Unveil the true power of the Cretaceous period with four new species
See how these fascinating dinosaurs are brought to life in-game
Out Now on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One
Introduce four ferocious new predators to your parks with Jurassic World Evolution 2: Cretaceous Predator Pack! This latest update brings four extraordinary species to the game that are sure to stop your parks guests in their tracks. Manage and control these striking dinosaurs as they fight for dominance in your parks and search for their next meal.
Bringing these fascinating dinosaurs to Jurassic World Evolution 2 requires a lot of work from our talented team, and in this post, we’re going to show you how each species is brought to life, from start to finish.
Gigantoraptor
Let’s start with the Gigantoraptor, the hero from our Key Art and my favourite from the update. This is the largest known Oviraptorosaur from the Late Cretaceous era and features a stunning coat of feathers and large elongated legs.
Before we can start modelling any of the species, the art team creates a concept for the design approach to the dinosaur. To kick things off we’ll produce some initial concepts on the shape of the species, paying special attention to any standout elements. In this case we focus on the Gigantoraptors legs, height, neck, feathers, and head. This is used as a starting point for the design and a foundation to make sure we get the important features nailed down early on. You can also see in this step that we have a few variations on how the feathers might look, something we continue to experiment with in the next step.
After step one, we put together some additional concepts to explore other options. As you can see below, we are adding in some extra parts to the Gigantoraptors design such as more feathers on the head, thinner wings, and some extra pattern variations on the body. Once this crucial step is complete, the team then has a selection of concepts to pick from and build the final design.
Next, we take a closer look at the head of the Gigantoraptor. The team will design a variety of head shapes, using bones, eye positions, beak layout, and feather formation to produce a mix of options. Once we’ve settled on an approach to the head, the Gigantoraptors shape is locked in, and we can then move onto the final stage of the design process.
Bringing the best elements from each step we build the final concept of the Gigantoraptor. In this reference below you can see one of the colour variations for the species. Our approach to colour is just as important as the previous steps. The team will use information we have about the species and combine that with real-world references of other animals and their colour patterns. This helps us form a realistic approach to the colour and patterns of these stunning species.
Concavenator
The next dinosaur we’ll look at is the Concavenator and although we’ll take a similar step by step approach to its design, each species has different challenges and characteristics that we need to focus on.
The Concavenator has a unique silhouette, so in these early stages of the design we wanted to focus heavily on its shape to make sure we faithfully represent the species. It’s also important that the dinosaurs we design fit within the Jurassic World franchise. The Concavenator appears in the background of Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom as a statue in Lockwood Manor, so we used this as one of our many references when designing the model. Finally, in these early stages we’ll also include some initial measurements in our concepts, this helps as a guide for the team to see how this particular dinosaur will stack up against other in-game items, dinosaurs, and environments.
Once we have the overall shape locked in, we’ll then start to add some additional details to the dinosaur. A notable feature on the Concavenator is the two narrow humps on its back, formed by extremely large vertebrae. Sometimes when we’re designing a dinosaur that has such a distinct shape, we’ll have an additional step in the design process to explore ways of approaching this. In this case we had two different designs for the back, design A features the humps being significantly taller and B has the same design but shorter.
Finally, we bring it all together! Real-world fossils of the Concavenator feature structures that resemble quill knobs, so you’ll see in this final step we’ve added some to the design. This agile predator is a great addition to the game, and I can’t wait to see how players introduce them to their parks.
Utahraptor
Our third fierce predator in this pack is the Utahraptor. This is one of the largest known dromaeosaurs, so we had a lot of references on how to approach this design. In this first and second stage of the concept you’ll see that we’ve included some early examples to show how it would look when moving. This gives the team an opportunity to explore how the tail, neck and overall body stance would change with movement. We also included detailed concepts of the Utahraptor’s face, looking at the scales on its nose and how the feathers form. These detailed designs are integral to the team so we can create highly detailed models later on.
Towards the end of the design process, we will have a final highly detailed drawing of the Utahraptor, bringing in all the key elements of the species into one concept. This will act as the base plate moving forward for the colour and pattern variations.
Lastly, we’ll bring it all together with a final pattern design that players can then enjoy in-game and customise in their parks. Our main inspiration for this species were birds of prey and how their feathers and colours influencer their look and fierceness.
Tarbosaurus
Our last addition with this pack is the Tarbosaurus. This design is heavily inspired by the Universal Pictures, Amblin Entertainment and DreamWorks Animation Netflix Show, Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous: Hidden Adventure. We worked closely with our fantastic partners at Universal to create an accurate model of this species so fans of both the game and the show can enjoy this dinosaur in their parks.
With the shape and approach to the model complete we spent some time looking at colour and pattern variations for the Tarbosaurus, focusing on a couple favourite designs with multiple variations and then a few distinctly different alternatives. This gargantuan hunter looks fantastic in-game and will be a great fit for any large tyrannosaurine sections of players parks.
The team have done a brilliant job at bringing these exciting species to life in-game and we’re thrilled that players can now get their hands on them! Jurassic World Evolution 2: Cretaceous Predator Pack is available today on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One.

Blackpink comes to KartRider: Drift with specially designed characters, karts, and cosmetics
Mainstream collaboration aims to catapult the KartRider franchise to new players
Interview with KartRider: Drift director Jaewoo Seo to discuss the why, how, and what of the collaboration
The Kartrider franchise is almost 20 years old, and what better way to celebrate than with the biggest collaboration the series has ever seen, with Blackpink entering the fray in KartRider: Drift?
That’s right, K-pop sensations Blackpink are joining KartRider: Drift for Season 5, hitting the tracks and burning rubber with a Blackpink collab exclusive supercar. From headlining Coachella music festival to hitting number 1 on the UK and US album charts, Jisoo, Jennie, Rose, and Lisa have done it all. And now, they’re donning racing gear in KartRider: Drift.
To mark the occasion, I spoke to the director of KartRider: Drift, Jaewoo Seo, to get a bit of insight into the thinking behind the collaboration.
Behind the Scenes
Getting one of the most popular K-pop groups in the world involved in your game is no easy task, so the success of the collaboration really shows just how far the franchise has come.
“As the original game was loved by players for a long time, we’re always thinking about what collaborations would provide users with new kinds of enjoyment,” Seo says. “The enormous popularity of the game in Korea, along with the global superstardom of Blackpink, offers the perfect opportunity to spread the KartRider: Drift word around the world. The global audience really resonates with the phenomena of Blackpink. The fact that the game IP is loved by so many people in Korea was the foundation to making this collaboration happen.”
The Design Process
From there, it’s all about the teamwork between the partner and the KartRider: Drift team. Seo says there’s a lot that both teams have to get right, from the deal being signed right up to seeing Blackpink in-game.
“Once a collaboration partner is selected, we create in-game assets such as characters and karts through a collaborative process involving planning, art, business decisions, and marketing material to ensure that the assets are created in a way that utilizes the partner brand’s image and strengths, and blends seamlessly with KartRider: Drift.”
It isn’t just about creating a couple of characters and karts, though. To bring Blackpink to life in KartRider: Drift, the team had to dig deeper into the individual personalities of the band members. That’s what drew fans to Blackpink, after all.
“We didn’t just create game characters similar to each Blackpink member,” Seo explains. We worked hard to analyze their characteristics, habits, mannerisms, and tastes so that we can incorporate them into the game characters.”
There also has to be constant contact with YG Entertainment, the IP holder, to ensure that KartRider: Drift is creating the characters, karts, decals, emotes and other assets according to the original Blackpink vision, too. It takes a lot to represent pop stars properly, so with this particular collaboration, communication is key.
Blackpink in-Game
So, how does the biggest girl group in the world actually look in KartRider: Drift? As mentioned, the team worked hard to get not only the style of Blackpink right, but the vibe, too.
With Blackpink coming to KartRider: Drift, the only other question is what could possibly be next for the franchise? Seo isn’t giving too much away, but we hope to be able to share more exciting partnerships going forward.
“For KartRider: Drift, the perfect collaboration is one that can be enjoyed by as many players as possible that love the game. Just as the original game often collaborated with well-known brands, KartRider: Drift, is always open to collaborating with brands that are recognized in the global market,” Seo adds.
“We’re always looking out for recognized global brands to work with, so stay tuned for what KartRider: Drift has in store going forward.”
KartRider: Drift is the only online free-to-play, cross-platform kart racer with deep kart and character customization in stunning high-definition and vibrant Dolby Atmos®. Eight players can race online in up to teams of four and face off in item or drift focused races with karts and characters you personalize.

Battles are largely tactical, though you’ll need precise timing to really get the most out of your attacks. For basic moves, like walloping a foe with a ladle or tail, you’ll need to hit a button the moment a needle crosses the green part of a meter to deal extra damage. More powerful blows, like using the dreaded Druidic Sickle, require you to rock the joystick as quickly as possible to fill up a meter for maximum damage. These cost Will Points, however, so use them wisely. For rare emergencies you can deploy Special Attacks using rare Resolve Points. For example, Loaf’s Roast special will prevent him from taking any damage at all. Simply hold A to heat up – but be careful not to overheat. Nobody likes burnt toast after all!
Just as important as a good offense is a strong defense, and you can mitigate damage by pressing A the moment an enemy makes contact with you. Quick reflexes are also crucial to kicking off combat encounters, as a good smack to an enemy during the game’s exploration phase will ensure that you get to take the first turn in battle.
As important as timing is, it will take wits as well as reflexes to come out victorious. Every enemy has its own strengths and weaknesses. In the early parts of a battle you’ll want to use your Type Sight boon to display enemy weaknesses and resistances. Husky Hornets are weak to normal attack types, like your ladle or a pickaxe, while Spidusts will be weak to leaf attack types, like Lint’s tail ability, but they resist slashing attacks like Loaf’s druidic sickle. You’ll have to manage your maneuvers carefully to efficiently obliterate your opponents before they crush you into crumbs!
Of course you’ll want to prepare for a rumble even during peaceful times, so make sure you’re managing your Hit Points, Will Points, and Resolve Points during your breaks between fisticuffs. Feed your party with apples, chocolate cakes or croissants (don’t think too hard about the fact that Loaf is eating baked pastries) to replenish your points, and defeat foes to level up for permanent upgrades.
That should be enough to get you started on your journey. You won’t have to wait long to see what further adventures Loaf and his buddies have in store, as Born of Bread emerges from the oven onto Xbox platforms on December 5. Bon appetit!
This is Simon Dasan, Creative Director on Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn, here to talk to you a bit more about our upcoming Action-RPG, now set for release in Summer 2024!
We’re excited to bring you the latest look at Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn, and we’ve been hard at work to bring you the best possible experience since you last saw it. We’re doubling down on amazing visual fidelity to bring the world of Flintlock to life, and ensuring a satisfying, visceral combat experience.
We’ve been hard at work doubling down on amazing visual fidelity of the world of Flintlock.
Take the role of Nor Vanek, alongside Enki, the mysterious Godlike creature as they venture on a quest for redemption in the world of Kian. Their journey will take them across treacherous mountainous terrain, through deadly deserts, and of course, to the front lines of the battle to reclaim the city of Dawn.
In the trenches of Dawn, Nor is ready for battle.
With combat being at the core of Flintlock, we have been hard at work refining the feel, skills, and various builds that will be at your disposal. Nor is a versatile and deadly Sapper, equally as adept with an axe as she is with flintlock weapons. Seamlessly weave axe and pistol shots as you go up against hordes of undead coming from the Great Below.
As a versatile Sapper, Nor is handy with an axe.
Tap into the magic of the Gods with Enki and become the ultimate God Killer. Utilise Enki Curses to amplify your damage and unleash satisfyingly brutal glory kills. You’ll also gain access to Witherings, powerful ultimate attacks that can change the tide of combat. Deal massive damage, heal yourself from the brink of death, and even gain access to other Gods attacks, Witherings can be found throughout the land and will allow you to customise your playstyle even further.
Emerging from magical triangle rifts, Enki can be used as a disruptor in battle to help with crowd control.
Speaking of playstyles, Flintlock has plenty to offer for all. Use the skill tree to master the way of Powder, Magic, or Steel. Powder increases proficiency in flintlock weapons, allowing you to become a ranged arsenal. Restrain enemies and gain access to new Enki abilities through the Magic tree. Become a master of close quarters combat through the Steel tree, where you can use momentum to attack faster and faster.
All of this comes together with Flintlock’s mobility. Powder Mobility gives an unparalleled level of freedom throughout the world, whether it be finding long lost secrets, or gaining the advantage against your foes. Open rifts throughout the world and combine with Enki to take flight, jump ever higher, or throw yourself forwards to reach previously unavailable ledges.
Nor’s powder jump grants her with unrivalled mobility.
We’re excited to show you more of Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn, coming in Summer of 2024. Keep an eye out, there’ll be a lot more to show in the coming months.
Ahh, the great outdoors! Take a deep breath of that fresh air, feel the sun’s warmth on your skin, and hear those ominous noises calling from the jungle…uh oh.
Better get that survival pack ready. Our team here at publisher Gameforge, alongside the phenomenally talented indie development studio Nordic Trolls, are preparing to take you on an expedition filled with action, adventure – and maybe an impossibly large crab or two – in Under a Rock, a brand new open world survival title.
Picture it: in the early 19th Century, you embark on a daring journey at the behest of the Society of Explorers to investigate the disappearance of a previous expedition when, suddenly, forces beyond your control send your hot air balloon careening on a crash course to disaster.
You survive, but find yourself stranded in a world lost to history, a hidden land that few can travel to… or from. Host to all manner of primitive, hostile flora and fauna, you’ll need to keep your wits about you as you set about getting your bearings, crafting your base, and doing whatever it takes to survive.
Your world won’t be the same as anyone else’s – every new game will procedurally generate a new land and, using the power of Unreal Engine 5, we’re building a vibrant, gorgeous game that gives you a sense of true exploration and discovery every time. You’ll want to build a character to match, and our diverse character creator will help you piece together the perfect adventurer.
You don’t have to go it alone, though! If multiplayer survival crafting is more your style, Under a Rock will support up to 10 players per server – meaning nine of your closest friends get to be stranded with you! As the saying goes: “the more the merrier”!
And, of course, what’s a mysterious land lost to time without a terrifying evil plaguing it? Part of your escape will hinge on uncovering the secrets behind the supernatural forces at play, piecing together the curse that hangs over the world, and researching how to break it. If you happen to discover treasure, artifacts, and native wildlife to bring back along the way, well…you’ve earned it.
Excited yet? This doesn’t even scratch the surface of what Under a Rock has in store! Along with gathering supplies and crafting a base, survivors will learn the joys of farming, fishing, and animal husbandry. Will you construct a serene fishing hut along the sandy shoreline? Or is harvesting crops from bountiful plants collected from the varied environment more your speed? Or maybe your passion lies in taming, breeding, and befriending a wide range of cute but (potentially) lethal critters? No matter what tickles your fancy, Under a Rock will spark your sense of adventure.
So, would-be intrepid explorers, be sure to keep an eye out for Under a Rock when it lands on Windows PC and Xbox consoles in future.
A few years ago, Naver Webtoon became quite active in wanting to gamify their webcomic IPs – we had previously maintained a good relationship with them developing other games for them — so they proposed to us three choices, and one of them was “All of Us Are Dead.”
For those unfamiliar, that particular webcomic was published online between 2009 to 2011. At the time, the Korean webcomic market was still exploding, and because zombie content was still somewhat unfamiliar in Korea, it gained a lot of enthusiastic fans. Fast-forward to 2021 and zombie-related content has poured out due to the spread of streaming and OTT. Against this backdrop is when we were able to make the bold decision to develop a non-mainstream genre game, a visual novel using the “All of Us Are Dead” IP.
When I was offered the IP, it was when the adventure team had just formed at IkinaGames. Thankfully, both the producer and director enjoyed reading the webcomic “All of Us Are Dead,” so that made the decision easier (to pitch). I just wanted to be careful because it was my first challenge in this genre, and I set the goal as small as possible without making any major changes to the original story and began development with a 10-month schedule.
Consulting with Joo Dong-geun, the author of “All of Us Are Dead,” the only request he had was he did not want the end-result to be somewhat subdued or too romantic. The webcomic itself utilized a mix of painting and realistic styles, and we agreed to put that atmosphere and the seriousness of the story into the game. That’s how the current graphics style was established after several iterations.
Later in development, Joo Dong-geun became much more open about our version of the scenarios in the game and the additional elements we added. He also played early builds and encouraged our team throughout development. As we neared the end of production, he said he wanted to be helpful, and helped promote our game through his social media network.
By early January 2022, we had gone through two prototypes, established the gameability with alpha builds, and by the time the scenario was written up to chapter 2. And then boom. The Netflix series “All of Us Are Dead” was released. We had no idea about the film until it was announced. However, after the release, the series became a global hit that far exceeded expectations — and I fell into a panic. We were suddenly under pressure to change the direction of the project, which was initially being developed as a small project, to now become a game that can withstand the weight of global IP.
The fundamentals of visual novel and story-oriented games could not be changed, so we focused on strengthening the backbone of the game by refreshing character profiles and reinforcing episodes more dramatically to organize the scenarios more closely. You may notice that when you start playing, if you look at the story until Chapter 2, it flows similarly to the original webtoon and then unfolds completely differently starting with Chapter 3.
I think, in some cases, this added pressure brought a positive effect to development. The number of scenarios increased and the graphics, number of characters, variations, effects, and even the illustrations started to exceeded our initial expectations. The art team became really motivated to create additional assets and they started to add new character expressions and variations. Thanks to this, there are now more than 10 differences for each character’s stance in the game. They even voluntarily went through the trouble of producing a scene like animation sprites in several frames, saying the scenes needed to be more dynamic.
Looking back, I’d say there were two main problems I encountered while creating a game from a webtoon. The first was changing the storytelling technique of a webcomic to game narrative techniques. The original comic, which was serialized weekly, composes a story with a very short breath but with impact, and does not put much weight on long-term narratives. Visual novels tend to take on a stronger sense of immersion, providing catharsis by gradually building narratives and then bursting through the clash of characters.
To change this type of scenario, the character’s past and profile were added with settings that were not in the original, and each story had to be produced with care to change the structure itself, such as meeting characters who were not in the original webcomic.
The second was to consider multiple scenarios by considering people who had already known the original webcomic and those who didn’t, who in our case, were people who watched only the Netflix series. That version only shared the names of the characters from the original comics and had completely different stories and characters. So, we aimed to create our own storyline while taking the basics of the original webtoon.
For example, while maintaining the original main event setting of the characters gathering on the rooftop of the school, the process of each character reaching the roof was a completely different. I wanted to make it possible for people who watched dramas to enjoy other points of view, and for people who don’t know IP to be immersed in the scene as well.
There is a lot of prejudice about the visual novel form, especially in Korea. It’s a market where the likes and dislikes of the genre are very clear. Creating a visual novel outside of what was expected (e.g. romance) was a challenge I set for myself. Besides, there’s a horde of zombies and yet it’s not an action game, but a visual novel. Now come to think of it… perhaps yes. Maybe the project itself was a challenge from the very beginning.
Many players who have experienced the game said that the story and graphics were of high quality. We hope that “All of Us Are Dead” will be open to the possibility of other visual novels. I want to show the global market that this game, this story, is possible with an IP like “All of Us Are Dead.”

Chessarama is a collection of original puzzle and strategy games inspired by Chess. It reimagines chess rules and tactics using many different themes. Each game has its own set of rules, visual theme and original handcrafted challenges for you to play! Here are all the original games you will find in Chessarama: (1) Farm Life; (2) Dragon Slayers; (3) Street Soccer; (4) Lady Ronin; (5) Last Stand; (6) Knight Supreme; (7) Pawn Mania; (8) Soccer Chess. Take a look at some of the Chessarama games: In Dragon Slayer, you need to push your pawn to the end of a path in order to kill the mighty dragon. But it will not be that easy! The dragon attacks the board every time the pawn moves and every undefended piece will die. In Lady Ronin, Chess meets Sokoban. You play with a Ronin (a chess queen) and you need to eliminate the other pieces in order to get close to the Shogun and kill it. Pieces move like in chess, but push each other like in sokoban. In Soccer Chess you will play a soccer match using chess pieces. You will need to think a few moves ahead if you want to break through the adversary’s defenses to score a goal. This is just some examples about how Chess can be reinvented. Welcome to Chessarama!

World of Tanks Modern Armor‘s Holiday tradition returns.
Vinnie Jones is coming to town.
New Commanders and an exclusive tank are waiting under the tree!
‘Tis the season to be tankful as Vinnie Jones teams up with World of Tanks Modern Armor to bring you Holiday Ops 2024!
This community-driven event starts on December 1. Get ready to hop into your favorite tanks and score themed rewards together with World of Tanks Modern Armor players across the globe or, for the first time ever, on your own. Yes, this year’s Holiday Ops event brings you double the fun and the rewards with two paths to follow. You can take on both your personal op with the Santa’s Helper Earn Challenge, as well as the community-based Holiday Op event. Each path will have its own rewards ranging from themed Cosmetics, boosters, and Consumables to the powerful Charlemagne Premium tank.
And the latest addition to Santa’s team will also be joining the celebrations to make sure that all Commanders stay on the nice list this year.
Introducing Our Holiday Ambassador!
Former soccer player and professional tough guy Vinnie Jones joins you in the game as Holiday Ops 2024’s special guest. Known for his no-nonsense roles in film classics like Snatch (2000) and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998), Jones is essentially a human tank, a professional strongman who was practically built for the humor that we had planned for this year’s Holiday Ops experience.
“He has tough-guy charisma, and it fit great with our new concept for the Holiday Ops 2024 event,” said Alena Terekhova, Publishing Director for World of Tanks Modern Armor. “It was a blast to work with him, and he was open to sharing his thoughts and ideas.”
In the Holiday Ops 2024 trailer, Jones plays the role of the top enforcer for none other than jolly ol’ Saint Nick. For years, while Santa Claus has tended to the Nice List, Jones has paid visits to the people on the Naughty List, reminding them exactly why you better watch out.
This year, however, things are different for Vinnie. He’s found a holiday role that he thinks might suit him better, one that includes a sweet new company ride: a tank commander in World of Tanks!
Jones indeed had a blast with the concept, too (and not just because he and Santa got to take his tank out for some practice shots, as seen in the trailer). “I am a World of Tanks commander now, and it is going to be ‘Jingle-Bells’ all the way!” he said.
Terekhova echoed Jones’ enthusiasm, saying, “I think we all managed and reached our intention – the promotional video that Vinnie Jones took part in is indeed different from our previous Holiday Ops trailers.”
That much holiday cheer couldn’t be confined to the trailer, even a trailer as large as this. We had to bring Vinnie Jones into the game itself. That means that during Holiday Ops, you’ll be able to recruit Vinnie Jones as your very own tank commander!
Holiday Ops Commanders and Tank
World of Tanks Modern Armor will have both a 2D and a 3D version of the Vinnie Jones Commander, with the 2D version available as a reward in the Santa’s Helper Earn Challenge. Both will feature 250 lines of custom voiceover that Jones himself recorded for this event earlier in 2023. Ever the consummate professional, Jones applied his natural focus on production day and recorded his lines in about a half-hour.
“We worked with different development and publishing teams across Wargaming [World of Tanks PC and World of Tanks Blitz],” said Terekhova. “We had to balance between priorities and product focuses, but we all agreed that we want to have something new and outstanding this year, so we remained focused, but creative at the same time.
“I remember one of our first steps was to choose how we wanted to present Vinnie Jones: as a Santa-type character, or the kind of tough hero he plays in his movies, or even a football player, but Santa’s enforcer sounded like a perfect fit for our concept, so we proceeded with this direction.”
So while you’ll be able to hear Jones’ signature toughness in every line of dialogue, several lines in particular are spiked with holiday cheer … and those aren’t the only special details.
For the 3D Commander in particular, Terekhova says, “Vinnie’s look features a stylish suit and red coat. The suit is tailored to reflect Vinnie’s sophisticated personality while also being versatile enough to accommodate his active lifestyle. The red coat adds a touch of festivity to his overall appearance, making him stand out during the holiday event.”
And of course, every commander needs a vehicle. The tank we designed for Vinnie Jones had to have his personality, too, because if you’re going to go out tanking, you might as well go in style, you know?
This year’s Holiday Ops tank, available for purchase, is the British Tier IX Old Reliable Medium Tank, a versatile vehicle that’s as dependable as its name suggests, no matter how rough the situation gets. Old Reliable is cast in an exterior that calls to mind the timeless elegance of blackened iron and burnished wood, and also features slogans and mottos that pay tribute to Jones’ entire career and were approved by the man himself.
Vinnie Jones has his list, he’s checked it twice, and he’s ready to get to work. Join him from December 1 through January 8 and have a blast this holiday in World of Tanks Modern Armor!

“I think that the more classical tone is the more dominant one in our [score]. However, if you listen to the whole score, there are many areas where electronic and sound design elements are 50, sometimes 60, or even 70% of the score. The score is vast and there are many cues that are actually not what we call classical at all. I think the interesting thing is the combination that we created.
“At many points, you cannot really put your finger on what is sound design, what is electronic, and what is orchestral, because everything really is intertwined. Sometimes there is a more traditional accompaniment, or orchestral background, but then the instrument that carries the melodies is actually synth. And sometimes it’s the other way around; there’s more ‘sound design-ish’ elements, but the [main] instrument is classical.”
The result is a score that can slide from mood to mood, style to style, seamlessly – helped by the fact that it’s enormous, surpassing the five-hour mark. Of course, five hours of music is still a fair bit less than the hundreds of hours some players will put into a game like Starfield, meaning Zur’s other challenge was in crafting a score that can keep hitting its key themes without feeling overly repetitive.
“It’s about finding this balance between, ‘How can I create something new, but make it feel like part of the same family?’ There are many ways to go about it: you could change the timbre, you could change the tempo, you could create variations that are different enough, but still remind the player, ‘Oh, yeah, this reminds me of the theme’, but it’s not the theme, it’s something different.
“It’s like painting. If you add a little bit more grey or black, automatically, the painting feels more gloomy. And there’s a way to do it in music. It’s almost like drawing the picture and fine-tuning the colours and themes. In this way, you create environments that are different enough, on one hand, but then still part of the same DNA.”
Ten years ago, on November 22, 2013, the team at Xbox Game Studios Publishing released an all-new Killer Instinct for Xbox One and Windows PC. Since then, Killer Instinct has boasted a passionate, global community that has regularly featured at tournaments.
Earlier this year, at Evo 2023, we announced a special update to mark Killer Instinct’s 10th anniversary. Well, with the hard work of our partners at Iron Galaxy Studios, that update is finally here – and we’re officially calling it Killer Instinct Anniversary Edition. The Anniversary Edition includes some changes that we’re hoping will welcome players old and new!
Firstly, a new color scheme for our logo, theme, and remastered in-game user interface. (It’s a nod to Killer Instinct Gold, which released on the Nintendo 64 in 1996!)
Secondly, as we announced on Iron Galaxy’s developer stream last week, we’ve made significant balance updates to 19 of the 29 fighters. These updates, which range from minor bug fixes to major tuning adjustments, all came from extensive feedback from our community and pro tournament players. This rebalancing will create an entirely new meta for fighting gamers to explore – and we couldn’t be more excited to see what the players will do with it!
Another important update is to matchmaking, which has now been fully updated to PlayFab services after initial migrations this past May.
We’ve also made some changes to game rendering, including updating from Dx11 to Dx12 on Xbox consoles to help optimize graphics for Series X|S consoles. Xbox Series X consoles now display Killer Instinct in resolutions up to 4K at 60FPS, while Series S consoles reach up to 1440p at 60FPS. The combined updated theme and optimized graphics elevate the Killer Instinct experience players know and love for modern consoles and PCs.
This update also streamlines the many previous editions into two versions of Killer Instinct:
Thefree to play version of Killer Instinct – now available on Steam for the first time! – includes all the previously mentioned updates. This version features one free weekly rotating Fighter and Single-Player, Local, and Ranked Modes, to ensure new players can experience all that Killer Instinct has to offer.
TheKiller Instinct Anniversary Edition will replace all paid versions of Killer Instinct, such as the Definitive Edition… and the good news is that anyone who has bought Premium content for the previous versions of Killer Instinct (Editions, Fighters, etc.) will get upgraded to the Anniversary Edition for free! Steam users will also receive, for the first time ever, the Permanent VIP Double XP Booster, and specialty colors for Gargos, Killer Instinct’s main boss.
For more information on what to expect from Killer Instinct Anniversary Edition, you can visit our News section on the Killer Instinct website.
We’re looking forward to hearing feedback from the Killer Instinct community! We would love it if you tag your social media posts with #PlayKI, so we can track all your feedback. On behalf of everyone who’s ever worked on Killer Instinct, thank you for ten amazing years!
