How Beyond Xbox: Field Trips is Teaching Valuable Life Skills via Game Pass Favorites

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

Xbox has teamed up with Ukie’s Digital Schoolhouse to launch Beyond Xbox: Field Trips, a series of interactive learning experiences, available on Spotify, to help young people learn through play.

These experiences are set to be delivered as a series of podcasts, featuring seven Xbox Game Pass titles. Each audio journey will focus on a specific game, and the skills that are encouraged and honed while playing. The Field Trips aim to help young people sharpen thought processes, learn collaborative skills, and experience a sense of accomplishment in an immersive environment.

Xbox Wire had the opportunity to sit down with Ollie Bray, co-author of the European Games in Schools Handbook, who helped shape this project. With Bray, we found out how this the podcasts came to be, and what makes Xbox’s catalogue the perfect selection for skills-based learning.

Bray has a background in teaching, and, like many academics, found himself frustrated by more traditional methods to get young people involved with classroom activities. The original thought process of how games can assist with this hurdle came from Sim City, which encourages its players to think about urban planning in an interesting way.

“The traditional ways that we do things are often really dull, but games and simulations offer personalised learning experiences,” Bray says. “When we’re thinking about ‘soft skills’, these game environments are a really good example of how to develop those.”

Beyond Xbox: Field Trips has a couple of main goals in mind, according to Bray. One is to showcase video games as tools that can generate powerful learning opportunities.

The other is to demonstrate how games do not have to have been made specifically for educational purposes to have educational benefits.

We had the chance to listen to the Sea of Thieves episode of Beyond Xbox: Field Trips ahead of its release, which focuses on encouraging teamwork and delegation – something that is already integral to Sea of Thieves’ gameplay.

“There are aspects of the game where young people are picking up maps, which links to geography, how we learn about latitude and longitude, compass directions, map orientation, all sorts of skills,” Bray says.

“It’s the kind of hard learning you’d expect to get in a geography classroom, which is often reinforced by a textbook or video, but in this case, we’re reinforcing it through interactive gameplay, which gives young people motivation.”

On the campaign, Shahneila Saeed, Director of Digital Schoolhouse and Head of Education at Ukie added, “we’re very excited to be supporting such an original and unique program, using games to develop the skills of young people. I can’t wait to see how these audio learning journeys are implemented in our Digital Schoolhouse network over the coming months, and the impact that they will have.”

    Sea of Thieves Season Eight

Each audio learning journey is available on Spotify, and prompts players to take part in a number of in-game tasks in order to develop important soft skills. All seven games are available via Xbox Game Pass, and can be seen below alongside the skills they encourage:

    • Grounded – Problem Solving & Analytical Thinking
    • Sea of Thieves – Teamwork and Delegation
    • Minecraft – Creativity and Innovation
    • Microsoft Flight Simulator – Focus and Diligence
    • PowerWash Simulator – Motivation and Prioritisation
    • Age of Empires IV – Strategy and Decision making
    • Cities: Skylines – Planning and Adaptability

Choosing Game Pass titles was another important element of Beyond Xbox: Field Trips. Bray shares that all of these games can be accessed with just one Game Pass membership.

“We wanted to include a number of different genres of game to be able to cater for different interests,” Bray explains. “You’ll find your classic sandbox game in there, Minecraft; survival elements from Grounded; and more surprising titles such as Powerwash Simulator, which is a difficult game to explain, but is hugely therapeutic to play.”

A final note that Bray touches on is how play is highly encouraged during early development, and again later in adult life, but there’s a middle point where leaning on resources like video games is underutilized. Bray adds, “this makes me wonder if we can rethink the approach to the middle part a little – games are a highly engaging learning environment.”

Beyond Xbox: Field Trips are now available via Spotify. They can also be accessed as in more accessible formats as visual guides on Xbox.com to cater to different learning styles.

Use the Potions You Craft in Alchemist: The Potion Monger

    Reading Time: 6 minutes

    Hello soon to be Alchemists,

I’m Mateusz, Game Designer of Alchemist: The Potion Monger, here to convince you to buy property surrounded by gigantic vines (a small annoyance) on a faraway island.

This fresh opportunity is now available for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S owners!

    APM screenshot

    Purchase Agreement Includes:

    • Solving puzzles to brew potions and using them during RPG adventures.
    • Furnishing and decorating your newly bought property.
    • Adopting alchemical pets (and petting them!).
    • And much more…

    Interested?

Feel welcome to the world of Alchemist: The Potion Monger, full of anthropomorphic animals! Let me be your guide.

    Potion Brewing

    APM cauldron

Alchemy is the key aspect of the game (as you surely expected from the title called Alchemist: The Potion Monger).

Every potion recipe is based on Aspects – reflections of emotions, forces of nature, and ideas. Aspects are divided into four Elements:

    • Earth – the backbone of many brews, such as Healing Potions, Poisons, Resurrection Potions, and many more!
    • Air – a huge part in Speed Potions, Jump Potions, Perfumes, and all kinds of mind-boosting brews.
    • Fire – can set fires (what a surprise), explode, cause aggression, or spread love.
    • Water – creates brews such as Cleaning Potions, Quick Reflexes Potions, Ice Potions, etc.
    APM screenshot

Creating a potion is no easy task and every brew is a Puzzle to solve. How you solve them will depend on the ingredients and alchemical tools you have available. Use various alchemical and other (demonic altars, holy waters, and more) tools to process the ingredients. Then put them into the cauldron and start brewing!

    Using your Brews

This is a unique aspect among the alchemist simulators available on the market. After creating potions venture outside your home and influence the world with their help! Possibilities are plenty:

    • Help the farmer grow plants

    • Or„ “Grow” the farmer!

    • Make a fireworks show for the townsfolk

    Design your Home/Lab

and make it truly your own! – Alchemist: The Potion Monger will allow a lot of customization in designing your home and yard.

    APM dog

When you first arrive at the Island as an alchemist apprentice, you’ll have an empty home, a sleeping bag, and only some basic alchemical tools with you. Slowly you’ll be able to fill the empty space with furniture, trophies (from slain bosses), advanced tools, and some other weird stuff.

    APM screenshot

Acquire blueprints from the market, find them in the world, or receive them as a quest reward, and make your – empty at-first – home a true mansion of the wealthy alchemist!

    Pets

To learn alchemy you’ll surely need some help, luckily you’re not alone.

You’ll arrive on the island with yourtrusty Shiba (you’ll be able to name him/her as you wish). He/she is very special. He/she is the best boy/girl!

    APM dog facing

Actually, there is one more thing that makes him/her special -the ability to discover the Earth’s element Aspects. With time you’ll be able to let more special animals join your party! Every element (Earth, Air, Fire, and Water) has its own corresponding pet for you to find and tame.

    Potion Trading

Everybody has to eat, and is there any better way to make your coin than to sell magical potions to those in need?

    APM street

Start with working for the middleman and fulfill potion contracts to earn Gold and Reputation. Receive bonuses for better-quality brews, and slowly grow topurchase your own market stall!

    APM screenshot

Every sold Potion will award you with:

    • Gold- a basic resource on the Island, thanks to it you’ll be able to buy Ingredients, Blueprints, Home Upgrades, Potion Recipes, Skill Books, Tools, and more. However, there are some things gold cannot buy…
    • Reputation- You arrive on the Island as a nobody and have to slowly gain trust and renown. Do various quests for the Islanders, complete potion contracts, and participate in various events to grow your reputation. A higher reputation will unlock new goods in stores, more quests, more lucrative potion contracts, and progress in the story.

    Abilities

During your alchemist career, your character will develop in various ways. However, there is no ordinary leveling-up system, instead, you’ll be able to get/find/purchase ability scrolls. When you acquire them, the task for the respective skill will be unlocked (e.g. have four potion effects on yourself at once – Slower Metabolism), and when you finish it, you’ll gain a new ability.

  • A Look into the Signature Gameplay Animations for TopSpin 2K25

A Look into the Signature Gameplay Animations for TopSpin 2K25

    Reading Time: 6 minutes

    Summary

    • Learn from the developers of TopSpin about the process of capturing the new signature animations for TopSpin 2K25, the latest installment in the beloved franchise.
    • See how these animations were implemented, amongst other new features and improvements, within the TopSpin 2K25 Gameplay Showcase.
    • TopSpin 2K25 is available for pre-order today on the Xbox Store and will launch April 26, 2024, for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.

As mentioned in our Gameplay Showcase Centre Court Report, TopSpin 2K25 picks up where Top Spin 4 left off in terms of gameplay and animation quality. One of the first things you’ll notice when you see or play TopSpin 2K25 is that we’ve added a lot of new signature-style animations for the players’ serves, forehands, backhands and return idles. In this Xbox Wire article, we’ll share an insight into the types of signature animations that are featured in TopSpin 2K25, before showcasing how we at Hangar 13 created these animations: from analyzing players to Motion Capture, all the way through to animation.

When playing TopSpin 2K25, tennis fans will certainly notice the attention to detail on some of their favorite players’ animations. For example, you’ll be able to recognize Roger Federer’s stylish backhand, Serena William’s devastating serve, or Iga Swiatek’s powerful forehand animation, just to name a few. In addition to these animations that aim at recreating the unique style of specific pros, we also captured a variety of animations that can be shared by multiple pros with similar swinging motions. Players can also use their 2K Account to add signature-styles to their MyPlayers to make them customizable, not only visually, but also in the way they move and hit the ball.

Some signature styles will be available immediately at launch, so you can begin working on your playstyle right away. We will also be adding new signature-style animations with each new Season. Players can use virtual currency to get some of their favorite signature-styles from the Pro Shop and additional styles will be available to unlock via the Premium Centre Court Pass (available for additional purchase). By the end of Season 6, TopSpin 2K25 will have over 2x the amount of signature styles featured in TopSpin 4.

Now, we’re excited to share with you a sneak peek into the processes involved in adding these new signature styles in the game. The first step is to look at the players we have in our roster and to identify which ones have a truly unique or recognizable style for either their serve, forehand, backhand, or return idle, and to capture video references of each. Then, we create what we call a “shot list” for motion capture, which is a list of individual animations we want to capture with our athlete/actor/actress. For example, each forehand or backhand style consists of a total of nine individual animations that can play based on the height of the ball or the direction and speed of the player before hitting the ball.

Once the shot list is finalized, we’re ready to move on to the mocap stage and start capturing all these new animations. On the day of the shoot, we get Hangar 13’s mocap crew, animators, and designers together, our team of semi-pro tennis players suited up in that pretty cool-looking mocap suit to serve as our actors and actresses, and we’re ready to go. We show our actor/actress the motion we would like to capture and watch the video references with them to identify all the key poses and elements that make this motion unique. When the actor/actress is ready, they start practicing the motion to get a better feel for it, and then we record it, replay it on the monitor on the mocap stage, and compare it with the video reference. We repeat that until we’re happy with the result and it looks close enough to the reference.

With both Roger Federer and Serena Williams, we were able to spend time with them on the motion capture stage and record their actual serves, forehands, backhands, and return idles, so the final result in the game is even closer to their real style.

After the data is captured and processed by the technicians of the mocap stage it goes to the animators who apply the data to a male or female character. At this stage the animation still looks very rough, so the animators clean up all the posing, making sure that it doesn’t look broken, but also that it looks as close as possible to the style of the pro player! The animators also make sure that it adheres to the specifications, like making sure that the racket hits the ball at the expected height, or that it’s oriented properly during the swinging motion based on the type of swing. The data from the mocap includes the motion of the racket, but it does not include any motion on the fingers, so the animators spend quite a bit of time making sure the hands and fingers are properly gripping the racket.

Once the animation has had a first pass, it’s exported and checked in the engine on the pro player it was created for and that’s when we truly see everyone’s efforts come to life for the first time! The animation gets implemented and reviewed by designers in-game, after which there’s often a round of feedback and the animations are polished even further.

Truly a lot of care and attention to detail went into the animations, from start to finish. We’re eager for you to see the level of authenticity and realism present in TopSpin 2K25 — Rally On!

Community Update April 2024 – Seeking Updates of the Morning

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

    The Fire Dawn

Welcome back to another monthly Community Update. Thankfully, this year’s April 1st landed on Monday, so you can rest assured knowing everything below isn’t an elaborate ruse. (But watch out for next year!) We have a couple of updates, as well as a new development we think will excite everyone; so, let’s dive in!

    The Finisher

We’re happy to confirm that we are in the final stages of two different projects. This month should see the formal transition of release notes away from the Xbox Wire to their new home on the Xbox Support website! This has been a tremendous undertaking so that all Xbox users can find their updates in one central location. There will be a larger article forthcoming that outlines all of the changes along with links/hubs for this new setup. This change will also enable some of the future content we’re planning for this blog, so stay tuned!

The other conclusion we’re reaching this month is our “Get To Know The Team” articles. There are around a half dozen of these still to come, so expect those to come out throughout the rest of the month. It’s been a lot of fun getting to share more about the team, so we hope that everyone has enjoyed these chats with the Xbox Insider Team. (Yesterday’s was particularly fun to write. 😊)

    The Pitch

Now, for an announcement of sorts. Over the past few months, we’ve been working in close partnership with the wonderful team over at Sumo Leamington on their preview for Stampede: Racing Royale, which launched late last week. If you haven’t seen it yet check this out!

In the near future, we’ll be hosting the first ever “community/developer plays” event exclusively for Xbox Insiders. Hop into the kart-battling mayhem of Stampede: Racing Royale and challenge the developers themselves to become the ultimate champion! More details about this event will be shared on socials for Xbox Insider and Stampede: Racing Royale. See ya there!

    The Summit

One other community initiative we’ll be doing this month is over on the Xbox Insiders subreddit. There was a great thread last week that a lot of our community members were passionate about, so we’re following that up starting today with a “Community Talk Back” thread to discuss the topic in greater detail. Stop on by and share your thoughts with the team!

    The Rise

And that’s it for April! We still have projects in various states of progress (baking, simmering, heating; we like our cooking analogies), but nothing quite ready to share further.

As always, I hope everyone enjoyed this installment of the Xbox Insider Program Community Update. If you want to chat about this—and everything else XIP—hop on over to the r/XboxInsiders subreddit or throw us a follow @xboxinsider.

Get To Know Our Team: Andrew – Customer Experience Manager

Haha. I still think it’s the greatest console operating system of all time. But yeah, I was really passionate about telling everyone I could how much I loved that OS. Fast forward to around 2017-2018, I had just transferred over to a new CSS role, and I was talking about my love for the blades with my new team. Well, a long-tenured teammate showed up at my office about a week later. Turns out, he worked on the hardware team, and he had an old 360 that still had the blades dashboard on it stored in his archives. He gifted it to me and now It’s one of my favorite things I own. A true gem in my collection that means a lot to me personally.

How Super Space Club Beautifully Pairs Hectic Arcade Gameplay with Pure Chill-Hop Jazzy Vibes

    • Lo-fi arcade space shooter to chill to.
    • Stylized modern take on iconic classic arcade games that we all love.
    • Available now!

Hey! Graham here, the Jamaican solo indie dev behind your next favorite space shooter, Super Space Club. I’m a big fan of the shoot-em-up genre, and I also have a ton of respect for classic arcade shooters. I’ve always wanted to make my own arcade-inspired shooter, while also making it my own — visually, sonically, and mechanically driven by my interests and my background. That’s how Super Space Club came to exist, and I’m not sure there’s anything that’s beat-for-beat akin to it.

    SSC animal face

Your mission is to defend the galaxy by taking control of one of the five skilled anthropomorphic misfits known as the titular Super Space Club. Enemies are seemingly endless, profusely coming at you wave after wave, each wave increasing in difficulty and variety. You must skillfully dance around the sea of incoming attacks while launching your own, use your selected character’s ability to level the playing field, and if your ship runs out of energy, barely escape death by initiating your hyperdrive. This is the core loop of the game, and my homage to the arcade era of games where you could pick up and play a round or ten at any given point and thoroughly enjoy your time with it.

From there, I brought it to the modern era of gaming with the art direction, certain gameplay mechanics, and most importantly, the music. I didn’t want to add to the seemingly infinite list of space-themed games set in a realistic dark and moody universe with intense electronic music as a backdrop to raise your blood pressure. Instead, Super Space Club takes the hectic moment-to-moment gameplay and pairs it with a funky, visually striking color palette and chill music with vocals to groove to.

    SSC Screenshot

The heart and soul of Super Space Club is in fact the music. Thanks to the Missouri-based duo Fat Bard, the game truly sounds and feels one-of-a-kind. The soundtrack pulls from lo-fi, hip-hop, jazz, and reggae, and fuses them to make auditory butter. Laid on top of the tracks are vocals from African-American hip-hop artists, a Jamaican reggae artist, and a French hip-hop artist and singer, all of whom further elevate the music beyond your average “video game music.” It’s not just you, the player, that is listening to the tracks, however. The music is actually a part of the game as the characters themselves are jamming to it. When your ship takes damage, the track skips a beat. When you’re low on energy, the music becomes muffled so that you both can focus on surviving just one more wave. If you slow time, the music gets chopped and screwed.

Utilizing color in the way I did allowed me to keep the game’s visuals minimal yet extremely readable and strikingly pleasant to look at for hours on end. Space should be a colorful place! Adding characters to the mix allowed me to have fun creating abilities that matched the animals’ personalities, and it allows you to find one that resonates with you both as a player and as a person. Each character has their own ability, look, and personality, and you’re sure to find your favorite of the bunch.

Having various characters, weapons, and ships to unlock as you progress throughout the game, you’ll ultimately have over a hundred different loadout combinations at your disposal, each giving the game its own unique flavor — each combo changing how you play the game. Will you pair a slow yet sturdy ship, a character with a shield, and a low-speed, high-impact weapon to create a tank-like build? Or, will you pick a low-energy, speedy ship and combine it with homing missiles and a character who tosses out homing mines for a fragile chaotic run? There are so many combinations for you to try out and find which one suits your playstyle the most.

Whether you decide to play Super Space Club as a zen wind-down experience, or as something to quickly dive into to try and get a new high score, I truly hope that you enjoy outlasting your enemies and vibing to the rhythm of the stars.

Super Space Club is a colorful endless arcade gunner set to the backdrop of chill, lo-fi music. As a club of skilled misfit pilots, defend the galaxy by taking on galactic forces and completing a series of thrilling missions. In space, everyone can hear you groove. Sling fireworks with the explosive Olly, or dish out ship-seeking shots with the stealthy Roscoe? With a variety of pilots, ships, and weapons at your disposal, choose the perfect build and soar across the stars through physics-based thrusting. As you’re taking down enemies and completing objectives, be wary of your ship’s energy. Depleting energy could leave you vulnerable to devastating damage. Don’t get too comfortable after coming out on top, as the next wave is always right around the corner. Despite the challenge that gameplay may bring, space can be quite dope. Missouri-based audio duo Fat Bard provides the backdrop of lo-fi beats and chill-hop tunes featuring vocal artists from around the globe. Paired with a vibrant and colorful cool-toned aesthetic, Super Space Club delivers a relaxing yet challenging arcade experience unlike any other.
