To celebrate women’s contributions to gaming, we’re focusing on the main character energy that women bring every single day to the Gaming industry. Whether it be the women who develop games, test games, or market games, we’re bringing our all to the franchises that you all know and love to play. As the Senior Director of Gaming for Everyone & Sustainability at Xbox, I’ve worked with the entire Gaming organization to ensure we’re approaching decisions with an inclusion mindset, because, as our Gaming for Everyone Core Principle states: “When we don’t intentionally include, we unintentionally exclude.” You can see the results of this across all of Xbox, and this is how we deliver on our mission to bring the joy and community of gaming to everyone on the planet.

An approach I take in life is, “Live your life by design – not by default.” From a gaming perspective, we apply this with an “inclusion by design” framework to ensure women feel truly represented and experience a deep sense of belonging, across all aspects of gaming. Whether it’s about intentional, thoughtful character design where women see themselves as the main character, how people play either on console, PC, or handheld–the experiences for women gamers vary just as dramatically as any other community.

What excites me the most is seeing more women actively participating in gaming, either as a developer or a fan–or both! While we recognize International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month, the work to ensure women feel represented, seen, and belong on Xbox happens every single day. It’s a journey and we’re always learning how to get better, but we’re committed and in it for the long haul. I believe that willingness to commit to every step in the journey, and get stronger with each step is main character energy.

Join me in celebrating women who have inspired you in the gaming industry by posting on LinkedIn and nominating an #XboxMainCharacter. It could be a woman who developed a game you love, a content creator whose channel you love, or simply someone who helped you feel a sense of belonging and invited you to play! We stand on the shoulders of those who have done this work before us—the many amazing people who included us–and it is our legacy to continue supporting and making gaming approachable and inclusive for the women behind us. Join Xbox in our celebration by reading about the exciting activations taking place throughout the year below:

Artist Amika Cooper Reimagines the Xbox Logo in Celebration of Women who Bring Main Character Energy

Artist Amika Cooper wearing a green sweater and jeans reclining in a chair at a desk.

For Women’s History Month, Xbox commissioned artist Amika Cooper, also known as blackpowerbarbie, to redesign the Xbox logo in celebration of women gamers and the way they define who gamers are by embracing main character energy. Amika used that inspiration to create an image of the Xbox sphere at the center of a lair, representing a safe place in gaming created by and celebrating the creativity of women.  In her words, “The logo is presented as a gem because I think the energy women bring to gaming makes us ‘diamonds in the rough’. I wanted it to be vibrant, stimulating, and fun – a lot of my work is creating my own surreal and fantastic landscapes, so I wanted to impart that sense of whimsy here.”

After 700 Years in the Making, Inkulinati 1.0 is Now Available to Play

    Reading Time: 8 minutes
    • Releasing on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and via Xbox Game Pass
    • 700-year-old manuscripts as concept art
    • Inkulinati and Pentiment team up with characters available in both games

    Hello Xbox community!

Today marks a monumental milestone – our medieval turn-based strategy game, Inkulinati, is leaving the Xbox Game Preview Program and you can now enjoy the full 1.0 release! To mark the occasion, we’ve got a brand-new shiny release trailer, voiced by famous bardcore musician Hildegard von Blingin’. Check it out above!

So. what is Inkulinati, you might ask? Well, it is a turn-based strategy game, where a rabbit’s bottom can be deadlier than a dog’s sword (trust me, this is not a mistake!). It is inspired by real medieval art and is entirely played on the pages of medieval manuscripts. If you’ve ever seen old medieval books with funny drawings on the sides of the pages, or even medieval memes on the internet, these hilarious doodles (called “marginalia”) were used as the basis for, well, everything in our game.

    Inkulinati animals

All of our characters, maps (which we call Battlefields), beasts and objects are based on these drawings made by medieval monks and scribes, sometimes called Illuminators. That’s why we say Inkulinati has been over 700 years in the making.

So, while you may come across some ridiculous shenanigans like donkeys playing trumpets with their bottoms, fish wielding knives and devils with faces instead of butts, trust me, it’s not us who came up with it – it’s actually people from the Middle Ages and Inkulinati is a tribute to their work.

In fact, to be as authentic as possible, we even consulted with a real medievalist to make sure we were using these inspirations correctly and staying true to the source material. So, as you sit back and watch your army of manuscript monkeys throw poop at enemy beasts, you can relax in the knowledge that you’re actually learning history (feel free to flex that fact in front of your history teacher!).

    Inkulinati sketch 2

As I mentioned earlier, we’ve been part of the Xbox Game Preview program for just over a year now. And in that year, we’ve made a lot of changes. We added a lot of content, worked tirelessly on balancing and tweaking, squashed those pesky bugs – we’ve listened a lot to you – our community – to make Inkulinati the best it can be. And at this point, I must give a huge shout out to the wonderful Xbox community who have helped us improve along the way.

Thanks to you, we’ve added a lot of new features and ironed out the kinks you thought needed ironing out. For example, our tutorial (called the Academy) is now very different from what it was a year ago – it consists of learning the game through numerous puzzles and challenges that require you to understand the mechanics of Inkulinati in order to solve them and progress. We have added some accessibility features and reduced the shaking of the screen during certain actions to give you a better experience. Without you, Inkulinati would not be the game it is today – so thank you!

But hey, let’s talk about one of the coolest things that has ever happened to our studio – it happened during our time in the Game Preview program. We had the chance to work with the fine folks at Obsidian Entertainment and their fantastic game Pentiment!

    Inkulinati pentiment key art

How did this happen, you might ask? Well, during Gamescom 2022, where Inkulinati and Pentiment were both showcased on the Xbox stand as future Game Pass releases (in fact, we were literally neighbors – our gaming stations were next to each other), and we had the opportunity to discuss a collaboration for the ages – cameo appearances of our characters in both of our games. We both thought it would be a good fit, as historical accuracy and the manuscripts themselves are an important part of both titles.

One conversation led to another, and eventually we welcomed Pentiment’s main protagonist – Andreas – as a playable character in our game! (You can play as Andreas in the Journey – a single-player campaign with rogue-like elements) In return, some of our in-game characters were added to the margins of the Pentiment books! What’s cool is that it was a real collaboration – Obsidian artists recreated our art in the Pentiment style, and our art director drew Andreas himself. It was right thing to do – that way all the characters, originals and their versions from another game, are concise and fit the game they’re now part of.

For us indie game developers making our first game, it was an incredible experience. Never in our wildest dreams did we think we would have a character from a game by Obsidian Entertainment – a studio we were fans of before we started our game development journey – in our game, and our characters in theirs.

So, if you decide to play Pentiment (and you should – it’s a real labour of love and one of the most extraordinary gaming experiences out there), you might also come across some Inkulinati characters in Pentiment’s in-game books. If someone had told us that our characters would be in an Obsidian game, we would have thought it ridiculous. So, our story just proves that crazy things do happen!

Thank you so much for taking the time to read our story and I really, really hope that you will have a blast-of-a-time in our turn-based strategy. Inkulinati 1.0 is now available to play on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows and via Game Pass. Thank you so much for reading and good luck out there illuminating the Battlefields! Oh, and we are still planning to do some post-release updates, so feel free to join our Discord and share your feedback with us!

Inkulinati is an ink-based strategy game straight from medieval manuscripts, where a rabbit’s bum can be deadlier than a dog’s sword. Take your turn in Inkulinati duels filled with unexpected tactical depth (and humour!). Embark on an ever-changing journey, build your own bestiary, defeat medieval superstars and collect perks to unleash special powers. Become a master of the Living Ink, grab your quill and build your unique strategy time after time so that you can be named the greatest Inkulinati of all time! INKULINATI IS INSPIRED BY REAL-LIFE MEDIEVAL MARGINALIA
700 years in the making, finally these bizarre art pieces can come alive in a video game and show that medieval people also had their “memes” and that they laughed from the same silly things that we do today. You’ll see sword-wielding rabbits, dogs with spears, trumpets lodged in bottoms, human-eating snails, and more. Much, much more… FIGHT LIKE AN INKULINATI
Inkulinati are a legendary group who battle one another on the pages of medieval manuscripts. They fight by drawing Beasts with the Living Ink. Thanks to this magical substance, those creatures come to life and an epic battle ensues.Move your Beasts across the battlefield, perform actions on or with them, make tactical use of obstacles and collect more Living Ink to draw new Beasts which allows you to gain an advantage over your opponent. MULTIPLE DEADLY (AND BIZARRE) BEASTS TO UNLOCK
Donkeys playing trumpets with their bottoms, bishop cats vanquishing heretics with prayers, heavy but deadly snails that eat units alive, and more. Much, much more. They all have their special skills and are waiting for your command. SPECIAL, BATTLE TIDE-TURNING ACTIONS PERFORMED BY THE INKULINATI
It’s not just your Beasts that can cause havoc and damage. Use your fists to smash your opponent’s units, draw obstacles to create barriers, relocate your units with a move of your finger, or explode your troops to create pure, pure chaos. Just remember – your opponent can do it too. ADAPT YOUR TACTIC TO EVERY BATTLE
Each Inkulinati has its own army, with different Beasts, who in turn, have different abilities, strengths, and unfortunately, weaknesses (or fortunately – depending which side you’re on). But it’s not just the armies that can influence who will win any given duel. Each Battlefield is its own domain, with its own particular dangers that you should watch out for, and opportunities that you can use. You will have to use your wits and adapt your strategy to beat the opposing Inkulinati’s army on each specific Battlefield. A SINGLE-PLAYER CAMPAIGN
Uncover the mystery and secrets of Inkulinati and face such opponents as Death, Dante Alighieri, and more. Go out into the world and start your adventure! Fight the biggest Inkulinati masters in the land, tame the untamed Beasts, build your ultimate army, try to bring back your Master from the clutches of death, and most importantly, finish your grand quest with the biggest party that the middle ages have ever seen! Howza!!! CREATE AND DEVELOP YOUR OWN CHARACTER
As any aspiring Inkulinati Master, you will get to create your own Tiny-Inkulinati. During your journey you will learn the secret techniques of drawing new Beasts and Inkulinati Hand Actions, allowing you to choose the composition of your army. You can be a brave knight that has no fear and will send his loyal troops straight at his opponents. Or perhaps you would like to play with a bit more tact? In that case, you can be a nun who with the power of prayer can confuse her enemies and heal thy own servants. Those styles, and more, are waiting to be discovered and made your own. Express yourself! EVERY BATTLE HAS ITS OWN STORY
To mark every battle in history books for all future generations to see, a procedurally generated text describes the dramatic (or hilarious) events in detail just above the battlefield.

  • Design an Original Starfield Spacesuit and it Could Be Yours for Real

Design an Original Starfield Spacesuit and it Could Be Yours for Real

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

Starfield is the first new universe in over 25 years from the award-winning creators behind Skyrim and Fallout 4, Bethesda Game Studios. Gamers from around the world were excited to jump into this interstellar universe rich with adventure, peril, and excitement.

But before anyone hops into space, they need something critical: a spacesuit.

So, Xbox has partnered up with the European Space Agency (ESA) to give Starfield fans  around the world a chance to win the spacesuit of their dreams, in real life, in addition to other incredible Xbox prizes. This is a physical, wearable, one-of-a-kind garment, fabricated for the most intrepid explorers.

Whether using a provided template as a base, or pushing their imagination to the limit with any creative format of their choice, fans will be asked to provide both a visual illustration of the suit from all sides—hand-drawn, 3D-rendered, or however their vision sees fit—as well as a description of the inspiration of the suit. More specifically, Xbox, Bethesda and the ESA want to know what you would wear in outer space – how would your spacesuit reflect your personal style, individuality and vision for space travel?

After submitting suits through the campaign webpage, the most creative option—the one that truly gives weight to the phrase “out-of-this-world individual style”—will win a full replica of their design, complete with an authentic ESA patch. The contest opens today and runs until 8pm Pacific Time on February 24, 2024, so make sure to hit that spacesuit workbench soon. After that, the winning suit will enter a two-month intensive fabrication process on the path to becoming reality. To see the full rules, visit here.

Fantastic role-playing games are all about player expression, and this contest allows fans to experience that in a completely different way. Our stories are unique to us, so what we wear while we travel through those stories should be too. So, submit your own design, then while you wait, we suggest downloading and exploring the worlds of Starfield with Xbox Game Pass.

    About Starfield

In this next generation role-playing game set amongst the stars, create any character you want and explore with unparalleled freedom as you embark on an epic journey to answer humanity’s greatest mystery.  Experience it for yourself on Xbox Game Pass.

Brand new in 2023 is the addition of ‘Race Replay’ – a game mode which offers single race scenarios based on data and conditions from the real-life 2023 FIA Formula One World Championship. Start from the grid and improve on the team’s results in ‘Starting Grid’, or rewrite some of the season’s key strategy calls in ‘Race Moments’ as you answer a selection of 2023’s ‘what ifs’. New Race Replay scenarios are added after every race in the 2023 season, so you’ll regularly have new content as we accelerate towards the glamorous neon lights of Las Vegas and the season finale in Abu Dhabi.

    F1 Manager 23

For those seeking the ultimate challenge, the returning and improved career mode will see you taking responsibility for every area of your team. At HQ your leadership and direction will cover all bases, from designing and researching parts, recruiting and developing drivers and staff, even down to defining the training schedule of your pit crew. On-track, you’ll see all the action unfold in a stunning broadcast-like experience, with the new visor cam bringing you even closer to every thrilling moment. Relaying commands to your drivers via real team radio messages, your strategizing will be put to the test as you aim to maximize your results, reacting to pit-stop mistakes, safety cars, and weather changes.

Before you take your seat on the pit wall, we’ve put together a dossier of essential reading for Team Principals to give you the edge over your rivals.

    Designing the Ultimate Upgrade

Whilst a star-studded driver line-up might get you moving up the grid order, crucial to your success across the season is the development of new car parts. When designing these, there are a few considerations you’ll want to account for – including managing your Aerodynamic Testing Restriction (ATR) budget. In Formula 1, teams are allocated a limited number of hours they can spend testing their aerodynamic parts in the Wind Tunnel or with Computational Fluid Dynamics, with those towards the back of the field being allocated more to help them close the gap.

ATR allocation will reset at set times throughout the season, and any unused time when this happens will be lost, so top Principals will utilize of all these hours before their allocation resets. Making the most of this testing will allow you to improve your car’s pace against your competitors and increase the Expertise of your team, allowing you to create even better parts in future.

    F1 Manager 23

    Building Your Dream Team

Crucial to success in F1 is an ability to always look ahead and plan for the next challenge. In F1 Manager 2023, you’ll invest your budgets into developing your car, your facilities, and your people. Staffing your team with the best upcoming talent can often give you an edge when you might have a disadvantage on the balance sheet.

When recruiting, consider the impact of changing out a driver or staff member during their contract. There will often be a costly fee for cutting short their time with the team, and instead you might look to offer your new recruit a position starting in the following season. Each driver and key staff member can develop their skills based on your preference, so identifying areas of weakness and considering whether to take the time to train, or whether to opt for an immediate change, will likely be influenced by your own board objectives.

    F1 Manager 23

    Practice Makes Perfect

Although you’re able to simulate each of the three practice sessions during an F1 race weekend, you can gain an edge on your rivals by managing these yourself and responding to each of your drivers’ feedback. When each car is on track, drivers will build up their track familiarity (how well they know how their car handles on the circuit this year) as well as gathering feedback on the individual set-up of the car. Once a driver’s accrued five pieces of feedback covering each major area of the car (indicated by a number out of 5 next to a speech bubble in the driver control panel), it’s best to bring them back into the pitlane to see how you need to adjust.

It might be tempting to put on a fresh set of soft tires in every stint to finish top of the table in practice, remember that you won’t get any points for that! Tire usage is rolled over to each session, with an allocation being returned to Pirelli after every session on track. You’ll need to use a minimum of two compounds during a dry race, so remember that sometimes it can be beneficial to save a set of tires to give yourself the edge when it really counts.

    F1 Manager 23

Tire-ing Work and Crucial Race Strategy

Race strategy is king on track, and even an underperforming car can deliver exceptional results in the right circumstances. Before the race begins, make sure to take a moment to assign a strategy for each driver. Keep an eye on the ‘estimated race time’ to weigh up your options, as well as the weather forecast for any downpours which might create an opportunity.

During the race, it can be easy to give your drivers’ the freedom to push as hard as they possibly can, but a good Team Principal knows when to push and when to hold some pace in reserve. When you ask your drivers to increase their pace, you’ll be increasing their tire wear and their usage of fuel and stored ERS (Energy Recovery System) charge.

As tire life decreases, so too will your drivers’ ability to consistently improve their lap-times. Remember to consider the tire temperatures, which will fluctuate throughout the race depending on how hard your driver is pushing, as well as the track conditions. When the tire drops below 30% of its’ remaining life, expect to see a significant drop in your pace and an increased risk of a costly puncture.

  • Forza Motorsport: The Ultimate Racing Game for Car Lovers – Out Now and Included with Game Pass

Forza Motorsport: The Ultimate Racing Game for Car Lovers – Out Now and Included with Game Pass

    Reading Time: 12 minutes

    Summary

    • Choose from over 500 real-world cars including more than 100 cars new to Forza Motorsport across 20 tracks with fan-favorite locations and multiple track layouts.
    • Race alongside your friends or compete against cutting-edge AI opponents with customizable racing events – from single races to an ongoing career mode.
    • Forza Motorsport is out now for Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC, plus it is included with Game Pass.

Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to visit one of the largest private automobile collections in the world, and as you might expect, the biggest names in the industry were on display – everything from Ferrari and Lamborghini to Jaguar and Bugatti. It even included some of the earliest and rarest American muscle cars like the Yenko Camaro and Plymouth Hemi ‘Cuda convertible. The experience was a bit overwhelming, standing there amidst such pristine and treasured cars, knowing most of them were built with a similar purpose – to go fast, but ultimately sharing the same fate – they never would.

    Forza Motorsport

As a car enthusiast, that is what makes Forza Motorsport so special to me. I know realistically speaking I will never sit behind the wheel of a Bugatti Chiron or Jaguar XJ220, much less drive one. On a racetrack. At 200+ miles per hour. In the rain. But with Forza Motorsport, I can! I love fast cars as much as I do fun games, so today is one that I have been looking forward to all year as Forza Motorsport, my most anticipated game of 2023, races onto Game Pass for Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC.

    Cars, Cars, and More Cars

I don’t know what is more impressive, the fact Forza Motorsport shipped with 500 cars, that 100 of them are new to the series, or that Turn 10 Studios will continue to regularly add more. Nearly 100 years of automotive history is represented in this extraordinary collection, with the oldest car in Forza Motorsport being the 1926 Bugatti Type 35 and the newest being the 2024 Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray, which is one of this year’s cover cars.

With the Free Play mode, you can rent any car and take it for a drive (free of charge, but you will not earn Car XP). So, if you want to test drive a 1981 Ford Fiesta XR2, you can. Or you can get behind the wheel of the most expensive car (currently) in the game, the 2020 Koenigsegg Jesko. To start out, I chose something I have a little bit of real-world experience with, the 2015 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat, before switching over to the 2021 Rimac Nevera, the electric hypercar often billeted as the fastest car in the world. It is indeed fast, and with no gas-powered engine noise, it is also a little eerie, as you race down the track at 200 mph and the only thing you hear is your heart beating in your chest (that might be a slight exaggeration). If you love cars as much as I do, you will have no problem finding a car you love in Forza Motorsport. I can’t guarantee you will have an easy time settling on which one to purchase first.

    Forza Motorsport

    Let’s Go Racing

You can’t have a great racing game without having great places to go racing, and Forza Motorsport features some of the most iconic locations in all of motorsports, with more tracks on the way. The iconic Grand Prix Nürburgring circuit is included, as is the ever-popular Weathertech Raceway Laguna Seca. One of my personal favorites is Lime Rock Park. I just like the layout and how you can let out of the throttle and roll through most of the turns without having to get on the brakes too hard (and it doesn’t have any of those deceptive turns that sneak up on you).

The tracks all feel so real, you will want to grab a hotdog from the concession stand and a t-shirt from one of the merch trailers before heading to the pits. Adding to the realism is the dynamic time-of-day with weather and unique driving conditions feature. Obviously, I knew the game was going to include this, but what I did not expect was the range of possibilities. There are ten Time of Day options ranging from sunrise to midnight, and even more weather options. Would you like your rain to be a drizzle, all out thunderstorm, or something in between, because that is the level of detail you can choose from. These variables will impact how the tracks look and feel, and ultimately how you and the other racers will perform. During several rainy training sessions, I would pull over and just listen to the pitter patter of rain drops on the windshield as I contemplated the meaning of life (okay, really I was just looking for the windshield wiper button).

    Forza Motorsport

Race How You Want With Who You Want

Turn 10 Studios has always placed accessibility at the forefront of Forza Motorsport’s design and is already receiving high praise for it being one of the most accessible games ever made. But the team also deserves recognition for how approachable they have made Forza Motorsport for players of all skill levels by creating a competitive racing platform that caters to rookie racecar drivers all the way up to those wanting the most realistic, immersive racing experience possible. By fine tuning the difficulty and driving assist settings to your skill level, you can create a racing experience that is both challenging and rewarding. And with the new Risk vs Reward feature, you can even select your starting grid position, which will show your projected finish and podium bonus. I was starting out in the 10th position on most races but found I was catching the leader within a few laps, so each race I try to go a spot or two deeper in the field to earn even more Car XP.

As you race, you will earn Car XP, and you can use this to upgrade and tune your car by selecting from more than 800 performance upgrades – including fuel and air systems, engine, platform and handling, tires and wheels, and drivetrain. Using Car XP instead of purchasing the parts allows you to try different setups without further expense. And if you would rather race than tinker, you can opt for the Quick Upgrade and let the game handle tuning your car with a balanced setup.

    Forza Motorsport

If you want to race alone, in a single-player free play or career mode, those options are available. Or you can join any number of online multiplayer games, including your own private matches, and race against others. For those seeking a combination of the two, you will want to check out the Rivals mode, which allows you to compete against ghost cars to post the fastest lap times on tracked leaderboards. You will see how you stack up against the fastest racers without having to race against them. I really enjoyed the Rivals mode because it’s not only a fun and competitive experience, but it is also a great learning aid to see the cars and settings the faster drivers are using and what line they are taking through the turns.

    Forza Motorsport

    Let’s Have a Clean Race

Surely, I am not the only one who has (accidentally) taken a shortcut off track, used the retaining wall to slingshot through turns, and pinballed off other cars on my race to the front of the field. Forza Motorsport implements new features and even incentivizes skillful driving to assist you in becoming the best racecar driver you can be…and it is working because I find myself looking at this feedback each lap to improve the next.

Each track is divided into Track Segments and your performance through each of these scoring loops is evaluated and displayed on screen providing you with immediate feedback. Plus, you are rewarded with Car XP based on your performance, so there is an extra incentive to do well. You will also receive Car XP for regular on-track activities like passing cars and improving on previous Track Segment times. Additionally, you can be penalized with time penalties for illegal passes and running off the track for an extended period.

    Forza Motorsport

Don’t worry, you will still have “pass in the grass” moments like Dale Earnhardt did at Charlotte Motor Speedway All-Star Race back in 1987 and you can still lean on cars and trade a little paint as you navigate those tight turns, but I applaud Turn 10 for implementing creative ways to inspire clean, competitive racing.

Turn 10 Studios has crafted an innovative racing simulation with iconic cars, incredible photorealistic visuals, realistic physics, and lifelike AI racers, but even more than that, they have created a live, connected, immersive, accessible, and ever-changing competitive racing platform that will evolve and grow with the Forza community.

Play Forza Motorsport today with Game Pass on Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC and be sure to follow @ForzaMotorsport and check out the official website.

Being the Best of the Worst: Tips and Strategies for The Lamplighters League

    Reading Time: 10 minutes

    Summary

    • The Lamplighters League is a tactical strategy game where you lead a ragtag team of distinct and colorful characters.
    • Anyone can run an agent into cover and start shooting, but learning how each ability complements the others is critical to your survival.
    • The Lamplighters League is now available to play for Xbox Series X|S, Windows, and available with Game Pass.

One phrase appears again and again in our designs for The Lamplighters League: “Characters, not Units.” From the very start of this project, we wanted to build a tactical strategy game where you didn’t lead an army of interchangeable soldiers, differentiated only by their in-game class, but a ragtag team of distinct and colorful characters. Each agent in our game has a combat style influenced by their personality and their story, and the very best moments come out when you discover ways that these unlikely allies come together on the battlefield to beat the odds.

The game starts off by introducing you to three of these agents: Ingrid, our mysterious femme fatale whose weighted gloves give her the momentum to keep dropping foes with each hit; our “Gentleman-Djinn” Lateef, who can slip through the crossfire without a scratch on him; and last but not least, Eddie, our two-fisted gunfighter whose revolvers will keep spinning as long as he’s hitting his shots. At a glance, their roles in a fight are easily understood, but their abilities are deceptively deep – anyone can run an agent into cover and start shooting, but learning how each ability complements the others is critical to your survival.

The Banished Court, you see, does not fight fair. By the time you meet your starting lineup, the enemy has already spread their forces all over the globe as their sinister leadership prepares to tie the bow on their conquest of the world. The missions you take will see you dramatically outnumbered and outgunned, and the only way you’re going to win your battles is to fight dirty. We thought it might be nice to share some of our dirtiest tricks to help you get started.

    Playing as Eddie

    The Lamplighters League Screenshot

Let’s start with Eddie. His job is fairly straightforward: put bullets into the bad guys. With two guns, he can target two enemies with his standard attack, which is a great advantage in a tactical battle where every action counts. The flipside of this is that Eddie chews through ammunition like popcorn – he has six attacks before he needs to reload, and with two attacks per action, that’ll empty him out quick. Eddie also earns a few skills early in the game that let him take even more shots in a single move, eventually unlocking the ability to target six enemies at a time, but these all cost ammo.

So how do you keep Eddie from spending half the fight reloading? Well, Eddie starts with a passive ability, “Quick Load,” that gives him extra ammo every time he lands a critical hit. Finding ways to give him better shots will not only drop your enemies faster (as critical hits do much more damage) but also keep Eddie’s effectiveness up as he’s able to keep firing, turn after turn, without stopping. There are a few easy ways to boost your crit chances, such as targeting enemies from the flank or while out of cover. Ambushes are a big one, too: the enemy will start a battle if they discover you while sneaking around during your infiltration, but if you start the fight before you’re spotted, every agent on your team gets a healthy bonus to hit and to crit in the first round. If you let Eddie shoot first before the Banished Court can scramble for cover, he may just get some of those shots back.

As the campaign goes on, you might also recruit a weaponsmith who can create gear and accessories that increase crit chances – which would make a great choice for Eddie! Look for ways to flush enemies from cover, apply the “Marked” debuff and the “inspired” buff, and eventually Eddie will become a bullet factory fast enough to win the Great War himself.

    Playing as Lateef

Compared to Eddie, Lateef might not have the same raw firepower or skill set with a gun. But, as the man himself will remind you, he’s not the Gentleman-Gunman; he’s the Gentleman-Djinn, and his skill lies in speed and distraction. Lateef has an incredibly valuable passive ability, “Dodge,” that grants him a free “Evade” buff every time he moves in battle. Even a single square of movement will grant him an Evade, which guarantees the next attack against him will miss. Other characters can also get Evade – for instance, Ingrid starts with that ability – but it costs them one of their actions to apply, whereas Lateef gets it just for doing what he does best: staying on the move. As such, you can run Lateef towards the enemy and present them with a tempting target, and watch them waste their attacks as Lateef effortlessly dodges their shots.

The key to using Lateef’s ability effectively, however, is to know its limits. Evade will only nullify one attack per stack of the buff, so if Lateef has moved once but is targeted twice, he can still be hit. It also doesn’t avoid attacks that cover an area, such as grenades or flame blasts. This is also a good time to bring up Stress: every attack, whether it hits a target or not, builds that character’s stress level, and having your stress reach its maximum can be even more harmful that having your health reach its minimum. Just because Lateef can dodge bullets, that doesn’t mean he enjoys doing so!

Using Lateef is about utilizing his high mobility and picking his moments. Since Lateef can safely avoid an attack every time he moves, he makes for a great flanker, able to rush around behind the enemy without worrying about being caught out of position himself. Standing him in the middle of a pack of enemies is a much bigger risk, of course, but it can also be a lifesaving move to run Lateef through the field with multiple Evades if it means drawing fire away from a more vulnerable agent who is pinned down. It can also be worth distracting the enemy into positioning against Lateef if it means they leave themselves open to crits from Eddie!

    Playing as Ingrid

    The Lamplighters League Screenshot

Once Eddie and Lateef have softened up the Banished Court, it’s Ingrid’s time to shine. Ingrid doesn’t carry a gun, preferring to bring a personal touch to the battle with devastating punches and forceful kicks. While this does make it a little trickier to position her safely, one immediate advantage is that Ingrid’s attacks have their own mobility included. Where most gun-toting characters have to spend separate actions to move and to attack, if Ingrid is within one move of an enemy, she can move and punch with the same action! Any time her punch attack is highlighted, you don’t need to waste an action moving (unless you prefer to prioritize an enemy outside of her range, in which case definitely move first). What’s more, you may have different options for which space Ingrid moves to when she delivers her hit, so don’t just mash the confirm button right away – you may be able to place her into cover from other foes while she gets the job done.

Given that Ingrid will necessarily need to be in the thick of things, she will frequently be vulnerable to attacks from close-by enemies. Luckily, Ingrid has an Evade action that works just as it does for Lateef, except she doesn’t apply it for free simply by moving. If Ingrid is going to end her turn near her foes, be sure to save an action for her to apply Evade before she wraps things up!

Of course, the best way to keep Ingrid healthy is to make sure there’s nobody left to attack her. This is best accomplished with Ingrid’s powerful passive ability, “Killer Instinct,” which grants her an extra action when she finishes off a foe! An absolutely vital part of your strategy in The Lamplighters League will come down to using your agents in the right order. You also don’t have to use all your actions on a single agent at once!

    Bringing it All Together

    The Lamplighters League Screenshot

Consider this example: if Ingrid punches an enemy twice, bringing him to low health, and then Lateef slips around from the flank for the kill shot, that’s great, but if he misses, now Ingrid is in a tough spot. However, if Ingrid hits once, and then you attack with Lateef next, now you have options! If Lateef misses, you can spend Ingrid’s second action on an Evade to dodge the counterattack, but if he hits, Ingrid can spend her second action to take him down – and she gets to go again! When every action counts, getting extra actions is one of the most powerful rewards you can get. As Ingrid earns more skills, she’ll also gain the ability to earn bonus actions more often, and deliver attacks of opportunity as well. If you send Ingrid to finish your weakened foes, she can dance through the enemy lines and drop half a dozen baddies before they know what hit them!

One final tip before we let you loose to try out The Lamplighters League on Xbox Series X|S and Windows: don’t be stingy with your Signature Moves! Every agent gets one big move per mission that can turn a battle on its head, and it can be very tempting to save it “until you really need it.” But these moves don’t carry over at the end of the mission, and you may even find pickups in the field that replenish these powerful abilities, which are wasted if you don’t have any moves to replenish. Plus, special attacks refresh between missions, but agents who go down from injury or stress don’t! It is always better to use your Signature than to let the enemy gain the advantage during a battle, so don’t be shy – let them see what you can do!

As you explore our game, you’ll meet more agents and allies you can recruit, each with their own story and style, and discovering what they can do – and how they work together with your other agents – is what The Lamplighters League is all about. For now, Eddie, Ingrid and Lateef will help you start strong if you use them cleverly. You’ll need everything they’ve got if you’re going to save the world. Good luck!
