Free Play Days: The Elder Scrolls Online and Rainbow Six Siege

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

This week, we have some exciting games to announce for the Free Play Days event! To make it even better, both games will be available for Xbox Live Gold and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members to play for a whole week.

Starting today, The Elder Scrolls Online is available from Tuesday, August 27 at 7:00 a.m. PDT through to Tuesday, September 3 at 7:00 a.m. PDT.

Tomorrow, Rainbow Six Siege becomes available from Wednesday, August 28 at 12:01 a.m. PDT through to Tuesday, September 3 at 11:59 p.m. PDT.

You can find and install the games here. To download on console, click on the Gold member area on the home dashboard on your Xbox One.

If you like what you’ve played and want to keep the fun going, the games are also currently available for purchase at a discount so you can continue playing while keeping your Gamerscore and achievements earned in-game during the event.

    The Elder Scrolls Online

Explore a world without limits during The Elder Scrolls Online Free Play Days Event. The base game includes access to four powerful Classes, 23 unique zones filled with adventures, the game’s epic main story questline, and much more. That’s tons of adventure in the ever-growing world of Tamriel!

In addition to the base game access, you can visit Morrowind, the island home of the Dark Elves. There, explore ESO’s first Chapter and help the Tribunal member Vivec restore his lost power.

But that’s not all! Begin your own Season of the Dragon adventure by checking out the Elsweyr Prologue quest and release Dragons into the realm of the Khajiit. The Season of the Dragon began earlier this year with the Wrathstone DLC game pack, but you can experience this important part of the year-long story for yourself during the Free Play Days event!

If you’ve played in a Free Play Days event previously, you’ll be able to continue your adventure as if you never left, and all new ESO accounts made will also receive 500 crowns for the in-game Crown Store.

    Rainbow Six Siege

The tense, tactical firefights of Rainbow Six Siege will be free for a week to all Xbox Live Gold and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members, throwing open the doors for anyone who wants to breach through walls, smash through floors, and outwit enemy teams using an ever-growing roster of gadget-equipped Operators. During the Free Play Days event, all maps and modes will be available for free to players, along with 20 of the game’s Operators.

The Free Play Days event is an ideal opportunity for new players to ease into the game ahead of the upcoming Operation Ember Rise, which will rework the Kanal map and introduce two new Latin American Operators: Goyo, a Defender from Mexico whose deployable shields hide an explosive, fiery surprise; and Amaru, an Attacker from Peru whose grappling hook lets her zip to ledges and crash through windows. To learn more, get an in-depth view here.

Quick thinking, creative strategies, and an Xbox Live Gold membership are all you’ll need to hold your own in Rainbow Six Siege, so get ready to breach and clear.

Keynote speeches from Scratch Conference Europe 2019

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

This weekend, the Raspberry Pi Foundation hosted Scratch Conference Europe 2019 at Churchill College in Cambridge, UK.

Framing the busy weekend’s schedule were presentations from:

    • Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Media Lab’s Mitchel Resnick, co-inventor of Scratch himself
    • Science presenter Neil Monterio
    • Raspberry Pi favourite, the fire-loving Fran Scott

Since not everyone was able to travel to Cambridge to attend the conference, we wanted to make sure you’re not missing out, so we filmed their presentations, for you to watch at your leisure.

For the full Scratch Conference experience, we suggest gathering together a group of like-minded people to watch the videos and discuss your thoughts. Alternatively, use #ScratchEurope on Twitter to join in the conversation with the conference attendees online.

  • Celebrate One Year of Firewall Zero Hour on PS VR with Free Trial

Celebrate One Year of Firewall Zero Hour on PS VR with Free Trial

    Reading Time: 6 minutes

    Hey guys,

Shabs here, Game Director on Firewall Zero Hour*, the 4v4 tactical multiplayer shooter, exclusive to PS VR.

We’re absolutely pumped to be celebrating the one year anniversary of Firewall Zero Hour’s launch. And what a year it’s been!

Over the course of a year, we’ve released a number of updates to the game — at times directly influenced by the awesome feedback we’ve received from our players! Our amazing community continues to grow stronger than ever, and we’re grateful for the recognition Firewall Zero Hour receives — such as being named the VR Game of the Year (2018) by UploadVR, and named a finalist for the VR Game of the Year Award (2019) by AIXR’s VR Awards.

Coming up on a year of playing Firewall Zero Hour, we also have some fun data stats from the community to share with you. As of 8/13/19:

    • You’ve played over 4,028,896 total hours!
    • You’ve eliminated over 26,833,576 enemies!
    • Your top three chosen Contractors are Texas, Red, and Skip!
    • Your top three chosen maps are Compound, District, and Hotel!
    • Your top three chosen weapons are Taylor X-75, Spitfire, and Taylor X-75 CQB!

In honor of all of these milestones, we’re excited to be putting together an Extended Free Trial for active PS Plus members, August 28th – September 2nd!

During this 6-day Free Trial, players can squad up and dive straight into battle—testing out the latest maps, weapons, and equipment. Since launching one year ago, we’ve added 4 more maps to the game (Containment, Hangar, F.O.B., Newsroom), plus new Contractors, weapons, and tons of customizations like camo skins, face paints, and trinkets. Players will get to try out the new free missions from our latest season which launched August 13th, Operation: Dark Web, and earn free cosmetic rewards. There will also be a Double XP event happening concurrently during the 6 days–so players can level up even faster in-game.

It’s truly the perfect time for new players to hop in and try out Firewall Zero Hour! To get you in gear for the Extended Free Trial, we’re also bringing you a list of ten favorite tactics used by the Firewall Zero Hour community. Study up before you squad up!

    1. First time stepping into the game? Try out the Tutorial, then try out Solo Training for a few different maps. In Solo Training you’ll go up against AI, and get a feel for what it’s like to be an Attacker or Defender. You can also experiment with different loadouts and their weaponry (Assault, CQB, Support). Once you get the hang of different game mechanics, you’re ready to try out Public Training, where you and your teammates will play co-op against AI and learn the value of teamwork by communication. Try out different Contractors in this mode and see how their Primary skills play out.
    2. Now you’re ready for the heart of the gameplay — Public Contracts! In this mode, teams of 4v4 go head-to-head, and the stage is set for unpredictable outcomes. You’ll experience what it’s like to play as both an Attacker and a Defender, as your role switches after every round. Strategize together in the lobby and throughout the match. Who’s staying together? Who’s going to flank? Vocal communication with your teammates is crucial to your success.
    3. Experiment with different loadouts, depending on whether you’re on the Attacking team or the Defending team. The Support loadout is a great choice for new players, as you get access to the Revive Pistol right away. The Support loadout also comes with a Signal Modifier, which is a great tool if you’re a Defender. When you place a Signal Modifier near the laptop, Attackers must find and destroy that Signal Modifier before they can hack the laptop.
    4. There’s a new loadout this season called the Operation loadout. It’s an awesome option for those wanting to try out some of the latest gear in Firewall Zero Hour. The Operation loadout comes with the Raptor as primary weapon, the Sarge as secondary weapon, the C4 as lethal equipment, and the Motion Sensor as tactical equipment.
    5. The Motion Sensor is Firewall Zero Hour’s latest piece of equipment, as of Operation: Dark Web’s launch. You’ll be sure to encounter players using it, and you can test it out yourself with the Operation loadout. When a Motion Sensor is placed, a radius is engaged that can detect enemies. If an enemy enters this radius, their enemy outline will turn red and can be seen by the player who placed the Motion Sensor. Teammates of this player will receive a red-dot marker on their wrist tablets, but proper communication is still very important between the player who places a Motion Sensor and his/her teammates!
    6. Speaking of Motion Sensors — you might be wondering what’s a good counter to an enemy who places a Motion Sensor. Check out the Ninja Skill, Contractor Meiko’s Primary Skill. This Skill gives you reduced movement noise, as well as renders you undetectable to a Motion Sensor.
    7. The Operation: Dark Web season kicked off with a new Contractor, Kane**, whom you might see in a lot of your matches. It’s good to be aware of Kane’s Primary Skill of Blade, which allows up to 3 knives to be thrown using the melee button. How can you, as a player, counter against this type of attack? Equip your Contractor with the Secondary Skill of Rhino Skin, which lets you take less damage from knife attacks.
    8. All about the maps! Firewall Zero Hour now has thirteen different maps, set in diverse locations throughout the world. Take note of certain areas in maps that can really work to your advantage, or detriment. With great risk, comes great reward…but also…risk! The catwalk in Shoothouse, the ditch in District, and the skybridge in Hangar are all notable spots where both unique attacks and dangerous chokepoints can happen.
    9. Some maps are on the larger side (Docks, Warehouse, District, Hangar, F.O.B., Newsroom) so be sure to keep that in mind when strategizing what might work best for them — such as equipping Skills like Double Time (Diaz’s Primary Skill–faster movement speed) and equipping long-range weapons, like the Kruger.
    10. During the Extended Free Trial, you’ll be able to complete a variety of Operation: Dark Web missions and earn free rewards–and you’ll keep all your progress if you decide to get the game. Some of the free rewards during the Operation: Dark Web season include weapons, camo, trinkets, and face paints. Many missions will require you to complete a task (or several) in a particular map, or by using a particular Skill or weapon–giving you an array of interesting missions to complete. As a quick reminder: Firewall Zero Hour will soon welcome another free new map, Cargo, at the mid-season update September 17th!

Well there you have it, Contractors.

We’re excited to be welcoming even more of you into the fray!

And we’re over-the-moon to be celebrating one year of fun with you in wildly unpredictable multiplayer matches, across realistic maps, and with a player base that now spans over 150 different countries…all on PS VR!

For those of you who have been with us since day one — we thank you again for staying on this wild ride with us, one year on.

Let’s squad up, and I’ll see you online, Contractor!

    – Shabs

    Reading Time: 5 minutes

Damoun Shabestari, Game Director, First Contact Entertainment

    Hallo Leute,

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B0lbnBk9y_k?rel=0]

Menschen, Autos, Grundrauschen in den Straßen…hier bekommen eure Ohren so richtig was ab.

    So viele Optionen

    • BLE peripherals (e.g. TI SensorTag) – NEW!
    • Another Arduino board – NEW!

The ArduinoBLE library and new BLE central feature are supported on the following Arduino boards:

Prior to this release, Arduino only officially supported BLE peripheral functionality on these boards. A BLE peripheral is typically used to expose some sensor data or actuators to another device BLE central capable device such as a smartphone or PC. With the new BLE central functionality, you’ll be able to wirelessly connect two boards together for communication or connect to a third party BLE peripheral, such as a TI SensorTag.

We think that the ArduinoBLE library is much easier to use than anything else out there and are excited to see what you build with this new capability!

    The development journey

Back in 2015, the Arduino 101 was released, based on the Curie module developed by Intel. It was the first official Arduino board with on-board BLE support. The CurieBLE library initially only supported BLE peripheral mode.

After launch, the Arduino and Intel teams worked together to design an Arduino friendly BLE API that supported both BLE Peripheral and Central functionality. This was released later in 2016 in the v2.0 of the Arduino core for Arduino 101.

The BLE features of the 101 were also incorporated into the CTC 101 kit in many classrooms around the world. Students used smartphones or tablets for exercises in the kit to interact with project based lessons running on the board. Unfortunately, Intel decided to stop producing the Curie module in 2017, bringing the Arduino 101 board to end of life.

Last year, at Maker Faire Bay Area 2018, Arduino launched two new boards: the MKR WiFi 1010 and Uno WiFi Rev.2. Both boards use the u-blox NINA-W102 as a 2.4 GHz wireless module. Initially both boards only supported WiFi using the WiFiNINA library. However, the ESP32 chip inside the u-blox NINA-W102 supports Bluetooth classic and BLE as well.

Later in 2018, the Arduino core team was tasked with adding BLE support to the MKR WiFi 1010 board so that it could be used with the upcoming Arduino Science Kit Physics Lab product. The Science Kit Physics Lab product is another educational kit, targeted for students in the classroom. We had several choices to move forward, including:

    • Bridging the ESP-IDF’s BLE API’s via RPC to the main MCU that sketches run on
    • Basing things on the industry standard Bluetooth HCI protocol and investing in a Bluetooth HCI host stack as an Arduino library

The first option above was expected to take an equal amount of time to the second, but also would make the BLE library exposed to users highly dependent on the underlying firmware running on the ESP32. It was also not as portable to other chip sets in the future. Thus, ArduinoBLE was created. The NINA firmware only needed small change to bridge its virtual Bluetooth HCI controller to the UART pins of the module.

Earlier this year, we released the Arduino Nano 33 IoT and Arduino Nano 33 BLE boards. Since the Arduino Nano 33 IoT uses the same chipset as the MKR WiFi 1010, things worked out of the box. For the Nano 33 BLE, which is based on the Nordic nRF52840 chip, a new Arduino core was developed for this board based on mbed OS (see this blog post for more info). mbed OS includes a radio stack called Cordio, which provides both a Bluetooth HCI link controller and HCI host. Creating a single C++ class that interfaced with Cordio’s Bluetooth HCI link layer allowed us to re-use 95%+ of ArduinoBLE on this board. 🙂

After the Nano 33 BLE started shipping, there was even more demand for BLE central support. So, development for feature was scheduled and is now available. It combines the API designed for the Arduino 101 in CurieBLE ported on top of ArduinoBLE’s Bluetooth HCI host stack.

Many thanks to Tom Igoe, one of the co-founders of Arduino, for providing feedback on the official Arduino BLE libraries throughout the years.

Here’s a low-cost air hockey table you can make yourself

    Arduino TeamAugust 26th, 2019

If you’d like to bring the air hockey arcade experience home with you, then look no further than this project by Kousheek Chakraborty and Satya Schiavina, or ‘Technovation.’

Cleverly, the scaled-down game table uses a household vacuum cleaner blower attachment to provide air pressure, sending little jets of air through a grid of laser-cut holes on the acrylic playing surface.

LED lights embedded in the sides add a bit more excitement to the build, and points are tallied with an Arduino Uno-based LCD score display. A pair of buttons are used to register a points for either player, hopefully eliminating arguments over who is ahead as the game progresses!

  • Crystar: Pre-Launch Interview with Producer/Director Fuyuki Hayashi

Crystar: Pre-Launch Interview with Producer/Director Fuyuki Hayashi

    Reading Time: 5 minutes

At GDC 2019, the action RPG Crystar was announced with the catchphrase, “For When I Weep, Then I Am Strong.” But how can weeping make you stronger? Crystar’s Producer/Director Fuyuki Hayashi explains how that’s possible in this game. Crystar will be released on August 27, 2019 for North America and August 30, 2019 for Europe.

Mimi Saito: Crystar starts off with the protagonist Rei killing her little sister Mirai. Can you tell us a little bit about the plot and who helps Rei in her journey to save her sister?

Fuyuki Hayashi: This title takes place in the afterworld known as Purgatory. Rei, who has killed her sister, sets out to revive her by signing a contract with the Demon Twins known as Mephis and Pheles and becoming an Executor. As an Executor, Rei must travel through Purgatory and fight the Souls of the dead, called Revenants, and find her sister’s Soul.

During her journey, Rei is joined by other characters with their own goals and motives: Kokoro, her senior Executor who vowed to take revenge on a certain Revenant; Sen, a girl with a strong sense of justice who lost her mother in a tragic accident; and Nanana, a mysterious Revenant who likes Rei very much.

Crystar may be a bit dark with its themes of tears and girls enduring hardships and fighting in the world of the dead, but there’s a lot of fun dialogue like Rei being teased for her peculiar potato-only diet and the girls enjoying each other’s company.

MS: Who else do you meet in Purgatory besides Rei’s companions?

FH: Revenants, which are basically evil spirits, appear as some of the main enemies in this game. One of them is Anamnesis, who’s responsible for dragging Rei and Mirai into Purgatory. She’s also the one who Kokoro seeks out for revenge. Anamnesis is dead and gathers the Souls of others in order to grant herself Revival. She crosses paths with Rei and fights her several times throughout the story.

There’s also Mephis and Pheles, the Demon Twins who act as guides for Rei and the other Executors. They’re the managers of Purgatory and form contracts with Executors to have them get rid of irregular Souls.

You can also visit Rei’s room in the realm of the living and see her samoyed, Thelema. I recommend everyone pet her for some emotional comfort.

MS: Everyone at the Spike Chunsoft, Inc. is a big fan of Thelema! Interacting with her is such a comforting moment in the game. Can you talk about Crystar’s theme and how that ties into the gameplay mechanics? How does crying actually help Rei in the game?

FH: There are two ways in which characters shed tears in order to grow stronger in Crystar.

First, the girls can cry in Purgatory and summon a supernatural companion known as a Guardian. There’s a Tear Gauge that can be filled by fighting or holding the cry button. The Guardian is summoned when the Tear Gauge is full, granting access to combination attacks and a special finishing move.

The second way is by crying in the world of the living. The enemies known as Revenants that appear in this title were all once human. Their death cries, called Torments, appear on-screen as text when they’re defeated. Rei can purify these Torments by crying in her room, converting them into weapons and armor that can be used in the spiritual realm of Purgatory. This mechanism represents the process of achieving emotional and mental growth by overcoming grief and pain through shedding tears.

MS: How many customization options are there?

HF: There are four playable characters who you can freely switch around once they join the party. They each fulfill one of the archetypes of all-rounder, close-range type, combo type, and long-range type, so players can choose a style that fits them best.

You can also find equipment that comes with slots, which can be imbued with random benefits like resistances to status effects. Finding slotted equipment and getting certain special effects for them can be another enjoyable aspect for the loot lovers out there.

Plus, there are costumes you can unlock through DLC or simply progressing through the game, which can be used to customize each character’s appearance.

MS: What was the most difficult aspect of developing Crystar?

FH: Tears are the main motif of this game, so there are many scenes in which characters are crying. We had some difficulty during development figuring out a game system implementing tears and creating a dark setting and story that convincingly leads to the girls’ weeping.

MS: Lastly, anything we should keep an eye out for when we play?

FH: We put a lot of passion and thought into creating the story and characters, and implemented mechanisms involving tears and an action-based battle system so players can better relate and empathize with them.

It would make me very happy if players play the game without seeing any spoilers and enjoy it to the end.

Also, please don’t forget to show Thelema the samoyed lots of love!
