Hit the Ground Running With These Day-One Death Stranding Tips

    Reading Time: 5 minutes

In Death Stranding, the herculean task of reconnecting humanity is far from the only burden placed upon your shoulders. Piled on top of this metaphorical weight is the real-world heft of countless packages that must reach their destination. Tucked inside these parcels are food, games, supplies, medicine, data — anything that splintered citizens might need to feel like they’re truly connected to a wider civilization.

Like any pioneering journey, the first steps across this fractured America are uncertain. Hoofing precious cargo across rough terrain can be challenging, so we’ve gathered a handful of general tips and suggestions that’ll have you reconnecting people in no time.

    Delivery Tips

    • Once you have the resources to make multiple deliveries per trip, hit ‘em hard. Delivering requested goods will often unlock enhanced tools, fun cosmetic options, interesting plot points with survivors, and an increased chiral connection for that area. The stronger the connection, the more chiral bandwidth that’s available for online structures like bridges, roads, watchtowers, and more. These structures can turn previously arduous treks into simple trips, and it’s all thanks to you and other Death Stranding players making those deliveries.
    • Whether you’re delivering requested goods or lost cargo found in the wild, these will net you Likes that increase your reputation as a transporter. As this rating rises, your cargo capacity (among other things) will improve. Give a little, get a little!
    • Anytime you’re on the move, you should have an open order. Always have something on your back, on the bike, or in the truck. If you’re especially generous, steal a MULE truck and start loading it with all their ill-gotten goods for huge Santa Claus-style deliveries up and down the highway.
    • Speaking of the highway, auto pavers demand a lot of resources, but you’ll be rolling in Likes if you activate a section. As other players make use of the highly convenient path, you’ll receive notifications and Likes, yet another sign that you’re not rebuilding America alone.
    • Find a spot that needs a ladder or rope anchor? You could replicate your own at a base, sure, but also check out online postboxes, MULE postboxes (and MULEs themselves) and share lockers. The whole world is playing alongside you, so odds are someone tossed a ladder your way. The same goes for transportation – borrow someone else’s reverse-trike, but down the line maybe toss one of your own in there to return the favor.
    • Have too much stuff, but still want to grab more? Try locating a Postbox where you can securely stash items out in the wild, then return when you have a vehicle or more carrying capacity.

    Handling Your Cargo

    • When accepting deliveries, be mindful of how many items are in the order. Some requests may contain one lightweight object, while others could include a dozen hefty containers best suited for a vehicle.
    • Optimize your cargo load. Initially, this means being mindful of which items are stacked on your back versus attached to brackets on your shoulders and hips. Later on, use vehicles, pouches and other gear to efficiently balance your load.
    • Even if you can bear the weight, consider the height of all those packages. Cargo can poke outside of cover, compromising your position to MULEs, and ladders extend a bit higher when hung on your tool rack instead of on your back. Making sharp turns can also be tricky if you’re overloaded. Recklessness can lead to tumbles and damaged cargo.
    • L2 and R2 are lifesavers! Maintaining balance is key, but these steadying motions also let you regain stamina while in waist-deep water or during a steep climb.

    Battling BTs

    • Early on, avoiding BTs is crucial. The world just doesn’t have a surefire way to deal with them in a combat situation. So, keep your eyes on your Odradek scanner. It points ‘em out and spins like crazy when they’re near. Hold your breath and walk slowly to sneak on by. Successfully sneak by without an encounter and your connection to BB can improve too.
    • If you’re grabbed, you can break free or let them drag you into battle. Taking down one of the larger BTs will shower the area in chiral crystals and vanquish the whole BT zone for a short period. If you have the appropriate weapons, it’s a nice way to obtain crystals and clear out the area.
    • Have a speed skeleton or a reverse trike? You can probably outrun the encounter altogether. But if your bike is gobbled up, make sure to come back after the tar subsides – your goods will still be there.
    • Make sure you’re using the shower and restroom facilities when you stay in a private room. Believe it or not, your support team will, uh, make use of your time in there to create some handy items.
    • Finally, make those deliveries! You never know who might come up with a new way to combat BTs or make your life easier in some other way.

    Minding Mules

    • Watch for yellow poles. These sensors ping your package locations, revealing your location to cargo-obsessed MULEs. Avoid the poles at all costs, and get ready to break line of sight or hide in tall grass if you set one off.
    • Make use of scattered watchtowers (or make your own) to keep a vigilant eye out for MULE encampments. These guys want your packages, and they can sour a promising delivery mission fast.
    • Serpentine! Move unpredictably when outrunning MULEs, as their electrified spears can knock your packages loose. Same goes for vehicles, which can be temporarily decommissioned from MULE electrical attacks.
    • Bola to freedom. If you’re swarmed by multiple MULEs, lean on the Bola gun to bind up immediate threats. Don’t dally, though, as more MULE baddies are usually on the way.
    • If you’re about to raid a MULE camp for a mission (or just to take what you can), consider going in without any delivery cargo on hand. Bring weapons, but leave lots of space for that sweet, sweet cargo you’ll obtain by infiltrating their base.

In the scattered world of Death Stranding, it stands to reason there aren’t many occasions to meet up and discuss art, games, and shared experiences. Thankfully, for us in the real world, the apocalyptic imagery that fuels the game is used to pull us together rather than push us apart.

Fans are encouraged to visit Fractured Worlds: The Art of Death Stranding, a gallery in New York City loaded with behind-the-scenes production info, official artwork, and fan art inspired by the game. Get a peek inside the gallery with these photos, which I snapped from within its very walls:

The space is open from 11:30AM-9:30PM, November 6-9, with a limited number of walk-up guests admitted each day. Reserve your space by .

Here at Sony Interactive Entertainment, we’re excited to announce that we’ve partnered with RCA Records to release a full album for upcoming PS4 game Death Stranding. Timefall (Original Music From the World of Death Stranding) is named for the mysterious rainfall that affects all it touches, while its songs find their inspiration in the game’s narrative focus: Sam Bridges and his journey to reconnect a fractured society and save mankind from extinction.

SIE and Kojima Productions set out to find artists in many different genres whose music evoked some of the key thematic elements in Death Stranding. Each artist on Timefall spent time with the team at SIE, interacting with the game’s story and vibe, coming up with their own unique takes on connection, love, loss, and rebirth. Today, you can hear the first of these, from renowned Scottish anthemic electro-pop group CHVRCHES. After spending time with Mr. Kojima at Kojima Productions in Tokyo, the band were inspired to write an original song. We’re thrilled to share it with you, the first of several hits to come.

If you haven’t yet, listen to CHVRCHES’ song “Death Stranding” .

The album cover hones in on the mystery of the sci-fi, action-adventure game. Take a look below.

“Death Stranding” is only the first of a full set of original songs by notable musicians from a wide range of genres. Each track from Timefall is inspired by the message and world of Death Stranding. See who’s featured on the official artist roster:

    1. “Trigger” Major Lazer x Khalid
    2. “Ghost” Au/Ra x Alan Walker
    3. “Death Stranding” CHVRCHES
    4. “YELLOW BOX” The Neighbourhood
    5. “Meanwhile…In Genova” The S.L.P.
    6. “Ludens” Bring Me the Horizon

  • Death Stranding: Breaking Down the Massive New TGS Gameplay Video

Death Stranding: Breaking Down the Massive New TGS Gameplay Video

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

The mysteries of Death Stranding continued to unfold this week at Tokyo Game Show, where celebrated game director Hideo Kojima debuted a whopping 48 minutes of new gameplay, giving the most in-depth peek at the fractured world Sam Bridges hopes to save. Here are some details we noticed:

    Preparation Is Key

First, we see Sam likely preparing for a mission by picking his equipment and balancing his cargo. His loadout isn’t just attached to his back; he seems to meticulously equip his suit and to carefully select attachments for his arms as well. How these different attachments and options affect his capabilities in the field remain to be seen, but it seems like it’ll be worth it to get things just right before setting out.

    Plot Your Own Course

Before leaving the facility, Sam also takes a moment to examine the map, which can be shifted into a topographical view that takes all the area’s hills, valleys, and bodies of water into account. Players can place markers to plot a specific course, as well as prepare necessary equipment like ladders, anchors, and boots for the journey ahead.

You’re Not The Only One Exploring This World

While we’re pretty sure you won’t be bumping into direct contact with other players in this world, it seems you may come across things they’ve built or left behind.* There are clear signs of other travelers like yourself using equipment to cross gaps and scale mountains, making you the benefactor of their generous intrepidness. Be sure to leave them a like for their troubles — it’s not yet known what purpose that serves, but at least it will make them feel deservedly appreciated.

    Treat Yourself

Given the responsibility placed on Sam’s shoulders, both literally and figuratively, Death Stranding encourages moments of tranquility and recuperation. We see Sam taking some time to rest in the grass, with prompts for him to massage his shoulders, stretch his legs or sneak in a quick nap. He’ll stop to play a tune from a quest-given harmonica or bathe in a Recharging Spring, prompting the BB to respond with appreciative coos and likes.

    On The Move

Sam can move at different paces despite being loaded to the brim with cargo and equipment. We see Sam equip an “Active Skeleton” that lets him run faster and farther. He also pulls off some rather epic jumps despite his massive pack of cargo — getting around should be a lot more interesting once you acquire one of these. We can also see Sam steal a MULE truck for a quick escape, and later on, ride a motorcycle, illustrating that traversal in Death Stranding can take many forms.

    Lighten The Load

Sam can also equip a Floating Carrier: a hovering palette of sorts that Sam can pack cargo onto, and be pulled along behind him as he walks. This should make a big difference in terms of Sam’s capacity to transport goods, speeding up deliveries and allowing for more flexibility should he come across lost cargo he doesn’t want to leave behind.

That Floating Carrier Can Carry You, Too

Later in the video we see Sam hop onto his empty Floating Carrier to zoom down from his high vantage point and stealthily approach a MULE camp. This sort of speedy, convenient traversal hints at multiple ways to approach a challenge, giving Sam an even more efficient way of getting down beyond the rope and ladders we’ve already seen.

    Don’t Be A Drag

Sam finds himself in danger in the second half of the footage, when his sensor alerts him to nearby activity. We see him struggle to shift his weight and break free from the BT’s tar covered grip, and eventually be dragged into combat with a more formidable foe. If running isn’t an option, as it appears in this section of gameplay, then removing packages to keep Sam lighter during combat is. He’ll need to move swiftly to lob Hematic and EX Grenades (we’ll let you guess what those are made from) or use the Anti-BT Handgun from a distance. Should you survive, don’t forget to grab your discarded cargo.

    Make Meaningful Connections

Sam isn’t alone in the world of Death Stranding. We see him complete a couple deliveries throughout the new footage, one to return lost cargo and the other in which he approaches a larger facility and is met with a hologram version of one of its residents. Upon delivery completion, each facility representative greeted Sam to thank him for his trouble and allowed him to add their base to a larger sprawling Chiral Network. It seems these forged connections are at the heart of his journey.

Those are just some of the details we caught in the new footage. Did we miss anything? What stood out to you? Let us know in the comments, and prepare to take on the world of Death Stranding when it launches November 8 on PS4.

It fills me with joy to announce that , the latest project from legendary game creator Hideo Kojima, will be available November 8 on PS4.

In Death Stranding, play as Sam Bridges and traverse a ravaged nation to reconnect a fractured society and save mankind from the brink of extinction.

A special message from Hideo Kojima:

People have created “Walls” and become accustomed to living in isolation.

“Death Stranding” is a completely new type of action game, where the goal of the player is to reconnect isolated cities and a fragmented society. It is created so that all elements, including the story and gameplay, are bound together by the theme of the “Strand” or connection. As Sam Porter Bridges, you will attempt to bridge the divides in society, and in doing create new bonds or “Strands” with other players around the globe. Through your experience playing the game, I hope you’ll come to understand the true importance of forging connections with others.

Now, please enjoy the latest Death Stranding trailer.
