Blood & Truth: How to Script a PS VR Blockbuster

    Reading Time: 5 minutes

I’m Colin Harvey, Lead Writer on London Studio’s ode to action cinema, Blood and Truth. In the past I’ve worked across different media such as books, comics and audio.

My games work includes writing and narrative design for Rebellion’s Sniper Elite 4, as well as uncredited work on The Getaway 2 and the ‘lost classic’ Eight Days, both for Sony. I even have a PhD in video game storytelling (yes, really).

I got the gig on Blood and Truth because I’m fascinated by the possibilities of VR, both for the challenge of developing a storytelling language for this new medium and to work with actors on the mo-cap stage.

As this week’s marks the game’s first anniversary, I wanted to share with you some of those experiences. If you’re an aspiring writer or interested in learning more about the medium, this hopefully will shed some light on the work that goes into crafting a first person PS VR title.

Blood & Truth: How to Script a PS VR Blockbuster

Do… expect to join the party late

I joined the game part way through development. This is pretty common in terms of game writing. This can be a nightmare as you’re having to make a story work with pre-existing characters, locations and missions, but in the case of London Studio, there were loads of clever people at different levels of the organisation willing it to succeed. Working within that tight remit, I was given a lot of agency to work up the story.

Don’t… be afraid to rework the story structure (if you can)

Our remit was ‘Be the Action Hero’, so we knew we wanted to take the player and place them in the midst of action sequences familiar from Hollywood movies. This meant building an equally thrilling story that could facilitate these sequences. All the missions were already designed [by the time I joined the project], but, climax aside, there was some flexibility about playing with the order [they appeared in] for maximum impact.

Do… add your own spin on your chosen genre

We wanted to reference action cinema greats, but obviously make our own mark on the genre.

We gave our characters a unique spin so they weren’t stereotypes, giving them these interesting back stories. As a result, we ended up with a very diverse cast. [As an example, we had] really interesting, positive female role models in this story. The kid sister is the brains of the operation, you’ve got the indomitable mum character. How often do you see a mum in videogames?

Don’t… treat narrative and gameplay as two separate development pillars

You establish the narrative which sets up the gameplay sequence. That then dovetails nicely into the next narrative scene, and so on. Do it right and you’re progressing the story within those gameplay sections. The comparison I always use for people who don’t play games is it’s like a musical: you’d have some story, then a song, then some story. The best musicals move the plot along within the song.

Do… always consider your player’s point of view

VR isn’t like a film – we can’t cut to a close up or a long shot, everything is told from the player’s point of view.

We discovered, though, that we could get a similar effect by having a dramatic action cut across the scene, like when your kid sister Michelle sweeps into the scene to tell you your Mum’s been kidnapped by the villainous Tony Sharp. VR is more like theatre in that regard.

The POV is one thing we had to make the actors aware of when shooting their scenes during mo-cap. As you can’t guarantee where a player will look, everybody is potentially in close up.

Don’t… distract the player (too much)

Getting the balance right in terms of interactivity is key. We’d shot these drama sequences and worried the player didn’t have enough to do with their hands. But add too many interactive objects and the player doesn’t play attention to what’s unfolding.

Interactions need to be tied to the drama. The classic Hollywood comparison would be someone playing baseball. You’re using the bat while getting the info at the same time. Or the Matrix ‘kung fu’ scene: you’re learning martial arts while being told about the Matrix by Morpheus.

Do… look to your performers to bring something you didn’t expect

We workshopped the scenes with the actors first. Let them extemporise a bit. Sometimes we incorporated their improvisations into the script, so things looked naturalistic. For certain scenes that were central to making them work, because a lot is built on the interplay between the characters, how they spark off each other.

Do listen to your actors. We were blessed with a brilliant bunch of performers who would often suggest alternative ways of doing things, or even resurrect lines from earlier drafts! Working with an actor of the calibre of someone like Colin Salmon was extraordinary, especially as this is someone who’s always been at the forefront of new storytelling developments, and someone who’s equally at home with Hollywood as he is more experimental stuff.

Do… factor in last minute challenges

You can miss things. One critical challenge we had was a sequence when you chase the villain’s brother down a corridor. We realised that some players would just shoot him and escape. But doing so meant you didn’t get a piece of key information.

We couldn’t go back and reshoot it. That was literally a case of me writing something, going into the recording booth, recording the line, dropping that new dialogue with that key information elsewhere in that sequence. Voice over was our catch-all that covered what would have been a plot hole.

The above are observations I discovered over the course of the project. Given what we were doing was so new in so many regards, we’re pretty pleased with the results – certainly the fanbase response and critical response suggests we succeeded.

Going forwards we’ll be looking to tell more sophisticated stories that really utilise the strengths of VR. Sure we borrow from films and theatre, but we’re different from both those mediums. We’ve also assembled an in-house team of Narrative experts dedicated to exploring the possibilities of storytelling for VR, which is incredibly exciting.

  • Showcase your Weapon Skills with Blood & Truth’s Latest Update, Out Today

Showcase your Weapon Skills with Blood & Truth’s Latest Update, Out Today

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

We’ve been adding new ways to play Blood & Truth ever since our PS VR action blockbuster launched earlier this year. Game updates to date have included New Game+ and online leaderboards, as well as a Hard mode and Skeet challenges.

Today, we’re putting a different spin on things with the addition of five new Gun Skill challenges; each designed to test different aspects of your weapons handling and technique.

For experienced players, these present the perfect opportunity to jump back into the game, play in some surprising new ways and further develop your skills, while showcasing your mastery on our leaderboards. Let’s take a look at what challenges await.

    Quick Draw

Swap modern-day London for the Old West in this quick draw dueling challenge. Holster your revolver, approach your target, and be ready to draw and fire when they turn hostile!

Gunslingers with the reflexes required to defeat an entire posse will be rewarded with bonuses and a bronze trophy awaits any bounty hunter able to complete all duels in one attempt. And remember, in the Old West, not all opponents fight with honor, so be wary of ambushes between duels!

Pro tip: If playing with PS Move controllers, try fanning the hammer with your off-hand to boost your fire rate!

    Pistol Spinning

Players may have already discovered the joys of pistol spinning, and perhaps even developed a knack for it! If so, then good news – you can now put this impressive trick to practical use!

In this challenge, you activate targets using pistol spinning. Call up as many as you dare before stopping to shoot, but don’t let them time out! Lights will display your available targets, and track your hits and misses. Can you take out an eight target sequence in one go? Achieve this feat to earn a shiny bronze trophy!

Pro tip: If you’re struggling to get your spinning up to speed, try twirling the gun in a figure-eight motion!

    Mechanism

Hone your multitasking skills in this timed survival challenge. Drive gears with levers to reveal time-boosting targets. Perform well, and you’ll unlock additional levers and higher-value targets!

While a keen eye and steady aim will serve you well in this challenge, the key to success will come from mastering control over the mechanism itself. Drive gears faster to uncover more targets, then slow (or even reverse) them to help you take a tricky shot!

Pro tip: As soon as extra levers become active, be sure to make use of them to dramatically increase your scoring options.

    Color Coded

All of you Blood & Truth veterans out there may already consider yourselves dual-wielding experts, but let’s be honest; you favor one hand over the other, right? Not an option in this challenge!

In this dual-pistols time trial, you must shoot color-coded targets with matching weapons. Successful hits build up your score multiplier, but any misplaced shots reset your streak, so check your targets!

String together a combo of 20 colored targets and a bronze-colored trophy awaits!

Pro tip: This challenge is all about getting into a good rhythm! Just don’t get so in the zone that you’re caught out by an unexpected color change!

    Hot Swapping

The color-coded targets make a return for this final challenge, but this time with an additional tactical twist!

Maneuver your way through this time trial with a rifle and pistol loadout, swapping weapons intelligently to respond to threats both near and far.

Test your skills to the limit in a range of combat scenarios; from vantage-point sharpshooting to close-quarters room-clearing!

Pro tip: Think tactically to anticipate weapon swaps. While crossing open ground you should be using the pistol, and once fortified behind cover, you’ll be needing your rifle.

    Top survival tips

    Stay on the Move!

    • Enemies are a lot more accurate, especially from a distance, so you have less time to peak out from cover to make your shots before you start taking damage – especially when facing multiple enemies.
    • Try to get in multiple shots before your enemies can react.
    • Don’t forget to shoot enemies on your way into cover.
    • Prioritize taking out enemies you don’t have cover from.
    • Remember, enemies are less accurate against moving targets…

    Watch that health

Not only are enemies more accurate, but you have less health to start with and your recovery is slower. If your accuracy is good – you’ll be fine, but miss shots and you will need to take cover. When your health is low, make sure you stay in cover and wait for it to regenerate before moving on.

    Careful with Precision Mode

Precision Mode gives you a massive advantage against enemies, but in the new Hard Mode you have less time to use it. Shooting your first enemy gives you a slight extension but you have to wait longer to use it again.

    • If you manually cancel Precision Mode before it runs out your cool-down is shorter.
    • Precision mode plus movement means enemies are less accurate and you are faster than them.
    • Explode-able items come with some free slow-mo so make it count!

    Make your shots count

With more accurate enemies and lower health you really need to get maximum bang for your buck.

    • Equip silencers to take out enemies without alerting their mates.
    • Use your second hand to support the gun to dampen recoil.
    • Unlock and equip your guns with sights and laser lines for big accuracy boosts.

We have added online leaderboards* for every mission in Hard Mode so you can see how you measure up to other Blood & Truth players from all over the world. Our best players from the development team have managed a point score of 7,186 on the Action Skeet Challenge. Can you beat it? Let us know on Twitter! • Ocean Descent

You’re also rewarded for hunting down all the toys, so make sure you’ve found:

    • Compass
    • Diamond
    • Knife
    • Gnome. (pro tip: there are actually two Garden Gnomes in the game. One is in the art gallery, and the other is in the safe house. This is the one you need. Don’t forget to pull the level on the slot machine twice… )

    • Toy Car (Pro tip: Remember to check all the vases inside the kitchen…)

    5) Alternative routes through missions

Our missions have alternative routes, which you can take with each path offering more enemies (which mean higher points for the leader boards), access to different guns with advanced mods, grenades or exploding targets.

For example, in the tower block level you can get your hands on a powerful semi-automatic rifle by using the ladder to get to higher ground. For the fans that are all about accuracy, heads up — there is a laser-sighted revolver if you stick to the left in the underground section of the hanger.

In the HQ mission, you can also switch off the lights in the underground tunnels and shoot from the shadows without being seen. Sneaky!

We have more free DLC lined up for Blood & Truth in the coming months, including additional challenges! Check back for more news soon.

  • How London Studio Built Blood & Truth’s Orchestral Grime Soundtrack

How London Studio Built Blood & Truth’s Orchestral Grime Soundtrack

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

The team here at London Studio set ourselves a unique challenge when creating Blood & Truth’s score. How do we make the game’s soundtrack authentically reflect its gritty, contemporary London setting, while also referencing classic Hollywood action scores?

What we came up with is a unique orchestral/grime mashup that brings together 80 world-class orchestral musicians and a host of top UK rappers, reworked by renowned grime producer Zdot. Today, we want to tell you how it all came together.

    Finding our musicians

Zdot has worked with the likes of “Godfather of grime” Wiley and chart-topping UK rapper Stormzy, and was the perfect choice to bring his grime production skills to the soundtrack. We then reached out to various rappers and were lucky enough to work with some of the most exciting emerging talent around in Eyez, Kamakaze and Ocean Wisdom (who is unofficially the fastest rapper in the world!) as well as JME — a legendary figure in the grime scene who runs Boy Better Know with his brother Skepta.

Orchestrally, we wanted a big, aggressive brass sound that works either as orchestral low-end or as samples in ZDot’s grime productions. To that end, we had 18 incredible players in Lyndhurst Hall at AIR Studios blasting away on horns, Wagner tubas, trumpets, trombones (tenor, bass and contrabass!), tubas and cimbassi.

It was properly exciting to hear them all playing together. We even added in bass trumpet for some cues — we wanted a swaggering, dirty sound to represent Tony Sharpe and this was perfect.

    Integrating music and gameplay

We first recorded a suite of music early in Blood & Truth’s development so that we could share the recordings with Zdot, who would then create additional music by remixing the stems from the session. This also allowed us to get the music into the game early and see how it would work across the various missions, making sure we could tightly integrate the music alongside the mechanics and narrative flow of the game.

In VR, music needs to work seamlessly with the action in order to avoid breaking player immersion, so the implementation of the music was key in making the player feel like an action hero. We used a number of techniques to make the music feel like it is scoring each individual player’s playthrough of the game.

One of the systems we created was called the ‘GritOmeter.’ This works by calculating the player’s flair during combat sequences. For example, spinning a gun on your finger then getting a headshot will push your style value up, but getting hit by an enemy will decrease it. The music then responds to your actions — dropping a bass line and some beats when you are being really gritty, and pushing the orchestral elements when under pressure from the enemy. This makes for a really dynamic soundtrack that fits individual playstyles and drives the action in the combat sections.

This idea of tight integration also led us to recording bespoke orchestral versions of some of the licensed music in the soundtrack. This allowed us to blend seamlessly between in-world music and offscreen music, helping to take the player deeper into the experience.

We were lucky enough to be able to do this on tracks by Diplo, Tim Deluxe and MJ Cole who were all very supportive of the concept. London-based Tim & MJ Cole even came to Abbey Road to see the orchestra performing their songs and they were blown away hearing their music transformed in this way.

    Some of our highlights

The soundtrack is full of fun bombastic tracks. If you want to jump right into the action, listen to ‘Swimming with Marks.’ This track really amps up the drama and is used for the climax of a chase scene towards the end of the game.

If you’re wanting something a little more intimate, then enjoy the string orchestra taking lead in ‘Dishonour Among Thieves.’ Or if you just want to enjoy some world class rap, give ‘Pedal to the Metal’ a spin, featuring Kamakaze and production by Zdot.

We have been working on the music of Blood & Truth for over two years and we can’t wait for you all to hear it! We’re also pleased to announce that the soundtrack will be releasing on vinyl late this summer in collaboration with Black Screen Records, so look out for more information soon! Until then, give the full Blood & Truth soundtrack a listen on Spotify right now.

Blood & Truth Out Today for PS VR, Post-Launch Content Detailed

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

It’s Blood & Truth launch day! After years of hard work, the team here at London Studio are thrilled to finally get our all-action PS VR blockbuster into your hands. If you have seen our launch trailer, you will know “Be the action hero!” was our mantra in the design of Blood & Truth. I see it when I close my eyes at night!

The game puts the player at the very center of an action movie where they are the hero. Alongside some incredible blockbuster moments, we also focussed on including some smaller touches to ensure that every moment feels as epic as possible.

Here are 20 moments in Blood & Truth that will make you feel like a true action hero:

    1. You can dual-wield a weapon in either hand and fire them!
    2. You can still grab ammo from your chest pouch and reload them, but for true heroics do it in slow-motion as you jump through a window or off a building.
    3. Reloading normally is for chumps! How about throwing your magazine in the air and catching it in your gun?
    4. Some weapons have extra interactions, which improve their performance. For example, put your hand over the hammer of the revolver to fan it and get a faster fire rate.
    5. Flick shut the revolver and sawn-off after loading them so you can fire quicker.
    6. Use your teeth to pull out grenade pins!
    7. There is so much fun to be had with grenades! You can ‘bake’ a grenade by pulling the pin before you throw it to get a slightly shorter detonation time.
    8. Roll grenades and bounce them off walls and they will detonate instantly if you hit your target.
    9. For ultimate style points, catch an enemy grenade and throw it back at them! Even better, activate precision mode and shoot the grenade before it lands to take them out! Awesome!
    10. You earn mods and gun skins by collecting Stars. These are awarded for mission scores, hitting hidden targets and finding collectables.
    11. We have silencers, extended magazines, sights and laser pointers that you can attach to the weapons in your collection!
    12. The gun skins are just for fun, but you can seriously show off by customizing your pump-action shotgun in hot pink or your revolver in classy gold!
    13. This deserves a special mention because nothing says action hero quite like the thunk of a grenade launcher. Particularly when aimed at a 4×4 or attack helicopter. You’ll unlock the grenade launcher when you play through the missions, but you can also unlock a sub-barrel grenade launcher mod for the assault rifle and semi-automatic rifle. You can quickly switch between the gun’s normal fire mode and grenade launcher with the Triangle button.
    14. If you just want to show off, hold down Triangle and flick your wrist to spin your gun on your trigger finger. Brilliant with a 9mm pistol, awesome with an SMG, totally off-the-scale with a pair of sawn-off shotguns!
    15. There are so many things you can do in the middle of a gun fight. Try turning up the car radio while taking out an enemy’s tire.
    16. Stagger an enemy with successful rapid fire and watch them clutch onto their injured limbs. Activate precision mode and land a lethal kill shot.
    17. Try out your music skills by cross fading and adding samples on the DJ decks in the casino!
    18. Getting headshots in precision mode will extend the time you are in it — so make sure you’re accurate!
    19. Give a thumbs up or your best hand gestures as you put a bullet into a gas canister.
    20. Knock down enemies in run ‘n’ gun sequences by driving your fist into their skulls, or for extra style, try pistol-whipping.

These are just a few of the epic touches we’ve included in the game to make you feel like an action hero — there are plenty more to discover for yourself when you start playing. We can’t wait to see you create your own action hero moments when you get your hands on Blood & Truth, starting today.

We’re also happy to confirm today that we will be supporting the game with free DLC post-launch, such as online leaderboards, new time attack and score challenges, New Game+, and an additional Hard Mode for those of you who want to up the ante.

So, get your hands on Blood & Truth, available starting today, and test your hand at the 20 tricks! We hope you enjoy the game and be the action hero.
