  • Star Wars Battlefront II Review

    Star Wars Battlefront II Review

    Reading Time: 8 minutes

If there’s one thing that Star Wars Battlefront II accomplishes well, it’s the feeling of being in the universe of the legendary film series. Serving up the greatest hits of all things Star Wars, the follow-up to DICE’s 2015 multiplayer-focused game presents a package that features a greater breadth of content, including an admirable single-player campaign. But the game overall is weighed down by an overbearing and convoluted progression system that doesn’t value the average player’s time, obscuring an otherwise solid Star Wars experience.

Set across the backdrop of the entire Star Wars saga–encompassing the prequels, the original three films, and the new trilogy–Battlefront II’s online modes and single-player offerings expand the scope of its galactic battles to feature more variety in its locations. From taking part in aerial dogfights above Kamino to raiding the Death Star II and escaping before its destruction, the sequel puts its campaign and 14 multiplayer maps set across the 40-year history of the series to good use, showing a clear difference in aesthetics and tone from one time-period to the next.

Unlike the first Battlefront, the sequel contains a narrative-driven single-player campaign. Set during the twilight of the Galactic Empire after Return of the Jedi, the story sows the seeds for the First Order in The Force Awakens. You take on the role of Iden Versio, commander of Imperial special-forces outfit Inferno Squad. She normally works to undermine Rebel forces with wet-work missions and other forms of espionage. But after the destruction of the second Death Star, her loyalty to the Empire is put to the test when an increasingly desperate Imperial army takes drastic measures to ensure its future.

While the brisk 4-5 hour campaign features some strong writing and performances from its cast–with some standout levels that show off the visual luster and diversity of locations within the universe–the potential of its Imperial point-of-view soon becomes lost. Falling into some rather predictable twists, the story eventually turns into a familiar by-the-numbers Star Wars adventure, where the good guys and bad guys are clearly defined, and with a lead up to the final act’s confrontation that’s signposted from a mile away.

On occasion, the campaign will switch things up with levels that feature familiar faces in entirely different scenarios, adding some moments of levity to the story. The downside of these missions is that they often veer into pure fan-service territory, leaving Iden Versio–who proves to be an interesting character with her unique view on the galactic struggle–standing in the shadow of more-established characters. This is made worse by an abrupt ending that teases future updates to the campaign, instead of delivering a strong conclusion for its hero’s journey. The campaign does a decent job of showing the internal strife within the Empire’s ranks, even allowing you to explore an eerily sterile and oppressive Imperial civilization on Iden’s homeworld of Vardos. But it falls a bit short of making it a remarkable journey for its characters.

Outside of the campaign and massive multiplayer battles, there are side-modes that offer some interesting diversions. The Arcade mode makes a return, featuring themed levels where you battle AI bots as classic Light and Dark side characters. While it isn’t a particularly deep mode to dive into, with each mission offering increasing tiers of difficulty for better rewards, it can be fun to try out the different heroes against increasing numbers of enemies. Moreover, the fan-favorite Heroes vs Villains mode makes a return. Cutting out unnecessary filler, players can choose their unlocked characters–such as the rocket wielding Boba Fett, to the unstable Kylo Ren–and compete in 4v4 battles in over-the-top and ridiculous fashion. Heroes vs Villains will be the mode to unwind and cut loose with, away from the chaos of the epic conflicts.

Battlefront II’s main attraction is its expansive multiplayer content. From the 40-player conquest battles in Galactic Assault to the smaller, infantry-focused skirmishes in Blitz and Strike, there’s a greater variety of multiplayer modes than before. Selecting from several infantry classes and hero characters–including Luke Skywalker, Rey, Han Solo, and the story campaign’s Iden Versio–Multiplayer battles are usually intense affairs, especially at the full capacity of 40 players. Along with some stellar visual and sound-design, the large-scale battles have the same exciting flow as Star Wars‘ most iconic fights, where one heroic action can turn the tide of a conflict.

Over the course of each match, you’ll acquire Battle Points, which you can cash-in for mid-battle rewards–such as piloting special starfighters or taking control of select hero characters to dish out punishment. While Galactic Assault will likely be the most popular mode for fans to see much of the game’s systems in action, the upgraded Starfighter Assault deserves recognition. Now with more responsive and tighter controls for maneuvering your vessels, the aerial- and space-focused mode features Battlefront II’s most intense missions. There’s nothing more exciting than piloting an A-Wing interceptor through a tight space and pulling off a killer shot in the nick of time.

Your set of troopers, starfighters, and hero characters can be boosted with Star Cards. They can amplify stats, add bonus attributes, and even give characters alternate loadouts–such as replacing a Heavy trooper’s energy shield for a grenade launcher. As you acquire more Star Cards and increase their ranks for a particular class or hero, the overall level for that character increases. The number of ways you can modify your characters is impressive, and the game gives you options to switch things up however you see fit. After each battle, you’ll collect experience for your overall multiplayer rank and credits to purchase loot crates in the in-game store. Unfortunately, the focus on chasing Star Cards–and the prominence of loot crates–reveals bigger issues related to the progression.

„The biggest problem with this system is that it’s never clearly explained.“

Not only is this entire system confusing, it’s also problematic that most of your unlocks and earnings come from opening loot crates. By relying on randomly yielded weapons, resources, cosmetic items, and Star Cards of varying grades, Battlefront II ties its progression to dice rolls. You can acquire and upgrade Star Cards on your own by using crafting components (also found in loot crates), but this also leads into the problem of gating. To upgrade a card, you have to ensure that your class level and overall multiplayer ranking meet certain standards–which in turn means having to rank up several levels in-game, and spending precious resources on loot crates for more resources and cards. Simply focusing on the characters and classes you like to play isn’t enough.

Due to the randomness, and the inherent dependence on the loot crates, progression is often dictated by what these results are. This can steer you away from classes you’d prefer to use, and more annoying results in receiving cards for hero characters you have yet to unlock. With how progression is structured, simply spending time with the Heavy or Assault classes does not guarantee more loot for them, as advancing them is all tied to the luck of the draw. This is especially frustrating when you invest so much time in the game–coming across others online who’ve had better luck or purchased pre-orders copies to acquire epic cards for their characters–only to see your favorite classes fall by the wayside due to the overall systems working against your favor.

While the game gives you options to purchase premium currency in the form of crystals–which you can buy in bundles costing up to $100–these can only be used to buy more loot crates. This is all made worse by the cumbersome menu system, which prompts you to exit out of multiplayer games to collect your paltry rewards from milestones and challenges while also obscuring vital info such as player rank and class data.

The biggest problem with this system is that it’s never clearly explained. While you’ll eventually come to understand how credits, crystals, and crafting components are used, you’ll still have to reconcile the fact that the time you invest in the game won’t always be rewarded with progress, or at least in the way you want.

In this way, Battlefront II plants itself in the same territory as free-to-play games, with much of its content and characters tucked away behind progression walls and randomized loot crates. This is an especially disappointing reality for a full-priced release. Above all, it ends up doing a disservice to the core gameplay, which can still provide solid moments of enjoyment despite the looming presence of its progression systems. Many of these issues related to the meta-game fall by the wayside when you’re in the thick of battle, as you’re taking part in the massive struggle throughout the many locales in the Star Wars universe.

While its main narrative feels unresolved, and the general loop of the multiplayer carries a number of issues, Battlefront II still manages to evoke that same sense of joy and excitement found in the core of what the series is all about. But as it stands, the biggest hurdle that Battlefront II will need to overcome–for its simultaneous attempts to balance progression with genuine feeling of accomplishments–is deciding on what type of game it wants to be.

Editor’s note: (November 20, 2017 — 6:54 PM PST): EA has applied a number of revisions and tweaks to Star Wars Battlefront II, and we at GameSpot have done our best to keep up with the changes that have been made to the game around its release. Recently, EA removed all microtransactions from the game, and while that seems like a change that would be for the better, many of the rewards and systems in place have not been altered to make up for the lack of paid options. This has not only resulted in fewer options for people, but has made the overall grind in Battlefront II a necessary chore. EA has promised to continue monitoring the game and adjusting the progression system based on player feedback, but when those changes will occur and what they will be remains to be seen. Despite the removal of the microtransactions, player progression is still largely tied to the randomized loot boxes–mitigating player agency and choice in multiplayer. We are moving forward with our final score now that we’ve had time to thoroughly test the stability of Battlefront II’s servers, but will retain the original review-in-progress text for future reference.

Editor’s note (November 16, 2017 — 5:47 PM PST):EA has removed all microtransactions and have started measures to overhaul the progression systems. This review was written prior to the game’s November 17 launch, and will be updated over the next few days as we spend more time with the game’s modified systems.

  • Rainbow Six Siege DLC For Year 3 Announced, New Maps And Operators Coming

Rainbow Six Siege DLC For Year 3 Announced, New Maps And Operators Coming

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

Ubisoft has announced that Rainbow Six Siege will receive a third year of DLC and additional support next year. Over the course of 2018, eight new Operators, two new maps, and one „existing map makeover“ will be added to the shooter.

Year 3–as with Year 1 and Year 2–will consist of four seasons, each including two new Operators. The first of those four seasons is called Operation Chimera, which will include „biohazard specialist“ characters from France and Russia. It will also include Outbreak, a new, limited-time co-op event. Outbreak is free-to-play for Siege owners, and it will take place over four weeks during Year 3 Season 1.

    Gallery image 1Gallery image 2

Following Operation Chimera, Season 2 will include two new Italian GIS Operators and a new map set in Italy. Season 3, meanwhile, will bring one character from the UK’s Scotland Yard and one from the US’s Delta Force. Additionally, an existing map will be reworked for this season, bringing „considerable changes to level design and art direction.“ Ubisoft says „the essence of the map will remain the same, but the gameplay and tactics will be completely different.“ Finally, Season 4 will introduce two Moroccan Operators and a new map from the same region.

Year 3’s season pass will be available to purchase on December 12. Little more is known about Year 3 or Operation Chimera at present, though Ubisoft says more will be revealed at the Six Invitational esports tournament in February.

Ubisoft has continued to support Siege since its launch in December 2015. The final season of Year 2, Operation White Noise, arrives on November 20, bringing with it a new map and three new Operators. For more, check out all the details for Rainbow Six Siege’s Operation White Noise.

Siege’s previous big expansion, Operation Blood Orchid, was released in September. It included the new Theme Park map as well as three operators: Ela, Ying, and Lesion. Traditionally, Rainbow Six Siege DLC drops have included just two operators, but both Blood Orchid and White Noise contain three due to the dedicated Poland expansion being canceled earlier this year.

  • Doomsday Clock #1 Successfully Combines The DC And Watchmen Universes

Doomsday Clock #1 Successfully Combines The DC And Watchmen Universes

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

DC’s newest event is a self-contained mini-series that pays homage to one of the greatest comic stories of all time, Watchmen, all while introducing it into the DC Universe. This is something we’ve all known has been coming, since the DC Rebirth one-shot hit comic shops back in May 2016, when fans around the world found out that Dr. Manhattan had a hand in shaping the current DC Universe.

But is Doomsday Clock any good, or does it fall flat like 2012’s Before Watchmen series? Obviously, nothing will live up to Watchmen, but judging from the first issue of Doomsday Clock, DC has something special on its hands that adds to the mythos of these characters and the world they inhabit.

The first issue is relatively inclusive. You don’t need to be a Watchmen or DC expert to truly understand what this book tries to accomplish. Does it help to have read Watchmen to fully appreciate all the subtle nuances and references? Sure it does, but not having read the original mini-series won’t hinder the audience’s understanding of the plot, the characters, or the world this all takes place in.

    No Caption Provided

Doomsday Clock #1 takes place seven years after the events of Watchmen, and the opening pages do a fine job at delivering expositional narration that doesn’t feel like expositional narration. That’s because it’s introducing us to the narrator–a familiar character who now has an obsession with breakfast–as well as driving the story. The missing years are condensed and the reader is brought right up to speed. There is no time to waste in what seems to be a book that has the potential to change the DCU forever. The story’s hook is intriguing, and it’s a page-turner with an exciting hook to keep the reader engaged.

Writer Geoff Johns has channeled the pacing and tonality Alan Moore presented in the original Watchmen and put his own twist on it. While Johns is a fabulous writer who has put his stamp on many series, this doesn’t feel like a quintessential Geoff Johns book. Watchmen had this underlying idea that you can’t trust anyone because an enemy could be around every corner. Johns hits on that sense of paranoia pretty well. He doesn’t nail it out-of-the-park in that regard, but he comes close. Where the writing truly shines is in how the book is slower-paced and each scene feels meticulously crafted. Johns‘ style has changed for the majority of the first issue, and while we can’t get into any details within this review, we do see his multiple writing styles–mixing Moore’s pacing and structure with his own, contemporary comic writing–within the first issue. It’s noticeable when it happens, but this change happens for a reason. Everything happens for a reason in the first issue.

Johns, artist Gary Frank, and colorist Brad Anderson are an exceptionally underrated creative team. Their work on the Action Comics story „Brainiac“ is one of the greatest Superman stories ever told. The art team continues to deliver some brilliant visuals in Doomsday Clock #1. Frank’s interpretation of the Watchmen Universe works. The layouts are reminiscent of Dave Gibbon’s style in the original 1986 book, but Frank is making this story his own. The story feels theatrical and epic, even when it’s just a few people riding in a car. In addition, Anderson’s colorwork is solid. There is a bit of disappointment that his work has a bit too much depth, as John Higgins’s colors in Watchmen were a bit more flat, but Anderson is working within the same color palette as Higgins. However, it would have been nice to see a little more use of purple within the first issue, as that was a big part of the original comic.

Doomsday Clock is an interesting book to say the least. Many hold Watchmen to be a sacred story, one that should be its own separate entity and left untouched. It is a phenomenal book, but Doomsday Clock only adds to that mythos. While it probably won’t be as groundbreaking as the original story it follows, the first issue is compelling, and the creative team behind the mini-series is a trustworthy team, one that you should feel comfortable with telling this story. The story feels logical, as the events leading up to this in Rebirth and the Batman/Flash crossover „The Button“ have prepared readers for the Watchmen’s arrival. Thankfully, it works, and even those who are extremely skeptical of this story will find this first issue worthy of the Watchmen name.

Doomsday Clock #1 hits comic shops on Wednesday, November 22 and will cost $5.

JTV usernames are now yours for the taking

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

We’re publicly releasing the nearly 30 million inactive usernames that were used on Twitch’s predecessor, Justin.tv.

These highly coveted names have been unavailable since we retired the Justin.tv brand a few years ago, but we’re excited to finally make them available again. You’re welcome, xXNewbLord07Xx.

To commemorate this, we’re resetting the 60-day rename cooldown on all accounts that have changed their names already. Simply go to your Profile Settings. Beside your username you’ll see text indicating that you’re eligible to make a name change.

Once you’ve changed your name, the abandoned username will be held by Twitch for a minimum of six months. We may decide to return it to the pool of available usernames for the community and new users. We will not recycle Partner usernames, except in special circumstances.

We often receive requests for taken but inactive usernames. Unfortunately, at this time, we still do not accept direct requests to take a name from another existing account. Inactive usernames are subject to our username recycle and reuse policy. Please see this blog for more information on how that works.

Please note, streamers, that you will lose access to your dashboard stats if you change your username. To preserve your streamer stats, you must export them prior to changing your username. It should also be noted that the URL for your channel page will change and the old one will not redirect to your new one, so be sure to update the link wherever you are using it externally.

There is a lot to consider when changing your username, but we hope you’ll get some good use out of this tool.

*Important clarification to Affiliates only: An earlier email stated that affiliate usernames will not be recycled. We want to clarify that if you change your username, your old username may be recycled after 6 months.

We’re hardcore! We’re hardcore! House of Hardcore 35 airs live only on Twitch

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

For over 25 years, professional wrestler Tommy Dreamer has pushed his body to the limit to entertain audiences worldwide. He helped change the face of wrestling as we know it during his years as the “Innovator of Violence.” Now he’s about to do it again as his promotion, House of Hardcore, airs live, exclusively on Twitch for the very first time this Saturday, November 18 at 5PM PT.

House of Hardcore was founded to be what Tommy Dreamer calls “an alternative viewing option for professional wrestling.” It’s one part legendary wrestlers, one part young stars, and a whole lot of blood, sweat and tears inside the squared circle. As Dreamer states more succinctly, House of Hardcore is “No politics. No BS. Just wrestling.”

It’s also no coincidence that the first House of Hardcore show on Twitch will emanate from The 2300 Arena in Philadelphia, PA. You may not be familiar with its present name, but long time wrestling fans definitely know the legend of the world’s most notorious bingo hall. “I brought my first Twitch show to the Arena purposely,” says Dreamer. “I got to witness so many wrestling moments live in ECW. Being able to now give those same type of moments to wrestling fans means everything to me. It’s been my home for a long time and will continue to be till the day I die.”

So, what’s in store for House of Hardcore’s first-ever live Twitch event? Tommy Dreamer vs. Joey Mercury in a first blood match, Nick Aldis vs. Billy Gunn, appearances by Austin Aries, MVP, Shane Douglas and much more. Watch and chat with other wrestling fans at 5 PM PT this Saturday, November 18, exclusively on Twitch.tv/HouseOfHardcore.

X-Men Spin-off Could Star James Franco As Multiple Man

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

In James Franco’s next movie, The Disaster Artist, he plays enigmatic and bizarre The Room director Tommy Wiseau. Ahead of that movie’s release, though, Franco is already looking for his next strange role.

Deadline reports that 20th Century Fox is currently developing an X-Men spin-off for Franco, which would see him play Multiple Man–a mutant with the ability to instantly create clones of himself. The film would be part of 20th Century Fox’s X-Men universe, which also includes the Deadpool movies, along with the upcoming New Mutants, X-Men: Dark Phoenix, and Gambit.

The project is currently in the works with Wonder Woman writer Allan Heinberg working on the script and Simon Kinberg producing alongside Franco. Should the film move forward, it will be Franco’s first time acting in the superhero world since he played Harry Osborn in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy.

Multiple Man, who is also known by the alter ego Jamie Madrox, was first introduced in an issue of Giant Size Fantastic Four in 1975. He first appeared on the big screen in 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand. The movie portrayed him as a villain, played by Eric Dane.

Luckily, thanks to the wildly complicated timeline of the X-Men films, it would be pretty easy to act like Dane’s version of the character never happened. A similar thing happened with Deadpool, who was first introduced in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, though Ryan Reynolds played both versions of the character.
