Towerborne: Bringing an Enemy to Life

    Reading Time: 9 minutes

Venturing outside the Belfry can prove dangerous with many creatures causing havoc across the world of Towerborne. One creature in particular is the all-powerful Truffleclub.

From Art to Animation to Combat Design, creating enemies is an effort that travels across game development disciplines. We had the opportunity to sit down with Lead Combat Designer Isaac Torres, Senior Combat Designer Aviva Schecterson, Principal Animator Joseph Garrahan and Lead Concept Artists Jeff Murchie from Stoic Studio to answer some questions and dive into the process of bringing an idea to life!

Hello! And thank you for your time! Let’s go ahead and plunge into some questions, starting with your background! Tell us a bit about yourself!

Isaac: Hello! I’m Isaac Torres, Lead Combat Designer at Stoic. I have a strong love for everything combat-focused and have been working in the game industry for about a decade now. Even though my career has been focused on fighting games for most of my time in the industry, I was immediately starstruck when I saw Towerborne for the first time. I knew in my heart that this was a game that I had to work on and I’m glad to have been given the opportunity to lead a wonderful group of Combat Designers to help bring this game to life.

Aviva: I’m Aviva, Senior Combat Designer at Stoic where I get to work on all our enemies. I attended DigiPen for my bachelor’s in game design and worked on tabletop games for a few years. When I was at Amazon, I worked on both Crucible and New World. I’ve been at Stoic for just over three years now and have really enjoyed spearheading our AI combat. Outside of work, I have two gorgeous cats that sit on me while I read or play games.

Senior Combat Designer Aviva Schecterson’s Cats: Asher (14yrs old and 12lbs) and Pepita (2yrs old and 7lbs).

Joseph: I’m Joseph, Principal Animator at Stoic. I’ve been an animator since 2000 when I got to animate a TV commercial and studied animation at Savannah College of Art & Design. I’ve worked on movies, TV series and videogames. Most recently I was at Naughty Dog working on Uncharted and The Last of Us Part II”. I’m a big anime and video game fan, always loved beat ‘em up games. So, when the opportunity came to work on a project like this, I couldn’t resist.

Jeff: Hi, I’m Jeff, the Lead Concept Artist at Stoic, and me and my small team have the privilege to visualize the characters within Towerborne’s lore. I’ve been in the industry since the early 2000s and got my start with LucasArts. Since getting my foot in the door I have worked on a variety of projects, most recently Crash Bandicoot: It’s About Time, the Spyro Reignited Trilogy and bringing toys to life for the Skylanders series. I have been with Stoic for over three years and enjoy every minute exploring the visual concepts for our game. Am I supposed to say something personal? I love playing basketball and Ultimate Frisbee…. when I get the chance.

Let’s go back to the beginning. What was your experience when creating Truffleclub for the first time?

Truffleclub original concepts - Jeff Murchie - Lead Concept Artist - Stoic Studio
Truffleclub original concepts – Jeff Murchie – Lead Concept Artist – Stoic Studio

Jeff: As the concept artist for Truffleclub, I saw it as an evolving process. The team knew we wanted a creature that would fit into the theme of a fungi forest. A mushroom aesthetic was the clear direction which I explored with a variety of sketches. One of the few requirements for this boss at the start was that he was a smasher. One of the tricky aspects of character development (specifically enemies) in Towerborne is striking a balance for a creature that is both frightening and whimsical in appearance. We did not want designs that just feel scary and intimidating. I love watching this character develop past its visual concept. The character model, animations and VFX added so much power and personality to Truffleclub.

Aviva: My introduction to the Truffleclub was seen on the development whiteboard with other minor characters. I was really interested in seeing how the big boss and the small fodder could feel like they were functionally in the same family and provide very different gameplay for players.

Joseph: I was involved since the beginning of the concept phase, and always saw the potential to create wacky scenarios with him, such as parachuting mushrooms and drilling into the ground.

Isaac: My experience was different: I joined Stoic when Truffleclub was already in development. I was astounded by the scale of the characters and the personality of all its animations and movements. I love the creativity in its design and the team did a fantastic job making this character come to life.

In order to achieve compelling and interesting enemy movement, one must be inspired by the abnormal and unconventional. From where do you draw creativity when animating complex characters such as Truffleclub?

Joseph: I’ve always been fascinated by anime that pushes the limits, such as Gurren Lagan and Studio Trigger’s work. Never take the easy way to do choreography. Wild things can happen in one second. It makes everything more difficult to animate, but it’s more satisfying in the end.

How do you begin the process of bringing an enemy to life? Do you sit down and discuss how the character moves? Do you give it personality? A backstory? Other than the concept art, you are basically starting with a blank canvas.

Isaac: As the Lead Combat Designer on the project, I have to think about the bigger picture of combat for every enemy we create. What role does the character fit? Are there any twists we can add to an enemy’s move set that makes the game more fun to play? Sometimes the archetype is something that the design team is already settled on. Sometimes we’ll get various pieces of concept art that inspires us, and we’ll build a move set off that.

It’s important to me to ensure that people who are not working on the character have an opportunity to help shape its gameplay. Because of this, we often start with a blank canvas of ideas. Since we generally know which biome an enemy will appear in, this also helps inform its design, or at least gives us something to work off of right from the start. Overall, the process itself is super fun and is one of my favorite parts of the project. Everyone’s creativity really shines, and it’s great to experience.

Aviva: I like to start with personality and the purpose of this enemy. For me, those inform each other and can then inform other mechanics and behavior patterns. For Truffleclub, we wanted them to feel imposing and punchy, plus also try out our new “status effect” tech by letting them do poison damage. We also had this drawing for potential phases with notes (note that the fight doesn’t have this phase structure anymore, but the burrow move, forward fist slam, and side fist slams became real moves and still exist).

Joseph: We usually start with a basic concept, such as the size of the character and what the main goal is for the game, maybe a weapon we want to try out. After that, I start thinking about what kind of motion would be best for it, such as martial arts, boxing, acrobatic, etc. Sometimes we create an animation depicting the basic motions, either in 3D or with 2D drawings. Our Animation Director, Lance Myers, created an awesome 2D animatic for Truffleclub. The backstory can be defined earlier, but sometimes naturally comes after exploring these options. On Truffleclub, we settled on an ape-like motion, swinging his weight around.

    Were there any design challenges?

Aviva: Yes. Truffleclub was our first big boss who became playable early in pre-production. As games go, there are many combat and iteration changes, so the attack patterns and encounter pacing have to keep up not only with combat changes from the player side, but also tech updates on our AI side. This character has also been on each version of our AI tech, so they’ve been taken apart and put back together multiple times.

Joseph: I initially did the walk cycle as a biped, but a team member mentioned it looked like “a folk in a monkey suit.” That pushed me to explore more interesting locomotion and ended up with a quadruped ape-like walk cycle. In the end, that influenced the overall personality.

Isaac: It’s always a huge challenge creating the first boss of a game. There’s so much exploration that occurs on an enemy like this that basically shapes the direction of the rest of the game. Part of the challenge is finding the fun, and as a combat team, we always make sure that’s our priority. Sometimes what works early on in development may require fundamental changes later due to various advancements over time. That is honestly the biggest challenge. As we develop the game, we are also growing as a team. Sometimes we’ll have to go back to older content and elevate it to the quality of our later content because we’ve learned so much.

It is worth noting that Truffleclub isn’t alone in this fight! This created an additional challenge, since you never want an encounter to feel like it’s too overwhelming. Finding that sweet spot, whether it is a 1-on-1 or a 4-on-1 scenario was critical throughout development. How many enemies is too many? Do we need to add unique behaviors? What types of interactions with the player maximize fun while adding an interesting challenge?

What was your favorite part when animating Truffleclub?

Joseph: The burrowing underground, since I was able to fully squash and stretch the character rig to extremes and create interesting smear shapes.

Taking Truffleclub’s animation, the team must consider how Truffleclub interacts with up to four players coming at it on all fronts. Tell me about the animation process of battle with live gaming on different weapons versus pre-scripted AI.

Joseph: I just need to create lots of attacks that target different ranges and scenarios: crowd control, single direction, etc. The designers then make sure these attacks trigger when needed.

Isaac: Great transition. As a Combat Designer, this is a continuous challenge. Not only do we have to ensure that combat feels good from a 1-on-1 perspective, but we also always must consider scenarios with up to four players. Playtesting is key. We constantly go back and forth with animation on every aspect of the character. Does Truffleclub move too slow? Does it have ways to escape when four players are surrounding it with a barrage of attacks? Are the attacks obvious enough to inform players that a big move is about to be done? As designers, we try to identify these scenarios as early as possible. Because of this, we’ll always ask animators to give us stubby versions of animations so that we can put things through their paces and adjust where necessary.

What do you think Truffleclub does in its time off?

Aviva: I think Truffleclub enjoys conducting mushroom concerts where they create symphonies with their mycelial network.

Joseph: Probably spawns smaller mushrooms deep underground while sleeping.
Isaac: Hmm, since Truffleclub likes to burrow underground, maybe it is creating an elaborate transportation system for its buddies.

What do you want to tell readers about the awesome work being done with not only Truffleclub but with other Towerborne enemies they have not seen yet?

Aviva: Truffleclub was our first boss. Since the Truffleclub’s creation, there’s lots of things we’ve come up with that are fun. Truffleclub is just the beginning 🙂

Joseph: The goal is to surprise players with the cool and unexpected. Taking the beat-’em-up experience to new levels.

Isaac: I can’t wait for players to see the variety in our enemy designs and the love that was put into everything they do. Seeing the big hulking Truffleclub alongside the floppier and cuter Amanita is such a fun contrast. We hope that it’ll always make you smile when you see them.

  • The best maker software by experience level

The best maker software by experience level

    Reading Time: 6 minutes

Today’s makers have access to the most advanced materials, resources, and support in history, and it’s improving all the time. The downside is that finding the right software can sometimes feel confusing and overwhelming. There are seemingly endless options, all with different attributes and advantages.

In this article, we’re here to help make things easier. We’ll walk you through the best software for makers at each experience level — beginner, intermediate, and expert — and help you identify the right software for your needs.

The best maker software for each experience level

    Beginner-level software

If you’re new to the world of making, you’ll likely have some specific needs and requirements that won’t apply to more experienced folks.

For example, you’ll want software that’s forgiving and beginner-friendly, that comes with more opportunities to learn the basics, and is easy enough that you won’t be discouraged from making.

With that in mind, here are our top picks for the best beginner-level maker software.

    Arduino IDE

Arduino is one of the most well-established and well-known platforms for makers of all levels. Arduino’s microcontrollers allow you to program projects with your own custom code, creating gadgets that work exactly the way you want them to.

If you’re new to the game, you’ll want to start with a microcontroller that’s suitable for beginners. The Arduino IDE is perfect for this: it’s free, user-friendly, and leverages a simplified version of the C/C++ programming languages so you can learn the basics in a fun and rewarding way.

    TinkerCAD

Since it first came onto the scene in 2011, TinkerCAD has been a great choice for beginners looking to get started with making their own projects.

As a CAD (computer-aided design) software, TinkerCAD is a fantastic tool for designers and can be used to create models for 3D printing.

Due to its beginner-friendly nature, TinkerCAD is often used in schools to help learners get to grips with basic coding and design, building their own elementary tech projects. It’s also completely free of charge.

The advantage of using TinkerCAD is that it also contains a simple circuit designer and visual code tool useful to generate the code for Arduino boards.

    Intermediate-level software

Once you’ve learned the basics of making, you’ll likely be craving some more challenging and stimulating projects.

Taking your coding skills to the next level requires more sophisticated software, allowing you to be more adventurous and ambitious with your plans. The good news is that there is plenty of software out there for intermediate makers. Let’s take a look at some examples.

    Python

Python is one of the most well-known programming languages out there, and it’s compatible with most maker-friendly platforms and microcontrollers.

Python works well with Arduino hardware, and is especially well-suited for projects that use sensors and other components. You don’t need to be a coding wizard to start using Python in this way, but you will need some familiarity and experience.

Check out this project — a Nicla Vision-based fire detector built by Arduino user Shakhizat Nurgaliyev using Python. Shakhizat created an entirely generated dataset and then trained a model on that data to detect fires.

    MicroPython

MicroPython is an experimental, lean, and lightweight implementation of the programming language Python, and it’s designed specifically to be used with microcontrollers.

This makes it ideal for use with Arduino projects, and it works especially well with those that use sensors and similar components. MicroPython does require a base of coding knowledge to use, but you don’t need to be an expert.

    Visual Studio Code

Visual Studio Code, often abbreviated as VS Code, is an open-source editor created by Microsoft that is compatible with Windows, Linux, and macOS.

It offers a range of features such as debugging support, syntax highlighting, smart code completion, snippets, code refactoring, and integrated Git functionality. Visual Studio Code can be used to develop code for Arduino boards, and, by using the available extensions, you can upload code directly to the Arduino boards.

    Node-RED

Node-RED is built to bring hardware devices, software, and online services together, creating ever more interesting and advanced projects.

It works especially well with IoT projects — and is a great choice if you want to integrate platforms like Arduino with other devices to build your own custom designs for use in your home.

Node-RED’s browser-based editor and built-in library make it a powerful tool for those with some coding experience to make new projects.

Arduino’s Portenta X8 can host a Node-RED instance running it on a container, making it easy to connect and integrate several different services, either locally or online with Arduino Cloud or third-party software.

In this project, David Beamonte used Node-RED and Arduino Cloud, to integrate a TP-Link smart Wi-Fi plug with other projects. This way, they were able to link multiple smart home devices together and control them from one central hub.

    Expert-level software

Are you a true veteran of making and coding? Fluent in more programming languages than you can remember, with a host of impressive projects under your belt and a slot at next year’s Maker Faire?

If so, you have the skills to achieve some truly exciting things. Let’s take a look at the software available for expert-level makers.

    MATLAB

MATLAB is an advanced piece of software that works well with Arduino hardware and similar products.

It’s especially useful when building projects that require data analysis and complex, large-scale computations. Proficiency in MATLAB can lead to some truly impressive creations, but it takes a solid amount of experience and skill to realize those results.

Arduino users MadhuGovindarajan and ssalunkhe used MATLAB to build their very own lane-following rover. The project used the rover from Arduino’s Engineering Kit, combined with an algorithm that allows the rover to stay within a designated lane while driving.

The Arduino Engineering kit contains three different projects that involve physical hardware and MATLAB/Simulink to create amazing results.

    C/C++ IDEs

The programming languages C and C++ have been around for decades, underpinning the worlds of computer science and software engineering.

If you have a solid base of coding ability, you can use C/C++ development environments to program Arduino boards and create ever more advanced and impressive projects.

    Other resources

    GitHub

Do you want to share your code with your mates, or with the world?

If so, GitHub is the perfect place to do it. It’s an open-source community with multiple contributors and lots of integrations with developer-oriented software.

Inside, you’ll find more than 300 million projects, known as repos. Makers use the platform to share their work, but it can also be useful to take a look and draw inspiration from the trending repositories.

    AI/ML

AI is making headlines all over the world, but it extends far beyond ChatGPT.

Makers today have access to a wealth of fantastic tools to speed up work, correct errors, and document your shiny new code. Check out GitHub copilot and OpenAI Codex to get started.

    Using software with Arduino

By combining the right software tools with Arduino’s products, you have the perfect recipe for your next awesome project.

If you want to gain inspiration, or share your own work with our community, check out the Arduino Project Hub where you can search for projects and filter by type and difficulty level.

  • Machine learning makes fabric buttons practical

Machine learning makes fabric buttons practical

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

The entire tech industry is desperate for a practical wearable HMI (Human Machine Interface) right now. The most newsworthy devices at CES this year were the Rabbit R1 and the Humane AI Pin, both of which are attempts to streamline wearable interfaces with and for AI. Both have numerous drawbacks, as do most other approaches. What the world really needs is an affordable, practical, and unobtrusive solution, and North Carolina State University researchers may have found the answer in machine learning-optimized fabric buttons.

It is, of course, possible to adhere a conventional button to fabric. But by making the button itself from fabric, these researchers have improved comfort, lowered costs, and introduced a lot more flexibility — both literally and metaphorically. These are triboelectric touch sensors, which detect the amount of force exerted on them by measuring the energy between two layers of opposite charges.

But there is a problem with this approach: the measured values vary dramatically based on usage, environmental conditions, manufacturing tolerances, and physical wear. The fabric button on one shirt sleeve may present completely different readings than another. If this were a simple binary button, it wouldn’t be as challenging of an issue. But the whole point of this sensor type is to provide a one-dimensional scale corresponding to the pressure exerted, so consistency is important.

Because achieving physical consistency isn’t practical, the team turned to machine learning. A TensorFlow Lite for Microcontrollers machine learning model, running on an Arduino Nano ESP32 board, interprets the readings from the sensors. It is then able to differentiate between several interactions: single clicks, double clicks, triple clicks, single slides, double slides, and long presses.

Even if the exact readings change between sensors (or the same sensor over time), the patterns are still recognizable to the machine learning model. This would make it practical to integrate fabric buttons into inexpensive garments and users could interact with their devices through those interfaces.

The researchers demonstrated the concept with mobile apps and even a game. More details can be found in their paper here.

    Frostpunk 2 screenshot

While the original Frostpunk launched without a sandbox mode, it quickly became one of the community’s top requests. Hence, we introduced the Endless mode, allowing players to expand endlessly. Witnessing players spend over 500 hours or more in the game has been truly inspiring for us.

    Frostpunk 2 screenshot

From the outset, we knew a variation of the sandbox mode was essential for Frostpunk 2. As we believe Frostpunk 2 represents a significant step forward for the franchise, each aspect of the game needed expansion. For the sandbox experience, we aimed to infuse it with a richer narrative and other unique aspects specific to Frostpunk 2.

    Frostpunk 2 screenshot

Thirty years after the Great Storm, which concluded the first game’s storyline, humanity has partially tamed the weather. So making a blizzard in a sequel even bigger than the one in the first Frostpunk wouldn’t feel satisfying, creative, or exciting for you as a player. It is impossible to tell the story of social change of ambitions without changing the scale. Thus, the time flow in the game transitions from hours and days to weeks, months, and years, and players oversee the creation of entire districts, emphasizing societal survival and shaping. Frostpunk 2 continues an approach to be a society survival type of strategy game but also places greater emphasis on how this society is shaped.

    Frostpunk 2 citadel

With the absence of immediate survival pressure, citizens began to contemplate a different future, leading to varied visions among factions. As the new Steward, you are tasked with building a council representative of these factions. The ideological conflict is also present in the Utopia Builder Preview mode, demanding players reconcile conflicting interests and navigate societal complexities.

Mismanagement could lead to catastrophe while allowing ambitions to grow unchecked can foster social conflicts. Ultimately, human nature can lead to the city’s downfall, where one’s utopia may become another’s dystopia.

How The Riders Market Addition is Turning MotoGP 24 Into the Most Authentic Entry Yet

Moreover, players’ behavior on and off the track will greatly influence Riders’ Market dynamics. As I mentioned earlier, last year we introduced a rivalry system as well as a fictional social network where riders, teams, and manufacturers interact with each other. The evolution of rivalries as well as likes and replies on the fictional social network will fuel rumors about possible future transfers, which players will be able to keep an eye on through a dedicated menu of the career mode.

The Riders Market is the last major piece we needed to fully shape the game and the series itself, and I can’t wait to see our fans getting the most out of it. Will there be a day when we see the young, predestined Pedro Acosta challenging the eight-time World Champion Marc Marquez in the same team? Or maybe we are about to witness Fabio Quartararo’s new legacy away from Yamaha? History is still to be written.

MotoGP 24 will be available on May 2, 2024, on PlayStation5, PlayStation4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Steam.

Celebrating a phenomenal fleet of Xbox and PC pirates who’ve set sail since launch!

As I’m sure you can imagine, when it comes to Sea of Thieves my days are full of numbers. Development costs, active servers, days until the next update… Sometimes, though, a truly extraordinary number stands out – a number like 40 million, which I’m incredibly pleased to say is the number of pirates who’ve now set sail in Sea of Thieves!

40 million players across Xbox, Windows 10 and Steam is an amazing milestone to be able to talk about, and of course it wouldn’t have happened without you – our brilliant, positive and welcoming community, who continue to surprise and impress us with your creativity and antics out on the waves.

That said, I also want to take this opportunity to offer heartfelt thanks to the team, who’ve worked so hard to deliver over a hundred free updates since launch and have plenty more excitement and innovation on the horizon. Season 12 is almost here, and the new additions like throwing knives and the Bone Caller are going to transform our sandbox yet again.

I’m also excited about getting to expand our community even further, as we’re just days away from launching on PlayStation®5 and introducing a whole new plethora of pirates to our shared world. The positivity and excitement coming out of our Closed Beta was infectious, and I can’t wait for even more fresh faces to arrive starting next week.

Before then, though, there’s time to celebrate this 40 million milestone during our imminent Gold & Glory Weekend. If you’re still working through Season 11’s 100 levels, this will be the perfect time to rake in that boosted Renown – along with gold, reputation and everything else. So take part, join us in both celebration of all our players and anticipation of those who are about to undertake their Maiden Voyage on PS5®, and we’ll see you on the seas!

  • Microsoft Flight Simulator veröffentlicht City Update 06: Southwest Germany

Microsoft Flight Simulator veröffentlicht City Update 06: Southwest Germany

    Reading Time: 6 minutes

This latest update invites Microsoft Flight Simulator aviators to experience the allure of the cities of southwest Germany’s Baden-Württemberg state.

Southwest Germany is the latest exciting enhancement to Microsoft Flight Simulator’s immersive global experience with City Update 06. This update focuses on the Southwest German state of Baden-Württemberg, the nation’s third largest state in both population and area. The Microsoft Flight Simulator team and its partners selected seven cities that best represent this diverse and vibrant region of Europe: Mannheim, Heidelberg, Karlsruhe, Stuttgart, Esslingen, and Kehl in Germany, and the French city of Strasbourg, which lies just across the border from Kehl. The update also features Friedrichshafen Airport, Baden-Württemberg’s third largest airport.

Baden-Württemberg is one of Europe’s most geographically diverse regions. The state encompasses the famed Black Forest, rivers such as the Rhine, the Danube (including its source), and the Neckar, several lakes including Lake Constance, and rich farmland and vineyards. Its cities rank as some of the most prosperous and vibrant in all of Europe and include a juxtaposition of modern architectural marvels and centuries-old historic monuments.

The carefully selected cities of City Update 06 have been recreated using the latest high resolution aerial imagery and feature high fidelity TIN (triangulated irregular network) surface modeling.

In detail, from north to south:

    Mannheim

Mannheim is located at the confluence of the Rhine and Neckar rivers at the far northern end of the state. The city, the second most populous in Baden-Württemberg, is an important center of culture, education, and commerce, and boasts 23 universities and 30 research institutions. The Mannheim region is the location of the development of some of the modern world’s most important inventions. These include the bicycle, the modern production automobile (Benz Patent Motor Car), and the first rocket-powered aircraft (Opel RAK.1).

Sights abound from the air over Mannheim, including the Mannheim Water Tower, the Mannheim Baroque Palace, and Fernmeldeturm Mannheim, a telecommunications tower.

    Heidelberg

Heidelberg is located eleven miles southeast of Mannheim along the banks of the Neckar River. It lies at the southwestern edge of the Odenwald mountain range on the eastern edge of the Upper Rhine Plain. The city is internationally recognized as a center of education and is home to Heidelberg University, Germany’s oldest university, founded in 1386, and one of the world’s most celebrated. The city is also home to several research facilities, including four Max Planck Institutes. Heidelberg is also famous for the arts, notably literature.

Heidelberg features several stunning architectural feats like Heidelberg Castle, Church of the Holy Spirit, and Old Bridge Heidelberg.

    Karlsruhe

Karlsruhe is located along the Rhine on the northern edge of the Black Forest near the French border. It is the seat of the German Federal Constitutional Court and the Federal Court of Justice. The city, the third most populous in Baden-Württemberg, has a unique layout comprising 32 streets radiating from a central palace tower that resembles a fan from above.

Set amid the stunning surroundings of the Black Forest and the Rhine, Karlsruhe is also home to some unforgettable architectural creations. These include the Karlsruhe Palace, Karlsruhe Botanical Gardens, and the State Museum of Baden.

    Stuttgart

Stuttgart, the capital of Baden-Württemberg and the most populous city is located near the middle of Baden-Württemberg along the Neckar River amid expansive plains, low hills, and swaths of forest. The city is a renowned center for the automotive industry and is home to the headquarters of Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, and several other industry giants. The city is also a global center of science and academic research and boasts eleven universities.

Stuttgart offers incredible vistas from the air like the New Palace, MHPArena, and the Stuttgart TV Tower.

    Esslingen

Esslingen is located seven miles to the south of Stuttgart along the Neckar River. Rich in history, the city dates to at least the Roman Empire. Esslingen began to flourish in the early Middle Ages and witnessed extensive expansion.

Surrounded by forested hills and vineyards, Esslingen is one of the most picturesque cities in Germany. It is home to hundreds of historic buildings including Esslinger Castle, the Inner Bridge, and Church of Our Lady.

    Kehl and Strasbourg, France

Kehl, the small town in western Baden-Württemberg on the Rhine River, lies on the Germany-France border and neighbors the larger French city of Strasbourg. With the Black Forest to its east and patchworks of agricultural fields to its north and south, the sights abound from above Kehl. Strasbourg and Kehl have strong historic ties. Strasbourg incorporated Kehl in 1678 and transformed it into a fortress. The ties endured the subsequent centuries and the two remain intimately related.

Strasbourg is a major international city and the seat of several important European institutions, including the European Parliament, the European Ombudsman of the European Union, and Eurocorps. Incredible sights throughout Strasbourg including the Strasbourg Cathedral, Place Kléber, and the Strasbourg Opera House.

    Friedrichshafen Airport (EDNY)

Friedrichshafen Airport (EDNY), also called Bodensee Airport Friedrichshafen, is an international facility located on the northeastern periphery of the German city of Friedrichshafen that lies less than two miles inland of the north shore of Lake Constance (Bodensee), one of Europe’s largest lakes.

Friedrichshafen is world renowned as one of the most important cities in the history of aviation. German airship pioneer Ferdinand von Zeppelin’s LZ 1, the world’s first successful rigid airship, took to the sky from a floating hangar on nearby Lake Constance in July of 1900. In 1908, von Zeppelin founded Luftschiffbau Zeppelin (Zeppelin Airship Company) in Friedrichshafen. The company manufactured a long line of well-known Zeppelin airships, including LZ 127 Graf Zeppelin. In addition, several other companies with aviation roots based their operations in Friedrichshafen, including ZF Friedrichshafen, Maybach, and Dornier, known for iconic flying boats
including the Dornier Do J Wal and the Dornier Do X. In 1915, an airfield was established in Friedrichshafen as a base for airships and one of Germany’s first airplane runways was constructed in 1918.

Friedrichshafen Airport is adjacent to the location of the annual AERO Friedrichshafen, one of Europe’s key general aviation conventions. The airport was hand reproduced for Microsoft Flight Simulator by iniBuilds to celebrate the launch of this update.

City Update 06: Southwest Germany is available FREE to all Microsoft Flight Simulator simmers. Ensure that your simulator is running version 1.36.2.0 (or a more recent version), download City Update 06, and explore the incredible sights of Baden-Württemberg’s cities!

Microsoft Flight Simulator is available for Xbox Series X|S and PC with Xbox Game Pass, PC Game Pass, Windows, and Steam, and on Xbox One and supported mobile phones, tablets, and lower-spec PCs via Xbox Cloud Gaming. [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E5u76lHxniI&w=500&h=281]

Hey, Grounded fans! The backyard is buzzing with excitement, and it’s all because of our latest update, „Fully Yoked“ – and yes, it’s as massive as it sounds! We’re not just talking big; it’s bulging with a ton of new content, features, and quality-of-life updates! This Fully Yoked update is here to turn your backyard into an epic adventure like never before. Let’s dive into the wonders waiting for you in this colossal update!

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q6iE__WPO98&w=500&h=281]

New Neighbors: Ant Queens and Your Decisions

The royal Ant Queens have arrived! These regal creatures are more than just a new face; they bring a new vibe to the backyard. When meeting them, it won’t be about ‚flexing your muscles‘ in combat but more about flexing your decision-making skills; it’s about choices and consequences – ally with them and gain powerful friends, betray them and brace for some severe ant-itude, or you can do the third option, which is [REDACTED]! These decisions echo across your entire experience, so choose your path wisely and watch your journey unfold with these new influential neighbors.

And the excitement doesn’t stop there – get ready for 12 new Ant Queen-inspired buildings, like the grand Ant Queen Chaises and Chandeliers as the ‚bench press‘ of ant architecture. Plus, for pet enthusiasts, there’s a heartwarming twist – the chance to adopt a baby ant pet. Remember, every choice in the ant world carries weight, shaping the relationships within this tiny, yet ‚mighty‘, kingdom.

    Backyard Adventures: Remixed!

Get ready to ‚lift‘ your adventure to new heights with our ‚New Game+‘ mode. After you conquer the mightiest of foes like the Broodmother and the Wasp Queen, you’ll unlock the REMIX.R, leading you to alternate dimensions with remixed challenges. Every playthrough is a unique experience with creatures appearing in new spots, more demanding bosses, and hidden secrets.

But beware – some creatures are infused with Raw Science, making them stronger, faster, and harder to fight. Overcome these challenges to collect special trinkets with unique properties. Plus, don’t miss out on the new ASL content, Milk Molars in randomized locations, and the all-important Yoking Station for that extra power boost in remixed yards.

Quality of Life: It’s All About the Experience

We’re always listening to our community, and this update brings quality-of-life improvements that make the backyard more enjoyable. Multiplayer fans, rejoice! Hosts can now switch saves without a hitch, keeping the adventure flowing. Lost a pet? Our ‚Recover Pets‘ feature ensures they’ll find their way back home. For our builders and creators, the new object capacity meter is a godsend for optimizing performance and sharing your world creations.

Speaking of creation, the Playground mode now offers even more control and options for crafting your unique backyard. Report rule-violating Playgrounds, quickly identify trinkets, and delve into a trove of new content – it’s all part of enhancing your Grounded experience.

Hulking Content: More Items, More Fun!

„Fully Yoked“ is not holding back. The update is packed with over 20 new items and equipment, from the Termite King Pipe Organ to decorative rugs. Achievement hunters prepare for new challenges and the game-changing ‚Antbassador‘ mutation. And we didn’t forget about Playgrounds as they received fresh news props to add more possibilities for creativity.

Wrapping Up This Final Content Update

To help show you how Grounded is now beefier than ever, continue reading the patch notes below! The ‚Fully Yoked‘ update brings endless possibilities to your backyard escapades. The game has evolved in many ways, such as adding full Japanese VO for all players to check out. On top of that, the game can now be played on multiple platforms, including the newly added PlayStation 4|5 and Nintendo Switch. Now, players across all platforms can experience this Grounded: Fully Yoked edition of the final game, together.

Lastly, a huge thank you to our incredible community. Your support and passion have shaped Grounded into what it is today. As our last planned content update, we promise to keep refining and perfecting your experience in the game so you and your friends can play in the backyard.

Stay safe, and as always – stay Grounded!

Hey Grounded fans! We are proud to present to you the „Fully Yoked“ 1.4 update: the premiere Grounded experience swole with new content.

Each of the three ant colonies now has a royal leader residing deep within their respective hills. These new Ant Queens are not fightable bosses. They instead offer you a choice: either befriend or betray with a tasty offering. Which you choose affects the rewards you receive and how the colony reacts. Some choices have cascading effects that aren’t immediately apparent…

Next up, we’ve remixed your backyard! Introducing the New Game+ mode: a complete overhaul that adds layers of complexity and challenge. Instead of finishing the game, you will have the option to enter an alternate dimension via the new REMIX.R device. Each playthrough in this mode remixes the yard in a host of ways that will give you new challenges and rewards.

Accessing New Game+ requires defeating the Broodmother, Mantis, Wasp Queen, and completing the Javamatic fight. When entering this mode, all of your existing bases, items, recipes unlocks, etc. will carry over with you.

    New Game+ Features

    Infused Creatures

In Remixed backyards, creatures can be infused with the power of Raw Science. Not only do they have more health, do more damage, and attack faster, but they also have unique properties that make them extra challenging.

    New Trinkets

The good news is that infused creatures can drop special trinkets that are also infused with Raw Science. These new trinkets also have special randomized properties. Ominent Badges can be collected again, and have new properties, and every BURG.L Chip awards a new BURG.L Chip Trinket, they too will have randomized properties to give you more options on how to build your character.

    Yoking Station +10

The Yoking Station, available at the ASL in a remixed yard, allows you to upgrade your weapons to even more powerful levels. To upgrade your weapons, you will need to find new materials and resources only found in remixed yards.

Slurp the Core with More Molars

Molars can be gathered once more, and you will need to continue to collect them to stay as swole as the creatures of the yard. In a remixed yard, the molars are now in new, randomized locations.

    New ASL Additions

There are a large number of new additions to the Science Shop. Check out the ASL for a new sign set, the Yoking Station, new weapons, equipment, and more, that can only be purchased in a remixed yard. To help with purchasing the new items there are new Raw Science spawn locations, and MIX.Rs have increased rewards.

    Even More

There are other changes that are made to the yard in a remixed world, including more loot chests, different candy, and some other surprises.

The game can now be played additional platforms, including the newly added PlayStation 4|5 and Nintendo Switch. Players across all platforms can experience this Grounded: Fully Yoked edition of the final game, together, with crossplay!

After working for various companies as a software engineer in Ottawa, and also working remotely with Arduino, he started looking for a new way to use his expertise with embedded and mobile devices. There’s not much better place than Arm for that, and when an acquaintance of his mentioned a position coming up, he jumped at the chance.

He’d already worked on a Raspberry Pi Pico project before joining Arm – if you cast your mind back to 2021 around the time Pico was released, he built a way to add Ethernet to Pico via the PIO. It was even featured on the blog. Since then, he’s been putting out software and hardware projects of varying levels of complexity, and has really shown off the power of Raspberry Pi in the process.

    Sandeep’s builds

    Give a plant a personality

“[A favourite project of mine] was using Pico W to create a plant that texts you when it needs water, after it’s been watered, good morning/night, and random jokes,” Sandeep says. “It was the first time I used MicroPython, and it was fun to use the Pico W to give a plant a personality.”

    See sound in real time

Building on the Pico microphone project, this project shows how you can create cool visualisers for sound using a display also hooked up to Pico. These specific visualisations are audio spectrograms, which display sound as amplitude over time for cool visual effects.

    Create a USB microphone

Pico can do a lot with its PIO capabilities – and it also has an ADC (analogue-to-digital converter) onboard. Combining the ability to connect to a system as a USB device while also listening to a microphone means you can create a custom Pico-powered mic. It’s an interesting and fairly cheap way to add a mic to a computer.

  • Microsoft Flight Simulator Releases Local Legend 15: The Dornier Do 31

Microsoft Flight Simulator Releases Local Legend 15: The Dornier Do 31

    Reading Time: 6 minutes

Microsoft Flight Simulator pilots can now fly one of aviation’s greatest icons of innovation.

    A MONUMENT OF AVIATION INGENUITY

The Dornier Do 31 is a jet-powered, vertical take-off and landing (VTOL), experimental military aircraft developed by the West German aviation manufacturer and historically renowned as the only jet-powered VTOL utility / transport aircraft ever created and flown. Although Dornier only produced three experimental prototypes and never entered serial production, the Do 31 remains an enduring monument of aerospace ingenuity.

    BORN OF COLD WAR IMPERATIVE

The distinctive Do 31 was born out of an ambitious Cold War initiative by the West German military to create an eminently resilient air force. An initial attack by the Soviet Bloc focused on air bases and runways throughout
West Germany, grounding their airplanes. To counter this threat, the West Germans hatched a plan in the early 1960s to create a new air force composed primarily of jet-powered VTOL aircraft. Such airplanes could operate out of traditional air bases, expeditionary airfields, or roads and highways, including Autobahns—any small stretch of concrete or asphalt would work.

The West German military’s plan included three VTOL aircraft: a fighter / interceptor: the EWR VJ 101; a surface attack platform: the VFW VAK-191B; and a large utility aircraft that could transport troops and cargo.

    AN ENGINEERING MARVEL

While helicopters had proven their utility by the early 1960s, especially for military operations, they were limited in both speed and lift ability. Developing a jet-powered transport aircraft, however, presented engineers
with tremendous hurdles like generating and directing adequate thrust to vertically lift an aircraft, transitioning it to horizontal flight, and then landing it vertically.

By the early 1960s, companies interested in jet-powered VTOL aircraft operation had proven the concept could work with experimental models. The Short SC.1, developed by United Kingdom aviation company Short Brothers, took its maiden flight on May 26, 1958. The Short SC.1 was followed by the first flight of the British Hawker Siddeley P.1127, the progenitor to the Hawker Siddeley Harrier, the world’s first production VTOL fighter / attack jet. Both were engineering breakthroughs that took years of development. The transport aircraft the West German military envisioned would be much larger, dramatically increasing the complexity. Dornier, famed for their flying boats and airliners, undertook the ambitious challenge in February, 1962, when the company and the West German military formally launched the project, designated the Do 31.

While Dornier had never built a VTOL aircraft, the company’s engineers had gained experience with short take-off and landing (STOL) exercises with their Do 29. That airplane, which took its maiden flight in late 1958, was an experimental, twin-engine, piston-powered, high-wing monoplane that used tilting engine-propeller systems to boost lift for take-off. The jet powered Do 31, intended to carry up to 36 combat loaded troops, 7,700 pounds of cargo, or some combination thereof, proved far more complex. It required the company to develop some of the most advanced aviation technology to that point in history including novel powerplant designs, high-strength airframe componentry, and an innovative flight control computer.

Dornier built three airframes with a group designation Do 31 E (“E” for “Experimental”): the Do 31 E1, the Do 31 E2, and the Do 31 E3. The E1 and the E3 were flying prototypes, while the E2 was a ground-based testbed.

The Do 31 featured a high-mounted main wing, a cruciform empennage, a capacious fuselage with a ramp-loading cargo system, and retractable tricycle landing gear. Its primary power source: two Rolls-Royce Pegasus BE.53/2 turbofan engines, each of which could produce up to 15,500 pounds of thrust. Each Pegasus was housed in a nacelle, one under each side of the main wing, and thrust from each was directed through four rotating exhaust ports called thrust vectoring nozzles. For complementary thrust and redundancy purposes—should one of the Pegasus engines fail mid-flight—Dornier crafted wingtip-mounted secondary thrust systems. Each wingtip featured a nacelle that housed four vertically oriented Rolls-

Royce RB-162-4D turbojet engines; each engine could generate up to 4,400 pounds of thrust, for a total of 17,600 pounds of thrust per wingtip. In total, the Do 31 was powered by ten engines capable of an aggregate 66,200 pounds of thrust. Only a few other aircraft in history have comprised ten or more engines, including Dornier’s Do X, a flying boat that was powered by 12 piston engines.

To provide control of the Do 31 throughout all its flight regimes, Dornier developed an extremely critical hybrid analog-digital computer, the DO-960. The aircraft simply would be too unstable to function without an adequate flight computer that could continuously solve a series of complex equations to maintain controlled flight. Digital computer technology and integrated circuit design were still in their infancy at this point and not fast enough to perform the specific types of solutions necessary (the microprocessor had yet to be developed). Dornier engineers solved this immense challenge by devising a novel computer system that fused aspects of analog calculation with components of digital computation.

The DO-960 maintained aircraft stability by taking pilot inputs and controlling flight surfaces, power output of each of the aircraft’s ten engines, the orientation of its thrust vector nozzles, and amount of bleed air ducted to nozzles in the aircraft’s tail. The Do 31 lifted off and hovered with downward-vectored thrust from the Pegasus engines combined with thrust from its wingtip turbojets. It then transitioned to horizontal flight through the rearward rotation of the main engine’s thrust vector nozzles.

The DO-960 remains one of history’s most notable computer developments and a brilliant example of technological innovation born of necessity. Although hidden within the confines of the unique aircraft’s form, the computer was one of the Do 31’s most crucial, and notable, features.

    A NEW BREED TAKES FLIGHT

After years of development and ground testing, the Do 31 took its maiden flight in early 1967. The first prototype of the airframe, the Do 31 E1, lifted off on February 10, 1967, powered by just its two main engines. In July of 1967, the Do 31 E3 took to the sky using all ten of its engines and performed a hover. The aircraft flew increasingly complex and advanced operations during successive tests in the months that followed including moving backward while hovering and rolls while in horizontal flight. The demonstrations marked not just the initial flights of a new aircraft, but the first operation of an entirely new breed of aircraft, a jet-powered VTOL transport. The Do 31 wowed spectators at airshows and set several flight records for its class—of which it was the only member.

Despite the successes and prospects for commercial adoption in addition to military roles, the Do 31 was abandoned in the early 1970s. The concept of a jet-powered VTOL Air Force proved too costly and complex to implement. It remains the first and only jet-powered VTOL transport ever to fly.

Piloted by two, the Do 31 had a range of 1,120 miles, a service ceiling of 35,100 feet above sea level, and climbed at a rate of 3,780 feet per minute. The aircraft cruised at 348 miles per hour with a top speed of 377 mph.

NOW AVAILABLE FOR MICROSOFT FLIGHT SIMULATOR PILOTS

The Microsoft Flight Simulator Dornier Do 31 has been expertly recreated for aviators to enjoy throughout the world. Experience the thrill of lifting off vertically, transitioning to high-speed forward flight, and then coming to a
hover with precision in this masterpiece of aviation technology. The sky is calling!

The Dornier Do 31 offers seven liveries: E1 Experimental, E3 Experimental, Olive Green, Green Camouflage, Marine Search & Rescue, Xbox Aviators Club, and Aviators Club. It is available today for $14.99.

Microsoft Flight Simulator is available for Xbox Series X|S and PC with Xbox Game Pass, PC Game Pass, Windows, and Steam, and on Xbox One and supported mobile phones, tablets, and lower-spec PCs via Xbox Cloud Gaming. • How the Legendary Kombatant Ermac Made His Grand Return in Mortal Kombat 1

How the Legendary Kombatant Ermac Made His Grand Return in Mortal Kombat 1

    Reading Time: 5 minutes

    Summary

    • Ermac joins the Mortal Kombat 1 roster today as part of the early access period for Kombat Pack owners, followed by wide availability on April 23.
    • For Mortal Kombat 1, NetherRealm wanted to further evolve the visual presentation of Ermac by leaning heavily into certain horror inspirations.
    • You can pick up the Mortal Kombat 1: Kombat Pack here on the Xbox Store.

On the way to the cafeteria at the NetherRealm Studios offices, we have a large poster of Ermac hanging on the wall. Seeing it often reminds me how far he has evolved over the years. Back in the early days before the Internet, rumors often ran rampant about him and drove all kinds of speculation, particularly in the arcades. In the first Mortal Kombat arcade game, there was a diagnostic called ERMACS short for “Error Macro” that appeared underneath the number of “Reptile Appearances” and “Reptile Battles,” and it was therefore assumed by sleuthing fans that there must be a hidden character in the game. Over time, these rumors had taken on a life of their own and wound up being the catalyst to Ermac’s eventual creation and inclusion as a playable fighter in Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3.

    Mortal Kombat Ermac Screenshot

Since the character’s arrival, Ermac has always been a vessel for souls and would use these souls to manipulate their energy for his own devious purposes. For Mortal Kombat 1, we wanted to further evolve the visual presentation of Ermac by leaning heavily into certain horror inspirations, and then explore the idea that Ermac has been haunted by unique souls he has captured throughout his existence. The collective of tortured souls include: the Witch, the Old Woman, the Monster, and the Soldier, each one playing a key role throughout Ermac’s move set. For Ermac’s classic Lift special move, the Witch’s soul bursts outward from Ermac to lift the opponent and slam them to the ground. The idea that these unique souls manifest themselves throughout his attacks is a common theme we wanted to showcase.

To me, one of the most compelling aspects to the design and implementation of Ermac was the challenge he presented to us. The last time we saw Ermac in a Mortal Kombat game as a playable fighter was in Mortal Kombat X, and we are lightyears ahead in terms of our capabilities from a visual perspective since then. For us, this meant an opportunity to evolve the look of his soul energy to create intricate visual effects-based attacks that help sell the unique telekinesis power he possesses. The inherent challenge is to ensure the visual elements are impactful, blend well with the gameplay elements, and are readable to the player. This is something the design and visual effects teams are constantly iterating on.

    Mortal Kombat Ermac Screenshot

Gameplay wise, Ermac stands out as a character with interesting combo potential and routes, especially from the air. In terms of special moves, he employs a variety of his mainstay special attacks as well as new additions for Mortal Kombat 1. One of the main design goals was to evolve and showcase his classic attacks in a distinctive way while at the same time creating new special moves that both serve his gameplay plan while giving players a fresh experience. For instance, Ermac can still perform his Teleport attack but can now initiate it from either the air or ground then cancel it into an air or ground version just before he teleports acting as a mind game with options for different setups.

    Mortal Kombat Ermac Screenshot

One of his new special moves is a Mana Shield where one of his souls creates a shield around him whereby incoming damage depletes his super meter instead of his health. Additionally, he has another new attack where he violently ejects souls upward, capable of launching the opponent and allowing Ermac to dash cancel out of. Lastly, one of my personal favorites and something players will want to check out is a brutality we created off Ermac’s Lift special move, which is a clear nod to his telekinesis Fatality from Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3.

Working on klassic characters for a new Mortal Kombat game is almost a sacred responsibility, let alone one of the ninjas. I joined the team many years ago for the first Injustice game and I will always remember the surreal moment working on Scorpion attacks for the first time. This responsibility is a sentiment shared by everyone on the team. We are all very pleased to bring Ermac back in Mortal Kombat 1 and hope players enjoy playing him as much as the team did working on him.

  • Spinning Blades and Brutal Mayhem: New Weapons for Dead Island 2’s SOLA Expansion

Spinning Blades and Brutal Mayhem: New Weapons for Dead Island 2’s SOLA Expansion

    Reading Time: 9 minutes

    Summary

    • Two new legendary weapons will be introduced with Dead Island 2’s second expansion.
    • The Ripper resurrects a Dead Island classic, while the Saw Blade Launcher amps up ranged combat.
    • Dead Island 2 SOLA expansion to launched on April 17, 2024, for Xbox Series X|S.

Dead Island 2’s upcoming SOLA expansion introduces a whole new area and storyline set around the ultimate California festival. But when the mosh pit’s crowded with zombies and the backstage is a bloodbath, you know you’re going to need new tools to clean up the mess.

Luckily, SOLA packs in two new legendary weapons, giving you even more ways to slice, dice, disembowel, decapitate, and dismember your decomposing zombie foes.

Dead Island 2 players will be familiar with F.L.E.S.H., the game’s brutally ingenious procedural damage system, which enables limbs to be lopped off, skulls crushed, and organs splattered in spectacularly gory style. The two new legendaries are a love letter to F.L.E.S.H, taking the carnage to a whole new level.

    Crafting the Ripper

Long-term fans of the series will be delighted to see the return of the mighty Ripper, repurposed as a flagship weapon. “It’s a homage to the weapon upgrade from the first Dead Island,” explains Dambusters’ Combat Game Designer Haris Iqbal. “But from our end, we wanted to give it that Dead Island 2 signature appeal.”

    Dead Island 2 SOLA Weapon

The team evolved the original concept of a baseball bat, augmented it with a spinning blade, and made it into the ultimate machine for cutting through an undead mob. “Ultimately, we want to add to all the gore-filled spectacle with our new legendaries,” says Iqbal. “But also make sure that every weapon, especially the legendaries, feels like its got its own interesting micro-mechanics and loops.”

    Dead Island 2 SOLA Weapon

With the Ripper, that means a weapon that feels like a bat when you first start swinging, but with a blade that keeps revving up, spinning faster and faster until you’re pulling off impossibly gory kills and finishers.

It not only gives you a new way to engage with the game’s brutal melee combat, but also a new way to showcase what the F.L.E.S.H. system can do, delivering the kind of ultra-violent slapstick that’s so core to Dead Island 2’s appeal.

    Building the Saw Blade Launcher

The second weapon is the Saw Blade Launcher, a multi-functional ranged weapon that fires out industrial sawblades capable of tearing through a mob of walkers and cutting the toughest apex zombies down to size.

    Dead Island 2 SOLA Weapon

“It’s a very fresh weapon for us,” says Iqbal. “We’re taking the ranged weapon in a different direction this time around. We really wanted to emphasize the F.L.E.S.H. system and let players play around with it a whole lot more.”

To this end, slayers can fire out the deadly, saw-toothed discs either one at a time, or charge all their shots and release them in a single burst – perfect for wrecking multiple flesh-munching menaces or chopping through the limbs of the tougher brutes.

    Dead Island 2 SOLA Weapon

“We’re giving players more options with a single weapon,” Iqbal notes. “With previous ranged weapons, you could shoot off limbs. But with the sawblade launcher, we really wanted to make it much easier to do. It gives you a new way to interact with the F.L.E.S.H sandbox and, besides, it’s just fun to use.”

    Time to mix it up

“We really try to look at the player’s fantasies,” adds Lead Game Designer Matt Abbott. “These new weapons might be a bit more potent moment to moment than we’re usually comfortable with, but how can we put in the mechanics to give players that kind of pinnacle fantasy without it being too easy? They can charge up multiple blades then fire them out, and chop a zombie clean in half!”

What’s more, the new weapons encourage players to mix things up and explore different ways to slay. “Each weapon feels like it’s got a play style you might want to lean into as well, to get the most out of it,” says Abbott; Iqbal agrees. “It’s always about promoting varied attacks, and allowing players to really engage with each weapon, moment to moment.”

The team can’t wait to see how you make use of the new legendaries or the other weapons waiting in the new expansion. “I think it’s always cool to see the brutal creativity of our players, and see what they’re doing,” says Iqbal. “I know there are dedicated players who spend hours hacking away at zombies with different weapons just to see how far they can push the system. That excites us and inspires us to keep pushing and give them something fresh.”

Dead Island 2’s second expansion, SOLA, will launch April 17, 2024, for Xbox Series X|S. It’s also included with the Gold Edition and the Dead Island 2 Expansion Pass.

  • Microsoft Flight Simulator Releases City Update 06: Southwest Germany

Microsoft Flight Simulator Releases City Update 06: Southwest Germany

Global Impact: Empowering young people in Kenya and South Africa

    Reading Time: 5 minutes

We work with mission-aligned educational organisations all over the world to support young people’s computing education. In 2023 we established four partnerships in Kenya and South Africa with organisations Coder:LevelUp, Blue Roof, Oasis Mathare, and Tech Kidz Africa, which support young people in underserved communities. Our shared goal is to support educators to establish and sustain extracurricular Code Clubs and CoderDojos in schools and community organisations. Here we share insights into the impact the partnerships are having.

Evaluating the impact of the training

In the partnerships we used a ‘train the trainer’ model, which focuses on equipping our partners with the knowledge and skills to train and support educators and learners. This meant that we trained a group of educators from each partner, enabling them to then run their own training sessions for other educators so they can set up coding clubs and run coding sessions. These coding sessions aim to increase young people’s skills and confidence in computing and programming.

We also conducted an evaluation of the impact of our work in these partnerships. We shared two surveys with educators (one shortly after they completed their initial training, a second for when they were running coding sessions), and another survey for young people to fill in during their coding sessions. In two of the partnerships, we also conducted interviews and focus groups with educators and young people.

Although we received lots of valuable feedback, only a low proportion of participants responded to our surveys, so the data may not be representative of the experience of all participating educators.

New opportunities to learn to code

Following our training, our partners themselves trained 332 educators across Kenya and South Africa to work directly in schools and communities running coding sessions. This led to the setup of nearly 250 Code Clubs and CoderDojos and additional coding sessions in schools and communities, reaching more than 11,500 young people.

As a result, access to coding and programming has increased in areas where this provision would otherwise not be available. One educator told us:

“We found it extremely beneficial, because a lot of our children come from areas in the community where they barely know how to read and write, let alone know how to use a computer… [It provides] the foundation, creating a fun way of approaching the computer as opposed to it being daunting.”

    Curiosity, excitement and increased confidence

We found encouraging signs of the impact of this work on young people.

Nearly 90% of educators reported seeing an increase in young people’s computing skills, with over half of educators reporting that this increase was large. Over three quarters of young people who filled in our survey reported feeling confident in coding and computer programming.

The young people spoke enthusiastically about what they had learned and the programs they had created. They told us they felt inspired to keep learning, linking their interests to what they wanted to do in coding sessions. Interests included making dolls, games, cartoons, robots, cars, and stories.

When we spoke with educators and young people, a key theme that emerged was the enthusiasm and curiosity of the young people to learn more. Educators described how motivated they felt by the excitement of the young people. Young people particularly enjoyed finding out the role of programming in the world around them, from understanding traffic lights to knowing more about the games they play on their phones.

    One educator told us:

“…students who knew nothing about technology are getting empowered.”

This confidence is particularly encouraging given that educators reported a low level of computer literacy among young people at the start of the coding sessions. One educator described how coding sessions provided an engaging hook to support teaching basic IT skills, such as mouse skills and computer-related terms, alongside coding.

    Addressing real-world problems

One educator gave an example of young people using what they are learning in their coding club to solve real-world problems, saying:

“It’s life-changing because some of those kids and the youths that you are teaching… they’re using them to automate things in their houses.”

Many of these young people live in informal settlements where there are frequent fires, and have started using skills they learned in the coding sessions to automate things in their homes, reducing the risk of fires. For example, they are programming a device that controls fans so that they switch on when the temperature gets too high, and ways to switch appliances such as light bulbs on and off by clapping.

    Continuing to improve our support

From the gathered feedback, we also learned some useful lessons to help improve the quality of our offer and support to our partners. For example, educators faced challenges including lack of devices for young people, and low internet connectivity. As we continue to develop these partnerships, we will work with partners to make use of our unplugged activities that work offline, removing the barriers created by low connectivity.

We are continuing to develop the training we offer and making sure that educators are able to access our other training and resources. We are also using the feedback they have given us to consider where additional training and support may be needed. Future evaluations will further strengthen our evidence and provide us with the insights we need to continue developing our work and support more educators and young people.

Our thanks to our partners at Coder:LevelUp, Blue Roof, Oasis Mathare, and Tech Kidz Africa for sharing our mission to enable young people to realise their full potential through the power of computing and digital technologies. As we continue to build partnerships to support Code Clubs and CoderDojos across South Africa and Kenya, it is heartening to hear first-hand accounts of the positive impact this work has on young people.

If your organisation would like to partner with us to bring computing education to young people you support, please send us a message with the subject ‘Partnerships’.
