Keeping kids safer online and fostering healthy digital habits is important for parents, and finding the right balance is key. Today, we’re announcing new tools for parents to manage their child’s devices with Google Family Link.

    Family Link’s new look

Family Link’s new design is more intuitive for parents to use and navigate. A new Screen Time tab consolidates all screen-time management tools in a single, easily accessible place. In addition to the app and device-specific usage summary and time limits, the Screen Time tab also makes it easier for parents to set and adjust Downtime and School time.

Parents will find that managing their child’s account, privacy settings and content filters are now easier than ever on the Controls tab. We’ve streamlined key controls so parents have what they need right at their fingertips, including the ability to manage account data settings, approve app downloads and block specific websites.

Juggling multiple kids and their devices is also getting easier. Simply swipe between child profiles and manage devices from a single page, with more advanced settings just a tap away.

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mt_w50yqqAg?feature=oembed&w=500&h=281]

Today we’re rolling out a handful of updates to make Android’s hearing aid and screenreader experiences even more accessible.

Starting with the Samsung Galaxy S25, we’re bringing the benefits of the next generation of Bluetooth to GN Hearing and Oticon Intent hearing aids, using new LE Audio technology. With LE Audio compatibility, people can now access easy hearing aid management — including hands-free calling, a way to change presets via native settings and lower latency Bluetooth connections. This new integration will also be available on the Pixel 9 with Android 16 beta and come to Galaxy S24 with Android 15 in the coming weeks.

And we’re beginning to roll out new updates to TalkBack, Android’s screenreader, to make devices even more accessible for people who are blind or have low-vision. Starting with Samsung Galaxy S25 devices, anyone who uses braille will be able to use their displays via HID, a way to connect to Bluetooth devices. Over the coming months this functionality will begin to work on any phone or tablet using Android 15. TalkBack will also provide more detailed image descriptions, powered by Gemini models, on Galaxy S25 devices in the coming weeks.

  • Turn your old Android smartphone into an Arduino screen with the RemoteXY app

Turn your old Android smartphone into an Arduino screen with the RemoteXY app

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

Each component you add to your Arduino project increases its complexity and the opportunity for mistakes. But most projects require some “auxiliary” hardware — components that you use to interact with the Arduino or to help it do the job you’re asking of it. Buttons and displays are great examples. But as Doctor Volt demonstrates in his most recent video, you can replace both of those with the high-quality touchscreen on your old Android smartphone using the RemoteXY app.

You likely learned early in your Arduino journey that the serial connection between the Arduino development board and a PC is very handy. It lets the Arduino output information and also lets you input commands. But an entire computer (even a laptop) is pretty bulky and requires a lot of power. The RemoteXY app, available for Android devices, lets you use your smartphone to do the same job.

Even better, you can use the RemoteXY app with an Arduino library to get an interface much more sophisticated than a normal serial terminal. The app still communicates with the Arduino via serial behind the scenes, but it uses that data to enable nice touchscreen-friendly GUI controls, graphs, and more.

For that to work, you need a way for your Android smartphone to establish a serial connection with your Arduino board. That is easy to do using an OTG cable with a USB-to-Serial adapter. Together, those let your smartphone talk to your Arduino just like your PC does. Doctor Volt’s video walks you through setting up and using the RemoteXY Arduino library and how to configure the app.

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d93kF9tAtxc?feature=oembed&w=500&h=281]

In a short amount of time, you’ll get a user-friendly interface for your project on the smartphone’s high-resolution touchscreen.

Blending technology with everyday life, with help from AI

Android XR will first launch on headsets that transform how you watch, work and explore. The first device, code named Project Moohan and built by Samsung, will be available for purchase next year.

With headsets, you can effortlessly switch between being fully immersed in a virtual environment and staying present in the real world. You can fill the space around you with apps and content, and with Gemini, our AI assistant, you can even have conversations about what you’re seeing or control your device. Gemini can understand your intent, helping you plan, research topics and guide you through tasks.

We’re also reimagining some of your favorite Google apps for headsets. You can watch YouTube and Google TV on a virtual big screen, or relive your cherished memories with Google Photos in 3D. You’ll be able to explore the world in new ways with Google Maps, soaring above cities and landmarks in Immersive View. And with Chrome, multiple virtual screens will let you multitask with ease. You can even use Circle to Search to quickly find information on whatever’s in front of you, with just a simple gesture.

Plus, because it’s Android, your favorite mobile and tablet apps from Google Play will work right out of the box, with even more apps, games and immersive content made for XR arriving next year.

As part of our ongoing commitment to safety, we’ve made technology improvements to bring you alerts faster and more often. We’re also rolling out two new features for Find My Device compatible tags:

    • Temporarily Pause Location: You can now temporarily pause location updates from your phone to prevent your device’s location from being used by a detected unknown tag for up to 24 hours. This provides an extra layer of privacy and control, allowing you to take a first action quickly while you locate and physically disable the tag.
    • Find Nearby: If you receive an unknown tracker alert, you can now use the „Find Nearby“ feature to pinpoint the tag’s location. Your Android device will guide you to the tag, to help you find it if it’s hidden.

Expressive Captions are part of Live Caption, so they’re built into the operating system and available across apps on your phone. This means you can use Expressive Captions with most things you watch, like livestreams on social platforms, memories in your Google Photos reel and video messages from friends and family. When enabled, captions will occur in real time and on device, so you can use them even while you’re on airplane mode.

    Bringing Expressive Captions to life

To build Expressive Captions, our Android and Google DeepMind teams worked to understand how we engage with content on our devices without sound. Using multiple AI models, Expressive Captions not only captures spoken words but also translates them into stylized captions, while providing labels for an even wider range of background sounds. This makes captions just as vibrant as listening to audio. It’s just one way we’re building for the real lived experiences of people with disabilities and using AI to build for everyone.

Starting today, Expressive Captions will be available in the U.S. in English on any Android device running Android 14 and above that has Live Caption. This is part of our work to find even more ways to bring emotional expression and context to captions.

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

Over the past two years, we’ve been working behind the scenes to improve the process of setting up your Android phone and transferring your information, so you can bring what’s important to you, with you.

Here are the top four updates we’ve made to make the switch even easier:

    1. Android Switch on phones around the world

To make the process of switching to a new device as simple and straightforward as possible, we launched Android Switch, our streamlined onboarding experience, with several phone manufacturers.

We know it’s important to be able to get your chats, calendars, contacts and more on your new device, including the nitty-gritty information like your Wi-Fi, screen lock and Google account. That’s why our Android Switch experience walks you through clear steps to get set up and to learn about the features on your new device.

    2. Faster data transfers

If you’re using a cable to switch from iOS to Android, it’s 40% faster to transfer your data compared to 2023. This saves hours for people who have a lot of data to move from phone to phone.

Having the information you care about on your new phone is essential to making it feel like your own.

    3. More flexibility for switchers and upgraders

If you’d rather check out your new phone first and transfer your data later, we’ve got you covered. Available with Pixel 9 and coming to more Android phone makers in 2025, you can quickly complete your initial setup and get your data when you’re ready. When ready, just head to Settings to copy data from your old device or check out the app on Google Play. From there, you’ll be able to connect to your old device and get the information you want, when you want it.

For those upgrading an Android device to a new one, we’ve got an express setup option. You can opt to transfer only the information that is stored on the device, and none of the information you already have stored in the cloud. And, if you have a Pixel Watch, that device will prompt you to transfer data to your new phone at the end of setup.

    4. Easier messaging with the people you love

Of course, the way you connect with friends and family is just as important as the information on your phone. This year, Apple adopted RCS. Now, whether your loved ones are on Android or iOS devices, you can send high-res images and videos, react to text messages with any emoji you like, and add or remove people from group chats.

Today, Android 15 starts rolling out to Pixel devices. These updates include security features that help keep your sensitive health, financial and personal information protected from theft and fraud. Plus, we’re introducing improvements for large-screen devices that help you get more done, and updates across apps including camera, messaging and passkeys.

Your Android devices are always getting better thanks to new features and updates rolling out all the time — not just once a year. This year, we rolled out helpful new AI updates to Android devices, including Circle to Search and new ways to interact with Gemini. And today, we’re bringing you even more updates, here’s a look at what’s new:

Help deter theft and recover a stolen device faster

The new Theft Detection Lock uses AI to help keep your data safe. If your phone senses someone has snatched it and is trying to run, bike or drive away, it will automatically lock your device. You can also use Remote Lock to quickly lock your device from any device using your phone number and a simple security check. These features are now available for most Android 10+ devices.

And Android 15 brings additional protections that prevent thieves from guessing your passwords and accessing sensitive information. For example, we’re adding authentication requirements for settings targeted by thieves, like removing your SIM or turning off Find My Device, and will lock down your device if we sense multiple failed attempts for apps and settings. These updates make it harder for thieves to reset and sell a stolen device, and deter more thefts before they happen. Learn more about the new theft protection features on the Google Online Security blog.

Today, at our ninth Made by Google event, we shared how we’re bringing the best of Google AI to more people and more phones with updates across Gemini, Android and the Pixel portfolio.

We believe that AI can make day-to-day life more productive, open up new ways to learn, and create ways for people to express themselves. This is especially true when AI is built into the devices that people carry around with them everywhere. We’re innovating with AI at every layer of the tech stack — from our research and models that make new features and capabilities possible, to Android OS that brings the apps and services to billions of people to use every day, to our premium hardware built with a custom silicon chip.

Here’s everything we announced across Gemini and Android — plus, how we’re bringing these new capabilities to our latest Pixel devices, including the new Pixel 9 phones, Pixel 9 Pro Fold, Pixel Watch 3 and Pixel Buds Pro 2.
