When Niki Lauda’s Ferrari went up in flames on the Nordschleife in 1976, the entire motorsport world held its breath.

In addition to the history, it is the track itself that accounts for the legend of the Nordschleife: the unique layout, the dynamics, the differences in altitude and the unique atmosphere. If you want to complete a lap, you have to tackle over 70 corners and 300 meters of elevation gain. An experience that demands everything from the driver and is now possible in Forza Motorsport.

In Forza Motorsport, players will discover what makes this circuit an adrenaline-filled crucible, one which pushes professionals, manufacturers, cars – and now, finally, Forza fans – to their limits. YouTuber and racing expert rAii has already put the track through its paces in countless racing games, including the new Forza Motorsport, and shared his thoughts on the presentation with Xbox Wire DACH: “It just feels like the Nordschleife that you know. That’s the most important thing.”

Unicorn Overlord: Vanillaware’s Compellingly Unique Xbox Debut

    Reading Time: < 1 minute

You play as Alain, a young leader of a resistance movement that aims to overthrow the tyrannical Zenoiran empire that has enslaved the world. Along the way, you will recruit so many allies from different races and classes, each with different strengths, aversions, and their own reasons for fighting. You’re literally reclaiming the whole world, hearts and minds included, one patch of ground at a time – coloring in a map using your weapons instead of paints.

The real fun is in how these systems mesh together; as your army swells, so do your options to wage war with the empire. Things start simple and approachably, with players commanding a few teams of two around small maps. As you build your renown through victory, you’ll be able to field as many as 10 teams of 5 characters at once, all playing different roles on the battlefield. Hulking Hoplites hold down chokepoints with massive shields in hand. Flying units, such as Gryphon Knights, soar over obstacles to press an advantage, while ranged Hunters and Witches can take over towers to help those on the ground gain an advantage with combat assists.

The Cultbuster has been banned on the plains after the Cult of Iron Massacre six years ago, but the contraband wand has found its way on the Shatter in the hands of those same cultists.

    Odden’s Pointer

Odden Hammerite is a mechanist craftswoman from the eastern plains whose guns are recognizable from their brutalist designs. She’s a supplier of the Gladwell family, who value the added power the guns generate by charging up shots. Together, her line of guns is known as Odden’s Fist.

    Vitriol

The Cult of Lead has developed numerous weapons to better spread poison and corruption. Vitriol is one of their most successful experimental weapons yet. Each shot adds an additional poison dose to its bullet, making it the ideal companion to lethal finisher spells!

    Malediction

Draco Scarpath is renowned for his extraordinarily powerful gunmancy. The downside to his obsidian-infused wands is that every shot drains the life from their wielder’s body. The more powerful the gun, the higher a toll it takes. Most wizards stay far away from his cursed weapons… except those who prize power above all else.

    Blightspreader

Since discovering the Infinite Well in the Tower, Orion has spent years trying to cleanse its poison. His idea for the Blightspreader came originally as a way to deliver antidotes faster than the Well’s rate of decay, but now his gun too has been corrupted. Orion has infused the minigun with the Well’s poison and wields it as a weapon against those who would attack Hilda and her Riders.

We hope you enjoy racking up Bounties, getting to grips with your new toys, and putting your Gun Racks to good use. Good luck, gunslingers! You’re gonna need it…

Wizard With a Gun is out now for Xbox Series X|S. The Bounty of Guns update arrives for free today.

Galacticare Exclusive Hands On: A Delightfully Witty Management Sim That Puts Narrative First

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

There is often no greater time sink than a good management simulator, and when they come as witty and delightful as Galacticare, it’s even harder to put them down. Galacticare is a bizarre and brilliant strategy game where you’re tasked with the running of an interstellar health company, managing hospitals, discovering weird, alien ailments, and finding ways to cure them. Xbox Wire was fortunate enough to get our hands-on a never-before-seen level, and speak with Galacticare Creative Director Josh Bishop about the makings of this wacky adventure.

Bishop tells us that crafting a hospital game was developer Brightrock Games’ vision from the outset, but they wanted to build more than a management simulator. The team wanted to push the boundaries of the genre’s mechanics, while putting a fun, unique narrative at the forefront of the experience.

“The backdrop that gave us the most freedom to explore was the choice to set the game in space,” Bishop says. “Being able to create a whole galaxy with eccentric alien species, unusual diseases and out of this world technology would not have been possible without a setting of this kind.”

The space setting also makes way for this cast of quirky, non-human characters to engage in similarly wacky stories, which was important for the team. This shines through in Galacticare‘s clever dialogue; the recurring characters are a cast to get to know, not just an aimless NPC to prop up the gameplay.

“Often with simulator games, narrative is secondary. For us, it was one of our primary goals: to give the game, the world, a story that the player will remember,” Bishop says.

Often with simulator games, narrative is secondary.
For us, it was one of our primary goals.

“As the main character, we want you to feel a part of this episodic journey through the stars. The dialogue is a huge part of crafting that with our players, immersing themselves in a colourful galaxy that they play one of the most significant parts in.”

We got a taste of this during our playthrough of Many Me, the sixth level of Galacticare‘s story mode. Here your job is to organise and treat clones of a single character, the villainous geneticist Dr Ohdious. The plot twist? This is not a hospital, it’s a prison, built to house Dr Ohdious and his many illegal clones. Due to security issues, you’ll need to create more clones to help cure the inmates, rather than hiring outside talent for the jobs at hand.

“Dr Ohdious, the consultant for this level, was actually one of the first consultants we designed, knowing that we wanted to create a level focused solely around him,” Bishop tells us. “His maverick approach to cloning gave us a vehicle to twist the gameplay into a unique experience mechanically and narratively for players: clone your own doctors.”

Fortunately, Dr. Ohdious has seen fit to share his knowledge of cloning with us, at least. This level also opens up the Cerebral Rehab, alongside the ability to clone your staff, or wipe the minds of existing employees, so they can re-train in whatever discipline you need. I get very attached to my subjects, to the ability to sculpt them to my precise (and often chaotic) needs was an extremely welcome change to Galacticare‘s formula.

Many Me isn’t alone in being a unique gameplay experience, either. Bishop tells us that many of the levels in Galacticare alter the core gameplay in various ways, which will keep you on your toes, and stop you from following the same pattern when you enter a brand new scenario.

Dr Ohdious is one of Galacticare‘s Consultants – one-of-a-kind doctors that can be unlocked as you progress through the story, and will remain on hand for recruitment in future levels. Each Consultant comes with their own unique personality and story, as well as their own abilities, which makes them both useful and memorable as you progress.

“Consultants play a vital component in guiding you through interesting gameplay choices and moment-to-moment decision making,” Bishop adds. “In a genre where choices can sometimes start narrowing once you’ve committed to a path – they aim to give flexibility and support.”

Many Me is just one of the extremely fun scenarios that Galacticare places you in, and I can’t wait to get fully stuck in to this zany universe. Scrub up for a truly out of this world experience when Galacticare launches on Xbox Series X|S later this year.
