6 cybersecurity mistakes people make — and what to do instead6 cybersecurity mistakes people make — and what to do instead

    Reading Time: 5 minutes

From sending emails to scrolling through social media, our lives are very much online. Every click, login, and piece of information we share builds our digital footprint, one that requires constant protection from online threats like scams and malware. Implementing best practices to stay safe online can feel overwhelming, but don’t worry — we’re here to help!

We asked two of our experts to walk us through the all-too-common cybersecurity mistakes people make online, and what to do instead. Read on to learn more about which habits you should drop for good, and how to start this year with a safer, more secure online life.

Mistake #1: Using the same password everywhere

Reusing passwords is one of the most common cybersecurity habits we all should drop, says Sriram Karra, senior product manager of sign-in security. This seemingly innocuous habit can create a dangerous domino effect. For example, say you use your Gmail password on another platform and that platform suffers a breach — then, your Google Account also becomes vulnerable. „No matter how strong our online security is, a breach of a third-party website can compromise your Google Account if you’re reusing passwords,“ Sriram says.

What to do instead: Never reuse passwords; instead, use Google Password Manager to make it easier to generate and keep track of unique sign-in credentials. In addition, „pay special attention to picking a strong and unique password for your Google account, because if that Google account gets compromised you can also lose access to other accounts,“ Sriram says. “Many websites send password reset links to your registered email. This means if someone gains access to your Gmail, they could easily take over your other accounts by resetting their passwords.”

You can also add passkeys to your Google account, which will allow you a safe and simple way to sign into your account using your device’s biometrics or PIN. And as other services add passkey support, start using them for a convenient and password-free sign-in experience.

    Mistake #2: Neglecting software updates

It might be tempting to ignore those annoying software update reminders, but our experts caution against it. “Allowing regular software updates is actually the second-most crucial security practice after using a password manager,” says Christiaan Brand, group product manager of identity. These updates often contain vital security patches that fix vulnerabilities attackers exploit. Delaying them leaves your devices, data, and privacy at risk.

Plus, if you procrastinate on updating, many software updates have a way of forcing themselves eventually, often at inconvenient times. This can disrupt your workflow or downtime, and sometimes even lead to application crashes or temporary loss of functionality.

What to do instead: Prioritizing timely software updates is essential for maintaining a healthy and secure digital life. Regularly update your devices‘ software, ensuring you benefit from the latest security patches and protections. Platforms like Android and ChromeOS provide most system and security updates automatically to ensure your devices stay up-to-date against emerging threats, providing a proactive defense mechanism without you having to do anything.

    Mistake #3: Overlooking 2-Step Verification

Another crucial online security mistake is neglecting to turn on 2-Step Verification, a security feature that adds a step during sign-in to help prevent someone from accessing your account unless you allow it. „Adding a second step of verification can cut down many kinds of attacks, including 100% of automated bot attacks,“ Sriram says. Yet, users often ignore setting up this simple and effective feature.

What to do instead: Turn on 2-Step Verification by following these instructions for your Google Account. Once it is on, 2-Step Verification sends prompts to your phone to allow log-in attempts. It adds an extra layer of protection, making unauthorized access to your account a significantly more challenging feat. It’s like having a second lock on your digital door — a small inconvenience for a significant boost in security.

If you are at a higher risk due to your profession, online presence, or personal circumstances, you can opt into our Advanced Protection Program.

Mistake #4: Not setting a screen lock PIN on your mobile device

„It might seem like a hassle, but configuring a screen lock on your device, even if it seems unnecessary, is crucial for protecting your data,“ Christiaan says. This simple step safeguards your information from unauthorized access and accidental triggers, bringing peace of mind and reinforcing good security habits.

Not all screen lock PINs are created equal, however; Sriram says to avoid using weak PINs with easily identifiable patterns like 1234. „These methods may seem convenient, but they pose a significant security risk if your phone falls into the wrong hands,“ he says.

What to do instead: Choose a strong screen lock option, like a complex password or biometric authentication, which uses fingerprint or facial recognition — Google Pixel phones, for example, offer convenient and secure biometric options. If you lose or misplace your phone, Google’s Find My Device tool helps you locate and secure it. And even in trusted locations like your home or office, you can choose when and how long your phone stays unlocked.

Mistake #5: Clicking on suspicious links

Cybercriminals often disguise malicious links as legitimate ones, making it difficult to discern truth from deception. „It’s hard to advise never clicking on things or only clicking on links from trusted senders,“ Christiaan acknowledges, because in today’s digital landscape, malicious links can come in the form of legitimate-looking emails and seemingly harmless posts on social media. But if you’re not careful, all of these can be a gateway to malware and data theft.

What to do instead: Stay vigilant; be wary of any links you click on, even ones that look legitimate. For an extra layer of protection, make sure to enable Google Enhanced Safe Browsing, which identifies and warns against a list of known phishing and malware sites that is updated in real-time. By leveraging this tool, you actively shield yourself from threats that could compromise your security. It’s like having a personal online security guard keeping an eye out for you while you browse.

Mistake #6 Not having a password recovery plan

Forgetting your password or misplacing your phone — a crucial part of a two-factor authentication system — can happen to anyone. „These are normal occurrences, and we have robust automated Account Recovery to deal with them,“ Sriram assures us. But if you haven’t set up a recovery plan before they happen, you can be caught stranded without access to your account for a long time.

What to do instead: Create a recovery plan before you need it, so when the time comes you won’t be locked out of your account. You can add a recovery email address or phone number so Google can contact you if you get locked out of an account. Be sure to set up your account with sufficient verification information to make sure it is up to date for a smoother recovery process. Like a spare key, Google’s account recovery options give you the tools to regain access, even if you lose your password or device.

By following our experts’ advice and using Google’s powerful tools, you can build a strong digital defense and navigate the ever-changing digital landscape with confidence.

Android is all about giving you the ability to choose the devices that work best for you and making sure they connect seamlessly together, regardless of what brand they are.

Today at CES, we’re announcing updates to help you get more done across your phone, laptop, Bluetooth accessories, TV, smart home and car. Take a look at these updates and how they build on improvements we made to our ecosystem at last year’s CES.

A new way to share files

Sharing pictures, files and text between devices should be simple, fast and convenient. In 2020, we introduced Nearby Share to make it easy to share files across devices. Samsung also has its own capability called Quick Share, which is loved by their users.

Collaborating with Samsung, we’re bringing the best of our sharing solutions together into a singular cross-Android solution under the Quick Share name. We’ve integrated the experiences and created the best default, built-in option for peer-to-peer content sharing across all types of devices in the Android and Chromebook ecosystems. And to make sharing even more seamless between devices, we’re working with leading PC manufacturers like LG to expand Quick Share to Windows PCs as a pre-installed app.

This means with a simple tap of the new Quick Share icon, you can see a list of available devices close by. You remain in control of your privacy, and can choose in your phone’s settings who can discover your device and send files, whether it’s everyone, only your contacts or just your own devices. Quick Share will start rolling out to current Nearby Share enabled devices next month.

Android and Google Play have continuously evolved to provide more flexibility and choice in response to feedback from developers and regulators, as well as intense competition from Apple and app stores across the open Android ecosystem. We demonstrated this in the recent trial and were disappointed that the verdict did not recognize the choice and competition that our platforms enable. While we are challenging that verdict and our case with Epic is far from over, we remain committed to continually improving Android and Google Play.

Today, the details of a settlement reached in September with state attorneys general were filed publicly. This settlement builds on Android’s choice and flexibility, maintains strong security protections, and retains Google’s ability to compete with other OS makers, and invest in the Android ecosystem for users and developers. We’re pleased to resolve our case with the states and move forward on a settlement that includes:

    • Growing our commitment to app store choice: We have always allowed alternative app stores to be preloaded onto Android devices and for users to download alternative app stores directly. In fact, most Android devices ship with two or more app stores preloaded. The settlement with the attorneys general makes clear that OEMs can continue to provide users with options out of the box to use Play or another app store. We recently implemented features in Android 14 that will make third-party app stores work even better for users and let third-party app stores update apps more easily.
    • Streamlining sideloading while prioritizing security: Unlike on iOS, Android users have the option to sideload apps, meaning they can download directly from a developer’s website without going through an app store like Google Play. While we maintain it is critical to our safety efforts to inform users that sideloading on mobile could come with unique risks, as part of our settlement we will be further simplifying the sideloading process and updating the language that informs users about these potential risks of downloading apps directly from the web for the first time.
    • Expanding user choice billing to more people: App and game developers will be able to implement an alternative billing option alongside Google Play’s billing system for their U.S. users who can then choose which option to use when making in-app purchases. We have been piloting user choice billing in the U.S. for over a year and will now expand this option further.
    • Expanding open communication on pricing: We have always given developers more ways to interact with their customers than iOS and other operating systems. For example, Google Play allows developers to communicate freely with their customers outside the app about subscription offers or lower-cost options available on a rival app store or the developer’s website. This openness has spurred competition and benefited consumers and developers. As part of user choice billing, which we’re expanding with today’s settlement announcement, developers are also able to show different pricing options within the app when a user makes a digital purchase.
    • Contributing to a settlement fund: Google will pay $630 million into a settlement fund to be distributed for the benefit of consumers according to a Court-approved plan and $70 million into a fund that will be used by the states.

Android and Google Play provide choices and opportunities for innovation that other platforms we compete against simply don’t – from allowing for multiple app stores and avenues of app distribution to piloting new ways for users to pay for in-app purchases. We’re pleased to reach an agreement that builds on that foundation and we look forward to making these improvements that will help evolve Android and Google Play for the benefit of millions of developers and billions of people around the world. These proposed changes will go into effect after the Court formally approves the settlement.

We’re continuing to work towards making AI useful for everyone, including by collaborating with others— and approaching it in a bold and responsible way.

A great example of this is Lengua Española e Inteligencia Artificial — Spanish Language and Artificial Intelligence (LEIA), a project the Real Academia Española (RAE) set up four years ago to improve the use of the Spanish language in technological environments. The Academia invited tech companies to join, committing to improving the use of the Spanish language in technological environments, helping the 590 million Spanish speakers worldwide and increasing the presence of the Spanish language.

Today, we’re announcing two major advances we’ve made as part of this project: First off, we’ve incorporated the lexical repertoire of the RAE’s Dictionary of the Spanish Language into Gboard, the keyboard app from Google. Second, we’ve integrated the Spanish Language Dictionary of the Royal Academy into Search.

    Improved Spanish in Gboard

Thanks to the integration of the RAE lexicon as a source for Gboard’s AI language models, we’ve seen key improvements in Gboard, such as faster autocorrections, in words such as García, Rodríguez, Coruña, Nicaragua or Jaén, and those with an accent — like música, río, frío o vehículo. It has also allowed for better word recommendations, smoother changes between English and Spanish when typing, and reduced biases.

Moreover, hundreds of thousands of new words („ibuprofeno“, „criptomonedas“, „SMS“, „tempura“) have been integrated into the Gboard dictionary for Android.

For years, we’ve been working across the mobile industry, including carriers and smartphone manufacturers around the world, to evolve and adopt RCS, the modern texting standard.

By replacing the outdated SMS and MMS protocols, users benefit from a more modern and secure messaging experience with typing indicators, read receipts, threaded replies, high-quality media sharing, improved group chats, better privacy like end-to-end encryption and more with RCS. RCS is a much better messaging protocol, and we know that people love using it.

Today marks a new milestone that we are incredibly proud of: There are now more than one billion monthly active users with RCS enabled in Google Messages. We are grateful to our partners and our users that have advocated for RCS over the years — it’s been a lot of work to get here, and we want to thank you. Beyond Google Messages, there are other messaging clients that use RCS and we are pleased that Apple also took their first step two weeks ago in announcing that they’re embracing RCS.

Earlier this year, I took on a new role leading Google Play. One of the best parts of this job is that I get to see all the different ways Play impacts people around the world — whether it’s users discovering new trending apps, or developers building the game they’ve been dreaming of for years.

To support this entire community, we’ve made lots of improvements to the Play Store this year. For example, we made it even easier to discover all that Play has to offer, including for different device types like wearables, foldables and tablets. We also introduced new ways to redeem Play Points, along with new features and titles on Google Play Games on PC.

And because Play is only successful when our developers are, we continued to make updates to help them grow their businesses. That included launching tools to help them make their apps more discoverable, generate revenue and protect users’ privacy. It’s been amazing to see developers showcase their creativity and build great content people love on Play.

Today, we’re celebrating their success with Google Play’s Best of 2023 Awards, a roundup of the best apps, games and books on Play. To reflect this year’s trends, we introduced new award categories that recognize helpful apps using the latest technology (such as “Best with AI” and “Best Game for Good”), and experiences that work well across a wide range of devices (such as “Best Multi-device App and Game” and “Best for Google Play Games on PC”).

Read on for the full list of award winners in the U.S. To find out the winners in other countries, visit the Best of 2023 page on the Play Store. Congratulations to everyone!

We look forward to seeing what 2024 brings and continuing to help people discover new (and maybe their next favorite) apps, games and books — wherever they are, on whatever device.

As more people use their devices for mobile banking and money management, fraudsters and criminals are increasingly using malicious apps to steal money or account information.

Scammers often send phishing messages trying to get you to download a fraudulent app that’s designed to get your financial credentials, either through surveillance or by acting like a legitimate app. These phishing messages may appear to come from a well-known company, like a bank or a delivery service, and require urgent action to resolve an issue quickly. These types of scams affect people all over the world and have grown rapidly in recent years across all mobile operating systems.

    Android’s built-in security protections

Android has always offered the ability to download apps from many different sources. And we’ve built in multiple layers of protections and warnings to help you stay safe and make informed choices when downloading apps outside of established app stores.

To celebrate International Fraud Awareness Week, here’s a look at our multi-layered app safety defenses and a reminder of how to use them in your daily life to stay protected.

    • Phone by Google: Phone helps protect against voice phishing and scams with built-in caller ID, spam protection and Call Screen. We will block dangerous calls or warn you about suspicious callers, who may be trying to trick you into downloading an app or sharing sensitive information. If you see a warning, think twice before answering. With Call Screen on Pixel phones, Google Assistant can even answer unknown numbers and find out who’s calling and why – so you can decide whether to pick up.
    • Messages by Google and Gmail: We use AI to spot suspicious messages by assessing the reputation of the sender, looking for known patterns and dangerous links. We will automatically block messages or flag them clearly with a warning. If you see a flagged message, proceed with caution especially before clicking on links and attachments.
    • Google Safe Browsing: Safe Browsing provides more protection in cases where a link may have looked legitimate. We’ll warn you if it looks like the site is dangerous and is attempting to phish your credentials. Use the warning to click on the “Go back to safety” option to avoid a bad site.

Google Play has millions of the latest apps, games, and books for people around the world. To serve everyone who uses Google Play, we need to make sure we build our platform to be as accessible as possible — especially for the more than 1.3 billion people who live with some form of disability. This means building with and for people from that community.

Since this month is National Disability Employment Awareness Month, we wanted to highlight accessibility features and apps on Google Play and some of the Googlers who build them.

Accessibility tags that help you find helpful apps

Accessibility tags on the Play Store make it easier to discover accessible apps and games with tags that include information like screen reader-friendly, hearing assistance, learning disability and more. These tags help make it easy for those with diverse needs to easily find apps that are useful tools for a specific need (like a transcription app built for people who are Deaf or hard of hearing) and any app that is accessible (like a game that is screen-reader friendly).

Karo Caran, an accessibility program manager for Google Play, helped launch this feature. As someone who has low vision, she hopes that the work she did with her team to launch this feature will help others more easily find accessible apps and games on Google Play like the one she uses every day. For example, they might find new apps like Aira Explorer, an app that connects someone who is blind or has low vision with a professionally-trained visual interpreter for on-demand assistance.

New features designed to make Google Play Books work with accessibility tools

Automagic is a page-turn feature improvement in Google Play Books that helps people using a Braille display that’s paired with Talkback on Android to navigate books, making the experience better for everyone.

Previously, the basic navigation on Google Play Books supported using Braille input keys or dots to navigate through items on a page — like paragraphs, words or characters. However, moving from one page to another required switching from the Braille display to the touch screen, making the reading experience slower. Ankita Saxena, Software Engineer for Play Accessibility, noticed this issue when testing out Google Play Books and worked to find a solution. After prototyping multiple solutions, Automagic was launched, allowing users to navigate the entire book reading experience using a Braille display with Talkback.

A design process that makes new products work better for everyone

Reading Practice, a new feature in Google Play Books, helps beginner readers improve vocabulary and pronunciation skills, was designed and built with accessibility in mind, thanks to Googlers like Kevin Howald. Kevin, a software engineer for the Play Books Android App and a person with a disability, worked with the team building Reading Practice to incorporate a product design that worked for people with a range of abilities — this included design considerations for visual, auditory, and cognitive accessibility needs. As part of his role, Kevin works to identify accessibility barriers, review code and mentor engineers to ensure accessibility is an integral part of the design process for Google Play features.
