5 Cool Facts You May Not Know About the Unreleased Super Nintendo PlayStation

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

The SNES-CD, aka Super Nintendo PlayStation, refers to an unreleased peripheral for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). The device and the format were to build upon the functionality of the cartridge-based SNES by adding support for higher capacity compact discs. The SNES-CD platform was developed in a partnership between Nintendo and Sony. Another partnership with Philips yielded some poorly received Nintendo-themed games for the competing CD-i game console instead of the SNES-CD. Sony independently furthered its developments into its own console, which resulted in the release of the original PlayStation, a chief competitor of the SNES’s cartridge-based successor, the Nintendo 64.

    5. Ken Kutaragi Started the Relationship Between the Companies

The relationship between Sony and Nintendo started when Sony engineer Ken Kutaragi became interested in working with video games after seeing his daughter play games on Nintendo’s Famicom video game console. He took on a contract at Sony for developing hardware that would drive the audio subsystem of Nintendo’s next console, the Super NES. Kutaragi secretly developed the chip, known as the Sony SPC 700. As Sony was uninterested in the video game business, most of his superiors did not approve of the project, but Kutaragi found support in Sony executive Norio Ohga and the project was allowed to continue.

    4. Development Started in 1988

Development of the format started in 1988, when Nintendo signed a contract with Sony to produce a CD-ROM add-on for the SNES. After several years of development, Sony introduced a standalone console at 1991’s summer Consumer Electronics Show called the „Play Station.“ The system was to be compatible with existing SNES titles as well as titles released for the SNES-CD format. However, due to licensing disagreements with Sony, Nintendo announced that it had formed an alliance with Sony’s rival Philips to produce the SNES-CD add-on.

    3. Two Companies Clashed

Tthe two companies conflicted over control of the licensing. Under their agreement, Sony would develop and retain control over the SNES-CD disc format, with Nintendo thus effectively ceding a large amount of control of software licensing to Sony. To counter this, Nintendo president Hiroshi Yamauchi sent Nintendo of America president Minoru Arakawa and executive Howard Lincoln to Europe to negotiate a more favorable contract with Philips, Sony’s industry rival.

    2. Sony Announced PlayStation a CES 1991

At the June 1991 Consumer Electronics Show, Sony announced its SNES-compatible cartridge/CD console, the „Play Station“. The next day, Nintendo revealed its partnership with Philips at the show – a surprise to the entire audience, including Sony. Although this was a clear breach of contract, Sony claimed they didn’t sue Nintendo or Phillips because of fear that such a lawsuit would delay the development of the DVD format which Sony and Phillips were collaborating on.

    1. 200 Prototypes Created

While Nintendo and Sony attempted to sort out their differences, approximately two hundred prototypes of the Play Station had been created in various physical forms, and software for the system was being developed. In 1992, a deal was reached allowing Sony to produce SNES-compatible hardware, with Nintendo retaining control and profit over the games, but the two organizations never repaired the rift between them. By the next year, Sony had refocused its efforts on developing its own console for the next generation of consoles.

Go behind the scenes of Star Wars: Battle Pod, a new arcade shooter from Lucasfilm, Disney Interactive, and Bandai Namco, in this special video from StarWars.com.

Star Wars: Battle Pod, with an enveloping dome screen, air blasts, and rumble, redefines the Star Wars arcade experience for a new generation. The first Star Wars game ever was an arcade shooter, released in 1983, and many other Star Wars arcade games followed through the years — Star Wars: Battle Pod hearkens back to that tradition. „We’re going back to our roots, so to speak,“ says Lucasfilm’s Matt Shell, „in developing this really exciting arcade unit.“ The game takes players through the original Star Wars trilogy, from the Battle of Yavin to Endor, with some surprises along the way. Combined with the cabinet’s features, it’s an experience that can’t be replicated easily. „You can’t bring an experience like that home,“ says associate producer Derek Williams.

Hyperkin to Release RetroN 5 on December 10, 2013

Leading video game peripherals company to release the RetroN 5 during holiday season.

Hyperkin has set December 10, 2013 as the official release date for the RetroN 5.

The RetroN 5 plays NES, SNES, Genesis and GBA cartridges all in one convenient console. The US release will coincide with the European release, with the MSRP set at $99.99 in the US and €89.99 in the European territories.

Hyperkin explains the delay in release was due to several key modifications made to the console shown at E3. The shell design was changed to allow for better ventilation, as well as accommodations to use the Sega Power Base Converter allowing users to play Master System cartridges on the console.

All versions of the RetroN 5 will come with an power adapter with four variable head sockets to fit multiple regions with the voltage ranging from 110 to 240 volts.

Hyperkin also confirms that the release date of October 31, 2013 listed on Amazon was a placeholder, and that Amazon has been contacted to correct the release date.

„RetroN 5 will be the most amazing classic game console.“ said Steven Mar, Hyperkin’s Executive Director. „We thank everyone who has been patient and supportive of Hyperkin during development.“

  • Retron5 Retro Console Preorders at Amazon

Retron5 Retro Console Preorders at Amazon

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Here we see reproduced the Retron 3 , the only console of its kind that allows you to play all the titles cartridge consoles NES , SuperNes , Genesis , Super Famicom and Megadrive.

The new version will include support for the cartridges of the Gameboy , Gameboy Color andGameboy Advance, its name was originally set up as Retron 4,  but given the chance to put an extra slot in the house more  Hyperkin has decided to add support for the Famicom (without the use of adapters).

Retron5 pre-orders have finally (about damn time) opened. Amazon seems to be the only place taking pre-orders. Hyperkin hasn’t announced an official release date yet, although Amazon lists October 31. They are taking pre-orders for both the black and grey models of the console.

For those of you who have been following this console, you know it’s quite highly anticipated and looks to be far better than any clone system released before.

For those unfamiliar, here’s a little info:

    • It’s one system that plays games for the following systems: NES, SNES, Genesis, Mega Drive, Famicom, Super Famicom, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance.

    • Two controller ports for each console will be built in with the system. It will also come with one wireless universal controller.

    • Outputs in HDMI and upscales for HDTVs. Early impressions and videos of this have been extremley postive. From the website: “The RetroN 5 will up convert the video signal to show clearer and cleaner images, with vibrant colors on an HDTV with a resolution output of up to 720p through the use of shaders. You will also be able to select the aspect ratio in our GUI, from the standard 4:3 to the HD ratio of 16:9.”

    • Features a user interface (dashboard. Somewhat similar of the PS3 interface in appearance, in my opinion).

    • Features save states. From the website: “Most games did not allow for you to freely save your games. The RetroN 5 will allow you to save their games at any point during gameplay, and will feature an autosave feature upon shutdown. You will be able to load your saves at anytime during gameplay.”

    • Button reassignment supported. From the website: “Users will be able to program the controller to assign buttons to their preference. In turn, the RetroN 5 will save these custom layouts, so that users will not have to constantly reconfigure the button configuration. This feature will also be available to people wanting to remap their buttons on their original controllers.”

    • 100% game cartridge compatibility, without lag.

More information is here. It may be a bit dated since this was from back when they first announced the console, but I figured it was the best site to link since it also featured some screenshots as well. http://hyperkin.com/…gaming-classic/ There is also plenty of info on Hyperkin’s facebook page.

I’ve been looking forward to this for a long time, and i’m extremley excited that pre-orders are finally open. For one console that not only plays all of these console’s games, but upscales them and features save states (either to the cartridge (if supported) or the console itself)…this seems like a great deal. And if you’ve been following the hype for the console, there is a good chance it could end up selling out. Hyperkin isn’t a huge company and this thing has a TON of pre-release demand (just check out the comments on the facebook page). I like the look of the black one a bit better, because it seems to be the traditional console color nowadays. But I opted for the grey model because the black console and controller seem like they’d be fingerprint magnets.

Preorder either color here at Amazon: http://www.amazon.co…ywords=retron 5
