From Fur to Fury: The Legacy of Diablo’s Druid Class

    Summary

    •  The new Druid class comes to Diablo Immortal on July 3.
    • With changes in every iteration, the Druid always brings a blend of feral instincts, nature-based magic, and stoic survivalism.
    • Take a deeper look at the Druid class throughout the ages of Diablo and see how it has evolved.

Picture this: you’re standing in the heart of a storm, lightning crackling in the sky, the ground trembling as if the earth itself feels your rage. Around you, wolves snarl and bears roar, ready to strike at your command. This is the primal power of the Druid, first introduced in Diablo II, making a triumphant return in Diablo IV, and soon to have their debut in Diablo Immortal on July 3.

Druidsrepresent a fascinating blend of feral instincts, nature-based magic, and stoic survivalism. Let’s dive into the evolution of this iconic playable class.

    Origins of the Druid

In Diablo lore, the Druids are a reserved and reflective people, deeply connected to nature and its primal forces. Though they share a historical link with the Barbarians, Druids follow their own path. Where Barbarians celebrate raw, unshackled might, Druids harness nature’s power with precision and balance. Picture them as the calm before the storm—until they morph into a bear and decimate their foes, that is.

The Druid design pulls heavily from European (Celtic and German) myths and folklore, particularly the idea of shamans and natural spellcasters who draw power from the earth. However, the Diablo universe evolves these archetypes into something uniquely suited to its grim world, drawing a look and feel from the raw, primal essence of Sanctuary’s harsh wilderness, blending ferocity and mysticism in equal measure.

    The Druid’s Skill Set

The Druid class skill kit offers a mix of nature-based elemental magic, shapeshifting abilities, and summoning loyal animal companions to aid in battle. Here’s what makes them a force to be reckoned with:

    Elemental Magic

Druids wield the raw power of nature through earth-shattering spells, crackling lightning attacks, and poison damage. These abilities represent the destructive beauty of natural forces.

    Summoning Companions

Choose from loyal wolves, towering bears, or ravenous vines, depending on the playstyle you favor. Your summons not only fight at your side but can be pivotal for drawing aggro or dealing critical damage.

    Shapeshifting

Need even more power? Transform into a hulking Werebear for devastating melee attacks or a nimble Werewolf for swift strikes. This dynamic shapeshifting adds a visceral touch and lets you unleash your unique adventuring style.

    The Druid’s Evolution

The Druid class has come a long way since its Diablo II debut. Each iteration refines the fantasy, addressing gameplay mechanics while holding onto the Druid’s core identity.

    Diablo II (2000)

The Druid made an unforgettable debut, combining shapeshifting abilities with elemental magic to create a class deeply attuned to the forces of nature. Players could transform into a ferocious werewolf or a sturdy werebear, each offering unique tactical advantages that catered to different playstyles.

Elemental abilities provided additional versatility, allowing Druids to unleash the devastating power of storms and flames. Armed with primal weapons like axes, clubs, and special polearms, the Druid’s combat style resonated with its connection to the natural world.

Narratively, the Druid stood apart from other classes, with their isolation adding an air of mystique to enhance their lore.

    Diablo IV (2023)

The Druid emerges as a class rich with dynamic possibilities. Earth and storm spells now deliver visually striking abilities, including summoning earthquakes to disrupt foes or unleashing lightning storms for devastating long-range attacks. Players can seamlessly transition between human, werewolf, and werebear forms during combat, and for further customization, specific items enable them to adopt their preferred form as a default, opening hybrid strategies like a resilient, earth-powered werebear or an agile, storm-infused werewolf.

Adding to the versatility, Totems return as specialized off-hand items, enriching the Druid’s arsenal with tailored bonuses that complement their iconic staves, axes, and clubs. These tools allow for builds that ensure a personalized experience. The Druid’s lore gains depth in their role as guardians of the wild and their command over nature’s elements.

    Diablo Immortal (2022):

The Druid’s entry as the 9th playable class channels an untamed, primal energy, embracing a neolithic essence that stands apart even from the Scosglen Druids of Diablo IV. This version is wild and reckless, wielding the raw forces of nature with ferocity rather than control. Characterized as a hermit with a quirky and enigmatic personality, the Sharval Druid thrives in isolation, adding an unpredictable melee/summoner hybrid charm to the battlefield.

With Wild Magic at their command, their focused skillset and adaptability make them a versatile and fearsome force, while their eccentric, hermitic persona brings an air of mystique to the fast-paced mobile world of Diablo Immortal. Whether shaping the battlefield with elemental fury or summoning swarms of loyal creatures, this Druid iteration offers a uniquely feral experience.

    Join the Pack

Balancing nostalgia with innovation, the Druid has maintained its identity while adapting its skills to fit the evolving mechanics of the Diablo universe.

The Druid’s fantasy is timeless. Whether you’re commanding the forces of nature, shapeshifting into feral beasts, or summoning animal allies, the class provides an immersive and customizable experience. There’s nothing quite like the feeling of smashing your enemies as a Werebear, followed by unleashing a storm of ravens to clear the battlefield. It’s gameplay that walks the line between serenity and ferocity.

    3. Secure payments and purchase verification

Google Play’s billing system ensures you can safely purchase digital products and subscriptions. Your payment information stays between you and Google — it’s securely stored and isn’t shared with app developers. For an extra level of security, you can also require purchase verification, providing authentication with password or biometrics any time that you make a purchase on Google Play.

    4. Trusted tools for kids and families

We partner with app businesses and parents to help keep kids and teens safe online while empowering families. If children are the target audience for an app, there are additional Play requirements that the app must meet concerning its content and handling of personal information. And, with our parental controls, parents can choose to restrict age-inappropriate experiences and content from being downloaded or purchased.

    5. Control over your Play data

You have transparency and control when it comes to what Play data is used to shape your store results and recommendations. For example, you can tell Play not to use data associated with a particular app for personalization within the Play store.

And Google TV can also help you catch up with recaps and highlights whenever you want. You can also check out a ton of live women’s sports programming on the For You page — from National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) live matches in the U.S. to Liga MX Femenil live matches in Mexico — available free with ads. Plus, keep an eye out for free WNBA games on the ION FAST channel when the season tips off later this year.

Here are five additional ways we are celebrating International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month:

    1. Today’s Google Doodle celebrates International Women’s Day by highlighting historic breakthroughs and inventions by women in science, technology, engineering, and math.
    2. Google Play has launched its Women’s History Month Hub that features curated collections of apps, games, and books that celebrate women and inspire growth.

  • Google’s legislative proposal for keeping kids safe onlineGoogle’s legislative proposal for keeping kids safe onlineDirector

Google’s legislative proposal for keeping kids safe onlineGoogle’s legislative proposal for keeping kids safe onlineDirector

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Everyone wants to protect kids and teens online, and make sure they engage with age-appropriate content, but how it’s done matters. There are a variety of fast-moving legislative proposals being pushed by Meta and other companies in an effort to offload their own responsibilities to keep kids safe to app stores. These proposals introduce new risks to the privacy of minors, without actually addressing the harms that are inspiring lawmakers to act. Google is proposing a more comprehensive legislative framework that shares responsibility between app stores and developers, and protects children’s privacy and the decision rights of parents.

Where current legislative proposals fall short

One example of concerning legislation is Utah’s App Store Accountability Act. The bill requires app stores to share if a user is a kid or teenager with all app developers (effectively millions of individual companies) without parental consent or rules on how the information is used. That raises real privacy and safety risks, like the potential for bad actors to sell the data or use it for other nefarious purposes.

This level of data sharing isn’t necessary — a weather app doesn’t need to know if a user is a kid. By contrast, a social media app does need to make significant decisions about age-appropriate content and features. As written, however, the bill helps social media companies avoid that responsibility despite the fact that apps are just one of many ways that kids can access these platforms. And by requiring app stores to obtain parental consent for every single app download, it dictates how parents supervise their kids and potentially cuts teens off from digital services like educational or navigation apps.

A legislative framework that better protects kids

By contrast, we are focused on solutions that require appropriate user consent and minimize data exposure. Our legislative framework, which we’ll share with lawmakers as we continue to engage on this issue, has app stores securely provide industry standard age assurances only to developers who actually need them — and ensures that information is used responsibly. Here are more details:

    • Privacy-preserving age signal shared only with consent: Some legislation, including the Utah bill, require app stores to send age information to all developers without permission from the user or their parents. In our proposal, only developers who create apps that may be risky for minors would request industry standard age signals from app stores, and the information is only shared with permission from a user (or their parent). By just sharing with developers who need the information to deliver age-appropriate experiences, and only sharing the minimum amount of data needed to provide an age signal, it reduces the risk of sensitive information being shared broadly.
    • Appropriate safety measures within apps: Under our proposal, an age signal helps a developer understand whether a user is an adult or a minor — the developer is then responsible for applying the appropriate safety and privacy protections. For example, an app developer might filter out certain types of content, introduce take a break reminders, or offer different privacy settings when they know a user might be a minor. Because developers know their apps best, they are best positioned to determine when and where an age-gate might be beneficial to their users, and that may evolve over time, which is another reason why a one-size-fits-all approach won’t adequately protect kids.
    • Responsible use of age signals: Some legislative proposals create new child safety risks because they establish no guardrails against developers misusing an age signal. Our proposal helps to ensure that any age signals are used responsibly, with clear consequences for developers who violate users’ trust. For example, it protects against a developer improperly accessing or sharing the age signal.
    • No ads personalization to minors: Alongside any age assurance proposal, we support banning personalized advertisements targeting users under 18 as an industry standard. At Google, this is a practice we’ve long disallowed. It’s time for other companies to follow suit.
    • Centralized parental controls: Recognizing that parents sometimes feel overwhelmed by parental controls across different apps, our proposal would provide for a centralized dashboard for parents to manage their children’s online activities across different apps in one place and for developers to easily integrate with.

Google has demonstrated our commitment to doing our part to keep kids safe online. We’re ready to build on this work and will continue engaging with lawmakers and developers on how to move this legislative framework for age assurance forward.

Wie Candy Crush Solitaire einem Klassiker neues Leben einhaucht

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mt_w50yqqAg?feature=oembed&w=500&h=281]

Candy Crush Saga is among the most popular games of the modern age. With hundreds of millions of players, it’s a game that combines relaxation with a compelling “just one more go” approach. You could say much the same thing about casual gaming classic, Microsoft Solitaire, the game that introduced many of us to the beloved solo card game when it was included on Windows PCs from 1990.

Perhaps it’s no wonder, then, that today sees the release of Candy Crush Solitaire for iOS and Android devices – it’s a combination of Candy Crush’s vibrant looks and beloved mechanics with Solitaire’s enduring appeal.

“We saw an opportunity to bring together two timeless gaming experiences, Candy Crush Saga and Solitaire, both of which offer a satisfying balance of relaxation and challenge,” King Executive Producer Marta Cortinas tells me. “Extensive research and player testing showed strong demand for a product that combines strategic card play with engaging visuals and creative mechanics. The goal was to create a fresh, immersive experience that retains the strategic depth of Solitaire while incorporating the vibrant and rewarding gameplay that Candy Crush Saga is known for. The first step was identifying the right type of solitaire gameplay that would best align with the Candy Crush experience.”

Unlike the suit-matching solitaire you might be familiar with – known as Klondike – a key change here is that Candy Crush Solitaire bases itself on another variant, known as TriPeaks.

“TriPeaks Solitaire differs from Klondike in that it focuses more on clearing a board by playing cards in ascending or descending order, rather than building suits,” explains Cortinas. “This means players can focus on making strategic decisions without being restricted by suit or color. It was the right choice for Candy Crush Solitaire because it allows for a faster-paced, more intuitive gameplay experience that aligns with the rewarding, pick-up-and-play nature of the Candy Crush franchise.

“Its mechanics provide a great blend of strategy and progression, similar to how players advance in Candy Crush levels. From there, we layered in the signature Candy Crush Saga elements, colorful boosters, engaging progression, and collectible rewards, ensuring that players would recognize the familiar sense of accomplishment and fun from our franchise.”

For Candy Crush players, those elements will be immediately familiar. The Color Bomb and Lollipop Hammer boosters from Saga make appearances here to help you along, obstacles in your game will (of course) be candy-themed, and Candy Crush characters will make appearances along the way, taking you on an adventure outside of the Candy Kingdom for the first time.

Which brings us to another big change to Solitaire – progression. The original card game tends to be built for standalone rounds but, in classic Candy Crush style, each round of Candy Crush Solitaire is now part of a series of escalating levels.

“Progression in Candy Crush Solitaire is designed to feel just as rewarding as in other Candy Crush games,” says Cortinas. “Players advance by completing levels and unlocking postcards from various locations around the world, adding a collectible element to the game. Additionally, we’ve introduced the ‘Hold Slot’ mechanic, which allows players to strategically set aside a card for later use, adding another layer of progression and planning. We have the same plan for Candy Crush Solitaire – as with our other live games – of adding new levels each week to help our players keep progressing through the game and always refining and tweaking those levels, to ensure we are hitting expectations when it comes to delivering the best quality content for our players.”

The team at King is committed not only to adding new levels, but tweaking the game based on player feedback, introducing new gameplay mechanics, and keeping things moving with seasonal events, challenges, and rewards. Solitaire might be a static game, but Candy Crush Solitaire certainly won’t be.

As the first new Candy Crush game since 2018, it’s clearly something King is very proud of, and excited to release. I ask why this game was chosen to continue the franchise’s lineage:

“We only launch a new game when we believe we have something truly special to offer,” enthuses Cortinas. “Our business is built on testing and learning, to ensure the experience we’re giving our players is the best we can deliver. The Solitaire genre has been growing, and our research showed strong interest from both Candy Crush players and Solitaire fans in a game that merges the best of both worlds. After extensive testing and refinement, we saw that Candy Crush Solitaire had the potential to be a meaningful and engaging addition to the franchise.”

It’s all the more special that King is now a part of Microsoft, home of the version of Solitaire many played for the very first time. In some ways, this game is the continuation of two gaming lineages.

Candy Crush Solitaire is available today for iOS and Android devices.
