How Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 Will Forge You into a Soldier in the 41st Millennium

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

    Summary

    • Creative Director Oliver Hollis on bringing galactic warfare to life in Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2.
    • The core intention from the outset has been to give players a taste of what it’s like to be a Space Marine.
    • Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 launches for Xbox Series X|S on September 9, 2024, and is available to be wish listed on the Xbox Store.

The beauty of the Warhammer 40,000 universe is that nothing is simple, nothing is clear cut, and it’s made the production of Space Marine 2 an exciting and rewarding experience. How do you make two-and-half-meter tall psycho-indoctrinated killers into relatable characters that an audience will root for? This is the type of fascinating question you’re faced with when you involve yourself in the Warhammer 40,000 franchise, and I’m here to tell you more about this exciting endeavour!

    Guiding Principles

Our core intention from the outset has been to give you a taste of what it’s like to be a Space Marine. To achieve this, we need gameplay that makes you feel empowered to a level far beyond your average shooter. Everything, from weapons, abilities, and combat mechanics, to sounds and visuals, needs to be infused with the immense power of a Primaris Space Marine. An example of how we’ve handled this is the lack of a cover system in the game. Space Marines rarely use cover because their armour is so good. Typically, forward is the only direction that matters.

Our second core pillar has been to convey the sense of scale that you find in all Warhammer 40,000 literature – you’ll find yourself equipped with devastating weapons, but also at the center of a brutal battle for supremacy. The carnage you witness must embody the epic scale of Warhammer 40,000 warfare. We’re talking about conflicts that take place on a galactic level; whole solar systems consumed by war. You can already get a glimpse of this in the trailers we’ve released so far, with shots showing the sheer number of enemies, the allied forces holding them back, the massive artillery bombardments and the battles raging in all three dimensions.

Finally, we’re committed to making Space Marine 2 feel like a Warhammer 40,000 story. This means working very closely with Games Workshop, along with some of their Black Library authors, to ensure that the story is faithful to the universe from which it is born.

  • Harness the power and connectivity of your Arduino UNO R4 WiFi with this IoT lamp

Harness the power and connectivity of your Arduino UNO R4 WiFi with this IoT lamp

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

It can be tough to get started with building an Internet of Things (IoT) project from the ground-up, as getting connected, serving a webpage, and managing other devices can all be a challenge to a beginner. This is why the YouTuber known as “Mario’s Ideas” made an end-to-end tutorial that details everything one might need to build a smart RGB lamp.

Because the Arduino UNO R4 WiFi contains an ESP32-S3 chip for its Wi-Fi radio and Renesas RA4M1 microcontroller, it was the perfect candidate. Mario’s sketch begins with a call to initialize the Wi-Fi module before attempting to connect to his local access point. Once finished, it enters a loop that continuously checks if a client has connected to the web server, and if one has, reads the requested path while also seeing if the string contains “/H” to denote an “ON” command to set the LED.

Toggling an LED is useful, but Mario wanted to take things a step further by building a tangible — in this case a lamp. His 3D-printed enclosure features a recessed base and translucent cube for diffusing the light emitted by a grid of NeoPixels. Controlling the color was just as easy since any browser could still send a request path containing a color and get back the lamp’s updated status.

To see more about this IoT lamp project, you can watch Mario’s video below!

  • Epic’s proposed remedies are bad for everyone but EpicEpic’s proposed remedies are bad for everyone but EpicVP, Government Affairs & Public Policy

Epic’s proposed remedies are bad for everyone but EpicEpic’s proposed remedies are bad for everyone but EpicVP, Government Affairs & Public Policy

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Last month, Epic Games asked a U.S. federal court to impose harmful and unwarranted changes to Android and Google Play that would undermine the privacy, security, and overall experience of consumers, developers, and device manufacturers. Not only do Epic’s demands go far beyond the scope of the recent U.S. trial verdict — which we will be challenging — but they are also unnecessary due to the settlement we reached last year with State Attorneys General from every state and multiple territories.

We recently shared with the court why we strongly object to Epic’s proposal — and at a hearing later this week, economic experts will reinforce the reasons why Epic’s proposed remedies are problematic and unnecessary. This includes:

    • Epic’s proposal puts Android users’ security at risk on third party app stores: Epic’s proposal removes Google’s ability to implement trust and safety measures that keep Android users safe. Unlike iOS, Android enables OEMs to preload third party app stores and allows users to download additional app stores directly. To maintain a positive user experience while also providing choice, Android incorporates common-sense measures to protect user security and privacy – measures which would no longer be allowed under this proposal.
    • Epic’s proposal hurts the privacy of Android users: Under Epic’s proposal, Google would be forced to tell any and all third party app stores which apps a user has installed on their phone through Google Play. It would wrongly expose a person’s personal apps usage – even for topics like religion, politics, or health — for Epic’s gain. This is a clear violation of user privacy.
    • Epic’s proposal leaves people vulnerable to malicious apps: Unlike on iOS, Android users have the option to sideload apps, meaning they can install an app directly from a developer’s website without going through an app store. We’ve implemented important protections to ensure users are still protected while enjoying choice in apps. However, Epic’s proposal would force Google to remove them — severely curtailing our ability to protect users from potentially malicious apps.
    • Epic’s proposal reduces developers’ control over their app distribution: Developers have many options for app distribution on Android, but when they choose to use Google Play, they know the trust and safety rules that keep our platform safe. However, Epic wants to force all other developers to publish their intellectual property through multiple channels without their consent. Under this proposal, developers may suddenly find their app on a store without the same user protections or in a store that carries inappropriate or offensive content they do not want to be associated with.
    • Epic’s proposal cuts off key business opportunities for developers: As part of the State Settlement, we have already agreed not to sign wide-ranging exclusivity agreements with developers to launch their full app catalog on Google Play. But Epic wants to entirely restrict Google’s ability to offer any financial incentives to developers to distribute their apps in the Play store, even on a non-exclusive and app-by-app basis. Epic’s proposed remedy would also prevent Google from working with developers to provide any exclusive content through apps distributed in the Play Store. This is a common strategy used to engage users and grow a developer’s business, yet Epic is seeking to limit this important opportunity for all developers.
    • Epic’s proposal hurts device manufacturers: Part of the State AG settlement ensures that any app store is free to compete for placement on an Android device. But Epic’s proposal would cut Google Play out of this process, reducing competition and therefore enabling rival app stores to underbid. This would reduce what OEMs can earn from pre-installation and placement on their devices, cutting into already narrow OEM margins in a way that could raise consumer prices.

Epic’s proposed remedies were all clearly designed to only benefit itself. They would harm the Android ecosystem, and competition in general, by creating security and privacy risks, depriving developers and OEMs of key business opportunities, and undercutting Google’s ability to support our investments in Android and Google Play. We will continue to vigorously defend our right to a sustainable business model that enables us to keep people safe, partner with developers and OEMs to innovate and grow their businesses, and keep the Android ecosystem thriving and healthy for everyone.

Cassette Beasts Multiplayer Update is Out Now

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

    Hey, Folks!

We’re so excited to be able to say our new Cassette Beasts

    Multiplayer Update is now out!

This new update brings some cool new ways to play together with friends:

    • Party-up with up to eight players, all visible in your world as you travel.
    • Battle your friends in 1v1, and even assign custom rules to your battle such as enabling/disabling sticker attributes.
    • Trade tapes with each other.
    • Team up for raid battles against Rogue Fusions.

Exciting right? Let’s get into it!

    CB exterior

Feeling lonely? Now you can bring your friends!

Eight players can connect via a shared code (even across different platforms) to play together in Online Mode as you all progress through the story of Cassette Beasts – even if you’re in wildly different places! You can follow along with everyone’s progress by watching them on the world map, you’ll even receive progress notifications on how other players are doing and what milestones they’ve completed. What a perfect time to text them a bunch of cryptic emojis or knowing winks. If you get stuck in any section, your buddies can track you down and give you a helping hand on how to progress. Don’t worry, though, even when connected, your game is safe from outside interference and does not impact the story or cutscenes in the current game.

By easily locating your friends on the map, you can even send them direct invitations for the next neat features coming with this whopper of an update, so without further ado, let’s talk about Raids!

Now you can take on Roaming Fusions with your friends! These are powerful Beasts waiting to take on your team in the open world of New Wirral. Only by teaming up with your fellow adventurers will you have a chance to defeat them. Surely, you’re asking, why risk life and limb on these titans of Beast-kind? Great rewards, is why! From challenging, and defeating, these Rogue Fusions you will receive the new “Cyber Material” item, which, after showing it to Captain Codey, can be used to “hack” a Rogue Fusion to turn it into a bootleg. If you’re looking for a specific Bootleg, what better way to collect them than with the help of a buddy!

Speak of your buddies, it’s time to move on to… 1v1 Battling!

    CB battle

Have an on-going bet with your friends about who has the best Beast squad? Now you can settle it with in-game, 1v1 battles! Take on another and prove your Beast-besties have nothing on your team!

Not only can you go head-to-head with your rivals, you can also set custom rules to make things interesting. Just off the top of our domes, here are some ways to make things a little more challenging when battling your buds:

    • Levels: You can keep your current levels or temporarily set both players to either level 50 or level 100 to make the battle fair.
    • Fusion: You can enable or disable fusion for battle, as well as set whether players can use “Fusion Power” (if they’ve unlocked it with their current partner)
    • Sticker Attributes: You can enable or disable Sticker Attributes for a battle.
    • Duplicate Stickers: You can enable or disable the effects of having multiple versions of the same sticker applied to a tape.

And on Stickering, the next to tackle on our list is… Trading!

Have you been drooling over your friend’s custom starter Beast with the +1 slot but have yet to find that sticker in your game? That’s where Trading comes in. You’ll now be able to swap Beasts with your friends, or even random players in Randomizer Mode. If you’ve connected via Online Play, you can select the player you’d like to trade with on the world map and ask them to swap Beasts (which includes any stickers placed on the tapes). Finally, no more Beast-envy when you can share your prized Cassettes!

Well, you get the jist – experiment and see what fun restrictions you can set for yourselves!

We’re so excited to see your screenshots and best team moments! Share your Multiplayer memories with us by tagging us @byttenstudio or, better yet, join our Discord where you can chat with other friends, find groups to join, and share your biggest and best moments.

    See you in New Wirral!

  • How HotShot Became XDefiant’s Most Anticipated Game Mode

How HotShot Became XDefiant’s Most Anticipated Game Mode

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

Competitive arena shooter XDefiant is now available to play for free on Xbox Series X|S, kicking off with a preseason and featuring five Ubisoft franchise-inspired factions – Phantoms, Cleaners, Libertad, Echelon, and DedSec – each with their own unique abilities and skills. Five game modes will also be available at launch: Occupy, Domination, Zone Control, Escort, and HotShot. The last mode in particular has become a hit with players during the game’s early access betas, and Associate Creative Director Scott Crisostomo and Systems Designer Patrick “Aches” Price are here to tell us more.

In HotShot, players must not only eliminate their opponents, but also pick up the bounty tokens that they drop. Picking up a fallen foe’s bounty secures a point for your team, while picking up a bounty from your own fallen teammate denies your opponents that point. The player currently holding the most bounties in the match becomes the HotShot and is marked for all players to see, but also gains enhanced movement and aim down sights (ADS) speed, and, most importantly, earns three points for every bounty they pick up.

“It was a blast to observe,” said Price after last year’s Closed Beta. “Players loved becoming a super soldier with super-fast movements and ADS speed. Watching how players were playing HotShot showed that we were on track when it came to create a mode that players hadn’t seen before.”

Due to the unique abilities of its factions, XDefiant doesn’t feature a Team Deathmatch mode (TDM) at launch. Instead, the developers saw HotShot as a way to satisfy the free-flowing run-and-gun pace of TDM, while still keeping the objective-based philosophy that their faction gameplay was designed for.

“HotShot became almost like a moving objective,” says Crisostomo. “You want to pick up the other team’s bounties, but when there’s an enemy HotShot, you want to take them out. And when your team has a HotShot, you want to protect them.”

Because bounties are worth three times as many points when picked up by the HotShot, what could have been a freeform game mode has an extra layer of depth and strategy. “The smart play is to actually run as a group and don’t try to race to pick everything up,” says Crisostomo. “Instead, get your kills, but call the HotShot over to pick them up.”

With enhanced movement and aiming speed, the HotShot is the most powerful player in the match, but they’ve also got a massive target on their back. Not only does eliminating the HotShot stop the opposing team from cashing in on the sizable point bonus for bounties, but the HotShot also drops three times as many bounties when they’re killed. “We felt like players should be rewarded when they take out the HotShot, since the HotShot has so many advantages,” says Crisostomo. “That means taking out the HotShot and picking up their bounties almost guarantees you’ll be the next HotShot.”

XDefiant launches with four other game modes: In Occupy, teams must earn points by capturing an ever-changing zone. In Domination, teams fight for control of three static zones. Escort sees one team attempt to move a package along a linear path while the other team tries to stall them. Zone Control challenges attackers to capture sequential zones as they progress through a map, while defenders must fight to stop them until time runs out.

Don’t miss your chance to be the HotShot, XDefiant is available now on Xbox Series X|S!

Producer Jun Song joined us recently to share new details on what players can look forward to when Future Saga arrives in Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 later this week.

Bandai Namco Entertainment America: When did you start planning new chapter Future Saga?

Producer Jun Song: It was considered in conjunction with the plan for the major update that was implemented last October. To ensure that Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 will continue to be enjoyed for a long time, we added new content and made various modifications in the October major update so that all users can enjoy it equally.

For similar reasons, we thought it was necessary to provide a fresh and exciting story for users equally by entering a new Saga. The message “Take a Step Towards the Future” expresses the meaning that with the October update and the upcoming new saga — Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 will break from the past and move on to the next “future.”

Bandai: What is the concept of the “Future Saga”?

Song: There are two major points: To settle the battle against “Fu” and to depict the struggle for the “future” of the world. This concept is also expressed in the name of DLC.

    Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 Screenshot

Until now, Fu has often conducted experiments out of curiosity, causing trouble for the protagonists and other Time Patrollers. However, since Fu himself was not doing it out of malice, the protagonists ended up getting flabbergasted every time.

In Future Saga, however, Fu acts with a clear purpose. And as a result, the battle will develop into a battle for the “future” of not only the “Time Rift” but also that of the protagonists and the entire world.

Note for Readers: The Time Rift is a crack in history that has been created by repeated altered history. The inside is an alien space, but the events that take place there, for better or worse, do not affect the “history” of the world itself.

The Future Saga will be comprised of 4 chapters, each of them has its own story but would be most enjoyable to know the story of Fu if you play all the chapters.

What will happen to you and Fu as you throw yourself into the battle for the future? We hope you check out Chapter 1 of the “Fu”ture Saga to find out!

    Bandai: Who is “Fu” anyway?

Song: Fu made its first appearance in the extra mission of the paid DLC Extra DLC Pack 2. He’s an experimental mutant created by Dabura, who utilized the cells of his sister Demon Queen, Towa, and Demon King, Mira, to revive the Demon Realm.

    Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 Screenshot

However, Fu only has interest in experimentation and research, and not in the revival of the Demon Realm. Due to this, he rebelled against Dabura, and since then, he has repeatedly conducted experiments (incidents) and research on “energy produced by altered history.” The protagonists have found themselves caught in the trenches in the process.

Bandai: What is the new form of “Ultra Supervillain” that has been newly introduced?

Song: Throughout the Xenoverse series, the “Villainous Mode” and “Supervillain” sorceries have been a source of trouble for the protagonists and Time Patrollers, but in Future Saga, the “Ultra Supervillain” sorceries are introduced.

While it can provide tremendous energy, it is also very dangerous because its impact on history is so great, but it seems that Fu intends to harness this power. This “Ultra Supervillain” will be an important key throughout the Saga, so we hope you will pay attention to it.

    Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 Screenshot

Also, the relationship between Fu and the protagonists is also of great interest. Fu and the protagonists have formed a strange friendship through past incidents, and this Saga will focus on the relationship between the two.

Bandai: Any additional comments you’d like to share?

Song: Future Saga will tell a story that Dragon Ball fans will be excited about, but the DLC is also designed to be enjoyable for those who have stopped playing after clearing the game.

We are also preparing a lot of additional content for the free update that will be delivered at the same time, so we hope that you will take this opportunity to play Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2.

    Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 Screenshot

The concept of the Xenoverse series, “enter the Dragon Ball world yourself,” is an important pillar of the Dragon Ball game franchise, so we will continue to work hard on with proper plans for future development.

Xenoverse will continue to run and there’s more to come!

Take a step into the future of Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 with Chapter 1 of the Future Saga on May 24, 2024, on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S! Stay tuned for more updates from the Xenoverse 2 team with a 2nd Festival of Universes coming soon and the three additional Chapters of Future Saga coming next.

We hope to see you in Conton City!

  • Innovative new tactile sensor helps assess fine motor skills

Innovative new tactile sensor helps assess fine motor skills

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

Fine motor skills correlate strongly with cognition and the accurate assessment of an individual’s motor skills can be critical in diagnosing and treating a variety of conditions. But objective evaluation has been a challenge, as suitable sensors weren’t available. To help medical professionals better test fine motor skills, a team of researchers from Japan’s Shibaura Institute of Technology developed a new EIT-based tactile sensor system.

EIT (electrical impedance tomography) is traditionally used for non-invasive medical imaging of human body parts, but here it is used to image the internal structure of the sensor body in order to classify fine finger movements. When a subject pinches the sensor, for example, they deform the structure and that alters the voltage between the sensor’s 16 electrodes. Each finger movement or grip creates an identifiable pattern of voltages, enabling classification and therefore assessment.

This only works if the system can collect precise voltage readings from the electrodes, so the researchers turned to an Arduino UNO R4 Minima board for the task. The electrodes connect to the Arduino’s 14-bit ADC (analog-to-digital converter) through multiplexer chips, so the system can quickly scan through all 16 electrodes. It would be easy to expand that number in the future to produce more detailed images. After collecting the data, the team was able to utilize conventional EIT image reconstruction techniques for classification and even classify the voltage readings directly.

With the latter technique, the researchers reported 94.1% classification accuracy in testing of 12 subjects performing six unique motions. More details on the work can be found in the team’s paper here.

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

  • A Note From Ninja Theory – Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II is Out Now

A Note From Ninja Theory – Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II is Out Now

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Today we are proud and excited to launch Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II on Xbox Series X|S, PC, Xbox Cloud Gaming and Game Pass.

In Hellblade II, the sequel to Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, we see the return of Senua in a brutal battle for survival through the myth and tyranny of Viking Iceland. It is a game from the heart, where our small team of around 80 developers have crafted an experience that aims to immerse you in Senua’s world and story. Our bold mission as a studio is to ‘Craft Life Changing Art with Game Changing Tech’, by which we mean we aim to push the boundaries of technology and techniques in order to create a game, and an experience, that leaves you thinking and feeling.

Immersion drives our work at Ninja Theory, with our belief being that if we can immerse you in Senua’s Saga, we can take you on an unforgettable journey. Our belief is also that believability is the route to this immersion, and so our team has painstakingly worked to bring our reality into Senua’s.

The game is set in real locations in Iceland, recreated through satellite data and photogrammetry. Our characters are digital doubles of real people and their costumes first made as real clothing through historically authentic techniques and materials. And all our character animations starts life as real movement from our incredible cast on our performance capture stage.

It is not only our presentation that is based in ground-truth reference, but so to are the narrative themes in Senua’s journey – in particular Senua’s experiences of psychosis. Senua is a person who lives in an unshared reality. She sees things that others don’t, hears things that others don’t and has unique beliefs about the world.

In order to realize Senua’s experiences of psychosis in a truthful way we have, as we did on Senua’s Sacrifice, worked closely with our friends and partners in the world of neuroscience and lived-experience. Their generosity, openness and support has given us the opportunity to understand what living with psychosis can be like, in the hope that Senua feels like a real person going through a very personal mental health journey.

I’d like to take this as an opportunity to thank our team and collaborators for devoting themselves to Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II as a true passion project. I’d also like to thank you, our fans, for your support throughout the development of Hellblade II. It has meant so much to us.

Now, it is time to turn down the lights, put your headphones on and join Senua for, what we hope is, an unforgettable journey into Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II.

  • The Wanderers – The Team Behind Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II’s Incredible Landscapes

The Wanderers – The Team Behind Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II’s Incredible Landscapes

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

2017’s Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice was an exceedingly special game. A bold, brash direction for Ninja Theory, the decision to craft a short, narrative experience revolving around mental health was a brave leap, but one that ultimately paid off. Now, seven years later, the studio is gearing up to reveal a sequel to Senua’s story, built with the same love and care, but expanding on the debut in every conceivable way.

In the run up to launch, we’ll be bringing you the story of Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II from inside the studio itself, as well as stories and lessons from Hellblade’s creative leads. This is Ninja Theory’s ultimate form, filled with industry-leading talent, groundbreaking technology, and one of the most unique approaches to game development you’ve ever seen to fulfil the ultimate goal – the pursuit of true immersion.

When it comes to the environments showcased in Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II, breathtaking doesn’t quite cover it. Despite its linear story, the game showcases a sense of scale that adventures like this don’t often offer, and everything you see is rooted in a familiar realism. Where most games of this kind would confine you to corridors, valleys, and other means of obscuring your view, Hellblade II’s vistas often stretch to the horizon, giving you a sense of the sheer size of Senua’s journey ahead. The idea is clear – this is literal worldbuilding, rooting your journey in a much, much, bigger story.

During our visit to Ninja Theory, we had the opportunity to speak to key creative leads about how the studio achieved this sense of place through location scouting and research, to bring an ethereal, yet believable recreation of medieval Iceland into Hellblade II

  • Raspberry Pi 5 Cases – Group Test

Raspberry Pi 5 Cases – Group Test

    Reading Time: 6 minutes

    Official Raspberry Pi 5 Case

    Raspberry Pi

    £10 / $10

Coming in red/white or black, the official case comprises three plastic sections that snap-fit together, so assembly is a cinch. The middle section includes a clear insert with a fan that connects to Raspberry Pi 5’s Fan port. A small SoC heatsink is also included.

Capacity: By removing the clear insert and fan from the middle section, you can mount a HAT. Or you could use a booster header to lift it above the fan.

Port access: All side ports are accessible via cutaways, along with the power button. The middle section features a wide slot to enable access to the GPIO pins when the lid is removed; it could also be used for routing cables for a camera or other accessories.

Cooling: The variable-speed fan’s cooling is aided by vents in the bottom of the case, plus the SoC heatsink. It works even with the lid on, due to a circular gap. In our tests, it prevented throttling even under a heavy workload, but some other cases performed better.

Wi-Fi signal: As you’d expect, the plastic case has very little effect on the signal, which remained strong.

    Verdict

A well-thought-out, versatile design that covers most uses.

    ICE Tower CPU Cooler

    The Pi Hut

    £16 / $17

Its cool-looking tower design is enhanced by RGB LEDs making it glow in various colours. Is it really a case? Well, it does have a plastic base, connected via screws and bolts to two metal mounting brackets and the main fan/heatsink section on top. Assembly is a little fiddly (especially the brackets), but not too tricky. The heatsink it connected to the SoC via a thermal pad.

Capacity: You won’t be mounting any HATs with that large fan and heatsink sitting atop Raspberry Pi!

Port access: The open design means access to all the ports and GPIO pins is unhindered.

Cooling: The vertically mounted fan blows air onto the aluminium fins of the large heatsink, whose base is connected to Raspberry Pi 5’s SoC via a thermal pad. This results in excellent cooling performance. By default, the fan doesn’t even kick in until the temperature reaches 60°C (which didn’t happen during our tests), but it could prove more useful if you’re overclocking Raspberry Pi 5.

Wi-Fi signal: The presence of that metal heatsink does have an effect on the signal, but not too much.

    Verdict

With its unusual design and lighting, it looks very cool… and delivers great cooling.

    Argon NEO 5

    Argon 40

    £18 / $19

A three-piece design – with two aluminium sections and a plastic base – the NEO 5 oozes style and quality with its red/black colour scheme and solid feel. The middle section is especially impressive, with a fan next to curved fins to aid cooling. Assembly is aided by a guide in a small booklet.

Capacity: With the top part removed, you could mount a HAT with a booster header to lift it over the fan. A special NVMe version of the case is also available.

Port access: The middle section has cutouts for the main ports, camera/display, PCIe, UART, RTC, and the GPIO pins (with a helpful labelled strip on the side).

Cooling: The fan’s effect is aided by vents in the middle section and base, plus a couple of thermal pads for the SoC and PMIC. This results in very good cooling performance.

Wi-Fi signal: The mainly metal case does result in a noticeable reduction in signal strength and quality.

    Verdict

A stylish, quality case with great cooling performance.

    KKSB HAT Case

    The Pi Hut

    £16 / $16

The tallest case in the group, it’s 56mm high, and is designed to accommodate a Raspberry Pi 5 with a HAT mounted on top. The anodised aluminium case has no built-in cooling, but you could add an Active Cooler or heatsink. There’s plenty of room, and a GPIO booster header is supplied if needed to lift a HAT up slightly. Assembly is tricky, as you need to remove both side panels and slide in Raspberry Pi, screw it in place with tiny screws, and then add a HAT afterwards.

Capacity: The high headroom means there’s plenty of room to mount HATs on top of Raspberry Pi. Getting things in and out of the case and securing them in place is fiddly, though. We’d have preferred a removable lid.

Port access: The main ports are accessible via cutouts. There are slots for camera connections and PCIe ribbon cables. You’ll need to remove one or both side panels to access the other ports.

Cooling: There’s no built-in cooling, but the KKSB can be used with an Active Cooler, or most other coolers and heatsinks. Lots of slots in the case aid ventilation.

Wi-Fi signal: Maybe it’s all those ventilation slots, but the signal is hardly affected.

    Verdict

Not the most user-friendly design and no built-in cooling, but good capacity.

    Passive Cooling Open CNC Case

    EDATEC

    £7 / $8

Raspberry Pi 5 is sandwiched between the two case sections, with no side pieces. Each grooved aluminium piece is fitted with several thermal pads to aid passive cooling, including for Raspberry Pi 5’s SoC, PMIC, and wireless module. The two case sections are secured with long bolts.

Capacity: With the open design and GPIO header access, you can mount a HAT just above the top section.

Port access: With no side pieces, access to ports is unfettered, with cutouts for the GPIO pins, PoE header, PCIe and camera/display ports, plus UART and RTC battery connectors.

Cooling: Highly effective passive cooling is provided by the numerous thermal pads and grooved aluminium case pieces. It keeps Raspberry Pi 5 cool (37.8°C) even under a heavy workload.

Wi-Fi signal: The metal case does result in a noticeable reduction in signal strength and quality.

    Verdict

Great port access and some impressive passive cooling performance.

    ABS Fan Case

    The Pi Hut

    £15 / $16

While it doesn’t feel the most solid or weighty case, its two main sections have plentiful vents and you get a choice of coloured stripes to stick on the lid! An Armour Lite V5 fan-equipped heatsink sits on top of Raspberry Pi 5 via five thermal pads.

Capacity: The heatsink takes up a fair amount of space in the case. You could still mount a HAT with a GPIO header booster and the lid off.

Port access: The main side ports are accessible via cutouts. With the lid removed, you can access all the others.

Cooling: Five thermal pads connect the SoC, PMIC, RP1, RAM, and wireless module to the heatsink with built-in fan. Considering this, cooling performance was not quite as good as we expected, but decent.

Wi-Fi signal: There’s some effect on the strength and quality, possibly due to the metal heatsink.

    Verdict

Middling cooling performance in a lightweight case.

  • A drone remote designed to enhance magic shows

A drone remote designed to enhance magic shows

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

Maker culture has always been a major part of magic performance. Some tricks are well-rehearsed slight of hand, but many of them rely on clever engineering to sell an illusion. And modern technology offers a great deal of interesting possibilities. That is the idea behind Peter Boie’s Engineering Wonder “STEM infused magic show.” That show includes a drone and Boie needed a way to reliably control it, so he created this purpose-built remote.

This remote works with the Tello drone, which is an interesting piece of hardware all on its own. It is an affordable quadcopter that we would normally categorize as a toy, except that it contains high-quality DJI components (and, presumably, flight control firmware) and versatile control schemes. Users can start flying right away by piloting the drone with a smartphone app, but the drone can also respond to simple commands sent over Wi-Fi by any device. For example, you can connect to the drone’s Wi-Fi network from your PC and run a custom Scratch program to send flight commands.

Boie needed a way to do that while performing during his magic show. He needed to send flight commands without drawing attention from the audience and that had to be very reliable. His solution was to build a custom remote based on the Arduino UNO R4 WiFi board.

Boie designed his own shield that contains several buttons to trigger specific flight commands, such as “go up 50” or “do a barrel roll.” That also has two big, bright LEDs. Those provide a very clear indication of the Wi-Fi connection status, so Boie doesn’t risk an onstage blunder if the connection fails for some reason.

When it detects a button press, the Arduino sends the corresponding Tello command over WiFi as a UDP (User Datagram Protocol) packet. Each button triggers a single function and Boie can find the buttons by touch on the custom 3D-printed enclosure, letting him focus on his magic performance.

What Lydia Knows, a Deep Visual Novel and RPG Double-Game Pack, Arrives on Xbox

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

One Fateful Night, Cypress Ridge Experiences a Nearly Endless Nightmare.

On the other side of the coin, Outbreak RPG represents yet another way we’ve challenged ourselves to do something different with the Outbreak series. This is a rogue-like, turn-based adventure where survival is far from guaranteed. While most of our games explore survival horror gameplay from an action-oriented perspective, Outbreak RPG instead approaches this from a slower-paced, cerebral point-of-view.

The premise is simple; embark on a quest to evacuate survivors out of Cypress Ridge as the city has fallen to a zombie apocalypse. In this game, though, you need to manage a four-character party, complete with character-specific strengths and weaknesses, to take out deadly foes strategically. Do you attack with Lydia’s handgun for a higher chance of critically injuring monsters, or do you use Hank’s shotgun to hurt multiple ghouls with a single blast? Do you spend a turn to search for supplies or heal, or do you attempt to run away from an encounter entirely? Is it best to use a precious grenade when you’re out of ammo, or should you try to whittle down your opponent with a melee attack? These are the types of questions you’ll constantly need to answer correctly if you’re going to emerge from the city victorious.

In between random battles, you will stumble into events that may aid you in your fight or even deal damage to your party.  The timing of your choices in and out of combat will also impact your initiative, which affects your luck. As you rescue each Survivor scattered throughout Cypress Ridge, you’ll receive perks ranging from increased health to powered-up weapons.  Once you find all ten civilians, endure a final boss encounter and victory is yours!  No play-through of Outbreak RPG is the same, however, and with four difficulty settings, you can re-enter the hellscape for a fresh challenge.

15 Jahre Minecraft: Die wichtigsten Meilensteine

    Reading Time: 10 minutes
