So, I’m happy to go book-club with Homelander, but that isn’t what got us in the door. We’re here because Homelander is awesome, great, and terrible, in the way a nova or rogue wave or H-bomb has those qualities. He is the merciless last boss of a story with no credible heroes in sight. That’s what punches our ticket. Later, we can see he’s lonely, juvenile, and tortured, despite unmatchable powers… that he’s, if not sympathetic, at least understandable. Few people would choose the life that made him so strong but so cruel. And what better fit could there be for Mortal Kombat, a hard-edged universe where we sometimes half-joke there are no good guys?
After careful preparation, we began work. Nailing tone was key. “Does this feel like Homelander?” Was our guiding-light question applied to everything: poses, movement, sound effects, facial expressions, hand gestures, even the set of a shoulder or angle of a dangling foot. Homelander’s central emotion is a bottomless contempt, which he struggles to hide for the sake of appearance. Watching that mask slip is the show’s core tension (and most perverse joy), and we strove to maintain that here.
On the way to the cafeteria at the NetherRealm Studios offices, we have a large poster of Ermac hanging on the wall. Seeing it often reminds me how far he has evolved over the years. Back in the early days before the Internet, rumors often ran rampant about him and drove all kinds of speculation, particularly in the arcades. In the first Mortal Kombat arcade game, there was a diagnostic called ERMACS short for “Error Macro” that appeared underneath the number of “Reptile Appearances” and “Reptile Battles,” and it was therefore assumed by sleuthing fans that there must be a hidden character in the game. Over time, these rumors had taken on a life of their own and wound up being the catalyst to Ermac’s eventual creation and inclusion as a playable fighter in Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3.
Since the character’s arrival, Ermac has always been a vessel for souls and would use these souls to manipulate their energy for his own devious purposes. For Mortal Kombat 1, we wanted to further evolve the visual presentation of Ermac by leaning heavily into certain horror inspirations, and then explore the idea that Ermac has been haunted by unique souls he has captured throughout his existence. The collective of tortured souls include: the Witch, the Old Woman, the Monster, and the Soldier, each one playing a key role throughout Ermac’s move set. For Ermac’s classic Lift special move, the Witch’s soul bursts outward from Ermac to lift the opponent and slam them to the ground. The idea that these unique souls manifest themselves throughout his attacks is a common theme we wanted to showcase.
To me, one of the most compelling aspects to the design and implementation of Ermac was the challenge he presented to us. The last time we saw Ermac in a Mortal Kombat game as a playable fighter was in Mortal Kombat X, and we are lightyears ahead in terms of our capabilities from a visual perspective since then. For us, this meant an opportunity to evolve the look of his soul energy to create intricate visual effects-based attacks that help sell the unique telekinesis power he possesses. The inherent challenge is to ensure the visual elements are impactful, blend well with the gameplay elements, and are readable to the player. This is something the design and visual effects teams are constantly iterating on.
Gameplay wise, Ermac stands out as a character with interesting combo potential and routes, especially from the air. In terms of special moves, he employs a variety of his mainstay special attacks as well as new additions for Mortal Kombat 1. One of the main design goals was to evolve and showcase his classic attacks in a distinctive way while at the same time creating new special moves that both serve his gameplay plan while giving players a fresh experience. For instance, Ermac can still perform his Teleport attack but can now initiate it from either the air or ground then cancel it into an air or ground version just before he teleports acting as a mind game with options for different setups.
One of his new special moves is a Mana Shield where one of his souls creates a shield around him whereby incoming damage depletes his super meter instead of his health. Additionally, he has another new attack where he violently ejects souls upward, capable of launching the opponent and allowing Ermac to dash cancel out of. Lastly, one of my personal favorites and something players will want to check out is a brutality we created off Ermac’s Lift special move, which is a clear nod to his telekinesis Fatality from Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3.
Working on klassic characters for a new Mortal Kombat game is almost a sacred responsibility, let alone one of the ninjas. I joined the team many years ago for the first Injustice game and I will always remember the surreal moment working on Scorpion attacks for the first time. This responsibility is a sentiment shared by everyone on the team. We are all very pleased to bring Ermac back in Mortal Kombat 1and hope players enjoy playing him as much as the team did working on him.

No longer Quan Chi’s slave, nor bound to a royal family, Ermac must find a future worth fighting for. This pack includes playable character Ermac including all new movesets.
After working at NetherRealm Studios for more than 10 years, I have experienced my fair share of memorable days as part of the design department, but the day we all learned we would be designing Peacemaker for Mortal Kombat 1 was certainly one of the best. The only concern I had was the possibility of designers fighting each other on who would take the coveted role of point person. In all seriousness though, when we heard this news, we immediately started sharing clips from the show and brainstorming ideas.
The reason for all the excitement speaks to how much we love the character and series. The humor resonates with our own, and I think if we were to design our own superhero, it would be heavily inspired by elements of Peacemaker.
From day one, it was clear to us that translating Peacemaker into Mortal Kombat 1 was going to be exciting. The first part was to craft a gameplay design around a core set of attacks and special moves while then layering in reference after reference and adding very specific details to the way the attacks look and feel. This meant watching and re-watching scenes of show while meticulously noting details that stuck out to us.
One of our favorite scenes from the show was the first time we get to see Peacemaker use the Sonic Boom helmet. The butterfly girl he had been fighting leapt into the air to attack, but Peacemaker was able to activate Sonic Boom in time to vaporize her. It was a shocking moment as we are left with a shot of Peacemaker sitting on the ground completely stunned at what just transpired.
When we went to create Peacemaker’s Brutality with the Sonic Boom, we wanted to mimic very specific details that stood out to us like capturing that last shot of Peacemaker sitting on ground in total shock. Additionally, we created a Brutality from the scene in the show where he made a homemade grenade using a tank shell. We even created new blood splats with bigger spreads and longer meteors of meat bits to better mimic those on the show. In all, this is the part of the design process that we have a lot of fun with.
As we were developing Peacemaker in Mortal Kombat 1, we believed it was critical to showcase his over-the-top personality everywhere possible. This becomes a summation of nuances, voiceover, dialog, motions, and mannerisms that are keys to how we wanted to convey Peacemaker’s unique personality to the audience. This is always important but especially in this case because of how familiar players are with this character, and anything slightly off will be noticed right away.
Fortunately, we had the pleasure of working directly with John Cena who delivered an impeccable performance (no surprise) as Peacemaker in the game, adding the ultimate level of credibility to the voice capture and dialog. In the mocap studio, we closely studied Peacemaker’s mannerisms, oftentimes bringing up clips from the show on the big screen and comparing them with the actor’s performance as we captured the motions to ensure they were reading like Peacemaker. As you might expect, there were a lot of laughs in between takes as some of the more the comedic moments were shining through.
Gameplay-wise, Peacemaker was designed to have a straight-forward and accessible playstyle. We wanted to prominently feature both his helmet attacks and coordination with Eagley, the character’s loyal bald eagle sidekick. For the helmet attacks, we needed to design special moves that supported both his gameplay design and references we felt were important from the show. For his helmet-centric moves, he will employ his torpedo attack and anti-gravity abilities that allows him to float up and slam down over opponents, with the enhanced version of this move acting as an evade with additional options to cancel out.
For Eagley’s attacks, we were looking to design meaningful special moves that would be helpful in certain situations. For instance, Eagley can attack an opponent’s Kameo Fighter, mauling them and shutting down their use. For a few of us, the funniest move Peacemaker has is his blow dart special move, which fans should recognize from The Suicide Squad(2021)movie. In-game, he is in the same sneaking stance and can move forward and back while holding the blow dart, which can be released at any time and is designed to hit opponents out of the air.
It would be an understatement to say it was a privilege for us to design and develop Peacemaker in Mortal Kombat 1. This was one of the most collaborative and fun experiences we’ve had as a design group so far. We feel that Peacemaker is a great fit for the Mortal Kombat Universe, and we can’t wait for players to get their hands on him. Peacemaker will be available on Feb. 28 as part of the early access period for Mortal Kombat 1 Kombat Pack owners, followed by wide availability on March 6. A trial version of Mortal Kombat 1 will be available to play for all Game Pass Core and Game Pass Ultimate subscribers as part of Xbox Free Play Days from March 7-10, with access to all multiplayer game modes, the first two chapters of the cinematic Story mode, the base roster of iconic characters, and more.

The Kahnum has returned! Fan-favorite fighter, Mileena, is making her way to Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate.
Real quick before we talk about her ferocious fighting style, let’s do a lore recap. After the death of Shao Kahn in the 2011 reboot of Mortal Kombat, Mileena took over the title of Kahnum. Just like Mileena herself, her rule was chaotic, and she was deposed by Kotal Kahn. She attempted to win her throne back but failed. Mileena was then executed by D’Vorah with a bug-filled smooch that will not be winning best kiss at any Hollywood award show. Thanks to Kronika’s meddling with time, Mileena is back and looking to control the hourglass’ power. She wants to rewrite history and create the world she believes she was born to rule.
“A million souls have cried out for my return.” —Mileena
If you’re a fan of Mileena from any era, you will love how she plays here. First off, Mileena now has a sharp set of claws to slash through her opponents. Mileena’s base moveset can be likened to Klassic Mortal Kombat II with all of the core moves that you’d expect, including her trademark sai and her ball roll for starters. Her core moveset also includes the teleport kick, which when amplified ends as a throw and allows you to choose which direction to toss your opponent. For fans of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, look out for a fun Easter egg, her UMK3 Kombo is back!
Mileena gains new moves in her custom abilities. She has a new command grab that turns your opponent’s head into a pin cushion, a player-controllable sai that travels across the ground and the Kahnum dash, a slide that can be amplified TWICE!
We’re also debuting a few skins different skins for Mileena:
Dangerous Allure (above) — A modern reimagining of Mileena’s Klassic ninja outfit, and her main skin.
True Kahunum — garb worn by the heir to Shao Kahn.
Beauty of the Beast — bringing out Mileena’s savage Tarkatan side.
Malign Presence — A colorful variant of Mileena’s main outfit.
Mileena rolls into Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate on November 17 for PS5 and PS4. Pre-order now at PlayStation Store or on console, as well as other retailers, and get access to the Time Warriors Skin Pack at launch featuring a new character skin for Noob Saibot, Liu Kang and Skarlet.
Fellow Fighters, at long last, Rambo joins fellow 1980s action movie icons RoboCop and the Terminator as part of Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate and Kombat Pack 2. We at NetherRealm Studios couldn’t be more excited about Rambo joining the fight.
Drawing inspiration from the first three films in the Rambo series – First Blood, Rambo: First Blood Part II, and Rambo III – our gameplay designers looked to distill the essence of his particular style of combat. That’s why our Rambo, as he does in the films, relies more on stealth than he does on gunplay. He uses the environment itself as a weapon, deploying a variety of traps which use elements like tripwires, swinging logs and hidden mines. Of course, Rambo is also famous for his skill with a knife and compound bow. Both are a core part of his moveset and are used in very distinct ways.
As with all of our guest fighters, our visual artists worked diligently to recreate Rambo’s classic look and feel. They carefully studied the early films, going frame by frame to catalog the details of his wardrobe and weapons. As part of this work, our character team fully reproduced Rambo’s two iconic looks from First Blood – his drifter look from the top of the film and his guerilla warfare look from the film’s epic climax. The end result of their work is stunning. Rambo looks like he stepped right out of the original movies and into Mortal Kombat 11.
Knowing that Sylvester Stallone would return to voice the character made the stakes for getting the lines right very high. All of the hard work to perfect the script paid off when we finally got to record it. Stallone enthusiastically jumped into the performance, bringing the words to life in exactly the way we had hoped.
For me, getting to work with a legendary actor as he plays one his most iconic roles was a thrilling experience. As a Voiceover Director, it doesn’t get any better. My favorite memory of the session was the sound of Stallone chuckling. As he performed the lines, he noticed the many references we had included, not only from the Rambo films, but also from the rest of his body of work. When you play, listen closely to the banter for references to The Expendables, Cliffhanger, Demolition Man and more. It was a real kick to see that he was so entertained. Hopefully, Rambo fans will have as much fun with the experience as did the man himself.
Rambo skins in order: First Blood, Flaming Dart, Airborne, Warfighter
Don’t forget, Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate and Kombat Pack 2 pre-orders on PlayStation 4 are available now via the PlayStation Store, as well as other retailers, giving players access to the Time Warriors Skin Pack at launch featuring a new character skin for Noob Saibot, Liu Kang and Skarlet.

Fellow fighters, at long last, fan-favorite characters Mileena and Rain are joining the fight! Along with the classic action hero, Rambo, they all join the roster as part of Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate, the definitive, all-in-one Mortal Kombat 11 experience. Our designers and artists have polished every detail of each character’s presentation. The gameplay is awesome, the Fatalities are gruesome and the looks are killer.
Rain now wields a katar, which he uses to slash and stab his opponents. Rain can also use his magic to open a rift to a previously unknown watery realm. Here, all of his classic moves are reimagined. His water powers are also expressed in new and unique ways.
Along with her traditional sais, Mileena now also has razor-sharp claws. They come courtesy of the gloves that she wears in to kombat. The gloves and her other gear look stellar. My favorite look is that of Kahnum Mileena, where she gets her own Shao Kahn style helmet.
Playing as Rambo is like time-traveling back with Kronika to 1982. Our character artists have perfectly captured Rambo’s look from “First Blood.” They, along with our design and cinematics teams, drew great inspiration from that film, as well the subsequent sequels. Of course, having Sylvester Stallone voice one of his most iconic characters is an absolute thrill. We worked hard to make sure that every line of dialogue was true to the Rambo that fans know and love.
In addition to these three amazing new characters that make up Kombat Pack 2, Mortal Kombat 11: Ultimate is stuffed with all of the great content that has been released thus far. It includes every mode, every character and every feature from the main game, Kombat Pack 1 and the Aftermath Expansion. Those who purchase Mortal Kombat 11: Ultimate will also receive both of the cinematic story campaigns – the base game’s original story and the story expansion released with Aftermath, continuing the epic Mortal Kombat 11 saga.
Additionally, Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate is PlayStation 5 Upgrade Available, delivering 4K dynamic resolution, enhanced visuals, improved loading times and cross-generation console compatibility for select modes. And current Mortal Kombat 11 and Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate owners and new buyers on PlayStation 4 can access a free upgrade to the PS5 version of their game at no extra cost, available in conjunction with the Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate launch. There’s also Krossplay support, allowing PS5 and PS4 players to fight against other players on opposite platforms in select modes.
Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate will be available globally beginning Nov. 17 on the PlayStation Store via the web and console, as well as other retailers. For new players, Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate pre-orders will be available beginning October 15, providing immediate access to Mortal Kombat 11, Kombat Pack 1 and the Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath Expansion upon purchase.
If you already own Mortal Kombat 11, you can upgrade your experience by pre-ordering Kombat Pack 2 beginning October 15, or by purchasing Kombat Pack 1 or the Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath Expansion. And don’t forget, Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate and Kombat Pack 2 preorders will receive the Time Warriors Skin Pack at launch featuring three new character skin variants, including “Dark Web” Noob Saibot, “HCF” (Halt and Catch Fire) Liu Kang and “Blood Moon” Skarlet.
Stay tuned for more info on Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate as we get closer to launch!
Hello, fellow fighters. We at NetherRealm are super excited to continue to fulfill everyone’s 80’s movie robot dreams with the addition of RoboCop in Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath, our exciting, new expansion. We just dropped a new gameplay trailer showing off RoboCop, along with Fujin and Sheeva, who are all coming to Mortal Kombat 11 on May 26.
I clearly remember watching the “RoboCop” film when I was a kid, although I was probably far too young when I saw it. In fact, I was so in love with the movie that I asked for the RoboCop game on my Amiga 500 but only got to play it twice before the disk became corrupted. So, it’s great to finally get to play as RoboCop in Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath.
ED-209 provides backup.
I am far from being the only RoboCop fan in our studio. A few of the character artists on my team have ED-209 and RoboCop figurines on their desks. We even scanned one of these figurines to use as a reference for modeling out ED-209 which you’ll see in Mortal Kombat 11.
Being able to scan and record Peter Weller for the RoboCop model, as well as talk to him about the role, was invaluable. He gave me some great insight into what it was like playing the character, which allowed us to capture the essence of RoboCop. As a bonus, he gave me a crash course in Italian Renaissance art while he was in the studio being scanned. You may not know this but Dr. Weller has a Ph.D. in Italian Renaissance Art History and Roman History.
Mortal Kombat 3 Cyber Ninja RoboCop
With our guest fighters, we always ensure that we give the players as many iconic and authentic character attributes as possible. Pallets for RoboCop in Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath are an excellent example of this. As RoboCop fans will remember, the original “RoboCop” film featured a gray suit, while the “RoboCop 2” outfit was much bluer. You will find both of these options in the Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath expansion. As is customary with our guest characters, RoboCop also gets a NetherRealm Studios version, this time it’s a Mortal Kombat 3 Cyber Ninja RoboCop variant.
RoboCop, just thinking about stopping a crime.
We had loads of fun working on RoboCop, packing in as many character references as possible. And we’re excited that our fans will get to play everyone’s 80’s cyborg fantasy, matching RoboCop against the Terminator.
Don’t forget, Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath will be available digitally first on May 26. And if you purchase early on PS4, you’ll get a free Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath dynamic theme showcasing Raiden and Liu Kang, which was custom made by the NetherRealm team and features music from the game.
Mortal Kombat and Todd McFarlane’s Spawn were both unleashed on the world in 1992. Their dark stories and authenticity quickly seized the public’s imagination. Now, 28 years later, these storied franchises have finally united in Mortal Kombat 11 with Spawn joining the roster as the latest playable fighter. It’s a match made in heaven, or is it one made in hell?
The Custom Skin – NetherRealm’s uniquely sinister take on Spawn.
From the outset, Spawn’s many passionate fans here at NetherRealm were obsessed with giving this devil his due. We knew that to portray Spawn properly, we first needed to nail the presentation of his trademark weapons — his iconic cape and chains.
The iconic Spawn outfit.
To perfect these items, our studio leads formed a cross-discipline strike team. They met regularly for over six months to develop the tools necessary for our designers and artists to fully explore their imaginations. As a result, Spawn’s cape and chains are fully integrated into his core gameplay. Not only can the cape be used as both an offensive and defensive weapon, it can also be used to help Spawn take flight! In Spawn’s Fatality, “Rest in Pieces,” his cape and chains work together to orchestrate a symphony of blood. As Spawn’s cape grabs the beaten opponent, his chains tear him or her apart.
This Spawn outfit directly references his comic book origins.
With these foundational elements in place, our game designers then set out to showcase Spawn’s many other abilities. They came up with numerous moves inspired by the original comics, including creating illusions, conjuring demons and blasting opponents with Necroplasm. This attention to detail extended to other disciplines as well. The story team dug deep into Spawn’s lore to build emotional connections between him and our Mortal Kombat characters so that we could explore them in his in-game dialogue. We were excited to discover just how much Spawn had to say.
Spawn’s Commando outfit means business.
Our excitement only grew when we learned that actor Keith David, the original voice of Spawn, would be reprising his role in Mortal Kombat 11. Keith voiced the character in “Todd McFarlane’s Spawn,” the Emmy award-winning HBO animated series, so it was a dream come true — not only for us, but for Keith himself. He came to the voiceover sessions positively thrilled to be back in the role, and his enthusiasm shines through in every aspect of his performance.
The Matinee Skin Pack features “Osh Tekk Vandal” Kotal Kahn, “Swashbuckler” Erron Black and “Space Marine” Jacqui Briggs
The new Spawn-inspired character skin, “Hellspawn” Jacqui Briggs
Very soon, gamers across the globe will get to share our excitement for Spawn when he joins Mortal Kombat 11 on March 17 as part of the early access period for Kombat Pack owners, followed by wide (à la carte) availability on March 24. Kombat Pack owners will also have access to the “Hellspawn” Jacqui Briggs skin and Matinee Skin Pack on March 17. We hope you enjoy!
The entire team at NetherRealm is thrilled to add The Joker as the latest guest fighter to join the Mortal Kombat 11 roster. The Clown Prince of Crime is definitely an easy fit and a welcomed addition to the Mortal Kombat universe. Although we’ve worked with The Joker character before, our designers and artists were unleashed to plumb the depths of his madness like never before. The result is the nastiest and most vicious version of The Joker that our studio has ever created.
There are many gameplay examples that showcase this dark portrayal, including The Joker’s Fatal Blow, where the infamous clown hammers his opponent to a bloody pulp with a cane, which is a nod to the beating of Jason Todd in the classic comic book storyline from Batman: A Death in the Family.
Of course, this homage to The Joker’s lore is just one of many. Mortal Kombat fans are big supporters of when we honor a character’s past so our creative team always tries to dig deep. There are cinematic events that reinterpret famous comic book panels, dialogue that pays tribute to The Joker’s most memorable speeches and moves and moments that recall his previous visit to the Mortal Kombat universe.
The Mortal Kombat 11 crossover with DC Comics doesn’t end there, however. Our studio had a lot of fun designing new skins that mashup characters from the two universes. It’s almost Halloween in January as Kitana plays the sleek Katwoman of Outworld, Baraka transforms into the reptilian Killer Croc and Geras is reborn as the Time Lord of Apokolips, a perfect nod to Darkseid. The creative team’s favorite character skin though has to be The Batman Who Laughs version of Noob Saibot as the menacing Darkest Knight. It’s really a perfect blend of the characters and a perfect fit for Mortal Kombat 11. Don’t forget, The Joker DLC drops on January 28 as part of the early access period for Kombat Pack owners, followed by wide (à la carte) availability on February 4. Enjoy!
One of the many great things about working on NetherRealm games is the opportunity offered by DLC to add guest fighters to our titles. What’s more, these are usually iconic characters that I’ve grown up with and have had an impact on me as an artist.
The Terminator T-800 from the Terminator: Dark Fate film is such a great addition to Mortal Kombat 11. Everyone in the studio has so much love and respect for this character, and the amount of creative energy felt during the character creation process, along with everyone’s excitement during the final playthroughs, were incredible.
Although most of my work consists of reviewing and art directing assets for the character and prop teams, I also build character faces and facial rigs that drive our facial animations. As Arnold Schwarzenegger is arguably the most iconic action hero of all time, it was a real career highlight to work on his face and facial rig.
The team added a lot of new features, pushing everything to its technical limits to make all gameplay, intros, victories, Fatal Blows and Fatalities feel truly impressive. The character team worked hard to not only add new systems for all the Terminator dismemberment and Krushing Blow content but to also add new features enabling the addition of decal elements. These allowed us to give the Terminator several different shirt options.
We couldn’t do the Terminator without showing the T-800 endoskeleton. This is my favorite skin, the damage to the face and the revealed skull are just plain cool. In addition, the design team has really outdone themselves by adding a game mechanic that will have you fighting as the T-800 endoskeleton, if you have the right move equipped and you are at low health in the final round.
We also have additional character skins dropping with all this content, including Sonya Blade as a Cyborg Hunter, Kano as a cyborg in his Cash Machine Kano skin and Johnny Cage in a very expensive tuxedo, movie premiere-ready as Red Carpet Johnny Cage. These are great skins, especially the different tux color options for Johnny.
And we have a Cassie Cage as Harley Quinn character skin for Kombat Pack owners, which we’ve been looking forward to releasing. Not only is it a great visual, but it also adds some fun to Cassie’s costume options.
The opportunity to add Arnold Schwarzenegger as the Terminator T-800 to Mortal Kombat 11 has been nothing short of an amazing experience for everyone here at NetherRealm Studios, and it really shows off the huge amount of great creative content that has been added to the game. We hope you all feel the respect and love that we have for this brilliant character when the DLC drops on October 8 via early access for Kombat Pack owners and October 15 for wide (à la carte) availability.
And lastly, we have a Mortal Kombat 11 free trial coming up October 11-14 on PS4, where you’ll be able to preview all multiplayer game modes, a portion of the Story mode, the full base game roster of characters and some of the Kombat Pack fighters (Terminator T-800, Nightwolf and Shang Tsung) within the Towers of Time mode. If you haven’t played the game yet, feel free to check it out!
For Mortal Kombat 11, I oversaw character concepts and character model creation. There are a lot of great character skins in MK11, and here are a few that are not only visually awesome, but also stood out as memorable moments during the development of MK11.
Erron Black
One of the primary objectives for the MK11 visual design of characters was to ensure that the characters are easier to read during gameplay. To achieve this, we used bold confident shapes and rich color. In Erron Black’s case, we added clean, flat colored armor plates to his arms and legs. Adding these made his punches and kicks easier to read during kombat.
One of Erron Black’s concepts had a mask, which reminded me of an iconic Australian outlaw name Ned Kelly. This is how I got the idea of making a fully armored Ned Kelly skin for Erron Black. The quality of the final model and the fact that the Ned Kelly theme ties back to the stories from my childhood in Australia, make this skin one of my favorites.
Shao Kahn
Our goal was to have past and present versions of all characters. However, this did not work for Shao Kahn as he was meant to be dead in the present time. To solve this, we made a far past version of him. The idea was to make a version of Shao Kahn that would capture the way he looked when he was leading armies into battle. The concept turned out great, however, the execution of the model was not so easy and it took several artists to get it to this final quality. Not only does Shao Kahn have some of my favorite skins in the game, he has great gear as well. The helmets are especially awesome; one of my favorites can be seen here. (note: Shao Kahn available with pre-order)
Raiden
It’s hard to choose my favorite look for Raiden as I think they all look great. However, this skin is a combination of a number of creative ideas, seized opportunities and amazing technology. While building characters for MK11, we always look for the opportunity to create retro looks from earlier MK games. This Raiden’s skin is his MK2 look which, however, is presented here with one of the many different color schemes available in MK11.
In addition to that, the skin showcases the silk material which is one of several new material shading models we added in MK11. Fans of NetherRealm games may notice that we have used the same facial talent for Raiden in MK11 as we did for injustice 2. However, to achieve higher fidelity we wanted for MK11, the person was rescanned and Raiden’s face was completely rebuilt.
Cetrion
This is the dark side of the Mother Earth theme for Cetrion. This dark Cetrion skin contrasts with her lighter ones, showing the dual role mother nature must play to ensure balance. It was hard to design a skin that would embody the destructive side of mother nature but would not come across as evil. Achieving this made this one of my favorite character skins in the game. We are excited for the player to see all the skins for each character as they are designed to work together to tell the player more about the character.
