This ‘Ghost Clock’ Hidden Under A Sheet In A Museum Looks Ordinary Only Until You Read The Sign Below

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Wendell Castle is the father of art furniture, and his pieces are so masterfully crafted that you don’t know whether you should actually be using them or if they should be in a gallery somewhere.

This clock, dubbed the ‘ghost clock,’ certainly belongs in the art category. Created in 1985, it is on display at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C. and at first glance seems to be simply an old grandfather clock draped in a protective sheet. A new exhibit perhaps, or maybe it was damaged and has been covered while awaiting repairs.

Looks can be deceiving however, and only upon reading the plaque underneath can the truth be revealed. The deception is so convincing, the work so intricately carved and sculpted, that it would be impossible to tell from pictures only. It has certainly gotten the attention of visitors who, confused at first, get the magic aha! moment when reading the explanation on the display plaque below.

Scroll down below to find out how Wendell Castle created his ‘Ghost Clock,’ it’s truly a stunning piece of art!

  • Geek Builds Cat Bed, Looks Like Chain Chomp from Super Mario Bros!

Geek Builds Cat Bed, Looks Like Chain Chomp from Super Mario Bros!

    Reading Time: < 1 minute

Chain Chomps made their first appearance in Super Mario Bros. 3, and bear a resemblance to a ball and chain. Shigeru Miyamoto’s inspiration for this character was from a childhood experience: a dog once tried to bite him, but fortunately, a chain held it back. As a result, this enemy also possesses canine qualities, like barking, and are commonly used as guard dogs throughout the Mario series. Catastrophic Creations decided to pay tribute by building a cat bed shaped just like the Chain Chomps found in game. The company says: „I wanted to design something that could sit in a room as art, but also have a practical use. The box that Chain Chomp’s attached to has hinges mounted from the inside to hide them, but to let you open the box for storage. At first, I really wanted to make a litter box, because in my opinion most litter boxes are very ugly. I liked the thought of people showing off their litter boxes, rather than hiding them in some back room or closet. Once I started on the Chain Chomp, however, I realized it would be a little too small for a litter box. It was the perfect size for a covered bed, though!“
