How Forspoken’s combat works, and why it looks so magical

    Reading Time: 5 minutes

Hello everyone, my name is Ryota Nozoe, Lead Visual Effects Artist on Forspoken.

This expansive new action RPG puts you in control of Frey Holland, a young woman who is transported to the mysterious world of Athia! This land may be beautiful, but it’s dangerous too – a phenomenon called ‘the Break’ has corrupted the people and creatures… and turned them into hideous monsters.

Fortunately, Frey is able to call upon a wide range of magic spells to defend herself, from harnessing the elements to manipulating nature itself. You can get a close look at the exciting combat in our latest deep-dive video:

How Forspoken’s combat works, and why it looks so magical

As you can see, magic is varied and visually spectacular! Read on, and I’ll tell you a little about how we achieved it:

Defining the ‘look’ of Forspoken’s magic

We put a great deal of time and thought into how we visualise the spells in Forspoken.

First and foremost, we wanted to stay away from having things like fire or rocks just suddenly appearing out of nowhere. While that certainly would have been fine, and wouldn’t have caused any issues, doing that felt too expected and boring – especially for a game so focused on magic.

We decided that every spell would share a common rule – it would start with magic energy, and transition into natural phenomena like the afore-mentioned fire and rocks. Then, when the spell is cast, it would revert back to magic energy before fading away.

We also wanted to stay away from using auras or summoning circles when Frey was using spells – this would lack originality. Early in development, we decided that magic energy in Forspoken would be represented by geometric patterns.

This informed the visual design of all of the game’s magic, and ensured we kept a consistent visual style throughout the game.

Each spell in the game was the result of a team of visual artists, game designers and programmers all working very closely together. To give you an example of this, here are three spells you can use in the game – and what went into bringing them to life!

    Burst Shot

Burst shot fires explosive lumps of rock that deal area damage.

It’s an explosive earth-based spell that deals area damage, so we thought it would feel appropriate and magic-like to conjure a large rock that quickly protrudes in four directions.

This is the first spell that Frey gets – and the first one we worked on – so we made sure it was pretty straightforward!

Because Burst Shot was the first spell we took to completion, it became a guideline for all the magic in Forspoken. While we were making it, we used it to perfect the common rule of geometric patterns turning into rocks and turning back into geometric patterns before disappearing.

So, while it may not be the most visually impressive spell, it’s certainly special as it served as the departure point for all the others in the game!

    Cataract

Cataract spins up a watery vortex that sucks in enemies, damaging them as it does so. If you hold the button, you can send out pillars of water out to attack enemies, and if you hold it even longer, you can send out more pillars of icy water to freeze foes solid!

During development, we came up with the idea of having streams of water converge and cause a big icy explosion. We challenged ourselves to visually express how water changes into ice – only if we could achieve that, would the spell be complete.

Of course, that was easier said than done! For example, this is a spell that has different levels – at level two it’s only an explosion of water, and at level three, the explosion of water turns to ice. Getting that explosion of water and freezing it was extremely difficult – we essentially had to develop it as two separate spells, which meant double the work!

It’s worth it though, because we were able to find a way to express that concept of water turning into ice. We were also very particular when it came to developing the shaders we used for these substances – I think Cataract is one of those spells that looks beautiful, even at a quick glance.

    Genesis

Genesis summons barbed branches, which fire out in front of you and skewer foes over a wide area. If you hold the button, it hits harder and over an even area, and if you hold the buttons even longer, it also strikes and poisons your enemies!

The ‘genesis’ of this spell actually came from one that we were experimenting with during the early stages of development. Very early on, we decided that Frey would be able to manipulate nature, and I thought it would be fitting and visually impactful if she could conjure a large tree from the ground!

The original design saw the tree grow and attack enemies, but as we got further along in development, we reworked the design to better match the game’s systems.

We were testing this spell even while we were still in pre-production. It’s a pretty extravagant concept – a tree grows from the ground and flowers would bloom, then an even larger tree impales everything in sight!

It took an enormous amount of trial and error to show plants being created at such a scale. Showing trees growing from the ground was especially challenging. We tested a lot of different methods, and we had to start over many times.

Then, once we thought we had completed it, it became a spell with multiple levels, so then we had to figure out how to differentiate levels 1-3, which was quite trying!

I’m delighted with how it turned out though – I think we were able to achieve something wonderful!

    ____________________________________________________________________________

As you can tell, we’ve worked incredibly hard to make the combat in Forspoken look good – and also feel good to play. We can’t wait for you to see all the amazing spells we’ve created – but you’ll have to wait until the game is out for that!

Worlds collide in Forspoken, as Frey explores a land filled with corrupted creatures

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

With Forspoken launching October 11 on PS5, we’re excited to reveal the new Worlds Collide trailer! Forspoken tells the story of a young New Yorker suddenly thrust into the magical, yet cruel land of Athia. Frey tries to come to terms with her new reality as she explores and traverses around the magnificent open world of Athia where corrupted enemies seem to be lurking everywhere she goes.

Worlds collide in Forspoken, as Frey explores a land filled with corrupted creatures

But with time, Frey is no longer a lost New Yorker. She becomes a confident hero who becomes stronger with the trials she faces and develops her magical abilities against a host of enemies. Frey uses her Burst Shot, fires off electricity with Storm Dart and even commands a barrier of water with her Eagre ability.

Forspoken will take players on an adrenaline-fueled journey as they go head-to-head with fearsome creatures, including Gigas, the giant ogre, the flying Apsarivis, plus many more deadly but insanely beautiful enemies.

Finally, we hope you enjoyed the sneak peek of the battle against the Dragon. You may have seen this formidable foe teased in our past trailers, and we’re excited to reveal more of this thrilling confrontation that requires Frey to combine her magical combat and parkour abilities to stay alive as she’s blasted with fire and pounded with brute-force attacks. How will Frey escape the clutches of this epic beast? You will have to play the game October 11 to find out.

I’m also excited to share a brand-new piece of key art showing Frey in mid-action and surrounded by magic particles as she emerges from an ominous fog (see top of article). This art will be featured on the final packaging of the physical edition of the game.

With so much love that we poured into the design, we hope you like it!

  • A closer look at Forspoken’s major villains – the Tantas

A closer look at Forspoken’s major villains – the Tantas

    Reading Time: 6 minutes

In Forspoken, Frey—a modern young woman from New York City—is magically transported to Athia, a once beautiful and peaceful land that has been beset by a corrupting force known as the Break. No one, aside from Frey, strangely enough, is safe from the corruption, which transforms whatever it touches into a twisted, and often bloodthirsty, facsimile of itself.

We’ve shown how the Break affects the animals and creatures of Athia in our previous trailers, and there’s no doubt that Frey has her work cut out for her when it comes to taking them on. Today, however, I wanted to dive deeper into the true big bads that stand in Frey’s way: the Tantas.

A closer look at Forspoken’s major villains – the Tantas

The Tantas are the former rulers of Athia. Each embodies a different virtue and possesses a unique strength. They were once beloved by the people of Athia, who enjoyed lives of plenty under their guidance. However, without warning, the former protectors mysteriously became oppressors, becoming aggressive and hateful. As the most powerful sorceresses in Athia, they pose a dangerous threat to Frey.

Being who she is, when Frey first arrives in Athia, she has very little interest in the Tantas. But after being accused of trespassing on her territory by Tanta Sila, Frey becomes an enemy in their eyes. Unfortunately for Frey, there’s no going back home to New York without defeating them first.

We’re excited to unveil the second and very wicked Tanta who stands in Frey’s way: Tanta Prav. Played by The Walking Dead’s Pollyanna McIntosh, you can see Tanta Prav in action in the latest trailer for Forspoken, which premiered at The Game Awards earlier tonight.

Nailing the design concept of the Tantas was key to establishing Forspoken’s entire look, feel, and tone. The art director on Forspoken, Yuuki Matsuzawa, played a critical role in conceiving the concept of the Tantas at the beginning of the project, which has remained consistent throughout development. The Tantas were a central theme of the game, so it’s not a stretch to say that all the art in Forspoken was designed around them—their virtues and their corruption, their beautiful, yet terrifying, appearances.

    Concept art for Tanta Sila

Tanta Sila is the “Tanta of Strength” who once commanded Athian troops to protect the land from outside threats. She fought on the front line, displaying unparalleled prowess in battle, and was revered by the people for it. But, unfortunately, she has now become a cruel despot who trusts nothing but her own skill in battle, mercilessly eliminating any and all who offend her.

We have an amazing team of designers at Luminous Productions who worked on each of the Tantas. The color choice for each Tanta was important, too, as we wanted this to signify the corruption of the virtue that each Tanta represents. For example, for Tanta Sila, who represents the virtue of strength, Matsuzawa envisioned her dress flailing as she loses herself in battle, so we went with a flamenco dancer-esque dress and an aggressive red color thematically.

While Tanta Sila faces her enemies (Frey included) with brute force, our newly unveiled Tanta Prav takes a decidedly different approach. Being the “Tanta of Justice” who administered Athia’s judicial system before the Break, she judged right from wrong with her uncanny ability to perceive untruths and brought order and peace to Athian society. Now she is a callous executioner with a warped sense of justice, trusting only in her own judgment.

Matsuzawa also added, the team envisioned her as being unyielding in her own suppression, so she was given a restraint-like outfit that is a resolute blue. Despite Tanta Sila and Tanta Prav’s different looks, it was important to the art team that both Tantas sport dresses with unique lines and elegant decorations that are more modern than traditional medieval European attire, bringing in that mix of modern and fantasy elements that run throughout the entire game. Gold ornamentation is present in both Tantas’ costumes, which represents their magical properties. Because they’re two major boss characters, their very essences and virtues are also woven deep in their actions and the types of magic they use.

Early concept art for Tanta Prav

Bringing the Tantas to life, from concept art to full 3D models, was no small task, and the art team shepherded each design through three major evolutions. The first when the scan models for each character had been selected, as this informed what each Tanta would look like, and the team adjusted the designs to match the models accordingly. The following stage was the completion of the physical production of each Tanta’s outfit. This might seem a bit extreme, but Matsuzawa and the art team wanted the distinct construction of their dresses to feel as real as possible, so they made them in real life, and 3D scanned them.

The final evolution took place when the performance actors brought the characters to life—Janina Gavankar portraying Tanta Sila and Pollyanna McIntosh portraying Tanta Prav. Both actors articulately portrayed the Tantas’ virtues and corruption envisioned by the team, solidifying them not just as characters but as individuals.

Although both Tantas are powerful sorceresses with a certain amount of gravitas, our Cinematic Director, Toshiyuki Momose, was careful to present them as ordinary people with semi-ordinary concerns (such as Frey’s alleged trespassing) and not make them out to be godlike beings. On the animation side of things, Animator Kiyoka Hatakeyama kept in mind that as the battles in Forspoken are all about magic and don’t rely on weaponry whatsoever, it was important to keep the movements of the Tantas’ hands and arms graceful to clearly convey their strength, beauty, and corruption. For Tanta Prav, she found figure skating to be a huge source of inspiration for creating her animations.

The progression of Tanta Prav’s visual development, from early CG concept art to the final product

The Tantas were a true labor of love for us at Luminous Productions. Believe me when I say that the team here is just as excited to see them fully voiced and animated as we hope viewers at home are, who are seeing them for the first time. We’re all also incredibly excited that the time for folks around the world to face off against the Tantas themselves is quickly drawing near.

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

When we first announced Project Athia last year, we were overwhelmed with joy from seeing the excitement and conversations shared by fans online. Now, at long last, we’re ready to share the game’s official title and logo with you:

I’m also excited to share a brand-new scene from the game, which you can view here:

Forspoken comes to PS5 in 2022

Forspoken is an action RPG where you will take on the role of Frey Holland, an ordinary young woman who must harness her magical abilities to survive in a fantastical and dangerous land called Athia. As Frey, you will embark on a thrilling, other-worldly adventure and face treacherous trials to unravel the mystery behind the unknown land of Athia and awaken something much more from within.

As you’ll see in the new game clip, Frey is able to traverse the world with incredible speed and fluidity. I can’t wait for players to experience firsthand just how satisfying it feels to move through Athia, scaling cliffs, and leaping across ravines in the future.

Frey takes center stage in Forspoken, and we’re delighted to announce that actor, Ella Balinska is performing the character. We were looking for someone who could convincingly portray Frey’s dynamic character, and we knew immediately that Ella was the perfect person to play her. From the beginning, Ella understood the themes and concept of the game and was able to channel this in her performance to bring Frey’s character to life. Not only is Ella talented and well matched to the role of Frey, but she is also extremely passionate about Forspoken as her first video game project.

And there it is! On behalf of Square Enix and the entire Luminous Productions team, we hope you enjoyed the sneak peek. The creators are working hard around the world on the development of Forspoken, and we can’t wait for you to experience Frey’s story in 2022.
