What’s that Pop Up? Your Activision Games Are On the Cloud

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

When we welcomed Activision Blizzard to Team Xbox a few weeks ago, we reaffirmed our goal of bringing more Xbox games to more players on more devices. To that end, we made a commitment to the European Commission to enable European Economic Area (EEA) gamers to play current and future Activision Blizzard PC and console games that they hold a license for on cloud game streaming services beyond Xbox Cloud Gaming.

We met this commitment in October, and are now reflecting these changes in four live service games that have an in-game software licensing agreement. While many of you may have already been streaming Activision Blizzard titles, beginning today, the next time you boot up Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare® II, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III, Call of Duty: Warzone™, and Crash Team Rumble ™ you will be asked to accept an updated Software License and Service Agreement.

The full terms of this agreement can be found here, but as we know you’ll be eager to jump into your game, we’re sharing that the change is a small one, reflecting the grant of a free license to EEA consumers that allows them to stream that title, via any cloud game streaming service of their choice that supports streaming the game, on any device they may own.

When you see this pop up, know that what you might see as a minor inconvenience is indeed a sign of us honoring commitments, and indicating that you, the players of these games, have permission to enjoy these titles in a way you previously could not.

This is the only time you will see a pop up of this nature. Going forward, these licenses will be incorporated into the terms of use when games are released.

Thank you for your continued support, and we hope you enjoy playing your favorite games, wherever you may be.

Halo Infinite – Firefight: King of the Hill Preview

Bip. Bap. Bam. Welcome to Firefight in Halo Infinite!

With the December Update dropping on December 5, the latest incarnation of Firefight will arrive in Halo Infinite—Firefight: King of the Hill.

Before we dive into the details, let’s take a quick look back at the long history of Firefight, all the way back to its origins…

    FIREFIGHT: A BRIEF HISTORY

Halo: Combat Evolved screenshot of a Forerunner beam tower near the start of the second mission, Halo

„It’s a mess, sir,” Staff Sergeant Avery Johnson said. “We’re scattered all over this valley. We called for evac, but until you showed up, I thought we were cooked.“

„Don’t worry, Sergeant,” Cortana replied. “We’ll stay here until evac arrives.“

The Master Chief looked up at the strange alien tower that was currently serving as a rally point for this group of Marine survivors who had made it off the UNSC Pillar of Autumn. There were only a handful of them, ammunition was low, and—as Private Mendoza’s voice came over the comm—it was clear that they were out of time.

„Heads up! I got a Covenant dropship headin‘ in, over here!“

The conceptual origins of Firefight in Halo can perhaps be traced back to this very moment, near the start of the second mission in Halo: Combat Evolved. After coming across a group of Marine survivors, you must protect them from waves of Covenant reinforcements before they can be picked up by Foehammer.

Firefight itself would debut in 2009’s Halo 3: ODST as a cooperative mode where you and up to three of your friends could put your skills to the ultimate test, experiencing Halo sandbox encounters in the form of a survival-based “horde mode” that was becoming increasingly popular in games around this time. No doubt, many of you reading this today will recall the late nights spent on the Alpha Site map attempting to get the Vidmaster: Endure achievement as you sought to complete your Road to Recon…

From there, Firefight would go on to take several different forms in subsequent Halo games. In Halo: Reach, players were given extensive customization options to edit many aspects of the experience, which was also available in matchmaking.

In Halo 5, Warzone Firefight was introduced as a pure PvE version of the new PvPvE Warzone mode. Eight players could come together on large-scale maps to unleash their most powerful weapons and vehicles against Covenant and Promethean enemies.

And then, Halo Wars 2 introduced Blitz Firefight and Terminus Firefight. In the former, players had to defend and control three zones from waves of UNSC and Banished forces; the latter, meanwhile, was more of a “tower defense”-type experience where up to three players could work together to defend their bases and a Forerunner tower, with Flood enemies added into the mix.

And so, the time has come for a new Firefight experience in Halo Infinite

    FIREFIGHT: KING OF THE HILL

Halo Infinite playlist image for Firefight: King of the Hill on Normal difficulty depicting Spartans fighting Banished on the House of Reckoning map

To delve deeper into this new incarnation of Firefight, we’re joined by Connor Kennelly, Technical Designer, for a Q&A breakdown.

What is Firefight: King of the Hill and how does it work?

Our take on Firefight is in many ways close to the previous iterations of Firefight you remember. You and three other Spartans will face waves of Banished foes until you prevail… or die trying. The experience is entirely PvE, so there are no other human players to sweat against—just you, your fireteam, and Halo Infinite’s awesome cast of campaign enemies.

When the game starts, a hill will spawn, and waves of progressively harder Banished enemies will try to capture that hill. Your job is to take the hill from them and hold it until you capture it. A Boss Wave, filled with tougher than usual enemies (and spearheaded by a named High Value Target or Boss), spawns once you’ve reached a certain amount of hill progress.

You score a point when you both finish capturing the hill AND defeat the Boss Wave. Then, just like in other Firefight iterations, you’ll get a brief respite to resupply your weapons and equipment, which only respawn in between hills. After that downtime, the hill will begin spawning in a new location, and the cycle repeats.

The Matchmaking modes will have exactly five hills for each match, and you’ll get a win if you capture at least three of them throughout the round.

The timer in the mode is technically unlimited, but games tend to run between fifteen-to-twenty minutes depending on how well your team is playing. We totally expect the speedrun-oriented folks to be competing for lowest time for each map, though.

Halo Infinite screenshot of the Unggoy High Value Target known as Bipbap running in a hill on the House of Reckoning map

So you get points by capturing each hill and defeating its Boss Wave. And it takes 5 points to win. How do you lose?

Well, the enemy team can capture the hill just like you can, so if you can’t hold the waves off, you can lose the point to the other team. And since there’s a fixed number of hills to play, you don’t want to lose that bonus XP, so don’t let them capture those hills!

Also, just like in previous Firefight iterations, death can wipe out your squad. More on that in a minute, but keeping everyone alive is very much a focus of this mode.

In past Firefight modes, players have limited respawns. How do respawns work in Firefight KOTH?

The matchmade version of Firefight: King of the Hill will NOT be using a pool of lives. When designing this mode, we read a lot of community posts on old Firefight iterations, and we saw a common frustration with matchmade experiences where players felt that matchmade teammates often “wasted” the team lives. To address this, we brought in an elimination mechanic instead. When a teammate is killed, they go down where they fell and are given a lengthy respawn timer—the duration depends on the difficulty you are playing. And if ALL the Spartans go down simultaneously, you’ll instantly lose the game.

Your teammates can bring you back to the battlefield immediately by reviving you, just like in Attrition, but as mentioned above, the Banished will be making hill progress the whole time… so you’re going to need to balance revives against the enemy capture progress.

The tension between going for a revive or contesting the hill has made for some of the most delicious moments in our internal playtests, especially on the Heroic difficulty where the respawn time is longer. Do you play it safe and give up some enemy hill progress to bring your teammates back, or does your Last Spartan Standing try to contest a Banished-owned hill alone and risk the entire game? I guess it depends on how greedy heroic you feel…

We hope utilizing revives will reduce frustration for the players that want to solo-queue but will keep the co-op sense of shared fate we loved in both survival Firefight and Warzone Firefight.

Halo Infinite screenshot of a downed Spartan in Firefight: KOTH

One last thing on the death mechanics here: since this pain point was mostly a matchmaking concern, we added Custom Game options that will let you use the traditional lifepool. We also have a separate option to turn off revives, so if your lobby wants classic mechanics or you just love roasting your buddies for wasting lives, we’ve got you covered! Because we do not have lives in the matchmade version, we do not have the old Bonus Rounds to earn extra lives. However, we think replenishing the lifepool is a vital mechanic for those endless runs like in ODST and Reach, so we have another Custom Game option that will let you replenish the shared lifepool if the Spartans win the point.

Season 5 is all about letting people play Halo the way they want to play, and we’ve tried to support that as best we can.

Why Firefight: King of the Hill instead of a new iteration of specifically survival-based Firefight?

“Firefight” encompasses a lot. Firefight is about surviving waves of enemies with your friends. It’s about tracking who’s alive and who’s dead. It’s about managing limited resources. It’s about Skulls ratcheting up the difficulty as rounds progress.

And, at the core of it, Firefight is about having your back up against the wall and coming out on top through teamwork.

So, when we wanted to bring that back-against-the-wall feeling to Infinite, we landed on the King of the Hill mechanic. The hill started out as a way to organize combat on big maps. It provided that “wall” your team put their back up against when the maps were particularly large. Plus, it brought the added bonus of letting us move that spot around the map so the experience was more varied within each game.

That was just our starting point. As with everything in game development, you learn a lot as you playtest. And sure enough, as we spent more time with the hill mechanic, we realized it was adding an unexpected dynamic to the experience. Players who ran and hid when a tough wave of enemies appeared couldn’t stay hidden and pick shots at enemies until they had thinned their ranks—since they couldn’t progress the mode without having at least one player occupy the hill, the Spartans had to band together to retake the point and begin scoring again.

Halo Infinite screenshot of Spartans being healed by a Repair Field while taking a hill in Firefight: KOTH

We really enjoyed “the flip” between attacking and defending that emerged from this dynamic, and we also enjoyed the additional cooperative moments this created. Some of the most fun we’ve had in past Firefight modes are when you’re completely overrun by the AI and have to scramble, and concentrating the AI squads in a way that demanded extra fireteam cooperation really seemed to enhance those moments.

Where it really started getting good was when we extended the hill code to let AI units capture them. Suddenly, there was tension when the enemy pushed your fireteam off the hill. The bar started ticking up. That drum sound played with each tick, letting you know the Banished were inching closer to victory. Your decisions were now constrained by time. Is pathing back to that rocket launcher you saw across the map worth the tradeoff on the enemy hill progress? Can you afford to let your shields come back up before contesting, or do you need to get in there now and buy time for your other teammates to arrive?

Even in the course of regular combat, when the Spartans have control over the field, the hill shapes how you play. Because a single enemy AI can contest the hill and halt your progress, the fireteam needs to work together to keep the zone clear to draw the Boss Wave out. We indexed into larger hill volumes on each map so that there are multiple fronts to defend. Coordinating with your team to sweep the firing lanes, rotating from one sight line to another as you cover a friendly revive, choosing when to send players out of the hill to return with a power weapon or snipe from a vantage point—these are some examples of the core decisions you’ll be making when you match into a game Firefight: KOTH.

To make a long story short: we love the extra decision-making, the additional cooperative elements, and the tension that the hill brings to the classic Firefight formula. We can’t wait to hear what you think when you jump into the mode tomorrow!

Halo Infinite screenshot of a Hunter in Firefight: KOTH

Are there other differences (besides the hill) from survival Firefight or Warzone Firefight?

Yes. The other major departure we made is how Skull difficulty modifiers are earned and enabled throughout the match. In past Firefight, Skulls got enabled in a fixed order. We wanted to make the Skulls a bit more dynamic to adapt to how well a squad is doing in the round.

The rules for Skulls in Firefight: King of the Hill work like this:

    • If a team wins a point and nobody dies, one semi-random Skull gets enabled for the next hill.
    • Skulls stack over the course of a game. You can have multiple Skulls active if you keep winning points without any fireteam deaths. In matchmaking, the maximum is four active Skulls on the fifth hill.
    • Streaks can be dropped. Losing a hill to the Banished will disable your most recently enabled Skull.

We say a “semi-random” Skull gets enabled, because just like the classic modes, you earn easier Skulls before the harder Skulls. For example, the first Skull you earn will always be either Fog or Catch. But if you earn a second Skull, the pool expands to include Famine and Thunderstorm. The result is that fireteams who are able to earn Skulls will get a different experience from match to match, but the difficulty curve will still gradually increase in the same way as the match goes on.

We made this change because when we looked at how people talked about enjoying past Firefight offerings, we noticed two very different types of motivations, and the fixed-order Skull mechanics only catered to one crowd.

One type of player we saw was the challenge hound. They want to be pushed. They want to feel overwhelmed. They want their squad to really go through fire and flame because earned victory is all the sweeter. The fixed-order Skulls gave these players a foe worthy of their blade, since they were guaranteed to run into some satisfyingly brutal Skulls by the end of each round.

We landed on the “streak” nature of the mechanic as something to enhance the experience for these types of players. It feels great to have your Skull streak on the line when the Boss Wave shows up in the fourth hill and you really need to grit your teeth and keep your teammates alive without losing the point.

Halo Infinite screenshot of a Brute Chieftain and Brute Warrior in a hill on the House of Reckoning

The other type of player we saw plays Firefight for a very different reason. These folks look to Firefight as an escape from the sweat of multiplayer. And while they do not want it to be so easy that it’s boring, they really just want to kick back with their friends and shoot the breeze while they shoot some aliens.

Unavoidable Skulls, especially the tough ones like Black Eye and Blind, cut against this player type. They make you focus 110% on the game by raising the stakes, but that can actually take the focus away from what motivates these players—having a relaxing time with their friends. We landed on the no-death mechanic as a means of keeping Skulls out of the way for these types of players, since players who are just around to goof off will naturally accumulate some deaths in regular gameplay (and therefore won’t encounter Skulls). In this way, the game tries to match whatever energy your lobby is bringing.

Since we saw PvE as a way to build on that “party shooter” vibe that brings people together and makes Halo feel so unique, we wanted to make a change to support this group without sacrificing challenge for the players who wanted it. The goal here is to give players that care about challenge something to strive for as a team, and at the same time to be mostly invisible to players who are just looking for a good time with their friends.

And finally, in the spirit of letting you play Halo the way you want to play—we have Custom Game options that will let you enable those legacy behaviors. You can use the Fixed setting to make the Skulls come on one at a time after each hill regardless of who got the point, and we also have a None setting that will stop the mode from enabling Skulls at all. That last option will let minigame scripters turn on Skulls with whatever logic they want using Node Graph. More on that in the Forge section below.

Halo Infinite screenshot of a node graph for bosses and Skulls

What Skulls are in Firefight: King of the Hill?

The Skulls available in this mode are as follows:

    • Fog – disables motion tracker.
    • Catch – AI enemies throw and drop more grenades.
    • Famine – weapons dropped by AI enemies have half the ammo they normally would.
    • Thunderstorm – upgrades the rank of most AI enemies.
    • Mythic – AI enemies have significantly increased health.
    • Black Eye – your shields only recharge when you melee enemies.

Additionally, there is a (very) small chance you’ll get one of the following Skulls enabled at the start of a round. These Skulls don’t increase the difficulty, but they do make for some fun moments!

    • Boom – doubles explosion radius.
    • Cowbell – acceleration from explosions is increased.
    • Grunt Birthday Party – Grunt headshots lead to glorious celebrations.
    • Bandana – grants unlimited ammo and grenades, and removes equipment cooldown.
    • IWHBYD – rare combat dialogue becomes more common, and vice versa.

Note: the Blind Skull, which hides first-person HUD elements and view-models, is not in the pool for the mode, but it is available to Custom Games via Node Graph scripting.

TL;DR on the Firefight: KOTH differences from survival Firefight:

    • Players get points by capturing a hill and killing the Boss Wave for that hill, not just surviving.
    • If the Spartans fail to hold the hill, the Banished will capture it instead.
    • No more shared lifepool; You have only one life, but your teammates can revive you like in Attrition. All Spartans downed at the same time will end the round instantly.
    • You can use Custom Game options to get classic Lifepool settings.
    • Players earn Skulls by winning hills without dying, and Skulls stack.
Halo Infinite screenshot of an Elite Warlord, Jackal, and Brute Chosen Warrior in Firefight: KOTH

How will Firefight: King of the Hill help me progress my Operation or Battle Pass?

In Matchmaking, you’ll get a small amount of Match XP just for playing. Additionally, you’ll get bonus XP for a win, which is capturing 3 of the 5 hills. Successfully capturing the fourth and fifth hill will each give an additional XP bonus.

Slaying Banished foes will award Personal Score throughout the entire round that will level up your Career Rank, and Skulls will also net players a stacking Personal Score bonus at the end of each round won for every Skull that is enabled.

What maps will I be able to play at launch?

We have nine maps available when Firefight: King of the Hill launches with the December 2023 Update, which includes three community-made maps, five existing developer-made maps, and the new House of Reckoning map from Halo Infinite’s campaign.

The nine maps featured in the Firefight: King of the Hill playlist are:

    • House of Reckoning
    • Behemoth
    • Deadlock
    • Launch Site
    • Live Fire
    • Oasis
    • Exiled (by Epetr0, SandoChokUN)
    • Kusini Bay (by Mr Kwatz)
    • Vallaheim (by HaiseOz)

What kind of Custom Game options are available?

We’ve mentioned some of the levers you can pull in Custom Games to change your Firefight: KOTH experience to suit your taste. We wanted to offer up a wealth of options to feed your Custom Game Browser nights and let you play Halo the way you want to play. You can decide what elements of the mode will be active; you can change how Lives, Revives, and Skulls are used; you can tweak hill capture timers, and even override which units spawn in each wave.

Here are screencaps of the many Custom Game options you’ll get your hands on at launch!

And for the Forgers out there, you’ll find that Firefight: KOTH is the most integrated with Forge and Node Graph scripting yet. You can set the mode to use the enemy definitions straight from your spawners and make the hills spawn in the fixed order, paving the way for linear, wave-based missions.

The Skulls we converted to multiplayer are also available through Node Graph to use in any game mode. And the AI Wave Manager nodes that we were able to get to players early with the launch of Season 5 is the same one we built for Firefight: KOTH. That means you’ll be able to hook into mode events to run custom logic when waves start or end.

For example, using the new Wave Type output pin, this sample script would run any time the mode starts a Boss Wave. Then it would pick two random units and send every Grunt in their squad into an explosive frenzy.

We can’t wait to see what horrors and delights you’ll inflict on all of us in the Custom Game Browser come launch!

    In the meantime–

    [*Phantom horn sound*]

Here we go! Next wave’s coming in. Get set, Spartans. This is gonna get hot!

  • How Composer Inon Zur Created the Soul of Starfield in Just Six Musical Notes

How Composer Inon Zur Created the Soul of Starfield in Just Six Musical Notes

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

“I think that the more classical tone is the more dominant one in our [score]. However, if you listen to the whole score, there are many areas where electronic and sound design elements are 50, sometimes 60, or even 70% of the score. The score is vast and there are many cues that are actually not what we call classical at all. I think the interesting thing is the combination that we created.

“At many points, you cannot really put your finger on what is sound design, what is electronic, and what is orchestral, because everything really is intertwined. Sometimes there is a more traditional accompaniment, or orchestral background, but then the instrument that carries the melodies is actually synth. And sometimes it’s the other way around; there’s more ‘sound design-ish’ elements, but the [main] instrument is classical.”

The result is a score that can slide from mood to mood, style to style, seamlessly – helped by the fact that it’s enormous, surpassing the five-hour mark. Of course, five hours of music is still a fair bit less than the hundreds of hours some players will put into a game like Starfield, meaning Zur’s other challenge was in crafting a score that can keep hitting its key themes without feeling overly repetitive.

“It’s about finding this balance between, ‘How can I create something new, but make it feel like part of the same family?’ There are many ways to go about it: you could change the timbre, you could change the tempo, you could create variations that are different enough, but still remind the player, ‘Oh, yeah, this reminds me of the theme’, but it’s not the theme, it’s something different.

“It’s like painting. If you add a little bit more grey or black, automatically, the painting feels more gloomy. And there’s a way to do it in music. It’s almost like drawing the picture and fine-tuning the colours and themes. In this way, you create environments that are different enough, on one hand, but then still part of the same DNA.”

  • Compete for the Skull of Siren Song as Sea of Thieves Season Ten Continues

Compete for the Skull of Siren Song as Sea of Thieves Season Ten Continues

    Reading Time: 7 minutes

    Summary

    • The Skull of Siren Song Voyage sails in with the latest Sea of Thieves content update, available November 16 and free for all players with Xbox Game Pass and across Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows 10/11, and Steam.
    • Race and battle against other crews to be the first to recover and deliver the mysterious and powerful Skull of Siren Song.
    • This update arrives as the second of three major new features that comprise the ongoing Sea of Thieves Season Ten.

The second major update in Sea of Thieves’ Season Ten has arrived! Building on the new content introduced with Guilds in October, this update unleashes a new type of World Event in the form of the Skull of Siren Song Voyage. These emergent, competitive Voyages pit crews against one another in a race to unearth and claim the titular artefact, all at the behest of the legendary Captain Briggsy.

    Crew Vs. Crew

The hunt for the Skull of Siren Song introduces a new competitive event to Sea of Thieves. When a Voyage begins, all players on a server will find a ghostly note pinned to their ship’s mast, offering them the chance to set off in search of this ancient and potent prize. If they accept, they’ll find themselves in possession of two maps directing them to the Skull of Siren Song Key and Chest – but the catch is that every other crew joining the Voyage will receive the same maps.

From there, players will have to battle it out to locate the Key and Chest on separate islands and bring them together to release the Skull of Siren Song within. Making things more challenging is the fact that once the Chest and Key are claimed, their locations will be broadcast to all other crews by means of map markers and eye-catching beacons on the horizon, leading potential rivals straight to the pirates who possess them. By fending off their foes long enough to unlock the Chest, players can finally get their hands on the fabled Skull of Siren Song.

Even then, the mission is not over as the prize must be delivered to Captain Briggsy. In this, the Skull is both a help and a hindrance: it contains tremendous power that can be used to bombard enemies with blasts of deadly soundwaves, but it also carries a heavy curse. On land, the Skull will summon Coral Skeletons to its defense, and at sea, it causes a ship’s progress to be considerably slowed, allowing rival crews to more easily close the distance.

The Voyage concludes with a race to Briggsy’s beacon to hand over the Skull, leaving a single crew to emerge victorious and claim the spoils!

    Race for Rewards

Fending off all other crews is no mean feat, and the rewards for delivering the Skull reflect that. The hefty pot of gold is just the start: you’ll also begin unlocking new Commendations that track how many times you dig up a Chest or Key, how many Chests you unlock and much more.

Compete in enough Voyages and you’ll earn exclusive rewards. With a Flag, Figurehead, Sails and Trinket on offer, you’ll be able to redecorate your ship to celebrate your victories, while Captain Briggsy’s Jacket and Mask present a more personal alternative to update your style. There’s even the coveted Composer of Siren Song Title awaiting pirates who truly prove their mettle in battle and complete all Siren Song Commendations.

    Fresh Fashions

Elsewhere in November’s content drop, a new update means new Pirate Emporium stock! This month, shoppers can get their hands on the Ravenwood ship set previously exclusive to the Season Eight Plunder Pass, plus the newly added Ravenwood Spyglass and weapons. As is traditional at this time of year, the Festival of Plenty musical instruments and pet outfits also make a return for a limited time. As always, the new additions are accompanied by a freebie that any pirate can drop by and pick up, this month in the form of the Angry Scribe Emote!

Over in the Outpost shops, the Gold Leaf set introduced last month expands to include some fine matching clothing, letting pirates flaunt their purse-liberating habits for all to see. And if there are outfits you wish you’d been able to keep while experiencing the three Tall Tales of The Legend of Monkey Island, this update introduces a little cosmetic incentive to play through them one more time…

Guilds and the Skull of Siren Song Voyage aren’t the only things on offer in Season Ten. Still to come, the third major Seasonal update will introduce Safer Seas: a new game mode allowing players to sail the Sea of Thieves in private for the first time, alone or with a single crew of hand-picked friends.

With no enemy crews present, Safer Seas will offer a more peaceful, more predictable gameplay cycle to help new players get to grips with all the systems on offer. It will also enable existing players to interact with the more PvE-focused aspects of the game without disruption, such as completing Tall Tales or fishing. At the same time, the reduced risk of Safer Seas will correspond to reduced rewards and slower progression.

Keep an eye on Sea of Thieves’ social channels for more information regarding Safer Seas as we get closer to its release. For now, Captain Briggsy is calling!

  • Create Your Own Guild and Much More in Sea of Thieves Season Ten

Create Your Own Guild and Much More in Sea of Thieves Season Ten

    Reading Time: 7 minutes

    Summary

    • Season Ten is the latest Sea of Thieves content update, available October 19 and free for all players with Xbox Game Pass and across Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows 10/11 and Steam.
    • Players will be able to create and join Guilds – allowing them to forge more meaningful bonds with friends, enjoy asynchronous progression and work together for exclusive rewards.
    • Guilds is just the first feature launching in Season Ten, with Skull of Siren Song Voyages and Safer Seas coming to Sea of Thieves in subsequent months.

Sea of Thieves very latest Season begins today! Season Ten promises to be one of the biggest yet, launching with a significant and socially focused new feature for our shared-world pirate sandbox. Expanding on Season Seven’s Captaincy update, Guilds gives players opportunities to strengthen the bonds they’ve already forged on the seas, while also building new and long-lasting connections.

    A New Way to Connect

Sea of Thieves Season 10 Image

Across different crews, time zones and even platforms, Guilds can unite a group of pirates under a shared identity and cause, and help them celebrate their accomplishments with shared rewards. The in-game Guild Chronicles even allow players to see what other Guild Members have been up to while they were away, furthering the sense of communal goals and adventures. Each Guild also allows for full freedom of expression, with the Guild Owner having full control over its name, motto and branding.

With a limit of 24 pirates per Guild, these groups still maintain a sense of intimacy and shared identity – and with pirates only able to join a maximum of three Guilds at any time, the focus is very much on playing with crewmates you know or will come to know well. We know that Sea of Thieves is a game best played with friends, and whether this be old colleagues or new comrades you make out there on the waves, Guilds will offer players a longevity of connection far beyond a single Sea of Thieves session.

    Shared Progress and Rewards

Sea of Thieves Season 10 Image

A Guild isn’t just for easier sailing with an expanded set of shipmates – it’s also a new way to earn rewards! When you’re sailing on a ship pledged to a Guild, you’ll contribute to its shared Guild Reputation. You can unlock rewards including special clothing themed to different ship’s roles, and with every 100 levels of Guild Reputation collectively reached, you’ll earn a level of Distinction that will upgrade your Guild Plaque and Guild Reputation cards. Keep raising that Guild Reputation and you’ll open up new Commendations to complete, carrying prizes that include the unique Unbroken Bonds ship set.

Pirates looking to maximize their Reputation gain – and get a little competitive edge at the same time – can even set sail as a Guild Emissary! Once your Guild has a few levels of Reputation safely secured, any Guild Member looking for a challenge can raise a Guild Emissary Flag at the Sovereigns’ tent and go seeking that nail-biting risk/reward Emissary experience. There’ll be a new Guilds Ledger too, so you can compare your skills with other Guilds and the most prolific will score even more enviable rewards!

    Level Up Guild Members’ Ships

Sea of Thieves Season 10 Image

You can’t sail for a Guild without any ships available, so that’s where pledging comes in: any Captain with an owned ship can pledge it to the Guild, and choose whether fellow Guild Members can take it out even when its owner isn’t around. The ship in question will keep all its usual customisation and decorations, so your friends will be able to fully appreciate your daring interior design choices.

Even better, pledged ships will continue to progress their Ship Milestones when their Captain isn’t present. If you’ve got a vessel that you’ve been waiting to level up, now’s your chance to let some friends help you on your way.

We’re thrilled to be adding such a deep and connective feature as Guilds to Sea of Thieves, and we hope that players will love being able to explore and extend their bonds with other pirates. Social play is at the heart of Sea of Thieves, with its best moments being those you share with others. Guilds will give players the tools to turn these memorable moments into long-lasting magic.

    New Cosmetics Storm into View

Sea of Thieves Season 10 Plunder Pass Image

With a new Season underway, there are as always 100 fresh levels of Renown to rack up and rewards to be unlocked! Alongside the allocations of gold, Doubloons, Ancient Coins and Seasonal cosmetics available for everyone to unlock, pirates who pick up the Season Ten Plunder Pass can work towards the electrifying Stormfish Chaser ship set and clothing to help them feel right at home in the heart of a hurricane.

The Pirate Emporium will also continue to enjoy monthly updates throughout Season Ten, starting with October’s shining Silver Sepulchre set. In a world as dangerous as the Sea of Thieves, you never know what kind of horrors you might find yourself facing. With this set designed for fearless slayers of the undead, you’ll have all the tools you need to make a stand against the darkness.

    Plenty Still to Come

While Guilds are sitting firmly in the spotlight for Season Ten’s launch, they’re not the only thing to get excited about. There’s a range of meaningful quality-of-life improvements too, including work done on hit detection and sword combat, Rowboats in a range of new colors and the ability to repair them, and a persistent player inventory when you rejoin a session. For the full list of updates, be sure to check out our latest release notes.

And the fun doesn’t stop with the October update, as Season Ten is all set to deliver new feature updates throughout the rest of the year. Once you’ve all gotten settled into your Guilds, you’ll need to be ready for the next big thing in November: the Skull of Siren Song Voyages, which involve a server-wide race to score a significant new treasure. Swiftly following in December will be the Safer Seas update that gives players a way to find their sea legs without disruption, so if you need an overview on either of these forthcoming features, catch up with our Season Ten Preview video and stay tuned in the weeks ahead for full details.

  • The Forge AI Toolkit is Going to Change Halo Infinite Forever

The Forge AI Toolkit is Going to Change Halo Infinite Forever

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

The numbers of players participating in Forge thus far is significant: 27 million custom matches; 2 million user-generated creations; 40+ user-generated maps have even been added to public matchmaking playlists;. These numbers are telling in that the health of the Halo Infinite community — in particular the Forge community — is incredibly strong nearly two years after release, and nearly one year since Forge dropped.

“It seems like every day on Twitter I see something new. Or at least once a week I see a pretty major map release,” says Schorr. “People announcing it and tagging me in those. I see a lot of it. And it’s not just ‘Hey, I made a box with a ladder in it.’ These are dev-quality creations.”

“Those 40 [user-generated] maps we’ve added [through Forge], each one is on par with our dev-quality maps and that’s what we’re adding into matchmaking,” Kennelly adds. “That’s like a six-month project for a lot of people. The fact there’s so many… we’ve had 24 to 30 maps from just the studio. The point is, we’ve already seen the community in the last 11 months produce even more maps than we’ve produced to date and they’re incredible and it just keeps going.”

All this points to an obvious influence that Forge can have on not just players, but future game designers as well – if you know how to use Forge, you know how to use just about any internal level creation tool. And now, coupled with the Forge AI Toolkit, it’s easy to imagine how robust some portfolios might become in the coming months. In fact, many Forge level designers are now employed by 343 Industries, including Kennelly himself.

“I know a lot of folks who got their start Forging in older Halos and learned basic level design. That can help make an amateur portfolio,” shares Kennelly. “My big interview here was, ‘Here’s all the stuff I Forged, the professional skills I have…’ It’s really cool to see that pipeline. I know folks that work at other companies that got started [in Forge] as well. It’s a cool way to get your feet wet in the [game] industry. What I really love about Forge is, specifically, you have an existing player base. If you go and make your game and engine, you can get maybe five or ten play testers. With Forge you can just put it up in the custom browser, you can get players, find other Forgers, and then your content can get a lot better. I’m super passionate about that.”

  • Hi-Fi Rush: From a Little Idea to a Very Big Surprise – The Exclusive Oral History

Hi-Fi Rush: From a Little Idea to a Very Big Surprise – The Exclusive Oral History

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

Hi-Fi Rush turned us up to 11 before we even knew what hit us.

In one of the year’s biggest surprise releases, Tango Gameworks – a studio that cut its teeth on the paranormal genre with excellent projects like Evil Within 1 & 2 and Ghostwire: Tokyo – launched Hi-Fi Rush and served notice that its talented group of game developers were much more than just “a horror game studio.” Hi-Fi Rush was brash, bold, colorful, and most importantly, fun!

This incredible project — which had been developed in secret at Tango for nearly five years — pleasantly knocked its custom-built guitar over our heads with its crisp, rhythm-based gameplay, excellent soundtrack, and memorable characters, all wrapped up in a unique world for us to explore.

Because of its “shadow drop” release, it bucked the trend of a preview circuit (announce, hands-on previews, etc.) so we haven’t had a chance to follow the game’s creation – until now.

Xbox Wire was given exclusive access to talk to the heads of development at Tango Gameworks to bring you this unique, behind-the-scenes look at the inception of an idea as it moves through the entire creative process, right up to its full release.

Throughout this piece you’ll learn how Game Director John Johanas first pitched his dream project to the heads of the studio, how Lead Programmer Yuji Nakamura helped create the initial prototype that would be the framework the team would follow, how the team arrived at the bold art design led by Lead Art Director Keita Sakai, and how Audio Director Shuichi Kobori helped blend an absolutely banging rock-and-roll soundtrack into the action-packed gameplay of Hi-Fi Rush.

We hope this small peek behind the curtain of game development will give you a deeper appreciation for the massive amount of work and dedication that goes into our favorite games. Please enjoy!

  • Sea of Thieves: The Legend of Monkey Island Concludes in ‘The Lair of LeChuck’

Sea of Thieves: The Legend of Monkey Island Concludes in ‘The Lair of LeChuck’

    Reading Time: 6 minutes

    Summary

    • Sea of Thieves: The Legend of Monkey Island reaches its grand finale with the third Tall Tale on September 28.
    • Players will accompany Guybrush Threepwood to Monkey Island itself in pursuit of the villainous Captain LeChuck.
    • Sea of Thieves is available free for all players with Xbox Game Pass and can be played across Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows 10/11 and Steam.

After players worked tirelessly to free Guybrush Threepwood from the magical machinations of LeChuck in previous Tall Tale ‘The Quest for Guybrush’, the time has come to strike back against his captor. In this third and final instalment of Sea of Thieves: The Legend of Monkey Island, you’ll venture to the titular isle and finally confront the nefarious Captain responsible for Guybrush’s recent misfortunes.

    Previous Pirate Perils

As the third Tall Tale in the trilogy, ‘The Lair of LeChuck’ is the culmination of everything pirates have experienced in The Legend of Monkey Island so far. This delightful crossover kicked off back in July, as players reached the glittering Caribbean shores of Mêlée Island for the first time. However, not everything was as it seemed, and a series of challenges and riddles led them to uncover the shocking truth: this version of the island was a Sea of the Damned illusion, a trap designed to ensnare Guybrush.

That first Tale ended with Guybrush’s fate left in the hands of Corina as she searched for a way to free him. Once she found it, players were thrust right back into the action, concocting a potion to burn away the mysterious fog shrouding the island and revealing more iconic locations.

With expanded access to Mêlée Island and its eccentric inhabitants, players could then embark on the journey to obtain three symbols of True Pirate Courage. This required a demonstration of bravado and mastery of all the most important pirate skills, but the reward was the long-awaited cure for Guybrush’s beguilement. Once he was freed, that left only one thing to do: pursue and confront the scoundrel responsible!

    The Voyage to Monkey Island

Which brings us here, to ‘The Lair of LeChuck’. After taking a few weeks to recover his strength and plan his attack, Guybrush is finally ready to take on his nemesis – with your help. Set sail once again into the Sea of the Damned and follow LeChuck’s trail to the fabled Monkey Island, but beware! Finding the dreaded ghost pirate will be no easy feat…

You’ll need to plot a way past the iconic Giant Stone Monkey Head, unearth three golden idols and delve into a maze of catacombs while seeking LeChuck’s lava-filled lair. From there, it’s a race to catch up with him before he can claim a final victory over Guybrush and Elaine, and put an end to his latest ruthless scheme!

‘The Lair of LeChuck’ provides a thrilling conclusion to the story set up in the first two Tall Tales with the payoff of a highly anticipated excursion to Monkey Island itself, as faces both familiar and new show up to speed you on your way. Good luck!

    Closing Out in Style

Of course, dramatic showdowns with legendary villains require an appropriately stylish look. Fortunately, the Pirate Emporium has been welcoming in new crossover-themed cosmetics to help you along.

With the new Legend of Monkey Island Sails and Figurehead, you can head into this confrontation making an unmistakable show of your support for Guybrush. Alternatively, you might want to check out the new costumes inspired by Kate Capsize, Herman Toothrot and Stan, letting you live out a wealth of Tri-Island Area roleplay dreams. Even if those dreams involve becoming a Previously Owned Vessels salesman. It takes all sorts.

If it’s equipment you need, you’ll be happy to hear that the Rubber Chicken with a Pulley in the Middle has found a new lease of life. Given a few tweaks, this one-time transportation mechanism will helpfully transport fish from the sea onto your ship in the form of a snazzy new fishing rod! Not bad for some vulcanized poultry.

So what are you waiting for? Guybrush is banking on your support to stop LeChuck’s plans, and you wouldn’t want anyone else stealing all the glory. All three Tall Tales comprising Sea of Thieves: The Legend of Monkey Island are available free for all players, and are live right now! Just head on over to Capsize Charters at any Outpost to get started.

  • Welcome to Forza Motorsport: From Forza Horizon to Falling in Love With Cars

Welcome to Forza Motorsport: From Forza Horizon to Falling in Love With Cars

    Reading Time: 9 minutes

Since the first Forza Motorsport launched in 2005, the Forza franchise has been about falling in love with cars and building community. As a co-founder at Turn 10 Studios, I had the honor of working on the very first Forza Motorsport and have been with the studio for 20 years. In that time, we’ve grown considerably but, through it all, a constant has been our love for cars, pushing the limits of gaming technology, and creating a racing community for everyone. With less than two weeks to go before we release the brand-new Forza Motorsport globally on October 10, we wanted to share more of our vision for the game, explain how Forza Horizon titles have informed our racing sim, and share our approach for both new players and our core community.

To start, we’ve been asked why we didn’t call this ‘Forza Motorsport 8,’ and it’s a fair question. From the beginning, we’ve designed the latest Forza Motorsport to be an evolving racing platform, with new content that adds to the experience of automotive entertainment through skill and competition. Last week we shared a little more about what players can expect with our evolving racing platform on forza.net. It’s due to this shift that we didn’t need a number in the title; we created a platform.

    Forza Horizon 5 Image

    On the Horizon

In 2012, our studio partners at Playground Games released the first Forza Horizon, putting their signature twist on open world racing while building within our ForzaTech engine. It’s safe to say their work has made the Forza franchise even better. A lot has happened since our last Motorsport title, Forza Motorsport 7. Playground Games released two incredible games, Forza Horizon 4 and Forza Horizon 5, we moved into a new console generation with Xbox Series X|S, we’ve expanded our platforms across PC, Steam and Cloud Gaming, and Xbox Game Pass has become the best value in gaming and is synonymous with Xbox.

We’re often asked about the difference between both titles within the overall franchise. Where Forza Horizon expresses its vision through freedom and exploration, Forza Motorsport focuses on competition and honing your skills – and both focus on accessibility, authenticity, and immersion in their own way.

As Motorsport’s roots are within racing simulation, we wanted you to be immersed as soon as you start Forza Motorsport. You’ll experience the beautifully rebuilt Maple Valley track in the 2024 Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray, followed immediately by the exciting Hakone circuit in Japan in the 2023 Cadillac V-Series.R. You can check out almost 18 minutes of initial gameplay of Forza Motorsport here to see for yourself.

Forza Motorsport has a rich history of championing accessibility in gaming, innovations like the driving line have opened racing to millions of players. Forza Horizon 5 focused on accessibility and inclusive design from the first stages of development. Their innovative support for American Sign Language (ASL) and British Sign Language (BSL) in Forza Horizon 5’s in-game cinematics was just one of their many accessibility features. All of us at Xbox embody the value that gaming is for everyone, and we’re proud that Forza Motorsport continues this tradition. Whether it’s the innovative Blind Driving Assists or One Touch Driving, thanks to the great work of our team and feedback from our incredible accessibility consultants, we’ve created our most accessible Motorsport ever.

    Forza Motorsport Image

    This is Forza Motorsport

Let’s talk a little bit more about what Forza Motorsport is at its core. We’ve used the period since our last launch to innovate, redevelop, and refocus on the very core of the game. The entire experience of racing at the limit, improving your skill, building up your car, and competing on the track have been completely rethought. Our goal was to create a live, connected, immersive, accessible, and ever-changing competitive racing platform that will evolve and grow with our community. We’ve created a more competitive, accurate, and rewarding racing experience thanks to huge, foundational improvements in our physics and AI – more than all previous Motorsports combined. If you know Forza, you will feel the difference immediately.

At launch we will have 20 tracks from around the world with multiple layouts, including 5 new-to-Motorsport tracks, and over 500 cars. And that’s just the start. All the cars, tracks, features, and innovations are highly focused on our larger vision. Our hope is that you find the 10 or so cars that matter to you, and that these cars change over time, evolving with you as you build them and hone your skills. Our game will grow as you grow your skills, and as you find your place in this competitive and creative community. In short, we hope that you will fall in love with cars through skill and competition.

We can’t wait to see you at the starting line. To everyone, welcome to Forza Motorsport.

Forza Motorsport is available October 10 on Xbox Game Pass, Xbox Series X|S consoles, Windows PC and Steam, and Cloud Gaming (Beta). Pre-order the Forza Motorsport Premium Edition in the Microsoft Store so you can pre-download the full game and play it up to 5 days earlier
