If you’re new to the soulslike genre, Another Crab’s Treasure is a welcoming introduction. With built-in assist options, you can adjust to your play style. Speaking of these options, I’ve created a list of my top five tips and tricks for those new soulslike players who might need some advice – Let’s dive in!

Your Shell is your Best Friend

I mean duh, you’re a hermit crab. Your shell is the only thing standing between you and some seriously deadly enemies along your journey. A pristine shell is the sign of a coward! Don’t be afraid to get it beat up. If it breaks, there’s (unfortunately) plenty of new trash to replace it scattered all over the ocean. You take a lot of damage when you’re not in your shell, so blocking and parrying is gonna save you more than once.

Not only are shells great for defense, all wearable trash comes with a Shell Spell, powered by the ocean’s magic. Use a tin can to shock that sardine, or maybe a party popper to shoot some confetti in that lobster’s face!

Don’t be Afraid to Come Back Later When you’re Stronger

The ocean is a big place. If you find you’re stuck on a boss fight with no progress, you might need to take the L and level up some more! Find some nearby enemies, explore the ocean for items, argue with the locals and come back later. You’ll be surprised at the difference when you return. Remember, the game is meant to be difficult – don’t get discouraged by repeated losses!

You Don’t Need to Fight Every Enemy

For one, you might find yourself battling for longer than you’d like to. Secondly, enemies respawn. There’s plenty to go around and some just aren’t worth your time! Or maybe they are, depending how much you like to spear tackle crabs all day long. I won’t judge you for it. Okay maybe a little. But just like in classic soulslikes, you’ll be surprised by how many fights you can avoid entirely if you’re careful or quick.

Mix up your Playstyle

There’s almost always more than one way to approach a fight. If your current loadout isn’t working against an enemy, it could be that you just haven’t figured out their trick yet. Try using different Shell Spells or Adaptations, or equipping some different Stowaways – little creatures that attach to your shell and affect your combat ability in all sorts of ways.

Additionally, you might find a Shark Egg along your journey. These offer a rebirth of sorts, as using one lets you re-spec your stats or skills at the respective shop. If that unga bunga warrior build isn’t working out, try a magic-focused build instead!

If you’re Just Not a Glutton for Punishment – Try out our Assist Options

In Another Crab’s Treasure, you might come to find out that soulslike games aren’t for you due to the difficulty alone – that’s okay! Within the settings menu, you can find the assist mode. From here, you can toggle gameplay settings such as extra shell durability and reducing enemy health. Still too hard? Don’t worry, that’s why you can give Kril a gun. No really, you can totally do that. It’s a one-hit kill and looks as goofy as it sounds.

On top of this, whether you choose to use assist options or not, players will still have access to gaining all achievements! We welcome you to play at your own pace, with no restrictions. If the game’s difficulty is harming your fun, feel free to turn some of these options to make things a bit easier. It’s there for a reason!

For players who are still looking for a challenge, we’ve made sure that the default game will pack a punch. Or a pinch. There’s too many crab puns to count at this point. Another Crab’s Treasure angespielt: ein verspieltes Soulslike mit frischen Ideen

Die Entwickler bei FromSoftware haben ein ganz neues Genre geschaffen, als sie 2009 Demon’s Souls das erste mal auf PlayStation 3 veröffentlicht haben. Das „Soulslike“-Genre entstand und inspirierte Entwickler auf der ganzen Welt durch Chancen-Risiken-Steuerung, durchdachte Nahkampfsituationen und verbundenes Weltdesign.

Aggro Crab ist einer dieser inspirierten Entwickler. Kürzlich hatte ich die Chance, ihr Spiel Another’s Crab Treasure auszutesten, das das Genre auf neue Weise aufgreift. Das PS5-Spiel, das morgen am 25. April erscheint, tauscht düstere, zerfallene Königreiche gegen eine fröhliche Unterwasserlandschaft. Statt ominöser Geschichte findet ihr frechen Humor und viele augenzwinkernde Verweise auf Soulslike-Spiele aller Varianten. Während der Kern des Spiels die Soulslike-„Mechanik“ ist, kommen auch ganz neue Elemente hinzu wie die Möglichkeit, besondere Panzer mit unterschiedlichen Eigenschaften anzulegen.

Nicht wie andere Soulslikes

An der Oberfläche wirkt Aggro Crab’s Soulslike wie ein fröhliches, einfaches Abenteuer, das von Kinderzeichentrickfilmen inspiriert wurde. Unter der Oberfläche liegen aber Steuerungen und Kämpfe, die euch vielleicht von FromSoftwares Third-Person-RPGs bekannt sind.

Das Spiel fängt mit dem kleinen Schnecken-Protagonisten Krill an, der aus seinem Panzer geworfen wird, weil er seine Steuern nicht gezahlt hat. Nackt und verletzlich muss er in die Tiefen des Ozeans vordringen, um mit der lokalen Herrscherin zu sprechen, um seine Heimat zurückzubekommen.

Aggro Crab zwinkert euch dabei mit beiden Augen im ganzen farbigen Abenteuer zu. Erfahrungspunkte werden beispielsweise durch die verheerenden Mikroplastikstückchen dargestellt. Magische Kräfte manifestieren sich als mysteriöses “Umami”. Jede Menge Müll ist über den Grund des Meers verteilt, darunter spaßige und grausige Wortspiele. Eins meiner Lieblingsdetails ist eine Schlosswache, der mit einem Strohhalm und einem Plastikdeckel eines Getränks ausgestattet ist, wie sein menschlicher Counterpart mit einem riesigen Schwert ausgestattet wäre. Aggro Crabs Sinn für Humor und bunte Ästhetik bietet einen unterhaltsamen Gegensatz zum melancholischen Ton des Soulslike-Genres im Allgemeinen.

Erhebt die Panzer gegen eure Gegner

Natürlich ist der Clou jedes Soulslike-Spiels das Gameplay und Aggro Crab bleibt dem Genre hier treu – mit ein paar netten Twists. Krills Bewegungen halten leichte und schwere Attacken auf R1 und R2 bereit. Der Kreis-Knopf ist fürs Springen, das Quadrat nutzt Umami-Magie und mit L1 blockt ihr mit eurem aktuell gebastelten Panzer. Wenn ihr auf eure Gegner gelockt seid – zum Beispiel aggressive Krabben – könnt ihr ihre Bewegungen studieren und solange blocken und ausweichen, bis sich die richtige Gelegenheit zum Angriff ergibt. Mit R1 lasst ihr eine befriedigende geladene Attacke auf sie los, mit der ihr oft Gegner mit einem Mal besiegt – sie treiben dann mit den Strömungen des Meers davon.

Krills Panzer ist der große Unterschied von Another Crab’s Treasure zu anderen Soulslikes. Wie der Name des Spiels schon verrät, sucht Krill nach vorübergehenden Häusern, während er auf der Mission ist, sein ursprüngliches Zuhause wieder zu gewinnen. Die haben die Form von Getränkedosen, Flaschendeckeln, Bananenschalen, Partyhüten – was immer er findet. Jeder “Panzer” ist auch ein Schutzschild und bietet einzigartige Verbesserungen für eure Stats wie Verbesserungen von Angriffen, Umami, Verteidigung und Co.

Einige Gegner sind besonders verwundbar durch Umami-Magie, was bedeutet, dass das Entfesseln der einzigartigen Panzer-Eigenschaften der Schlüssel zu eurem Erfolg sein kann. Ich hatte enormen Spaß daran, die Angriffs-Blasen der Getränkedose einzusetzen und das Elektrofeld der Konservendose auszunutzen. Panzer haben nur eine begrenzte Haltbarkeit, also müsst ihr immer auf der Suche nach dem nächsten Übergangshaus für Krill sein. Anfangs hat mich diese Haltbarkeitssache gestört, aber mit der Zeit habe ich zu schätzen gelernt, dass ich so viele Panzer ausprobieren musste.

3D-Spaß

In den meisten Soulslike-Spielen bleibt ihr klar auf dem Boden – was ein anderer Bereich ist, in dem Another Crab’s Treasure gegen den Strom schwimmt. Mit dem X-Knopf springt ihr und wenn ihr ihn gedrückt haltet, schafft Krill einen süßen kleinen Schwimmzug. So bewegt ihr euch flexibel und taucht durch die fröhliche, klassische 3D-Jump’n’Run-Ästhetik des Spiels. Ein Ort kann sich vielleicht hinter zerbrechlichen Glasflaschen verdecken und dann ein kleines Minilevel enthüllen. Andere fordern euch heraus, auf einen Aussichtspunkt zu klettern und zu einem weit entfernten Sammelelement zu gleiten.

Krill entdeckt schließlich einen Enterhaken, mit dem er auf ganz neue Varianten in die dritte Dimension tauchen kann. Wenn ihr L2 in der Höhe gedrückt haltet, wird die Zeit langsamer und Krill kann so bestimmte Punkte greifen wie Fischhaken und Netze, die er erklimmen kann. Diese Reiseoptionen können euch motivieren, die Umgebung wirklich sorgfältig zu untersuchen und versteckte Schätze zu finden (sobald Gegner aus dem Weg geräumt wurden). Das richtige Tempo ist der Schlüssel zu Soulslike-Spielen und ich mochte, dass es nach diesen harten und konzentrationsintensiven Kämpfen eine Phase lockerer Jump’n’Run-Elemente gibt.

Ein Augenzwinkern in Richtung Soulslike-Fans

Another Crab’s Treasure erinnert mich an den Musiker und Nationalhelden Weird Al Yankovic, der auch immer eine humorvolle Parodie auf ein bekanntes Thema herausbringt und dabei Entertainment bietet, das weit über einen oberflächlichen Witz hinausgeht. Beispielsweise gefiel mir, dass ich im ersten Bosskampf über die ritterähnliche Seekreatur lachen musste, die einen Hügel herunter auf mich zugerannt kam während sein Name und die Health Bar den oberen Teil des Bildschirms ausfüllte. Und direkt im Anschluss musste ich einen wirklich anspruchsvollen aber lohnenden Kampf angehen.

Basierend auf meiner direkten Erfahrung geht es weiter mit der Hommage als ein paar oberflächliche Anspielungen – und der einzigartige Zeichentrick-Vibe und der Rüstungsaustausch machen das Erlebnis frisch und neu. Taucht in Another Crab’s Treasure auf PS5 ein, wenn es morgen am 25. April erscheint.
