Embark on an Expedition in Path of Exile’s latest expansion, out today

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

Oh, yes! An Expedition awaits. What a joyous time to embark on an adventure, detonate explosives, and fight off hordes of undead Kalguur. To what end, you ask? Riches, glory, and power. Of course. Path of Exile’s latest expansion can be played today and includes all the hallmarks of the best games in the action RPG genre – powerful items, intense combat and, of course, terrifying, everpresent death.

In Expedition, you’ll assist Kalguuran traders in their efforts to recover the artifacts lost by their ancestors. Unable to fight the dangers of Wraeclast alone, they enlist your violent services to clear out their Expedition sites so that they may plunder the treasures buried below. You must strategically lay a series of explosives, detonate them, and then cull the deadly horde that rises from the earth. If you can manage this, ancient Kalguuran artifacts will be yours for the taking. Each of the Kalguuran traders provides a unique style of trade, offering the opportunity to deal, barter or gamble the artifacts in exchange for their tempting wares.

You may also discover Logbooks which chronicle the whereabouts of many hidden treasures from their past. These Logbooks can be crafted to maximise their danger and level of rewards. Take them to Dannig, the Kalguuran leader, and he’ll give passage to these far-off locations. These sprawling Expedition sites expose an unfathomable horde of monsters once unearthed. These areas can also contain secret passages which lead to exotic treasures and formidable bosses.

In addition to the tempting lure of hidden treasure in the Expedition League, you’ll also uncover 19 new ways to build your character. Path of Exile is all about customising your gameplay to your heart’s desire and one of the fundamental building blocks of doing so is through skill and support gems. In this expansion, we wanted to really shake up Path of Exile’s metagame by providing a swathe of new options for character building. As such, we designed 19 new gems that are each themed around our Ascendancy Classes.

One of our favourite gems from this lineup is the new Summon Reaper skill, it was designed for Necromancers and summons a powerful minion which performs powerful attacks that cause enemies to bleed, can be commanded to attack specific locations, and literally feeds off of your other minions. There’s also the Spectral Helix gem which was designed for the Ascendant. It throws out a ghostly copy of your weapon which spirals outward from your location, harming any enemies it passes through.

As an extension of our desire to shake up Path of Exile’s metagame, we’ve also made some massive balance changes. Expedition is Path of Exile’s 30th expansion since its Closed Beta, and because every expansion introduces powerful new options for character building, players are now more powerful than ever. The balance changes in Expedition will help to restore the challenge that Path of Exile is known for. We’ve also reworked our flask system to encourage more thoughtful, interactive gameplay and provide interesting new ways for players to mitigate incoming damage.

If you haven’t played before, if it’s been a while since you have, or you’re a regular pro, now is the perfect time to play Path of Exile. Not only is it free to play but right now the entire community is taking up the challenge of finding the new best gameplay strategies and you can be right there with them. In a game where knowledge is power, having a shakeup of this scale really levels the playing field. Each expansion introduces a fresh economy and competitive ladder for you to make your mark in. You can also complete challenges in exchange for exclusive cosmetic rewards! Did we mention it’s free? (No, really – no demo version, no pay to win. Just cosmetics, if you want.)

If you find yourself absorbed in the world of Wraeclast, you’ll be happy to know that we put out expansions every thirteen weeks. We hope to see you there.

    Reading Time: 5 minutes

Jawohl!

  • Inside the Insanity of Path of Exile’s “Delirium” Update, Out Today on PS4

Inside the Insanity of Path of Exile’s “Delirium” Update, Out Today on PS4

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

Hey guys! Nick here, a game designer from Grinding Gear Games. We’ve just launched Delirium, our latest expansion and challenge league for Path of Exile. In the Delirium challenge league, players encounter shimmering illusions throughout the world which, when approached, release a rush of flowing mist. The mist moves outwards, and if you can keep up with it, you’ll face horrifying new foes that drop rich rewards when bested.

My job at Grinding Gear is often to take a set of game mechanics and rewards and find a story or theme that will unify them. Delirium has been one of the most interesting projects to work on, because the theme — inexorable, creeping madness — opens up a lot of possibilities.

We’ve touched on madness a few times throughout Path of Exile’s history. Characters like Niko the Mad (if the name didn’t give it away) and the antagonists in the Atlas of Worlds have displayed varying degrees of paranoia and delusion. Items like the sword Innsbury Edge play with the player’s perception of the game world by causing unusual behavior to occur (such as your character keeling over dead from seemingly nothing, only to suddenly spring back up… yet leaving your corpse on the ground at the same time!). But we’ve never tackled madness on this broad a scale, and so intimately tied to the player’s behavior. We’ve also never really used madness as part of actual gameplay. Usually, it’s just a little bit of flavor. We needed to ensure that a league centred on madness set itself apart.

So for Delirium, we approached this theme in a few ways:

    The Fog

As a visual representation of the effects of Delirium, the flowing fog simply looks fantastic. It makes the world feel like it’s shifting, and obscures the ground just enough that you might not be sure if you just saw that giant, glaring eyeball emerging from the dirt or not.

    The Monsters

Besides new monsters springing up while you travel through the fog, the monsters that were already there may behave… differently. And by ‘differently’, I mean they may tear themselves in half and have a terrifying entity emerge and attack you, before retreating back into the original monster’s body. Or maybe you just imagined it.

    The Sound

Early on, you’ll hear whispers and phrases as you approach and activate the Delirium mechanic. It’s quite unsettling. But not nearly as unsettling as what you’ll hear later, when the Delirium begins to really manifest itself. You may start hearing voices. And what those voices say won’t always be helpful… or true. It’s up to you, the player, to determine what is real, what is madness, and what is caught in between.

    The Rewards

Path of Exile’s passive tree is notorious for its size and complexity. Several years ago we added jewels, allowing players to customize the passive tree. Delirium is adding new jewels that not only customize the tree, but add to it. Some of those jewels even let you add to the additions. And even those might be expandable… You might even say the choices are… maddening.

Of course, the Delirium league doesn’t launch in a vacuum. Like all our updates, Delirium comes with new skills, items, and myriad other improvements and additions.

Now that Delirium is out, I hope you’ll join us, because it’s sure to be a lot of fun. I know I’ll be playing, and watching other players react to all the strange manifestations they’re going to see and hear!

  • Path of Exile: Conquerors of the Atlas is Now Live on PS4

Path of Exile: Conquerors of the Atlas is Now Live on PS4

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

Even by Grinding Gear Games’ standards, the newly released Conquerors of the Atlas expansion for Path of Exile is huge and turns the Atlas endgame inside out. In the previous endgame storyline, players discover an ancient, primordial force that roams the Atlas of Worlds, pursue it to the center of the Atlas, and, if they’re skilled enough, defeat it, sealing it away. But what if another group of Exiles were the ones who managed to rid the Atlas of the Elder? What if those Exiles threatened your world?

And, most importantly, how on earth do we make this canon? The initial idea for this storyline was an attempt to work actual player behavior into the storyline. Namely, that once the big, bad evil of the current Endgame content (the Elder) was defeated, players would… just keep playing. There’s only so many times you can run a Shore map before you lose your mind.

In Conquerors of the Atlas, you’ll discover what the consequences of long-term exposure to the maddening, twisted worlds of the Atlas can do to the unwary, and you’ll mount a last defense against new foes.

Introducing five incredibly difficult boss encounters, socketable Atlas “Watchstones” which allow you to reveal once-hidden maps and control the difficulty of the maps you challenge, and a slew of new rewards to unlock, Conquerors of the Atlas will provide dozens, if not hundreds, of hours of new challenges for even the best Path of Exile players, and at least an hour of confusion for returning players who didn’t pay attention to the announcement.

Also included in this expansion are new currency items and powerful new ways to augment your equipment, unlocking countless new character builds.

All of this is coming alongside the Metamorph Challenge League. In the Metamorph Challenge League, you can take samples from any monster in Path of Exile and assemble them into a potent boss enemy, capable of using skills from the monsters whose samples you’ve used. That’s right — you can build your own boss! The boss you create shifts forms between all the sampled monsters, making for a fight that is dynamic both in gameplay and visuals. And if players die because the boss is too hard, they only have themselves to blame! The balance team is finally off the hook. Just kidding! The balance team is never off the hook.

Once you reach the Atlas (and start exploring the vast changes), you’ll even be able to take samples from the powerful map bosses. The tougher the enemy you create, the more richly you’ll be rewarded. If you’re lucky, you’ll even get some Catalysts, a new type of currency that enhances certain properties on your rings, amulet and belt.

We’re incredibly excited to see how players fare against all the new challenges, and even what challenges they give themselves through the Metamorph system. And, as always, it’s all 100% free to play. We hope you’ll join us!

  • Path of Exile: Blight launches September 9

Path of Exile: Blight launches September 9

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

Grinding Gear Games is proud to announce Path of Exile: Blight! Set to launch on September 9, Blight is the latest in ‘s quarterly expansion updates. Each expansion introduces a new challenge league, powerful items, skill gems, a shake-up of Path of Exile’s playstyle meta and much, much more.

In Path of Exile: Blight, dangerous fungal growths have begun appearing across the cursed continent of Wraeclast, threatening man and beast alike. With the help of the new NPC Sister Cassia, you are tasked with destroying these growths. Cassia has built a specialised pump for the job, but as her pump siphons the toxic fungal ichors, monsters of all shapes and sizes emerge to defend the Blight. These fiends are particularly hardy. Luckily, Cassia has designed a range of towers to help protect her pump, which you can deploy.

Blight combines the fast, frantic action of Path of Exile’s combat with the strategic fun of tower defense games. To successfully defeat the Blight, you need to make decisions on the fly, stay aware of your surroundings, and plan for what may lay ahead. Successfully defending Cassia’s pump rewards you with valuable weapons and armour, and special oils which Cassia can use to anoint your rings and amulets with powerful enchantments.

Alongside the tower defense gameplay of Blight comes a bumper-crop of new skills, items and balance changes. This update provides significant balance improvements to the Necromancer archetype, with new defensive options like the Meat Shield Skill Gem, Support Gems which augment the AI of your minions (making them more aggressive or defensive) updates to existing minion-themed items, and an overhaul of the Necromancer Ascendancy class.

The Poison Assassin archetype is receiving similar attention, with five new Skill Gems that greatly broaden the gameplay options for players who like to inflict agonising poisons on their foes. The new Elusive mechanic, found on the Assassin Ascendancy class, adds more mobility for a class that likes to get in, get the job done, and get out.

Likewise, the Mine Saboteur archetype will soon have access to a set of new Mine Skill and Support gems, with existing Mine gems undergoing significant rebalancing to make the Mine playstyle feel more tactical and tactile. The Saboteur Ascendancy, too, has seen improvements.

For those of you who play Action RPGs for that sweet, sweet loot, we are, of course, adding potent new unique items, divination cards, and, with Cassia’s anointing, an avenue to augment items in powerful new ways (including the ability to add any Passive Skill Tree notable to your amulet!).

One of the core design philosophies of Path of Exile is to allow players to play the way they want to play. To that end, we’re changing the way Master Missions are dealt out in Path of Exile’s endgame, the Atlas of Worlds. Where once you had to actively pursue a Master Mission, or permanently miss out, you’ll now be able to accumulate these Missions over time, being able to then play them at your own pace and on which ever endgame Map areas you’d like!

As with every Path of Exile update, all of these additions, as well as everything in the core game, is 100% free to play. The Blight League will last for approximately three months, and features a fresh game economy. The start of a new League is the most exciting time to play Path of Exile, with thousands of players racing to be the first to discover everything the new league has to offer, so we hope you’ll join us when Blight launches on September 9!
