Fracked gameplay tips for saving the world

Tips to becoming the Action Hero

Fracked provides the ultimate power fantasy of stepping into the shoes of the action hero. It’s inspired by classic action cinema, made possible by video games, and enhanced by the power of VR. Take on the legions of interdimensional foes known as The Fracked, with total freedom of movement, one-to-one cover-based combat, and an arsenal of interactive and powerful weapons.

To celebrate launch week, let’s get into three key tips that’ll really help you kick crystalline butt this summer.

    1. Use the environment to your advantage

Just like any great action movie, you’re outnumbered and outgunned. You’re the first line of defence. Become the action hero. Save the planet. With a varied assortment of weapons, you’ll outsmart and outmanoeuvre the enemy. Using the environment to your advantage will be key to your success.

We’ve implemented an immersive grabbable cover mechanic, which totally grounds the player in the world. If it’s grabbable, it’s cover. On their own, The Fracked can be tackled easily. But once they descend in number, you’ll need to use cover tactically to avoid the onslaught and press your advantage. Run from cover-to-cover, get the best angles on your opponents, and feel like the unstoppable hero of the story that you are. Just don’t get cocky.

You’ll also have total freedom of movement at your disposal, with zip-lines allowing you to drop down on enemy positions. When the Fracked begin to swarm, you’re going to be thankful for these methods of escape and redirection that allow you to wrestle back control of the situation.

    2. Knowing when to use fight or flight

This fast-paced shooter has total freedom of movement. With a diverse range of traversal methods, coupled with intuitive one-to-one movement, you’ll be immersed into an action hero’s world that allows for speed, pace, and roleplay.

Fracked is not on rails. It provides you with the functionality that you’d expect in a traditional first person shooter, including the ability to strafe and walk backwards, all done with intuitive controls that ensure that you have choice and options when the bullets start flying.

Get amongst The Fracked, use your wits and your 360 degree movement to check all of your angles and chase them down. When the action heats up, look for cover, zip-lines, climbing points, and any other way out! Regroup, and get back in there.

On the ski slopes, the action doesn’t stop, it just gets faster. Naturally tilt your head left or right to control your direction of movement. Use the variety of different routes down the mountainside to avoid or take on enemy pursuers and guard towers! The head-based tracking of movement is a simple but elegant solution when your hands are occupied during a firefight.

    3. When to use your arsenal

In Fracked, you have a diverse range of firearms to help you combat any scenario, from our core interactive weapons to the limited-use special weapons. The grenade launcher that can stagger and bring down the hulking brute known as The Blaster. Once he’s down, shoot away at his weak spot. The revolver is powerful enough to shoot through walls, perfect to use behind cover, and can keep the explosive Screamers at bay with one shot. You’ll have to be reactive to every given situation, combing the environment for that perfect addition to your arsenal. Be resourceful with what you have or search for what you need to succeed.

Fracked’s striking game design choices ensure that fun is the priority. From an active reload system that doesn’t compromise on the game’s fast pace, to pulse-pumping on-ski shoot-outs as you outrun pursuing snowmobiles. Players will be treated to exciting combat scenarios worthy of the silver screen.

Get ready to save the planet

You embody the protagonist. An unshakeable reluctant hero. Calm and collected under pressure, he finds himself thrust into a fight for his life. Coupled with his ever-present sidekick, Rosalez, you must work together to overcome the explosive and otherworldly happenings in this remote mountain facility.

From heart-in-your-mouth shootouts to nail-biting set pieces, the pace and stakes remain high throughout your time with Fracked. Whether you’re desperately climbing around a broken funicular carriage as it teeters across a chasm or clutching to the landing gear of a helicopter as you’re peppered with incoming fire, Fracked will take you on a journey with an impressive degree of scope, all done to a powerful, punchy, and eclectic soundtrack that remixes everything from 90s rock, house, and 50s orchestral pieces.

Fracked launches on August 20 for those that haven’t pre-ordered the Deluxe Edition. We can’t wait for you to experience the action adventure of Fracked for yourself! Let us know what you’re most looking forward to in the comments below and please be sure to check out the Fracked Demo for yourself on the PlayStation Store.

  • Demo out today for Fracked, a fast-paced PS VR action game

Demo out today for Fracked, a fast-paced PS VR action game

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Our team is thrilled to share the opening chapters of their trailblazing PlayStation VR title, Fracked, available right now at PlayStation Store as a completely free-to-play demo! The full game has been confirmed as launching on August 20 and we cannot wait to hear your thoughts about this new action-adventure entry in the PS VR library.

Demo out today for Fracked, a fast-paced PS VR action game

    Play for yourself

You can now take to the Alaskan slopes with PlayStation Move and check out the explosive gameplay in Fracked for yourself by heading over to the PlayStation Store. The full game will be releasing to the public on August 20, with up to 72 hours of early access and bonus content for those of you who pre-order the Deluxe Edition.

What can you expect from the demo? An explosive mix of on-foot, climbing, and skiing gameplay all housed within the opening part of the game! Speed down snow-covered mountain caps, head into gun-fights, and take on relentless interdimensional foes.

    Early days and play style

From our experience with past titles, we knew we wanted to provide an immersive game with varied methods of traversal. Exploring those other traversal methods were a big inspiration for us. We knew climbing worked well in VR, and we also created a skiing demo that became so addictive that people kept coming back to play. We knew then that we had something really worth exploring.

The demo opens with our hero in the aftermath of an avalanche, and after signalling to mountain rescue for assistance, you’re tasked with outrunning the next impending snowdrift. This nail-biting ski section immediately immerses the player into the action from the start with intuitive 1:1 movement. After this epic escape, the experience switches gears to equally frenetic combat and climbing scenarios as you head deeper into the adventure.

    Game design and immersion

Grabbable cover is a core gameplay mechanic in Fracked which re-energises the genre. We’ve actually got a term for it called run and cover gunplay. That is a big part of the innovation in this game. These are concepts that would usually be at odds with each other but are designed to keep the combat fresh. One moment, as the hunter, you’re feeling like a real Hollywood action hero, but as you become overwhelmed, you intuitively grab cover for respite. As the power dynamic switches, cover becomes a necessary tactical strategy to outmaneuver the enemy as you become the prey.

There’s lots of fun arcade-like experiences in VR, but they’re generally short and often on-rails. We set out to provide our take on a more conventional campaign experience, with full freedom of movement. We wanted to provide players with well-trodden and much-loved conventional gameplay tactics, such as how to best flank an enemy position, then enhance it with VR. We wanted to demonstrate to a wider gaming audience that VR can evolve the typical gaming experience as well as provide unparalleled immersion.

    Roleplay and player enjoyment

We’ve learned that roleplay is incredibly important to premium-feeling VR experiences. Players want to embody a character and almost play the part, but it is a balancing act. You never want roleplay to get in the way of fun, and it should not come at the cost of player enjoyment. We set out to break convention and really deliver on a fast-paced, first-person shooter experience. This factored into the design of having new magazines appear below the gun for a manual reload, rather than you having to navigate an arbitrary menu or fumbling with virtual pouches. We don’t want gameplay mechanics breaking the thrilling pace of the action.

We feel that in VR you can get caught up on the technology and lose sight of what the gaming audience want, which is just a really fun game. With a great gaming experience as your priority, you ask yourself how VR can elevate tried and tested FPS sensibilities, rather than focusing on providing a VR tech demo. You need that player first mentality. How can VR improve gaming experiences?

    Quick Recap

The nDreams team can’t wait for you to get your hands on Fracked for yourself, and for you to experience this reimagining of the action-adventure genre. Fracked will launch globally on August 20, with Deluxe Edition access starting on August 17. You can check out the demo right now at PlayStation Store.

  • PS VR FPS adventure Fracked hits the slopes this summer

PS VR FPS adventure Fracked hits the slopes this summer

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

We’re extremely excited to be able to finally share an extended gameplay reveal for our upcoming action adventure title, Fracked. Grab your PlayStation Move controllers and watch the trailer below:

PS VR FPS adventure Fracked hits the slopes this summer

In this reveal, we wanted to showcase what Fracked does best – seamless, fast-paced action adventure gameplay, which will be experienced on-foot, and whilst skiing and climbing. Fracked equips you with an interactive arsenal, as well as special weapons, providing you with the tools to step into the shoes of an action hero.

Allow me to personally walk you through some of the game’s finer details, as shown throughout the course of the trailer!

    Freedom of Movement

Fracked is not an on-rails experience. You’ll be able to freely move (with 1:1 accuracy) throughout the level, whether that be on-foot, whilst climbing, on a zipline, or whilst hurtling down a mountain on your skis. The fluid action also provides you with cover shooter mechanics, giving you the freedom to intuitively grab environmental objects and use them to your advantage. On-foot movement is both instinctive and fast-paced. Aim your PlayStation Move controller in the direction you want to travel in (there’s absolutely no teleportation here).

    Interactive and Special Weapons

Yes, there’s a shotgun! This punch-packing firearm is just one of the special weapons that will help you take on the hive of interdimensional enemies infesting the mountainous fracking community. You’ll also have noticed the SMG, which requires you to grab a new magazine and cock the weapon to fire (just like our pistol). This immersive mechanic not only helps you feel the action, but it also adds a new dimension to gunplay. You’ll have to think on your feet and make every bullet count as you duck behind cover tactically.

    Become a Hero

With Fracked, we wanted to provide the ultimate power fantasy of embodying a movie action hero. Whilst a lot of this is directly driven by the gameplay and interactions you undertake; we took the bold decision to provide you with a voiced protagonist, providing a role-playing experience where you can become the hero by stepping into the role. Not only that, but as the ex-Special Forces hero in Fracked, you won’t be going it alone — you’ve got backup! Rosalez will be your perfect foil, an eco-warrior with a colourful personality and witty charm. She’s a companion you can count on when the bullets start flying.

    The Sky is the Limit

With a lot of video game experiences (even in VR), you’re stuck on a flat plane of existence… they’re often stationary with little lateral movement in the 3D space. With Fracked, we wanted to offer something more, a game that shows off the verticality of the virtual environment. The levels and world have been designed with this in mind, throwing you into the midst of imposing mountains, steep ski slopes, bottomless mine shafts, and the imposing corrugated steel behemoths of industry. Whilst on foot, you’ll be running, climbing, and ziplining through each level, all in a single seamless, action-focused experience. We want to push VR to new heights…pardon the pun.

    We’re all Fracked

The section you’ve seen is a very small part of the overall game. Everything you’ll see throughout the course of your Fracked mission can be visited, with your experience set on (and below) a singular mountain in the Alaskan wilds. In this extended gameplay trailer, we’ve given you just a taste of what’s to come, including a quick glimpse at the Blaster, a hulking brute you wouldn’t want to meet down a dark alley.

We can’t wait to show you more of Fracked and for you to finally get your hands on this PS VR exclusive this summer! Please do let us know in the comments what you’re most looking forward to.

  • Ausführliches Gameplay-Material zum exklusiven PS VR-Titel Fracked

Ausführliches Gameplay-Material zum exklusiven PS VR-Titel Fracked

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

  • PS VR action-adventure Fracked launches this summer

PS VR action-adventure Fracked launches this summer

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Grab your PS VR and Move controllers! A true, trailblazing made-for-VR action adventure is coming this summer! Fracked seamlessly combines fast paced, 1:1 run and cover gunplay with exhilarating free running, skiing and climbing that has never been seen before on VR.

You can check out the teaser trailer here:

PS VR action-adventure Fracked launches this summer

I love gaming and I love VR – it has so much potential especially for us gamers.  Since I started working in VR many years ago I’ve longed for a proper action adventure that includes the gameplay depth and freedom of traditional games with the immersion and control you only get in VR. I don’t just want to play games and watch movies on a TV when I can literally be the hero in my very own VR action movie. I’m also frustrated by the limitations of on-rails and stationary experiences – we’ve moved beyond this. So, with Fracked we set out to create a VR game from the ground up that does all this, seamlessly combining combat and free traversal gameplay in a single experience, just like transitioning between on-foot and driving when getting in and out of cars in an action game.

In Fracked, we’ve cast the player as a hero thrown into the fight. Stuck deep inside a mountain fracking facility the region has been taken over by an army of gun-wielding, interdimensional maniacs known as (you guessed it) the Fracked! As the last hope for the world, you must take them down before it is all too late… We’re not going for subtlety here – it is bold, brash and uncompromising in its vision.

And so is the gameplay – it is fast, exhilarating, and accessible.  Skiing, running, climbing, base jumping and ziplining are all possible and all happen seamlessly and fluidly. No on-rails gameplay and cinematic cutscenes here, everything is 1:1 and driven by the player’s controls, movements, and actions. Combat is unconstrained too, combining free movement for outflanking foes with 1:1 grabbable cover and tactile weapon reloading. What we’ve shown so far is just scratching the surface – we can’t wait to show the breadth and variety of the game in the coming months.

Here are a few other nuggets about the game I’d like to share:

    • This is unashamedly a true VR game only possible with PS Move controllers! Climbing, ziplining, reloading and in-world interactions are all driven 1:1 by the player’s hands. We couldn’t do this using a traditional gamepad.
    • Skiing requires you to physically lean to steer and control. As with the rest of the game it is integrated with the combat – we’ll be showing this in the weeks ahead.
    • We have nicknamed the combat “run and cover” gunplay because it mashes run and gun action with an innovative 1:1 grabbable cover system to create an all-new VR-only combat style. Not only does it play differently to what you’ve experienced before, it feels different too.
    • To maximise VR’s 360˚ potential and our free movement vision we have designed arena style combat encounters that double down on verticality.
    • Whilst we have aimed for a new, stylish take on classic action cinema – think a 2021 version of Die Hard or Cliffhanger – below the surface there is a Robocop-style cutting-edge satire about corporate greed and the climate change emergency. If Paul Verhoeven made a VR game (which would be AMAZING), we don’t think it would be a million miles away from Fracked!
    • The game is getting PS5 enhancements! Those playing on PS5 can expect improved framerates, loading times and resolution. For those playing on PS4 and PS4 Pro, never fear, it looks incredible and plays the same.
    • We can assure you that it is a complete coincidence that the name sounds a lot like a popular/unpopular profanity.

We can’t wait for everyone to get their hands on it. Fracked will be launching this summer exclusively on PS VR. In the meantime, we’d love to hear what you think!  Let us know in the comments below.

  • Das PS VR-Adventure Fracked sorgt noch dieses Jahr für Action

Das PS VR-Adventure Fracked sorgt noch dieses Jahr für Action

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

  • Citrus blasting mayhem arrives to Viveport Arcades

Citrus blasting mayhem arrives to Viveport Arcades

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

Shooty Fruity released late in 2017 for the home HTC Vive headsets worldwide to critical and commercial acclaim.  Developed by nDreams, it features addictive multi-tasking shooter gameplay – a mash up of the likes of Space Pirate Trainer and Job Simulator but with an anarchic and juicy twist! Recently, nDreams brought their creation to VR arcades in an all new exclusive version. Here, the team take us through the creation purpose of this edition of the game.

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X3m8rLc4aFI?feature=oembed&wmode=opaque&w=730&h=411]

Here at nDreams, we have spent the past 12 months carefully watching the VR Arcade sector grow from strength to strength and fast become one of the key areas of the VR market. However, from our extensive conversations with leaders in the field, we knew that if we were to bring Shooty Fruity to the arcades we would need to take a fresh look at how to make it as suitable as possible for what is very different to home VR – from different audiences and player behavior, to logistical set up, staffing considerations and business model.

The original did the hard work…

The first thing that became apparent is how the core elements of the game fit perfectly with things integral to the success of an arcade VR title.

Firstly, Shooty Fruity has simple controls and intuitive actions, it’s addictive and fun with a real ‘just one more go’ feel… The simple shooting and scanning, along with a depth of mastery needed for shooting accuracy, multitasking, duel wielding and so on gives it a simple to learn yet hard to master feel, which is perfect for arcades.

Additionally, an engaging and accessible premise is really important if you want to target a much wider audience beyond the home consumer. The humorous supermarkets-meet-guns and gratuitous-yet-juicy violence balance nicely between what appeals to adults and kids.

Finally, the polished graphics, carefully balanced gunplay and a full games worth of guns, fruits and jobs gave us the breadth and production values that you see on many of the leading VR arcade titles.

Despite all the strengths of the game there were clear areas where Shooty Fruity could be refined for arcade environments.

How does that work for the arcade player?

From our conversations with partners, there were three elements that kept coming up that were essential to finding success in VR arcades:

    1. Simple and immediate ‘onboarding’ for new and returning players. The staff room of the home version of the game is great for long play sessions, but not if you’re paying by the minute – you want to get in and be playing as quickly as possible.
    2. Scalable play sessions – even a 10 minute game should be fun, rewarding and self-contained. While individual rounds in the original game can range from a couple of minutes up to 10-15 minutes, it was designed to be played in longer sessions.
    3. Keeping players coming back again and again – the gameplay naturally had the depth to do this, but what else could encourage it?

    So, what did we do?

We were confident there were design changes we could make that effectively addressed the above challenges, while retaining the strengths of the original title.  What resulted was an experience tailor-made for arcades with the following key additions:

    1. Simple instructions – onboarding takes less than 30 seconds and puts focus on the most important things – how to grab, how to shoot, what the objective is. No need for an attendee to set up, demonstrate or explain to the player!
    2. Branching arcade structure – across a roughly 10 minute play-through everyone plays three shifts with which ones you move onto being dictated by how you do. Getting your head around your first time in VR?  You’ll move onto more forgiving shifts.  A VR shooter pro on your 5th play-through? You’ll have the opportunity to play more complex and unforgiving levels.
    3. You want to play again and again – the branching structure isn’t the only reason to have that one more go, level challenges boost your high score and those high scores can be viewed in weekly, monthly and all time leaderboards, giving a reason to keep returning to try and top the boards.

Test, test and test some more

From feedback and data from our initial launch, we’re delighted with how this version has been received by partners and players. However, we see this as the first step along a long road for Shooty Fruity Arcade. The same feedback and data points to areas which can be expanded and refined over time to make an even more compelling experience for players to enjoy well into the future.

Shooty Fruity is available now in both arcade and home versions on Viveport and via Viveport Subscription.  For more details about the game and nDreams’ future titles be sure to check out their Twitter.
