  • Have a Nice Death Brings Roguelike Fun and Challenge to Xbox

Have a Nice Death Brings Roguelike Fun and Challenge to Xbox

    Reading Time: 5 minutes

Sharpen your scythe, Xbox fans, and show the underworld who’s boss.

We are so excited to see our game, Have A Nice Death, release on Xbox. For the anecdote, everything originated from a little sketch of Death scribbled by the Creative Director, Nicolas Leger, in the corner of a page during an Unruly Heroes meeting (our first game). This sparked a conversation about what it would be like if Death were in charge of the underworld and worked in a traditional office setting. With everything that’s been going on in the world, Death would probably be pretty busy processing paperwork for incoming souls and in desperate need of a vacation.

“I thought it had great visual potential: simple proportions, clean silhouette, an obvious and iconic weapon, and this concept of a shapeshifting cloak immediately gave me ideas for movement and combat,” Leger says. “It was just one or two months later that I made the next step with a staged gameplay video during my free time.”

And this is how it all started. Now, let’s dive deep into what might interest you: The gameplay of Have a Nice Death!

Have a Nice Death is a fast, action-packed hack and slash roguelike in procedural environments where you play as Death, and must go across unique departments (levels) to defeat the Sorrows (the bosses) until you reach your goal: The final elevator that lets you have a much-needed vacation. Acquiring and choosing the tools in your arsenal for this adventure is of the utmost importance! First, choose the kind of scythe you want at the beginning of each run as they all provide a different move set and gameplay. During your adventure, you will also find other weapons including fireballs, maces, and bows. We have short range, long range, easy-to-use, and hard-to-master weapons, totaling over 70 weapons for you to play and mix to fit your playstyle.

Have a Nice Death has many unique twists compared to some other roguelikes. The progression system in our game l gives you the opportunity to gain new abilities and upgrades, however, there’s a chance they might also give a boost to your enemies! We call these upgrades “curses” and to gain them, you will have to fight our menagerie of Sorrows & Thanagers (mini bosses)!

Try to think about the combination of these upgrades together as they are the key to completing the game and you will need to pick them according to the weapons in your arsenal. If you use a multi-hit weapon, we would suggest a green curse that spawns a deadly butterfly per hit you do. Did I say green one? That’s because Have a Nice Death’s curses are split into 3 branches (blue, red, green) on a random skill tree. They are ranked in accordance with the main pillars of Death, Inc.’s business philosophy: Red for Daring, Green for Excellence, and Blue for Innovation. Red curses focus on damage-based buffs, green curses focus on enhancing your ability to use spells, and blue curses focus on utility or defense-based buffs. Curses play an important role on how you want your character build to be like (e.g., have a more weapon-focused or a spell- focused build), so make sure to take curses that fit the build you’d like to have!

Another twist is the Anima system, the healing system in the game. As you explore Death, Inc., you’ll come across Blue Anima, which does heal you but it only heals your injuries!  So you’ll need to be on the lookout for ways to completely heal Death, such as finding and using Koffee or the very rare Golden Anima. Dodging every attack or killing stuff quickly works, too!

One of the goals for Have a Nice Death was to have a good mix of improvisation and foresight. We wanted the player to both be surprised by each run in order to give the feeling of what we call the “golden run,” but still be able to have agency and try to influence the run to feel the satisfaction of being overpowered. This occurs by offering the player many choices while switching up gameplay as to not encourage “save-scumming,” for example.

While Have a Nice Death is roguelike and we know you will die (I mean, “burn out”), you don’t have to be afraid of the difficulty. We have thought about everything. You will always find some gold to spend in your very own lobby with Joe to unlock new weapons or food to consume. He’s even nice enough to offer you a ridiculous discount if you have completed some objectives for him. For those who want an easier or a more challenging playthrough across Death, Inc., there are 15 difficulty levels to choose from, as we know roguelike players enjoy a nice challenge as they hack’n’slash away!

Have a Nice Death is available on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One now.

    Welcome to Death, Inc.
Discover and explore the darkly-charming, procedurally-generated departments of Death Inc., where you’ll meet a diverse cast of memorable characters—like your affable pumpkin-headed assistant, Pump Quinn—who are always willing to share the latest office gossip Reap What You Sow
Sharpen your skills (and scythe) through fast-paced hack n’ slash combat, utilizing over 70 unique weapons and spells you can find and upgrade to create devastating combinations Death Never Sleeps
Since Death can’t die, use what you’ve learned and earned to overcome the numerous minions and bosses in each department of Death Incorporated… over and over. A performance review after every run guarantees that you’ll unlock interesting items and upgrades that will help you progress on your journey When Death Gives You Curses
Taking more power for yourself is a controversial move in Death Incorporated’s company culture. For instance, adopting a Curse upgrade for yourself might result in the Labor Inspector granting your subordinates enhanced powers, or worse, raising the cost of koffee and other items that are vital to your work output

  • How Raven Software Created Urzikstan, the Definitive Call of Duty: Warzone Map

How Raven Software Created Urzikstan, the Definitive Call of Duty: Warzone Map

    Reading Time: < 1 minute

Contracts have also been an important part of Warzone, bringing that back as well into Urzikstan was a no brainer, including the fan-favorite contract, Big Game Bounty, where the challenge is to eliminate the player with the highest kill count to earn the Advanced UAV. Season 1 Reloaded will also introduce a new Champions Quest – but we’ll have to wait for more details on that later in 2024.

“Vondel and Ashika Island will be present during Season 1. And with the new movement mechanics, weapons, and Operators, it makes them feel refreshed,” explains Timmins. “Where we are most excited is looking to the year ahead, when we will see the return of Fortunes Keep and Rebirth Island! We have a great year ahead of us in terms of maps, and it all starts with Urzikstan!”

Urzikstan is shaping up to be the Call of Duty: Warzone map for everyone. And with returning modes like Battle Royale, Resurgence, and Plunder, and other new modes arriving in Season 1 Reloaded like Covert Exfil and Weapon Case, now’s possibly the best time ever to experience this epic, free-to-play battle royale experience.

  • What’s that Pop Up? Your Activision Games Are On the Cloud

What’s that Pop Up? Your Activision Games Are On the Cloud

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

When we welcomed Activision Blizzard to Team Xbox a few weeks ago, we reaffirmed our goal of bringing more Xbox games to more players on more devices. To that end, we made a commitment to the European Commission to enable European Economic Area (EEA) gamers to play current and future Activision Blizzard PC and console games that they hold a license for on cloud game streaming services beyond Xbox Cloud Gaming.

We met this commitment in October, and are now reflecting these changes in four live service games that have an in-game software licensing agreement. While many of you may have already been streaming Activision Blizzard titles, beginning today, the next time you boot up Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare® II, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III, Call of Duty: Warzone™, and Crash Team Rumble ™ you will be asked to accept an updated Software License and Service Agreement.

The full terms of this agreement can be found here, but as we know you’ll be eager to jump into your game, we’re sharing that the change is a small one, reflecting the grant of a free license to EEA consumers that allows them to stream that title, via any cloud game streaming service of their choice that supports streaming the game, on any device they may own.

When you see this pop up, know that what you might see as a minor inconvenience is indeed a sign of us honoring commitments, and indicating that you, the players of these games, have permission to enjoy these titles in a way you previously could not.

This is the only time you will see a pop up of this nature. Going forward, these licenses will be incorporated into the terms of use when games are released.

Thank you for your continued support, and we hope you enjoy playing your favorite games, wherever you may be.

For additional information on Microsoft’s commitments to the European Commission, please see here and here

  • Community Update December 2023 – Virtually Optimized Month

Community Update December 2023 – Virtually Optimized Month

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

    Winter Is Coming Soon

The chill of winter’s grasp is fast approaching those of us north of Earth’s hula hoop, and it’s times like these I look back fondly on my sojourn at our Fargo Campus. The days are short, the snow is freshly powdered, and it hasn’t yet gotten so cold that your eyelashes freeze over walking to your car. (A completely foreign phenomenon having grown up in a climate where all four seasons can happen in a single day.)

Much like Fargo itself, things are slowing down around the office as everyone prepares for the upcoming holiday season. This means December’s update is a little on the light side, but we did want to keep everyone informed on a few things as we close out 2023.

    All Things Set Aside

The big news this month is that, as with previous years, all new game and update flighting across Xbox Insider platforms will be temporarily paused sometime during the week of December 15th. This will continue through the end of year and into January to ensure that everyone is able to have reliable and enjoyable gaming experiences throughout the holidays. (Plus, it eases the load on a smaller contingent of engineers.) But worry not dear reader! Our teams will still be working on next year’s improvements, features, and content throughout this period, as well as having resources available to make sure any issues that may arise don’t impact this heavy season of gaming.

The other main topic this month is a small revision to our planned decommissioning of Feature Fridays on the subreddit. The plan is still moving forward; however, the timeline might go beyond my initial projection for end of year. I want to ensure this change is something that will be a net positive for the community and not simply changing for change’s sake. As such, my research / proposals have gone a tad longer than anticipated for finding the next platform. Included in this was some great feedback from the subreddit, so please keep sharing your thoughts, opinions, and critiques!

    [re]connect

Speaking of sharing your thoughts, since things will be a little quieter than normal this month, I wanted to do something fun with Xbox Insiders. So next week, on Tuesday, December 12th, we’ll be hosting an AMA* on the subreddit. It’ll mostly be me answering questions, but other members of the team might stop by and pop their heads in as well. *Disclaimer: “Anything” in this context doesn’t include items we aren’t able to discuss publicly. (inb4whenTESVI)

    All Eyes Look Ahead

As I said at the top, this is a shorter update as we’re still working fastidiously toward the big 10-year anniversary celebration in February of next year. There’s still a ton of work to be done, and I’ll actually be spending the next few weeks building my presentation for the team to start the new year. What does everyone think of my title slide? 😎

I hope everyone enjoys this issue of XIP Community Update, and has a wonderful month ahead. If you haven’t already, drop us a follow @xboxinsider or head over to our official subreddit r/XboxInsiders.

Phil Spencer Celebrates Xbox’s Place in the World of Entertainment at CCXP23 Brazil

    Reading Time: 5 minutes

It was incredible to join our fans in the celebrations at Comic Con Experience (CCXP23) in Brazil last week. Xbox became part of the largest pop culture event in Latin America for the first time ever, alongside big brands from movies, television series and animations, and helping to show fans how gaming is becoming a part of the entertainment industry as a whole.

We sit in the middle of a show that is about TV and movies, and yet we see Halo (TV Show), we see Fallout (TV Show), we see things that come from video games now going into movies.

Phil Spencer, CEO of Microsoft Gaming

CEO of Microsoft Gaming, Phil Spencer, welcomed the fans at FanFest – in a booth spanning over 1,000 square meters – helping to reveal games news and updates, offering a first glimpse at the Fallout TV show, and much more.

“One of the things that is really special to me about CCXP this year is that this was the first time, anywhere, where our booth has our Xbox Games Studios games, our Bethesda games and our Activision Blizzard King games—all in one booth”, said Spencer on the main stage of CCXP.

Missed some of these moments? Stick around as we recap everything about Xbox’s presence at CCXP23.

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l6gxeoqMARI?feature=oembed&w=500&h=281]

We welcomed 300 of our passionate fans to CCXP, who were greeted by Phil Spencer, Melina Juergens, our Senua actress from the Hellblade series, and Pablo Schreiber, who gave life to the iconic Master Chief in the Halo TV show – and is coming back for season 2.

    Fallout

During his panel at CCXP23, Phil Spencer brought up the fact that Fallout 76 is about to receive its next major expansion – Atlantic City – with the first content, Boardwalk Paradise arriving on December 5. He provided players with a sneak peek of what to expect in this new explorable area with new expeditions and enemy groups, casinos and fresh dangers to overcome.

I was blown away (by the Fallout TV Show trailer). I think they have done an awesome job capturing both the brutality of the Fallout universe as well as the humor and kind of melancholy in a special way.

  • Halo Infinite – Firefight: King of the Hill Preview

Halo Infinite – Firefight: King of the Hill Preview

    Reading Time: 14 minutes

Bip. Bap. Bam. Welcome to Firefight in Halo Infinite!

With the December Update dropping on December 5, the latest incarnation of Firefight will arrive in Halo Infinite—Firefight: King of the Hill.

Before we dive into the details, let’s take a quick look back at the long history of Firefight, all the way back to its origins…

    FIREFIGHT: A BRIEF HISTORY

Halo: Combat Evolved screenshot of a Forerunner beam tower near the start of the second mission, Halo

„It’s a mess, sir,” Staff Sergeant Avery Johnson said. “We’re scattered all over this valley. We called for evac, but until you showed up, I thought we were cooked.“

„Don’t worry, Sergeant,” Cortana replied. “We’ll stay here until evac arrives.“

The Master Chief looked up at the strange alien tower that was currently serving as a rally point for this group of Marine survivors who had made it off the UNSC Pillar of Autumn. There were only a handful of them, ammunition was low, and—as Private Mendoza’s voice came over the comm—it was clear that they were out of time.

„Heads up! I got a Covenant dropship headin‘ in, over here!“

The conceptual origins of Firefight in Halo can perhaps be traced back to this very moment, near the start of the second mission in Halo: Combat Evolved. After coming across a group of Marine survivors, you must protect them from waves of Covenant reinforcements before they can be picked up by Foehammer.

Firefight itself would debut in 2009’s Halo 3: ODST as a cooperative mode where you and up to three of your friends could put your skills to the ultimate test, experiencing Halo sandbox encounters in the form of a survival-based “horde mode” that was becoming increasingly popular in games around this time. No doubt, many of you reading this today will recall the late nights spent on the Alpha Site map attempting to get the Vidmaster: Endure achievement as you sought to complete your Road to Recon…

From there, Firefight would go on to take several different forms in subsequent Halo games. In Halo: Reach, players were given extensive customization options to edit many aspects of the experience, which was also available in matchmaking.

In Halo 5, Warzone Firefight was introduced as a pure PvE version of the new PvPvE Warzone mode. Eight players could come together on large-scale maps to unleash their most powerful weapons and vehicles against Covenant and Promethean enemies.

And then, Halo Wars 2 introduced Blitz Firefight and Terminus Firefight. In the former, players had to defend and control three zones from waves of UNSC and Banished forces; the latter, meanwhile, was more of a “tower defense”-type experience where up to three players could work together to defend their bases and a Forerunner tower, with Flood enemies added into the mix.

And so, the time has come for a new Firefight experience in Halo Infinite

    FIREFIGHT: KING OF THE HILL

Halo Infinite playlist image for Firefight: King of the Hill on Normal difficulty depicting Spartans fighting Banished on the House of Reckoning map

To delve deeper into this new incarnation of Firefight, we’re joined by Connor Kennelly, Technical Designer, for a Q&A breakdown.

What is Firefight: King of the Hill and how does it work?

Our take on Firefight is in many ways close to the previous iterations of Firefight you remember. You and three other Spartans will face waves of Banished foes until you prevail… or die trying. The experience is entirely PvE, so there are no other human players to sweat against—just you, your fireteam, and Halo Infinite’s awesome cast of campaign enemies.

When the game starts, a hill will spawn, and waves of progressively harder Banished enemies will try to capture that hill. Your job is to take the hill from them and hold it until you capture it. A Boss Wave, filled with tougher than usual enemies (and spearheaded by a named High Value Target or Boss), spawns once you’ve reached a certain amount of hill progress.

You score a point when you both finish capturing the hill AND defeat the Boss Wave. Then, just like in other Firefight iterations, you’ll get a brief respite to resupply your weapons and equipment, which only respawn in between hills. After that downtime, the hill will begin spawning in a new location, and the cycle repeats.

The Matchmaking modes will have exactly five hills for each match, and you’ll get a win if you capture at least three of them throughout the round.

The timer in the mode is technically unlimited, but games tend to run between fifteen-to-twenty minutes depending on how well your team is playing. We totally expect the speedrun-oriented folks to be competing for lowest time for each map, though.

Halo Infinite screenshot of the Unggoy High Value Target known as Bipbap running in a hill on the House of Reckoning map

So you get points by capturing each hill and defeating its Boss Wave. And it takes 5 points to win. How do you lose?

Well, the enemy team can capture the hill just like you can, so if you can’t hold the waves off, you can lose the point to the other team. And since there’s a fixed number of hills to play, you don’t want to lose that bonus XP, so don’t let them capture those hills!

Also, just like in previous Firefight iterations, death can wipe out your squad. More on that in a minute, but keeping everyone alive is very much a focus of this mode.

In past Firefight modes, players have limited respawns. How do respawns work in Firefight KOTH?

The matchmade version of Firefight: King of the Hill will NOT be using a pool of lives. When designing this mode, we read a lot of community posts on old Firefight iterations, and we saw a common frustration with matchmade experiences where players felt that matchmade teammates often “wasted” the team lives. To address this, we brought in an elimination mechanic instead. When a teammate is killed, they go down where they fell and are given a lengthy respawn timer—the duration depends on the difficulty you are playing. And if ALL the Spartans go down simultaneously, you’ll instantly lose the game.

Your teammates can bring you back to the battlefield immediately by reviving you, just like in Attrition, but as mentioned above, the Banished will be making hill progress the whole time… so you’re going to need to balance revives against the enemy capture progress.

The tension between going for a revive or contesting the hill has made for some of the most delicious moments in our internal playtests, especially on the Heroic difficulty where the respawn time is longer. Do you play it safe and give up some enemy hill progress to bring your teammates back, or does your Last Spartan Standing try to contest a Banished-owned hill alone and risk the entire game? I guess it depends on how greedy heroic you feel…

We hope utilizing revives will reduce frustration for the players that want to solo-queue but will keep the co-op sense of shared fate we loved in both survival Firefight and Warzone Firefight.

Halo Infinite screenshot of a downed Spartan in Firefight: KOTH

One last thing on the death mechanics here: since this pain point was mostly a matchmaking concern, we added Custom Game options that will let you use the traditional lifepool. We also have a separate option to turn off revives, so if your lobby wants classic mechanics or you just love roasting your buddies for wasting lives, we’ve got you covered! Because we do not have lives in the matchmade version, we do not have the old Bonus Rounds to earn extra lives. However, we think replenishing the lifepool is a vital mechanic for those endless runs like in ODST and Reach, so we have another Custom Game option that will let you replenish the shared lifepool if the Spartans win the point.

Season 5 is all about letting people play Halo the way they want to play, and we’ve tried to support that as best we can.

Why Firefight: King of the Hill instead of a new iteration of specifically survival-based Firefight?

“Firefight” encompasses a lot. Firefight is about surviving waves of enemies with your friends. It’s about tracking who’s alive and who’s dead. It’s about managing limited resources. It’s about Skulls ratcheting up the difficulty as rounds progress.

And, at the core of it, Firefight is about having your back up against the wall and coming out on top through teamwork.

So, when we wanted to bring that back-against-the-wall feeling to Infinite, we landed on the King of the Hill mechanic. The hill started out as a way to organize combat on big maps. It provided that “wall” your team put their back up against when the maps were particularly large. Plus, it brought the added bonus of letting us move that spot around the map so the experience was more varied within each game.

That was just our starting point. As with everything in game development, you learn a lot as you playtest. And sure enough, as we spent more time with the hill mechanic, we realized it was adding an unexpected dynamic to the experience. Players who ran and hid when a tough wave of enemies appeared couldn’t stay hidden and pick shots at enemies until they had thinned their ranks—since they couldn’t progress the mode without having at least one player occupy the hill, the Spartans had to band together to retake the point and begin scoring again.

Halo Infinite screenshot of Spartans being healed by a Repair Field while taking a hill in Firefight: KOTH

We really enjoyed “the flip” between attacking and defending that emerged from this dynamic, and we also enjoyed the additional cooperative moments this created. Some of the most fun we’ve had in past Firefight modes are when you’re completely overrun by the AI and have to scramble, and concentrating the AI squads in a way that demanded extra fireteam cooperation really seemed to enhance those moments.

Where it really started getting good was when we extended the hill code to let AI units capture them. Suddenly, there was tension when the enemy pushed your fireteam off the hill. The bar started ticking up. That drum sound played with each tick, letting you know the Banished were inching closer to victory. Your decisions were now constrained by time. Is pathing back to that rocket launcher you saw across the map worth the tradeoff on the enemy hill progress? Can you afford to let your shields come back up before contesting, or do you need to get in there now and buy time for your other teammates to arrive?

Even in the course of regular combat, when the Spartans have control over the field, the hill shapes how you play. Because a single enemy AI can contest the hill and halt your progress, the fireteam needs to work together to keep the zone clear to draw the Boss Wave out. We indexed into larger hill volumes on each map so that there are multiple fronts to defend. Coordinating with your team to sweep the firing lanes, rotating from one sight line to another as you cover a friendly revive, choosing when to send players out of the hill to return with a power weapon or snipe from a vantage point—these are some examples of the core decisions you’ll be making when you match into a game Firefight: KOTH.

To make a long story short: we love the extra decision-making, the additional cooperative elements, and the tension that the hill brings to the classic Firefight formula. We can’t wait to hear what you think when you jump into the mode tomorrow!

Halo Infinite screenshot of a Hunter in Firefight: KOTH

Are there other differences (besides the hill) from survival Firefight or Warzone Firefight?

Yes. The other major departure we made is how Skull difficulty modifiers are earned and enabled throughout the match. In past Firefight, Skulls got enabled in a fixed order. We wanted to make the Skulls a bit more dynamic to adapt to how well a squad is doing in the round.

The rules for Skulls in Firefight: King of the Hill work like this:

    • If a team wins a point and nobody dies, one semi-random Skull gets enabled for the next hill.
    • Skulls stack over the course of a game. You can have multiple Skulls active if you keep winning points without any fireteam deaths. In matchmaking, the maximum is four active Skulls on the fifth hill.
    • Streaks can be dropped. Losing a hill to the Banished will disable your most recently enabled Skull.

We say a “semi-random” Skull gets enabled, because just like the classic modes, you earn easier Skulls before the harder Skulls. For example, the first Skull you earn will always be either Fog or Catch. But if you earn a second Skull, the pool expands to include Famine and Thunderstorm. The result is that fireteams who are able to earn Skulls will get a different experience from match to match, but the difficulty curve will still gradually increase in the same way as the match goes on.

We made this change because when we looked at how people talked about enjoying past Firefight offerings, we noticed two very different types of motivations, and the fixed-order Skull mechanics only catered to one crowd.

One type of player we saw was the challenge hound. They want to be pushed. They want to feel overwhelmed. They want their squad to really go through fire and flame because earned victory is all the sweeter. The fixed-order Skulls gave these players a foe worthy of their blade, since they were guaranteed to run into some satisfyingly brutal Skulls by the end of each round.

We landed on the “streak” nature of the mechanic as something to enhance the experience for these types of players. It feels great to have your Skull streak on the line when the Boss Wave shows up in the fourth hill and you really need to grit your teeth and keep your teammates alive without losing the point.

Halo Infinite screenshot of a Brute Chieftain and Brute Warrior in a hill on the House of Reckoning

The other type of player we saw plays Firefight for a very different reason. These folks look to Firefight as an escape from the sweat of multiplayer. And while they do not want it to be so easy that it’s boring, they really just want to kick back with their friends and shoot the breeze while they shoot some aliens.

Unavoidable Skulls, especially the tough ones like Black Eye and Blind, cut against this player type. They make you focus 110% on the game by raising the stakes, but that can actually take the focus away from what motivates these players—having a relaxing time with their friends. We landed on the no-death mechanic as a means of keeping Skulls out of the way for these types of players, since players who are just around to goof off will naturally accumulate some deaths in regular gameplay (and therefore won’t encounter Skulls). In this way, the game tries to match whatever energy your lobby is bringing.

Since we saw PvE as a way to build on that “party shooter” vibe that brings people together and makes Halo feel so unique, we wanted to make a change to support this group without sacrificing challenge for the players who wanted it. The goal here is to give players that care about challenge something to strive for as a team, and at the same time to be mostly invisible to players who are just looking for a good time with their friends.

And finally, in the spirit of letting you play Halo the way you want to play—we have Custom Game options that will let you enable those legacy behaviors. You can use the Fixed setting to make the Skulls come on one at a time after each hill regardless of who got the point, and we also have a None setting that will stop the mode from enabling Skulls at all. That last option will let minigame scripters turn on Skulls with whatever logic they want using Node Graph. More on that in the Forge section below.

Halo Infinite screenshot of a node graph for bosses and Skulls

What Skulls are in Firefight: King of the Hill?

The Skulls available in this mode are as follows:

    • Fog – disables motion tracker.
    • Catch – AI enemies throw and drop more grenades.
    • Famine – weapons dropped by AI enemies have half the ammo they normally would.
    • Thunderstorm – upgrades the rank of most AI enemies.
    • Mythic – AI enemies have significantly increased health.
    • Black Eye – your shields only recharge when you melee enemies.

Additionally, there is a (very) small chance you’ll get one of the following Skulls enabled at the start of a round. These Skulls don’t increase the difficulty, but they do make for some fun moments!

    • Boom – doubles explosion radius.
    • Cowbell – acceleration from explosions is increased.
    • Grunt Birthday Party – Grunt headshots lead to glorious celebrations.
    • Bandana – grants unlimited ammo and grenades, and removes equipment cooldown.
    • IWHBYD – rare combat dialogue becomes more common, and vice versa.

Note: the Blind Skull, which hides first-person HUD elements and view-models, is not in the pool for the mode, but it is available to Custom Games via Node Graph scripting.

TL;DR on the Firefight: KOTH differences from survival Firefight:

    • Players get points by capturing a hill and killing the Boss Wave for that hill, not just surviving.
    • If the Spartans fail to hold the hill, the Banished will capture it instead.
    • No more shared lifepool; You have only one life, but your teammates can revive you like in Attrition. All Spartans downed at the same time will end the round instantly.
    • You can use Custom Game options to get classic Lifepool settings.
    • Players earn Skulls by winning hills without dying, and Skulls stack.
Halo Infinite screenshot of an Elite Warlord, Jackal, and Brute Chosen Warrior in Firefight: KOTH

How will Firefight: King of the Hill help me progress my Operation or Battle Pass?

In Matchmaking, you’ll get a small amount of Match XP just for playing. Additionally, you’ll get bonus XP for a win, which is capturing 3 of the 5 hills. Successfully capturing the fourth and fifth hill will each give an additional XP bonus.

Slaying Banished foes will award Personal Score throughout the entire round that will level up your Career Rank, and Skulls will also net players a stacking Personal Score bonus at the end of each round won for every Skull that is enabled.

What maps will I be able to play at launch?

We have nine maps available when Firefight: King of the Hill launches with the December 2023 Update, which includes three community-made maps, five existing developer-made maps, and the new House of Reckoning map from Halo Infinite’s campaign.

The nine maps featured in the Firefight: King of the Hill playlist are:

    • House of Reckoning
    • Behemoth
    • Deadlock
    • Launch Site
    • Live Fire
    • Oasis
    • Exiled (by Epetr0, SandoChokUN)
    • Kusini Bay (by Mr Kwatz)
    • Vallaheim (by HaiseOz)

What kind of Custom Game options are available?

We’ve mentioned some of the levers you can pull in Custom Games to change your Firefight: KOTH experience to suit your taste. We wanted to offer up a wealth of options to feed your Custom Game Browser nights and let you play Halo the way you want to play. You can decide what elements of the mode will be active; you can change how Lives, Revives, and Skulls are used; you can tweak hill capture timers, and even override which units spawn in each wave.

Here are screencaps of the many Custom Game options you’ll get your hands on at launch!

And for the Forgers out there, you’ll find that Firefight: KOTH is the most integrated with Forge and Node Graph scripting yet. You can set the mode to use the enemy definitions straight from your spawners and make the hills spawn in the fixed order, paving the way for linear, wave-based missions.

The Skulls we converted to multiplayer are also available through Node Graph to use in any game mode. And the AI Wave Manager nodes that we were able to get to players early with the launch of Season 5 is the same one we built for Firefight: KOTH. That means you’ll be able to hook into mode events to run custom logic when waves start or end.

For example, using the new Wave Type output pin, this sample script would run any time the mode starts a Boss Wave. Then it would pick two random units and send every Grunt in their squad into an explosive frenzy.

We can’t wait to see what horrors and delights you’ll inflict on all of us in the Custom Game Browser come launch!

    In the meantime–

    [*Phantom horn sound*]

Here we go! Next wave’s coming in. Get set, Spartans. This is gonna get hot!

  • Reclaim The Wilderness in Against The Storm – A Roguelite City Builder Coming to PC Game Pass

Reclaim The Wilderness in Against The Storm – A Roguelite City Builder Coming to PC Game Pass

    Reading Time: 5 minutes

Greetings! My name is Łukasz, and I’m here to tell you a little about your new duties as Viceroy for the Scorched Queen, our protector and ruler of civilization’s last bastion against the Blightstorm.

Against the Storm is a roguelite city builder where every run is a bite-sized city-building experience with a distinct variety of problems to solve. It’s set in a fantasy world inhabited by Humans, Beavers, Lizards, Harpies, and Foxes who stand united against hidden dangers and never-ending rains.

Your task is to settle the untamed wilds and gather valuable resources necessary to rebuild the Smoldering City – the only safe haven from the apocalyptic storms. You are responsible for managing resources, allocating workers, and building up supply chains across multiple production buildings.

However, the Queen wouldn’t send her elite overseers if these expeditions were so mundane – there’s a catch.

You only have a subset of all the buildings at your disposal and it is up to you to draft or otherwise acquire the best blueprints for the job. Due to the scarcity of resources and limited workforce, you will often find yourself wrangling with both recipes and villagers within this industrial pyramid.

This is done while you’re also tending to your villagers’ needs and deciding which tasks to accomplish to keep the Queen content. She is not indifferent to your struggles and will occasionally offer you powerful perks. Different combinations of effects can create synergies that may change the fate of the settlement.

Your guiding principle is to “play the hand you’re dealt”. Trying to repeat the same strategy over and over will quickly get you in trouble. Adapt and experiment. Make the most out of the tools at hand.  Short on meat? No problem. Turn insects into skewers instead. The lizard gatherers may not love you for that, but they’ll appreciate it more than raw veggies!

But beware – there are forces at work that are constantly trying to halt your efforts. The recurring Storms are a true test of the town’s worth and your management skills. Meanwhile, the forests will fight your progress with seasonal curses and ominous beasts that guard rich glades. Not to mention that our Queen is not the most patient of rulers and will pull the rug out from under your settlement if you fail to prove its sustainability.

Yet, should you succeed, she will reward you handsomely with meta resources which can be spent on permanent upgrades. After that, it’s time to move on to the next settlement! Study the world map for promising locations and lucrative events. If you’re brave enough, you can even attempt to reforge the Ancient Seals and delay the Blighstorm by a few years.

Against the Storm offers the complexity and depth of multi-layered city builders condensed into accessible sessions, each completable in a single evening. The generous progression system and vast upgrade tree always give you something to work towards.

With six mechanically distinct biomes, dozens of gameplay modifiers, and hundreds of perks, each new settlement feels as novel as the first and poses a different set of challenges to deal with. And that’s what you’re here for, Viceroy. May the storm be gentle on you!

Add Against the Storm to your Play List and reclaim the wilderness when the game enters PC Game Pass on December 8.

    Xbox Live

    Against the Storm

    Hooded Horse

You are the Viceroy – a leader charged by the Scorched Queen to reclaim the wilderness and discover lost riches for the Smoldering City, civilization’s last bastion against the Blightstorm that destroyed the old world. Unlike most survival city builders where your focus is on a single city, in Against the Storm you must build a vast, prosperous network of settlements populated by diverse fantasy races, each with their own specializations and needs. The wilderness holds many hidden dangers, and never-ending storms will batter your population into submission. If your settlements should fall, then the expedition may end – but not the game. Against the Storm is a roguelite city builder, meaning you will carry forward the resources, upgrades, and experience of your past expeditions each time you set off for a new journey into the wild. MANAGE A DIVERSE POPULATION OF VILLAGERS
Foxes, Beavers, and lizards stand alongside humans and harpies in the struggle to survive. Utilize each group’s strengths as you balance their varying needs, from housing and culinary preferences to taste in luxuries and recreation. Will you manufacture raincoats, brew ale, and bake pies to boost morale in the face of the oppressive hostility of the forest, or will you prioritize the needs of one species over another to operate more swiftly for the Scorched Queen? CITY BUILDER MEETS ROGUELITE
Experience core city builder gameplay enhanced by roguelite replayability. Build and manage multiple settlements spread out across a large world map, all while collecting valuable meta-progression resources to upgrade the Smoldering City. Feel the pressure of an expectant monarch as the Scorched Queen demands constant progress while recurring Blightstorms pose an inevitable threat to your settlements. Manage your reputation to secure your success at any one settlement before moving on to establish another, constantly seeking new opportunities for growth, taking on unique challenges across multiple biomes, and bracing for the inevitable destruction of everything but the Smoldering City itself. How will you maximize each cycle to not just ensure the best fate for the Smoldering City, but for your career as Viceroy as well? NEVER THE SAME GAME TWICE
With hundreds of gameplay modifiers and five distinct biomes, every city location presents unique challenges for even the most resourceful Viceroy. Adjust your strategy to changing weather conditions and experiment with rosters of building blueprints and perks that can help your society thrive or bring it to ruin. Will you take on and complete additional objectives and delve deeper into the dangerous forest for potential boons, or will you approach with caution to ensure you operate within your capabilities? All the while, you never know what wares the Trader will bring next year, and the forest holds treasures and resources, but also ancient threats. BUILD AN ENDLESS NUMBER OF CITIES
Laying the foundations for a new city is one of the most exciting moments in a city-building game. In Against the Storm, you’ll have the opportunity to repeatedly experience this by creating new settlements, while still interacting with your network of previously established cities in a growing world.

  • 10 Things to Do In Night City With Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition

10 Things to Do In Night City With Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition

    Reading Time: 5 minutes

After the thrilling release of Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty earlier this year, we’re excited to now offer players the full package in the form of Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition! Containing the base game, its spy-thriller expansion, and the game-changing Update 2.0, it’s the ultimate Cyberpunk experience — and it’s out today! You can snag a physical copy for your Xbox Series X at select retailers or download the digital version for Xbox Series X|S.

To celebrate the game’s availability, we’re also launching the free Update 2.1, featuring brand-new features like the much-requested Radioport, a functional metro system, hangouts with partners in V’s apartment, and much more. Later in the month, we’ve got a treat for every Night Citizen — a full game booklet containing developer interviews, insights into the game’s creation, and a healthy dose of inspiration straight from the people who created the game.

Before the full booklet comes out, we’ve got an exclusive excerpt to share with you, featuring ten things you’ll definitely want to try your hand at, whether you’re a brand-new merc or an Afterlife legend. Let’s dive in!

    Shoot some street photography

Every district here has its own flavor and feel, so what’s one of the best ways to immerse yourself in the local vibes? Photography! Take in the sights and see life through the lens of an NC native by taking preem shots across every district. That’s right, time to enter full-on Photo Mode. If you wanna admire the sights but don’t wanna cross paths with scavs, cyberpsychos, or bored street gangoons, use those handy new sightseeing binos and enjoy the city’s vista points from a safe distance.

    Travel on the NCART

Who said getting around has to be a chore? Travel in NC is surprisingly efficient, and we say the NCART sky metro is one of the coolest (and safest) ways to get from A-B. Tickets are pretty cheap, so consider taking a smooth ride on public transit before going bumper to bumper with gonk city drivers.

    Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition Screenshot

    Ride the rollercoaster in Pacifica

Pacifica was supposed to be a booming vacay resort, the perfect place to chill and indulge in all the pleasures the oh-so-wonderful megacorp bottom line could muster. Obviously, it all went to hell, but you can still find some moments of joy amidst the ruins. The broken down roller coaster seems primed for a jumpstart, so if you’re up for a thrillride and willing to put the work in, you might just be able to capture a moment of what this forgotten district should have been in the first place.

    Discover preem arcade classics

Back in the day, kids and kid-like adults would burn eddies and hours breaking their fingers to get high scores in the local arcades. It’s a bust business now, what with BDs and the like, but we’ve recently discovered some absolute classics — playable if you find an arcade machine in working order. Roach Race and Trauma Drama — ahhh, now they take me back.

    Explore Dogtown

Okay, yes you’d have to be desperate to even try to break into Dogtown — and we don’t usually encourage our readers to risk their lives getting into what most people call the ‘deadliest district’ of Night City — but if you’re dead set on seeing all there is to see in Night City, it might be worth it. Who knows, with a little patience, an opportunity to get through those impenetrable walls in Pacifica might even present itself to you. Crazier things have happened! Anyway, from what we hear, you can bag some sweet deals in that black market… just try not to piss off Hansen and Barghest while you’re at it.

    Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition Screenshot

    Join the gig economy

Corps might rule Night City but we also have a thriving business of badass entrepreneurs. Mercs, edgerunners, cyberpunks — they go by many names, but the best thing about them is there’s always work to be done. Fixers are always in need of individuals with special skills, so if you wanna try your hand then keep an eye out for lucrative gigs. Eddies and street cred await!

    Help fight crime

Gangers think they run this town. Sure, it’s hard to argue when they’ve got a gun in your face with their finger on the trigger, but it’s high time someone put these gonks in their place. The NCPD is understaffed and… well, let’s just leave it at that — so if you’ve got the gear to lend a hand and chip away at the daily crime statistics, you’re bound to be well rewarded. Stay tuned for NCPD alerts across the city; there’s always a crime in progress.

    Change your entire self!

Y’know what they say: Night City Changes Every Body. Whether you’re bored of your looks or you just wanna try something new, head to any ripperdoc and they’ll be able to sculpt your appearance however you wish. And hey, while you’re at it, why not get chipped with some chrome? Can you really say you’ve been to Night City if you haven’t refreshed your implants?

    Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition Screenshot

    Indulge in some romance

Got a special someone you just love spending time with? First, good for you! Who knew you could find love amidst the chaos of Night City, huh? Sometimes a quiet moment with your soulmate is all you need to recharge and feel content, and believe me that’s a rare thing in this screwed up world we live in. So go on, give that lucky person a call on the holo and forget about everything else for a bit. Date night ftw! Or, you know, if you’re not currently seeing someone, you can always go visit Jig Jig Street for some late-night fun…

    Settle down

Can’t stop digging Night City? Try out life in different districts by checking out the apartment rental market! EZEstates on the Net has you covered, whether you’re yearning for the high-life in Corpo Plaza or the gritty feel of Japantown. And what the hell, while you’re in the shopping mood check out the Autofixer site to claim some sweet wheels of your own. A house and a car: ain’t that the life?

    Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition Screenshot

Feeling inspired? Jump into Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition and try out the full list! The game and the free Update 2.1 are out now Xbox Series X|S — so see you in Night City.

Introducing Botany Manor, A Narrative Puzzle Adventure Blooming onto Xbox Game Pass Spring 2024

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Hi, Xbox Wire readers! Whitethorn Games has some fantastic news to share with you about Balloon Studios’ upcoming plant-puzzle adventure game, Botany Manor. Today, we’re extremely excited to announce that the game is set to release in Spring 2024 on Xbox Series X|S and will be available on day one with Xbox Game Pass!

Botany Manor introduces the vibrant, plant-filled world of Arabella Greene and her manor. Among the 19th-century architecture lies long-forgotten plants with a mysterious past. Take on the role of retired botanist Arabella Greene as she searches her estate for clues to help restore these long-forgotten flora to their former glory.

    Blossom with Clues

Botany Manor, at its core, is a puzzle-adventure game with a narrative strewn about the manor to provide you insight into the lives, careers, and challenges women scientists faced during the 19th century through the lens of Arabella.

Each seed requires a unique set of circumstances to help it bloom, as these rare flowers, fungi, and assorted flora hail from extraordinary environments, such as flowers that only reveal their splendor during lightning storms and blooms that flourish in fiery-hot volcanic landscapes. With more to discover, it is up to you to determine how to create the perfect environment for each one to thrive.

As you explore the manor, you will find clues through notes, books, posters, and other items scattered around Arabella’s manor. Some interactable items will allow you to turn and flip them to help in their search to solve each gardening puzzle. Along the way, you’ll be able to keep track of your newly collected clues in your very own herbarium!

    Nature is Everywhere

It wouldn’t be Botany Manor without the presence of beautiful plant life. Pairing perfectly with Arabella’s lifetime of memorabilia and a calming soundtrack, the manor fully immerses you in a cozy world of nature and serenity. There’s no rush to solve the gardening puzzles, so sit back, smell the roses, and take in everything Botany Manor has to offer!

    Accessibility is in the Roots

At Whitethorn Games, we want to ensure all players have a chance to enjoy the beautiful and serene world of Botany Manor. With this in mind, here are a couple of our adjustable and accessible settings:

    • PC – Mouse and keyboard and full gamepad controller support
    • Single-stick gameplay supported
    • Sprint with a hold or a toggle
    • Separate adjustable audio channels for sound effects, music, and max volume
    • Opaque black background with white sans-serif text for clear readability
    • Invert camera controls
    • Adjustable camera sensitivity and smoothing

These are only a handful of settings players can use to customize their experience to best suit their needs and playstyle.

We hope you enjoy this preview of Balloon Studio’s stunning debut title, Botany Manor, coming to Xbox X|S, available on day one with Xbox Game Pass in Spring 2024.
