  • Tips, Tricks, and Shortcuts for Unlocking Elden Ring’s Shadow of the Erdtree DLC

Tips, Tricks, and Shortcuts for Unlocking Elden Ring’s Shadow of the Erdtree DLC

    Reading Time: 10 minutes

The day is nearly upon us, Tarnished: Elden Ring’s largest and, sadly, final expansion launches on June 21. With tons of new locations, weapons, armor, and bosses spanning dozens of hours, Shadow of the Erdtree is everything Elden Ring fans could have hoped for. There’s just one caveat: you need to have progressed far enough into the base game to actually play it.

Since Shadow of the Erdtree fits neatly into the existing Elden Ring lore (and adeptly expands upon it while still leaving a hint of mystery), lowly Tarnished are required to meet and defeat a couple of the key players, Starscourge Radahn and Mohg, Lord of Blood, before venturing into the Shadow Realm. We’ll give you some pointers to getting to them as quickly as possible, but it’ll still be up to you to beat them. (Need help defeating Elden Ring bosses? Hit up KingTut33 on Xbox Live and I’ll happily add you to my list of satisfied Tarnished.)

    Starscourge Radahn (Normal Method)

Although you can technically fight these two bosses in whichever order you want, it make sense to start with Radahn. Radahn is a tough boss that is ultimately located in Redmane Castle in southeastern Caelid (yes, the red rot area), but only after you unlock the Radahn Festival. There are a number of methods to doing this. The most straightforward method involves playing through the story as the developers intended, beginning with battling through Stormveil Castle and defeating Godrick the Grafted.

After he’s down, continue on to the Liurnia of the Lakes region, specifically the Raya Lucaria Academy towering above it in the center of the map. Here, you’ll need to fight your way through magic-wielders galore (this is a wizarding school, after all) and platform your way up some massive lifts to gradually make your way to the boss awaiting you at the top. Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon isn’t the most challenging fight in Elden Ring, but it’s certainly one of the most memorable.

Once you’ve beaten both Godrick and Rennala, you can make your way to Redmane Castle in Caelid to begin the Radahn Festival and take on this tough boss with or without the help of the many summons available to you. What would you expect at a festival dedicated to defeating a powerful boss?

Starscourge Radahn (Fast and Easy Method)

Don’t feel like taking your time and making your way through the game’s golden path naturally? Try this shortcut, which cuts about 20 hours of play down to about two hours.

The Festival of Radahn is triggered by doing certain things in the game. Defeating Godrick and Rennala is the way most players will be able to access it, but you can also activate any Site of Grace in the amber fields of Altus Plateau after getting the right and left halves of the Dectus Medallion and taking the Dectus lift up. So where do you get those, you might ask?

The first (left) side of the medallion is found in Fort Haight in the starting area of Limgrave, only a few minutes ride from your first site of grace. Even better, you don’t actually need to fight any of the enemies! You can run right in, grab the medallion half, and run right out (or die and respawn). Best of all, you can do the same thing when you’re grabbing the right half of the medallion, which is located in Fort Faroth in northern Caelid.

After you’ve grabbed both halves, just head to the Dectus Lift at the north end of Liurnia (on Bellum Highway) and follow the “hoist medallion” prompt. When you’re at the top, ride straight north for a moment and you’ll find a site of grace.

    Now it’s on to Radahn!

Mohg, Lord of Blood (Normal Method)

Here’s where things get a little trickier. Even the “normal” method for accessing Mohg is a bit of a challenge and is pretty far into the game (before I dive into the details, there is one important note: This boss is not the same as Mohg, The Blood Omen, who is located in the sewers of Leyndell). To get to Mohg’s home, Mohgwyn Dynasty Mausoleum, you’ll need to play through a good chunk of the game. Following the so-called golden path of the story, you’ll need to defeat all of the main bosses through Morgott, the Omen King, who is located in the city of Leyndell.

Once Morgott has been downed, you’ll be able to access the Grand Lift of Rold, which will take you up to the snow-covered area called the Forbidden Lands. There’s one twist here: the western part of the Forbidden Lands, called the Consecrated Snowfields, is hidden and requires another special, split medallion. The first part of the medallion is found at Castle Sol in the northern area of the Forbidden Lands and requires you to beat the tough Commander Niall boss to get it.

The other half of the medallion can be found back in southwest Liurnia in an area called Village of the Albinaurics. This can be a little tough to spot at first, as it’s under a massive overhang in the dark (it’s not quite a cave, but it’s not not a cave either). As you work your way through the Village, you’ll hear some moaning coming from a large jar. Roll through it to meet Albus, who gives you the other half of the medallion.

Now that you’ve got both halves, head back to the Grand Lift of Rold. There’s now a second option when you hit the lift that says, “hoist secret medallion”. When you’re standing on the lift platform, press right on the D-pad to see the secret medallion option. Now that you’re up in the Consecrated Showfields, find a site of grace and make your way to the southwest part of the area.

After defeating a bleed-inflicting Sanguine Noble and exploring through the ruins, you’ll find a blood-soaked portal that will take you to Mohg’s area. You’ll still need to fight through his mausoleum to get to Mohg, but it’s not too tough given the level you’ll probably be at.

Mohg, Lord of Blood (Fast-ish and Easy-ish Method)

Don’t feel like playing through 40+ hours to make your way to Mohg’s secret palace the more straightforward (yet still quite labyrinthine) way? There’s another method that you can do right from the start. The first NPC you meet when you come up the elevator to Limgrave, White Mask Varre, is the key to this method.

After you talk to Varre the first time, you’ll need to play the game as normal and defeat Godrick. Once he’s down, Varre will move to the Rose Church in Liurnia, which is on a small island in the western part of the lake. Speaking to Varre there will give you the option to answer that something seems off with the Two Fingers. Doing so will cause Varre to give you several Festering Bloody Fingers, which you can (and should) use to invade other players’ games. You only need to invade their game, not beat or even fight them. Once you invade, just use the Finger Severer to leave and return to your world.

Once you’ve gotten the three invasions done, speak to Varre again and he will reveal himself to be a servant of Mohg and invite you to join the Knights of Luminary Mohg. Respond with the “Anoint me” options and he’ll then give you the Lord of Blood’s Favor item, which you’ll need to soak in the blood of a maiden.

The easiest place to find an already-dead maiden is in The Church of Inhibition. This is located in the northeast corner of Liurnia above the Frenzied Flame Village. Just stroll up to the maiden and select the prompt to soak the Lord of Blood’s Favor. (Note that you can also kill Hyetta, who you’ll meet right next to the first site of grace in Liurnia after clearing Stormveil Castle. However, since she’s also a quest and item giver, it’s not recommended that you do this.)

Whichever source of blood you decide on, you’ll need to return to Varre yet again to give him the blood-soaked Favor. He finally inducts you into the Order and take your finger for good measure, leaving you with the Pureblood Knight’s Medal. Finally! You can now use this item to be teleported to Mohgwyn’s Palace. You can either sprint or fight your way through any enemies you encounter to finally make it to the Dynasty Mausoleum Midpoint site of grace, where you can prep for your battle with Mohg.

    Touch the Withered Arm

After you’ve defeated both Radahn and Mohg, either in a 3-4 hours using the “quick” methods listed above or in 40+ hours using the longer methods, all you need to do to access the Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree DLC content is touch the withered arm hanging out of the cocoon in the area in which you defeated Mohg. Best of luck in the Shadow Realm, Tarnished!

(Once again, if you’re having any trouble defeating Radahn, Mohg, or any of the other dozens of bosses in Elden Ring OR Shadow of the Erdtree, drop KingTut33 a line on Xbox Live and I’ll do my best to help!)

Microsoft Flight Simulator Releases City Update VIII: Las Vegas

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Microsoft Flight Simulator City Update VIII: Las Vegas features one of the world’s most distinctive cities. Las Vegas (“the meadows” in Spanish) traces its name to a Mexican explorer who passed through the area in 1829 and found dense grasslands fed by freshwater springs. Founded on May 15, 1905, the city grew steadily in the following two decades. Its population boomed with Nevada’s 1931 legalization of casino gambling and the start of construction on the nearby Hoover Dam.

Las Vegas is in the Mojave Desert of southern Nevada, surrounded by roughhewn peaks that shimmer in afternoon sunlight. Unofficially known as “The Entertainment Capital of the World,” a key component of the city’s allure is its wide range of architecture, including The Strat, a complex with a 1,149-foot-tall observation tower. Or, visitors can experience the pyramid-shaped Luxor, out of the top of which shines The Luxor Sky Beam, the brightest human-made light in the world. And, the Las Vegas Strip, a stretch of Las Vegas Boulevard in the heart of the city, is vibrant from dusk until dawn.

Microsoft Flight Simulator City Update VIII brings Las Vegas and its myriad facets alive like never before in the world. With this latest offering, simmers can enjoy the sights of Las Vegas rendered in eye-popping resolution, with a fusion of the latest high-resolution aerial imagery, digital elevation model data, and TIN (triangulated irregular network) surface texturing to render the sights.

Microsoft Flight Simulator City Update VIII: Las Vegas is available FREE to all owners of Microsoft Flight Simulator. Ensure that your simulator is running version 1.37.19.0 (or a more recent version), download City Update VIII, and then take-off in your favorite airplane and enjoy the incredible sights of Las Vegas. The sky is calling!

Microsoft Flight Simulator is available for Xbox Series X|S and PC with Xbox Game Pass, PC Game Pass, Windows, and Steam, and on Xbox One and supported mobile phones, tablets, and lower-spec PCs via Xbox Cloud Gaming. • Metroidvania Grappler Rusted Moss Mixes Physics with Creativity

Metroidvania Grappler Rusted Moss Mixes Physics with Creativity

    Reading Time: 5 minutes

Armed with a bouncy grapple hook and an arsenal of guns, swing your way through desolate landscapes in Rusted Moss, an action-packed metroidvania with complex and powerful movement, where the only limit is your creativity and skill.

In this bittersweet tale, humans are at war with the cold and capricious fairies who have invaded their rusting world. You play as Fern, a changeling determined to put an end to the war. Uncover forgotten tales and pick a side – fae or human? The world of Rusted Moss is inspired by our love of English folktales, which portray fairies as malevolent tricksters rather than gentle beings.

Traversal is physics-based and designed to be mastered. Aside from the grappling hook, players can use juicy gun recoil to boost their momentum (think classic FPS action – rocket jumping and bunny hopping).

Gameplay might seem diabolical due to its complexity – players will juggle a physics-based grappling hook with a variety of guns – but Rusted Moss has one of the most powerful traversal mechanics in any metroidvania. A player can break our game so long as they have the skill, determination, and creativity to do so.

Developed by my friend (Emlise), my sister (Sunnydaze), and me (Happysquared), we wanted to create an uncompromising game that prizes player skill and exploration. Rusted Moss is truly nonlinear. Unlocking new regions does not depend on discovering a “key” or getting a new ability. Instead, progression in Rusted Moss is determined by a player’s creativity and capability.

In one platforming challenge, five players each found a different solution!

Did we design that challenge to be solved in five different ways? Not at all. We didn’t design our puzzles to have an “intended” solution. We wanted to encourage players to “break” our game and show us moves we didn’t even consider during Rusted Moss’ development. The open level design, combined with the physics-based movement and momentum, is the perfect playground for players to express their creativity and skill.

We also didn’t want to limit our game to just our vision of how it should be played. Before Rusted Moss’ release, the QA team found a bug that gave players an unintentional movement ability we found hilarious. We decided to keep it in. We hope that perceptive players who discover it get as much joy out of it as we did; it’s a feature, not a bug!

We’ve also included highly customisable accessibility options so players can make the game easier (or harder!). Though we developed Rusted Moss’ default settings to match our own tastes, we really didn’t want to stifle the way some players might prefer to experience our game.

Along with the Xbox release, Rusted Moss is getting 7-8 hours(!) of additional content. Much harder content. It is funny to think about because Emlise had no plans to develop Rusted Moss into a game because she felt its grappling hook would be too difficult for players to grasp (we ended up having to peer pressure her into actually making Rusted Moss). In fact, during the development of Rusted Moss’ base content she had made an extremely difficult challenge course that was cut as it was extremely difficult. However, our playerbase has exceeded all expectations: due to popular demand, this area will be an optional challenge in our major update.

So if there’s anybody raging at that content, please blame our players and not us.

The Xbox release and update will also include a boss rush mode, two new areas of more reasonable difficulty (for the not insane players), and an unlockable playable character! All of this adds seven to eight more hours of additional gameplay.

We worked hard on this update and hope you enjoy it!

With the event coming to a close last week, we caught up with some of Candy Crush’s level designers, as well as Ben Chin, who took on over 15 million competitors to become Candy Crush All-Stars 2024’s overall winner. Together, they gave us a sense of how one of the world’s biggest casual games, open to anyone, can offer a challenge befitting of that million-dollar prize pool.

For Chin, there are some key skills you need to reach the top level: “You definitely need tenacity and endurance. Getting through the different stages leading up to the All Stars finals, it requires a lot of time and effort for sure – especially once you get to those final knockout stages. The last round is 24 hours, and that’s all you have. So you really need to be able to go the distance and be able to pull it out all the way through.”

From a design perspective, the standard of the players involved meant the team needed to create something that feels familiar, but with a new level of challenge, befitting of the ten players who made it all the way through to the grand final.

Candy Crush All-Stars champion, Ben Chin.

“Our inspiration for the All Stars Live Final came from a desire to create something that both honored the classic elements of Candy Crush Saga and introduced new, exciting challenges for our finalists,” explains Lead Level Designer, Therese Sander.

“We wanted to celebrate the journey players have taken with us by offering levels that are visually appealing, but mechanically intriguing,” added Level Designer Oksana Samsonova. “We’ve created nine custom levels for our finalists [with] various challenges – different modes, the newest game mechanics and replicas of some iconic levels from the game.”

Those nine levels required a unique design brief – the team needed to create stages that worked without the usual game economy and boosters that players have available, and each one needed to feel totally distinct, forcing new approaches out of the finalists with each new level. Through extensive manual testing on the team, the level designers emerged with a set of stages that demanded the finalists refine their approach:

“I actually employed multiple different strategies throughout the course of the tournament as well as in the finals” says Chin. “Those things included just being very smart about how you use your moves – when it’s proper to get through a level as quickly as possible versus sticking around a level for as long as possible just to maximise how many points you actually earn per level.”

A selection of Candy Crush All-Stars final levels.

In a way, the finals act as a ‘battle’ between the level designers and the players themselves. With elite players taking on the challenge, the designers are free to create levels that might not feel quite as approachable if you came across them in the regular game.

“While the core game gradually increases in complexity, tournament levels are designed to challenge players’ advanced skills right from the start,” says Sander. “This means incorporating more complex mechanics, requiring quicker thinking, and often demanding a higher level of strategic planning. We aim to create levels that push players to use everything they’ve learned in the game so far and think creatively to overcome new obstacles.”

That complexity meant that Chin had to up his game, even from his own high standards: “When it came to the competitive nature of it, you really have to take a look, observe the level and, really identify, ‘OK, I have a limited set of time and moves and different objectives. I’ve got blockers in my way. What are the blockers?’ I’ve never planned more than in this tournament. I think that’s going to carry over into the future of me playing this game.”

That’s exactly the goal for the designers: “The most rewarding part is seeing the joy and excitement players experience when they play the levels. Watching players discover new strategies, overcome challenges, and share their experiences is incredibly fulfilling,” says Samsonova.

And in turn, watching the game’s best players take on their levels should lead to even more exciting designs later: “Watching elite-level players tackle our stages has been incredibly insightful,” Samsonova continues. “These players often employ strategies and techniques that we hadn’t anticipated, showcasing the depth and potential of our game mechanics.”

“Observing their gameplay helps us understand how to design levels that are challenging yet fair, and it also inspires us to create new mechanics that can provide even deeper and more complex gameplay experiences,” adds Sander. “It’s always fascinating to see how creative and strategic players can be!”

It makes Candy Crush All-Stars a truly unique tournament, elevating a game enjoyed by hundreds of millions – at many skill levels – into something competitive at an incredibly high standard. For Chin – who says he can’t pinpoint the moment he realized he was playing at an elite level – it’s been a revelation:

“For me personally, I’ve always been a pretty competitive gamer, amongst other games as well. And originally for Candy Crush, it was kind of my time-killer game until the possibility of coming out here to compete was available. Being able to just put all the time and effort into it, and being able to play against other people who are similarly as good as each other, it was a lot of fun and it was very exciting. And I think that excitement was really what sets that apart from just playing casually.”

It’s been a banner moment for Chin, who can now call himself the world’s greatest Candy Crush player: “It was such an overwhelming feeling at first just to be up there and even considered one of the top ten in the world. I was so honoured to be among them and interact with all of them. We all have the passion of playing Candy Crush together, and being able to bond over that was absolutely incredible.”

  • A Deep Dive into the Supernatural Threats and Secrets of New World: Aeternum

A Deep Dive into the Supernatural Threats and Secrets of New World: Aeternum

    Reading Time: 5 minutes

Explore a cursed island plagued by mystery when New World: Aeternum comes to Xbox Series X|S on October 15. In search of rumored riches on the eternal isle of Aeternum, you shipwreck and are plunged into the depths of an immortal spiral. Its strange inhabitants pulled in by the winds of opportunity, or so you thought.

Learn the ways of the island’s increasingly savage, supernatural cycle and forge your story to uncover the truth lurking behind Aeternum’s perpetual conflicts in this thrilling action-RPG set during the twilight of the Age of Exploration.

    Pursue Your Ambition

Conflict and bizarre happenings in Aeternum date back further than anyone can remember. But a loss of memory is only one of the many fates worse than death that you’ll encounter throughout your travels. Some give into the seductive whispers of power and turn into a mindless Corrupted, while others lose their sense of purpose and become a soulless Lost. Many even go mad after recovering from death after death.

Isabella is an intrepid explorer that ventured to the island in pursuit of Azoth, the source of magic in Aeternum. Possessed by the insatiable evil of the Corrupted, she now creeps ever closer to spreading the corruption’s ghastly influence beyond Aeternum. The coastal storms have grown worse, countless adventurers wash ashore daily, and an ominous presence lurks around every village. To stop her, you’ll need to successfully navigate the island’s restless terrain as well as different adversaries.

    Forge Your Story

Your curious voyage starts with character creation. That customization then extends to outfits, weapons, tools, mounts, camp skins, and emotes. Solve every mystery surrounding Aeternum solo or with friends for a completely different experience. There are also Trade Skills like Cooking, Fishing, Musical Instruments, Crafting, and many more that grant various bonuses and further immerse you in your favorite aspects of the game. Need some extra coin for a house? Put on a musical performance and gather tips at the nearest settlement. Want more coin for your Company to buy matching Flail skins? Create your own furniture and sell it.

Companies are organized groups of adventurers that can team up for both competitive and cooperative activities. To join another player’s Company, you’ll first have to be in the same Faction. Early on, you’ll have the choice to join either the Marauders, the Syndicate, or the Covenant. All three Factions have unique values, colors, and philosophies, complete with their own quests and schemes. Maybe you’ll join the Marauders because you love the color green, the Syndicate because you share their passion for knowledge, or the Covenant because your friends did. This is your story, so there’s never a wrong choice.

Faction members can help you complete quests and fend off danger throughout Aeternum. Your fellow members might gift you gear for easier progression, take a few swings at powerful enemies, or revive you in chance encounters while traveling to their next destination. Lend a hand to help your Faction thrive.

    Carve Your Destiny

Aeternum constantly changes at the hands of those in power. Whether you fight the Corrupted, the Lost, or another Faction, you can overcome any foe after stumbling across a mysterious box in your ship’s wreckage. To better ease you into the unique timing and positioning of every weapon, you’ll pick a character archetype at the start of your adventure. Each of the seven character archetypes includes two weapons and a few initial Trade Skill boosts, plus multiple skill trees with customizable abilities. Mix and match different options until you find the perfect combination for your playstyle:

    • Executioner: Great Axe and War Hammer
    • Musketeer: Rapier and Musket
    • Mystic: Void Gauntlet and Life Staff
    • Occultist: Fire Staff and Ice Gauntlet
    • Ranger: Spear and Bow
    • Soldier: Longsword with Shield and Hatchet
    • Swordbearer: Greatsword and Blunderbuss

Beyond the main story quest, there are many horrors of Aeternum for you to vanquish. Hunt a colossal Sandwurm in one of the game’s challenging Trials, unearth some of the island’s darkest secrets in Expeditions and banish otherworldly demons during seasonal events. As you piece together the lore around each bad omen, you’ll better understand the troubled history of the eternal isle. There’s always another threat skulking about Aeternum, not to mention numerous ways for you to personalize your approach.

We look forward to new ambitions, secrets, and threats coming to the eternal isle through future adventurers. What story will you bring to the island? New World: Aeternum is available for pre-order now. Check out the New World: Aeternum website for more information.

  • Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun: Breathing Retro Life into the Cast of Enemies

Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun: Breathing Retro Life into the Cast of Enemies

    Reading Time: 5 minutes

Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun is a fast-paced, retro-inspired FPS that comes with buckets of pixelated gore. Taking on the role of a Space Marine, players previously had the chance to blast their way through a variety of Warhammer 40,000 inspired environments, and now we’re thrilled to announce the next expansion to our boomer-shooter saga!

Boltgun: Forges of Corruption offers more enemies, more levels, and even more mayhem, so with that in mind, let’s take a closer look at everything that goes into crafting the perfect outlet for your righteous rage… the enemies!

    Choosing the Best

The Warhammer 40,000 universe is full of incredible character art, and the team here at Auroch were spoilt for choice when it came to picking a cast of enemies. Using initial design requirements as a guide, the first step was to collect as much reference as we could. This helped to confirm things like size, colours, details, and even which weapons or items to include. Shots of real life miniatures made this task even easier, and the Games Workshop website proved to be extremely useful.

    Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun DLC Image

    Shapes are Important

Once a good library of reference has been established, the process of creating a retro enemy sprite can begin. It starts with a conventional method you’d find in most other games, by modelling a 3d mesh. However, we pay special attention to the overall shapes of our characters, pushing things like heroic proportions and creating silhouettes that players can easily identify. In Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun, enemies are shown from the front a majority of the time, so we always ensure the front view captures them in their best light.

    Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun DLC Image

    Exaggerated Angles

In a similar way to how we model characters, things on the animation side tend to focus on exaggerated poses and frame timing that really sells the intent of an animation. In order to capture that ‘retro’ magic, we use minimal frames, so it’s important to pack all the visual information we want into a tiny, animated space. The impact point of a crushing punch can be held slightly longer, or the juddering of weapon’s rapid fire can be sped up into a chaotic blur. This level of single frame control is almost like working with stop motion.

    Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun DLC Image

    Special FX

Once an enemy has been modeled, animated and rendered, we start working on the FX. This step adds dynamism and interactivity, and the way we use FX for enemy attacks are particularly important. Not only do they need to look amazing, but there’s a set of game mechanics that should be followed. Certain weapons fire at different speeds, projectiles have different trails, and explosions have different sizes. All enemy attacks in Boltgun come in three distinct types, magical Tzeentch, organic Nurgle or combustible human, and it’s important for players to be able to visually distinguish between them, using colours, shapes, and various other artistic techniques.

    Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun DLC Image

    Blood and Guts

One of the cornerstones of Boltgun is its stylistic gore, and the most satisfying way of bringing our enemies to life is seeing the crimson mess that results when they expire. We’ve built a gore system in a way that enables players to effectively ‘paint’ sections of our levels with the red of previous battles, something that’s both awesome, and can be useful as a pathfinding tool. Lastly, each enemy comes complete with a set of custom body parts, or ‘gibs’ as we like to call them. These have a habit of bursting outwards when an enemy has been destroyed, offering just one more level of detail to the interactive package that is your typical Warhammer 40,000 : Boltgun enemy.

    Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun DLC Image

    A Place to Call Home

Finally, what good would combining all the amazing elements above be without giving our enemies a proper place to live? We use visual theming to really set the scene. A sickly green haze suggests an area infested by Nurgle, where as the chaotic purple of the warp means the presence of Tzeentch is near. We also use decals to add extra detail to floors and walls, giving players the impression that they’re moving from one territory to the next. And lastly, a well thought-out prop library can really help with the storytelling aspect of a map.

As the game progresses, players may notice evidence of previous conflicts such as fortifications, military supplies, corpses, sacrificial shrines, and much more. Adding things like this helps to make the experience of encountering enemies in Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun feel more alive and real.

    Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun DLC Image

So now you’ve been given an insight into some of the tips and tricks the team here at Auroch uses to create AI for players to blast away at or run screaming from. We’ve worked hard to customize the standard character art pipeline you’d see in most modern games, and produced a result we’re proud to say is one of the cornerstones of Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun’s unique retro aesthetic.

Unleash your mighty wrath in Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun DLC: Forges of Corruption, out now on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC for $5,99! For newcomers, a special edition containing the base game and the DLC is also available for $24,99. Enjoy Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC and Xbox Game Pass!

The all-electric powertrain will put its 320 bhp to work and to make the 5 N vanish right in front of your eyes as it reaches 100 kmh from a standstill in 4.5 seconds.

The GR is quite hot, actually: a daredevilish four-wheel drive system to make quick work of corners, a very eager 2.1-liter turbocharged engine that puts out 257 bhp, and a six-speed manual transmission to experience corner taking like a true champion built to smash the giants of the track.

Drive around the Horizon Festival in the new benchmark for modern hatchbacks and create your own special build of the versatile vehicle.

2023 Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo Turbo S

Earn 20 PTS during Week 4 “Spring” Season on the Modern Horizons Festival Playlist. Available from July 11 until July 15

Picture it: the echo of eons of Porsche’s magnificent history added to modern electric technology and comfort of an all-wheel-drive SUV. You don’t have to imagine it anymore: it’s the 2023 Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo Turbo S,: Porsche’s all-electric sports utility vehicle.

As the name implies, this Taycan shares a lot of aspects and components with its sedan counterpart. However, the electric SUV comes with two engines that output 750 horses as soon as you touch that pedal. You will cruise so comfortably inside; you’d probably forget that this vehicle can reach 100 kmh in just 2.4 seconds.

Porsche reaps the past by adding elements of its racing legacy into this model which perfectly contrasts with the new generation additions such as touch screens and, of course, the completely modern electric power train bringing the racing history of the brand into the modern era.

  • What Void Bastards Fans Need to Know About Wild Bastards

What Void Bastards Fans Need to Know About Wild Bastards

    Reading Time: 5 minutes

If you fell in love with 2019’s Void Bastards, get ready to expand your horizons with our new first-person shooter, Wild Bastards. Wild Bastards continues Void Bastards’ great mix of strategy and shooting action, but adds more on almost every front.

In Void Bastards, you played as one of an endless series of prisoners, each with their own traits, but otherwise identical. In Wild Bastards, you choose from a gang of 13 unique outlaws, each of whom has their own voice, place in the gang, relationships with the others and, most importantly, embodies a very different playstyle.

    Wild Bastards Screenshot

Hopalong is a slithering lizard-man who wields a strangling lasso. He demands a stealthy, close range playstyle. While he’s very powerful against small numbers of tough enemies, he can quickly get overwhelmed by more numerous foes.

In contrast, Smoky is a chef who was consumed by his cooking fires. He’s now able to project flames from his fingertips, setting enemies and the environment afire. By creating walls of flame he’s easily able to manage swarming enemies like Kyotes, but he has trouble with enemies that can’t be funneled into kill-zones, like the teleporting Assassins or the burrowing Rattlers.

    Wild Bastards Screenshot

The outlaw you choose, the planet you choose to beam them down onto, and which outlaws you pair together before entering a showdown will play a huge role in your success. You will need to juggle outlaw fatigue, injuries, relationships and match-ups against the enemies you’re likely to face. Just as in Void Bastards, Wild Bastards demands strategic thinking as well as shooting skills. But now, you’ll need to reboot that thinking with a whole host of new concerns.

In Void Bastards, you piloted your tiny pod through a hostile nebula, choosing which derelict ship to enter and which to pass by. In Wild Bastards, your gang flies through the galaxy, choosing which planets to visit and which to avoid. Once on the planet, you’ll divide your outlaws into bunches and ride from location to location, gathering loot while making the best use of opportunities on the planet and avoiding the patrolling guards and critters where you can.

    Wild Bastards Screenshot

Each planet will present you with new challenges and opportunities. Sierra planets are mountainous with long sight lines but snowbanks can interfere with your movement both around the planet and within a showdown. Don’t get stuck in the snow when one of the Princes pursuing you arrives or you might find yourself tossed into a battle where the odds are really stacked against you!

On the other hand, Hostile worlds feature low gravity, which allows you to easily leap up onto terrain to get a height advantage. But watch out for Yellowbellies who can shoot right through the atmospheric domes that are common here.

    Wild Bastards Screenshot

Whatever the world, once you enter a first-person showdown, you’ll find the same intense shooter action that you did in Void Bastards, but amped up with a host of new features: more guns, more enemies, outlaw-specific special powers, per-pixel hit detection, a much greater range of enemy behaviors and animations, more enemy types, outdoor combat arenas, power-ups and much more.

We haven’t even mentioned mods that you can equip on your outlaws, aces that provide permanent buffs for each member of the gang, the procedural campaign or the custom challenges that unlock once you complete the campaign. Yes, there’s much more to do, strategize and manage in Wild Bastards!

Wild Bastards is a brand new strategy shooter that takes the Void Bastards formula in a wildly different direction, coming to Xbox Series X|S on September 12, 2024.

    Xbox Live

    Wild Bastards

    Maximum Entertainment

    $34.99 $29.74

From the veteran team behind Void Bastards and Card Hunter, Wild Bastards has you travel from planet to planet to recruit, manage and gun sling with a team of 13 outlaws, each of whom has their own weaponry, special power, and growth tree. On planets, you’ll wrangle loot and start showdowns that are then played out in intense, bite-sized shootouts. The Wild Bastards were the most deadly gang in the galaxy until a posse from the puritanical magnate Jebediah Chaste eliminated one outlaw after another. Faced with their own mortality, the two remaining members have teamed up with the Drifter, a mysterious sentient spacecraft, to find and resurrect the dead gang members as they flee to the mythical Homestead. Key Features Heart-Pounding Showdowns – Prove you’re the ultimate gunslinger by blasting an array of enemies in bullet-flying shootouts. Tactical FPS Combat – Use your wits to overcome crafty enemies that utilize cover, flank you, and employ a huge variety of special moves from teleportation to homing poisonous quills. Strategize for Victory – Evaluate each planet’s terrain, enemies, and traits before selecting which gang members you want to land there. Collect items, level up, and use special locations carefully to turn the odds in your favor! 13 Outlaws to Play – Rebuild a gang of 13 outlaws, each with their own unique weapon, stunt, personality, relationships, and ability tree. Build & Maintain Relationships – The gang know each other well, but that doesn’t mean they like each other. It’s your job to manage their dynamic relationships, but good luck getting feuding outlaws to ride together. Keep The Gang Thriving – Accumulate resources to heal injured gang members, level up characters, improve relationships, and more. An Ever-Changing, Lawless Galaxy – Roam the procedurally-generated galactic sectors and planets with varying parameters such as gravity, terrain features, weather, and more. Challenge Mode – After completing the main campaign, a challenge mode unlocks to offer a sequence of challenge sectors with increasingly difficult levels and mutators to modify the play experience.

  • Indiana Jones and the Great Circle: New Details Revealed on the Official Xbox Podcast

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle: New Details Revealed on the Official Xbox Podcast

    Reading Time: 8 minutes

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle made a grand appearance at Xbox Games Showcase 2024 last weekend, showing off new gameplay, revealing new elements of the story, and treating us to an extended scene set in the Himalayas, as Indiana and new companion Gina attempt to recover a relic while avoid the clutches of colonel Viktor Gantz.

On a special episode of the Official Xbox Podcast, host Malik Prince got to talk more about the trailer and the wider game, joined by MachineGames’ Jerk Gustafsson, Game Director, and John Jennings, Production Director. If you want to watch the full interview, check it out below – or read on for the new details.

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zakV_ou6i_U?feature=oembed&w=500&h=281]

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle’s development is in full swing, and what we’ve seen of the game promises a truly authentic Indiana Jones adventure – both in storyline and gameplay.

“The story kicks off when an ancient relic is stolen from the college where Indiana Jones works,” explained Gustafsson. “He’s determined to track down the thief, and he stumbles into this ancient conspiracy involving the theory of the Great Circle, as we call it. The Great Circle is a strange alignment of ancient sites around the globe, and a set of mysterious artifacts connect to it. But Indy isn’t the only one in search of answers. The enemy are scouring the world for these artifacts, believing that they hold some kind of power – and to stop them there’s only one thing he can do, and that is to find the artifacts first.”

This kicks us off on a classic globe-trotting adventure, beginning in the corridors of Indy’s beloved Marshall College, before taking in the Himalayas, the ancient jungle sites of Sukhothai in Thailand, the Vatican (an all-new location for an Indiana Jones project), the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt, and more. It’s the kind of set-up you’d hope for from an Indiana Jones story, but it stemmed from a perhaps unexpected source:

“It actually started with an idea from [Bethesda Game Studios director and executive producer] Todd Howard,” said Gustafsson. “He had been thinking for years about creating a story around the concept of the Great Circle, so when we got this opportunity to work on an Indiana Jones game it felt like the perfect match.”

Of course, that idea was just the starting point, and the team at MachineGames has worked incredibly closely with Lucasfilm Games to ensure that their original adventure would feel faithful to movies it sits alongside.

“We spent countless hours just rewatching the films – especially the two movies that are closest to the game, which are Raiders of the Lost Ark and the Last Crusade,” said Gustafsson. “In addition, we have one of the best resources through our partnership with Lucasfilm Games, and working together with them on this project has been invaluable, just this cave of knowledge about the character, which has been fantastic.”

“It’s been great having access to writers, art directors from Lucasfilm, people who worked with the Indiana Jones property for decades,” continued Jennings. “Having their input – I mean, some of these people know everything that has ever been written about Indy – and having them to bounce ideas off, and get some of their own input has been hugely, hugely invaluable.”

That partnership came with perks for fans on the team, too: “We managed to get access into some of the Lucasfilm archives as well,” said Jennings, “which for Indy fans has been an absolute dream come true, to get access to some of these things that perhaps not so many people have seen.”

The research has been deep. Writers and artists on the team studied not just the films, but comics and books, not to mention had recreations of Indy’s costume created – including his iconic fedora, reproduced by the same hatmaker that created the original for Raiders of the Lost Ark. On the musical side, longtime Lucasfilm Games collaborator Gordy Haab (who recently won a Grammy for his work on the Star Wars Jedi: Survivor soundtrack) has been brought in to create a score John Williams would be proud of.

That authenticity extends to the characters involved, too. While most of the cast will be brand new faces for the franchise, the latest trailer showed us more of Indy’s friend, Marcus Brody: “Because we start the story in Marshall College it made sense to have Marcus there, to sort of ground it in the familiarity of Indy’s home base,” said Gustafsson – before going onto tease that we’ll see cameos from other classic characters along the way, too.

Of course, the most important element for authenticity was in getting Indy himself right, and the team found a perfect partner in renowned actor Troy Baker:

“It was maybe an unexpected choice at first, but from the moment we watched his audition tape we were just totally sold,” said Jennings. “He’s just a great actor. He’s put so much effort into the role as well – you can tell he’s just this huge, huge fan of Indiana Jones […] We’ve just been in a [voiceover] session recently with him, and he was improvising lines. You know, ‘Wouldn’t Indy say it a bit more like this?’ Or commenting on lines that we’ve written that we thought were subtle Easter Eggs just for the die-hard Indy fans, and he’ll pick up on it straight away.”

Baker’s performance doesn’t just extend to a great impression of Harrison Ford, either. “He’s not just a voiceover actor, he’s the full thing,” Jennings continued. “We do full performance capture: the body, the face, and the voice all recorded at the same time. And he’s got the physical acting nailed down as well. He does a really, really good job of capturing the character of Indy – specifically his character in the first few movies, the earlier ones, which is where our game is set of course. He just does it perfectly.”

This has been a new kind of development process for MachineGames, and that extends to the game itself. “It’s a little bit different, this game, for us, in many ways,” said Gustafsson. “We are very used to having heavy weapons, gun-blazing shooters – and this is a little bit different. We are making a proper adventure game here.”

While the team’s acclaimed Wolfenstein games were brutal, frenetic shooters, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle offers an experience more befitting of the world’s most famous archaeologist.

“He solves problems with his mind first and really relies on smarts, and not this excessive combat that we have seen or done before with the Wolfenstein games,” explained Gustafsson. “When you are playing the game, choosing the more authentic stealthy Indy route – or just some classic old fist-fighting – will be a benefit to the player more times than not, and also make for a very fun and challenging experience.”

In playing as Indy, we’re not rampaging through the world, but stopping to solve puzzles, and trying to avoid conflict when we can. The team wanted to avoid turning the character we know into a superhero.

“He is flawed, he makes mistakes, he stumbles, there is weight to his movement, and we have this gritty, pulpy edge to the action,” continued Gustafsson. “But at the same time he’s also rather athletic, he’s an excellent fighter, and he also has an enormous amount of luck as well – and at the same time he’s the best archaeologist in the world. So focusing on all of these things, in a way it makes the game feel in line with these classic matinee action-adventures that the movies were celebrating, something I think Indy himself also personifies in a way.”

To do that, the game will primarily be set in first-person – a perspective that MachineGames is very familiar with, a key way to help players feel like they’re truly walking in his shoes, and an exciting point of difference when looking at the wider action-adventure genre as a whole. In key moments, however, we will see the character in third-person, letting us live those filmic moments from the outside.

And speaking of filmic moments, the trailer ended with a callback to perhaps one of the most famous sequences in movie history – Indy’s rolling boulder escape. We had to ask how that made it into the game, and whether we’ll be able to play it. But Gustafsson wanted to keep some mystery before Indiana Jones and the Great Circle arrives:

“That’s unfortunately one of those things where I just have to say: ‘You’ll have to wait and see.’”

Play Indiana Jones and the Great Circle day one on Game Pass when it launches later this year on Xbox Series X|S and PC.

  • Brutality and Stealth Are at the Heart of Assassin’s Creed Shadows

Brutality and Stealth Are at the Heart of Assassin’s Creed Shadows

    Reading Time: < 1 minute

We’re then guided through what an assassination looks like with the samurai Yasuke, who in this instance channels the Juggernaut from the X-men, crashing through doors and structures, slicing down guards, and easily dispatching his target with a swift stab to the gut. That isn’t to suggest that Naoe only must lean on stealth – she’s more than equipped to face guards head-on with her mix of agility and area of effect weapons like the Kusarigama (a chain-sickle) that keeps enemies at a distance, allowing her to methodically eliminate each enemy one at a time.

Beyond the combat, one element that I’m really interested to see how Assassin’s Creed Shadows handles will be the fact that we get to play as a historical figure for the first time as the Samurai, Yasuke. The fictional world of Assassin’s Creed has always been a stellar tale, from elaborate yarns that span everything from Templars to aliens, so seeing how they place him within this universe is going to be exciting to experience.

Grand Prix Story is Now Available on Xbox – Create your Own Strongest Team

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Have you ever admired a sports car that cuts through the wind?

Grand Prix Story, available for pre-order today, is a simulation game that puts you in the role of a race team owner and manager. Modify your car, train your staff, build a powerful team, and aim for the Grand Prix.

    GPS starting line

When you hear it’s a racing game, you might think that it requires control skills. This game is a little different in that you don’t control the steering wheel during the race. The steering wheel of the car is held by the racer you have trained.

We love simulation games, so we decided to leave control of the car to the characters and let the players focus on managing their team. Once your car is ready, enter the race, and let’s keep an eye on them.

Even if you are not in control of the car yourself, you will feel the excitement of the race as it unfolds. While cheering on your team, observe the cars in action and analyze them for the next race.

And that’s not the only appeal of a racing game where players don’t drive. If you increase the size of your team, you can run two cars at the same time.

Racers on your team may compete against each other for the championship and it’s going to be hard to decide which one to root for.

    GPS raceway

To win a race, the driver’s technique is of course necessary, but the mechanic’s ability is also important. If you secure talented people, research the car, and improve the parts, the performance of the car will increase dramatically, and you will be able to show off your car’s overwhelming acceleration and brilliant curves that will overwhelm those around you.

Your management skills, such as contracting sponsors and raising funds, will determine the fate of your team.

Aim for the best racing team in the world!

  • World of Warcraft: The War Within Is Coming – Why Now Is the Time to Play for the First Time

World of Warcraft: The War Within Is Coming – Why Now Is the Time to Play for the First Time

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

World of Warcraft’s The War Within expansion got a release date during the Xbox Games Showcase 2024 – coming to PC via Battle.net on August 26, this expansion will be the first part of a trilogy of expansions known as The Worldsoul Saga, diving deep into the mythology of World of Warcraft.

To celebrate, Official Xbox Podcast host Malik Prince teamed up with World of Warcraft community manager and WoWCast host Bethany Stout to interview World of Warcraft Executive Producer Holly Longdale and Game Director Ion Hazzikostas, finding out more about this expansion, and why now is a perfect moment to jump into the game for the very first time. You can watch the entire interview below, or read on for all the key details.

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ex3XIFgoESo?feature=oembed&w=500&h=281]

Of course, it’s something new to see World of Warcraft on an Xbox podcast. “We’re just super excited to be part of Xbox now, coming from Blizzard,” said Longdale. “And we’re representing a PC game, World of Warcraft, so we’re super excited to be here, and we want to share with all the Xbox fans that we’re here to stay. We’ve been around for 20 [years] – we’re not your dad’s game, we’re not your mom’s game – and we’re going to be around for 20 more at least. We want to invite everybody into this incredible experience.”

Part of that invitation comes with the game’s free trial, allowing you to explore the world and level up all the way to level 20. But there’s a new option to do so with the Welcome to Azeroth bundle. Including everything players need to begin their adventure in Azeroth, this offers the current expansion, Dragonflight, a level 60 character boost, and 60 days of game time for $24.99 USD.

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5JEqjsfIxfQ?start=1&feature=oembed&w=500&h=281]

That bundle has been carefully-chosen to help you get ready for the upcoming expansion: “We’ve really done a lot over the last 20 years to ensure that 20 years of content is not 20 years of obstacles that you have to overcome to get to the latest, coolest thing,” said Hazzikostas. “When War Within comes out, Dragonflight, the current expansion, will be what you play through to level up and jump right into War Within. That will give you the power, give you an understanding of the mechanics, you’ll have a dragon companion that you’ll earn very early on […] and it’s also going to prepare you story-wise for what The War Within is going to bring.”

It all makes The War Within a great marker for when to start playing WoW – as the beginning of a brand-new, three-expansion saga, this is a new story that even seasoned veterans will be discovering for the first time. And that story is already being told ahead of the expansion’s August 26 launch:

“In the lead-up to War Within, there’s already stuff going on in World of Warcraft at this very minute,” said Hazzikostas. “Xal’atath – the villain that you saw at the end of that [Xbox Games Showcase] cinematic – has emerged into the world, and her tendrils are branching throughout Azeroth, weaving dark plans that are going to threaten us. It’s exciting to have that build-up to that launch moment.”

When it does kick off, The War Within will introduce brand new zones to explore: leading players under the surface of Azeroth into Dwarven caverns, taking them to the beautiful Hallowfall Canyon (with airship travel to get around), and into Azj-Kahet, the home of one of World of Warcraft’s most powerful civilizations, the Nerubian Empire. Incidentally, Nerubians are an intelligent race of arachnids  – and The War Within will offer an arachnophobia option to replace their models with (friendlier-looking) crabs.

We’ll also get a new feature called Warbands, which will allow players to switch between multiple characters without having to replay swathes of the expansion. Delves will offer a new dungeon experience, allowing for smaller, shorter dungeon crawls, even for solo players. For bigger dungeons, which often require you to play with others, The War Within will offer AI characters for those who can’t play with a party.

The War Within is doubly special for Blizzard, as it marks the 20th anniversary of World of Warcraft, and it’s an opportunity to look at how different kinds of players approach the game, and build something for all of them: “This is a huge year for World of Warcraft in general,” said Hazzikostas. “It’s really humbling to reflect upon my own relationship with the game, but really just to look back at the journey that we’ve taken as a development team with our community. We’re a game that has grown and evolved as our community has.

“I think not everyone has that time to spare these days – we’re all busy, we all have a lot of responsibilities, but we want to maintain a relationship, or build a new one, with this world that’s been special for so many people. [It’s] evolved over the years to keep that depth for those who want to seek it, but [we’re] making sure that there’s a wide range of levels of commitment and relationship you can have with the game and still have an epic, fulfilling experience.”

“What you saw [in the Xbox Games Showcase] cinematic was a celebration of the past 20 years, and the journey of our story over the past 20 years,” said Longdale. If you want to join in those celebrations – whether you’re a committed player, someone looking to return, or a total newcomer – now’s the time.

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

The Xbox Insider Program is excited to announce that—starting today—the Palworld Update Preview is available for all Xbox Insiders. Joining the Palworld Update Preview will give Xbox Insiders early access to new features and game updates. This version of Palworld is fully compatible with existing saves, so everyone can continue exploring Palpagos with your already collected (and leveled!) Pals!

New content in Palworld Update Preview!

Pocketpair has been hard at work and are now ready to deliver the much-requested dedicated server feature to all Palworld Update Preview participants on both Xbox and Windows. Players can now connect to both Official and Community Dedicated Servers. Create your own server, invite your friends, and adventure across Palpagos in your very own private Palworld instance. The Pocketpair team is very excited to bring this feature to the Xbox ecosystem, and they can’t wait for Xbox Insiders to try it out, along with gathering feedback.

    Sounds cool, but what’s Palworld?

Great question! Palworld is an open-world, survival, and crafting game by the wonderful folks over at Pocketpair. In Palworld, you will collect and work alongside mysterious creatures known as “Pals” to explore the Palpagos Islands. Build a base of operations, farm for rare resources and materials, and battle other Pal tamers with over 100 unique Pals that can join your adventures. You can even bring your friends along too as Palworld supports multiplayer for the ultimate Palworld experience.

    Awesome! How do I join?

NOTE: To participate in the Palworld Update Preview, you will need to either own Palworld OR have access to the title via an active Game Pass subscription.

    2. Navigate to Previews > Palword Update Preview.
    3. Select Join.
    4. Wait for registration to complete, and you should be directed to the correct Store Page to install the preview.

NOTE: If you already have Palworld installed, please restart your console or PC after the registration has completed to ensure you get prompted to update to the Palworld Update Preview version.

NOTE: If you wish to revert to the publicly available version of Palworld, you will need to leave the Palworld Update Preview via the Xbox Insider Hub. This will prompt an update reversion to occur.

I’d like one dedicated server please!

If you’re looking to set up a dedicated server, please refer to this documentation provided by Pocketpair.

NOTE: Launching the dedicated server software might require updating to the latest DirectX and/or C++ Runtimes dependent upon user’s machine.

Something isn’t working. I need help!

If you experience any issues while playing Palworld Update Preview, please use “Report a problem” so we can investigate. (Note: This is only for Xbox consoles.)

    1. Hold down the home button on your Xbox controller.
    2. Select Report a problem.
