  • Microsoft Flight Simulator Releases Local Legend 16: The Short SC.7 Skyvan

Microsoft Flight Simulator Releases Local Legend 16: The Short SC.7 Skyvan

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

The distinctive Skyvan is a utilitarian workhorse in a class of its own.

    A TOUGH, MULTI-ROLE MACHINE

Microsoft Flight Simulator today introduced the Local Legend 16: the SC.7 Skyvan aircraft that has earned a legendary reputation as a go-to for the world’s toughest air transport missions. The airframe, affectionately dubbed
by some as the “flying shoebox,” has a long and storied history of hauling people and cargo into and out of short, austere airstrips throughout the world. It was conceived, designed, and built to carry the largest loads possible in the most demanding environments. Its boxy fuselage optimizes freight stowage while its large rear cargo door and integrated ramp enable fast, efficient loading and unloading. The high aspect ratio main wing and powerful turboprop engines give it exceptional short take-off and landing (STOL) performance. Its rugged tricycle landing gear allows it to operate from all types of airfields, including grass, gravel, and improvised strips.

    BORN OF PRACTICALITY

Short Brothers, based in Belfast, Ireland, began developing the Skyvan in the 1950s to create an aircraft that would prove eminently practical for the widest number of users. They carefully analyzed several cargo and STOL aircraft designs in use at the time and determined the base design would be an enduring standout: it melded a capacious, rectangular fuselage with a high-performance wing and powerful engines. The empennage consists
of a single horizontal stabilizer and two vertical stabilizers, one on each end of the horizontal stabilizer. The main wing is strut braced and houses two engines, one on each side.

The prototype of the Skyvan, powered by piston engines, took its maiden flight on January 17, 1963. Short Brothers then fitted the prototype with turboprop engines and flew it with the new powerplants for the first time in
October of 1963. The company manufactured a total of 149 aircraft (in several variants) until 1986, producing a total of 149.

    GLOBAL USE

Over many decades, operators throughout the world have used the Skyvan for several purposes, including passenger service, general cargo, specialty cargo, geotechnical applications, skydiving, aerial photography, air
ambulance, search and rescue, and oilfield support. Notable missions include operations from high altitude airstrips in Nepal, exploration of interior Indonesia, and carrying an antenna for an Apollo mission (from
New Jersey to Florida’s Cape Kennedy, not all the way to the moon). Militaries from nearly two dozen nations have even used the Skyvan for logistical support and several of the airframes continue to fly today.

Crewed by one or two, the Skyvan can carry up to 19 passengers, 5,157 pounds of cargo, or some combination thereof. The SC.7 measures 40 feet, 1 inch in length, stands 15 feet, 1 inch tall, and has a wingspan of 64
feet, 11 inches. It is powered by two Garrett AiResearch TPE-331-2-201A turboprop engines that each produce up to 715 horsepower and each powerplant turns a Hartzell 3-blade, variable-pitch propeller. The Skyvan
has a range of 693 miles, a service ceiling of 20,000 feet above sea level, and climbs at 1,640 feet per minute. It requires 1,581 feet for take-off and it can land in 1,860 feet. It cruises at 173 mph, has a stall speed of 69 mph,
and has a top speed of 201 mph.

    INFINITE POSSIBLITIES FOR ADVENTURE

The Skyvan has been expertly recreated in Microsoft Flight Simulator for simmers to enjoy throughout the digital twin of the world. Try your hand at landing on a remote beach in New Zealand, lifting into the sky from the side
of a mountain in Alaska or Borneo, or even exploring the Sahara Desert.

The Short SC.7 Skyvan comes with sixteen liveries including: Airliner – White, Military – Green, Military – Green Camouflage, Military – Grey, Skydive – White, Skydive – Clownfish, Skydive – Pink, Surveyor – White, and Surveyor – Red.

There are infinite possibilities for adventure and exploration awaiting in the Skyvan. It is available in Microsoft Flight Simulator today for $14.99. The sky is calling!

Microsoft Flight Simulator is available for Xbox Series X|S and PC with Xbox Game Pass, PC Game Pass, Windows, and Steam, and on Xbox One and supported mobile phones, tablets, and lower-spec PCs via Xbox
Cloud Gaming. For the latest information on Microsoft Flight Simulator, stay tuned to @MSFSOfficial on X (formerly Twitter).

  • Microsoft Flight Simulator Releases City Update VII: European Cities II

Microsoft Flight Simulator Releases City Update VII: European Cities II

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

A diverse and exciting selection of locations from throughout Europe awaits pilots with this latest release.

Microsoft Flight Simulator introduced City Update VII: European Cities II today which features notable locales throughout Europe: Sweden’s Stockholm, France’s Nice and neighboring Monaco, Portugal’s Porto, and Spain’s Barcelona and Madrid. This latest update to the vast and growing Microsoft Flight Simulator experience is certain to captivate and inspire.

The Microsoft Flight Simulator team and its partners captured these renowned cities in exquisite detail using recent high resolution aerial imagery, digital elevation data, and TIN (triangulated irregular network) surface modeling. This latest release invites simmers to choose their preferred aircraft to explore these vibrant locales, from the French Riviera to the skyscrapers of Stockholm.

    Simmers will enjoy:

    Stockholm, Sweden

Stockholm is Sweden’s capital and its most populous city, a national, regional, and global center of industry, education, finance, and culture. The city is built atop several low islands just inland of the Baltic Sea in the country’s southeast. Rich in heritage, the city boasts a vast array of architecture including Stockholm City Hall, the Scandic Victoria Tower, and Riddarholmen Church and surrounding Gamla stan (old town).

    Nice, France

Nice is located in southeastern France in the heart of the Côte d’Azur (Azure Coast) near the Italian border. Also known as the French Riviera, this region is famous for the deep blue color of the sky and the matching Mediterranean water. Nice lies at the intersection of the rolling hills, low mountains and the sea. From above, the architecture of Nice presents a tapestry of color, notably earth tones and terracotta. Pilots will bask in broad vistas as well as individual facets of the city, including Nice Cathedral, Place Giuseppe Garibaldi, and Cathédrale Saint-Nicolas de Nice.

    Monaco

Located seven miles to the northeast of Nice, Monaco is an independent sovereign city-state surrounded on land by France. It comprises less than a square mile of coastline nestled between mountains and the sea. It has one large beach, Plage du Larvotto, and two ports, Port Hercule and Port Fontvieille. Monaco is a showcase of architecture variety, from Medieval to modern. Notable locations include Fort Antoine Theater, the Prince’s Palace of
Monaco, and the Monte Carlo Casino.

    Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona, the capital of Spain’s Catalonia, is celebrated as one of the world’s most beautiful cities and is located on the Mediterranean Sea, just south of the border with France. Numerous architectural masterpieces (from the classic to the ultra-modern) are scattered around Barcelona. The list includes Arc de Triomf, the entryway to the 1888 Barcelona World Fair; La Sagrada Família, a renowned cathedral; and Torre Glòries (Torre Agbar), one of the most distinctive works of modern architecture in the world.

    Porto, Portugal

Located on the Atlantic coast of northern Portugal, Porto is the second most populous city in the country after the capital, Lisbon. The city originally sprung up during the Roman Empire as a vital trading port and has remained important through the centuries, both regionally and globally. The United Nations recognized Porto’s city center as a World Heritage Site and it, too, is known for its medley of architectural styles, including neoclassical, Baroque, and modernist. The sights from the air over Porto, most notably above “Old Town,” where the Douro River meets the Atlantic Ocean, are spectacular.

    Madrid, Spain

Madrid is the capital of and most populous city in Spain, located near the center of the country in the middle portion of the Iberian Peninsula. It is a major global center of industry, finance, culture, and international governance, boasting some of the most spectacular architecture in the world, both classic and recently built. It is well-known for its myriad neighborhoods with narrow, winding streets as well as massive skyscrapers. The sights to explore in Madrid seem endless, but include the Royal Palace of Madrid, Cybele Palace, and the Cuatro Torres Business Area, a modern development comprising the four highest skyscrapers in Spain and four of the ten highest in the European Union.

City Update VII: European Cities II is available FREE to all owners of Microsoft Flight Simulator today. Ensure that your simulator is running version 1.37.18.0 (or a more recent version), download City Update VII, and explore Europe in all new ways. The sky is calling!

Microsoft Flight Simulator is available for Xbox Series X|S and PC with Xbox Game Pass, PC Game Pass, Windows, and Steam, and on Xbox One and supported mobile phones, tablets, and lower-spec PCs via Xbox Cloud Gaming. • A Note From Ninja Theory – Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II is Out Now

A Note From Ninja Theory – Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II is Out Now

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Today we are proud and excited to launch Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II on Xbox Series X|S, PC, Xbox Cloud Gaming and Game Pass.

In Hellblade II, the sequel to Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, we see the return of Senua in a brutal battle for survival through the myth and tyranny of Viking Iceland. It is a game from the heart, where our small team of around 80 developers have crafted an experience that aims to immerse you in Senua’s world and story. Our bold mission as a studio is to ‘Craft Life Changing Art with Game Changing Tech’, by which we mean we aim to push the boundaries of technology and techniques in order to create a game, and an experience, that leaves you thinking and feeling.

Immersion drives our work at Ninja Theory, with our belief being that if we can immerse you in Senua’s Saga, we can take you on an unforgettable journey. Our belief is also that believability is the route to this immersion, and so our team has painstakingly worked to bring our reality into Senua’s.

The game is set in real locations in Iceland, recreated through satellite data and photogrammetry. Our characters are digital doubles of real people and their costumes first made as real clothing through historically authentic techniques and materials. And all our character animations starts life as real movement from our incredible cast on our performance capture stage.

It is not only our presentation that is based in ground-truth reference, but so to are the narrative themes in Senua’s journey – in particular Senua’s experiences of psychosis. Senua is a person who lives in an unshared reality. She sees things that others don’t, hears things that others don’t and has unique beliefs about the world.

In order to realize Senua’s experiences of psychosis in a truthful way we have, as we did on Senua’s Sacrifice, worked closely with our friends and partners in the world of neuroscience and lived-experience. Their generosity, openness and support has given us the opportunity to understand what living with psychosis can be like, in the hope that Senua feels like a real person going through a very personal mental health journey.

I’d like to take this as an opportunity to thank our team and collaborators for devoting themselves to Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II as a true passion project. I’d also like to thank you, our fans, for your support throughout the development of Hellblade II. It has meant so much to us.

Now, it is time to turn down the lights, put your headphones on and join Senua for, what we hope is, an unforgettable journey into Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II.

  • The Most Important Moments in Minecraft’s First 15 Years

The Most Important Moments in Minecraft’s First 15 Years

    Reading Time: 12 minutes

As Minecraft turns 15 years old, we wanted to take a look back. As one of the most important (and best-selling) games of all time, Minecraft and Mojang’s journey has been incredible to witness – starting as a one-person creation and blossoming into a truly world-changing proposition.

With that in mind, we thought we’d take you back over the biggest moments in Minecraft’s history, year-by-year:

    2009: Launching Classic Edition

On May 16, 2009, it all began. Inspired by the likes of Infiniminer and Dungeon Keeper, Markus ‘Notch’ Persson had begun work on what was initially known simply as “Cave Game” a week earlier, before settling on a catchier title: Minecraft: Order of the Stone. Then he was convinced to choose an even catchier title: Minecraft.  What came to be known as the Java Classic Edition lacked much of what we’ve come to know from the game – but the building blocks (pun very much intended) were there.

Classic would generate a world, and allow you to dig and build freely, creating your own geometric slices of paradise in its technicolor world. Over the course of the year, Classic would split into Creative and Survival modes, ushering us closer and closer to the Minecraft we’ve known for a decade and a half.

2010: Minecraft Gets Its Crafting System – Plus Minecarts and Multiplayer

By January of 2010, Minecraft had already amassed over 100,000 players – but some of its most fundamental improvements were still to come – not least making good on that “Craft” part of the title. A crafting system was added late that month, introducing the familiar wood-iron-diamond ‘level’ system for items, and changing, well, everything about how we played the game. Dig-loot-craft-repeat was born.

But that was far from the only major change. By June, minecarts had appeared in the game, changing how players could travel through their worlds and, in August, the first version of multiplayer in Survival mode popped up. So much of Minecraft’s popularity is built on playing with your friends, and this was the first time we could see a glimpse of how huge that would be for the game.

2011: Minecraft 1.0 Released – and the First Port Arrives

If you want a sense of how fast Minecraft grew, consider this. By January of 2011, the game hit a million players. But July, that had jumped to 10 million. And, to top it all off – all of this came before the game had launched its full 1.0 version. That came on November 18, 2011. What came to be known as Minecraft: Java Edition was released during Minecon 2011, bringing everything millions of players were already loving to an even wider audience – even an “ending” to the game with the Ender Dragon boss fight.

And we can’t ignore that 2011 also saw the game’s first-ever non-PC ports. Minecraft: Pocket Edition launched exclusively for the Xperia Play smartphone in August, followed quickly by an iOS version – from these small beginnings, Minecraft would spread across practically every modern gaming device over the years, becoming the phenomenon it has been in the process.

2012: Minecraft Gets Lego-fied, Comes to Xbox 360, and Gets the Pretty Scary Update

If you wanted to pinpoint the moment where Minecraft became more than just a game, look no further than when Lego officially confirmed that Minecraft – in many ways the brick-building hobby’s digital cousin – would become an official set. Lego Minecraft Micro World allowed you to build four cubic vignettes from Minecraft in real-life, complete with Steve and Creeper mini-figs.

In the world of gaming itself, 2012 was no less important. This year marked the first meeting of Minecraft and Xbox, as Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition launched in May, offering a console version of the game to millions of new players. This console edition became the basis for Minecraft’s off-PC future – from here, we’d see the game appear on almost every new Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo console over the years.

We also saw a landmark new update: Pretty Scary brought a host of new mobs to fight off, and also brought one of the most important blocks in the game’s history – the Command Block became the basis for some of the most impressive creations in Minecraft, adding a level of programming that would allow magnificent ideas to spring forth.

2013: The Redstone Update Changes Everything and Horses Ride In

If 2012’s Command Block was the start of something special, 2013’s Redstone Update was when it got really special. Redstone, a block that allows players to power various elements of the game, had already been introduced, but this update opened up a host of new opportunities. Redstone could now be used to power pressure plates, change how rail blocks worked, detect daylight and much, much more. From here, players began to experiment with how far Redstone could take their creations – all the way up to creating working 8-bit computers inside the game.

On the less complicated side of things, we also got the Horse Update, which changed the game in a more adorable way, allowing you to tame and ride the majestic, blocky beasts and travel your world in a new way. Notably, this was a major moment for how Mojang worked with its community – the Horse Update was inspired by a mod, Mo’ Creatures, and shows how the game has been worked on with the fans themselves (many of whom went onto be Mojang developers, too).

2014: Microsoft Acquires Mojang and The Bountiful Update Blooms

I might not even be writing this article if it weren’t for 2014 – when Microsoft saw quite how earth-shaking Minecraft had become and acquired Mojang for $2.5 billion. After two years of working closely together, the two companies came together to shape the future of the game, which has only continued to grow in the decade since.

In the game itself, the Bountiful Update represented an enormous improvement. Built over a full 10 months, Bountiful saw massive changes to the codebase of the game, invisibly improving everything about the experience – but it also brought floating islands, underwater temples, killer rabbits, and much more.

2015: Minecon Breaks Records, and the HoloLens Demo Wows

Since humble beginnings in 2010, Minecon had been bringing fans of Minecraft together to celebrate the game – and had subsequently become the home of some of the game’s biggest releases. Come this year, it had become a truly enormous affair – record-breaking, even. Held in London, Minecon 2015 sold 10,000 tickets, earning a Guinness World Record for the largest convention in history for a single game.

2015 also saw Mojang showing just how creative it could get with its ideas – the Minecraft HoloLens demo became one of the most talked-about E3 presentations of recent years. The mixed-reality headset could effectively create parts of a Minecraft world amid the real world around you, offering a perspective on the game no one could have imagined. While it never became a full product, it’s a brilliant evocation of how restlessly creative Mojang is with its game.

2016: Hitting 100 Million Sales, and Minecraft: Education Edition Launches

There was no doubt that Minecraft was already a worldwide concern, but 2016 saw its biggest cultural landmark yet – passing 100 million copies sold. In 2016, 53,000 people were buying Minecraft every day – and four copies were even sold in Antarctica. The game has now passed triple that number, but it was here that Minecraft truly set out its stall as one of the most-loved, most important games of all time.

Its influence was so strong, in fact, that 2016 also saw the launch of Minecraft: Education Edition (now simply Minecraft Education). Developed alongside Xbox Game Studios, this version of the game was designed to be used in the classroom, and has allowed kids to build collaboratively, learn from educators inside the game itself, and been updated to include worlds that help learning on Cyber Safety, natural history, and much, much more.

2017: The Better Together Update Unites Players, Minecraft Marketplace Empowers Them

For years, players had been able to get Minecraft on their consoles, but 2017’s Better Together helped make that all the more significant. This was the moment that Mojang began to bring platforms together, allowing anyone with the Bedrock Edition of the game to play together, no matter what device they were playing on. It was a gigantic step, and a true piece of Minecraft magic.

In the same year, Mojang doubled down on its commitment to its community with Minecraft Marketplace – a store that sells curated creator-made skins, texture packs, and maps. Effectively, it offered modders – a huge part of Minecraft’s success over the years – to make money from their creations, and opened the door to literally millions of more people to access their hard work.

2018: Update Aquatic Opens Up New Worlds

70% of Earth is covered with water, and while that ratio may differ in your Minecraft world, that’s still a lot of space you might otherwise not see. Not so after Update Aquatic – the biggest update to Minecraft’s oceans saw new mobs, blocks, and mysteries added to the game’s underwater realms.

From dolphins and turtles to the only-slightly-horrifying Drowned enemies, there was a lot to play with under the sea, not to mention buried treasure, shipwrecks, and reefs to explore.

2019: 10 Years of Minecraft, and the Village & Pillage Update Storms In

A decade is a very long time in gaming, but it was just the start for Minecraft. The 10-year anniversary of the game went hard, not least with a beautiful map that acted as an interactive museum about the game itself – and a re-release of the Classic Edition of the game to show you just how far the game had come.

Looking forward, we also saw the Village & Pillage update, which populated your world in new ways. Revamped villages (and their villagers) now sprung up across the biomes, offering trading, jobs, and more ways to interact. But to combat all this loveliness, we also saw the addition of Pillagers, a new faction of bandit mobs who’d roam the map looking to spoil your good time. Also, pandas were added, which is only ever a good thing.

2020: Nether Update Takes Us Deeper Underground, and Minecraft Dungeons Arrives

The Nether had long been an object of fascination and terror for Minecraft players, offering a whole other dimension to the game. But the Nether Update changed this world of danger forever, adding new biomes and mobs that turned it from a curious, dangerous place into a true realm to explore in itself.

Meanwhile, Mojang also saw fit to release the biggest Minecraft spin-off yet – Minecraft Dungeons twisted the original game’s basics into an all-new action experience. In partnership with Double Eleven, this game offers a new story-driven approach to the Minecraft universe, transforming familiar items, mobs, and blocks into dungeon crawling essentials.

2021: Minecraft Passes 1 Trillion Views on YouTube, While Caves and Cliffs Emerges

YouTube has been an incredibly important part of Minecraft’s history, with creators across the globe enjoying and sharing the game, and becoming famous in their own right as a result. If you want a sense of quite how intertwined the two became, Minecraft became the first entertainment franchise to break through the 1 trillion views mark on YouTube. As YouTube itself put it: “If each of those one trillion views were just one second long, that would add up to over 30,000 years.” Please, take it from me, don’t try and catch up on all of it.

Inside the game, we saw an update so massive it had to be split into two parts. Caves & Cliffs was the most ambitious update Mojang had ever put together to this point, not only adding the expected new mobs, items, and blocks, but adding entire new biomes and overhauling how Minecraft worlds themselves were generated.

2022: New Default Skins Added and The Wild Update Bursts Forth

Skin-swapping had been easy for a long time, but good old default skins Steve and Alex were probably a little lonely come 2022. Enter Noor, Sunny, Ari, Zuri, Makena, Kai, and Efe – new default skins that let players express themselves more easily than ever while jumping into their world.

Meanwhile, the Wild Update included even more new biomes on top of 2021’s Caves & Cliffs, including the Deep Dark, a biome only found underground, replete with ancient cities to discover, and the terrifying, blind Warden enemy. Also: frogs!

2023: Minecraft Legends Offers Another New Adventure, and Trails & Tales Launches

Minecraft Dungeons was only the start. Last year, Minecraft Legends arrived to offer another new look at how Minecraft could be adapted. This action strategy game zoomed way out to offer you a bird’s eye view of the Overworld – and an army of mobs to help you protect it from Piglin hordes.

In Minecraft itself, the Trails & Tales update offered new means of self-expression in your world, not to mention added new stories underground with the addition of archeology in desert biomes. Count yourself lucky if you find the new, rare Cherry Blossom biome – and maybe find your way there on the new camel mob, which has space for you and a friend on its back.

    2024: Looking to the Future

And so we reach 2024, as Minecraft turns 15. You might think Mojang might want a bit of a break, but not so – they’ve already released the Armored Paws drop, and announced a massive birthday sale, but there’s so much more still to come. From the upcoming Tricky Trials update to secrets yet to be revealed, this 15th year is, somehow, only the beginning.

  • Microsoft Flight Simulator Releases Local Legend 15: The Dornier Do 31

Microsoft Flight Simulator Releases Local Legend 15: The Dornier Do 31

    Reading Time: 6 minutes

Microsoft Flight Simulator pilots can now fly one of aviation’s greatest icons of innovation.

    A MONUMENT OF AVIATION INGENUITY

The Dornier Do 31 is a jet-powered, vertical take-off and landing (VTOL), experimental military aircraft developed by the West German aviation manufacturer and historically renowned as the only jet-powered VTOL utility / transport aircraft ever created and flown. Although Dornier only produced three experimental prototypes and never entered serial production, the Do 31 remains an enduring monument of aerospace ingenuity.

    BORN OF COLD WAR IMPERATIVE

The distinctive Do 31 was born out of an ambitious Cold War initiative by the West German military to create an eminently resilient air force. An initial attack by the Soviet Bloc focused on air bases and runways throughout
West Germany, grounding their airplanes. To counter this threat, the West Germans hatched a plan in the early 1960s to create a new air force composed primarily of jet-powered VTOL aircraft. Such airplanes could operate out of traditional air bases, expeditionary airfields, or roads and highways, including Autobahns—any small stretch of concrete or asphalt would work.

The West German military’s plan included three VTOL aircraft: a fighter / interceptor: the EWR VJ 101; a surface attack platform: the VFW VAK-191B; and a large utility aircraft that could transport troops and cargo.

    AN ENGINEERING MARVEL

While helicopters had proven their utility by the early 1960s, especially for military operations, they were limited in both speed and lift ability. Developing a jet-powered transport aircraft, however, presented engineers
with tremendous hurdles like generating and directing adequate thrust to vertically lift an aircraft, transitioning it to horizontal flight, and then landing it vertically.

By the early 1960s, companies interested in jet-powered VTOL aircraft operation had proven the concept could work with experimental models. The Short SC.1, developed by United Kingdom aviation company Short Brothers, took its maiden flight on May 26, 1958. The Short SC.1 was followed by the first flight of the British Hawker Siddeley P.1127, the progenitor to the Hawker Siddeley Harrier, the world’s first production VTOL fighter / attack jet. Both were engineering breakthroughs that took years of development. The transport aircraft the West German military envisioned would be much larger, dramatically increasing the complexity. Dornier, famed for their flying boats and airliners, undertook the ambitious challenge in February, 1962, when the company and the West German military formally launched the project, designated the Do 31.

While Dornier had never built a VTOL aircraft, the company’s engineers had gained experience with short take-off and landing (STOL) exercises with their Do 29. That airplane, which took its maiden flight in late 1958, was an experimental, twin-engine, piston-powered, high-wing monoplane that used tilting engine-propeller systems to boost lift for take-off. The jet powered Do 31, intended to carry up to 36 combat loaded troops, 7,700 pounds of cargo, or some combination thereof, proved far more complex. It required the company to develop some of the most advanced aviation technology to that point in history including novel powerplant designs, high-strength airframe componentry, and an innovative flight control computer.

Dornier built three airframes with a group designation Do 31 E (“E” for “Experimental”): the Do 31 E1, the Do 31 E2, and the Do 31 E3. The E1 and the E3 were flying prototypes, while the E2 was a ground-based testbed.

The Do 31 featured a high-mounted main wing, a cruciform empennage, a capacious fuselage with a ramp-loading cargo system, and retractable tricycle landing gear. Its primary power source: two Rolls-Royce Pegasus BE.53/2 turbofan engines, each of which could produce up to 15,500 pounds of thrust. Each Pegasus was housed in a nacelle, one under each side of the main wing, and thrust from each was directed through four rotating exhaust ports called thrust vectoring nozzles. For complementary thrust and redundancy purposes—should one of the Pegasus engines fail mid-flight—Dornier crafted wingtip-mounted secondary thrust systems. Each wingtip featured a nacelle that housed four vertically oriented Rolls-

Royce RB-162-4D turbojet engines; each engine could generate up to 4,400 pounds of thrust, for a total of 17,600 pounds of thrust per wingtip. In total, the Do 31 was powered by ten engines capable of an aggregate 66,200 pounds of thrust. Only a few other aircraft in history have comprised ten or more engines, including Dornier’s Do X, a flying boat that was powered by 12 piston engines.

To provide control of the Do 31 throughout all its flight regimes, Dornier developed an extremely critical hybrid analog-digital computer, the DO-960. The aircraft simply would be too unstable to function without an adequate flight computer that could continuously solve a series of complex equations to maintain controlled flight. Digital computer technology and integrated circuit design were still in their infancy at this point and not fast enough to perform the specific types of solutions necessary (the microprocessor had yet to be developed). Dornier engineers solved this immense challenge by devising a novel computer system that fused aspects of analog calculation with components of digital computation.

The DO-960 maintained aircraft stability by taking pilot inputs and controlling flight surfaces, power output of each of the aircraft’s ten engines, the orientation of its thrust vector nozzles, and amount of bleed air ducted to nozzles in the aircraft’s tail. The Do 31 lifted off and hovered with downward-vectored thrust from the Pegasus engines combined with thrust from its wingtip turbojets. It then transitioned to horizontal flight through the rearward rotation of the main engine’s thrust vector nozzles.

The DO-960 remains one of history’s most notable computer developments and a brilliant example of technological innovation born of necessity. Although hidden within the confines of the unique aircraft’s form, the computer was one of the Do 31’s most crucial, and notable, features.

    A NEW BREED TAKES FLIGHT

After years of development and ground testing, the Do 31 took its maiden flight in early 1967. The first prototype of the airframe, the Do 31 E1, lifted off on February 10, 1967, powered by just its two main engines. In July of 1967, the Do 31 E3 took to the sky using all ten of its engines and performed a hover. The aircraft flew increasingly complex and advanced operations during successive tests in the months that followed including moving backward while hovering and rolls while in horizontal flight. The demonstrations marked not just the initial flights of a new aircraft, but the first operation of an entirely new breed of aircraft, a jet-powered VTOL transport. The Do 31 wowed spectators at airshows and set several flight records for its class—of which it was the only member.

Despite the successes and prospects for commercial adoption in addition to military roles, the Do 31 was abandoned in the early 1970s. The concept of a jet-powered VTOL Air Force proved too costly and complex to implement. It remains the first and only jet-powered VTOL transport ever to fly.

Piloted by two, the Do 31 had a range of 1,120 miles, a service ceiling of 35,100 feet above sea level, and climbed at a rate of 3,780 feet per minute. The aircraft cruised at 348 miles per hour with a top speed of 377 mph.

NOW AVAILABLE FOR MICROSOFT FLIGHT SIMULATOR PILOTS

The Microsoft Flight Simulator Dornier Do 31 has been expertly recreated for aviators to enjoy throughout the world. Experience the thrill of lifting off vertically, transitioning to high-speed forward flight, and then coming to a
hover with precision in this masterpiece of aviation technology. The sky is calling!

The Dornier Do 31 offers seven liveries: E1 Experimental, E3 Experimental, Olive Green, Green Camouflage, Marine Search & Rescue, Xbox Aviators Club, and Aviators Club. It is available today for $14.99.

Microsoft Flight Simulator is available for Xbox Series X|S and PC with Xbox Game Pass, PC Game Pass, Windows, and Steam, and on Xbox One and supported mobile phones, tablets, and lower-spec PCs via Xbox Cloud Gaming. • Microsoft Flight Simulator Releases City Update 06: Southwest Germany

Microsoft Flight Simulator Releases City Update 06: Southwest Germany

    Reading Time: 6 minutes

This latest update invites Microsoft Flight Simulator aviators to experience the allure of the cities of southwest Germany’s Baden-Württemberg state.

Southwest Germany is the latest exciting enhancement to Microsoft Flight Simulator’s immersive global experience with City Update 06. This update focuses on the Southwest German state of Baden-Württemberg, the nation’s third largest state in both population and area. The Microsoft Flight Simulator team and its partners selected seven cities that best represent this diverse and vibrant region of Europe: Mannheim, Heidelberg, Karlsruhe, Stuttgart, Esslingen, and Kehl in Germany, and the French city of Strasbourg, which lies just across the border from Kehl. The update also features Friedrichshafen Airport, Baden-Württemberg’s third largest airport.

Baden-Württemberg is one of Europe’s most geographically diverse regions. The state encompasses the famed Black Forest, rivers such as the Rhine, the Danube (including its source), and the Neckar, several lakes including Lake Constance, and rich farmland and vineyards. Its cities rank as some of the most prosperous and vibrant in all of Europe and include a juxtaposition of modern architectural marvels and centuries-old historic monuments.

The carefully selected cities of City Update 06 have been recreated using the latest high resolution aerial imagery and feature high fidelity TIN (triangulated irregular network) surface modeling.

In detail, from north to south:

    Mannheim

Mannheim is located at the confluence of the Rhine and Neckar rivers at the far northern end of the state. The city, the second most populous in Baden-Württemberg, is an important center of culture, education, and commerce, and boasts 23 universities and 30 research institutions. The Mannheim region is the location of the development of some of the modern world’s most important inventions. These include the bicycle, the modern production automobile (Benz Patent Motor Car), and the first rocket-powered aircraft (Opel RAK.1).

Sights abound from the air over Mannheim, including the Mannheim Water Tower, the Mannheim Baroque Palace, and Fernmeldeturm Mannheim, a telecommunications tower.

    Heidelberg

Heidelberg is located eleven miles southeast of Mannheim along the banks of the Neckar River. It lies at the southwestern edge of the Odenwald mountain range on the eastern edge of the Upper Rhine Plain. The city is internationally recognized as a center of education and is home to Heidelberg University, Germany’s oldest university, founded in 1386, and one of the world’s most celebrated. The city is also home to several research facilities, including four Max Planck Institutes. Heidelberg is also famous for the arts, notably literature.

Heidelberg features several stunning architectural feats like Heidelberg Castle, Church of the Holy Spirit, and Old Bridge Heidelberg.

    Karlsruhe

Karlsruhe is located along the Rhine on the northern edge of the Black Forest near the French border. It is the seat of the German Federal Constitutional Court and the Federal Court of Justice. The city, the third most populous in Baden-Württemberg, has a unique layout comprising 32 streets radiating from a central palace tower that resembles a fan from above.

Set amid the stunning surroundings of the Black Forest and the Rhine, Karlsruhe is also home to some unforgettable architectural creations. These include the Karlsruhe Palace, Karlsruhe Botanical Gardens, and the State Museum of Baden.

    Stuttgart

Stuttgart, the capital of Baden-Württemberg and the most populous city is located near the middle of Baden-Württemberg along the Neckar River amid expansive plains, low hills, and swaths of forest. The city is a renowned center for the automotive industry and is home to the headquarters of Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, and several other industry giants. The city is also a global center of science and academic research and boasts eleven universities.

Stuttgart offers incredible vistas from the air like the New Palace, MHPArena, and the Stuttgart TV Tower.

    Esslingen

Esslingen is located seven miles to the south of Stuttgart along the Neckar River. Rich in history, the city dates to at least the Roman Empire. Esslingen began to flourish in the early Middle Ages and witnessed extensive expansion.

Surrounded by forested hills and vineyards, Esslingen is one of the most picturesque cities in Germany. It is home to hundreds of historic buildings including Esslinger Castle, the Inner Bridge, and Church of Our Lady.

    Kehl and Strasbourg, France

Kehl, the small town in western Baden-Württemberg on the Rhine River, lies on the Germany-France border and neighbors the larger French city of Strasbourg. With the Black Forest to its east and patchworks of agricultural fields to its north and south, the sights abound from above Kehl. Strasbourg and Kehl have strong historic ties. Strasbourg incorporated Kehl in 1678 and transformed it into a fortress. The ties endured the subsequent centuries and the two remain intimately related.

Strasbourg is a major international city and the seat of several important European institutions, including the European Parliament, the European Ombudsman of the European Union, and Eurocorps. Incredible sights throughout Strasbourg including the Strasbourg Cathedral, Place Kléber, and the Strasbourg Opera House.

    Friedrichshafen Airport (EDNY)

Friedrichshafen Airport (EDNY), also called Bodensee Airport Friedrichshafen, is an international facility located on the northeastern periphery of the German city of Friedrichshafen that lies less than two miles inland of the north shore of Lake Constance (Bodensee), one of Europe’s largest lakes.

Friedrichshafen is world renowned as one of the most important cities in the history of aviation. German airship pioneer Ferdinand von Zeppelin’s LZ 1, the world’s first successful rigid airship, took to the sky from a floating hangar on nearby Lake Constance in July of 1900. In 1908, von Zeppelin founded Luftschiffbau Zeppelin (Zeppelin Airship Company) in Friedrichshafen. The company manufactured a long line of well-known Zeppelin airships, including LZ 127 Graf Zeppelin. In addition, several other companies with aviation roots based their operations in Friedrichshafen, including ZF Friedrichshafen, Maybach, and Dornier, known for iconic flying boats
including the Dornier Do J Wal and the Dornier Do X. In 1915, an airfield was established in Friedrichshafen as a base for airships and one of Germany’s first airplane runways was constructed in 1918.

Friedrichshafen Airport is adjacent to the location of the annual AERO Friedrichshafen, one of Europe’s key general aviation conventions. The airport was hand reproduced for Microsoft Flight Simulator by iniBuilds to celebrate the launch of this update.

City Update 06: Southwest Germany is available FREE to all Microsoft Flight Simulator simmers. Ensure that your simulator is running version 1.36.2.0 (or a more recent version), download City Update 06, and explore the incredible sights of Baden-Württemberg’s cities!

Microsoft Flight Simulator is available for Xbox Series X|S and PC with Xbox Game Pass, PC Game Pass, Windows, and Steam, and on Xbox One and supported mobile phones, tablets, and lower-spec PCs via Xbox Cloud Gaming. • No Man’s Sky Orbital Update Introduces Space Station Overhaul, Ship Customization, and More

No Man’s Sky Orbital Update Introduces Space Station Overhaul, Ship Customization, and More

    Reading Time: 5 minutes

    Summary

    • No Man’s Sky free Orbital Update available to download today.
    • Space stations are now vast and varied in the all-new Orbital update for No Man’s Sky.
    • No Man’s Sky players on Xbox can now customize their starships.

Last month, all Xbox owners were able to try No Man’s Sky’s free Omega expedition whether they owned No Man’s Sky or not. We were thrilled to welcome so many new Travellers into our friendly community. This month, we’re excited to show all those new players what veteran players have come to expect by way of regular updates as we unveil the Orbital update, free for existing owners to download today.

Orbital focusses on an area of the game which has remained largely unchanged since No Man’s Sky launched on Xbox five years ago. It’s an aspect which every player encounters almost every time they embark on a new adventure – the ever-present space stations!

No Man's Sky Orbital Update Image Asset

Space stations have always been a vibrant and much-frequented feature of every No Man’s Sky star system and are a bustling destination for trade, equipment upgrades, missions, fast travel around the universe and endearing yourself to the locals.

The first thing to strike you about these news stations is their vastness. They loom ever larger upon your starship as you approach the docking entrance. Secondly, their procedurally-generated exteriors mean that you rarely encounter the same form twice. Upon initiating the docking sequence, the large, cavernous landing strip you traverse hints towards a much larger interior than previous, again with a wide variety of layouts.

No Man's Sky Orbital Update Image Asset

One of the new additions to the space station map which Travellers will no doubt race towards is the Ship Fabricator. For a while now, players have dreamed of the ability to create their own starships in their dream configuration. This new function enables you to combine parts of salvaged ships together in a near-limitless array of permutations to create brand new form factors. You may still need to scour the universe for that perfect S-Class though!

The envoys from the three universe guilds – Merchant, Mercenary, Explorer – frequent the new space stations and it’s always worth paying them a visit. Your standing with the guilds can be increased with donations of interesting artefacts from your travels, and a higher standing unlocks ever-higher gifts, cheap supplies and discounts, anything from free ammo and fuel to powerful equipment upgrades.

No Man's Sky Orbital Update Image Asset

Orbital also ushers in the concept of “Intervention Events” as part of freighter expeditions. Frigates that you have dispatched to the far-flung corners of the universe on lucrative missions can now call upon further instruction mid-voyage or even ask you to come to where they are to assist them in their objective.

As with all No Man’s Sky free updates, Orbital features a whole host of other additions and improvements, large and small. It is available to download from today, free for all existing Xbox and Game Pass owners. Our journey continues.

    Xbox Game Pass

No Man’s Sky comes complete with all 26 major updates up to and including Omega. Inspired by the adventure and imagination that we love from classic science-fiction, No Man’s Sky presents you with a galaxy to explore, filled with unique planets and lifeforms, and constant danger and action. In No Man’s Sky, every star is the light of a distant sun, each orbited by planets filled with life, and you can go to any of them you choose. Fly smoothly from deep space to planetary surfaces, with no loading screens, and no limits. In this infinite procedurally generated universe, you’ll discover places and creatures that no other players have seen before – and perhaps never will again. Embark on an epic voyage
At the centre of the galaxy lies a irresistible pulse which draws you on a journey towards it to learn the true nature of the cosmos. But, facing hostile creatures and fierce pirates, you’ll know that death comes at a cost, and survival will be down to the choices you make over how you upgrade your ship, your weapon and suit. Find your own destiny
Your voyage through No Man’s Sky is up to you. Will you be a fighter, preying on the weak and taking their riches, or taking out pirates for their bounties? Power is yours if you upgrade your ship for speed and weaponry.
Or a trader? Find rich resources on forgotten worlds and exploit them for the highest prices. Invest in more cargo space and you’ll reap huge rewards.
Or perhaps an explorer? Go beyond the known frontier and discover places and things that no one has ever seen before. Upgrade your engines to jump ever farther, and strengthen your suit for survival in toxic environments that would kill the unwary. Share your journey
The galaxy is a living, breathing place. Trade convoys travel between stars, factions vie for territory, pirates hunt the unwary, and the police are ever watching. Every other player lives in the same galaxy, and you can choose to share your discoveries with them on a map that spans known space. Perhaps you will see the results of their actions as well as your own…

The Reign of the Ant Queens

First up, let’s talk ants. Each of the three ant colonies in Grounded now has a royal leader you can meet, the Ant Queen, who can be found deep within their respective hills. You will face a crucial decision with each queen: to befriend or betray her with a delectable offering. The path you choose determines not only the unique rewards you’ll receive but will also shape how the entire colony reacts to you. But tread carefully – some decisions have ripple effects that might not be immediately obvious…

    The Backyard, Remixed

Ready for a backyard makeover, Grounded style? The New Game+ mode brings a thrilling twist to every corner of your backyard, heightening your gaming experience with unique challenges. Each playthrough morphs the backyard in astonishing ways, introducing a multitude of new system enhancements. Accessing this mode isn’t a walk in the yard – you’ll need to conquer the Broodmother, Mantis, Wasp Queen, and emerge victorious in the Javamatic fight. After defeating those bosses, players can choose to leap into an alternate dimension courtesy of Wendell’s new creation, the REMIX.R. Expect different creature spawns, tougher bosses, and a host of eerie anomalies and hidden secrets in these otherworldly dimensions.

In a remixed yard, be prepared to face creatures infused with the essence of Raw Science. These beasts aren’t just tougher – they’re quicker, stronger, and have unique abilities that elevate the challenge. But fear not! Defeating these infused creatures rewards you with special trinkets, also infused with Raw Science. These trinkets come with random, unique properties, offering a myriad of ways to enhance your character. Keep an eye out for Ominent Badges and new BURG.L Chip Trinkets as they too will have randomized properties to give you more options on how to build your character.

To get more powerful, you will need to purchase the Yoking Station from the ASL (Advanced System Library) in remixed yards. Here, you can level up your weapons to previously unimaginable strengths. Be prepared to scour these new realms for unique materials required for these upgrades.

Don’t forget to keep collecting molars, now hidden in randomized spots in remixed yards. Staying as mighty as the backyard’s inhabitants demands constant strength upgrades, and these molars are key.
