The entire team at NetherRealm is thrilled to add The Joker as the latest guest fighter to join the Mortal Kombat 11 roster. The Clown Prince of Crime is definitely an easy fit and a welcomed addition to the Mortal Kombat universe. Although we’ve worked with The Joker character before, our designers and artists were unleashed to plumb the depths of his madness like never before. The result is the nastiest and most vicious version of The Joker that our studio has ever created.

There are many gameplay examples that showcase this dark portrayal, including The Joker’s Fatal Blow, where the infamous clown hammers his opponent to a bloody pulp with a cane, which is a nod to the beating of Jason Todd in the classic comic book storyline from Batman: A Death in the Family.

Of course, this homage to The Joker’s lore is just one of many. Mortal Kombat fans are big supporters of when we honor a character’s past so our creative team always tries to dig deep. There are cinematic events that reinterpret famous comic book panels, dialogue that pays tribute to The Joker’s most memorable speeches and moves and moments that recall his previous visit to the Mortal Kombat universe.

The Mortal Kombat 11 crossover with DC Comics doesn’t end there, however. Our studio had a lot of fun designing new skins that mashup characters from the two universes. It’s almost Halloween in January as Kitana plays the sleek Katwoman of Outworld, Baraka transforms into the reptilian Killer Croc and Geras is reborn as the Time Lord of Apokolips, a perfect nod to Darkseid. The creative team’s favorite character skin though has to be The Batman Who Laughs version of Noob Saibot as the menacing Darkest Knight. It’s really a perfect blend of the characters and a perfect fit for Mortal Kombat 11.
Don’t forget, The Joker DLC drops on January 28 as part of the early access period for Kombat Pack owners, followed by wide (à la carte) availability on February 4. Enjoy!

One of the many great things about working on NetherRealm games is the opportunity offered by DLC to add guest fighters to our titles. What’s more, these are usually iconic characters that I’ve grown up with and have had an impact on me as an artist.

The Terminator T-800 from the Terminator: Dark Fate film is such a great addition to Mortal Kombat 11. Everyone in the studio has so much love and respect for this character, and the amount of creative energy felt during the character creation process, along with everyone’s excitement during the final playthroughs, were incredible.

Although most of my work consists of reviewing and art directing assets for the character and prop teams, I also build character faces and facial rigs that drive our facial animations. As Arnold Schwarzenegger is arguably the most iconic action hero of all time, it was a real career highlight to work on his face and facial rig.

The team added a lot of new features, pushing everything to its technical limits to make all gameplay, intros, victories, Fatal Blows and Fatalities feel truly impressive. The character team worked hard to not only add new systems for all the Terminator dismemberment and Krushing Blow content but to also add new features enabling the addition of decal elements. These allowed us to give the Terminator several different shirt options.

We couldn’t do the Terminator without showing the T-800 endoskeleton. This is my favorite skin, the damage to the face and the revealed skull are just plain cool. In addition, the design team has really outdone themselves by adding a game mechanic that will have you fighting as the T-800 endoskeleton, if you have the right move equipped and you are at low health in the final round.

We also have additional character skins dropping with all this content, including Sonya Blade as a Cyborg Hunter, Kano as a cyborg in his Cash Machine Kano skin and Johnny Cage in a very expensive tuxedo, movie premiere-ready as Red Carpet Johnny Cage. These are great skins, especially the different tux color options for Johnny.

And we have a Cassie Cage as Harley Quinn character skin for Kombat Pack owners, which we’ve been looking forward to releasing. Not only is it a great visual, but it also adds some fun to Cassie’s costume options.

The opportunity to add Arnold Schwarzenegger as the Terminator T-800 to Mortal Kombat 11 has been nothing short of an amazing experience for everyone here at NetherRealm Studios, and it really shows off the huge amount of great creative content that has been added to the game. We hope you all feel the respect and love that we have for this brilliant character when the DLC drops on October 8 via early access for Kombat Pack owners and October 15 for wide (à la carte) availability.

And lastly, we have a Mortal Kombat 11 free trial coming up October 11-14 on PS4, where you’ll be able to preview all multiplayer game modes, a portion of the Story mode, the full base game roster of characters and some of the Kombat Pack fighters (Terminator T-800, Nightwolf and Shang Tsung) within the Towers of Time mode. For Mortal Kombat 11, I oversaw character concepts and character model creation. There are a lot of great character skins in MK11, and here are a few that are not only visually awesome, but also stood out as memorable moments during the development of MK11.

Erron Black

One of the primary objectives for the MK11 visual design of characters was to ensure that the characters are easier to read during gameplay. To achieve this, we used bold confident shapes and rich color. In Erron Black’s case, we added clean, flat colored armor plates to his arms and legs. Adding these made his punches and kicks easier to read during kombat.

One of Erron Black’s concepts had a mask, which reminded me of an iconic Australian outlaw name Ned Kelly. This is how I got the idea of making a fully armored Ned Kelly skin for Erron Black. The quality of the final model and the fact that the Ned Kelly theme ties back to the stories from my childhood in Australia, make this skin one of my favorites.

Shao Kahn

Our goal was to have past and present versions of all characters. However, this did not work for Shao Kahn as he was meant to be dead in the present time. To solve this, we made a far past version of him. The idea was to make a version of Shao Kahn that would capture the way he looked when he was leading armies into battle. The concept turned out great, however, the execution of the model was not so easy and it took several artists to get it to this final quality. Not only does Shao Kahn have some of my favorite skins in the game, he has great gear as well. The helmets are especially awesome; one of my favorites can be seen here. Raiden

It’s hard to choose my favorite look for Raiden as I think they all look great. However, this skin is a combination of a number of creative ideas, seized opportunities and amazing technology. While building characters for MK11, we always look for the opportunity to create retro looks from earlier MK games. This Raiden’s skin is his MK2 look which, however, is presented here with one of the many different color schemes available in MK11.

In addition to that, the skin showcases the silk material which is one of several new material shading models we added in MK11. Fans of NetherRealm games may notice that we have used the same facial talent for Raiden in MK11 as we did for injustice 2. However, to achieve higher fidelity we wanted for MK11, the person was rescanned and Raiden’s face was completely rebuilt.

Cetrion

This is the dark side of the Mother Earth theme for Cetrion. This dark Cetrion skin contrasts with her lighter ones, showing the dual role mother nature must play to ensure balance. It was hard to design a skin that would embody the destructive side of mother nature but would not come across as evil. Achieving this made this one of my favorite character skins in the game. We are excited for the player to see all the skins for each character as they are designed to work together to tell the player more about the character.
