Portland, Oregon-based Mark has an urban garden that needs to be irrigated each summer. Judging from the description of his irrigation system, the garden is a little larger than the 30-foot back lawns often attached to suburban UK homes. Commercially available timers provide reliable irrigation, but Mark found they don’t last: “If you forget to bring them in during the winter, they freeze and break. After a few years, the plastic valves wear out and they jam closed (bad for plants) or jam open (bad for water bills). They don’t adjust to rain or hot weather.” Pricier, more robust timers plus web connectivity to check the weather forecast work better but still fail. Mark had several Raspberry Pi boards at home, and decided to put them to good use. Having written extensively about Raspberry Pi as well as coding using R (see his blog at niemannross.com), the combination seemed obvious, although R is a less common choice of programming language. “My preferred language is R, which I can run from a Linux operating system, but not from MicroPython or C. Irrigation only happens once a day, so I don’t need speed. What I need is the most convenient way to express my logic to Raspberry Pi.” Using Raspberry Pi Zero WH as the controller “makes it easy to connect to the internet and the headers provide a convenient way to connect relays and buttons,” he explains.
Bits and pieces
Creating his irrigation system involved assembling lots of fairly standard components and a certain amount of planning. Prior knowledge of plumbing and electronics is helpful, Mark observes. The planning aspect required Mark to work out how much rainfall was likely to offset the total number of gallons of water his garden would need and how long the valves would need to be open at a time. He calculated the rate at which his house pipes could pump water to the irrigation valves (and the putative number of gallons per hour) as well as the voltage required for the relays to deliver it.
To see whether his idea would work Mark began by screwing irrigation valves, two servos and Raspberry Pi needed to power the system, as well as a Raspberry Pi Zero, on to a piece of wood. “There isn’t any water connected to the system at this point – I’m only trying to test the electronics and develop and test the code.”
After writing and testing the code on Raspberry Pi he “ran it with the relays for days without any valves connected, then tested the plumbing in a sink before I attached it to the board”.
The US Environmental Protection Agency estimates 28 million US homes have an automated watering system, and that households can reduce their water usage by roughly 7,600 gallons a year using a weather-based system to gauge requirements. Mark wanted to see whether he got realistic readings, and how well the system performed, before deciding to risk linking it up with his water meter for billing. He continues to tweak and update it and is delighted with just how well his $75 irrigation system is performing.
When you hear about all of the amazing things being accomplished with artificial intelligence today, you probably assume that they require a massive amount of processing power. And while that is often true, there are machine learning models that can run on the edge — including on low-power hardware like microcontrollers. To prove that, Shovan Mondal built this AI-enhanced desk lamp.
Mondal’s goal with this project was to demonstrate that AI (specifically machine learning) can be easy to implement on affordable and efficient hardware, such as an Arduino UNO Rev3 board. Here, the ML model adjusts the brightness of the lamp’s LED proportionally to the ambient light in the area as detected by an LDR (light-dependent resistor). The lamp body is heavy cardstock paper.
It would be possible to program this behavior explicitly with set thresholds or a manually created formula. But a trained ML model can do the same job without explicit instructions. The training process is simply subjecting the lamp to different lighting conditions and manually adjusting the brightness to suit them. That produces a series of data pairs consisting of the LDR and LED brightness values.
In CSV format, that data can be used to train a linear regression model provided with scikit-learn. That then produces a formula and values that will reproduce the data seen in the training set. The output can then set the LED brightness.
In this case, that formula is very simple, because it only has to account for two variables with a direct relationship. But much more complex relationships are possible, as are ML models that perform tasks more challenging than linear regression.
Calling 911 in emergency situations isn’t always possible. In those moments, texting 911 may be the most helpful option. This is why, in partnership with emergency technology company RapidSOS, we’ll begin gradually rolling out the ability to text 911 with RCS (Rich Communication Services) to U.S. emergency call centers this winter, starting in areas where text-to-911 capabilities are currently not supported to close gaps in emergency communications coverage and provide new safety benefits. First available on Google Messages, emergency texting with RCS will bring critical safety communications capabilities to you when you need it most.
A new way to reach 911 with RCS
Today, you can already text 911 through SMS in some locations. However, texting 911 through SMS is only available for around 53% of U.S. emergency responder call centers and doesn’t always allow you to share pictures and videos. Using RCS to reach 911 brings new safety benefits and allows you to:
Confirm delivery of your emergency request and see if emergency responders are actively replying to your messages. This eliminates the uncertainty of waiting to see if your messages went through.
Send high-resolution images and videos to give first responders a clearer picture of your situation. This can be crucial to aid a faster and more effective response from emergency service providers.
Share your precise location and additional information automatically through Android Emergency Location Service, like your language settings and opt-in Medical Information, so emergency responders know exactly where to go and can get helpful details from you even if you’re unable to reply.
Hogwarts Legacy’s Summer update is available today.
The update includes the Haunted Hogsmeade Quest, Photo mode, Talent tree reset, and new cosmetics.
The update will be free to all Hogwarts Legacy owners on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One.
The free Hogwarts Legacy Summer 2024 Update will give you new ways to capture the magic and immersive yourself in life at the famed school of witchcraft and wizardry in the late 1800s wizarding world. Let’s dive into what’s coming today in a totally free update:
Is This Shop… Haunted?
Ever wanted to own your own shop in the wizarding world? In Hogwarts Legacy, Hogsmeade is home to a boarded-up storefront which has, until now, been inaccessible. After downloading the Summer Update, players will find Penny the house elf sweeping outside this building shortly after the start of the winter season in game. Speaking with her will begin a new quest full of mystery, intrigue, and spooky moments. It also comes with a nice suite of rewards—including the shop itself and a dapper shopkeeper’s outfit—for players who brave the depths of the curious storefront. We don’t want to ruin any of the surprises here but watch out for tricks and traps after going through the trapdoor. All is not as it seems with Madam Mason’s shop.
Picture This
Photo Mode has been one of the most highly requested features from Hogwarts Legacy fans, and we’re thrilled to finally bring it to the game! Students at Hogwarts can now unleash their creative spirit while roaming the school or out on adventures in the Scottish Highlands. The Hogwarts Legacy Photo Mode is easily accessible by pausing the game and tapping the X button, where you’ll gain control of a host of camera features, filters and effects, frames, and other options to help capture that perfect shot.
With the ability to hide NPCs and your own character, select a different pose for your avatar (including sitting!), adjust the time of day and season, and add a variety of visual filters, you’ll be able to instantly snap all of your memoires in the wizarding world, whether it’s a fraught duel with a dark wizard, a moment with Peeves caught in the hallways between class, or a peaceful landscape view as the sun sets over the Black Lake.
Reset Your Talent Points
Another highly requested feature was the ability to reset your talent points to try different builds and playstyles, or simply undo talents that aren’t useful to you. For 200 gold per talent point, you can now reset your talents either individually or altogether to try out different talent combinations and undertake your adventure in the wizarding world in a new way. To reset your talent points, pause the game and jump into the Talents section of the Field Guide, where you’ll find this new feature.
New Cosmetics
We couldn’t just give you a mission, Photo Mode, and new feature without also bringing a few new cosmetics into the update! The brand-new Azkaban Coat and Azkaban Prisoner’s Outfit will give you a decidedly dark look, mimicking the ragged style of a famed prisoner that will end up escaping Azkaban 100 years after your own adventures in Hogwarts Legacy.
Our Hogwarts Legacy Easter Egg video showed off The Glasses That Lived last year; however, they were not available in-game at the time. After numerous questions from fans about how they could obtain these circular, taped-up spectacles that resemble those of The Boy Who Lived, we’ve finally made them fully available to everyone. You’ll also get the Onyx Hippogriff mount, the Felix Felicis Potion Recipe, and the brand-new Lavender Borealis broom, with a new dark apparition trail effect. Of course, this update also comes with several bug fixes and optimizations to Hogwarts Legacy.
The free Hogwarts Legacy Summer 2024 Update is available to download now on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One. Share your favorite Photo Mode captures with us using the hashtag #CaptureTheUnwritten, and let us know if you were brave enough to take on the mysteries under Madam Mason’s shop.

Astor: Blade of the Monolith is an exhilarating indie action-adventure RPG that brings together immersion and exploration elements of classic adventure games with stylish, dynamic combat. The game is now available on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One!
We asked the developers at C2 Game Studio to share their experiences creating this standout indie game in Colombia, exploring the unique challenges and victories they faced along the way.
What were the biggest challenges you faced making this game in Colombia?
One of our biggest challenges of making a game in Colombia is hiring local talent, where the gaming industry is still developing. Unlike in the US, where you can specify years of experience and a list of released titles across various platforms and genres, such criteria are not feasible here, and few would meet them. Instead, we focused on identifying potential and passion, though it’s often a gamble without the assurance that comes from proven experience. Very few have had the opportunity to see a game through from start to finish, a luxury that’s rare in our region.
How did living and working in Colombia influence the game’s story and design?
We always approach our games with a global mindset. However, it’s natural that our environment subtly influences our creations. While not intentionally infused with our culture, elements of Colombian life might still appear unnoticed. For instance, Crystal Haven, the city of the Diokek, has the charm of a Latin American town, inspired partly by Guillermo del Toro’s “Troll Hunters.” Now that I think of it, there are some food stands in Crystal Haven, maybe we should have added some arepas, buñuelos and empanadas, that would have been a nice easter egg!
What was the most rewarding part of making Astor? What was the hardest part?
The most rewarding moment was when months of iterations paid off and the combat finally felt great. We knew then we had something special. It was also incredibly gratifying to see our game showcased at events and witness people’s reactions!
Did you change the game based on feedback from players? If so, how?
We actively listened to feedback from our partners, publishers, and players, carefully selecting suggestions that aligned with our vision for the game. Some changes were straightforward, like toning down the flashiness of non-interactive props that confused players. Based on input from the PC demo, we implemented several technical enhancements, including a depth of field effect slider, adjustments to camera distance, and an option to disable camera assist.
How do you hope Astor will affect the games industry in Colombia and Latin America
There are many talented studios creating incredible games in Colombia. We hope that Astor not only opens doors for our studio but also for others in Colombia and Latin America, attracting more investors and publishers who believe in our talent, passion, and work ethic. Additionally, we aim to inspire the next generation of game developers to believe in their ability to create great and beautiful things.
Take care of your mental health, this rollercoaster has a lot of ups and downs.
What can players expect next from C2 Game Studio? Are there more games or updates planned?
What’s next? At the moment, we’re focused on supporting Astor to the best of our abilities, but we’re already brainstorming new game ideas, and we’re excited to apply all that we’ve learned to our next project! It could be something related to Astor, or perhaps an entirely new adventure. Only time will tell.
What advice do you have for new game developers in Latin America?
The hardest part, however, is always finishing the game. As veterans say, the last 10% is the toughest, and they’re absolutely right! Fixing bugs, meeting platform requirements, and making necessary compromises are all part of the process and extremely challenging.
It’s important for first-time developers to dream big, but start small. Our journey to creating Astor involved significant growth and gaining experience. Focus on mastering the basics, build a strong team around you, and choose reliable partners. Remember to take care of your mental health as well; the path to success is full of ups and downs.

At 1:19 AM on June 6, 1944, the first of 52 C-47 Skytrains of the 434th Troop Carrier Group began roaring into the sky in southern England. Launching from RAF Aldermaston, each Skytrain pulled a Waco CG-4A cargo glider behind a 350-foot-long towline. The 52 gliders were packed full of light artillery systems, anti-tank guns, ammunition, other weapons, a surgical team, and troops. Codenamed “Mission Chicago,” the gliders were bound for “LZ E,” a landing zone just to the west of the French commune Hiesville. Ten minutes later, 52 Skytrains of “Mission Detroit,” each towing a CG-4A, also lifted into the early morning sky.
The two groups were part of Operation Neptune, the initial assault phase of Operation Overlord, the Allied Invasion of Normandy. The first American paratroopers, dropped from low-flying C-47s, had landed on French soil just over an hour earlier, beginning ground operations of D-Day. The contributions of the gliders, far lesser known than other components of the invasion, would prove critical to the allied efforts in the subsequent hours.
THE COMBAT GLIDER:
The use of gliders for combat purposes was a concept first introduced by the German military early in World War II. On May 10, 1940, eleven German assault gliders were towed to an altitude of 8,500 feet by transports for a type of raid never before conducted. They detached from their tethers and flew silently for twenty miles, landing at precise locations just outside a key Belgian fort held by the Allies. The heavily defended fort was considered impregnable. The 78 troops onboard the gliders took control of the compound within just twenty minutes. The success was due almost entirely to the swift, surprise, and precise tactical positioning of troops that was enabled using gliders.
The American military took notice of the novel concept and its stunning success it engendered. Advantages of gliders included the large payload they could carry (roughly 4,000 pounds in the case of the CG-4A), silent operation prior to landing, and ability to land precisely where needed. American planners realized that these operational attributes would complement other forms of military maneuver practices, notably paratroop insertions. General Hap Arnold, the commander of the United States Army Air Forces, established a fresh command dedicated to creating and operating combat gliders in February of 1941. Industry participants submitted several designs that the American military extensively tested. The CG-4A, developed by American aviation firm Waco Aircraft Company, stood above all others in capability.
THE WACO CG-4A:
The CG-4A took its maiden flight in May of 1942 and was introduced into combat service in July of 1943. The CG-4A (CG stands for “Cargo Glider,” although it was often referenced as a “Combat Glider”) played critical roles in several battles. Nearly 14,000 CG-4A gliders were manufactured by over a dozen companies during the Second World War, including by the Ford Motor Company, the Waco Aircraft Company, and the Cessna Aircraft Company.
The high-wing monoplane design comprised a welded steel fuselage frame covered in canvas. Its wings, tail, and control surfaces were built of wood frames covered in fabric, and the glider’s floor was built of honeycombed plywood that could withstand heavy loads and rough landings.
Its nose, which held the cockpit, could swing upward for quick loading and unloading of the main cargo area. Crewed by two, it could carry up to 15 passengers with combat loads, although it typically carried a maximum of 13. With a cargo capacity of just over 4,000 pounds, it could also carry: a 75mm howitzer, 25 rounds of ammunition, and two artillerymen; a Jeep with driver and an assortment of personnel and cargo; a small bulldozer with operator; and several specialty loads including a field kitchen, field hospital, and repair facilities.
The CG-4A measured 48 feet, 8 inches in length, stood 15 feet, 4 inches tall, and had a wingspan of 83 feet, 8 inches. Primary controls consisted of a wheel for pitch and roll inputs, and rudder pedals for yaw. Its instruments included an airspeed indicator, an altimeter, a variometer, a compass, and a turn-and-bank indicator.
The CG-4A had a maximum speed of 150 miles per hour, but it typically “cruised” (towed behind the tug craft) between 110 and 130 mph. During its operational tenure, the CG-4A was towed primarily by the Douglas C-47 Skytrain.
THE DOUGLAS C-47D SKYTRAIN:
The C-47D Skytrain is a low-wing, twin-engine, piston-powered military transport airplane built by the Douglas Aircraft Company of the United States. The Skytrain, which took its maiden flight on December 23, 1941, was based on the company’s successful DC-3 airliner, which was developed and entered service in the 1930s. The Skytrain proved to be one of the most important aircraft for the Allies during World War II. One of its most important roles was as a tug aircraft for Waco CG-4A cargo gliders. The Skytrain could tow the CG-4A either from a standstill on the ground or by performing a “glider snatch pick-up,” snaring the glider’s tow line while flying just above ground level.
In the late 1930s, the United States Army Air Forces sought a transport aircraft that was more capacious, faster, and had a longer range than the military variants of the Douglas DC-2, the C-32, the C-33, and the C-34. In 1941, the command chose the DC-3 (developed from the DC-2) as the basis for their new primary transport aircraft, designating it the C-47 Skytrain. The all-metal DC-3 (Douglas Commercial 3), introduced as an airliner in 1936, proved efficient, reliable, fast, and was renowned for having great range.
The DC-3 required only a few modifications for the Army’s needs. These changes included the addition of a large cargo door, a strengthened floor in the fuselage, and glider tow hooks on its tail section that would be used for towing the Waco CG-4A.
The C-47 was crewed by three or four, depending on mission requirements, and could carry up to 28 fully equipped troops, 6,000 pounds of cargo, or some combination. A total of 10,000 Skytrains were produced by the end of World War II. The airframe served several roles other than glider towing, including general transport, paratroop delivery, medical evacuation, gunship, and reconnaissance.
All branches of the U.S. military used the Skytrain during World War II, as did every major Allied power. The British and Australians called it the Dakota (Douglas Aircraft Company Transport Aircraft).
The C-47 proved vital for the Allied victory. It operated in every major battle of the war, ensuring personnel, weapons, food, fuel, and other materiel arrived at the right places at the right times. This included delivering thousands of paratroops during the Battle of Normandy and flying the infamous “hump” over the Himalaya mountains from India to China, one of the most demanding, and dangerous, airlift missions in history. Post-World War II, the Skytrain played critical roles in the Berlin Air Lift, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Many, converted for civil use, continue to operate today around the world. Over 100 countries have used the C-47.
The C-47 measures 63 feet, 9 inches in length, has a wingspan of 95 feet, 6 inches, and stands 17 feet tall. It features a swept main wing, a standard tail unit, and a retractable traditional undercarriage. It is powered by two wing-mounted 14-cylinder Pratt & Whitney R-1830-90C Twin Wasp radial engines that each produce up to 1,200 horsepower and turn 3-blade, constant-speed propellers. It has a maximum range of 3,800 miles, a normal range of 1,600 miles, climbs at 1,000 feet per minute, and has a service ceiling of 26,400 feet above sea level. The C-47 cruises at 160 miles per hour and has a maximum speed of 224 mph.
CG-4A AVIATORS AND THEIR MISSIONS:
“Every landing was a genuine do-or-die situation for the glider pilots. It was their awesome responsibility to repeatedly risk their lives by landing heavily laden aircraft containing combat soldiers and equipment in unfamiliar fields deep within enemy-held territory, often in total darkness. They were the only aviators during World War II who had no motors, no parachutes, and no second chances.” – United States Army General William Westmoreland, discussing the pilots of military cargo gliders.
After releasing the tow line from the C-47, the CG-4A pilot needed to navigate to a landing zone, keeping the aircraft above its stall speed of 49 miles per hour. The CG-4A could land in just 200 yards, granted it touched down at its ideal landing speed of 60 miles per hour. Once on the ground, the pilots helped unload the glider’s personnel and contents and then grabbed their weapons and joined the troops they carried into combat.
Landing the CG-4A was incredibly dangerous. Pilots had only one shot. Adding to the danger was a German innovation, “Rommelspargel,” the dreaded “Rommel’s Asparagus.” Devised by German Field Marshal Erwin Rommel, these were wooden poles, some as tall as 16 feet, placed throughout open fields in Normandy. Intended to interdict American gliders and paratroopers, many of them were topped with explosives.
D-DAY VICTORY:
As the aircraft of Mission Chicago approached LZ E just before 4:00 AM on D-Day, German anti-aircraft fire erupted. One of the C-47s was shot down. The lead C-47, guided by a radio beacon placed by a pathfinder prior to their arrival, released its glider. The other Skytrains of Mission Chicago followed, then the Skytrains and CG-4As of Mission Detroit arrived. The pre-dawn glider missions, as well as those undertaken later in D-Day, were a resounding success. The gliders delivered critical supplies to Allied troops, helping secure a D-Day Victory.

It might surprise our urban-dwelling readers, but wells are still very common in rural areas where it is difficult or prohibitively expensive to run utilities. The CDC reports that more than 15 million households rely on groundwater and wells — and that’s just in the United States. But few people haul up old wooden buckets of water, which is electric pumps come in. Vishal Roy developed a DIY controller perfect for submersible groundwater pumps.
Roy previously had a centrifugal pump to pull up groundwater and fill a holding tank, but that pump was failing. Because it needed replacement anyway, Roy decided to go ahead and switch to a submersible pump that would likely be more reliable. But the submersible pump he purchased came with a manual control panel, which would introduce a new chore. That motivated Roy to build this Arduino-based controller that automatically runs the submersible pump to fill the holding tank whenever the level drops below a set point.
The holding tank has a conventional water level sensor system consisting of three exposed wires acting as capacitive sensors at different heights. This sensor design isn’t precise, but it is inexpensive and reliable, and precision isn’t important for this task, anyway.
The pump itself has a large electric motor that requires a startup sequence that first charges up a starting capacitor. Roy was able to replicate that using the Arduino Nano, which connects the two starting circuits using a Seeed Studio relay module. When the Arduino detects the water below a threshold in the holding tank, it toggles the relays to start the pump motor. Once enough water fills the tank to reach the highest sensor, the Arduino turns the motor back off.
Now Roy has a reliable way to automatically keep the holding tank full of water.

All versions of the CrowVi (from £92/$115) are able to be used out of the box with no extra set up – touchscreen models require you to use the USB-C port (not the power one) so the connected Raspberry Pi (or PC) can detect the inputs – but all models just need power and a HDMI connection.
There’s no battery installed in the CrowVi so you’ll have to provide external power, portably with a mobile battery or powered by the device you’re connecting it to at home if you don’t have a spare plug. To cut down on cables and power sources, CrowVi suggests daisy chaining power by using the USB-C data port on the display to power a Raspberry Pi while out and about. You won’t be able to get Raspberry Pi 5 up to full power this way, however it will run well enough.
As an aside, we understand the touchscreen is much like a standard touch display and is not sensitive enough for drawing, but does have the functions you’d otherwise expect from a smartphone or tablet.
Out and about
With unseasonable warmth during the review period, we were able to take the screen out and test it in the most extreme of conditions: direct sunlight. IPS displays do tend to have better visibility out in the sun and this screen performed fine, just as you’d expect any display to work. Make sure to crank up the brightness but find shade if you can.
As for power draw, a beefy power bank was able to keep everything running fine for a couple hours. Brightness levels and speaker use will affect this, so using external speakers or headphones will also change power draw.
The colours and responsiveness of the screen are great too. The image is sharp, and it was as good as any monitor we use at home. The cover is very stiff, and the magnets attaching it very strong, to make sure the display is held in place when propped up – it may be a touch too stiff at the bend and we weren’t always sure it was in standing position. Over time, though, it has loosened up enough.
The sturdy construction feels and looks great too – and as we’re home bodies we’re currently looking into how we can integrate it as a third screen in our set up, which is pretty high praise we think.
Verdict
8/10
A great monitor in its own right that performs well out of the house and well enough in direct sunlight

Nixie tubes have been the go-to option for makers looking for retro display aesthetics for many years, because their distinct orange glow carries a lot of vintage appeal. But VFD (vacuum fluorescent display) tubes have been gaining in popularity recently and have different — though similar — appeal. Oskar took advantage of IV-12 VFD tubes to build this beautiful custom calculator.
VFDs work like a cross between Nixie tubes and CRTs (cathode-ray tube). These IV-12 VFD tubes have seven segments that glow in a teal/cyan blue color (thanks to phosphor) and work at lower (and safer) voltages than Nixie tubes. They are bright and readable, which is why VFD technology was popular for automotive dashboards for decades. In this case, Oskar used five of these IV-12 VFD tubes for a custom calculator.
Aside from those very distinct VFD tubes, this calculator also has a lovely wood enclosure and a nice-looking set of key caps for the mechanical Cherry MX Brown key switches. The enclosure is laser-cut plywood with a walnut veneer. Oskar mounted the switches on a 3D-printed base plate.
An Arduino Nano board reads the keypad input, performs the calculations, and displays the results on the VFD tubes. A custom PCB simplifies the wiring, including for multiplexing to the VFD tubes, power connections from a lithium battery charger module, and altering voltage through boost and buck converters.
This looks fantastic, but there is a caveat: it can’t display a decimal point. Some VFD tubes include a segment for that purpose, but the IV-12 model does not. Even so, the calculator is usable for people who can deduce where the decimal point should go.

Universal Pictures’ “The Thing” transforms into Funko Pops! in an exciting (and disturbing) mash-up for Funko Fusion on Xbox Series X|S.
Through a collaboration with Universal Products & Experiences and others, Funko Fusion includes 20+ popular film, television, and comic crossovers.
Funko Fusionis launching September 13, 2024, for Xbox Series X|S.
A shape-shifting alien that synthesizes disparate life forms into nightmarish versions of themselves is rearing its head at a new target. In our upcoming game, Funko Fusion, Funko Pop! collectibles will transform Universal Pictures’ “The Thing” into something otherworldly.
Funko Fusion features over 20 pop-culture crossovers such as “Jurassic World,” “Back to the Future,” “Jaws,” “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World,” “Battlestar Galactica,” and more from Universal Pictures’ extensive vault (and other surprises too!), and is set for release on September 13, 2024, for Xbox Series X|S.
Combining Funko Pop! collectibles and a horror movie classic into a video game may sound unusual, but here at 10:10 Games we revel in that surprise and novelty. Our talented team, formed around a core of experienced TT Games veterans who worked on the successful LEGO games, set out to bring to life the 1982 film, “The Thing,” in our upcoming action-adventure game Funko Fusion. With an eye for authenticity and a touch of irreverent humor, we seek to embody the original film’s thrills and chills while offering our own unique spin. Here’s how we made that happen in collaboration with Universal Products & Experiences.
First, we made a hand-crafted level inspired by “The Thing” — NBCUniversal supplied original set photography and layouts to us, informing our development to be as authentic as possible. This challenging process took six months, in which we faithfully designed the Antarctic research U.S. Outpost #31 and its surrounding areas, iconic characters like R.J. MacReady, Childs, and more, and the shape-shifting terror (in its many forms) so iconic to the film. Puzzles, mechanics, and weapons were all carefully built to represent what made “The Thing” so formidable over 40 years ago.
Speaking of characters, players can unlock the gruesome, infected Norwegian and battle other variants of the alien threat across its various grim stages. The Funko versions of these characters come with fun nods to the movie. As expected, R.J. MacReady wields a shotgun and a trusty fire ax; cook Nauls wields a frying pan and roller skates around the base; and M.T. Garry holds a six-round revolver and a dog sled as a shield.
Enemy design was particularly challenging to perfect. “The Thing” has withstood the test of time due to its impressive horror and special effects, despite the limited tech of the ‘80s. Our art team took extra care to closely re-imagine that horror through the Funko Pop! style. In boss fights with major enemies, foes turn into alien-like versions of themselves, with tendrils trailing from their mouths and bulging eyeballs popping out. One of the first enemies you encounter is The Kennel Thing: This whimpering dog turns into an otherworldly evil with hairy spider legs, spitting deadly acid at you.
Playable characters can be infected at any time, transforming their appearance into something outright terrifying, bringing a sense of unpredictability to the experience. In Funko Fusion, you can play as a range of characters from a variety of well-known franchises, and each can be transformed into The Thing — so watch out!
We crafted iconic scenes inspired by the movie that fans will recognize, and newcomers can witness with dread. Norris’ chest becomes a toothy trap for Copper’s arms; Childs uses a flamethrower to survive the deadly dogs; and, of course, Blair uses his computer to simulate the rate of human assimilation. Many of these scenes are as thematically gruesome as the original film, but in 10:10 Games fashion, we’ve sprinkled humor throughout to make for a tongue-in-cheek tone that brings a new sense of playfulness.
For gameplay, we carefully considered what would work best. Everything needed to thematically relate back to the movie, whether it was puzzles or combat. The film uses ice/fire and dark/light stylistically, and we aimed to accomplish the same in Funko Fusion. Everything within U.S. Outpost #31 is powered by gas generators, and players use gas canisters in clever ways to solve puzzles by powering lights or operating pipes – or even destroying enemies.
Many moments are built to create a sense of paranoia and fear, especially through atmosphere and music. We licensed the rights to the official score, and our sound designer Mario Goetzenberger used 40-year-old synthesizers like those from the original score, to re-record haunting tracks for memorable scenes in the game.
We’re lucky that Universal Products & Experiences collaborated with us to make a compelling recreation of a fan favorite as we always hoped, and every section is built with care.
We’re thrilled to invite the world to play our inventive take on not just “The Thing,” but the many other pop-culture universes we portray in Funko Fusion. Through our creative adaptations, we hope to unite new and established fans to celebrate what made these franchises so special in the first place.
Funko Fusion is available September 13, 2024, for Xbox Series X|S. Funko Pop! collectibles based on select in-game characters will be available for fans later this summer at Funko.com and select global retailers.
AwesomeElina: „Einmal Minecraft, immer Minecraft!“
Minecraft begleitet Elina seit ihrer Kindheit.

Even before getting to play the game a couple of weeks ago, I honestly don’t know if I’ve ever been as excited for a piece of DLC as I am for Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree. With nearly 500 hours in Elden Ring across six full playthroughs, the game may not be my most-played game ever (tips cap toward Destiny 2), but it’s definitely one of my all-time favorites. Now, after playing Shadow of the Erdtree for several hours, I can already tell that it’ll continue to have its Godskin Peelers in me for the foreseeable future.
With that in mind, there are a number of elements of Shadow of the Erdtree that really stood out to me during my all-too-brief time with the game. Let’s take a closer look so my fellow Elden Ring sickos know what to expect when they dive into the DLC on June 21.
Touch the Withered Arm
If you played Elden Ring, there’s a good chance that you saw the withered arm hanging limply out of what appeared to be an egg in Mohgwyn Palace. That’s precisely where the DLC kicks off and it means that players will need to defeat Mohg (Lord of Blood if you’re nasty) before they can dive in. Once the area is clear, you’ll meet a new character named Leda. After briefly introducing yourself, she urges you to “touch the withered arm,” which teleports you to a brand-new area called the Realm of Shadow.
This is One Expansive Expansion
As anyone who played the excellent Ashes of Ariandel and The Ringed City expansions for Dark Souls III can attest, developer FromSoftware excels at creating fresh and memorable environments outside of the core game area. Shadow of the Erdtree looks to carry on (and even improve upon) that tradition by offering a massive new area for Elden Ring fans to explore. Although I spent several hours exploring the wide-open plains and labyrinthine corridors of the Realm of Shadow, much of the map was still shrouded in fog, indicating that I was only scratching the surface of what it has to offer.
It’s Certainly a Vibe
My entry to the Realm of Shadow was through the Gravesite Plain, which stretched out before me and was chockful of spectral gravestones and shambling, easily-dispatched low-level enemies. After riding my steed around the area and hitting the nearest map stele to unlock a better view on my map, I decided to do some exploration before forging ahead on the suggested path. Sure enough, I found spooky mausoleum to explore, as well as a dragon peacefully napping in the middle of a small lake. I decided to take a close look at both. After all, what’s the worst that could happen?
I’ve Made a Huge Mistake
As I noted above, I’ve played a lot of Elden Ring. So much so that I apparently forgot how unmercifully (and wonderfully!) challenging the game can be. Strolling up to the dragon awakened him and he looked at me for a moment… before launching himself into the air and scorching everything around me with black flame. Yes, Black Flame Dragons are now a thing, and I learned quickly that they are not to be trifled with. After several failed attempts to take the winged beast down, I decided to make my way back to the mausoleum, only to be met by Blackgaol Knight (reminiscent of the Crucible Knights) that summarily beat me down a half dozen times. Ahhhhh, yes, now that’s the Elden Ring I know and love!
You’re Only as Good as Your Gear
There are a number of new elements in Shadow of the Erdtree that will help you along your journey. I got a chance to try out the Milady, a light greatsword with several balanced attacks that I am already looking forward to using more. I also utilized some new armor from the Oathseeker Knight armor set that looks pretty slick (and offers a good deal of protection for its weight). The most important items I found, however, were the new Scadutree Fragments, which bolster the players Scadutree Blessing. This Blessing, effective only in the Realm of Shadow, allows the player to deal more damage and negate more damage from enemies. Finding as many of these as you can will likely go a long way in determining your long-term success.
Remember Fingercreepers? They’re Back… in Spirit Ash Form!
Fingercreepers (also known as Hand Spiders or Spider Hands or The Worst Enemy Ever) made an immediate impact on even the most diehard Souls-like fans, popping out of the ground to swarm and grab players. Well, they’re back in Shadow of the Erdtree, this time as a Spirit Ash that can be summoned to help the player in battle. I also had the chance to play around with two more additions to the Spirit Ash menagerie: the airborne Gravebird and the powerful Black Knight Commander Andreas. I’m not sure if any of them will ever take the place of my precious Mimic Tear, but it’s nice to have some flexibility.
Double (and Triple and Quadruple and…) Cross
After getting back on track, I came to a crossroads (quite literally). At the end of the main road through the Gravesite Plain, I reached a tree where the road split. Nearby was a glowing yellow cross and some NPCs named Freya (a former ally of our old friend Radahn) who explained that the crosses dot the land and are Miquella the Kind’s (???) footprints. Another character, Hornsent, gave me a map and explained that I could find more of the crosses if I explored. Further up the road, on the way to a large fortress, was another cross and another one of Miquella’s NPC followers. Ansbach, as he was called, asked me to figure out what Kind Miquella (again, ???) was doing in the Realm of Shadow.
What’s the Story, Mourning Glory?
As you might have ascertained from my liberal use of question marks above and as you probably might guess if you’ve played any of From’s other games, Shadow of the Erdtree’s plot is intentionally and deliciously murky. It’s up to the player to put the story’s puzzle together and you can be sure that there will still be a few pieces missing once you finish. The beauty of these games is letting your imagination (or, in many cases, the rabid and lore-obsessed community) fill in the blanks. Personally, I can’t wait to learn more about why Miquella was there in the first place, what the crosses represent, and what he wants with the titular Erdtree.
Burn it with Fire!
At last, I made it to the first of the two fortresses in the section of the game I got to play. Upon opening the large doors, I was immediately greeted by a large, hairy scorpion/spider hybrid and nearly a dozen smaller ones that slowly dropped down from the ceiling to swarm me. That garnered a big old nope from me and I quickly moved to dispatch them with extreme prejudice before moving further into the sprawling castle and facing tougher and tougher enemies (though none were as icky as those arachnids).
Choose Your Own Adventure
Like every great FromSoftware game, Shadow of the Erdtree offers players a plethora of choices when it comes to exploration. Do you jump off the path to make your way across the rooftops? Could that dark and spooky hallway actually lead to a shortcut back to the nearest site of grace? Is there an enemy lurking right around the corner next to that shiny item? Playing Shadow of the Erdtree reminded me just how great FromSoftware is at creating environments that provoke emotional responses from players. Whether it’s triumph, revulsion, or relief, you’re guaranteed to feel something as you explore the detailed environs.
Who’s the Boss?
During my time with Shadow of the Erdtree, I managed to make it through both of the castles (full disclosure: I basically sprinted through one of them in an effort to see the second boss) and battle the punishing bosses within. Bosses are always my favorite part of From’s games and these two did not disappoint. The first was named “Rellana, Twin Moon Knight” and was a massive knight that wielded two swords and dealt fast, whirling attacks. Upon getting Rellana to half health, he let out a roar and imbued one of his swords with red fire and the other with blue magic. That fundamentally changes his attacks to deal those types of damage, and he made quick work of me over a dozen times before I finally put him down.
Dance, Lion, Dance!
The second boss I faced, on the other hand, put me down over and over and over. The Divine Beast Dancing Lion moves a lot like the dancing Chinese dragons that you’ll see in parades, but facing off against this monstrosity was no celebration. In addition to its herky-jerky and unpredictable movements, the Dancing Lion occasionally spewed out fog that made it difficult to see more than a few feet. Once it was taken down to half health, it began summoning lightning strike attacks that required precise timing to dodge. I gleefully banged my head against that particular wall over a dozen times before my time with Shadow of the Erdtree was, sadly, at an end.
Yes, this IS Dog
Yeah, that’s right, everyone’s favorite beshelled reptiles have returned! No word yet if any of them are of the papal variety, but now you’ve got an even better reason to explore the Realm of Shadow when Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree launches on June 21.

You don’t go to watch a band play live for the audio quality — most venues are atrocious in that regard. No, you go to enjoy the show as a whole and that includes the visuals. The more a band can do to make the performance look exciting, the more you’re going to enjoy it. To that end, Luigi Morelli helped luthier (and fellow Italian) Gianluca of Nadar Guitars build this one-of-kind LED-lit electric guitar.
This guitar’s body looks like a left-handed B.C. Rich Warlock merged into a teardrop. It is a very unique design made all the more special by the LED lighting. Several strips of LEDs on the body resemble the traces of a circuit board, while additional LEDs run the length of the fretboard. There are eight different effects/animation programs and it is possible to switch between them using an infrared remote — a well thought-out feature, because a tech can control that along with the stage lights.
These are WS2812B individually addressable RGB LEDs that operate under the control of two Arduino Nano boards. One controls the lights on the neck (which only follow a single program) and the other controls the lights on the body. Power comes from a 5000mAh lithium battery.
In his writeup, Morelli mentions that the LED circuit produced a hum around 1kHz. We assume that the guitar’s pickups would amplify that, but Morelli says that they were able to solve the problem — they’re just keeping the solution “a little industrial secret.” Hum or not, the guitar looks fantastic.
It’s a few days before we submit our game to certification. Our release date announcement trailer is behind us and we’re adding in the last few updates to Read Only Memories: Neurodiver. For the eyecatch sequences, I give the Neurodiver itself a birthday: May 16, 2024, and we proceed to let it go out into the world.
The Day After
May 16 has come and gone and the game is out now. I’ve been working on this with several others who have come and gone for the past six years. A lot has happened with MidBoss, our team, and the world during this time, but the game is finally out and a wave of relief washed over us, followed quickly by a lot of anxiety. The game, after all, is shorter than our previous one, and its story is brisk. I still find myself playing and enjoying it in my off time, though, and I’m proud of what our team accomplished. I got to work and collaborate with a lot of wonderful people.
Past and Present: Planning the Game
Read Only Memories: Neurodiver is a very personal project, both in its story– however brief it may be–and in its development. I was the original director and lead artist/animator for 2064: Read Only Memories. It’s a game I have a complicated relationship with. A lot happened with it, the original team, and myself. I’m finally comfortable sitting with my housemates and watching them play it as we celebrate the release of our current game. My head is spinning at all of the interactions it has and the logistics involved now. It’s very impressive that we pulled it off. I’m proud of that game just as well, but its development was at a great cost.
We couldn’t aim for the same scope as the previous game. It was simply out of the question. But after working out the initial story planning, , we were delighted with the result: an engaging] light and brisk adventure. A pseudo-sequel with an established protagonist that can dive into memories, chasing a rogue psychic that hides within them. Whose memories would we be exploring? I wanted to revisit some old friends from the original game, a chance to see how they’re doing five or six years later.
Dive into the Details
Luna Cruz de la Vega, or ES88, is a young and ambitious psychic agent working at Minerva. The only one bonded to a special genetically engineered esper called the Neurodiver. This Neurodiver allows her to not only view and interact with memories, but also repair them. Each day she wakes up diving directly into work. ES88 wants to prove something to herself and her peers, and though she has confidence in her abilities, she still questions herself.
A psychic entity called Golden Butterfly is haunting people’s memories, fragmenting them, causing lingering anxieties to bubble up. These fragments range from something as simple as a lost password, all the way up to forgetting where you left off with someone important to you. It’s ES88’s job to repair these fragments and drive out Golden Butterfly. It’s a big task. Could it be too much? How much is she willing to push herself?
Read Only Memories: Neurodiver is a capsule filled with a lot of the things we love. ES88’s days play out like an episode in an anime, commercial bumpers and all. She dreams of herself as a magical girl. The soundscape is filled with glossy, vibrant FM tones reminiscent of old Yamaha powered sound cards. It was a joy animating every expression. Every character is voiced exactly how we imagined them to be in our heads. And it’s all framed within an homage to Japanese adventure games of the past.
Read Only Memories: Neurodiver is a game that’s filled with our enthusiasm for the things we love. It was a chance to spend time with some old friends again while meeting some new ones, and while it’s a brief journey, I hope it’ll continue to stay in your memories.

She has been tasked with tracking down Golden Butterfly, a mysterious psychic entity hiding in and fragmenting the memories of Neo-San Francisco’s citizens. Who are they? Why are they doing this? And how will you stop them? The NEURODIVER
The Neurodiver is a bioengineered psychic creature made to assist in boosting an esper’s natural abilities. With its help, you’ll be able to collect clues and thoughts in your subject’s memories in an effort to piece together distorted fragments inside them, pushing Golden Butterfly out! New And Old
Read Only Memories: NEURODIVER is a return to the vibrant sci-fi world of Neo-San Francisco from 2064: Read Only Memories with a whole new story, and a whole new cast of characters. It’s an adventure that newcomers can easily dive into, but those familiar with the original game might notice a lot of familiar faces making a comeback! An FM Sound Sensation!
NEURODIVER’s soundtrack is inspired by the OPNA/YM2608 sounds of the PC-8801 and PC-9801 series of computers, brought to you by Scarlet Moon composer and sound designer, Ken „coda“ Snyder (Tree of Knowledge)! If you love the sharp and glossy tones generated by late 80s and early 90s FM chips found in a variety of old computers, sound cards, arcades and consoles, then you’ll be right at home here. Long live the power of FM sound! 🎹
“The Prismatic subclass connects abilities and powers that were previously insulated from each other, so the player can generate very novel builds from that interplay,” Tsai explains. “Being able to combine the crowd-control properties of Stasis with a destructive Solar force, for instance, can lead to entirely new approaches in combat.”
The team began with fantasy statements for the first Prismatic builds: “We talked about the different ways the player would engage: ‘slow ‘em down, then blow ‘em up,’ or ‘get amped and go berserk.’ Even though the individual abilities were familiar, they pushed towards distinct styles in those initial combinations to elevate new strategies. But we know the community is going to find even more amazing combinations and tactics, especially once they start using the new Aspects and Fragments.”
Feeling Super
Destiny 2’s existing subclasses are also getting an exciting revamp in the form of several new Super abilities. Titans come armed with Twilight Arsenal, a potent new void Super, Hunters are freshly equipped with Storm’s Edge, a deadly new Arc ability, and Warlocks are bringing the heat with Song of Flame.
Much like the surroundings of The Pale Heart, these Supers also incorporate elements of classic Destiny abilities. For example, Storm’s Edge is described as similar to the Bladedancer ability for Hunters in the original Destiny.
“We wanted to deliver an experience that felt like it connected back to that classic Arc Hunter fantasy while also providing an aggressive, high-mobility playstyle,” says Samuel Dunn, Gameplay Feature Lead. “We knew we wanted to incorporate elements like the Arc Blade weapon itself as well as the powerful spin attack, but with the ability to rapidly zip in and out of trouble in the blink of an eye. Together, with the new air move from Ascension, you can chain together powerful aerial movement combos to keep your enemies on their toes.”
Run a sushi shop as a robot chef in the cozy life sim Rolling Hills.
Make sushi, make friends, and make sushi bot’s restaurant-running dreams come true.
Rolling Hills will be available June 4, 2024, for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, and with Game Pass.
If you ever found yourself lying in bed at night pondering what life would be like as a sushi-making robot, the upcoming Rolling Hills is designed to answer that very question.
Developer Catch & Release, LLC’s wholesome blend of life sim and restaurant management game casts you in the “roll” of Sushi Bot, a cute aspiring chef who is granted the one-in-a-lifetime opportunity to open up a shop in a friendly little town.
Making sushi, making friends, and even solving a mystery or two for the townsfolk are some examples of how you might choose to spend your time in Rolling Hills — here’s what an average day might look like for a not-so-average robot.
To the market!
Every morning, your friendly neighborhood grocer Arman stocks his store with fresh ingredients to buy. Picking the right ingredients can make a world of difference for your sushi recipes, granting permanent upgrades that please more palettes and bolstering the special bonuses certain recipes provide when served — like making customers a bit more patient or auto-magically cleaning up dirty tables.
Tasks around town
You might not think so from Rolling Hills’ unassuming nature, but there are tons of unusual tasks to be taken care of around town. You never know when neighbors might ask you to grow a giant cucumber or find the perfect spot to plant a wi-fi antenna for the town. And the townsfolk just know there’s got to be something up with that mysterious shrine…
Go thrifting
If you need a new table to seat more patrons, fresh wallpaper to liven up the place, flooring to suit your culinary vision, or perhaps some bright new signage to signal you’re serious about your sushi, hop over the town’s river to Wren’s thrift shop which features a regularly rotating catalog of decor and furniture to deck out your restaurant. The right vibe can even increase profitability, make customers more relaxed, or give you a boost to your restaurant’s XP!
Coffee with a friend
Sushi Bot’s friend Maia runs the local coffee shop, which is the perfect place to make friends while hanging out over a cup of joe or a sweet treat. And when you treat your pals right, they’ll help you in return — offering new items in their stores, or maybe even using their fishing skills to snag strange items out of the local streams.
Let’s roll!
When dinnertime rolls around, it’s Sushi Bot’s time to shine! Here’s when all the day’s hard work pays off, as you serve up sushi from your growing recipe repertoire with the help of your automated culinary conveyor. Every patron has different tastes when it comes to the quality and flavor they look for – and some folks can be a bit messy or rude. But when the money and five-star reviews roll in, and word starts to spread about Rolling Hills, it’ll all be worthwhile!
Ready to live out the robot sushi chef life? Rolling Hills arrives on Xbox One, Series X|S, Windows PC, and with Game Pass on June 4, 2024!
