    Reading Time: 7 minutes

We’re Minhee Kang and Alexa Morita, an animation duo called Good Golly. We’ve been slugging the animation world trying to get any and every project we can.

While working with large brands can be super rewarding, the process for pitching and then actually doing the project can be exhausting. We wanted to keep our lives fun and get back to our creative roots so we started making paper sculptures and posting them on Instagram.

  • I Made These Papercut Illustrations For My Daughter’s Room

I Made These Papercut Illustrations For My Daughter’s Room

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

I’ve created this series of adorable and whimsical paper-cut illustrations of colorful animals as a personal project to complement our daughter’s room and I really fell in love working with paper.

I used a simple layering technique, hand cutting each of the colored papers after they have been sketched, and gluing them to kapaline boards (foam boards, for those of you who are not familiar) to add depth, and then mounting within a square frame to add the final touches. My inspiration can be found through some of my favorite illustrators and my favorite movies.

My favorite theme is ocean and sea, so it didn’t took me long to come up with this idea.

    Exogoroth

Empire strikes back is my most favorite movie of all time, so when I decided to do some papercut illustration on SW theme this was must do, I’ve also did other monsters from SW universe like Diagona or Wampa.

  • I Didn’t Let An Injured Hand Stop Me From Completing Inktober

I Didn’t Let An Injured Hand Stop Me From Completing Inktober

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

My name is Vanessa, and I’m a self-taught illustrator from the US (and China, and Germany, and, well, all over the place really!). I currently live in Lithuania with my husband and a plant called Spikey (which isn’t actually spikey at all…don’t ask).

I’m hopping mad about bunnies, so when I heard about Inktober, an awesome art challenge where thousands of people around the world spend the month of October making a new ink drawing every day, I already knew exactly what I wanted to draw for it! But shortly before the challenge began, I learned during a late-night trip to the hospital that I had a serious repetitive strain injury in my drawing hand. I’d literally painted myself into a plaster cast!

Still, unable to sit on the sidelines while Inktober continued without me, I cautiously embarked upon the challenge regardless. It wasn’t easy, and it probably wasn’t smart. I even had to take a break in the middle to rest my hand, but I finally got there in the end! I hope you like the results of my first Inktober, and if you’d like to see more of my work, then feel free to follow me @hoppingmadproductions on Instagram and Facebook!

Illustrator Imagines What Stranger Things Characters Are Doing Now, 33 Years Later

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

With the incredibly popular sci-fi TV series Stranger Things back on our screens, Music Magpie has fast-forwarded 33 years to 2017 to give fans a glimpse of what main characters from the show would look like now, and what career paths they’ve taken.

Let us know, which career choice surprised you the most.

    More info: blog.musicmagpie.co.uk

    Eleven, 46, Fundraiser

    Age: 46

    Profession: Fundraiser

Hobbies: Vegan baking and Tarot card reading

Despite the horrors of her isolated, captive childhood, Eleven was able to overcome her demons.

After some very temperamental teenage years (and a short-lived punk phase), she opened up emotionally and blossomed, putting a stop to the unpredictable and occasionally dangerous unleashing of her abilities.

Today, she reserves her telekinetic powers for de-seeding avocados and rescuing the town’s animals, for whom she is the designated patron.

    Dustin, 46, Teacher

    Age: 46

    Profession: Teacher

Hobbies: Hosting dinner parties & mentoring

All-around good guy Dustin remains one of Hawkins’ most popular residents.

After several spells as class president, he tried his hand on the stand-up comedy circuit before returning to the town and settling as a teacher.

As eccentric and goofy as ever, he spends way too much of his time trying to pull the group together – listening to Lucas moan about work, pretending to like Will’s garage band and positively reviewing Mike’s distinctly average plays.

Barbs (In the hope she is alive), 51, Investigative journalist

    Age: 51

    Profession: Investigative journalist

Hobbies: Shopping with friends & book club

We’ve decided Barb somehow survived her ordeal in the upside-down, because we can’t bring ourselves to accept the alternative.

With her penchant for justice, Barb’s exposé on the disturbing activities taking place at Hawkins Laboratory elevated her to national prominence.

From there, her investigative reporting has taken her cross-country and spanned seven novels; but she always calls by her hometown if she’s in the area.

And though the 80’s are but a distant memory, go-getter Barb refuses to retire her oversized, bottle-top glasses.

    Will Byers, 46, Project Manager

    Age: 46

    Profession: Project Manager

    Hobbies: Band practise, political campaigner

Resilient Will’s terrifying ordeal in the upside-down pushed him to the very limits of survival.

It’s perhaps why he thrives in his role as a Project Manager, which he says is ‘pretty much a breeze actually, in comparison’.

He threw himself into the grunge scene in the early 90’s and never did put the guitar down, still championing his garage rock band ‘Demogorgon’ to this day.

    Mike Wheeler, 46, Event planner

    Age: 46

    Profession: Event planner

    Hobbies: Amatuer theatre, Sudoku

Imaginative and sensitive Mike was always the optimist of the group.

His knack for leadership and outside-the-box thinking has seen him rise to prominence as Indiana’s best event planner.

In his spare time, Mike is the only member of the group to (secretly) maintain an interest in Dungeons and Dragons, via a web forum he runs.

More publicly, he expresses his still-active imagination through leading Hawkins’ amateur theatre group, whose recent productions include the all-singing, all-dancing ‘A Day in the Upside-Down’.

    Lucas Sinclair, 46, Accountant

    Age: 46

    Profession: Accountant

    Hobbies: Building computers and DIY

Sensible and skeptical Lucas was often around to keep the group grounded. Practical and pragmatic, he always got on with the job at hand, particularly when it came to finding his friend Will.

The cynicism and stubbornness we saw in his attitude towards Eleven grew with age but serves him well in his rather dry career as an accountant.

Lucas’s tendency to tantrum when things didn’t go his way carried on too; coming to a head when Dustin beat him to become Class President in Junior year.

When he can be bothered to attend the group’s dinner parties, he never brings wine and always leaves the earliest.

Someone Is ‘Vandalising’ Streets With Pixel Art, And The Result Is Awesome

    Reading Time: 11 minutes

Johan Karlgren, also known as Pappas Pärlor, is a Swedish artist who creates interactive street art that makes his surroundings a lot more fun. Johan’s works are inspired by his passion – old video games, and that’s why all his characters that invade the streets are pixelated.

Pappas Pärlor’s pixel art can be usually found on our everyday objects, such as traffic signs, pipes, sculptures, fences and hundreds more. They are wisely incorporated into the functions of those objects which gives them new meanings while mixed with art. Scroll down to see them for yourself!

I Make Sculptures Of Gentle Monsters From Polymer Clay

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

I’ve always had a soft spot for the idea of “gentle monsters”. These little creature sculptures are meant to take things in nature that have always been considered “scary” and unwanted and present them as innocent and natural.

Each sculpture is made primarily with polymer clay, combined with other materials including wire, glass, moss and modeling paste. They are each painted by hand and sealed with satin glaze.

  • After Being Arrested For Drugs This Man Started Carving Skulls And Turned His Life Around

After Being Arrested For Drugs This Man Started Carving Skulls And Turned His Life Around

    Reading Time: 5 minutes

“I guess we are all a bit fascinated by death”, says Victor, carver of these beautifully macabre animal skulls.

Victor is from Transylvania, Romania, and started carving the skulls after being arrested for possession of drugs four years ago. “I started carving skulls because I was forced to quit many different substances at the same time. It became my way to detach and was the only thing that kept my sanity throughout that ordeal,” he says. “I had been given a wild boar skull by my friend, which I cleaned to calm my nerves. Then I had the idea to start carving it with an actual drill.”

Faced with a choice between prison time and a hefty fine, Victor chose the fine. Beginning with clumsy and improper tools he began to teach himself the intricacies of carving, perhaps unsurprisingly influenced by the black metal/doom and stoner soundtrack he chooses to listen to in the background. Bands like Sleep, Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats, Pentagram and Bongripper are particular favourites to help get him in the mood.

After a year he managed to get together the cash for a proper micro motor and bits designed for carving, and his designs really took off. He now has customers from all over the world buying his skulls. “I sell to people from all creeds and nations, there doesn’t seem to be a certain type of person that buys them,” he tells me. Surely however, there’s a certain darkness to the art that must suit a particular taste. I ask him if he knows if they are used for purposes other than pure decoration, occultist practices for example. “I can only hope,” he says with a laugh.

Victor gets his skulls from a variety of sources. “I usually scour the woods, road kill, flea markets, sometimes I get them from local farmers that raise and cut down their animals for meat. I usually buy the skulls off them with meat and everything on them, then I clean all of them myself.” Cleaning them is itself an intensive process, involving boiling, an air compressor and finally hydrogen peroxide baths to whiten them.

Next in the pipeline is a much larger sculpture, a complete horse skeleton. “It’s all going to be very intricately carved, with every rib and vertebrae including the skull,” Victor tells me. At over 4 metres it would make an imposing addition to your collection!

  • I’ve Made Some Whimsical Winter Scenes From Old Snow Shovels

I’ve Made Some Whimsical Winter Scenes From Old Snow Shovels

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

I’ve been working with old rusty tools for a couple of years now and love giving these discarded items a new life.

I use a plasma torch and hand cut custom designs into old tools. Some items will have other parts welded on as well.

Most of my work involves saws, but I also work with shovels, rakes, masonry trowels – and well, pretty much anything else metal that I can find at a yard sale!

    How snowbabies are made

Here’s a closer look that shows how little snowbabies are “made” – I hope it’s not too graphic!

Detail of the Toboggan scene with wire stick arms. Some of the blue paint was chipped and some was burned off by the plasma torch

A detailed shot of two players. I used a Craftsman saw medallion as the football, staples as part of the helmets and again, wires for the arms

    The tree swing

Not many people notice the squirrels right away, but this is one of my favorite designs!
