Five Ways to Make Your Mark in Democracy 4: Console Edition

Democracy 4: Console Edition is a political simulation game where you take control of a country and run it as you see fit. While in a position of power, you will be able to implement new laws, and take actions which will appease a group of voters, while angering another. The ultimate goal is to gain more votes than your opposition in an election and continue running the country in your vision.

    Picking a Country to Lead

When starting out in Democracy 4: Console Edition, the first decision you must make is which country to lead. You are able to become the President/Prime Minister of USA, UK, Japan, France, Canada, Australia, Spain, Germany, Italy, and South Korea. Each country has a difficulty rating out of 5, and it would help on earlier playthroughs if you were to stick to countries such as Canada, USA, South Korea, Australia, or Germany, who are all rated 2 stars and below. This will help you learn the game and be able to effectively lead 5-star difficulty countries such as the UK and Japan.

Surrounding Yourself with Cabinet Ministers who Share Your Intentions

As you begin leading a country, you will inherit the cabinet ministers who were there from the previous regime. These individuals will have their own thoughts and biases towards the direction of the government. It will be up to you to bring in new cabinet ministers which align with your values, should you choose, or you could try implementing policy changes with the existing cabinet and see how things go.

There are seven cabinet ministers in office and their departments are law & order, public services, tax, economy, welfare, foreign policy, and transport. How you deal with your cabinet ministers and policy directions can define your time in office.

    D4 screenshot

Introducing New Policies and Changing Existing Ones

Much like inheriting cabinet ministers from your country’s previous leader, the country you are leading will have existing laws and policies you can tweak and new ones you can introduce, depending on the direction you wish to take your leadership in. You can spend Political Capital, which you gain via your cabinet ministers. How much your ministers get behind your decisions has a big impact on how many changes you can make at any given time.

Should you decide to make a lot of changes from the start and your cabinet members not be fully behind them, then you may not be able to make the necessary changes as you may have intended to. Having your cabinet be behind your decisions is only part of the way of making your reign as leader a success, however. The key part of staying in power is to get people to vote for you and you need to keep them on your side.

Keeping Most of your Constituents Satisfied

While you may not have been voted in when your term first started, public opinion is the biggest barometer for success in Democracy 4: Console Edition. Each decision you make will positively impact one type of constituent, while negatively affecting another. It’s impossible to keep everyone happy all the time, but some opinions may be more impactful than others.

To ensure your campaign and time in office are a success, there will be financial backers who will try to influence your decisions by endorsing you further if your leadership is to their liking or threatening to remove their backing if they aren’t behind you. Those won’t be the only threats you’ll have to deal with, however.

As your direction for the country takes shape, there may be people inside or outside the nation you’re governing who wish to have you removed permanently. This could mean threats of disruption or even against your life. Between these and random events cropping up, such as headline news topics and discussions, there’s no shortage of ways for the public to support or oppose you.

    D4 screenshot

Being Re-elected and the Future of Your Country

If you make it to the end of your first term, it will then be time for elections. Your public perception up until this point will be pivotal in getting re-elected. The public aren’t only interested in what you’ve done so far, however.

As the election approaches on the horizon, you will be asked to confirm your manifesto. How you meet these targets can be the difference between winning or losing the election. Promise too little and it could make no difference but promise too much and not reach it could spell disaster in the polls.

Democracy 4: Console Edition will let you play out your ideas for a perfect government. Play in any way you wish. But will you be able to see your campaign through to the end and beyond? The polls are now open for Democracy 4: Console Edition on Xbox consoles. We wish you great success in your political future!

Democracy 4: Console Edition lets you take the role of President or Prime Minister in one of ten countries. You will then govern the country as you see fit, while trying to retain enough popularity to get re-elected. • Choose to lead one of the following countries: USA, UK, Japan, France, Canada, Australia, Spain, Germany, Italy, or South Korea
    • Select cabinet ministers that align with your vision for the future of the country
    • Introduce new laws or tweak existing ones to carry out your plans for change
    • How you deal with random events can either increase or decrease your favourability with the public
    • As election time approaches, lay out your manifesto and aim to deliver a campaign that will take you to victory! Democracy 4: Console Edition is the ultimate sandbox for testing out your political ideas. We all think that we could do a better job ourselves in running a country compared to politicians, but is that really true? With one eye on the budget, the other on the polls, and somehow finding time to watch out for terrorist attacks at the same time, you will find that staying in power while changing society for the better is a tougher job than you ever imagined. This is a strategy game, where the outcome of your policies and laws reflects on your success. If you want to abolish all public spending and all taxes, you can do that. It might work, it might not, depending on how you handle it. On the other hand, if you want to nationalise the railways, energy and water companies, cap CEO pay, ban second-home ownership, and put universal income in place, you can do that too. Democracy 4: Console Edition models the likely effects, short and long-term, of any action you take so you can see what kind of country you can run. Built on a custom-built neural network designed to model the opinions, beliefs, thoughts and biases of thousands of virtual citizens, Democracy 4: Console Edition is the state-of-the-art in political simulation games. Ultimately, Democracy 4: Console Edition is not a game about simply winning an election, but about running the country. Losing an election is just the endgame (unless you get assassinated). The real challenge is whether you can create a country you are proud of.

  • Steve Jackson Games’ Ogre hits PS4 and PS5 today

Steve Jackson Games’ Ogre hits PS4 and PS5 today

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

The official adaptation of Steve Jackson Games’ legendary and multi-award-winning wargame, Ogre, is now available on PlayStation. Bursting with mechanised warfare, this turn-based strategy game requires a lot of tactical choices, and even more calculated thinking. Based on the original board game created in 1977, this game will transport you into another time.

Here are five explosive reasons as to why we think you will love it.

    Hone your strategy

The strategy starts when you choose the units you want to be in your dream faction, where you want to position them, and which attacks are suited best for the fight you’re in. Then you’re leaving the success of these strategic choices down to the roll of dice, and all you can do is sit back and watch your plans play out in front of you.

Steve Jackson Games’ Ogre hits PS4 and PS5 today

    Set in the not-so-distant future

In a timeline not so different from ours, Ogre is set in the near future. There’s armed conflict where one specific type of unit, the Ogre, instills so much fear into even its allies. Ogres are AI-driven, cybernetic tanks that are so powerful, they equate to the same firepower as a battalion of tanks and infantry. Get ready to fully immerse yourself in this multi-award-winning classic that has been revived for PlayStation.

As the player, you’ll be taking command of hovercrafts, tanks, marines, infantry, and even the Ogres themselves, as you take part in an endless world war. Strive for domination on the irradiated battlefields of the (not-so-distant) future.

    Create your dream faction

With two different factions to choose from; you’ll be able to play as the North American Combine or as the Pan European Federation, and then build your dream faction from there. You’ll be able to choose from Light, Superheavy, and Missile Tanks, G.E.V.s (Ground Effect Vehicles), Infantry, Marines, Howitzers, and Ogres (Mark I – Mark VI) to create a different team each time you play.

If you’d like to keep improving yourself, you can keep perfecting the factions you build until you feel like you’ve figured it out the lay of the land. And then, once you’ve figured out that perfect sweet spot, you can keep using the same team, keep using the same, unbeatable faction each time. Make your ultimate unit and use Trains and Command Posts as you please.

    Super re-playable campaign

There are so many different ways to play Ogre, with multiple options to build your factions, different factions to choose from, and numerous scenarios to try. The AI in Ogre will constantly surprise you, to the point where no two games will be the same. There are also loads of different terrain types, including bodies of water, for you to carry out your battles on. Incorporate the terrain into your battle strategy, use defensive areas to shield your units from attack, or bodies of water to stall the enemy.

And of course, not forgetting all of those trophies to grab too! Add all of this to being able to perfect your dream unit over and over again, and you’ll be able to find new and exciting ways to play Ogre each time.

Gameplay that has withstood the test of time

For over forty years, the tabletop game has survived the test of time, enchanting players on both tabletop and then PC, and now we have brought it to life on PlayStation. This release is the ultimate PlayStation version of Ogre, including the expanded G.E.V. rules, which come from Ogre’s original sequel, for even more variety.

When the PC version was released in 2017, it was the first ever digital adaptation of Ogre since the game’s original creation in 1986, and since then Auroch Digital have been working hard to bring it to PlayStation, and also to make it the best it can be.

Discover the vast world of Ogre for yourself, it’s out now on PS4 and PS5!

  • The Colonists: Eine Stadt für Roboter?

The Colonists: Eine Stadt für Roboter?

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

The Colonists: Eine Stadt für Roboter?

  • Build an automated city for cute robots in The Colonists out on PS4 May 4

Build an automated city for cute robots in The Colonists out on PS4 May 4

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

If you love cute robots make sure you don’t miss The Colonists when it comes to PlayStation 4 on May 4. You’ll need to help the bots build their dream home by automating a whole city to meet their needs.

Think of city builders and you probably visualise gray tower blocks and industrial cranes. But The Colonists has a much friendlier face in the form of a grinning robot. The hard-working bots are the stars of the game so we hope you fall in love with them as much as we have.

Build an automated city for cute robots in The Colonists out on PS4 May 4

Each bot is defined by the specific job they have to fulfil within their community. We want to introduce you to a few of them as by learning what each bot does you will understand the basics of how The Colonists works.

    Carrybot

First up is Carrybot. This energetic bot’s job is to carry resources along roads to the various buildings. This means you’ll need to consider the layout of your roads and where you place buildings in relation to them in order to maximise this bot’s productivity.

That said, if Carrybots do run out of items to transport they’ll just start dancing on the spot. They clearly have a lot of energy and know how to use it to have a good time. You’ve got to admire that!

    Farmbot

Where do Carrybots get all of that energy? You can thank Farmbot for that. These bots till the soil and grow crops in it that go towards feeding the entire city. If there are no Farmbots then there’s no energy to power your bots. It’s that simple.

You’ll notice that Farmbot is fit for its job by taking the shape of a plough. There’s no better design for cutting lines in the ground, tending the orchard to make apple juice, and growing wheat for baking bread. Farmbot always looks happy to be outside in the fields. It’s not a bad life.

    Treebot and Lumberbot

At the start of the game you’ll be relying on wood to construct your basic buildings. That’s why you’ll need Lumberbot, who you send out into the woods to cut trees down and bring back logs for your supply. It’s easy work when you have a buzzsaw for a hand.

But you can’t keep chopping trees down and expect the wood to keep coming. You’ll need to plant more trees with Treebot so that you’ll have more wood later on in the game.Treebot can grow a variety of plants, including pine trees, palm trees, and even cacti! Look after nature and in return it will look after you.

    Smithbot and Smeltbot

Later in the game you’ll be able to graduate beyond wood and start using stone and metal in your construction projects. Once you’ve mined ores you’ll be able to bring them to the first of these burly bots, Smeltbot, who will use a furnace to turn ore into metal.

It’s then the turn of Smithbot to take that metal and bash it into a shape that you can work with. Don’t they look great with their aprons on? You’ll be able to greatly expand your settlement with the refined metals you’ll get from this pair, acquiring new bots and accessing even better resources.

    Captainbot

Ahoy! It’s Captainbot. This seafaring bot happily sets sail in its boat in search of new lands for you to harvest. This will become necessary as you progress and start needing rarer resources that can only be found overseas.

Not only will Captainbot discover new land, it will also bring back any materials found over there for you to use in your settlement. You can tell Captainbot loves its job by how much it’s committed to the look. Impressive hat!

These are just some of the bots you’ll meet in The Colonists. There are plenty more to discover, including those that go fishing, research new technology, and defend your base from attacking bots.

The Colonists is designed to be welcoming to newcomers to the genre with friendly tutorials and beginning stages that ease you in. But later on the complexity increases and fans of games like Factorio will find the familiar appeal of pursuing productivity zen.

  • Megaquarium Swims to PS4 October 18

Megaquarium Swims to PS4 October 18

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Hello, PlayStation players! We here at Auroch Digital and Twice Circled are excited to announce that our aquarium tycoon game Megaquarium is coming to PS4 on October 18!

It’s similar to theme park management games, except it’s all about building and managing your own underwater zoos. You’ll design the layout of your aquariums, decide which fish to exhibit, hire staff, and ensure your customers have souvenirs to buy and somewhere to rest.

While that sounds like a lot of responsibility, there are no time restrictions in Megaquarium, so you can play it at your own pace. Take on a challenge in the campaign or switch to the more relaxed sandbox mode. It’s perfect for when you want to lounge on your sofa after a hard day. You can even install underwater tunnels and go inside them in first-person mode to chill out as turtles gracefully swim around you.

This was something Megaquarium developer Tim Wicksteed experienced when he visited Plymouth aquarium, and he wanted to bring the joy it gave it gave him to his game. “We were inspired by their large marine animal tanks which are full of rays, sharks, and even a green turtle,” he says,

There are just under 100 colorful species of fish in the game, including the ones Tim just mentioned, as well as crustaceans, octopuses, seahorses, and jellyfish. What’s really cool is that they all look, move, and behave just like their real-life counterparts.

Each fish also has stats and care requirements that are scientifically accurate. We can see how this works for the Whale Shark, the largest fish in the world! To add the Whale Shark to Megaquarium, a 3D model needed to be created first, which was done using scientific drawings and photographs as guidelines.

All the distinctive features of Whale Sharks had to make it in. That includes their blunt snout, white spots and belly, and their wide mouths which they use to filter-feed on krill. With all that done, it was time to animate the Whale Sharks so they swim like their real-life cousins. These gentle giants get around by moving their tails from side to side – not up and down like dolphins.

The final stage was making sure all the care requirements and behaviors matched up. You’ll need a huge tank for Whale Sharks and it has to be rounded as they swim constantly. They also need very high water quality, so to keep them happy you’ll have to buy expensive filters — lots of them.

While doing research for Megaquarium, Tim was able to get a look behind the tanks in a real-life aquarium, where they keep all the equipment. “It was the inspiration behind the pump system in the game, which allows you to connect many tanks together in a shared water system.”

If you’re into engineering you can really get stuck into that part of the game. But you can just as easily become a fish nerd as you learn what the fish eat, as well as the plants and shelter they like inside their tanks. Megaquarium features about 90% of the fish you’d see in a real aquarium, so visit one after playing and you’ll probably be able to name most of the marine animals you see.

We hope that you have fun keeping visitors your happy and making beautiful aquatic displays in Megaquarium. If you learn a little bit more about the wonderful animals that live in our oceans as you do, then that’s a great bonus.
