Art Expert Removes 200-Year-Old Yellowing Varnish From A 399-Year-Old Painting, And The Difference Is Unbelievable

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

A protective finish is applied to keep paintings safe from wear, but they will discolor as a result of time going by. About two hundred years ago, someone coated a 1618 oil portrait of an unknown lady with a thick layer of varnish and it wasn’t until recently that the true colors of the artwork were unearthed. Art expert and host of the BBC One show Fake or Fortune Philip Mould shared footage with his followers, revealing the careful removal of the protective varnish from the painting, and the transformation looks stunning.

“A remarkable Jacobean re-emergence after 200 years of yellowing varnish,” he wrote on Twitter. Most details of the “Woman in Red” are lost, and all that we know is that she was 36 years old at the time. While art restoration sometimes takes a terribly wrong turn, the presenter demonstrated a high level of expertise when revealing the lush colors hiding under the protective finish.

“The painting was originally in a private collection in England,” Mould told The Telegraph. “We started restoration of the painting <…> after extensive testing of the varnish on an oil surface on oak panel. A mixture of gel and solvent was created, specifically just to remove the varnish and not to damage the underlying paint. It’s different from normal restoration, with the gel suspending the solvent and working in a more controllable way.”

This Japanese Artist’s Pencil Drawings Are So Realistic, People Can’t Believe They’re Not Photographs

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

It may not shock you that incredible things can be done with just pencils and paper, but the breathtakingly lifelike drawings of 22-year-old Japanese artist Kohei Ohmori are bound to leave you amazed.

The Okayama-based prodigy spends more than 200 hours on each project, and his attention to detail is strikingly evident. Thanks to carefully-placed shading, ultra-thin lines, and a remarkably steady hand, Ohmori’s designs look as if they’re going to jump right off the page. They’re so immaculate, in fact, that his Twitter audience is calling him a ‘mad genius’ and ‘insane’ over the amount of dedication he puts into his penciled portraits. His most recent effort, which has yet to be completed, depicts a shiny nut and bolt, while his ‘signature piece’ is considered to be a stunning headshot of British model Sophia Blackbrough.

Scroll down to see Ohmori’s portfolio for yourself, and if you still need more proof of what can be accomplished with a sharp pencil, check out these drawings by Nigerian artist Arinze Stanley, or these paint blobs by CJ Hendry.

Jon Guerdrum loves to paint things that make people smile. His About Page on Etsy states: “I hope my art brings a grin to your face, and a giggle to your heart!” He works as senior mechanical engineer at Otter Products but spends time making his own art as much as possible.

Guerdrum lives in Fort Collins, Colorado, which he describes as “a land of great mountains, fantastic beer, and wonderful people.” In addition to painting, he enjoys hiking, biking, and camping, plus of course a good beer through the many local breweries. Home brewing is a hobby of his, and he also plays in a band called Spaceagle.

The artist’s watercolor and ink “Drinking Buddies” series illustrates the good vibes that ensue from imbibing. Guerdrum says his cat named Yeti is his biggest critic and inspiration.

Family Halloween costumes may seem like the lamest idea you could possibly have, but actor Neil Patrick Harris and his husband, David Burtka, are proving otherwise. Every year since 2011, ‘NPH’ and his clan have been putting together the most epic outfit ensembles for All Hallows’ Eve, and they just dropped their latest one on Instagram. This is 100% not a trick, and it’s probably the best treat you’ll get tonight.

From The Wizard of Oz, to Gotham’s Finest, to Star Wars, the Harris-Burtka quartet – including twins Gideon and Harper – always pulls off whatever theme they choose flawlessly, leaving fans on the edge of their seat each October to see what they’ll do next. This year’s edition just went online 10 hours ago, and has already racked up more than 422 thousand likes. It’s almost better than a pillowcase full of candy and a scary movie marathon.

What did they go with this time around? You’ll just have to scroll down and see for yourself.

Josh Sundquist heard his cancer diagnosis when he was only nine years old. The doctors said that Josh was flipping a coin for his life – the boy’s survival chance was about 50%. He lost his left leg, despite chemotherapy, but by thirteen he was 100% cancer-free. By sixteen, he was ski-racing, and Sundquist even went on to represent the U.S. in the 2006 Paralympics in Torino, Italy. Now, Sundquist is a motivational speaker who’s become famous on social media for his clever and inventive, amputation-incorporating Halloween costumes.

“I’ve always dealt with the social discomfort of my disability by having a sense of humor,” Sundquist said. “But now I’m more comfortable with who I am and what I look like, and I guess with these Halloween costumes you could even say that I celebrate what makes me different. Which may be either weird or refreshing, depending on your perspective.” Year after year, he outdoes himself, and 2017 is no different. Scroll down to check out what this cool guy came up with this time!

Sick Grandma Brings ‘The Rock’ Cutout To Hospital, And Here’s What He Does When He Finds Out

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

“This kind of stuff will always be the best part of fame,” Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson captioned an Instagram video posted Monday night. The actor and former wrestler had received an email from a fan asking for a shout-out, but a very special one, and he just couldn’t refuse.

Inside the email was the story of Judy Rosenberg, a 76-year-old grandmother who just entered hospice care with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. Though she reportedly has the support of her husband, 5 children, and (drum roll) 17 grandchildren, Judy’s greatest comfort in the world happens to be a life-size, scantily clad cardboard cutout of The Rock, which has accompanied her to her current residence. She is said to be a “potty mouth,” and just wanted her hero to tell her she was sexy.

Johnson happily obliged, and while we don’t have any updates on whether or not Judy has seen the video, we’re sure she’ll be over the moon when she does. “Stay strong Judy, you sexy tiger. We’re all sending you and your family love and light during this time and I’m an extremely grateful man this email reached my eyes,” The Rock further wrote. Say what you will about celebrities, but every now and then, they use their fame to do some serious good.
