    4. Enjoy YouTube and YouTube Music with the Tab S9 series

The new Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 series offers more room to watch your favorite YouTube videos and navigate your music library on YouTube Music. With its Dynamic AMOLED 2X display, the screen comes to life in vivid color and detail.

YouTube and YouTube Music are just a few of the more than 50 Google apps that have been optimized for Android tablets including the Galaxy Tab S9 series.

YouTube has updated layouts to fit perfectly within the unique dimensions of a tablet. And with the large screen of the Tab S9 Ultra, full screen mode hits even harder when you want to see more of the action.

With YouTube Music, you can listen to music, read lyrics, and see related content side-by-side with player controls for a more immersive experience. A two-column layout also enhances how you interact with your playlists, so you can scan and reorder songs while having access to playlist controls.

Thirty-three years ago, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law, ensuring that individuals with disabilities have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else. Among the people who worked tirelessly on this act, Judy Heumann, who passed away earlier this year, served as a shining champion for disabled people and a deeply loved member of the disability community.

Today, the musical tribute “Lift Me Up” honors Judy’s life and legacy. The tribute is created by artist and advocate Lachi, co-songwriters James Ian, Gaelynn Lea and April Rose, and the global network of Recording Artists and Music Professionals with Disabilities (RAMPD). Tony-winner Ali Stroker starts the video with an Audio Description for blind and low vision audiences. The captions and audio descriptions are sponsored by Google.

As a director of developer relations for Android, my team helps pave the way for developers to build high-quality apps across all our devices. As screens have grown larger, we started by asking ourselves, “what are the most helpful ways an app can optimize for bigger screens?”

With foldable smartphones like the now-available Pixel Fold and tablets like the Pixel Tablet, apps can behave in entirely new ways that take advantage of this unique hardware. Three design principles help apps make the most of the extra screen space on large screen Android devices:

    1. Two-pane layouts display content across two columns, showing you more content across the unfolded, larger screen, and allowing you to do more without extra taps or losing context
    2. App continuity on foldable phones ensures apps easily transition from folded to unfolded orientations
    3. Responsive layouts resize content and controls as the screen size changes, such as when you use two apps in split-screen mode

Last month at I/O 2023, Android announced that more than 50 Google apps and many of your other favorite apps have been optimized for large screens. Today, we’re highlighting five apps that you can try out which employ these important design principles for foldable devices: SideChef, LINE, Deezer, Google Weather and Google Keep.

Smartwatches are a great way to stay connected, healthy and productive, but they can also be a great way to express your personal style. With an unrivaled selection of customization features and unique ways to interact with apps, Wear OS empowers you to create a smartwatch experience that is truly one-of-a-kind.

Here are some of the ways you can personalize your watch:

    1. Make it yours with a unique watch face.

One of the easiest ways to personalize your Wear OS smartwatch is to change the watch face. Choosing a face that reflects your personal style and mood can give your watch a completely new look. Beyond the variety of watch faces that come with your watch, you can also download new ones from Google Play, where there are thousands more. From seasonal collections to the Watch Faces of the Week, there’s a treasure trove of options to make your smartwatch stand out from the crowd. Many watch faces also come with built-in color customization options so you can create a harmonious blend that complements your personal style and mood.

For an even greater variety, you can turn to watch face platforms like Facer. Whether you’re a fan of classic watch styles, futuristic sci-fi themes or your favorite movie franchise, Facer has a watch face to match your interests. This platform opens up a world of possibilities and regularly publishes more designs, like their new animated 3D collection, which is exclusively available on Wear OS watches.

And with the recently launched Watch Face Format, built in partnership with Samsung, developers and designers can easily create high-quality, no-code watch faces. Be on the lookout for even more beautiful watch face options coming from the creative community with the next generation of Wear OS watches.

Currently, Find My Device helps you locate misplaced devices that have location capabilities and are connected to the internet — but we know that keeping track of every device in your life is getting more complicated. We’ve heard from you that being able to locate devices that are offline or that don’t have location capabilities would make keeping track of your devices more seamless. That’s why later this summer, we’re launching a refreshed Find My Device experience that makes it easier than ever to locate your devices and belongings quickly and securely by ringing compatible devices or viewing their location on a map in the app – even when they’re offline. The new Find My Device network will harness over a billion Android devices across the world to help you locate your missing belongings like headphones, tracker tags, or even your phone via Bluetooth proximity.

Attach Bluetooth trackers from Tile, Chipolo, and Pebblebee to your everyday objects — like your keys, wallets, or luggage to make them findable via the Find My Device network. And keep your ears open for updates to your existing Pixel Buds, as well as headphones from Sony and JBL, that will join the Find My Device ecosystem soon.

Most importantly, the Find My Device network was built with user privacy as a key priority. Location data crowdsourced from the network is end-to-end encrypted, which ensures Google can’t see or use it for any other purposes. We will be sharing more about all the privacy safeguards we’ve built into the Find My Device network to prioritize user safety ahead of our feature launch.

Experience the best of Android on your TV and in your car

In the living room, Android TV OS is now the #1 streaming platform worldwide by shipments, and recently brought Google TV users more than 800 free TV channels in one place – more than any other streaming platform.

On the road, Android continues to bring new in-car experiences, whether it’s Android Auto or cars with Google built-in. Supported by nearly every major manufacturer, Android Auto will be available in 200 million cars this year. And the number of car models with Google built-in will more than double by the end of the year.

And we’re continuing to bring Android to new screens. Together with Samsung, we’re building a new immersive XR platform powered by Android. We’ll share more later this year.

Enjoy all your devices working better together

But Android is about more than just different types of devices — it’s also about connecting them. And we’ve been building features to help your devices to work better together:

    • Fast Pair speeds up the setup process for pairing your favorite devices, including over 300 headphones.
    • Casting makes streaming video and audio to your devices simple, with support for over 3,000 apps.
    • Nearby Share is enabled on 3 billion devices, letting you easily share content with people and between your phone, tablet and Chromebook. It even works with Windows PCs, now available in Beta globally.

Keep track of all your devices with the new Find My Device

To help you keep track of all your devices, we’re updating Find My Device later this summer to support a wider range of devices from different brands — from headphones to tablets and more. And to protect your privacy and safety, unknown tracker alerts will tell you if an unrecognized tracking tag is moving with you, and help you locate it. Check out this blog post to learn more about these new experiences.

Regular platform updates keep Wear OS watches like the Google Pixel Watch and Samsung Galaxy Watches running faster, safer and longer with stronger battery life. Wear OS 4 will bring even more updates later this year, with new and improved accessibility capabilities like a faster and more reliable text-to-speech experience. It will also provide backup and restore support, helping you securely transfer data and settings between watches. And if you’re setting up a watch from your phone, any permissions you’ve granted on your phone will automatically carry over.

We also just launched the Watch Face Format, built in partnership with Samsung, so developers and designers can easily create high-quality and power-efficient watch faces for Wear OS 4. We look forward to seeing what the Wear OS community will add to the already wide selection of watch faces available today on Google Play.

Look out for these new features, plus much more coming, to help you stay connected and productive, and customize your smartwatch to be uniquely yours.

Instead of spending time and effort yourself doing chores around the house, imagine you had a team of little helpers to do them while you were asleep. Wouldn’t that be nice? It might sound far-fetched for your house, but it’s possible for your smartphone. An open-source technology called CHRE (Context Hub Runtime Environment) can offer similar benefits for Android phones by offloading tasks.

Today, OnePlus announced new Android devices, including the OnePlus 11 smartphone with CHRE technology built into Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processors. We’re here to explain what CHRE technology actually is, the performance benefits it can offer and its future potential for boosting the connection between all your devices.

    How CHRE technology works

Modern smartphones contain multiple processors, which function similarly to the human brain to help manage tasks. While one central unit called the Applications Processor manages all applications on the phone, its size means it takes considerable battery power to run. Smaller processors can handle simple tasks much more efficiently, which is exactly where CHRE comes in.

CHRE, or Context Hub Runtime Environment, is an open-source technology that enables Android phones to efficiently use their smaller processors, so they can run simple tasks without noticeable impact to your battery life.

    Android’s Fast Pair and CHRE

With Fast Pair, your Android phone discovers supported Bluetooth accessories that are nearby and lets you pair them in a single tap. Now, by making use of CHRE, new OnePlus 11 users will notice increased responsiveness with Fast Pair when they pair the phone with new devices like earbuds. This is thanks to CHRE’s power efficiency which helps prepare information for the Application Processor while it’s asleep—so it’s ready near-instantly when you need it.

The benefits of picking up a new Android device don’t stop after your purchase, either. Over the last few years, we’ve been investing in frequent software updates and feature drops which help keep your devices fresh—even outside of yearly OS upgrades.

In 2022, over half of the features launched through our quarterly updates support OS versions as far back as Android 6. That means the billions of active Android devices are regularly receiving new features that make them more helpful. And today, we’re announcing a new batch of features such as Fast Pair coming to Chromebook, alongside other fun and fresh updates for Android phones, tablets and Wear OS smartwatches.

Our routine updates also help bring critical security and privacy improvements, ensuring you can be in greater control of your data and with added protection through Android’s built-in security features. Across our partners, brands like Samsung, Xiaomi, OnePlus and OPPO are committing to longer support of OS and security updates to extend the lifetime of your device.

We are also continuing our collaborations with industry organizations like GSMA and CSA to form security standards and labeling practices for connected devices, helping bring more protection and transparency for consumers. And later this year, building on GSMA’s global standard, we’re bringing a new eSIM transfer capability to Android that allows users to quickly and securely transfer their mobile plan to a new device, without having to swap a physical SIM card. Deutsche Telekom is taking the first step in using this industry standard to enable a simple and secure transfer with eSIM for the Android ecosystem.

  • New tools to help developers build better health appsNew tools to help developers build better health appsSenior Product Manager

New tools to help developers build better health appsNew tools to help developers build better health appsSenior Product Manager

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Digital mobile health apps are capable of lowering the barrier to equitable healthcare. They are quickly becoming essential tools to help healthcare workers deliver better care to patients — especially in under-resourced communities. However, it’s been costly and difficult for developers to build tools that share health information across systems and work well in areas that often lack internet connectivity.

Today, at our annual Google Health event The Check Up, we introduced Open Health Stack, a suite of open-source building blocks built on an interoperable data standard. This suite of components makes it easier for developers to quickly build apps allowing healthcare workers to access the information and insights they need to make informed decisions. For example, healthcare workers in rural areas may be able to quickly access the information they need to care for a patient diagnosed with tuberculosis by using these apps, or they can access population health data to better monitor community health.

The building blocks to effective digital health solutions

Digital health solutions built to date have focused on solving for single, disease-focused conditions, leading to data silos and making it difficult for healthcare workers to access the patient information they need. However, over the past few years, Fast Healthcare Interoperability Standards (HL7 FHIR ©) has created an open standard to address these problems and the global digital health community has championed the adoption of it.

With Open Health Stack, developers can more easily build FHIR-based apps, enhance patient privacy and analyze data. One component of Open Health Stack is the Android FHIR SDK which makes data stored on the app secure and accessible offline — so that it’s safe and usable even in places without cell coverage or internet access. Open Health Stack also comes with design guidelines, so developers can quickly adopt best practices to improve the community health worker experience. And we are sharing stories from our partners to showcase how Open Health Stack is being used for different use cases.

How our partners are supporting community health workers

Developers around the world — like Ona, IPRD Solutions, Argusoft, Intellisoft and more — are already using Open Health Stack to build platforms and solutions that are being deployed across Sub-Saharan Africa, India and Southeast Asia. For instance, Intellisoft Consulting, a health IT developer based in Kenya, is building a maternal health app called “Mama’s Hub” to support community health volunteers and pregnant women in rural communities.

Earlier this year, Open Health Stack was certified as a Digital Public Good by the Digital Public Goods Alliance, recognizing that it adheres to data privacy best practices, isn’t harmful by design, and is in service of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. We also worked with the World Health Organization to develop Open Health Stack and make it easier for developers to build tools in line with WHO’s recommendations. We hope this suite of components will power the development of solutions that support healthcare workers to deliver data-driven, patient-centered care everywhere.
